KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Gender puts women more at risk for stroke. Here’s what you need to know. SPECIAL TO INSPIRE COASTAL BEND

t was more than six years ago when Laura Trammell took the day off from work in the human resources department at Corpus Christi City Hall for her son’s birthday. It was a day that changed her life. After returning home from delivering cupcakes to her son’s school, she had an event that left her unable to speak or walk. Trammell suffered a brain aneurysm and a stroke. In the battle of the sexes, here’s one that women – often unknowingly – take the lead in: About 55,000 more women than men have strokes every year. Strokes kill more women than men annually, making it the No. 3 leading cause of death in women. “To say I was surprised about having a stroke is an understatement,” Trammell says. “I always thought a man would be more likely to have stroke than me. I found out the hard way that’s not true.” This gender misconception about strokes is common, according to Dr. Michael Fuentes, medical director of Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital. “Most people don’t realize that women suffer strokes more frequently than men,” he says. “If you’re a woman, you share a lot of the same risk factors for strokes as a man, but a woman’s risk also is influenced by hormones, reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth and other gender-related factors.” For example, birth control pills may double the risk of stroke, especially in women with high blood pressure or who smoke. And, according to the American Heart Association, hormone replacement therapy – once thought to reduce stroke risk – in fact, actually increases it. A recent study shared through the National Stroke Association listed these factors that have been found to increase stroke risk in women:

Menstruation before the age of 10

Menopause before age 45

Low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS)

Taking oral estrogen or combined oral contraceptives

The study also showed a history of pregnancy complications can also indicate higher stroke risk. These problems include gestational diabetes and high blood pressure during or immediately after pregnancy. “Add this to other general risk factors for stroke like family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, lack of exercise and being overweight,” Fuentes says, “and it becomes clearer as to why women can be more at risk for stroke than men.” Trammell was treated at a local hospital for initial care before being transferred to Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital. She spent more than two months receiving rehabilitation to help her recover, which included daily physical, occupational and speech therapy. “Everyone there was just so wonderful,” she says. “I went into the rehabilitation hospital not able to talk or walk, and I’m able to do those things now. My words are hard to come by, but I can speak clearly. My hand and foot on the right side of my body don’t work well, but my arms and legs move. I’m so grateful that I’ve recovered this far.” “Whatever stage of life a woman is in, it’s important that she be aware of all the risk factors of stroke,” Fuentes says. “As it’s often said, ‘knowledge is power.’ And in this case, the more knowledgeable a woman is about her stroke risk factors, the more she’ll be able to understand how she can be affected and work with her physician or health care provider, as appropriate, to reduce them.”

Corpus Christi Rehabilitation Hospital is located at 5726 Esplanade Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas. The hospital provides specialized physical rehabilitation services to patients recovering from or living with disabilities caused by injuries, illnesses or chronic medical conditions. The hospital is ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation, and its stroke rehabilitation program has been certified by The Joint Commission. NEVER TOO LATE! Adulthood can be the perfect time for braces.

Orthodontists can make your teeth look great and give patients additional health benefits, as well. Teeth that are not straight frequently get worse over time, creating problems with chewing and making them difficult to clean. If the problem is bad enough, it can even lead to gum disease, headaches and jaw problems. After your orthodontic treatment, your teeth won’t just look better – they will feel better and be healthier, too. At CC Braces, we’re proud to offer options for every lifestyle. Many adults wish for straighter teeth, but don’t want to spend months or years with metal brackets and wires. With the help of the newest orthodontic technology in clear aligners, such as Invisalign, we are able to create the same beautiful smiles with barely noticeable appliances. Whether you want your braces to be as bold and wild as you or to blend in on your wedding day, there’s an option for you at CC Braces. We offer a no-pressure complementary consultation for free if you’re ready to get started on that dream smile today or just want to discuss a few options. CC Braces even offer a free orthodontic assessment when you send pictures of your teeth by text. Visit our website to learn more about our quick and free online assessment at ccbraces.com/online-assessment-tool. With a board-certified orthodontist and a friendly, caring staff, CC Braces is ready to make you smile!

IF YOU HAVE EVER FELT THE NEED TO HIDE YOUR TEETH, WE CAN GIVE YOU THE PERFECT SMILE THAT YOU CAN BE PROUD TO SHOW ANYWHERE.”

hen most people think about braces, they immediately assume we’re talking about young teens and children. However, millions of adults were unable to get braces in their youth. At CC Braces, we think adulthood is a perfect time to consider orthodontic treatment, and that you have not missed your chance for a perfect smile at all! Crooked teeth can often be a source of self-consciousness for adults, but many think there isn’t anything they can do about it. According to board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Mihalik, “Anyone who has ever felt the need to hide their teeth – we can help and give them the perfect smile they can be proud to show anywhere.” In fact, of all the patients currently being treated by certified orthodontists, one in four is an adult, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. So any time is a good time to start work on your dream smile.

SHOW SOME SKIN

Just in time for summer, rejuvenate your body with a customized mommy makeover.

B

ecoming a parent is often one of the most rewarding events in one’s life; however, with the accomplishment and joys of motherhood often come the physical demands and stresses of pregnancy and childbirth. Carrying a baby, childbirth, breast milk production and breastfeeding leave a woman’s body much different than it was previously. Plastic surgery offers solutions to rejuvenate women’s bodies via a combination of customizable breast and

body procedures. The combination of abdominal and breast procedures are routinely done as a “mommy makeover.” Some of the most common procedures that a mommy makeover can include are breast augmentation (breast implants), mastopexy (breast lift), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction. When struggling with loose or saggy skin in the abdomen, one of the best solutions is an abdominoplasty. This procedure removes excess skin below the umbilicus (belly button), tightens

the abdominal muscles back together and reshapes the belly button, leaving a flat and tightened tummy. If excess fat and a bulging abdomen are your main concern, liposuction may be the solution for you! As one of America’s fastest-growing and most popular surgical procedures, liposuction is not a method of weight loss, but is a way to improve body contours, leaving a more sculpted appearance. If you have concerns with loose skin and excess fat affecting your body contours, the combination of a tummy tuck and liposuction of the back and flanks may be the solution for you. For many women, recapturing a more youthful figure starts with the breasts. For a breast augmentation, the breasts are enhanced with implants to restore a youthful and fuller-looking breast. Mastopexy, or breast lift, can restore youthful-looking breasts by removing excess skin and breast tissue, resulting in a perkier appearance. When done together, a breast augmentation and breast lift could be the dynamic duo in achieving the desired results. During your consultation with your plastic surgeon about a mommy makeover, a thorough one-on-one evaluation and assessment is performed. Each area of concern is carefully evaluated, and a customized surgical treatment plan is determined. These different breast and body procedures can be done individually to target one’s areas of concern, but they are often done in combination in a customized mommy makeover.

AESTHETIC MAGIC Healing and renewal with platelet rich plasma By: LORRAINE ANTONI

The beauty of wound and tissue healing is that the “injury” itself begins the healing cascade. However, when PRP is injected into already damaged tissue, it promotes a natural acceleration in healing. PRP and the healing process attract stem cells, trigger new collagen production and, finally, cause strengthening and tightening of the tissue in the treated area. Along with improving wound healing, PRP has been shown to promote an overall rejuvenation of damaged skin. PRP can be injected into fine lines and increase lost volume in maturing skin. PRP is now commonly used in “facials.” By mobilizing the patient’s own stem cells, PRP increases collagen and elastin and improves skin texture.

Hair loss can be distressing for both men and women. Another area where PRP shines is in hair rejuvenation. PRP can be injected into the scalp to promote new hair growth and prevent early cell death. Growth factors in the PRP activate the proliferative phase and produce new hair follicle units. Far from magic, PRP can hasten the healing process of wounds and renew waning skin. The growth factors in PRP work to revitalize damaged and declining tissue. PRP activates area stem cells to rejuvenate and strengthen skin, repair failing hair follicles and stimulate new growth.

PRP IS A SUBSTANCE THAT IS EXTRACTED FROM A PATIENT’S OWN BLOOD.

For more information, contact LORRAINE ANTONI, RN, WCC, FNP-C, at Corpus Christi Regenerative Therapy: 361-851-0545.

utologous platelet rich plasma is an emerging giant in aesthetics. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used for more than 20 years in various wound-healing situations, including surgical, dental, orthopedic, dermatology and aesthetic skin and hair rejuvenation. PRP is a substance that is extracted from a patient’s own blood. PRP is prepared in a way in which the red blood cells are removed and the remaining plasma is concentrated with platelets and white blood cells. Before transplanting into the area of concern, the platelets are activated, releasing their growth factors into the plasma. These growth factors begin a cascade of events that facilitate repair and regeneration in the treated area. After platelet activation and hemostasis, there are three more stages of wound healing and collagen repair. The first stage is inflammation, which begins with platelet activation. This is when the growth factors are released and collagen is produced in the area. The inflammation stage can last up to three days. Next is the proliferative stage of healing, when fibroblasts build new tissue and blood vessels. This stage can last for weeks. The final stage begins about 21 days after platelet activation. This is the maturation or remodeling stage. During remodeling, the collagen matures and strengthens. Remodeling can last a year or more.

CANCER. There are few things more frightening than receiving this diagnosis. One of the greatest comforts when fighting this disease is the knowledge that you are not alone – that you will have support from your loved ones, as well as a team of medical professionals who will be by your side to provide the best personalized treatment and care plans possible. CHRISTUS Spohn’s nationally recognized Cancer Centers, located in Corpus Christi, Calallen and Alice, are committed to bringing the highest-quality cancer care to the Coastal Bend, connecting patients with teams of physicians and outpatient care providers. The CHRISTUS Spohn cancer care team is lead by three oncologists: Kin W. Au, M.D.; Michael E. Nash, M.D.; and Swetha Panati, M.D. Experts in their fields, these three doctors recognize the need for a multidisciplinary approach toward cancer care. As part of CHRISTUS Physician Group (CPG), they are able to use their combined expertise and specialties, as well as those of the rest of the CPG network, to provide the most advanced care possible for patients. This collaboration and coordination between surgeons, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, therapists, other specialists, nurses and assistants is what sets CHRISTUS apart. Although CHRISTUS has a century-long history of comprehensive, elevated medical services in the local community, the Cancer Center is a relatively new addition to their network. “The Coastal Bend has been unfortunately underserved as far as oncology services go,” Nash said while explaining why a cancer program such as this is vital to the community. The Cancer Centers offer convenient locations for many local cancer patients pursuing treatment options. As the region’s only cancer program nationally accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center brings much-needed services, including infusion therapy, radiation therapy and on-

cology surgery to patients who may not have the ability to travel to larger cities such as Houston for treatment. Au, Nash and Panati are truly dedicated to diagnosing and treating cancer, as well as preserving the quality of life throughout the treatment process. They do this by staying updated and trained in the latest therapies and techniques, as well as by maintaining a well-equipped facility. For instance, Au emphasized the state-of-the-art technology they incorporate into treatment planning, such as the TomoTherapy System and CyberKnife, alongside more widespread and popular radiation techniques, like linear accelerator units. In fact, CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center has the only TomoTherapy and CyberKnife units in the region. “These two units are extremely accurate and targeted, minimizing the risks of toxicity, damage and other negative side effects of radiation therapy to the surrounding tissue and organs,” he said. Competence and compassion are equally important virtues at CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center. “The most gratifying aspect of my career has been helping all these amazing people fight through cancer, being their support, giving them hope and the best shot at beating their cancer,” Panati said. “But it’s not only about beating cancer; we also make sure our patients have good quality of life and can spend time with their loved ones.” CHRISTUS recognizes that cancer does not just affect the body and seeks to heal the whole person. An onsite chapel, chaplain and healing garden, as well as patient navigators, dieticians, case managers, palliative care teams, support groups and community volunteers, are all available to help encourage spiritual and emotional wellness. “At CHRISTUS Spohn, we believe in comprehensive cancer care, meaning preventive, treatment and rehabilitation care,” Au said.

MEET THE TEAM KIN W. AU, M.D. Dr. Kin W. Au, board-certified in radiation oncology, provided coverage for the radiation oncologists at the CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center previously before joining CPG as a permanent member last July. He graduated from Taipei Medical University in Taiwan, received a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, completed his residency at the Northwestern University in Chicago and completed a clinical fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Au has lived and worked all over, but he was drawn to the Coastal Bend because of its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. He grew up in Hong Kong and developed a love for living near the water. He has been a member of the local medical community for many years and credits his locum experience with helping him become more understanding, adaptive and flexible in individualizing care for his patients.

MICHAEL E. NASH, M.D. Dr. Michael E. Nash, board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hospice and palliative medicine, has practiced medicine for more than 30 years. Although he left private practice in 2012 to explore a career in academic medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine and Baylor Scott & White Healthcare, he felt called to return to the practice and joined CPG in July 2018. Originally from Tennessee, Nash called Corpus Christi home for more than 20 years and was happy for the opportunity to return and serve his community. He believes CHRISTUS gives him the ability to help members of the Coastal Bend who need it the most. “We are called to care for many patients and families without insurance or with marginal insurance,” he said. “This requires not only patience, but creativity as we find way to deliver quality care to those with limited resources.”

SWETHA PANATI, M.D. Dr. Swetha Panati, double board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology, has a special interest in breast cancer and gynecological malignancies, as well as extensive training in palliative care. She received her medical degree from the Gandhi Medical College in India and completed her residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Odessa, Texas. Panati was drawn to Corpus Christi because of the friendly, welcoming people and felt the Coastal Bend would be a good place for her and her husband to raise their children. She joined CPG in 2016 and is grateful for the opportunities and support CHRISTUS offers both doctors and patients. “Our Cancer Center has a great team,” she said. “It’s enabled me to go the extra mile to help my patients. We also have been involved in research, which gives us the chance to be a part of new advancements in the oncology field.”

revolutionary new medical procedure was performed for the first time in the Coastal Bend, as cardiologists and electrophysiologists implanted the first WATCHMAN device on a patient with atrial fibrillation (Afib) at the CHRISTUS Spohn Heart Institute. The breakthrough WATCHMAN procedure gives quality of life back to patients who live with Afib, offering an alternative to the lifelong use of Warfarin, a prescription medication used to prevent blood clots. The multidisciplinary team performed the procedure in the Dan A. Hughes Family Hybrid Surgical Suite at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Shoreline, an ultramodern setting for the first procedure of its kind in South Texas. “We are extremely proud of our talented cardiac team at the CHRISTUS Spohn Heart Institute who performed this procedure, which includes cardiologists, Dr. Travis Taylor, Dr. Shamim Badruddin-Mawji and electrophysiologist, Dr. Ramesh Hariharan, who are elevating the level of high-quality heart care right here in the Coastal Bend,” said Dr.

THIS PROCEDURE IS A GAME-CHANGER FOR PATIENTS LIVING WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION.”

Osbert Blow, president and chief medical officer for CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. “This procedure is a game-changer for patients living with atrial fibrillation, and offers better quality of life and less risk for stroke.” An estimated five million Americans are affected by Afib – an irregular heartbeat that feels like a quivering heart. People with Afib have a five-times greater risk of stroke than those with normal heart rhythms. The WATCHMAN device is a tiny implant that closes off an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage (LAA) to keep harmful blood clots from entering the blood stream and potentially causing a stroke. By closing off the LAA, the risk of stroke is reduced, and over time, patients may be able to stop taking Warfarin all together. “Patients with atrial fibrillation are at a much greater risk for stroke, which can have serious life and health consequences for themselves and their families,” said Dr. Travis Taylor, one of the cardiologists who performed the revolutionary procedure at CHRISTUS Spohn. “The WATCHMAN device offers our patients a potentially life-changing treatment option, which can eliminate the challenges of long-term Warfarin therapy or other blood thinners.”

The WATCHMAN device has been implanted in more than 50,000 patients worldwide and is a one-time procedure. It is a permanent device that doesn’t have to be replaced and can’t be seen outside the body. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. Patients commonly stay in the hospital overnight and leave the next day. After the historic procedure, the WATCHMAN team gathered for photos outside of the surgical suite, marking the breakthrough occasion, which offers cardiac patients in the Coastal Bend new options for a longer and fuller life.

HRISTUS Spohn clinicians and associates, elected officials and community leaders gathered to celebrate the opening of the new North Tower at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital-Shoreline with a ribbon-cutting event and a special mass officiated by Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey inside of the tower’s beautiful new chapel. MENTAL HEALTH

FINDING AN EVEN KEEL What you need to know about bipolar disorder By: DR. JOHN O. LUSINS III

There are three classifications of bipolar disorder: •

Bipolar I: Bipolar I causes dramatic mood swings with periods of normal mood between manic and depressed episodes. In most cases, Bipolar I is diagnosed during a manic episode when your behavior becomes extreme or dangerous. Manic episodes typically last a week or more, while your emotions are aroused and you feel highly energized or irritable. Bipolar II: Bipolar II also involves extreme mood swings, but is typically diagnosed during a depressive episode. Bipolar II’s high episodes are typically classified as hypomanic. They’re less extreme and only last for a few days. Most people who have Bipolar II also have periods of normal mood between swings. Cyclothymic disorder: Cyclothymic disorder is a less extreme form of bipolar disorder. The mood swings are more frequent, but much less extreme in their highs and lows. Typically for diagnosis, you’ll have experienced mood swings for two years, but your symptoms aren’t severe enough to meet the criteria for manic, hypomanic or depressive episodes.

What are symptoms of bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder symptoms are classified as either manic/ hypomanic or depressive. Manic/hypomanic symptoms include: • • • • • •

High energy Less need for sleep Exaggerated self-esteem Poor concentration Racing thoughts Impulsive behaviors

Depressive symptoms include: • • • • • • •

Feelings of sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities Weight changes Changes to sleep habits (either oversleeping or insomnia) Fatigue Indecisiveness Suicidal thoughts

BIPOLAR DISORDER IS CHARACTERIZED BY SEVERE MOOD SWINGS FROM EXTREME EMOTIONAL HIGHS AND LOWS.

In most cases, bipolar disorder is treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. At South Texas Mental Health Associates, the team of doctors and nurse practitioners offers customized treatments to address your specific needs. Bipolar disorder is often treated medicinally with mood stabilizers to even out your mood swings. By keeping your emotions on an even keel, you can focus your energies on therapy to better understand your illness and work on addressing any other issues that contribute to or trigger your swings. Call to schedule a consultation today if you’re concerned about bipolar disorder.

ormerly known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by severe mood swings from extreme emotional highs and lows. In general, if you have bipolar disorder, you’ll experience periods of normal moods, too. Both the manic and depressed periods cause disruption to your life.

WHICH LIFE ARE YOU DESIGNING? Making a case for functional longevity By: LISA WRIGHT

T

ake a look at these two ladies. They both have quantity, but only one has a high quality of life. What makes the difference between the two? How does one person end up in the nursing home, while another ends up fit and healthy, living in her own home? How is it that a 79-year-old woman – *Harriet Anderson – can run in the IRONMAN Triathlon? How is it that a man like **Banana George Blair can still waterski at the age of 98? NLW2D Let me ask you a few more questions. What types of things do you need to do in your life right now and that you will need to be able to keep doing as you get older? Things like working, taking care of yourself, walking, etc. What types of things do you like to do in your life right now and that you would like to continue doing as you get older? Things like walking with your spouse, playing golf, hiking, gardening, etc. What types of things do you want to do? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do, but never could because you were too busy raising a family or building your career, or you didn’t have the money? Something you used to enjoy doing, but have given up because you’ve gotten older? Think about it: What do you aspire to do in this, the best stage of your life? Maybe you want to travel to the Galapagos Islands like JoAnn Bloodgood, an 80-year-old female with Parkinson’s disease (early stage). Her husband had

36

I N S P I R E C O A S TA L B E N D M A G . C O M

the opportunity to visit the Galapagos Islands, and so, of course, she wanted to go with him. However, she needed to be able to walk a mile outdoors, not on overly rugged terrain, but not on paved sidewalks, either, and she couldn’t do that. Or maybe, like Dr. Tom Summers, you want to hike the 20,000foot peak Kilimanjaro in Africa. Summers enjoyed an amazing summit experience with his daughter – in his late 50s. How do we ensure that we will be functional for the long haul? How can we maintain our ability to do what we need to do, want to do and would like to do as late in life as possible? QUALITY + QUANTITY = FUNCTIONAL LONGEVITY There are three aging paradigm shifts that I would like to share with you over the next couple of publications to help you first understand how possible it is to be healthy, robust, energetic, vibrant and functional well into your 80s, 90s and even 100s. You need to have the right mindset before you can truly understand. TOP: BANANA GEORGE BLAIR WENT WATERSKIING AT AGE 98

1. Aging isn’t the bad guy ON JAN. 22, 2013. People blame the aging process BOTTOM: HARRIET ANDERSON, 79, IS THE OLDEST FEMALE TO for a lot of negative things that have FINISH THE IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. occurred to them as they’ve gotten older. Some are true – things like reduced visual acuity, poor hearing, wrinkles and gray hair. Most are not true, though. Primary aging is what we also call biological aging. It is the aging process common to all living creatures, referred to as senescence. Every living creature is born, matures, peaks, declines and then dies. It is the inevitable cycle of life that does not stop.

MOST OF THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE AGING PROCESS ARE DUE TO YOUR LIFESTYLE, NOT YOUR BIOLOGICAL AGE. Secondary aging is what we also call lifestyle aging. It is the aging process that is secondary to our lifestyle choices – nutrition, physical activity, stress, environment, etc. Extensive studies of astronauts and master’s athletes have made it very clear that most of the negative aspects associated with the aging process are due to secondary and not primary aging. Let me say that again. Poor health, chronic disease, functional decline, poor strength, falls, lagging libido, fatigue, I could go on, are mostly due to your lifestyle rather than your biological age. The problem is not that you are 60 or 70 or 80. The problem is that for 30, 40 or 50 years, you’ve been less active than you needed to be. You’ve chosen foods and meals that just weren’t healthy enough. Fifty years of eating ice cream while sitting on the couch watching TV adds up. It is called the accumulation effect. The great thing is that aging can be a healthy, rewarding experience. I invite you to start thinking about the amazing possibilities of life as we get older. Let’s continue this conversation.

GET MOVING!

Why is physical activity so important for health and well-being?

W

By: ERIN WILDER

e know that staying active is one of the best ways to keep our bodies healthy. But did you know it can also improve your overall well-being and quality of life? Here are just a few of the ways physical activity can help you feel better, look better and live better. Because, why not?

It’s a natural mood lifter Regular physical activity can relieve stress, anxiety, depression and anger. You know that “feel-good sensation” you get after doing something physical? Think of it as a happy pill with no side effects! Most people notice they feel better over time as physical activity becomes a regular part of their lives.

It helps keep the doctor away Stand up when you eat your apple a day! Too much sitting and other sedentary activity can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. One study showed that adults who watch more than four hours of television a day had an 80 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Being more active can help you:  Lower your blood pressure  Boost your levels of good cholesterol  Improve blood flow (circulation)  Keep your weight under control  Prevent bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis All of this can add up to fewer medical expenses, interventions and medications later in life! It can help you live longer It’s true: 70 is the new 60 – but only if you’re healthy. People who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese. And the important part is that those extra years are generally healthier years! Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging. So active adults maintain their quality of life and independence longer as they age.

REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN RELIEVE STRESS, ANXIETY, DEPRESSION AND ANGER. Here are some other benefits you may get with regular physical activity:  Helps you quit smoking and stay tobacco-free  Boosts your energy level so you can get more done  Helps you manage stress and tension  Promotes a positive attitude and outlook  Helps you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly  Improves your self-image and self-confidence  Provides fun ways to spend time with family, friends and pets  Helps you spend more time outdoors or in your community The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, five days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal. So this is easy! Just move more, with more intensity, and sit less. You don’t have to make big life changes to see the benefits. Just start building more activity into your day, one step at a time.

For more information, visit the American Heart Association online at www.heart.org.

It keeps you physically fit and able Without regular activity, your body slowly loses its strength, stamina and ability to function properly. It’s like the old saying: You don’t stop moving from growing old; you grow old from stopping moving. Exercise increases muscle strength, which, in turn, increases your ability to do other physical activities.
