Oh how I do enjoy a longer summer, stretching its warm fingers out into September and even early October delaying that process of layering up for as long as possible. As always, the new autumn/winter season fashion is tempting to invest in. The structure and cut just seems to make us all look better, sharper and more ‘in charge’ than our tangerine seersucker shorts from July, so look away from Amy’s fashion selection if you don’t want to be tempted! It is a super busy time here in the BID office as we go to our renewal ballot in October where, if we are successful, we will be granted another five-year term to serve the businesses, workers, and visitors to Solihull. All BIDs (currently over 320 in the UK) have a set five-year tenure and are required to be democratically elected by the businesses within the BID area. This will be our third term and we have some exciting, ambitious and creative plans to deliver should we get the yes vote (more details at www.solihullbid.co.uk). Solihull continues to attract some great new businesses who see the benefit of investing in our town. The Beautique Studio, My Skin Spa and the Beauty Edit are all new arrivals attracting a lot of attention and doing brilliantly. The Beautique Studio on Warwick Road are quite frankly the best nail technicians I have ever known, painting free hand the Aston Villa lion emblem on to my nails for the all-important match at Wembley, who knew this was even possible?

Whether you’re looking for a bespoke birthday cake, a new website, legal advice, a coffee and a bite to eat or want to sell your home, Solihull’s independent businesses have every angle covered. A great example of our much-loved independents is Brides of Solihull, based on the Warwick Road, who have been trading in the town for almost three decades. With unique items and expert advice, Brides of Solihull help give our town centre that individual quality which the BID love to shout about and promote. Our Digital Communications Lead, Steven, spoke to Brides of Solihull joint owner Denise Taylor about life as an independent business.

Steven: Could you tell us a bit about what Brides of Solihull do and what makes you unique? Denise: Brides of Solihull specialize in wedding gowns for church weddings, civil weddings and weddings abroad. Our gowns are designed by top designers such as Mori Lee, Ronald Joyce, Ellis Bridal, Justin Alexander and Maggie Sottero. We are Premier Stockists for both Mori Lee and Justin Alexander. We also stock beautiful Prom dresses and Bridesmaid dresses in 52 different colours and veils and tiaras to enhance our wedding gowns. Not forgetting the Mother of the Bride/Groom, we stock fabulous outfits by Condice, Veni Infantino and John Charles with matching hats, bags and shoes which can be dyed to match the outfits.

D: Our wonderful long serving staff have been with us for anything between 10 years and 28 years and all of whom have many years of experience offering first class personal service to every bride. New stock arrives on a regular basis and our prices range from £500 to £3,000. S: What obstacles do you face in these tough retail times?

With unique items and expert advice, Brides of Solihull help give our town centre that individual quality

S: How long have you been trading in Solihull? D: We have now been trading in Solihull town centre for 28 years and we are based on the main Warwick Road. We have sold literally thousands of dresses to happy brides and in fact we have served three generations of families as they grow and get married! S: How important is it to have a close knit team to support your ideas and ambitions as an independent business?

D: Solihull is still a vibrant town in the current climate and our double fronted store is well situated on Warwick Road just off Mell Square. We have an excellent in house alteration service which really sets us apart. S: What is the most important advice you would give to somebody planning their wedding?

D: The best advice we would give to any bride is to do your research and only take two or three relatives or friends with you to look at and try on wedding dresses. Come with an open mind, try on different styles of dresses and allow our experienced team to help and advise you on what suits you best. S: Is there such a thing as the ‘perfect wedding’? D: Yes! Every wedding is perfect to the couple getting married. 9

Wasps Business Roadshow Solihull’s business community rubbed shoulders with Wasps Rugby Club’s players at a networking event in the town centre. Around 60 business people were joined by Wasps first-team players Marcus Garrett, Ross Neal and ex-England international and former Wasps player Paul Sackey at Revolution Bar on Station Road for the Wasps Business Roadshow, which was supported by Solihull BID. Nick Eastwood, Chief Executive of the Wasps Group, shared details about Ricoh

Wasps players Marcus Garrett (far left) & Ross Neal (second right) with Wasps Business Roadshow attendees.

Arena’s future plans, which has recently held a record year by welcoming 1.6 million visitors across 857 different events. Eastwood said: “An increasing number of businesses from the Solihull area are utilising our venue for meetings, conferences and exhibitions, or turning to Wasps matchday hospitality as a way of hosting clients and treating staff, which was reinforced by the great turnout we had for this event from businesses across the town. “We’ve had a record number of people visiting the venue over the past year, the evening was a great chance to remind people of the venue's busy activities.

“We had one of the world’s biggest girl groups – the Spice Girls – performing on June 3rd and 4th before the stadium bowl was transformed for a global live motorsport event on Saturday 8th June called Monster Jam. “Bon Jovi also returned to the venue for a third time on Sunday 23rd June to wrap up a big month of live entertainment. “Once we have people through the turnstiles it is about providing them with an experience to remember, which is why significant investment has been made to the venue with superfast Wi-Fi and strategic partnerships with industry-leading companies to lay the foundations for what is to come.”

My business life…

Claire Bullivant

Claire Bullivant is a journalist and Marketing Director at Bullivant Media - publishers of 15 regional newspapers (including the Solihull, Arden and Shirley Observers). Claire also runs and manages Bullivant Media’s magazine, social media and podcast divisions. She also hosts a podcast about celebrities in Hollywood called ‘Brits in the Wood’ and co-presents a weekly show on Solihull Radio called ‘What’s On Solihull.’ In her free time Claire loves to write romantic comedy screenplays, studies photography and is currently writing a children’s book about hedgehogs who save the world.

What does your day-to-day role involve? “My working day starts with a cup of tea over the overnight messages we’ve received through our newspaper social media accounts. We have papers in 15 towns and get so many messages – everything from “I’ve lost my dog, please help” to “I’m trying to raise funds for XYZ… can you help me get some publicity?” It’s actually a great way to start the day. I feel like I’m helping and connecting people. “I’ll then try and head to the gym and go through the national newspapers and our own papers that have been published that day. I’ll upload the main news stories onto our new Instagram accounts and make notes of any interesting stories we might discuss on that day’s newspaper podcast.

“No day is typical in my role but most days there will be a podcast recording which I often host and also edit. There will then always be some sort of writing which needs to done – a review of a show I’ve just seen at the theatre, an article for a magazine, a seasonal feature for one of the newspapers or interviewing a pop star who’s coming to town and offering us free tickets for a competition. It’s always very varied, the deadlines are always imminent and I never feel like I have enough time… but I love it. I’m always busy and always learning. “Then after work there’s normally some sort of function to attend. New restaurant openings, theatre productions, community talks, business networking events… all which will need to be written up tomorrow.“ What drives you every day? “Someone told me a few years ago to do something everyday that my future self will thank me for. Rather like planting little seeds - they will hopefully grow and bear fruit. So even if it’s just one little seed that I manage

to plant today… I know I’m growing and hopefully it will make my life, those around me and the world a little bit better tomorrow. “In the business world I’m also passionate at the moment about keeping regional newspapers alive. Without them important stories aren’t told, council meetings go uncovered and communities are left without a voice. “With so much ‘fake news’ and unchecked rumour pervading social media and unregulated websites nowadays too, it’s more important than ever for our communities to have voices they can trust and this drives so much of what I currently do at Bullivant Media.“ What does success mean to you? “I’ve interviewed some of the world’s most successful movers and shakers from Hollywood actors and rock stars to politicians and business leaders, and they all seem to reflect back so fondly on their time before they won that Oscar or before they had millions in the bank. Their happiest time was always ‘the journey.’ “So I’m just trying to enjoy the journey right now and if I’m happy – which I am - I consider that a success. “But I also think it’s incredibly important to give back. There was a philosopher who lived in the 19th century called Jeremy Bentham who said the greatest happiness is achieved from giving to the greatest number. I think you’re a real success when you can really help lots of other people. I also believe that’s where the most happiness is to be found.“ What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your time in business? “Be true to your word and get a great team around you. You can’t do it all by yourself so it’s important to be surrounded by people you trust and admire.

“I work with so many talented people and not only is it wonderful when you can really rely on them to do a great job and represent your company or brand in a fantastic way but you can also learn so much from them too. People bring different skill sets to the table… embrace and empower them.“ Who inspires you?

“I am from a family of newspaper entrepreneurs, my parents Chris and Pat Bullivant are written up in the British Museum’s History of Newspapers for launching the UK's first free daily title, the Daily News, back in 1984. In fact, they’ve launched over 70 newspapers over the years and I’ve seen how hard they work. They never stop. But they’ve also done it with such integrity and style…they’re really honest, kind and honourable people. I’m so proud of them and every single day they inspire me to be a better person. My brother is now talking over the reins and I see the same qualities in him." What would you tell your 18-year-old self? “Fortune favours the brave’ is a philosophy I’ve really started to embrace. When I was younger I was definitely more apprehensive about trying things that scared me or I might not be good at. So I’d definitely tell an 18-yearold me to woman up and give everything a go… be brave, take chances, fail, get up and try again… it’s all part and parcel of learning and becoming a better person. “No-one is an overnight success story. You have to fail a few times before any real success. If you don’t, the success won’t feel as special. Sounds clichéd but you can’t appreciate a rainbow without a little rain. “I’d also tell myself to leave my hair alone and not to marry that first guy that asked me (laughs).“

NEWS & DEVELOPMENTS FROM ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LEADING COMMERCIAL REGIONS

SOLIHULL BID 2020-2025 The date has been confirmed for a confidential ballot that will have a huge impact on the future of Solihull town centre.

S

olihull BID – or Business Improvement District – is asking more than 450 businesses in the town centre to renew its term for the period 2020-2025 through the postal ballot. Taking place between 3rd and 31st October 2019, the ballot result will be announced on 1st November 2019.

A Business Improvement District is a defined area within which local businesses collaborate to invest in projects, services and initiatives to improve the environment in which they work. BIDs deliver additional services to those provided by the Borough Council, West Midlands Police and transport bodies.

Solihull BID was created in 2010 to help support a thriving business community around the town centre, including Mell Square, Touchwood and The Core. Chaired by Kevin Johns of Prime Accountants, the BID board is represented by some of the most influential people in the town centre, covering all sectors and areas of business life. The renewal ballot is a process all BIDs must go through every five years to secure the support of the businesses they represent through a percentage levy on Business Rates. Solihull town centre offers a vibrant mix of retail, leisure, food and drink and office-based

companies. The BID represents all areas of the local economy with high-profile events, marketing and promotion and ambassadorial roles to help visitors to the town centre. Achievements include the annual red-carpet Excellence Awards, which shine a light on the talented employees and forward-thinking companies in the town centre.

The BID also operates the annual Food and Drink Festival, Solihull Jazz Festival, seasonal Festive Feast and attractions such as the Lego brick pits, which attracted families from across the borough during the Easter holidays. Writing in the BID’s Term 3 Business Plan, a 32-page document that will be shared with all member businesses to outline plans for the years ahead, Chair Kevin Johns says: “In order to look forward we must consider the path already travelled.

INBUSINESS

SPECIAL REPORT

THE FUTURE OF THE HIGH STREET PART TWO: INDEPENDENTS’ DAY InSolihull magazine continues to look at the health of high streets and how our town centres can prosper in future. Stacey Barnfield reports.

W

ould it surprise you to read that independents account for 65% of all retail and leisure units in Great Britain?

We read daily, sometimes hourly, headlines forecasting a grim future for the high street as once go-to brands pull down their shutters after struggling to keep up with changing consumer behaviour and the impact of ‘bricks to clicks’ online shopping.

Amid this gloomy analysis can our brilliant independent business owners change that message through innovative thinking and a unique consumer experience? Independents have a vital role to play if we are to redefine our high streets and make town centres fit for 21st century shopping, working and living. Solihull town centre has a buzzing and thriving mix of small

businesses offering shoppers and diners something different. Visit Drury Lane or Mill Lane and you’ll find an attractive mix of interiors and fashion independents, salons and boutiques, each offering a special reason to visit the town centre. You will discover Katherine Draisey, specialists in ladies fashion, handbag guru Lesley Ashworth, must have home

accessories at Liv's and contemporary hair styles at Alexander James; these are just some of the great independent businesses that make Solihull town centre unique. Across town, the UK’s first gourmet Jamaican jerk chicken restaurant, Jamaya, opened in Touchwood shopping centre earlier this year. The restaurant serves charcoal grilled jerk and gourmet Jamaican fried chicken, with a variety of jerk sauces. Touchwood is the company’s first venue. Jamaya followed the opening of award-winning Asha’s Indian restaurant to add to Touchwood’s variety of retail, leisure and dining options. Located on Warwick Road, Tap & Tandoor, created by husband and wife team, Ajay and Shivani Kenth, specialises in craft beers, cocktails and Indian food. It recently celebrated its first anniversary and was crowned Best Independent at the Solihull BID Excellence Awards 2018. The building has undergone an extensive refurbishment transforming what was The Saddlers Arms into an openplan bar and 80-seater restaurant mixing a traditional pub with Indian heritage. It is Ajay and Shivani’s second

venue. The couple opened the successful Zindiya, an Indian Streatery and bar, in Moseley in February 2017.

“We also aim to be a creative hub for offices and businesses in Solihull, with networking events at Tap & Tandoor.

Ajay has lived in the area for over 30 years, so was delighted to bring a new concept to Solihull, with a huge emphasis on quality food, drink and experience. He understands fully the importance of offering something unique to stand out from the crowd.

“It’s great to have gained support from Chamber of Commerce, Solihull BID and Mell Square – it’s really encouraging for independent businesses.”

Local produce and suppliers are crucial to the restaurant’s appeal. Free range meat is used in the kitchen, wines are provided by Connolly’s in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and beers from the award-winning Alcesterbased Purity Brewery. The cocktail menu has been compiled by renowned Birmingham mixologist Robert Wood of 18/81 bar and Tap & Tandoor makes its own rose pink gin. “At three months old, we received national press coverage, by being featured in Shortlist magazine. We feel proud to be at the forefront of Solihull’s growing independent food and drink scene, and are keen to continue promoting the area with our marketing,” explains Ajay. “We’ve also had great reviews from our customers as well as bloggers and reviewers from newspapers, magazines and online guides.

A major high street chain with an awareness of ‘localism’ and the need to cater for consumers in each of the areas it is based is global fashion retailer New Look, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, joined the debate about the future of the high street after calling for a wholesale review of Britain’s business rates system, which has been described as unfit for purpose in today’s overlap between high street and online retail. In an appearance at the Treasury Select Committee the former John Lewis Managing Director said business rates fall disproportionately on the retail and manufacturing sectors, arguing the system must be overhauled in order to help town centres. The Mayor was appearing at the

Committee alongside retail expert Ojay McDonald, chief executive of the Association of Town and City Management. Mr Street called for reduced rates for new and expanding businesses, as well as a 100% relief for public sector organisations who bring their services into high street units. He added: “Our town centres and in particular our high streets are the heart of where we live, and they are having a tough time. We need to think originally to come up with practical solutions to help them thrive again.”

The retail giant’s Mell Square store played a central role in the recent Solihull’s Fashion Secret weekend of events, appearing alongside independent boutiques to showcase seasonal fashions and style tips. “New Look is passionate about the communities we serve – with over 500 stores and 13,500 team members across the UK and Republic of Ireland, together with a successful online offer, our ‘localness’ is a key strength for us,” says Retail Director, Mark Axon. “We aim to tailor our product ranges for a particular market and are proud of the role our team members play in their own communities.” 17

Val's

Recipes

We have the cake whisperer, and favourite from Great British Bake Off 2016, Val Stones joining us again for this year's Solihull Food and Drink Festival, and we cannot wait to welcome her back on stage. We had a chat with Val before the festival to find out her favourite recipes to make with the little ones, we had to share them with you all! Discover Val’s secrets below… now it's time to get messy.

RECIPE

Quick and Easy Mocha Chocolate Mousse “My long-time friend Jenny gave me this recipe and over the years I have developed the recipe and added a few twists. The recipe contains no raw egg so it’s possible to serve this to young children or those with an egg allergy.”

Method Serves: 4 people Prep time: 15 minutes Chill time: 1 hour

1.

Cut the marshmallows into pieces and place in a small saucepan.

2.

Add the milk and coffee and stir over a low heat for about 2 minutes or until the marshmallows have melted.

3.

Add the chocolate chips to the marshmallow mixture. If you are using a bar of chocolate coarsely chop the chocolate before adding to the mixture.

85g dark chocolate at least 50% cocoa fat, I use chocolate chips as they melt more easily.

4.

Heat gently for 2 minutes or until the chocolate has melted, stirring constantly, set aside until cool.

142ml whipping cream

5.

Whip the cream until it reaches stiff peaks, gently fold in the vanilla extract and the coffee liqueur, fold the cream into the chocolate mixture until combined. Spoon the mousse into 4 dessert glasses.

6.

To make the Chantilly cream place the cream in a bowl with the dried milk powder and icing sugar then stir, leave for 2 minutes to allow the powder and sugar to dissolve.

7.

Whip the cream until it reaches stiff peak stage and then fold in the coffee liqueur.

8.

Place the cream in a piping bag fitted with a 2D star nozzle and pipe a swirl of cream on each pudding.

9.

Top with a chocolate covered coffee bean and grate a little chocolate over the top of the pudding.

Ingredients

16 large marshmallows (100g) 1/4 pint (142ml) semi skimmed milk 3 teaspoons of instant coffee

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon of coffee liqueur (optional)

Chantilly Cream 150ml double cream 1 tablespoon dried milk powder 1 tablespoon icing sugar 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur (optional)

Decoration Chocolate covered coffee beans Dark chocolate to grate over the finished mousse

10. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

RECIPE

Ice Cream Cone Shortbread Biscuits “I have made so many biscuits with this recipe I have lost count. I started making them as a teenager for my family, then I made them with my own two children. I have continued making them every year with children in school. You might like to make these for your family, staff, teammates, colleagues, or for a sale. You can give them bagged up or not. Although these biscuits are ice cream cones the recipe can be used for any shaped biscuit. This biscuit recipe is egg free and so is good for anyone with an egg allergy.”

Serves: 24-30 small round biscuits or about 15 cones Preparation time: 15 minutes plus chilling time. Cooking time: 30-35 minutes Icing time: about 15 minutes

Biscuit ingredients

Method – Biscuits

Method – Royal Icing

1.

Place the flour and semolina in a bowl and combine or use a food processor.

1.

2.

Add the butter, sugar, extract and rub in by hand with your fingertips until it begins to come together then knead lightly until the mixture forms a ball. This can be done in a processor and stop as soon as a ball is formed.

Using either a hand electric mixer or a stand mixer lightly beat the egg whites with the lemon juice or the glycerine.

2.

Sieve the icing sugar add half to the egg whites and beat well.

3.

Add the remainder of the icing sugar a tablespoon at a time until the icing is stiff enough to stand in peaks.

4.

At this point divide and put the icing into a number of bowls depending on the colours you will be using. Leave one bowl white and then add gel colour to the icing, keep the colours pastel shades.

5.

Place the icing nozzle in an icing bag before you cut the tip off the bag that way you can judge how much to cut off and not waste any bags then snip off the end of the bag until the nozzle fits easily.

Pre heat the oven to 160C fan,180190C,350-375F, gas 4-5

230g plain flour 100g semolina

225g unsalted butter

Whilst your biscuits cool, make the royal icing

3.

Knead for a few turns until smooth and then wrap in cling film, place in the refrigerator to rest for at least 20 minutes.

4.

Remove the dough from the refrigerator. Lightly flour a surface and knead the dough for a few turns to make sure the dough is smooth.

5.

Roll the dough out thinly, it should be the thickness of a pound coin. Turn the dough once, roll and turn again so that the dough is evenly rolled out.

40g egg white (1 -2 egg whites)

6.

Half a teaspoon of lemon juice for a firm icing or Half a teaspoon glycerine to keep the icing soft

Use the cutter of your choice to shape the biscuits and prick them lightly with a fork when they are on the baking tray.

7.

Place in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, check after 25 minutes, the shortbread should be lightly golden.

100g caster sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 25g Demerara or caster sugar for dusting

Royal icing 250g icing sugar

Flavouring and colourings as required or half a teaspoon of each

Decoration

8.

Ice cream cone biscuit cutter (or cutter of your choice) Disposable piping bags Fine piping nozzle number 3 Six-point star nozzle 2D

9.

Enjoy !

Take out of the oven. Scatter with the caster sugar if you are making them undecorated and leave to cool on the baking tray for a minute before placing on a cooling rack.

Leave to cool completely before packing into an airtight container if you are not going to decorate them.

Tips I keep two plastic rulers that are the thickness that I want the dough to be for my biscuits or you can use a £1 coin. Use a bag clip to seal the top of the bag so adults and children don’t squeeze the icing out of the top. Once the biscuit icing is completely set (this can take overnight) the biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Pup Loving Pubs The Beech House

In Solihull along with 3 great parks we also have a number of dog friendly venues, so it’s no surprise that we welcome hundreds of our fluffy friends to the town centre each year. We decided to test out Solihull and its claim of dog friendly venues with Solihull BID’s own Newshound, Misty and we weren’t disappointed with the response. What shocked us the most was the genuine enthusiastic warm welcome we received at all the venues, we had to wrestle the lead from one bar member who just fell in love with Misty. Long gone are the days of an old rusty pail of brown water outside in the car park, we were offered fresh water in a variety of bowls, and dog treats at all. Revolution on Station Road stepped up a level with dog toys, poop bags, selection of treats and even a grooming brush. The highest fuss level award goes to The Beech House and Paramo Lounge, it was hard to leave the comfy seats

and general oohs and ahhs from the public. With Tudor Grange Park a stone's throw away, Boston Tea Party is the ideal location to pop in for an ethical coffee and dog treat. Other dog friendly venues include the likes of Tap & Tandoor, O’Neill’s and The Indian Brewery.

voco St Johns Hotel

The pet market in the United Kingdom is one of the largest in Europe, with 49 percent of people claiming to own a pet and 26 percent of those people owning a dog. Pup loving pubs have got a paw on the pulse of one of the largest growing global economies. Us dog devoted Brits will regularly spend more on our pooches than a friend, and so why not spend more time out socialising with our faithful four-legged pals.

We also checked out the newly launched Voco St Johns hotel on the Warwick Road, warmly welcomed at the reception and although no visible dog treats the staff were extremely accommodating and confirmed the hotel is dog friendly with no issues with dogs staying in the guest rooms. Spending more time with your beloved friend has lots of benefits with many studies suggesting that owning a pet can benefit your health, we spoke to Fiona Sanderson from Work Wellness about the positive effects of owning a pet. "Owning a pet has tremendous benefits for both physical and mental wellness. For dog owners especially, getting outside for walks can improve cardiovascular health and lower diabetes risk, as well as providing an opportunity for socialisation with others we meet often in our local park. A sunny day boosts Vit D too (always wear sunscreen!). The company of a pet provides comfort and support unconditionally and listening ears that are safe to share our worries or concerns. Pets have been shown to ease anxiety and reduce loneliness too. Research confirms the many benefits of pet ownership, as shown in this excellent piece from the Mental Health Foundation: https://www.mentalhealth. org.uk/a-to-z/p/pets-and-mental-health”. So, for a weekend with a difference bring your faithful partners (fluffy or otherwise) into Solihull. Visit for the genuine hospitality, beautiful parks, enjoy a touch of retail therapy in dog friendly stores such as White Stuff and Livs, and maybe stay over, sounds like fun to us!

Misty’s Fun Facts About Pets Cats biologically can’t break down plant-based foods efficiently and they don’t provide the nutrients your cat needs to survive; therefore, cats are incapable of being a vegetarian. A hamster ages a year every 15 days, because a human year is equal to 25 hamster years! Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. Humans have approximately 9,000 and cats have around 473 Studies demonstrate that dogs align themselves with the earth’s magnetic field before pooping, preferring to face either north or south before doing their business.

BUCKET LIST

Destinations Travel inspires a sense of adventure, and nothing shouts adventure more than ticking those hot destinations off your bucket list. With over 50 years travel industry experience between them, let the award-winning team at Co-operative Travel Solihull help make your travel wish list a reality. Rest assured that they work with the widest selection of suppliers to find your perfect break and that your holiday is in safe hands with ABTA and ATOL protection.

ICEL AND

THAIL AND

Volcanoes and glaciers, hot springs and ice fields, the aptly nicknamed ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ is relatively new to the bucket list scene. Reykjavik, the island's capital boasts stunning contemporary architecture and a trendy foodie community. Prepare to try dark rybread from a hot spring, fish jerky and (very unexpectedly) Icelandic ice cream…!

Thailand was first thrust into the spotlight as the teen backpackers dream… With stunning beaches and a fascinating culture the ‘Land of Smiles’ is on many a purse-friendly bucket list. For a truly authentic experience, a twin centre holiday encompassing both city and beach is a must!

Perhaps best known for its seriously dramatic scenery, a trip to Iceland is incomplete without a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon. The beautiful blue-white water sits in stark contrast to the surrounding volcanic landscape creating what’s arguably one of the most otherworldly destinations on Earth. Get off the beaten track and into nature on a Golden Circle tour, taking in Thingvellier National Park, volcanic crater lakes and geysers. From September to late March, Mother Nature’s most elusive display, the mystical Northern Lights draws those in search of a little magic, but during the summer the Midnight Sun casts her own spell, keeping the dark nights at bay.

Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital, promises a glorious assault on the senses. Street food bursting with authentic flavours, colourful fresh flowers, and a myriad of faces and voices of visitors from around the world in amongst smiling locals. Along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, you’ll find sacred Buddhist temples amongst skyscrapers and luxury shopping malls. After exploring Bangkok, take time to wind down in paradise. Koh Samui and Phuket are firm beach resort favourites whilst Kao Lak and Koh Samet are still relatively up and coming, so you’ll likely be holidaying with the locals on powder white sands at the foot of clear, turquoise waters.

N E W YO R K From the dizzying heights of the Empire State building to horsedrawn carriage rides in Central Park, the ‘Big Apple’ is jam-packed full of big ticket bucket list adventures. Marvel at the city’s spectacular skyline on a helicopter tour, ride the Staten Island ferry to gaze at Lady Liberty and shop ‘til you drop at Woodbury Common. Take time from your busy day to pause at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, visiting the reflection pools that lay in the footprint of where the Twin Towers once stood. The big bonus of visiting the city that never sleeps? The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down! Catch a toe tapping show on Broadway, see the bright lights of Times Square or for an extra special occasion, treat yourself to fine dining atop many a skyscraper. Teeming with iconic sights and mustdo experiences, there’s no knocking New York off the bucket list top spot.

This summer Solihull BID are teaming up with Touchwood, The Core and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to go back in time. Join us on an adventure down memory lane as part of our exciting ‘Postcard From Solihull’ event. Throughout August, you are invited to follow our trail around the town centre to see images and insights into what Solihull looked like going back to the early 20th century. McDonald’s visitors will see that they are munching burgers on the site of the old Post Office, whilst a full High Street image taken in 1948 will be displayed in Touchwood showing a very different picture to the town centre we see today. You’ll also have the chance to take part in a guided tour through the heart of Solihull ‘village’, taking you on a journey through history for an hour. The walk is pedestrianised throughout and is suitable for wheelchair users, to book and find more information go to www. facebook.com/solihullcentrallibrary. The Core will also be home to some fabulous old fashioned games

which will see kids and their older relatives having fun together. Researchers at the Library discovered a game played in town centres many years ago. Children are encouraged to follow a trail to find items in shop windows which do not belong there, hence the title ‘Cuckoo in the Nest’. The rogue items can then be identified to be in with the chance to win a prize. Take a trip down memory lane and stir those nostalgic thoughts throughout August this year. We want you to share your memories too and you will be able to fill in a postcard at the Touchwood information desk, we can then share your memories with others. Your local, award winning legal experts Making the most of your Retail Space High business rates, slowing consumer spending, online shopping etc. the difficulties facing retailers appear to be ever present and continually increasing with no silver bullet in sight. Despite the difficulties however there are some shining lights, both big and small with success stories to be found where retailers have adapted to the current market and their surroundings and made a bold use of the space available to them. Location and Collaboration It’s an uphill struggle to sell sausages at a vegan market and yet without adapting to their surroundings retailers can find themselves in such an environment. Whilst it’s very difficult to control many external factors by adapting and collaborating with other operators renewed life can be breathed into the high street, with numerous examples in towns from Altrincham to York showing the way. Co-ordinating opening times (9 to 5 is no longer the norm), providing complimentary offerings and investing in initiatives such as an on street market, clean ups and safety campaigns and reducing noise have all been shown to reinvigorate previously struggling areas.

Using Your Space Maximising the space available in any unit is also crucial to success. With the move to online shopping increasing many retailers, both large and small, are using their space to showcase products and also providing parcel collection and returns facilities. Additionally, sharing their space with complimentary offerings can also bring rewards, for example the bank, beauty salon or bookshop sharing space with a coffee outlet or post office counter. So in terms of the bricks and mortar limitations

on an individual retailer what physical steps can they take to improve their offering? As a Tenant Step 1 is to check what is permitted in your Lease. Does the Lease permit sharing with a third party? Does it allow the tenant to knock down a wall to provide an open plan space? Whilst many leases are restrictive the struggle to attract and retain Tenants has meant that Landlords have had to become less restrictive and more flexible. In the current market Tenants can be bolder with their requirements and seek the necessary provisions that will provide the opportunity to adapt, including asking for and winning variations to existing leases that enable them to react to opportunities, and we are increasingly seeing that this is an approach Landlord’s are responsive to.

Pathway to Success Whilst there is no easy pathway to establishing a successful retail business there are steps that can be taken to provide the opportunity to succeed, these include knowing your market, working with others and ensuring your lease works for you rather than against you.
