SIT DOWN TOGETHER

TWENTY MINUTES TO BETTER HEALTH These days, we eat more food away from home compared to generations before us, which is unfortunate because there are many benefits of family mealtime. This November (Eat Smart Month) resolve to make family meals a reality and an enjoyable time despite everyone’s busy schedules. Eating together with your family or a good set of friends (or co-workers) for about 20 minutes three to five times a week is all it takes to benefit.

So, how do you make family meals part of your weekly routine? Plan ahead and pick at least two days where everyone has time to join a family meal. Even if you have to eat dinner separately and come back to the table after a soccer practice for snack of fruit with everyone, that counts! Make the family dinner table a cell phone/TV/ computer/video-game free zone; adults too! Break the ice with a round of knock-knock jokes or ask about everyone's favorite memory from last month. This will help generate great conversation.

FAMILY MEALTIMES COULD MEAN... Fewer behavior problems in young children Stronger vocabulary and more academic successes Teens are less likely to smoke cigarettes or marijuana, or to abuse alcohol Kids are less likely to be overweight and less likely to develop disordered eating Eating healthier foods

UNLOCKING THE DOOR A day in the life of a mental health grant writer

E

very morning, I drive down a street in a not-so-nice neighborhood populated with people walking its sidewalks who aren’t popular – homeless, poor, unemployed, on drugs, some “out of their minds.” This street takes me to my office inside a four-story facility built in 1940, formerly a hospital. It’s within these claustrophobic hallways and aging walls I have to make difficult choices. Which project is more important to get money for? 

Summer camps and weekend outings for people with intellectual disabilities?

Telemedicine for adults dealing with psychosis?

Sensory room for youth exhibiting behavioral issues?

Backup generators for 24-hour crisis respite care housing?

Electronic health record for all clients?

The need is as vast as the cost: $600 to $1.5 million. And, you have to find the right matching funder – not too high, not too low – for the project. Grant writing is both rewarding and frustrating: You work hard to propose worthy projects that will make a

big difference in people’s lives, but you have no control over the outcome (i.e., if the project will get funded). My first day as a grant writer for the local mental health authority went like this: As I’m heading down the sidewalk to get my TB test read at our medical clinic, a tall, agitated woman strides toward me, dumps her plastic bag of clothes around my feet and begins to cuss me out. What did I get myself into?! I got into the mental health field, not so much by choice, but by opportunity. A fulltime grant writer position at a nonprofit is rare. Grant writing is a second career for me, after more than two decades as a writer/educator in higher education. I knew how to tell a story, but not this particular story. This story is complex and stigmatized. One in 5 (20 percent) American adults experience a mental health issue, and 1 in 10 (10 percent) young people experience a period of major depression (mentalhealth.gov 2018). Applying these statistics to our county’s 361,000 residents, this translates to 72,000 adults and 36,000 youth in Nueces County dealing with mental health issues. Sadly, a consequence of untreated mental health issues and depression is suicide. It is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States (mentalhealth.gov 2018). In Texas, the suicide rate is 11.9 per 100,000, while the suicide rate in Nueces County is higher at 12.8 per 100,000 (“Suicide in Texas,”

CURRENTLY,

20% OF AMERICAN

ADULTS EXPERIENCE A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE.

UT System Office of Health Affairs, 2015). The reality is no one wants to talk about it. My 3-second elevator speech is this: Our services are key to unlocking the door to mental health. Nueces Center for Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities (NCMHID) operates nine facilities, runs 30-plus programs and serves 11,600 residents annually in three major treatment areas: adult mental health; youth mental health; and intellectual disabilities. The people at NCMHID are working with their individual hearts to collectively help others’ minds. And it’s not because of the fantastic pay or fancy facilities. Nearly a year later, I have finally earned the trust of the young man with Down syndrome who empties my office trashcan each day at noon. He smiled at me for the first time. That felt almost as good as landing a grant.

RACHEL B. PERKES is the grant writer for NCMHID in Corpus Christi, Texas. For more information, you may contact her at rbperkes@ncmhid.org.

CHECK YOUR LEVELS Know the health risks associated with high cholesterol. By: DR. MICHAEL FUENTES

C

holesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in every cell of your body. Your body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D and substances to help you digest food. However, too much cholesterol can lead to a number of complications, including heart disease and stroke. When there is an excess of cholesterol in the body, it begins to form plaque that sticks to the artery walls. This plaque build-up can restrict blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which can cause a stroke. High cholesterol also increases your risk for heart disease due to the same plaque build-up. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 95 million adults living in the United States have high cholesterol. Since there are usually no symptoms associated with high cholesterol, it’s important to understand the risk factors associated with it, how to manage it and when you should get it checked.

 Unhealthy eating habits  Lack of exercise  Smoking  Excess alcohol consumption  Age  Weight  Heredity The desired total cholesterol level in someone’s body is below 200mg/dL. This means there are 200 milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood. If your total cholesterol level is higher than 200 mg/dL, you may be at an increased risk for stroke or heart disease. Here are some ways to reduce your total cholesterol levels:  Exercise regularly throughout the week  Develop a healthy diet full of omega 3, and limit your saturated fats

 Quit smoking  Maintain a healthy weight  Limit alcohol consumption Everyone should have their cholesterol levels checked periodically. The chances of developing high cholesterol only increase with age, so, the older you are, the more frequently you should have it checked. Gender also contributes to cholesterol levels. Be sure to ask your family doctor how often you should have your cholesterol checked so he or she can offer specific recommendations based upon your medical history and lifestyle.

WHEN THERE IS AN EXCESS OF CHOLESTEROL IN THE BODY, IT BEGINS TO FORM PLAQUE THAT STICKS TO THE ARTERY WALLS.

Texas Eye Care Network brings world-class eye care to the Coastal Bend. By: Jessica Dusek Photos by: T WINS MEDIA

The goal was to bring worldclass eye care to a community that needed it,” explains Medical Director Christopher Majka, M.D. “Nobody should have to leave the coast to get the best in care.” Majka is passionate about providing patients with affordable care that is conveniently located in Corpus Christi.

In 2011, Majka was drawn to Corpus Christi. It didn’t take long for him and his Texasborn wife to discover that wonderful people, a beautiful city, palm trees and constant breeze made Corpus Christi the perfect place to put down deep roots. 18

hortly after the birth of their first child in early in 2016, Majka established Texas Eye Care Network to provide excellent and efficient care by outstanding physicians. The service list is expansive and includes bladeless cataract removal, LASIK, PRK, eyelid surgery and comprehensive cornea, glaucoma and diabetic eye care. Unparalleled training and experience are at the core of Texas Eye Care. Majka started his medical training at age 17 and obtained his M.D. at a young age. After completing his ophthalmology residency at Kresge Eye Institute in Michigan, one of the strongest known ophthalmology programs in the country, he was selected for a cornea fellowship at Duke University Eye Center. Duke, ranked one of the top 10 eye centers in the world, provided a high-caliber platform for Majka’s fellowship. Majka is a pioneer in his field, bringing many

new technologies and techniques to South Texas in the areas of corneal transplantation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), amniotic membrane therapy, dry eye therapy and ocular surface restoration. He specializes in minimally invasive techniques to preserve and restore vision – specifically, no-stitch/no-shot cataract surgery, corneal transplants without sutures, as well as sutureless amniotic membrane grafting and in-office ocular surface restoration. In 2015, Majka built Texas Precision Surgery Center, an outpatient surgery center located on Esplanade Drive. Ambulatory surgery centers have proven to provide a safe, low-cost and patient-friendly experience compared to hospitals. “We built the surgery center first so we could maintain our high standard of excellence, care and efficiency for every aspect of eye care,” Majka noted. The new state-of-the-art clinic at 6002 S. Staples is located on the corner of Staples and Wooldridge. The clinic brings eye care to the next

level. The artistic work of Majka, Dykema Architects and Barcom Construction was completed in June 2018. Immediately, two great surgeons came to Corpus Christi to join the team: Drs. Jordan Thomson and Jorge De La Chapa. Prior to joining Texas Eye, Dr. Jordan Thomson had the honor of serving in the U.S. Army as the chief of ophthalmology and Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program in Fort Hood, Texas. Serving at one of the largest U.S. Army bases in the world, he has been awarded many honors including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Army Superior Unit Award. Thomson brings truly exceptional expertise from his experience of performing eye surgery and laser vision correction for many thousands of our nation’s heroes. “What really interested me in ophthalmology were the procedures,” Thomson explains. “I was drawn to how quickly you can make a difference. With eye surgery, it is relatively quick. Instantly you can have a drastically improved vision.” Enthusiastic about being with the practice, “This practice had everything I was looking for,” he explains. “It meshes with what my interests are as a surgeon: cataract surgery and comprehensive surgeries and laser vision correction, such as LASIK.” Thomson shares that “to have a huge impact on the quality of life is an exciting thing to be a part of. LASIK is not just cosmetic; it can be life-changing.” Thomson received exceptional training at Virginia Tech, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Harvard. Dr. Jorge De La Chapa came to Texas Eye from San Antonio with an abundance of experience. Many years and thousands of surgeries have perfected the expertise he brings to South Texas. Remarkably, as he grew up with both of his parents as practicing ophthalmologists, exceptional eye care appears to carry

through his DNA. He brings well-honed comprehensive skills and specialized training in retina care and oculoplastic. De La Chapa is a true comprehensive ophthalmologist with the training to expertly handle all areas of eye care, from eyelids and facial surgery (functional and cosmetic) to cataracts, glaucoma and retina. “Droopy eyelids and droopy eyebrows do not have to define a face,” De La Chapa says with a smile. Correcting blepharoplasty, or “droopy eyelids,” helps restore the quality of vision. It can also be cosmetically beneficial, restoring the image of youth. De La Chapa takes pride in making patients happy with their surgical outcome. Growing up in Mexico City, De La Chapa was drawn to work in the Coastal Bend. The landscape, the culture and the people made him feel right at home in Corpus Christi. Spanish being his first language, his bilingual abili-

ty makes many Spanish-speaking patrons feel right at home, too. He can get down to their concerns and vision struggles without language barriers. Dr. Dave Browning is a medical optometrist at Texas Eye Care. Formerly serving with the U.S. Navy as a department head at the Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi, Browning’s commitment to care for our military reinforces the respect and appreciation the practice shows toward veterans. He brings exceptional medical knowledge of all areas of eye care including specialty lenses that serve unique medical conditions and needs. Having served thousands of patients in the Corpus Christi area for many years, Browning has been a great addition to the team. The center’s Spanish-speaking patients also received the benefits from his bilingual communication abilities.

Dr. Arnoldo Villarreal finished his illustrious career working with Majka in order to transition his patients into good hands for years to come. Villarreal and Majka both share a commitment to philanthropic work in Corpus Christi and in other countries, both having completed multiple medical mission trips throughout the countries of the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Haiti and Mexico. Now retired, Villarreal practices regularly with Mission of Mercy, when he isn’t out fishing. Majka supports this great team with the best available technology to diagnose and treat all eye conditions. He has invested in the latest technology for early disease detection, as he feels that the key to long-term eye health is finding and treating diseases early. Recent technology advancements in the areas of glaucoma, cataract, laser vision correction (LASIK and PRK), dry eye treatment and bladeless la-

ser cataract removal allow the physicians at Texas Eye to take eye care to levels not previously available. For laser vision correction, the clinic recently purchased a topography-guided technology that records 22,000 elevation points on the cornea. This elaborate map of the eye guides the laser to a level of accuracy not otherwise possible. This is the only technology that has achieved the ultimate goal of LASIK technology: to be able to see better than you could with glasses or contacts.

“We Roll Our Pot to Your Spot!” The Original On-Site Provider of Low-Country Shrimp Boils & Bonfires in the Coastal Bend

Seeing for the first time – in a long time Majka and his team of doctors share a common deep belief that vision is precious. A 92-year-old patient that had been “blind” for over a decade came to Texas Eye to seek new treatment options. Other nationally esteemed doctors around the country had pronounced her blindness as too difficult to treat. After getting to know each other, the patient and Majka made the decision together to try an advanced ocular surface restoration procedure. As Majka operated on her, he heard the words that keep him going: “Doctor, I see you.” His patient will spend her final years seeing the people she loves and this beautiful city. This patient’s story and countless others are at the heart of the reason the Texas Eye Care medical team is focused on world-class eye care for the Coastal Bend. When Majka first arrived in Corpus Christi, many patients were traveling to Houston, San Antonio and Austin for care. Now patients are traveling to Texas Eye from all over the world. Last year alone, patients traveled from South Africa, China, Peru, Canada, The Philippines and Mexico to obtain care at Texas Eye. This is something South Texas is proud to claim as its own!

new surgical robotic procedure at CHRISTUS Spohn Health System uses the healing power of water to treat a common prostate and urologic condition affecting most men over 50 years old. The AquaBeam Robotic System from PROCEPT BioRobotics is a cutting-edge minimally invasive surgical robot, which utilizes a high-velocity waterjet to remove prostate tissue safely and effectively for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. BPH is a common prostate problem affecting about 50 percent of men between the ages of 51 and 60 and up to 90 percent of men older than 80. As many as 20 million men in the United States have lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of BPH, of which over 12 million are being actively managed for their condition. Symptoms include the frequent need to urinate, a weak stream or straining during urination. Corpus Christi urologist Dr. Jason Fisher has already begun performing the first cases for the new procedure at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline, one of only two locations currently in Texas to offer the AquaBeam. “It’s fantastic,” Fisher said. “We are able to offer state-ofthe-art technology right here in Corpus Christi. This robotic technology provides safe and effective outcomes for our patients with a new level of precision and accuracy.” Aquablation therapy combines the clarity of real-time, multi-dimensional imaging for improved decision-making and treatment planning; the accuracy of an autonomous robot, precisely executing the treatment according to the surgeon’s plan; and the power of a heat-free waterjet, eliminating the

hen Dr. Arthur E. Spohn opened the first hospital in Corpus Christi in 1905, who could have imagined his vision would grow into a health care system spanning 12 counties and touching the lives of generations of South Texans? A new book from Texas A&M University Press entitled “Dr. Arthur Spohn – Surgeon, Inventor and Texas Medical Pioneer” is the first comprehensive biography of the doctor and explores the life and legacy of a medical figure who continues to loom large in the Coastal Bend. Authors Jane Clements Monday, Frances Brannen Vick and Charles W. Monday Jr., M.D., illuminate the remarkable 19th-century story of a trailblazing physician who helped modernize the practice of medicine in Texas. “Dr. Spohn was a remarkable surgeon and spent from 1873 to 1913 serving the residents of South Texas,” author Jane Monday shared. “Little was known about him before we started our research and now, after eight years, we are pleased to have the chance to tell his story. He was so much more than a surgeon. He was a medical pioneer.” Dr. Spohn was unusually innovative for the time and exceptionally dedicated to improving medical care. Among his many surgical innovations was the development of a specialized tourniquet for “bloodless operations,” later adopted as a field instrument by militaries throughout the world. To this day, he holds the world record for the removal of the largest tumor – 328 pounds – from a patient who fully recovered. Recognizing the need for modern medical care in South Texas, Dr. Spohn, with the help of Alice King, raised funds to open the first hospital in Corpus Christi. Today, his name and institutional legacy live on in the region through the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, the largest hospital system in South Texas. “We are honored that these wonderful authors have chosen to research and shed

EAT SMART

12 smart ways to celebrate the holidays the healthy way By: ERIN WILDER

1/ Get the Eat Smart Toolkit. Take simple steps to eat healthier by celebrating Eat Smart Month in November. It’s fun and easy! We provide materials and how-to information for workplaces, schools, individuals and communities. Read more below about how to register for this toolkit. 2/ Eat clean. It can be tough to know what healthy eating really looks like when there is so much conflicting information out there. Check out our graphic to show you how to eat clean. 3/ Ask for healthier restaurant food. Americans eat and drink too many calories, sodium, sugars and saturated fats from restaurants. A single restaurant

meal can have more sodium than a person should have for the entire day. You can make a difference. Take back control of your food, and tell restaurant CEOs to prioritize healthier options. 4/ Tell your friends about processed foods. Most of the sodium we eat comes from processed, prepackaged and restaurant foods, not the saltshaker. Share the tips and facts in our graphic on processed foods to help you and your friends choose foods that work for you. 5/ Stand with the science. Science supports the link between lower sodium intake and healthier lives, even in children and teens. Show us that you stand with the science that supports sodium reduction by signing our petition today. 6/ Join the Smart Snacks Action Team. The majority of kids’ calories are consumed at school. Join the action team at http://act.voicesactioncenter. org/WXMVAGw to advocate for better school foods and teach good habits to grow up healthy. 7/ Cook a healthy meal. Enjoy a warm and spicy fall meal that will awaken your taste buds. A healthy meal this time of year can be comforting and exciting for you and your family members. 8/ Watch for sneaky sodium. There’s no question that sodium can be sneaky. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks can

add up to a whopping 4,000mg of sodium. Share our graphic that shows how you can transform your meals and snacks with little changes.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES ARE NUTRITIOUS AND CAN NATURALLY HAVE LESS SODIUM THAN MANY PROCESSED FOODS.

9/ Share the facts on fats. There is so much conflicting information on social media, on daytime TV and even in the news about what foods are considered healthy, especially when it comes to fats. Is coconut oil healthy? What about olive oil? Fish oil? Trans fat? The list goes on. Clear up confusion by checking out and sharing our infographic on fats. 10/ Cut out added sugar. Added sugars are sugars added to foods and beverages when they’re processed or prepared. Consuming too much can lead to disease – and even early death. Learn more about how to cut out added sugars today. 11/ Eat more fruits and veggies. We know that fruits and vegetables add color to your plate, and they also help you get needed potassium. Fruits and vegetables are nutritious and can naturally have less sodium than many processed foods. 12/ Join the movement to be healthy for good. You can do it, and we’re here to help. We’ll keep you on track with shareable tips, videos and hacks. Visit our resource site: http:// www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating/eat-smart/ eat-smart-month.
