TUNGSTEN MINING IS CRITICAL TO EVERYDAY OBJECTS SUCH AS LIGHTBULBS, XRAY MACHINES AND A NUMBER OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

New production sources of tungsten are critical to maintaining the health care industry supply. BY: LEWIS BLACK

he trade relations between China and the United States have been tense over the last few years. This past January, China and the United States signed a “phase one” trade deal, where China agreed to buy an additional $200 billion of American goods and services over the following two years. This deal resulted in the suspension of a planned tariff last December on approximately $162 billion worth of Chinese goods, with an existing 15 percent duty on imports worth around $110 billion halved.

T

While the tariffs affect many different types of goods that are imported and exported between the two countries, there is another battle brewing in this growing trade war: strategic metals. Rare specialty metals such as tungsten are used in almost all medical devices and medical manufacturing supplies

The consequences of a continued strained supply of rare-earths such as tungsten would be disastrous to the U.S. health care system.

today. Taking into consideration the current COVID-19 pandemic, access to medical manufacturing and supplies is more critical than ever before. Tungsten is listed as the most high-risk metal on earth, and is also used in most medical devices and tests we have today. Without it, it would be impossible to run a test as simple as an X-Ray. China has dominated the medical supply chain For years, China has viewed its domi-

nance in strategic earth metals as potential leverage that can be used against the United States, which includes trade disputes. Research firms and industry observers1 believe China values its strategic metals dominance for geopolitical values over commercial gain. Rare specialty metals such as tungsten are used for a variety of advanced technologies within the medical industry, including radiation shielding and medical isotope transport and containment. Without tungsten, hospitals would run out of necessary everyday objects such as syringe shields and radioactive source containers. According to a report2 by consulting firm Horizon Advisory, China cultivated its

rare-earth industry through years of state subsidies and is prepared to use it as a geopolitical weapon, which will drastically affect medical supplies in the United States, causing a health care crisis. China controls the market for nearly 35 precious minerals and metals that are important to the United States for medical manufacturing, and tungsten is among them. Furthermore, the second largest tungsten supplier, located in Vietnam, sourced 6 million metric tons last year. Other regions outside the United States such as Russia, Austria and the United Kingdom, are also known to have important tungsten sources. What’s at stake The issue at hand is that China has limited the amount of tungsten exports that can be shipped to the United States, and this has caused great concern about the overall supply chain of the material, specifically in a time where the United States is dependent on its health care system. In what was seen as an aggressive move, Chinese President Xi Jinping toured a region of the country last year that bills itself as a rare-earths kingdom, and this rhetoric3 was widely viewed as China strong-arming much of the rest of the world and flexing its muscle for strategic metals supply. What’s at stake is a more bountiful supply chain of strategic metals such as tungsten. To combat this, the U.S. Defense Department is starting a new grants program to help develop a processing facility at Mountain Pass in California, currently the only mine in the United States for rare-earths materials. However, U.S. medical manufacturers need more supply, and soon. New tungsten production will open the global supply chain Other new entrants into the market have begun mining projects throughout the world that are mining for tungsten. These efforts are critically important to

increasing supply levels and exports back to the United States, which will benefit the overall global supply chain of tungsten for production and manufacturing and enable the United States to depend on its own medical manufacturing supply. The Korea Tungsten Project located in the Sangdong Mine of South Korea hosts one of the largest tungsten resources in the world. This mine was the leading global tungsten producer for more than 40 years, and it has the potential to produce 50 percent of the non-Chinese world’s tungsten supply. The project has become a center of focus recently for resource experts, miners, investors, shareholders and other interested parties around the globe. Without access to rare-earths such as tungsten found in locations such as the Sangdong Mine, the consequences of a continued strained supply of these metals would be disastrous to the U.S. health care system, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, opening the supply chain for these rare-earths will help alleviate any medical supply threats that continue to grow from China and its long-held dominance of the market. Hopefully, the Sangdong Mine is one example of relief U.S. and global medical manufacturers will see from the mining and production of tungsten in an effort to ease the supply chain of this precious raw material, which is sorely needed for some of today’s most important health care uses.

Helping Hearts Home health social workers in the community BY: KATE COLLINS and DEBRA BROOKER

ocial workers serve with a helping heart and aim to transform the lives of those they interact with. We hold many roles that impact the community in different ways. One example is advocating for rights and services for individuals. Another role is brokering services, linking clients to a service they may benefit from. Social workers also conduct case management to locate and access services for clients.

S

One important aspect of social work is educating families and individuals on the myriad of available options, services and benefits. Social workers often facilitate groups aiming toward the development of the community and self, such as policy change and therapy groups.

within the community to ensure holistic care for the patient and caregivers. It is the role of the social worker to instill the caregivers with hope and confidence, so they remain steady and strong through positive care of the patient. Social workers at AAdi Home Health & Hospice take the time to listen to the specific needs of patients and their families. We help address the health issues that are often impacted by psychosocial factors, such as economic concerns, a patient’s lack of support with daily activities, difficulty coping with illness, making tough decisions including health and end-of-life decisions and difficulty communicating with community services. We meet face-to-face with our patients in their homes or in facilities (when feasible, with some restraints imposed by COVID-19) and build rapport. Social workers can help assess needs and make appropriate referrals to local and state resources, as well as assist with referrals to community resources for help with food, utility assistance and other economic needs. We also troubleshoot problems with initiation and gaps in services, assist with advanced directives, provide information on resources to help with mental illness and educate on disease processes and factors of aging.

One of the most common concerns we address is the need for interventions when patients are no longer able to care for themselves. Developing a relationship and observing the home environment assist in understanding the patient’s lack of ability to manage their activities of daily living, including health needs and personal hygiene. Nursing staff and social workers work as a team to communicate observations and concerns related to that patient to the physician. Often, family members are not able to assist their loved ones due to living and working in other states or other parts of Texas. AAdi social workers can help families of nursing home residents, who have been unable to visit their loved ones, learn about relocation programs that may make care in the community possible. Social workers with AAdi participate in weekly meetings with the nurses, chaplains and physicians to better understand the needs of patients and their families, in order to address any psychosocial concerns. We play a vital role in the interdisciplinary focus at AAdi to ensure that the needs of our patients and families are met.

There are many settings in which social workers impact the community, including schools, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, home health agencies and hospices. Home health social work is often the only link a homebound patient and his or her caregivers have with the community and its resources. Patients come with a spectrum of existing support structures, including no support at all or a friend/family providing caregiving. Social workers in home health collaborate with agencies

COVER STORY

THE TEAM THAT CARES

AAdi Home Health & Hospice continues its mission amid the COVID-19 outbreak. By STEVEN ALFORD Photos by TWINS MEDIA

PG 16

CLINT RENDALL

isn’t your typical health care CEO. He is the new leader at AAdi Home Health & Hospice in a time that has been anything but typical for the health care industry. Over the years, his career has taken a number of interesting twists and turns, which led him to the Coastal Bend. Rendall graduated from Rice University with a degree in chemical engineering, which led to a variety of project management roles in the natural gas industry. Later, he was accepted into a dual mechanical engineering/MBA program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examining the operations, strategy and management challenges in health care.

PG 18

After spending his entire early career in large corporations, Rendall realized his passion was actually focused on small business. He was also interested in finding a role that had a direct, positive impact on the community around him. While searching for the perfect

small-business health care opportunity, he discovered AAdi Home Health & Hospice right here in Corpus Christi. “My wife and I were very interested in returning to South Texas, where we had spent the majority of our adult lives,” Rendall says. “I was fascinated with the home health industry, which I’d had very little exposure to prior to business school. MIT’s motto, mens et manus, translates to “mind and hand” in Latin, the idea that education should have a practical application. I couldn’t think of a better industry to apply that mentality than home health.”

At AAdi Home Health, the highly experienced and dedicated team provides home health, palliative care and hospice services for patients in the comfort of their own homes. Services include nursing, advanced wound care, home health aides, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and more. With each patient, AAdi’s professional staff goes above and beyond by providing the best health care while caring deeply about those they serve. As it turns out, Rendall discovered the company at just the right opportunity. AAdi’s previous owners were looking to sell the business and retire after building it into a very well-respected, homegrown agency in the Coastal Bend. Last fall, Rendall was able to strike the right deal with the owners. “Our transaction last year kept AAdi family-owned and locally operated,” he added. Rendall, his wife, Margeux, and their children, Gavin, Adelaide and Coralie, relocated to Corpus Christi and immediately fell in love with

the beach and all of the outdoor activities the area has to offer. They say they’ve found a long-term home.

We are all in this together.” (PPE), just like all other health care providers. With a novel, unknown virus, Rendall says patients were understandably scared, and clinicians were concerned. Despite all of this, the AAdi team rose to the occasion, and continue their commitment to providing high-quality care to South Texas patients.

But the afterglow would be short-lived. The handover of the company occurred in fall 2019, less than six months before the COVID-19 outbreak would change the health care landscape forever. Rendall says that, like every other small business nationwide, COVID-19 has been a game changer for AAdi.

“We quickly assembled a COVID-19 team of nurses who have become experts in infection control,” Rendall recalls.

In the early days in March, the staff hurried to secure personal protective equipment

AAdi now procures PPE from a variety of sources and has been able to supply

field staff with appropriate PPE for every single visit, ensuring the safety for both patients and employees. In the time since, the AAdi team has successfully cared for dozens of COVID-19 patients and takes pride in being able to help free up hospital beds for those in greatest need of acute care. “As a whole, I feel our team overall is adapting very well to the changes and challenges posed by this pandemic,” says Oscar Limas, R.N., director of program operations at AAdi Home Health & Hospice. “Our

staff quickly understood the importance and severity of the situation, and immediately implemented utilization of guidelines set forth by government, state, county and city agencies.” AAdi’s main focus now is keeping employees and patients safe. All staff are required to wear a medical mask and goggles or face shield to every visit. Nurses who see patients don PPE outside patients’ homes and pre-screen every patient before seeing them.

»

Italy and elsewhere have shown that a more distributed model of care (as opposed to centralized in a hospital or clinic) is safer and more effective for many patients during the pandemic. We also anticipate that our ramped-up infection control protocols will be necessary for the foreseeable future.” In order to facilitate the safety of patients, physicians are now able to order home health for patients via telehealth visits. In addition, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can now write home health referrals for their patients. These commonsense changes to the regulations make it easier than ever for patients to receive the care they need in the home.

AAdi has been growing steadily to meet the increasing demand for in-home health care.”

The entire company has adapted to the new normal brought on by the coronavirus through socially distancing, screening themselves before arriving to work and comforting one another when anxiety and stress set in, employees say. “I learned that we are all in this together: caring for patients, caring for our staff, constantly educating ourselves on best practice and how to make a patient’s home as safe and as isolated as a hospital,” said

Amanda Kiss, R.N., administrator of AAdi Home Health & Hospice. Looking ahead, Rendall and his team believe the coronavirus is not going away any time soon. They remain vigilant in providing the utmost patient and employee safety. “AAdi has been growing steadily to meet the increasing demand for in-home health care,” Rendall shares. “We expect that trend to continue, as studies in

Rendall believes the COVID-19 outbreak should be a wake-up call to the American public, especially here in the Coastal Bend. By focusing on our health, taking the proper hygiene precautions and socially distancing, residents can better protect themselves and their loved ones – which in turn will take the burden off hospitals and create a healthier community. “Americans as a whole must turn our focus toward eating healthy, exercising and

preventive care visits,” he says. “Healthy habits established now will outlast the current pandemic, and will decrease our health care costs, improve mental health and lengthen our lives.” To improve the fight against the virus, the AAdi team encourages South Texas residents to eat a healthy, balanced diet; exercise regularly; get adequate sleep; and remove life stressors that can affect mental health. Those measures, along with practicing good hand hygiene every day and wearing a facial covering when in public areas, can give South Texans a fighting chance against a virus unlike any the health care community has encountered before. In the face of such uncertainty, the AAdi team continues their mission of providing quality, coordinated in-home care to residents of the Coastal Bend when they need them most. “It takes a strong team to survive a year like the Coastal Bend has had, with the pandemic and hurricane,” Rendall says. “Amanda, Oscar and Kristy have done an amazing job of leading us through a difficult time – and I’m proud to be part of such an amazing team.”

SENIOR CARE

Gold Standard Conviva’s unique business model lends itself to successful primary care for its senior patients. BY: JOSE BOZA

C

onviva Care Centers is a care delivery organization that prides itself on building a business model focused on strong doctor-patient relationships and setting the gold standard of care for the senior population – especially in the tumultuous era of COVID-19.

“As a physician-led network of 300 primary care doctors and 800 affiliates in Texas and Florida, we pride ourselves on being an organization that creates strong bonds with our senior patients,” says Steve Lee, M.D., president of the Conviva Physician Group. “Seniors placing their trust in our physicians is a critical component, especially in this unfortunate climate of anxiety and uncertainty. We all share the same mission of creating a unique doctor-patient experience unlike any other.” At every center, Conviva’s health care experts take all of the necessary safety precautions to provide proper care while

ABOUT CONVIVA Conviva continues to reinvent excellence in health care by embracing meaningful patient relationships focused on producing optimal health outcomes. With more than 90 convenient locations throughout Texas (Corpus Christi, El Paso and San Antonio) and Florida (Broward County, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Miami-Dade County, Palm Beach County and Tampa/Gulf Coast), the vast network of Conviva Care Centers is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of more than 300 primary care physicians and over 800 affiliated specialists who provide a wide range of vital health care services that patients require daily, including the advantages of senior care activity centers and 24/7 on-call physicians. The success of Conviva is measured by its patients’ clinical outcomes and long-term health benefits.

Its clinicians understand that heart issues, diabetes, emphysema, asthma and other chronic conditions require regular, closely monitored coordinated care.

reducing the risk of COVID-19. “Many senior patients live with multiple chronic conditions, so a primary focus is to safeguard their short- and long-term health,” Lee said. “We must stay healthy so they can remain healthy, and that calls for team members, doctors and nurses to take every precaution, adhere to CDC guidelines, wear protective equipment and sanitize centers daily.”

Another benefit of Conviva’s business model is that it allows physicians to concentrate their time on patient care. Since a management services organization handles the company’s operational functions, clinicians at Conviva are free to do what they do best: care for patients. This focus reshapes the patient-doctor dynamic.

Telemedicine visits are also available to patients whose care does not require an in-person appointment. Conviva focuses on early screening and prevention, advances in technology and new surgical techniques to help seniors live longer, healthier lives.

Conviva proves it belongs in an elite group of health care providers with recent recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance with its NCQA PatientCentered Medical Home recognition and NCQA Diabetes recognition.

efore the coronavirus crisis, Mike was dancing through his healthiest period in years – literally. He’d been taking ballroom dance classes for a few months and loving it. Not only was it fun and social, but Mike, 62, also found it great for his weight and health. He’d slimmed down and gained stamina, and the fancy footwork boosted his mood, confidence and balance.

MORTON AND OTHERS ADVISE: • Plan meals and prepare healthy snacks. • Pay attention to what you’re eating and how much, shop carefully to avoid packaged junk and look for whole foods and proteins. • Watch out for drinking, smoking, overeating and other harmful ways to wind down. Instead, exercise, meditate and practice creativity to lower stress.

to Dr. John Morton of Yale University. One or two pounds a week is good, Morton says. “If you want to cut back by 500 calories a day, that might mean you are exercising the equivalent of 200 calories and cutting out 300 calories in your diet.” More sugar, stress and alcohol will take you down one path.
