CIRCLE OF RED and build lifelong friendships

I have a history of heart disease and stroke in my family… my brother, his in-laws as well as several members of my wife’s family. I know you too may be impacted directly. - RAJAN AHUJA

My father died at the age of 54 due to a heart aneurysm. My grandfather and three of my paternal uncles all died from this at 54 also. My only brother died at 52. My precious daughter-in-law, Callie, lost her father when he was 56. Heart disease attacks so many and causes such devastation within entire families. - PEGGY AHUJA

Circle of Red is graciously sponsored by Texas Vein & Vascular/TVV MediSpa.

I am so impressed with the work done by the American Heart Association; education, research, CPR training and other events. I am honored to lend my support to this essential organization. - DOS GATES

Circle of Red ensures we have the knowledge to help women (and men) live longer. My grandmother lived a long and healthy life due to the research from the American Heart Association. Tragically, my good friend died on our 30th class reunion from heart disease. - STEPHANIE WATERMAN

The future of healthcare relies on working hand in hand with up-and-coming technological advances. The benefits that modern technology brings to the medical world by replacing paper records with electronic health records have been a major game changer by allowing for more effective patient care, improved public health, and ease of workflow. CHRISTUS Health is one of the many healthcare systems that is implementing new and great things to provide top-notch patient care by way of technology, but also expansion to fulfill more patient care needs. CHRISTUS Health is growing its medical footprint in Corpus Christi with the recent expansion of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic (CTC), a multi-specialty medical group, which is part of the CHRISTUS Spohn Health Care system. CTC has more than 1,000 clinicians representing more than 300 locations serving Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. This expansion includes over 100 primary and specialty care providers across 18 locations in Corpus Christi and its surrounding communities. More facilities means more patients, which also calls for the most innovative technology. With this increase in facilities, CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic has introduced a new electronic health record (EHR) system called Epic, which allows patients to gain immediate access to their health records via the MyChart

10

website or the smartphone app. The portal allows patients to perform a wide variety of actions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, where they can access medical records, exchange messages with their providers, view test results, pay bills, and more. Epic is designed to facilitate and improve the overall patient care experience at every CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic location in the region by providing a secure, integrated, and unified patient-centered database with convenient access to information that both clinicians and patients can benefit from. One of the local physicians, Crystal Campos Valls, M.D., Physician Leader, CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Corpus Christi, states that “new tools like Epic and MyChart are helping patients become more actively involved in their care and maintaining their health, while using smart phones, telehealth, and remote monitoring to create more ways for patients to access health care services and capture health information.”

Not only does Epic facilitate the way patients keep track of their health records, but it also improves how CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic providers communicate with one another, their patients, and the public. Dr. Valls also credits the new technology as “making it easier for patients and doctors and advanced practitioners to interact, thus improving communication, patient safety and patient-provider relationships.” Statistics and experience show that electronic health systems transform patient care, and it significantly improves workflow. Epic is an industry leader and is regularly named as the top of electronic health record systems, which has earned it dozens of national and international awards for quality. With the successful use of Epic across the system, the supported facilities within CHRISTUS Health and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic have earned the title of “America’s Most Wired” which is an award given to health systems who are investing in analyzing their data to support new delivery models and effective decision-making while training clinicians on how to use analytics to improve quality and provide access and control costs. “At CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic, we’re committed to continually improving our systems and health care services, as increasing evidence shows that these technologies and associated process changes can improve the quality of care and outcomes for our communities and support our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,” says Mark Winslow, VP of Clinic Operations, CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic, CHRISTUS Spohn. Everyone at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic is committed to serving the community by providing the best healthcare options and innovative technological advances within their hospitals and systems and hope to continue to bring the best in patient care to the community.

here are 22 food banks in Texas. Most of them could likely tell you stories of how 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted them. Coastal Bend Food Bank in Corpus Christi is one of them.

“We were two weeks from running out of food at the beginning of COVID,” said Bea Hanson, Executive Director of Coastal Bend Food Bank. “People lost their jobs and were coming to us. Food was going out of the warehouse as fast as it was coming in.”

During May and June, Coastal Bend was able to waive this cost, giving the agencies more than 2.6 million pounds of food for people in need, at no charge. “Part of our culture has always been to give back to the communities we serve, and the food bank has certainly always been at the top of our list,” said Hastings. “Frank knew our needs and knew it would help us,” Hanson said. “He made sure we were recipients of this gift. He saved us in this crisis.” Thanks to PlainsCapital Bank, the food bank was able to pay its employees and distribute 13.3 million pounds of food in 2020.

REALITY CHECK We Have Consequential Problems! By: CONNIE LAUGHLIN

E

veryone has problems today; if not, check for a pulse. We are fretting over a longer list today - current or potential health issues, financial matters, business concerns, and government affairs and the list goes on and on. We never know what we will be dealing with tomorrow. We are hearing talk about another pandemic, about the collapse of our global financial system, to nuclear war. The time has come to act! We are witnessing too many horrifying and historic events happening all around the globe. How long can our economy be propped up? We are on a collision course expecting a direct hit. Are you preparing to best protect your home and business, do you know what to do? Basically, it comes down to utterly understanding current affairs, and knowing the pitfalls if various things come to fruition. Do not assume it will all

hanging on by a thread. Not only is our financial and personal freedom in jeopardy, but generations to come will live with the effects of policies and laws being written today. From the book “How Do You Kill 11 Million People?” author Andy Andrews asks us why we think the ages of our world’s greatest civilizations average around two hundred years. He points out the identifiable sequences that lead to this demise. In the book, he is not stating we are headed for the world’s next holocaust, but that it “could” happen. In recent news we basically opened our border to the south adding more stress to those communities and our nation. Increasing already heightened security and health issues! We have been told our government is bankrupt, yet the government is handing out money as fast as they can print it. What is to become of us?

CONSEQUENTIAL BUSINESS INITIATIVES Are you involved in the overall well-being of your business the way you should be? Think it out - don’t just tend to the daily grind without ensuring your home and businesses are ready to handle what might come?

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat. –SUN TZU Excuse the vulgar acronym I am using here, but are you prepared for when a SHTF scenario happens? People commonly ask what the synonym implies, well it could mean the closure of your business, a lost job with no income, or catastrophic health or personal crisis, or it could mean outbreaks of violence in your neighborhood for an extended period! Is your company making cuts to numerous asset protection strategies? In any tactical scenario do not leave yourself bare when you need protection the most? Insurance and risk management plans should be the last to go. If your resources are already stretched thin let us look for alternative solutions. While you must absolutely examine every nook for ways to make cuts, streamline processes, eliminate time wasting activities, and save money certain things must be maintained for the well-being of the organization.

HEALTH & WELLNESS COACH

Investing in Your Health Now, Pays Off Later By: LISA G. WRIGHT

This month we want you to deep dive with us into a BILLION-dollar topic. No, that is not a typo! It is all about staying healthy as you age. This year, across the world people will spend $62 billion on anti-aging efforts. That’s one of those numbers that is so big, it’s hard to imagine. But imagine this: you do not have to break the bank to be healthy at EVERY age.

• Getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night builds a healthier and more focused brain. • Finding ways to manage stress keeps your brain and body happy. • Eating healthy foods flood your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally. • Building a social network will keep you feeling connected, which has a direct link to your feelings of wellness and well-being.

Your health & wellness is like your retirement account.

• And so much more!

The consistent investments you make NOW – by eating a healthy diet, working out regularly, taking care of your skin/ eyes/teeth, not smoking, etc. – pay off big-time deep into the future!

This means the workout plan you are following TODAY has the potential to pay off decades from now, and your decision to choose an apple vs. a cookie for your afternoon snack will, too!

And the BEST part is, it is never too late to start making those investments in your personal wellness account.

It is all about being CONSISTENT with small, good-for-you actions.

• Working out creates a strong base of muscle (and bone!) that will keep you strong as you get older. Plus, of course, it keeps your heart & body healthy!

Some ideas: • Take a walk after lunch • Ditch the sugary creamer in your morning coffee • Swap your soda for water • Hit the studio for 2 resistance training workouts this week Basically: What can you do TODAY that your FUTURE YOU will thank you for?

Here’s a challenge for you:

We’re all about helping our clients create simple (but life-changing!) habits to achieve REAL results. Be sure to check out our 21-day Longevity and Strength program today!

Come up with THREE actions you can commit to this month that can help you feel better NOW – and into the future!

Our programming is specifically designed for the active 50+-year-old, with many options, including small group IN-STUDIO training or LIVE training streamed into the comfort of your home. REFERENCE: www.ompages.co/your-personal-best-training-studio-longevity-and-strength-program

Healing the Body and Mind The 361 Wellness team brings breakthroughs in mental health treatments to South Texas. By: Kathleen Naderer

361 Wellness is the first and only neuro-wellness clinic in the Coastal Bend. Located at 6625 Wooldridge Road in Suite 301, the complex in front of the Bayview Behavioral Hospital, 361 Wellness opened its doors in November 2019. John Lusins, M.D., and Carrie Sessions, MSN, FNP-C, combine their extensive knowledge and expertise to fight on the frontlines in the battle for better mental health care. “Everything we do is to promote wellness and mental health,” Sessions said.

Sessions now runs the ketamine program, working closely with patients who come seeking relief from chronic pain, depression and anxiety, fibromyalgia, migraines, PTSD and more. She’s witnessed firsthand how this groundbreaking treatment can turn people’s lives around for the better.

The main mission of 361 Wellness is to provide another resource to the often inundated South Texas medical community. Both Lusins and Sessions have encountered patients who are struggling to find hope and healing, feeling either caught in a revolving door of medicine or lost in the deluge of patients waiting for access to mental health care professionals.

One person in particular stood out to her during 361 Wellness’ first Drops of Hope campaign. Drops of Hope is a nonprofit that offers free Kalypso Ketamine IV treatments to those in need. The first recipient was a combat vet suffering from severe treatment-resistant PTSD after several tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Sessions emphasized a message of hope for those afraid they’ve exhausted their resources. She explained that 361 Wellness services are accessible to all and provide an effective alternative to those who are not responding well to traditional allopathic medicine. At Lusins and Sessions’ clinic, patients can find a variety of unique and cutting-edge services not available elsewhere, including Kalypso Ketamine IV Infusions, NAD+IV Therapy and Vitamin IV Infusions and Injections. Sessions praised Lusins innovation for recognizing early on that ketamine would be a game changer in treatment-resistant care. The two had long talked about creating a neuro-wellness clinic, and Lusins research into ketamine helped their dream become a reality. “This [ketamine treatment] is not just a drug or quick fix,” Session said. “It has the potential to be the biggest breakthrough in mental health since the first serotonin reuptake inhibitor [Prozac].”

22

INSPIRE COASTAL BEND MAGAZINE  MAY 2021

Sessions recalled how desperate and concerned his family was, since he was borderline suicidal on a regular basis. “Within six treatments, he was a whole different person,” she said. “He was able to live his life again.” Another promising new treatment is NAD+IV Therapy. During a NAD session, a naturally occurring coenzyme of niacin is given over a period of four to six hours. This regenerates DNA, helping curb mental and physical declines, as well as managing withdrawals from alcohol and detoxing the body. Like medispas, 361 Wellness also offers injections and IV infusions that can be tailored to improve aesthetics. Unlike medispas, however, the neuro-wellness clinic’s primary focus remains mental health even when treating appearance. According to Sessions, mental and physical health are often linked together. For instance, she has noticed that patients seeking aesthetic treatment such as weight loss injections feel better not only physically, but mentally.

Most importantly, Sessions wants people to remember: “Be your own health and wellness advocate. Look up everything you’re putting in your body, because if you give your body what it needs, it will heal itself.”

“This can lead to a person having better self-esteem and feeling more self-empowered,” she said. “We address the psychological component to weight loss, like eating without guilt, and lifestyle adjustments, like increased exercise, which can act as a natural antidepressant.” Other injections and IV infusions provide vitamins that can help prevent illnesses, boost immune systems and provide supplementation that people often don’t realize they need. Sessions explained that, due to many modern diets, people may be unknowingly suffering from a vitamin deficiency. Sometimes the symptoms of these deficiencies are mistaken for other diseases. “One example is a B12 deficiency,” she said. “It can mimic a lot of mental health disorders, like depression and insomnia, or even physical disorders, like fibromyalgia.” But what if you take a daily vitamin? According to Sessions, between absorption through the stomach and possible interference from other medication, many of these over-the-counter vitamins end up having little to no effect. However, when patients receive an injection or IV, the vitamins are directly absorbed by red blood cells, meaning the body receives 100 percent of the vitamin and the patient notices an immediate difference.

The Cattery’s Catalyst How a dream became reality By: KATHLEEN NADERER // Photos by: TWINS Media

S

amantha Person has always been drawn to animals. As a little girl, she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. However, working at Oso Creek Animal Hospital during high school convinced her that she didn’t have the stomach for surgery. Thinking that her dream of helping animals was over, Samantha pursued other studies and career possibilities before settling on a corporate training job. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. “I loved that job and the people that I worked with, but I just didn’t feel fulfilled,” she said. Her job also required frequent travel, which meant she missed time with her loved ones, particularly Scott Person. Samantha and Scott had met in 1997, and she recalled his endless support as she sought her true calling. During a dinner conversation in 2007, they talked about what they would do if they won the lottery and money was not an object. Her response: Create a cagefree animal shelter, designed especially for cats. “Shelters across the country have focused primarily on dogs,” she explained. “I wanted to bring a spotlight to cats.” At the time, Samantha had no idea that such facilities existed. After some research, she learned about a cagefree shelter in Atlanta run by two

employees with community volunteers. She told herself, “If they can do it, then I can do it,” and set a goal of opening her shelter within a year. Her strength and determination transformed her dream into reality. Her mother had been a wonderful role model for Samantha, teaching her the value of hard work and perseverance in the face of disadvantages. Her mother was a single parent with a hearing impairment and tight finances; nevertheless, she put herself through college and gave Samantha the best life possible. With the inspiration and encouragement of her family and friends, Samantha began the challenging process of creating a nonprofit. Although she didn’t have funding or community contacts at the time, she was able to kick-start the grassroots organization with her personal savings. As others learned of her unique shelter idea, community support grew. “It was like every time we needed something, someone would show up,” she said with a smile. Thus, The Cattery was born. October marks the 12-year anniversary of The Cattery, as well as Samantha and Scott’s wedding. The couple married just two weeks before her shelter opened its doors. “I wouldn’t have done any of this without my husband believing in me,” Samantha said.

”We believe that everyone who has pets loves their pets, regardless of income.”

25

In 2008, she was invited to join the Animal Care Board. During her first month on the board, she realized that despite The Cattery adopting out 128 cats to loving homes the previous year, the Coastal Bend had still had to euthanize 300 cats in that month alone due to overpopulation. Shocked by this high number, Samantha researched the best way to fix this problem. She concluded that the best way to combat pet overpopulation is offering affordable or no-cost spay/ neuter programs. Although fixing an animal is the most effective way to reduce overpopulation, some pet owners cannot afford the cost. Securing funds for such a massive undertaking was challenging, but The Cattery proudly introduced the first low-cost mobile clinic to Corpus Christi in January 2012. Other shelter and rescue organizations soon recognized the significant impact of this program and followed suit.

“We believe that everyone who has pets loves their pets, regardless of income,” Samantha said. “Taking care of a pet may look different between families, but that doesn’t diminish their love for that pet.” The first six months of the mobile clinic were extremely stressful. Not only did they struggle to spread the word about their new services, but Samantha was also diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) that May. She persevered, however, and now The Cattery’s mobile clinic spays/neuters approximately 90 cats and dogs a week. That’s close to 30,000 animals throughout the Coastal Bend since 2012! Because The Cattery is both a no-kill shelter and a nonprofit, two of the biggest challenges they face are space and funding. As heartbreaking as it is, they can’t always help as many cats or people as they wish they could.

There are many ways to help support The Cattery. They depend heavily on individuals for both monetary and physical donations. Supporters can donate in person or online via The Cattery website, make purchases at their nonprofit thrift stores, Retail Therapy and Vintage Vibe (formerly Betty’s Trash to Treasures), or participate in their fundraisers. There is also a donation jar at the mobile clinic. “Even though somebody might be getting reduced or free spay/neuter, they still put money in the donation jar because they want to help somebody else, too,” Samantha said. Every day, Samantha is grateful that she can follow her passion, make a difference in the community and help the animals she loves. Currently, The Cattery has 112 cats at the shelter with an additional 80 in foster care and about 14 adoptions each week. She believes The Cattery has a bright future ahead. They will soon move locations, and the new shelter will have even more space for the felines. They also hope to set up a new stationary clinic in Corpus Christi while maintaining their mobile clinic to serve surrounding areas.

TSA PreCheck Enrollment Event Coming Soon to CCIA! Still a great deal if you plan to travel soon By: KIM BRIDGER-HUNT

CCIA TO HOST A TSA PRECHECK ENROLLMENT EVENT During the week of May 10th, CCIA will once again host a TSA PreCheck Enrollment event. The goal is to make it easy for travelers to get through the enrollment process so they can enjoy the perks of PreCheck when they travel. To guarantee participation in the event, travelers will need to register ahead of time for an appointment. Walk-ins are accepted as time allows, although there may be a longer wait for you if you show up without an appointment. There are several steps to take to assure a smooth enrollment on the day you arrive: • Go on to our website at corpuschristiairport.com and click on the TSA PreCheck button. Follow the instructions for filling out the PreCheck application before the day of your appointment. • Once you complete the application, the system will prompt you to choose an appointment location and time. The CCIA location will be added to the choices in mid-April.

A

ll indications are that more and more of you are making plans to travel by air again. At Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA), traffic continues to steadily increase. During March, the couple weeks of Spring Break brought a noticeably higher number of people into the terminal. There were lots of families and groups here to catch flights. And this is an encouraging sign when you consider that one year ago, when the pandemic hit, air travel came to a virtual standstill. As more people get vaccinated and feel comfortable traveling, some of the typical travel related experiences will begin to crop up again. Even though you’ll rarely see a long line or big crowd at CCIA, if you are traveling to a larger city and will have to depart out of that larger airport, you’ll likely begin to experience some lines again, particularly at the TSA Security Checkpoint. That’s where the TSA PreCheck designation can really help make your experience better and maybe even safer. Once you become a TSA PreChecker, you are eligible to go through a shorter security line, allowed to keep your shoes and jackets on, and may even be allowed to keep your liquids and electronics in your carry-on bag during screening. Just keep in mind that the exact protocols can vary from airport to airport.

• Once you have made your appointment, please pay attention to the required items you will need to bring with you: photo ID, Certified copy of Birth Certificate or your Passport, acceptable form of payment which is Credit/Debit Card or Business check. The fee is $85 and gives you the PreCheck status for 5 years. No personal checks or cash will be accepted. • Each applicant will be fingerprinted for the background check. It typically takes 2-3 weeks to hear back. If you are approved for the PreCheck designation, you will not receive a card, but rather a letter from the TSA which will include your KTN, Known Traveler Number. This number will be used from now on when you book travel on a participating airline.

Why CASA Volunteers are Crucial for Children in Foster Care Nurturing Resiliency, One Family at a Time By: SAMANTHA KOEPP-STEMPLINGER

e can have many parental figures in our lives, with different dynamics in each of those relationships. Regardless of the connotation we associate with those relationships, they all influence how we evolve. These can be life lasting relationships or people who are part of our lives for a period of time.

W

For youth in foster care, the relationships within their family of origin are unique to every child. The goal is not to replace those relationships but help to strengthen relationships that are in the best interest of the child. At the same time, building a network of long-term support to nurture the child during a time of crisis and extends into building their future. There can be a lot of inconsistency during a child’s time in foster care, which is why CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are crucial. These volunteers are by the child’s side throughout the entirety of their time in foster care. They make sure needs are met, a strong support network is established and the child knows they are loved. CASA volunteers often become a parental influence during this time as a source of nurturing and guidance, not only helping youth but also their families navigate through the child welfare system.

Libby Martin’s extensive history of working in the education system plus time spent volunteering with an emergency shelter familiarized CASA Volunteer Libby Martin her with various family dynamics, vulnerable youth and the child welfare system. So it is not a surprise that after 20 years in education as a teacher, campus intervention specialist and assistant principal, upon beginning her next chapter in life she chose to become a CASA Volunteer in March 2020. She knew that her background in education would be an asset, especially her experience with the special education referral and evaluation process. When reviewing cases to select as her first case to be appointed as a CASA, her CASA Supervisor showed her a case with 2 young children, one with

extensive special needs. Libby knew it was the case for her. Both children had severe developmental and medical needs that were not being met, causing them to be placed in foster care. Both parents loved and wanted the best for their children but they themselves struggled with significant issues. Over the past year, the father had made significant progress in demonstrating his ability to care for his children. At the most recent court hearing, all the parties involved in the case felt the father was not yet ready for full custody of the children- everyone except Libby. She was able to provide specific instances in which he had not only created a stable home for the children, but he was also actively involved in meeting their developmental and medical needs. After Libby’s testimony, the Judge ordered for the children to be placed with their father on a return and monitor basis. Libby is still involved in the case until it closes. Throughout the case Libby was a source of support for the father, as it was in the best interest of the children. She helped guide him in enrolling one of the children in school, applying for transportation to school for the child with special needs and helping to acquire beds through Foster Angels of South Texas. Because of Libby’s experience but even more importantly her ability to compassionately empower, a family has been reconnected and strengthened. There are many ways in which someone can be a maternal or paternal figure and they are all significant, no matter in what capacity or for what length of time.

TASTE

Ramen-Inspired Deviled Eggs By: MANDY ASHCRAFT, TOM CURRY, AND CHRISTIAN LAPUZ // Photo by: DUSTIN ASHCRAFT

These marbled appetizers are pretty to look at but simple to make, and elevate a Southern classic with an Asian-inspired twist. Reminiscent of the flavors you love in ramen, this recipe makes 2 dozen bite-sized “bowls” for your next dinner party. Don’t love spice? This is easily customizable to your taste. You may prefer a sweet chili sauce instead of Sriracha. Here in the Inspire Test Kitchen we experimented with Hellman’s Creamy Honey Chili Sauce in place of the Sriracha, but omitted the mayo, and loved that version too! Ingredients: 1 dozen large eggs 1 cup soy sauce 2 tbsp brown sugar 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1 cup cold water 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tbsp yellow mustard 2 tbsp Sriracha Garnish options: green onions, fried onions, hoisin sauce, black sesame seeds, crispy edamame, cilantro, anything else you love in a bowl of ramen!

30

Instructions: 1. Add uncooked eggs to a medium pot and fill with water until eggs are just barely covered. Heat to boiling, uncovered. Once the pot reaches a full boil, place the lid and turn off the heat. Do not remove from burner. 2. After 10 minutes, pour off the hot water and fill the pot (with eggs) with cold water. Set aside. 3. In a small pot, bring soy sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar to a boil. Remove from heat and add cold water, stirring. Set aside. 4. Take a spoon and carefully shatter the eggshells one at a time with the back of the spoon, without removing the shells. Do not peel them.

INSPIRE COASTAL BEND MAGAZINE  MAY 2021

5. Carefully place eggs and soy sauce mixture in a bowl or large Ziploc bag. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but 8 hours works best if you want a noticeable marbled effect. Turn the eggs occasionally so that they’re evenly soaking in the sauce. 6. Remove eggs from bowl and peel away shattered shells carefully. Cut eggs in half and scoop yolks into a small bowl. Discard sauce. 7. To the yolks, add mayo, mustard, and sriracha to taste. Add honey if you need to tone down the spice, or add more Sriracha to turn up the heat. 8. Spoon (or use a piping bag) yolk mixture into egg halves. Garnish and refrigerate until ready to serve.
