The highlight of the year so far was definitely our annual Making a Difference Awards. It truly is a privilege to pay tribute to our amazing staff and volunteers, who work so hard to make a difference to the people who need our services.

It was a fantastic evening and there was a wonderful atmosphere in the room as we celebrated the achievements of the finalists. I was particularly pleased that this year, for the first time, we presented a Volunteer of the Year Award to recognise the commitment of those people who generously give their time to support the Trust. Our master of ceremonies for the evening, Peter Barron, did an excellent job and everyone I’ve spoken to said they thoroughly enjoyed the event. You can read more about the awards and the worthy winners in the centre pages of this magazine.

It was a pleasure to meet many service users and staff at the Durham and Darlington co-production conference in March to learn more about what we’re doing, and could be doing, to encourage service users to get involved in our work. We got some great feedback on how we could involve service users more and the benefits this will bring.

An excellent example of how service users are making a real difference to how we develop services is our new Recovery College Online. This innovative new website offers recovery-focussed courses for service users, carers and staff. And, what I think is really important, it’s been developed in partnership with people with lived experience of mental ill health. I went along to the launch of the new site in Middlesbrough on 23 March and was really impressed with what I heard. Supporting people to achieve the goals they set themselves is really important and the Recovery College Online is another way of helping us do just that. I’m looking forward to seeing the site continue to develop over the coming months. You can read more about the launch on page 3.

It’s important that staff feel able to raise concerns and at the Board meeting in March we heard from the Trust’s Freedom to Speak up Guardian, Dewi Williams. Board members were very supportive of the work he’s doing to make sure that the Trust listens and responds to staff. You can view this and other Board papers on our website www.tewv.nhs.uk.

Living the Values is the chairman’s award for staff who have made a difference to service users, carers and families, colleagues or other customers.

Getting arty As part of a Trust competition, artistic service users from child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) have been getting creative and designing artwork to feature on voucher wallets which are sent to young people with their payment for any Trust involvement activities they take part in.

Two CAMHS service users and Catherine Haigh, Trust governor, Middlesbrough, judged the entries and were overwhelmed by the standard of colourful and thought-provoking artwork.

Service user Faith Wilthew’s unicorn design was chosen as the winning design. Faith said: “I really enjoyed taking part in the competition. My design was inspired by the power of the belief that anything is possible”.

Catherine presented Faith with a certificate and shopping vouchers; Faith’s unicorn artwork will now become the main feature of the voucher wallet.

Recovery College Online now live The Trust’s new Recovery College Online website is now live.

Checking out the new website on launch day

Believed to be a first in the UK, the site offers Trust service users, carers and staff a range of online recovery-focussed courses along with generic mental health information for the wider public.

Developed with ARCH recovery college and people with lived experience of mental ill health, the site was launched in March at an event held at Middlesbrough Football Club.

Around 100 service users, carers, staff, governors and members of the public attended the launch where they found out more about the site’s development, saw the courses for themselves and learnt how they could contribute to the site’s content as it develops further in the coming months.

Claire Chapman, recovery college manager, said: “The Recovery College Online brings ARCH recovery college courses to those who cannot join us at ARCH in Durham. Those taking part in courses can log in to the secure section of the Recovery College Online website and follow courses at their own pace.”

Digital developments A trial using iPads to carry out cognitive assessments in Redcar children’s services has seen positive results. With Q-interactive™ the examiner and the examinee each have synced iPads, so the examiner can see responses, as well as controlling the patient’s screen view.

Software records the time taken to complete each test and scores it automatically.

Voice recordings can also be made for verbal responses.

Cognitive assessments are used to assess a child's IQ, perceptual abilities, verbal and nonverbal skills and attention and processing or memory abilities, and are an integral part of clinical psychologists’ work. Using digital assessments saves time for both the clinician and the patient. The tests are auto-populated, so psychologists don’t need additional time to calculate scoring and the young people and their families don’t need to return for another appointment to discuss results.

Learning about libraries Every day across the healthcare sector in England more than a million decisions are made that have a profound and lasting impact on people's lives and which influence the quality of healthcare and the cost of services.

Now a campaign, ‘A Million Decisions’, is in place to encourage people involved in policy making and care delivery to use the skills of librarians and knowledge specialists to make sure decisions are evidence-based.

Our library service helps staff with a myriad of requests. Clinicians recently planning a new inpatient facility were considering if they should incorporate seclusion rooms in their design and they contacted the Trust’s librarians who provided a literature review to help them decide.

#icanpreventdelirium Jacqui Dyson and Conor Davidson

Becoming more autism aware Work is underway across the Trust to help staff become more autism aware.

The Trust’s second #icanpreventdelirium conference took place in January focussing on the ‘suspect it, spot it, stop it’ message when it comes to delirium in care homes and acute settings.

Initiated by the Trust's proactive mental health services for older people team (Teesside), the conference was held in conjunction with, and funded by, Health Education England North East (HEENE). The event looked at the importance of community care and management of delirium.

Many delegates from acute and care home settings were among the 200 who attended the event. A number of nationally recognised experts in delirium led presentations and workshops during the day.

Jacqui Dyson, Trust autism strategy manager, and Conor Davidson, Trust clinical lead for autism, are leading the development of the Trust’s autism strategy which aims to run autism awareness through all that we do from clinical pathways to training and leadership.

Dr Kim Barkas, senior registrar in old age psychiatry, Woodside Resource Centre, Middlesbrough, said: “Delirium can manifest itself in many ways and quickly so suspecting and spotting it early on is hugely important – this was a key message during the conference for all but in particular for people working in acute and care home settings.”

Conor said: “We are looking at our care and treatment to make that better for service users with autism, and at our working environment to support staff with autism.”

#icanpreventdelirium was awarded runner-up at the Northern Lights Dementia Quality Improvement Awards in March.

Jacqui added: “Many service users and staff with autism find certain situations difficult; we can each make adjustments to improve people’s experiences with us.”

Helping make a healthier Harrogate We’ve recruited five new members of staff to work alongside other health and social care colleagues to provide improved, joined-up care for residents in Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough.

Our registered mental health nurses are working as wellbeing practitioners in ‘Vanguard’ teams with social workers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, care support workers, voluntary services and GPs. They see people in their homes or residential care homes, and

help reduce referrals into secondary care or hospital for people with mental ill health including dementia, delirium and depression.

As well as providing mental health care, they also carry out some standard wound care and physical healthcare checks, and support people with long-term conditions.

In addition, the new recruits help to educate other health staff in the community care teams, like district nurses and healthcare support workers, about mental health issues.

Helping hand for veteran Veterans wellbeing assessment and liaison service (VWALS) support worker David Findlay has helped 93year-old veteran George Skipper settle into life as a Chelsea Pensioner.

Parkside Mental Health Resource Centre (MHRC) in Middlesbrough has been officially opened by Trust chairman Lesley Bessant.

The occasion was marked by the unveiling of a plaque in February at the new building which provides community mental health services in Middlesbrough for adults with a range of mental health conditions.

Over £2million has been invested by the Trust in the modern purpose-designed environment.

Service users were involved throughout the interior design process and colour schemes and wall art chosen by service users now add to the welcoming environment.

Parkside MHRC is a community team hub for all four adult mental health teams across

Middlesbrough including the psychosis, early intervention in psychosis, access and affective disorders teams. They provide assessment, support, treatment and therapies to those who need specialist secondary mental health services.

Previously located at Phoenix Lodge, Middlesbrough and Lakeside, Hemlington, the teams now work under one roof and are already seeing rewards through improved communications and integration within the teams.

The new accommodation includes consultation, therapy and meeting rooms, with one designed specifically for art therapy sessions. Disabled access is also available.

Lesley Bessant said: “It’s great to see that TEWV is investing in our community services, as well as inpatient services. We know that having a great environment, whether as a service user or staff member, helps us all improve our mental well-being”.

David, based at North End House, Durham, met George when he was referred to VWALS by the Royal British Legion. He had become lonely and isolated following his wife’s death.

David, a veteran himself, offered George specialist support and suggested he consider applying to become a Chelsea Pensioner – advice Mr Skipper followed and he is now happily resident in the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London.

David, said: “We were able to get George in touch with local groups and eventually encourage him to apply to the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

It’s so pleasing to see this gentleman now enjoying a happier future as a Chelsea Pensioner.”

Brushing up on skills Service users in the forensic learning disability inpatient service at Ridgeway, Roseberry Park, Middlesbrough have been brushing up on their literacy and numeracy skills.

Reading skills workshops were set up in partnership with Middlesbrough Community Learning after identifying, in occupational therapy assessments, that difficulties with reading skills were limiting service users’ ability to take part in daily activities.

The workshops, held last year, included completing activities around topics of interest.

Feedback from service users has been positive, with learners stating they were reading more in everyday life and that they felt more confident.

Alongside this, 25 staff attended training on the impact low levels of literacy and numeracy can have on life skills. The popularity of the workshops led to successful mathematics skills workshops also being held.

Celebrating research Quality research evidence plays an important part in the delivery of our services and improving the quality of the care we provide.

The Trust’s research and development team takes part in many research studies, some of which service users can get involved in.

Staff attending learnt more about how research can benefit their clinical work and the support available to carry out research in the Trust.

Dr David Ekers, nurse consultant, who led the Durham COBRA study site “The practical nature of behavioural activation and the relative simplicity of delivery makes it an attractive option for NHS services. There’s already interest within TEWV to make this effective intervention more available to service users and this offers a cost effective option to provide evidence based psychological interventions for depression across a range of clinical teams”

Two recent and significant large-scale research studies we have been involved in are: COBRA (Cost Effectiveness of Behavioural Activation Study) Researchers investigated the cost effectiveness of behavioural activation (BA) treatment for depression delivered by non-specialist mental health workers compared to the gold standard cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The research found excellent improvements in the symptoms and functioning of participants in both treatments showing BA worked as well as CBT; BA can be implemented at 20% lower cost than CBT, as more junior staff can deliver BA, and the research revealed BA could also reduce waiting times.

Understanding family experiences of living with people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) This study investigated the lived experience of family carers of adults with PIMD and dysphagia, in relation to mealtimes and food. The findings are being used to help practitioners change their practice to be more person-centred and take account of social and emotional needs of patients and families, as well as health needs.

Our The Making a Difference Awards 2016 was special in many ways.

Not only have we reached a milestone in this being our tenth awards, this year saw a record number of nominations, 233 in total, received from staff, service users and their families, and partner organisations.

The 2016 awards also saw the arrival of a number of new categories designed to recognise and celebrate the vast range of services and support staff and volunteers offer.

The 40 finalists, made up of teams and individuals from across the Trust, along with supporting colleagues, met at Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield in March for the Making a Difference Awards 2016 ceremony.

Hosted by author and former Northern Echo editor Peter Barron (below right), Trust chief executive Colin Martin and Trust chairman Lesley Bessant, the awards celebrated the work of many wonderful, dedicated staff and volunteers.

Lesley Bessant said: “I was honoured to take part in this year’s Making a Difference Awards. It was an absolute pleasure to meet the many teams and individuals who truly demonstrate our Trust values and hear about the amazing work they do to support and improve the lives of our service users and their families and carers.”

Innovative approach The Trust’s Innovation Fund has provided £55,000 to six voluntary / community programmes in the York and Selby area to deliver projects to local people who are living with, or at risk of mental ill health and learning disabilities.

The Innovation Fund, managed for the Trust by Your Consortium, supports local projects to deliver programmes and activities which can help people overcome barriers to achieving good mental health and emotional well-being.

Purple Patch Arts, Saint Michael’s Hospice, Friends of St. Nicholas Fields, York Mind, Community Furniture Store Selby and The York Stars were chosen by the Fund.

Ruth Hill, director of operations for York and Selby, said: “By working with organisations to

deliver innovative and engaging programmes for people who are at risk of needing mental health support, we can engage with people through meaningful activities before problems arise, and tackle issues early. The Fund also works with organisations which help people currently receiving mental health support by providing additional community based activities for them.”

It is hoped that the projects will reduce pressure on mental health resources in York and Selby and help lead to an improved integrated approach to mental health across the area incorporating health and wellbeing with education, employment and housing.

Trust staff have walked their way to Tokyo or thereabouts as part of a pedometer challenge.

To encourage staff to move more and reduce sedentary behaviour, the Trust’s health and wellbeing team organised ‘TEWVactive’ lunchtime walks, yoga, Tai Chi, dance sessions, participation in the national Workplace Challenge and the staff pedometer step challenge.

Staff certainly got involved and clocked up 16.5 million steps in the pedometer challenge – enough to walk to Tokyo – and many registered their at, and outside, work activities on the Workplace Challenge site putting the Trust on the regional leaderboard.

If you are a service user, carer or family member, public governor, health professional, Trust member or a member of the public this is your opportunity to take part in a survey to help us make sure we are meeting your needs.

Governor spotlight

Spirituality and recovery Spirituality and the role it has to play in mental health recovery is the focus of the Trust’s next spirituality conference which will be held at Durham University in July.

Simon Hughes has been a staff governor since the start of the Foundation Trust in 2008 and in June 2017 he will have served nine years, the maximum amount of time a staff governor can be in post before stepping down. Simon talks about his experience…

The three-day event, held in conjunction with ARCH recovery college and Durham University, is open to trust staff (reduced rate available), service users (bursary available) and guests from across the country. The event will include presentations from a number of guest speakers, workshops and mindfulness and spiritual activities.

Being a staff governor has been very rewarding and I’ve taken pride in making sure directors are held to account for the safety and quality of the services the Trust provides.

Having a mix of staff, public and appointed governors ensures a well-rounded view and challenges the Board to maintain high standards.

I spent much of my first term of office getting to know the role, with the support of the Trust secretary’s team and a mix of internal and external training.

I’ve got to know and worked with the Trust executive leadership team and have seen a vast improvement in Trust buildings and the services provided. The involvement of experts by experience is growing, as is their influence, and the recovery focus is becoming more established. I’m proud that governors have helped to shape, influence and promote all these areas.

Colin Jay, head of chaplaincy, said: “We are thrilled to have some high profile national speakers coming to Durham for this event in addition to our own staff members and experts by experience. This will be a really exciting exploration of the vital contribution of spirituality to recovery.”

Clinical staff across the Trust are taking part in mindfulness courses with their service users in mind.

Jo Cromarty, mindfulness team manager, West Park Hospital, Darlington, said: “As well as taking part in mindfulness courses for personal reasons, perhaps experiencing repeated episodes of depression or stressed by caring for someone with mental ill health, many clinical staff take part in a course to develop their working knowledge and experience of mindfulness. This insight helps them consider which of their service users would benefit from taking part in a course themselves.”

Mindfulness courses are held across the Trust for staff; courses are also held for service users and members of the public who can self-refer.

Courses include a taster session, eight weekly sessions and a one-day session with a followup day of mindfulness with further sessions several times a year.

Following the appointment of mindfulness teachers for Trust staff Amanda McGough, Matilda Bucknill and Hannah Greenheld, the team is now running additional courses across the Trust in more locations including Stockton, Malton, York and Selby.

Helping people. Every day is different, you never know what the next enquiry is and what the outcome will be.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

Working in a library! I love every aspect of library work; dealing with people and helping them find the right information to help them in their work.

What was your first job, where and what did it involve?

I was a library assistant for Cleveland County Libraries, carrying out shelving, issuing books, returning books, running playgroups for toddlers and coffee mornings.

Who’s had the greatest influence on your career?

Carol McIntos, the librarian who appointed me. We’re still friends 28 years later.

What is your best childhood memory?

Holidays in Cornwall or climbing Saltburn cliffs.

Whose picture did you have pinned on your wall as a teenager?

A-ha!

How do you like to spend your leisure time?

Reading - what a surprise! Or boot camp.

Trust staff at the NELA awards event

Three colleagues were named as winners at the prestigious North East NHS Leadership Recognition Awards (NELA) held earlier this year.

If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be and why?

The signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. This had such a huge impact on Europe and still does today. In a previous job I looked after a college military archive.

What was the last book you read?

I’ve just finished two; Simon Clark ‘Vampyrrhic’ (about vampires in Whitby) and Lee Child ‘Make Me’.

Where did you spend your last holiday?

Venice - lived it and loved it!

What is your main ambition in life?

To help people.

Thomas Hurst, ward manager, Overdale, Roseberry Park, Middlesbrough was named as ‘emerging leader’ award winner; Mani Krishnan, consultant psychiatrist, mental health services for older people, Teesside was announced as ‘inspirational leader’ award winner and Lisa Taylor, head of service, offender health, Roseberry Park, Middlesbrough was awarded the ‘inclusive leader’ award.

Congratulations to the Kaizen promotion office (KPO) which was shortlisted for the ‘team outstanding achievement’ award.

First British Psychological Society Fellowship Coleen Mercer-Quinn (pictured), who recently retired as a highly specialist clinical/counselling psychologist, Lakeside community mental health team, Middlesbrough, has become the Trust’s first member of staff to be awarded the British Psychological Society (BPS) Fellowship.

Coleen was awarded the Fellowship, the highest title given by the BPS, in recognition of her significant contribution to the advancement and communication of psychological knowledge.

Coleen said: “Being granted a BPS Fellowship is a first for TEWV and a personal success for me. The award recognises my contribution to the advancement or communication of psychology in a national arena.

“We have to do things smarter, do more with less and without compromising on excellent patient care or increasing staff fatigue; forward-thinking is key to this.”

Purposeful and productive community services (PPCS) It’s a year since we launched our PPCS programme, the largest and most significant initiative the Trust has attempted in recent years.

Caseload management

The results speak for themselves – waiting times have dramatically reduced and since September the teams are consistently meeting their targets. No-one waits more than nine weeks for an appointment and most young people (87%) are seen within four weeks.

The aim is to make sure that clinical staff have manageable caseloads and that they are providing the level of care and support that individual service users need. We have introduced tools that assist with this and standard processes that help staff manage their diaries.

There have been challenges along the way but we are starting to see the benefits, including a reduction in our waiting times (particularly in children and young people’s services).

Creating cells and introducing daily huddles

Twiddlemuffs and forgetme-nots

Knaresborough Women’s Institute has knitted Twiddlemuffs and forget-menot flowers to provide sensory stimulation for people with dementia. Occupational therapists at Alexander House, Harrogate will distribute the flowers to patients during Dementia Awareness Week in May to show that people with dementia are not forgotten.

Malodeon cinema room now open for patients A new cinema has opened on Mallard Ward, Ridgeway, Roseberry Park, Middlesbrough giving patients the chance to socialise more and enjoy a better quality of life.

The transformation of an empty room into the colourful ‘Malodeon’ cinema, complete with red cinemastyle chairs and stage curtains, was inspired by ward manager Sharon Walker and led by Steven Coates, healthcare assistant.

Films from the past are shown at Malodeon to help stimulate memory and reminiscence, and

patients and staff on the low security inpatient ward for men over 55 helped design the cinema’s theme and style; colourful wall art includes a popcorn seller, usher, ticket booth and Charlie Chaplin.

Steven said: “The enthusiasm of patients has really shone through.

Generous donation from local business

Auckland Park Hospital, Bishop Auckland, had a donation of £400

from local hairdressers 'Capricorn Hair Design'. The hairdressers raise money every year and this year have donated the money to our wards. The money will be used to improve the hospital’s garden for patients to be able to enjoy over the summer.
