STEP BY STEP BRIDAL MAKE-UP

Bridal make-up By Solihull College students

Mother of the Bride

ith the wedding season well upon us, we spoke to the Students from Solihull College and University Centre studying Level 3 Fashion Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up Studies and asked them to create bridal hair and make-up looks to inspire this summer after all the cancellations during the lockdowns. They have created looks for a wedding guest, mother of the bride and finally a step-by-step bridal look. We think they have done a fabulous job and cannot wait to see what they bring to the world in the future.

STEP BY STEP

STEP 1

STEP 2

Before you begin applying your makeup, take the time to prep your skin with a high-quality moisturiser. This will ensure that the make-up goes onto the skin smoothly. Next apply a primer, primers are silky smooth gels and creams that fill in the lines and pores on your face, smoothing out uneven textures and creating the ideal canvas for your makeup.

Start from the centre of your face and blend a liquid foundation outward. As you sweep your foundation across the skin, buff it in with a damp sponge which will create a smoother, more even texture. Using a large, fluffy powder brush, begin by dusting a light coat of loose powder all over your face. It will help set the make-up and blur the look of fine lines and pores.

STEP 3

STEP 4

Bronzer can give your skin that sun-kissed glow all year long. Apply the bronzer when you would naturally catch the sun (forehead, nose, cheeks) follow with a small amount of blusher to the apples of the cheeks.

Use a brow pencil to fill in areas of sparseness with small, hair-like strokes.

STEP 5

STEP 6

Start with a natural eyeshadow shade, working it right across the eyelid. Gently work a light brown from the outer corner towards the middle of the eyelid. Use the shadow to line the lower lash line to define the eyes. Add a golden shimmer in the centre of the eyelid.

Apply a waterproof mascara, this will create volume and define the eyes. Apply a second coat for more volume. We finished by applying some strip lashes to add additional volume and make the eyes stand out.

STEP 7 Apply a nude lipliner to define the lips and prevent lipstick from bleeding. Apply lipstick, using a lip brush followed by lip gloss in the centre of the lips to help the lips appear fuller.

TIPS Test foundation colours on your jawline. After applying, if the foundation disappears without any sort of blending, you’ve found your perfect match.

Independent focus

Sophie Bea ophie Bea is one of the growing number of independent businesses that have decided to move into Solihull and call our amazing town centre home. Ran by Samantha Bushell – who has fashion running through her veins – the new Solihull clothing boutique on Drury Lane opened just before Christmas and is the company’s second brick and mortar store. The new go to spot for everything womenswear in Solihull town centre, selling stylish and quality separates, dresses and accessories, we spoke to Samantha to find out some more about Sophie Bea. BID: What was the inspiration behind starting the business? Samantha: Growing up in the fashion family firm, I always had a sharp eye for design and a knack of knowing what would sell. This led me to London’s most famous shopping destination - Bond Street - where I worked with Nicole Fahri who had a global reputation for subtle detailing and timeless womenswear designs. It’s something I’ve always loved, finding those really affordable but quality items. Those stand out key pieces that don’t cost an arm and leg but are still wonderfully made. BID: What made you choose Solihull as a destination and what’s the best thing about owning a business in the heart of Solihull? Samantha: I really love Solihull... it feels like a village. It’s so friendly and everyone seems to know everyone. Also, people here seem to love fashion! The ladies certainly know how to dress. I’ve already met so many stylish Silhillians. BID: What makes your business and offering unique? Samantha: I do tend to have an eye for finding really unique and quality pieces with very reasonable price tags. The wonderful thing about fashion nowadays is you really can mix and match well priced carefully selected items with your more designer led pieces. I spend a lot of time searching out those affordable, stylish pieces that are really well made and suit everyone. I always buy as if I’m buying for my family. I try and cater for everyone. BID: You seem to cater for all ages and tastes – how important is that to your business? Samantha: With the right design and detailing in good fabrics, clothes can be truly timeless. Although most of our customers are between say 25 and 70, we do have older ladies coming in too. Age is not a measurement of fashion! 14

I really love Solihull... it feels like a village.

The wonderful thing about fashion nowadays is you really can mix and match well priced carefully selected items with your more designer led pieces.

BID: Did you have any reservations about opening a new store as we continue to recover from the Covid pandemic? Samantha: Now life’s getting more back to normal, it’s the right time to open. We all need some new outfits to go out in, don’t we? And even if you don’t, pop in and have a coffee with us at Sophie Bea anyway as I’m so looking forward to getting to know more of the ladies of Solihull! BID: What are your summer wardrobe ‘must haves’? Samantha: Our collection in Solihull and Harborne, styles and current designer brands is getting larger by the day and consists of: Robell, Mama B, Frank Lyman, Joseph Ribkoff, Masai, Foil, Fransa, to name but a few and complemented with fashion jewellery, bags and accessories. So fresh and vibrant! BID: Do you have any exciting plans for the future of Sophie Bea? Samantha: To be honest, apart from maybe a little more focus with our online store www.sophiebea.co.uk, the future of Sophie Bea independent boutiques rests with the customer and with local support. We endeavour to continue to deliver a quality collection, a first class personal shopping experience and a relaxed atmosphere that the customer adopts and recommends as their boutique of choice. day out t is thought that UK households are estimated to have 12.5 million dogs, and well who can blame us, they are our best friends after all. It is also thought that pet owners in the UK spend roughly 10% of their annual income on their pets… Pup loving businesses have got a paw on the pulse of one of the largest growing global economies, us dog devoted Brits will regularly spend more on our pooches than a friend, and so why not spend more time out socialising with our faithful four-legged pals. In Solihull along with 3 great parks we also have an abundance of dog friendly venues, so it’s no surprise that we welcome hundreds of our fluffy friends to the town centre each year. We decided to test out Solihull and its claim of dog friendly venues with Solihull BID’s own Newshounds, Misty and Trixie and we weren’t disappointed with the response. After filling their bellies with numerous treats and lapping up the attention from everyone they met, we ended the day with two very happy pups. Not only can you go out to eat, but you can also shop, play in the park, do your banking and even stay at voco St Johns all with your dog in tow! Well behaved ‘doggos’ are welcome in the following businesses, with many offering water stations and treats for the best boys and girls. So come along, you know you’re ‘woof’ it.

Solihull Metro Bank’s

Barking Bankers! amous for being the dog friendly bank, Solihull Metro Bank are going the extra mile this year having partnered with Birmingham Dogs Home. As a community bank, Metro Bank has always welcomed dogs in store – four legged VIP visitors to their stores enjoy their own water bowl, special treats and even a branded bandana. Metro Bank stores across the West Midlands region – that’s Solihull, Birmingham, Merry Hill and Wolverhampton – are now sponsoring one of the dog kennels at the Birmingham Dogs Home. Metro Bank colleagues have pledged to fundraise and volunteer for the dogs throughout 2022 and the first rehoming event held in the Solihull Metro Bank store proved a great success with all the dogs who were showcased on the day now finding their forever homes except for “Wonky” Wendy. “Customers and colleagues loved having the dogs in store,” explains Solihull Metro Bank store manager, Dan Whild. “We are so glad that by giving Birmingham Dogs Home a high street profile for a day, we helped raise awareness about the important work they do

caring for dogs who need a new home. Resplendent in her very own pushchair Wendy was definitely the star of the show and a big hit with kids as she was at their eye level.” Wendy is a British bulldog that has a series of health issues. Wendy was brought to Birmingham Dogs Home as a stray as she was found abandoned in Solihull. As Fi Harrison, head of fundraising explains “Birmingham Dogs Home is sparing no expense to see that Wendy gets all the support she needs to get back her health and improve the quality of her life – but whilst treatment is undergoing Wendy struggles to walk in a straight line hence her affectionate nickname Wonky Wendy. Whilst receiving medical care, Wendy is currently being fostered by one of our team, so she is getting all of the TLC she so deserves.” Metro Bank colleagues from all four stores will also volunteer at the Birmingham Dogs Home across the next year to support the charity’s 130th birthday. “We have always been a dog friendly company and we are proud to be able to support such a fantastic charity that does so much to make the lives of dogs better,“ said Metro Bank local director, Lee Currier. “We know there is a link between dogs becoming ill and being given up to charities as the cost of healthcare is expensive. More than three million homes in the UK have got a new pet during the pandemic and we recently launched pet insurance to help dog owners manage the cost of their pet’s healthcare needs, but we wanted to do more to help – hence our sponsorship of the kennel which will help care for hundreds of dogs as they return to health and hopefully find a new forever home.”

The Metro Bank Solihull store is located at 119 High Street, Solihull, B91 3SR.

HISTORICAL GEM IN SOLIHULL olihull has some fascinating links to historic culture, and the Pugin church design in this feature showcases this hidden gem. Father Dominic the current Priest at St Augustine’s showed Melanie Palmer, Solihull BID Chief Executive, around the stunning venue. A new rectangular church, designed in 1839 by the world-renowned architect Augustus Welby Northmoor Pugin, was built at the side of the 1761 priest’s house. It has been described as Pugin’s first church and it is undoubtedly the oldest of Pugin’s existing churches. The breathtaking design is certainly worth a visit.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was born in 1812 and was an English architect, designer, artist, and critic famous for his leading role in the Gothic revival style of architecture. Well known for his designs of the interior of the Palace of Westminster and its clock tower which houses the iconic bell Big Ben. Along with designing many churches in England and a few in Ireland and Australia. The building was opened on the 6th February 1839 with Pugin as the cross bearer. In 1884 a small front porch was

added. In 1892 murals were painted by Joseph A Pippet. In 1932 A “Lourdes grotto” was erected in the front garden. In 1979 the 1878 presbytery was demolished to make room for the extension of the church. The seating in the Pugin church was turned through 90 degrees to face the new altar. A flat above the sacristy was incorporated to provide accommodation for the priest. In 2003 the side entrance porch was extended, when the Parish Hall was renovated. The Church is located next to John Lewis in Solihull Town Centre and is open on Saturday for Sunday Masses at 12.30pm and on Sunday at 9am and 11am. Confessions on Saturday 11am - 12pm.

MY BUSINESS LIFE

Oli Hills CEO of Nonsensical Oli is the CEO of Nonsensical – a TikTok Marketing Agency and Social Media Publisher. He will also be one of the judges for our Solihull BID Excellence Awards later this year. What does your day-to-day role involve? Day-to-day really involves shouting from the rooftops about TikTok and how it’s transforming the social media landscape. I’m regularly talking at events, hosting webinars or speaking with businesses about their social media and reflecting on how things are changing. I’m super fortunate to have an incredible team around me who are all so passionate about what they do. They are also way smarter and more talented than me, so I rarely need to get involved in the dayto-day creation of content. This frees me up to spend time on new opportunities for the agency and working with existing and prospective clients on how best to navigate the wonderful world of TikTok. What drives you every day? Social media is ridiculously hard to get right – it takes relentless creativity, planning and execution plus the ability to be able to drop things at the last minute to jump on relevant trends that can transcend the internet at a moment’s notice. Seeing the team produce content that gets people talking and engaging online is a huge buzz. I’m incredibly motivated to create a lasting business that is known globally as being a leader in our field. We’re nowhere near this yet and having such huge aspirations keeps me motivated to be able to achieve it. I also like how quickly digital marketing and innovations are developing so staying on top of these major shifts in the industry is hugely exciting and keeps you on your toes. What does success mean to you? If every member of the Nonsensical team went on to super high-profile roles in social 32

media or digital marketing or even left to set up their own agency, that would be incredible. To know that Nonsensical was able to breed and harness incredible talent and forward-thinking innovators who went on to do incredible things – that would be amazing. Obviously, I’d like them to stay at Nonsensical and help us to grow but the ability to unlock people’s potential and give them the confidence to go even further would be awesome. Another aspect of success for me is just loving what I do - I have to really believe in something and if every day I am working on something exciting and motivating, that’s a huge win. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your time working in social media? When it comes to social media, every day is a school day. You can’t ‘complete’ social media. As soon as you think you’re an expert, somebody will come up with something more innovative, more creative and more exciting. It’s important to have that relentless passion to keep trying new things. Fortunately, with the rapid pace of change in social media, there is the ability to rapidly test new ideas and try new types of content with almost immediate feedback. It’s crucial therefore to build a team of people who are passionate and motivated to learn and test something new every day. It’s an extremely challenging job to constantly be creative so it’s important that you’re fully committed to succeed in the industry – without that full commitment it can be exhausting so building a team of passionate creatives is fundamental to success. Who inspires you? I’m fortunate to come from a very entrepreneurial family and surround myself daily with like-minded entrepreneurs all doing incredible things in their certain sectors. Seeing my partner achieve incredible accolades such as an MBE for her work through her Social Enterprise and my brother and sister-in-law launching new innovative and exciting products into the competitive

coffee market fill me with such pride and inspiration. I’ve worked really hard to build a strong network of mentors and advisors who help me through challenges on a regular basis. The act of giving time to help and support me on my business journey is also hugely inspiring and something which I really value. What would you tell your 18-year-old self? Don’t compare yourself to other people and that you’re not responsible for people’s reactions to you. I spend far too much time comparing myself to others and feeling like I should be further ahead, or I should be working harder. I had to work really hard to break this mindset and sometimes I fall back into the trap – especially when working in social media. The reality is that people are only very likely to post good news on social media and will rarely say when things are tough – focus on yourself and do what makes you happy. Secondly, those who know me, know that I’m not a conventional business owner – I walk around in bright coats and fluorescent orange and blue personalised trainers. I’m pretty sure some people don’t like it but that is not my problem, it’s their problem. Not taking ownership of their problem and focusing on what makes you comfortable and being able to be your best is the most important thing. Life is too short to worry about what others say or think or do – just own your own style and be confident.

hursfields Solicitors has been ranked in the top ten of the Midlands’ most active mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisers for the whole of 2021.

Thursfields secures position in Midlands TOP 10 FOR CORPORATE DEALS

The leading regional law firm shot up from 25th to 10th in the annual Experian Market IQ’s legal rankings, with 25 big corporate deals over the first nine months of 2022. This has included advising shareholders on the sale of technology specialists cloudThing to Kerv, and advising creative agency DRPG on its acquisition of screen content specialists A-Vision UK. Most recently, Thursfields’ Corporate Team advised Jeremy Holden, founder of Herefordshire classic car and motorcycle parts business Holden Vintage & Classic, on its acquisition by international classic parts specialist SNG Barratt Group. The only firms ahead of Thursfields in the rankings were the longer

established or national corporate players. Gareth Burge, director and head of the Corporate team at Thursfields, said: “We recorded another record year in 2021 and have now consolidated our position as leading M&A lawyers to the owner managed business and SME market. “It’s great to see that, in the fairly short period of time our team has been together, we have made – and are continuing to make – a huge impact on the local market.” Experian’s M&A report for 2021 also revealed that the Midlands was the UK’s busiest region for dealmaking outside of London and the south-east, with involvement in 14.7% of all UK deals. There was an 18% increase in deal volume from 2020, and the values of these deals totalled £21.5bn, the highest since 2012. Dominic Parker, of Experian Market IQ said: “After many businesses postponed acquisition plans in 2020, deal-making in the Midlands bounced back from the effects of the pandemic last year, with 2021 ranked as one of the region’s busiest ever years. “Companies in the region’s highly-skilled engineering and manufacturing sectors were a particular target for investment.

Any businesses needing advice on M&A activity can contact Gareth Burge on 01905 677 043 or at gburge@thursfields.co.uk

“The funding environment remains positive, and the region’s corporate advisory firms report strong pipelines of business, raising hopes of another strong year as we move further into 2022.” 33

fresh look as KC Group celebrates 25 years on the High Street eading recruitment consultancy firm Kate+Co are celebrating 25 years on Solihull High Street by launching an exciting rebrand.

The new name – KC Group – reflects some ambitious plans for the future of the company whilst also giving a nod to its history. Set up by Katie Baird in 1997, the KC Group has been an important part of Solihull town centre’s business community ever since. That legacy will continue for years to come after the company agreed a new lease on their offices above 141 High Street, committing to having a presence in the town centre. “The pandemic gave us the opportunity to think long and hard about what we wanted Kate+Co, now the KC Group to look like,” Sarah Grace, Managing Director, said. “Although we considered moving out of Solihull town centre, we felt that we would be losing part of our heritage in doing so. Being in Solihull is part of who we are and it has been our home for so long, we wouldn’t feel comfortable being anywhere else.”

Despite Covid restrictions being firmly behind us, the repercussions of the pandemic are still being felt over two years since it started. Work-life balance and wellbeing quickly became hot topics with people being urged to work from home where they could by the Government. Employees continue to return to the office with many companies opting for a blended approach of home and office working, realising that being accommodating is key to cultivating a happy workforce. “The pandemic has undoubtedly forced employers to offer more flexibility to workers and candidates now hold the power in terms of what they will consider,” Sarah added. “Companies not offering any form of home working are struggling to attract talent. EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) is also an area that has been transformed. Companies that do not have this as an action point in their selection process are falling behind in the search for the best people.” The future is looking bright for the KC Group. The rebrand – designed by fellow Solihull town centre business RedKnows – is the first step with a streamlining of the business to follow. Finance, Human Resources, Business Support and Payroll divisions will be the focus for the company going forward with the aim to double their 16-strong workforce by the end of 2023. Solihull, Birmingham, Coventry and Warwick account for 65% of the clients the KC Group work with but the company has a continually growing reputation across the country which they expect to expand in the coming years.

“We are 25 years old in May and although the company has evolved hugely over the years – to the outside world we still appear to be the same organisation that we were back in the 90s,” Sarah said. “The new brand will mirror our values and our culture. We are proud of the legacy we have built to date but the new brand will communicate the national level that we operate on.”

rime Accountants Group have enjoyed phenomenal growth in the last year and are excited to be opening their 2022 graduate programme early this year to support their increased capacity. During what has been a tumultuous time for many industries, Prime are incredibly proud to have retained and grown their teams across the business. Prime Accountants Graduate programme opens early for 2022

Words from a successful graduate programme candidate

Tackling challenges with the right people

Accounts senior Emma Pithouse joined Prime as a graduate in 2016.

Prime director Morgan Davies said: “It’s been a strange few years for all industries and many are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic.

She said: “Prime’s graduate scheme was a great transition from university to work. It provided me with hands-on experience from the first day in my role and allocated time off to attend the accounting courses. “The audit and accounts department are a very approachable team, meaning that I’m never afraid to ask questions, and have had a great support network throughout.

“Prime, however, has took a different stance, as we knew the only way to tackle challenges was with the right people, and what better way than to nurture this talent yourself.

“It has allowed me to achieve my goal of becoming a chartered accountant and continues to guide me in growing within the department.”

“It’s why last year we took on the highest number of graduates we have ever taken on and are looking to do the same in 2022.”

PROGRAMME DETAILS Prime’s graduate programme is open to anyone at degree level with good quality A-level and GCSE results with a minimum of B/6 in GCSE maths and English. The programme offers successful candidates a chance to learn a wide variety of skills, including the functionalities behind audits, accounts, corporation tax and how accountancy software works. Your ‘on the job’ learning will be augmented by theoretical training as Prime offer a fully-supported and funded study package, allowing graduates to obtain professional qualifications at college.
