FILMING BROWN BEARS IN ALASKA How business can be an adventure By: CONNIE LAUGHLIN

entific deer breeders were busy doing what they do. Booking and videoing these incredible hunting and fishing adventures and getting paid for it was literally beyond my wildest imagination! Leave the administration to others! In any business, you’re sure to find yourself so busy finishing current projects and drumming up new jobs that you aren’t appropriately handling the finite details of running a business with respect to employee administration. Most business owners aren’t adequately trained to oversee human resources (HR) without putting their business at risk. Do consider outsourcing your HR solution to increase production and protect your business. Camera crews, editing pros and extra hands need more than a script – they need to know the rules and regulations of a business. They need to know they’re employed by a business that cares enough to provide this support, plus benefits – a professional company! Fully formed HR departments in small- to medium-sized organizations aren’t realistic. First off, if you plan to hire a HR pro who’s certified, are you ready to pay six figures? There’s an alternative: It’s a professional employer organization (PEO). Seriously, who can keep up with new worksite employee laws, employee risk and claims management and safety training when you just want to get your employees paid? Overseeing the administrative duties for employees is time-consuming, even though you’re probably outsourcing payroll to one place, workers’ compensation to your agent, safety to yet another vender and so it goes. You might feel rather drawn-out dealing with various venders, especially when you just booked your next job to video a brown bear hunting concession, and you’re on the road again.

Connie Laughlin is a business consultant for UniqueHR. For more information on outsourcing your human resources, you may contact her at 361-852-6392 or conniel@uniquehr.com.

DO THE THINGS YOU WENT INTO BUSINESS TO DO!

ANDREANITA/ISTOCKPHOTO

DO THE THINGS you went into business to do! This is one I never regretted. Fifteen years ago, during a lull between corporate careers, I was a partner in a video production and outdoor-adventure consulting agency. Brought in for my marketing skills alone, I knew nothing about video production or hunting when I started this new venture. I found myself on a crash course learning about various trophy animals and worldwide hunting and fishing adventures, visiting lodges and meeting guides, along with the fine art of video production. A sixmonth agreement turned into a couple years of incredible excursions. While marketing this business, I couldn’t help but learn simple ins and outs of videography. I wrote a functional script for each production, performed some camera work and editing and even a bit of voiceover. I designed a monthly newsletter featuring specially priced fishing and hunting deals from all over the globe that we were booking, I placed a video fishing guide series in Academy and I traveled! I never dreamed I’d be flying around the remote bush of Alaska in a float plane, fly-fishing spawning salmon, stalking coastal brown bears, or south of the border on bird hunts, getting aerial footage out of a powerchute, plus many other wild outdoor experiences. One interesting first for me was visiting “Highroller,” a world-class whitetail living on an Amish farm in Ohio. I was in a mobile vet clinic, standing over the gurney holding this tranquilized 386 B&C buck as the guys from Texas Trophy Hunters were at one end scoring him, while at the other end, sci-

STELLAR ENERGY SOLUTIONS IS A DIFFERENT WORLD. EMPLOYEES ARE NOT JUST NUMBERS OR MACHINES.”

C

old winter months, supply and demand are just a few of the many factors that drive the volatile energy market in Texas, a deregulated state since 2002. With deregulation of energy, consumers have the right to choose competitive rates, innovative products and their retail energy providers. That power to choose is critical, and so is the knowledge to make the best choice for your business or residence – a great reason to turn to a reputable energy broker who can help you save money and protect your business or home. That said, Stellar Energy Solutions is proud to spotlight Ricardo Villanueva, one of the first business development consultants to join Stellar Energy’s branch office in Weslaco, Texas. A native of McAllen, Texas, Villanueva worked in the automotive industry for 25 years and did some part-time work for another energy company before he was hired. He says when he first heard one of his coworkers mention what “a blessing it is to work at Stellar,” he was somewhat skeptical. One year into this new career, Villanueva says, “Now I really

think I’ve been blessed! I am excited about Stellar.” He happily shares that he has learned more in this one year than in his previous life work. “It’s a different world. The system, the way Tim takes care of his people and his company, is just a different world. The employees are not just a number or a machine expected to produce.” He continues: “And you aren’t just a salesperson. You build relationships with your clients. Business owners are human, too. They may be down sometime, and you can come in and give them an uplifting word.” Villanueva is the embodiment of the old adage, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” He says he would love to “stay at Stellar another 20 years.” Tim Clark, president, couldn’t be happier about that prospect. “One thing I have noticed about Ricardo Villanueva is his dedication to his career, self and family,” Clark says. “He is very honorable – a big quality I appreciate about Rick. He always strives to provide quality service.” Stellar Energy Solutions: Integrity. Choice. Service.

FEATURE The staffing industry is always hiring. Gone are the days of “Kelly Girls.” Today’s staffing workforce includes jobs in not only office-clerical and administrative, manual labor and industrial, but also many professional positions in:

WIN-WIN

Is the staffing industry the workforce of the future? By: LINDA JORDAN

     

Engineering Information technology Computer programming Health care Accounting Marketing

Businesses are turning to staffing companies to access talent quickly, offering them the opportunity of a flexible workforce ready when their needs arise. Likewise, when special projects are over or their work slows, they have the ability to cut back their workforce, thus saving money and controlling costs. As well, it offers them the opportunity to review the work of employees and retain the more talented individuals who have the desired traits they are looking for. More than 50 percent of the job listings with staffing companies are “temp-to-hire” where the client company’s intent is to interview and select candidates for a specific job and keep them on the payroll of the staffing company during a probationary period. Nearly 60 percent of those referrals are retained as permanent employees. Many staffing companies offer benefits, including health insurance, paid holidays, direct deposit and referral bonuses. Research shows that many times, temporary employment is a great way to find a permanent job. The experience gained in temporary jobs often makes job seekers more employable and offers them the opportunity to gain additional skills, try new jobs and explore new industries. It is also a way to get a paycheck while you continue looking. The advantages of a staffing firm are numerous for both businesses and employees. So, Mr. Businessman, if you are tired of searching the job boards and want to get back to your own job of making money for your company, call a staffing specialist. And to the job seeker who wants a variety of opportunities and quick placement, call your friendly staffing specialist. It’s a “win-win” proposition.

O

ne of the best reasons to turn to a staffing company is to take advantage of their connection to available jobs and the ability to find work when and where you want it. It is not only the younger generation that is looking for flexibility in hours so they can complete their education and raise their young families. The aging workforce is just as likely to want to take time off between assignments for long-awaited vacations before they are ready for retirement.

L.K. Jordan & Associates has offices in Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. We offer both temporary and professional placement assistance. Call 361-814-9700 to be directed to a staffing specialist in any of those areas, or visit our website at www.lkjordan.com.

PAIN IN THE NECK

Is your high-tech environment giving you “tech neck”? By: SYLVIA SLEZAK

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?       

Ensure that your computer equipment is set up properly. Modify the workflow as needed to prevent postural strain. Look away from the screen often, every five to 10 minutes or so. Get out of your chair every hour for a two-minute stretch or walk-about. Hold your smart phone at eye level. Ditch your smart phone at times to take care of your body. Do some easy neck stretches and exercises.

THREE EASY NECK STRETCHES 1. Chin tuck: Move your chin toward your chest, hold for five seconds, feeling the stretch from your neck to the base of your skull. Repeat 10 times. 2. Side bending: Tilt your head to the right, bring your ear close to your shoulder and hold for 20 seconds. Use your hand to pull your head farther into the stretch if necessary. Move your head back to the center, then tilt it to the left and hold for 20 seconds. Repeat five times on each side. 3. Side-to-side head rotation: Rotate your chin toward your right shoulder

and hold for 20 seconds. Move your head to the center, then rotate it to the left and hold for 20 seconds. Repeat five times on each side.

ASIDE FROM NECK PAIN RELIEF, REGULAR MASSAGE THERAPY CAN ALSO HELP IMPROVE POSTURE AND FLEXIBILITY.

Neck pain can make your daily life difficult, but regular massage therapy can help you manage and relieve the pain and stiffness in your neck. Massage therapy has been a long-used, non-invasive treatment in treating pain, tension and stress, and is beneficial for everyone, irrespective of age and gender. Aside from neck pain relief, receiving massage therapy regularly can also help improve your posture and flexibility, reduce blood pressure, increase your range of motion, promote relaxation and relieve stress. FOUR POPULAR TYPES OF MASSAGES 1. Swedish massage is the most popular and well-known massage modality in the United States. It is typically a full-body massage treatment where the therapist uses a free-flowing and gliding movement with light or medium constant pressure, along with kneading and pressure on specific muscle groups. Benefits include reducing stress and fatigue while im-

e live in a constantly connected, high-tech world where being tethered to your smart phone can be a pain in the neck, literally and figuratively. Are your shoulders hunched forward, neck straining at an uncomfortable angle, squinting at the screen, thumbs a blur as you type? This is a posture most often associated with smart phones, and it’s being called “tech neck.” The oddly angled neck and rounded shoulders strain the entire upper body, with poor posture leading to a great deal of neck pain. But smart phones aren’t the only neck-pain-causing culprits. Working at a computer for long periods is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions reported, usually caused by a combination of postural strain, desk and monitor setup, seating and stress.

proving circulation and joint flexibility. 2. Deep tissue massage, commonly misunderstood, gets the assumption that it means deep pressure. Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue focuses on stretching a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports all the muscles, bones and organs. In about three days, this deep tissue work creates micro-tears in the fascia, which fill with elastic and collagen, creating muscles that are more flexible and supple, and have a greater range of motion. 3. Shiatsu massage applies gentle stretching techniques over a wider area of the body to integrate the point work and encourage the flow of Chi (energy) throughout the body. It is a meditative healing art that honors the body, mind and spirit. The word, Shiatsu, means “finger pressure,” and the theory underlying it is the same as acupuncture. Shiatsu provides relief from headaches and a wide variety of aches and pains, along with relief from stress and anxiety. 4. Sports massage is broken down into three events: the pre, the post and the rehabilitation/ maintenance. The pre-event is a stimulating massage generally performed within one hour of a sporting event, whose purpose is to get you game ready. The post-event massage is targeted to help recover from a high-intensity exercise, competition or training session, and is given anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours after the competition or activity, utilizing techniques and stretching to enhance circulation, calm muscles and aid in faster recovery. The rehabilitation/maintenance massage, typically done on a “rest” day in clinic, targets recovery between training or events, assessment and treatment of injuries, keeping muscles flexible and relief of tender areas. Through our search, we have found that a therapeutic massage can stimulate the release of hormones that produce the state and feeling of well-being; that people who receive regular massages are actually helping boost their immunity; and that the application of certain massage techniques can aid in the proper elimination of the body’s waste products. You owe it to yourself to take care of your body before, during and after that pain in the neck. Don’t wait until you get all bent out of shape to reap the benefits of massage therapy. Search on CityOf.com/CorpusChristi to find local businesses offering these services.

The coming of spring also means it’s time for the Easter Bunny to hop into La Palmera. Easter is April 1 this year, and the Easter Bunny is available for photos each day in Center Court through Saturday, March 31, during regular mall hours. As an extra celebration, La Palmera will also host a special breakfast party on Tuesday, March 6, to welcome the Easter Bunny as part of the monthly Tide Turners Kids Club event for kids 5 and under. Held in Center Court from 10 a.m. until noon, the event is free and includes arts and crafts, games, snacks and more. The Easter Bunny will meet and greet party guests to kick off the event and then hop back to his traditional garden spot in Center Court for photos. Although La Palmera is always the place to find the latest styles and accessories for spring, it’s also the perfect choice for shoppers needing to fill Easter baskets, including Hallmark for cards and

CREATING SOLUTIONS

Snyder & Associates delivers quality creative communications services to clients across the Coastal Bend. By: KELLY TREVINO

I

n business for 30 years, Snyder & Associates is an award-winning, full-service marketing and advertising firm, dedicated to building each client’s brand and business through innovative creative communications. A BBB-accredited business on the cutting edge of technology, media trends and solutions, owner Brad Snyder is proud to deliver personal, individualized service. Snyder was exposed to the concept of entrepreneurship and diligence at an early age. His family owned a dry-cleaning business in Corpus Christi. However, he was drawn to photography, graphics and the creative arts in elementary school. Just out of college, Snyder began taking pictures for the Junior League and Texas State Aquarium. He found himself captivated and enchanted by photography, and discovered artistic forms had the ability to cross cultural and demographic boundaries to communicate creatively with people. Snyder believes the power of education – in many forms – is extraordinary and essential. As an active member of the American Advertising Federation, he continues

to learn through their conferences and continuing education programs. “Today, creative communications have evolved across many mediums and platforms. The business has changed in an amazing way. We have more opportunities and methods than ever before to engage people. Our clients benefit from that evolution, and it’s very rewarding to be part of that process. Snyder & Associates understands the same solutions don’t fit every client. With customers from international convenience retailer 7-Eleven to health care, tourism and regional retail businesses, Snyder & Associates believes that business, no matter how large or small, deserves quality marketing. In an effort to create customized solutions that are result focused, Snyder encourages getting to know each client individually. Some clients have been with Snyder & Associates for more than 20 years, and as their needs change, new and creative marketing solutions are created to help them adapt. The company is deeply committed to the community and devotes part of their time and resources to pro-bono work for nonprofits in the Coastal Bend. With a history of hard work, in-

tegrity and transparency, BBB accreditation is important to Snyder & Associates. “I identify strongly with the credibility and prestige of BBB,” Snyder says. “It’s an honor to be associated with and accredited by the Better Business Bureau. BBB has a 100-plus-year history with the advertising industry, so BBB’s Standards for Trust have a particular resonance with me in my profession.” He goes on to say that with such a wide range of unfiltered sales-related communications flooding the marketplace, BBB accreditation brings an impartial vetting and validation, and provides a higher level of consumer confidence when selecting a service, product or vendor. Becoming accredited allows you to take full advantage of the BBB’s resources, and sends a strong message to your employees,

SNYDER BELIEVES THE POWER OF EDUCATION IS EXTRAORDINARY AND ESSENTIAL. customers and colleagues about the legitimacy of your company and your commitment to sound business practices, professional integrity and ethics. With the marketing landscape evolving rapidly, Snyder promises his company won’t forget to enjoy the process as they continue to grow and change with knowledge and technology. “After all, there’s very little benefit in owning your company and investing your time if it isn’t any fun at all.”

actually got into this business by accident,” says Linda Jordan, CEO and founder of L.K. Jordan & Associates. Thirty-five years ago, she began her career in the recruiting industry when she accepted a position with a Corpus Christi firm that promised to train her to be a recruiter. “It was a husband-and-wife team that had a good training program,” she recalls. She had studied library science at Texas Woman’s University, but found that she did not want to pursue that career. Even though the company later closed its doors, she gained a solid understanding of the business and had a following of clients that allowed her to continue in the career she loved. In 1989,

already successful L.K. Jordan & Associates is poised for even bigger and better things.

Linda made the decision to build her own company in Corpus Christi, even though she knew it would be challenging as a single mother. Twenty-eight successful years later, she’s still in awe. “I honestly didn’t envision things taking off like they did,” she says. “Sure, there have been rocky times along the way. I didn’t take a paycheck for the first year.” In 1992, she started a small branch in Houston, only to close it after one year. “We were undercapitalized and did not have a reputation in the city.” But three years later, when Austin was booming, she decided to try again. This time, it was a success. “We had our processes in place, a more tenured corporate staff and enough brand recognition in the business to grow organically.” Linda’s daughter, Leslie, became interested in the business early on. When she was in high school, she would help out in the office after school and during summers. “Instead of hanging out at the beach with my friends, I wanted to learn the ins and outs of the business, so I started by answering phones and collecting timesheets.” Leslie officially joined L.K. Jordan after graduating from University of Illinois in Chicago with a degree in business management and a minor in entrepreneurship. She opened the Houston branch in 1999, and then the San Antonio branch a few years later. “Leslie was my best hire,” Linda says. “She was a natural at the operations side of the business, and was named vice president of operations a few years after she started.” Her strength in training, software implementation and team building, as well as setting up standardized policies and procedures, helped bring them into the 21st century. “I can’t think of anything I would rather do,” Leslie comments. “I get to work with some of the best people in our industry. I am so proud of the teams we have built. Our people rely on each other to be successful, and we all pull together to keep each other motivated. Everyone holds themselves to a higher standard, and it is because of that we are successful.” “Our greatest asset is our team,” Linda says. “We jokingly say our motto is, ‘We hire the best and place the rest.’ Our team members are all handpicked and

homegrown. Most of the time, we select people who have the natural drive and energy necessary for success in this industry and teach them the business.” L.K. Jordan & Associates keep their teammates happy and productive by providing incentive bonuses, employee retreats, annual award trips, birthday celebrations and Happy Half Hour on Fridays. Benefits such as these keep everyone energized and happy to provide the kind of service L.K. Jordan is known for. These incentives clearly work because their retention rate is very low for a high-turnover business; about 20 percent of their employees boast 10 or more years of service. In fact, their receptionist, Pat, has been there for an incredible 28 years. The culture is one of healthy competition and rivalry between the branches, yet each team member knows that they are all successful because of their collaborative and caring approach to the business. They have an inspiring employee-driven program called “Jeans for Means,” which allows the company to give back to their local communities. Over the previous three years, L.K. Jordan team members have donated more than $30,000 to nonprofit charities in their cities. In 2017, Linda made the announcement that she was moving into the CEO position and Leslie was to be the new L.K. Jordan president. Laughingly, Linda says, “I’m not calling it ‘retirement’; I’m calling it ‘preferment.’ I’ll work when I prefer.” She continues to oversee certain clients and manage the financial side of the business, and plans to stay involved for the next few years to make sure of a successful transition. “Leslie is a natural leader, and she knows the staffing industry from the inside out. She will take good care of our wonderful clients and our many dedicated employees. I’m very fortunate to have a daughter who is not only talented in business, but who is also happy and excited about taking this company to the next level,” Linda says. “And as for me, I have the best of both worlds. I am in the position of being able to remain involved when I prefer, and know the leadership is in place for bigger and better times ahead.” With this dynamic mother-daughter duo, L.K. Jordan is indeed set to have a bright future.

he United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation is proud to announce the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association Parade of Homes as the new presenting sponsor of Lemonade Day Coastal Bend, set to take place for the sixth consecutive year on Saturday, May 12, 2018. The Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3) supporting organization of the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, strives to develop and empower leaders and entrepreneurs to make a positive impact in Corpus Christi. The Coastal Bend Home Builders Association is a nonprofit association of professionals committed to the homebuilding industry and affiliated with the Texas Association of Builders and the National Association of Home Builders. They are a unified voice and resource that provides education to their members and the community, and promotes the value and benefits of new home construction. Lemonade Day is a nationwide educational initiative that introduces youth to entrepreneurship, teaching them how to start, own and operate their own business – through the hands-on experience of running a lemonade stand on May 12. Youth set goals, create plans and work their plans to achieve success. They earn real money and use 100 percent of their profit to spend, save and share based on their goals. Along the way, youth build self-esteem and new mindsets that can propel them to success they may have not pursued otherwise. “We are excited to be part of such an outstanding event,” said Wendy Herman, executive director for the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association. “The builders and associate members of our association are all entrepreneurs. We really hope to inspire young people to consider careers in the construction industry by showing them that owning their own business can make all their financial dreams come true.” The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to help today’s youth become the business leaders, social advocates, community volunteers and forward-thinking citizens of tomorrow. “The support of the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association, and other community partners, ensures thousands of children in our community access to the Lemonade Day Program,” said Yvette Lara, executive director for the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation. “Children who participate in Lemonade Day are offered a unique opportunity to literally change the trajectories of their young lives. We are thrilled to partner with the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association as we take this established community program to the next level.” Lemonade Day participant registration will be available online and at various business locations in the late spring. To stay up-to-date on the events and opportunities available for young entrepreneurs of the Coastal Bend, follow Lemonade Day Coastal Bend on Facebook.

Lexology and Better Business Bureau (BBB) have the following tips to avoid security breaches from these phishing scams:  Alert your workforce to this scam.  Direct employees to forward any suspicious requests to the information technology or human resources departments, rather than replying to the email.  Instruct employees to refrain from supplying log-in credentials or personally identifying information in response to any email.  Ensure that log-in credentials used for payroll purposes differ from those used for other purposes, such as employee surveys.

cam artists are always looking for new wrinkles to throw off the scent of potential victims, even the most informed ones, and this new scheme targeting employees’ paychecks is no different. According to a report by Lexology, there is a new form of phishing scam taking aim directly at victims’ wallets, as in, targeting their direct deposit information. The phishing attempt starts off like many other scams of this type: An employee receives an email from an email that mimics a trusted source. The email asks the employee to click on a link, visit a website or answer a survey. Then, it directs the employee to “confirm” his or her identity by providing his or her log-in credentials. Skeptical employees who reply to the email are given a quick response verifying the employee should complete the steps contained in the email. The scam artists then use the employee’s log-in credentials to access payroll portals, reroute direct deposits to other accounts and wreak other havoc upon the employer’s network. In some versions of the scam, hackers access employee emails to request a password change from the employer’s payroll service, and then use the new login credentials to change direct deposit instructions. REAL ESTATE

ADAPTATION

Update: changes and challenges in the area real estate market

O

ur region has certainly seen some big changes since last summer, and it’s remarkable to see how some areas drastically affected by Hurricane Harvey are recovering at amazing rates. The following data were presented by the Texas REALTOR Data Relevance Project, which is a partnership among the Texas Association of REALTORS and local REALTOR associations throughout the state. Analysis of these data is provided through a research agreement with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Please keep in mind that this data is collected and analyzed from Multiple Listing Services (MLS), and does not include unreported data (which commonly includes for-sale-by-owner transactions without a REALTOR and some new construction). All reported data is a comparison of January 2018 to January 2017, which is the most current data at the time of press. With the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, the Port Aransas market has been severely impacted, but not as much as one might think. Comparing

January 2018 sales data to January 2017 sales data, there is only a reduction of 12.5 percent in the total number of closed transactions. However, median prices are dramatically reduced at $220,750 (down 33.6 percent since January 2017), and the active number of listings is also down 38.9 percent. It will be wonderful to see these sales statistics continue to improve as so many people rebuild their homes, businesses and lives. Overall, the city of Corpus Christi’s market has seen an increase in activity as we have entered the New Year. Comparing January 2018 to January 2017, the number of closed transactions is up 15.4 percent, with a total of 217 reported closings. However, the median price of homes is down slightly at $184,823, and the active number of listings is down 6.6 percent. I have had a lot of people inquiring about the Flour Bluff and Island (Padre Island-Corpus Christi city limits) sales. When isolating the 78418 zip code, there are some noticeable differences from the overall city of Corpus Christi. In 78418, the median price of homes is down 10.8 percent at

OUR REGION HAS CERTAINLY SEEN SOME BIG CHANGES SINCE LAST SUMMER.

$206,950. The active number of listings is also down 14.9 percent, but the gross number of closed sales is up substantially at 31.4 percent this January compared to January 2017. Portland continues to be in a very unique position compared to much of the Coastal Bend. In January, the median price was down 5.7 percent compared to January 2017 at $174,500. The number of active listings is down 10.3 percent, and the total number of closed sales is down 18.8 percent, with only 13 closed transactions reported in January 2018. Interestingly, for those transactions that did successfully close, there were fewer days on market (DOM) reported for Portland than the other areas observed. These Portland sales reported were only on the market for an average of 99 days from listing to closing (average of 66 days from listing to contract, and 33 additional days from contract to closing). It will be interesting to see how our real estate market continues to adjust as our communities adapt to some major changes and challenges. If you would like specific data for your community or area, please feel free to contact me anytime.

to show our appreciation of place than to continue to create connections and welcome visitors to explore our abundant shores? Using the breathtakingly welcoming horizon of the Coastal Bend as inspiration, the South Central branch of International Student Exchange (ISE) invites local families and individuals to open our homes to new perspectives. ISE is a nonprofit dedicated to bridging the gap between cultures by placing international students who have dreams of studying in the United States with local volunteer families. Hosting is an opportunity for families and communities to open their arms to fresh perspectives about the rest of the world, while sharing our day-to-day experiences with a student from another country. One of the beauties of diversity is that it adds to the rich layers that define a group of people. The Coastal Bend community is the perfect place to introduce a student who is hoping to thrive while in the United States. You need only a few things to help the dream of an international teen come true. The most important thing is that you are eager and willing to embrace learning about a new culture. The next is that you can create a positive space for living and studying: a bed to sleep in and a peaceful place to study. After passing a background check (just like each international student must), you can select a student or two to join your family for their year of study abroad. All of our students have everything they need to be safe and enjoy their experience abroad: full health insurance, spending money, English proficiency and the ISE team to help them with anything they might need. All that’s missing is a positive environment where they may thrive and feel comfortable to study and learn about daily life in America. That’s why we need volunteer host families who love where they live, want to share their home and are open to embracing different cultures. ISE encourages hosts to show their local pride by taking students to local events or activities – a local “American” sports game, for example! This is why we started our bi-weekly language exchange encouraging locals to dive into cultural conversations and internationally inspired topics. What does it mean to be an American? What defines our community in this “Heart of Texas”? Hablas espanol? From practicing a language to engaging in these cultural conversations, the opportunities for growth toward a more global community are endless. Not only is the culture exchange educational, but it is also fantastically entertaining. There have been traditional Irish music performances and dancers by Irish Trad Sessions, Gildea School of Music, and The Olde Dogs, Samba lessons by Brazilian Capoeria of Corpus Christi and sushi tastings from local restaurant, Aka Sushi. ISE hopes to bring to the forefront the cultural side of our community while also encouraging us to open our minds and homes to more diversity. It’s time to get internationally inspired, and to add to the unique mixing pot of the people we call our neighbors. You can make an impact in the world by sharing this information, attending a culture exchange or hosting an international student. We hope to hear from you soon!

magine during your commute to work one day, as you are fumbling through radio stations and thinking about what’s on your agenda, you notice a child playing along train tracks. Now, there is not a train in sight and the child does not appear to be in any danger, so you don’t think twice about it. You go about your day, and on your way home from work, you notice a police scene at those same train tracks and you think about the child you saw earlier. As you tell yourself the two cannot be related, when you arrive home and watch the news later that evening, you come to find out that, indeed, the child you saw that morning was in an accident involving a train. You think about what might have happened if you had stopped when you passed him – could you have helped prevent the accident? While you are experiencing this, there are handfuls of others thinking the very same – what if they could have done something. There are hundreds of children standing on train tracks right here in Nueces County – train tracks that represent the danger of being or becoming victims of abuse and neglect. They are seen by many every day who may not see or chose not to see the harm these children face at the hands of people who should be protecting them. On average, Child Protective Services receives a call every half hour to report suspicion or knowledge of a child being abused or neglected. From those calls, last year, 2,947 investigations were completed within Nueces County alone. From those investigations, there were 1,244 confirmed victims of abuse and neglect. There is much meaning behind these numbers, which continue to rise year after year. People are more observant and helping move children from the “train tracks.” You may

to have experience with children, CPS, the court system or foster care – you will learn all that during the training sessions offered every other month. The best advocates are the ones who want to help children find the home that is right for them so they are healthy, happy and loved. Thanks to incredible individuals across Nueces, Aransas and San Patricio Counties, in 2017, more than 100 advocates served as voices for 343 children. With the growing number of children removed from their homes, there is a more urgent need than ever for volunteers to stand up for these children. Those who volunteer as a CASA are true superheroes. They possess the super powers of being dependable, relentless, unbiased, honest, thorough and compassionate. Every year, we promote their heroic spirits during our CASA Superhero 5K Run/Walk, held this year on May 5 at Heritage Park. Superheroes from all corners of the Coastal Bend unite in support of giving every child a chance. Runners, walkers and bystanders dress up as their favorite costumed crime fighters while celebrating the everyday heroes who fight for a better future for children in foster care. Local businesses hand out goodies and provide activities such as a warm-up yoga session with Crossroads Yoga, photo sessions with SnapBox photo booth, yummy treats from Corner Bakery and much more! A super-charged costume contest offers over $3,000 in prizes for children, teens, adults, groups and, new this year, pets! Judges for the Super Humans include KRIS6 News team – Jennifer Lira, Mike Gillaspia and Maclovio Perez – plus AJ in The Morning from The Beach 96.5 and Kris Tovar from My Home Team Media. Judges for the Super Pets include Nicholas Nilest, Scott Humpal and Paulette Guajardo. For more information about the CASA Superhero 5K and how you can participate, visit coastalbendcasa.org. Air out your superhero cape before the 5K by learning more about CASA and the rewards that come along with serving as the voice of a child. Attend a brief, non-committal information session to hear about the roles and requirements of a CASA volunteer. Information sessions are held at the CASA office every Wednesday at noon. CASA Of Nueces County, Inc. (Casa Of The Coastal Bend) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of trained, court-appointed volunteers who advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities.
