Out and about with your chairman

As the nights start to close in after a fabulous summer, it’s time to look forward to our annual Making a Difference awards. I always welcome the opportunity to hear about the excellent work you all do on a daily basis and these awards provide us with a chance to celebrate some of those achievements. If you know of a colleague or team who you feel deserves this special recognition, then look out for details of the awards nomination process which will open in October. Further details will be placed on inTouch, our social media accounts and e-bulletin.

I was pleased to see this year’s annual general and members meeting (AGM) on 18 July was so well attended and supported by members, service users and stakeholders. I was particularly proud some of our service users felt able to come forward to share their personal experiences and journeys.

It reminded us all of the difference we can make in improving people’s lives and the importance of making sure we never lose sight of our vision; placing service users at the centre of all we do.

As you may be aware, there have been a number of changes within our executive management team, with some directors moving to different posts, to ensure that we are best placed to meet our current and future operational challenges.

Elizabeth Moody, director of nursing and governance is our new deputy chief executive and Ruth Hill is the chief operating officer. Lisa Taylor joins the executive management team (EMT) as director of operations for forensic services. Our new director of operations structure for our localities includes Levi Buckley (Durham and Darlington), Tim Cate (North Yorkshire), Dominic Gardner (Teesside) and Patrick

Scott (York and Selby). David Brown has moved to TEWV EFM as managing director. Congratulations to everyone on their new appointments.

This issue is filled with some great photos from your NHS70 celebrations! I’m pleased to see how everyone came together to note this landmark, enjoying some great events whilst also reflecting on just how much our NHS has achieved. Many thanks to everyone who was involved in making this such a success.

Living thevalues Living the Values is the chairman’s award for staff who have made a difference to service users, carers and families, colleagues or other customers.

Look for the L-ref We aim to provide high quality, accessible information to help service users manage their own health and care. Part of this is giving people up-to-date, useful information, in hard copy or on our website.

We’re asking staff, patients, carers and family members, to ‘Look for the L-ref’ when it comes to patient information about our care, treatment, services and conditions. The L-reference shows that it has been created with staff and approved for use by senior colleagues.

Information with an L-reference is reviewed at least once every three years to make sure the advice is current and accurate.

Julie Jones, head of communications said “By providing leaflets with an L-reference staff can be confident they are handing out the right information, and people receiving them know they are getting Trust-approved content.”

Fighting flu - what’s your reason?

Make sure you protect yourself and others

Every year we join in the fight against flu providing free vaccinations to our staff to help protect them, their families and patients from the virus.

Last year 4,477 staff took up the vaccination and this year we want to reach even more! Our target is 75% and we’re having a big push for early vaccination in October.

We have 100 chief flu fighters, registered nurses and pharmacists who will be vaccinating colleagues across Trust sites from late

September, helping to keep staff and service users protected. Our physical healthcare teams will also be offering the vaccine to inpatients.

Even if you’re not showing symptoms you may be carrying the virus

and unknowingly spread it to others. For most people flu is unpleasant but for some it can lead to severe complications and death.”

This year we are asking staff to share their reasons for having the flu vaccination using #thatsmyreason.

New mental health hospital reaches key milestone The development of York and Selby’s new mental health hospital has reached a key milestone, as plans for the new build were formally approved by our board of directors.

The new purpose-designed 72 bed hospital will provide two adult, single sex wards and two older people’s wards - one for people with dementia and one for people with mental health conditions such as psychosis, severe depression or anxiety.

The hospital will open in early 2020.

We’re investing approximately £37m in the build of the new development.

Enabling work has already started on site and construction of the new hospital will begin in the next few months by the appointed partner Wates Construction.

We purchased the land earlier this year for £3m following planning permission on the site which was granted by City of York Council in December.

Plans for a new mental health community hub in Selby

What the new hub may look like

Plans have been given the green light for a new mental health community hub in Selby.

Our board of directors approved the outline business case for a new community hub in Selby which will provide mental health and learning disability services for adults, older people and children and young people.

The new hub will replace Worsley Court and will relocate children and young people’s services from Selby Cabin, where community mental health services are currently based.

The community hub will provide additional therapy space, improve patient access and help teams to work together more efficiently, ultimately improving patient experience.

The full business case is due in February 2019 and the new building is expected to be complete in late 2020.

Human resources staff promote dignity champions at the Trust annual general meeting

The Trust not only champions our service users’ rights; we are committed to making sure our employees are treated with dignity too. That’s why we have recently introduced ‘dignity at work champions’.

Staff champions reinforce the work of the freedom to speak up guardian, offering support and guidance to those who may be experiencing bullying or harassment and to those raising concerns about risk, malpractice or wrong doing.

Beverley Vardon-Odonkor, head of human resources and work force assurance said “We want our employees to feel able to raise any concerns as soon as possible and have confidence that they will be listened to and action will be taken. Locally based champions are on hand to offer confidential, nonjudgemental support and advice and will help to resolve issues quickly and fairly with the least negative impact upon all concerned.”

Do we promote the health and wellbeing of our staff?

Yes, definitely!

We are committed to making sure our staff feel good and function well both physically and mentally. A range of support covering mental health, musculoskeletal health (including physiotherapy) and physical wellbeing is available. We also proactively promote their health and wellbeing through initiatives including the flu vaccination programme, mindfulness sessions and spiritual retreats.

Staff, patients, families and carers celebrated the opening of the courtyard with a garden party afternoon tea which included cream cakes and scones, ice creams and lemonade.

Lilian Woods, modern matron, cut a red ribbon and unveiled an official plaque. She said “Everyone had such a lovely day and we had great feedback from families and patients alike.”

Shirley Ann Richardson, nonexecutive director, who attended the event said “Having an outdoor space can make such a difference. It's wonderful to have such lovely gardens that patients and their families can enjoy.”

Down on the farm

TEWV interns secure jobs Two interns who carried out placements in the Trust through the Project Choice supported internship programme have gone on to secure roles.

Kieren, 21, who was an intern with the supporting users team, has secured an apprenticeship with the Trust IT team.

For many, life in the country is an idyll. Somewhere to escape the rat race and have space to breathe and relax. For others, like those in the farming community, pressures resulting from long working hours, market fluctuations, livestock disease or poor harvests can take their toll.

Hany El Sayeh, acting clinical director in North Yorkshire said “Many farmers face stress which is an important contributor to mental health problems. The conservative, masculine culture associated with farming can prevent people from speaking about their feelings and seeking help.

“With levels of depression in the industry increasing and suicide rates in agricultural workers among the highest in any occupational group, it’s important that the community recognise there is help available and feel supported to access this.

“As a Trust we are committed to raising awareness among farmers. As part of this work consultant applied psychologist

Caroline Knott (from Harrogate District Hospital) recently attended the Great Yorkshire Show. As one of a panel of experts, she addressed attendees at the annual debate highlighting links between the industry and mental health. The debate opened discussions around mental health and was a helpful first step in starting to challenge the stigma which can surround mental ill health.”

Stuart, who is also 21, carried out an internship with the estates and facilities management team and has now gone on to be offered a job with 2020 Group UK doing general maintenance and labouring.

Commenting on their achievements, Sarah Tonnar, Project Choice area manager said “It’s fantastic to watch our interns grow in confidence and develop skills that will help them in future work environments. I am sure that Kieren and Stuart will go on to have very bright futures ahead of them.”

Celebrating the NHS turning 70 On 5 July the NHS celebrated its seventieth birthday. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions and to appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives.

Staff across the Trust took part in a host of activities and held events from garden parties and afternoon teas to cake sales and fun days.

Developing an accountable care partnership in Durham Tees Valley Accountable care partnership (ACP) is about improving outcomes for service users through partnership working.

In Durham Tees Valley, this involves five clinical commissioning groups* working together with the Trust on developing mental health and learning disability services, to improve quality of care across the system.

The focus is on case management, working closely with service users on their care packages to ensure they receive the support they need.

ACP isn’t about saving money or linked to financial pressures; it makes sure funding set aside for mental health and learning disability services remains within those services.

Through ACP we can provide a more streamlined system, with the Trust, North of England commissioning support unit (NECS) and clinical commissioning group (CCG) colleagues, acting as commissioners, making better use of our collective resources. This

allows us to work towards more effective contract management, with a more consistent approach towards outcomes.

Transforming healthcare in Cambodia

Students are welcomed to the hospital’s outpatient clinic.

Six students from the Trust were lucky enough to secure a place on a chance of a lifetime trip to Cambodia.

As part of a group of 16 students, the selected individuals travelled to Cambodia in July with Transform Healthcare Cambodia and have been working in the Battambang Referral Hospital.

Transform Healthcare Cambodia, originally set up on Teesside, is a UK charity providing healthcare education, training and clinical expertise to health professionals in Cambodia.

Graham Jones, director of the charity and senior lecturer in the School of Health at Teesside University said “The students worked with Dr Sivleap in her outpatient clinic every day and made a real impression.

She said they were fantastic and she learned different approaches and methods from them.”

Championing service users rights We make decisions every day; from choosing what to wear through to whether to move home.

Sometimes people with a learning disability or mental health condition lack the mental capacity to make their own decisions. The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) are designed to protect and empower individuals and make sure their freedom is not inappropriately restricted.

“Making sure people are involved in decisions about them is essential and we are committed to making sure service user’s views are heard and respected.

“Twenty three staff members across the Trust recently took part in a ‘champions’ programme to build upon knowledge and strengthen confidence, understanding and application of the legislation.

"Champions support their colleagues and help us ensure the rights of those who lack mental capacity are upheld."

Smokefree evaluation shows positive impact for patients

Sarah Talbot-Landon, public governor representing County Durham, talks about the launch of a new family visiting area in Darlington.

Visiting a mental health hospital can be a daunting experience, especially for children.

As a parent and sometimes inpatient I have first-hand experience where my children have been nervous to come and visit.

Parents want to spend time with their children during their recovery; ideally somewhere as informal and homely as possible. You lose so much when you come into hospital but you are still someone’s Mum or Dad. Being able to keep things as normal as possible when children come to visit is important.

Following extensive discussions, an area was identified within West Park Hospital in Darlington that could be adapted to create a family visiting area.

With the support of Trust staff, we were able to create a new home from home where families could meet, watch TV, cook a family meal or play in a private garden. There are even facilities where you can help your kids with their homework.

It’s been over two years since we became a smokefree Trust and a Teesside University evaluation showed that smoking rates Trustwide have reduced from 42.5% (2015/16) to 28% (2016/17).

Lesley Colley, smokefree lead, said "The findings of the evaluation are really positive, however we aren’t complacent.

This is an ongoing process with continuous work required to achieve the best possible outcomes for our service users.”

We also now have 3,116 members of staff trained to support smokers on admission to hospital and 113 smokefree champions who provide guidance and support to staff, as well as promoting key events such as Stoptober and national No Smoking Day.

Protecting personal information You may have heard about something called general data protection regulation (GDPR) which aims to give people greater control over their personal information. Personal information is information that identifies you as an individual.

AT TEWV we keep and use service user's personal information to help us deliver high quality care and treatment. We keep information like names, dates of birth and addresses as well as details of appointments, test results and planned care.

We may share personal information with other organisations involved in people’s care such as other NHS Trusts or local authorities and other specific agencies that are involved with your care.

People have the right to see the information we hold about them and can make a subject access request to see this. They also have the right to ask for mistakes to be corrected or for information to be completed.

Stomping out over medication Stopping over medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both (STOMP) is a national project to stop the over use of psychotropic medicines.

Andrew Kay, advanced practitioner from the specialist health team at Green Lane in Spennymoor said “Psychotropic medicines are sometimes given to people because their behaviour is seen as challenging but there may be other ways to help people so they need less medicine or none at all.

Over a six month period positive behaviour support plans were put in place and the medication was gradually reduced. The behaviours that were seen as “challenging to others” were monitored and the team made regular visits to Shane and those who were supporting him.

“As part of my role I developed a new system to review service user’s medication within the team, aiming to reduce this where appropriate. Over the past 12 months we have had some really good success stories including that of Shane.

“Shane is no longer prescribed psychotropic medication and his quality of life has improved dramatically. He is now looking forward to moving into a new supported living home.

“Shane is a young man who despite any formal mental health diagnosis was being prescribed the antipsychotic drug Risperidone.

“Since he stopped taking Risperidone he has been feeling “Very happy!” and wants to tell the world about STOMP!”

Celebrating the installation of the summer house

Lotto supports learning disability service Following months of information gathering and form filling, staff from Kilton View in Brotton were delighted to hear that they had been awarded £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund for a new sensory garden and summer house.

The application for funding was made by Dawn Teeley, clinical administrator who said “Kilton View is a day service for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. The service can be a busy and noisy environment and some of our service users prefer more peaceful surroundings.

“Having a summer house will mean the sensory garden can be used all year round which will make a huge difference to our clients.

“We also hope that it will act as a community hub and plan to host coffee mornings, socials and sensory and craft sessions for service users, their families and carers.”

Do you have room in your heart and home to support someone with care needs?

Under the Shared Lives scheme, paid carers offer adults with learning disabilities or a mental health conditions a place to live in their home as part of their family. This includes long and short term placements, short breaks, respite and day services.

If you consider yourself to be a caring and reliable person, with room in your home and would like to help adults to live fulfilling lives, our Shared Lives provider, Avalon, wants to hear from you. No previous care experience is necessary as full training is provided.

Carers can receive self-employed status, monthly payments and an income tax-free incentive up to £25,000.

Engaging display

New CAMHS autism assessment service A new autism assessment service is available for children and young people in County Durham and Darlington thanks to increased funding from Durham and Durham, Dales Easington and Sedgefield commissioners.

We now have increased capacity to provide comprehensive assessments for children and young people who are suspected of having a social communication disorder.

Comprehensive feedback is provided following the assessment and guidance is given on the next steps. Families are also signposted to appropriate support.

The service based in Stanley Primary Care Centre and The Holly Unit at West Park Hospital in Darlington, offers specialist screening and assessment to children and young people by a multidisciplinary team of nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, speech therapists and support workers.

If you feel that your child or a child that you are working with would benefit from screening by the team, please contact the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) single point of access on tel. 0300 123 9296.

Creating a dementia friendly space

The newly designed Acomb Garth

A project to transform Acomb Garth in York has made a real impact on the wellbeing of service users and has resulted in a 43% reduction in incidents of violence and aggression.

Acomb Garth, which provides inpatient services for older people with dementia, has been transformed to offer a relaxing, nostalgic and healing environment which is dementia friendly.

The new design focuses on themed points of interest, including a phone box with yellow pages and 1970’s phone, a bus stop style relaxation zone looking out onto fields and a café style dining room with a view of York Minster. The bedroom area has also been designed to replicate a shopping parade and includes a music shop, a general store and a newsagent.

Service user involvement is key to providing high quality services that meet the needs of those in our care.

Employees from the positive approaches team (PAT), Flatts Lane Centre, Middlesbrough, have created a display to showcase their work with service users and to inspire those attending positive approaches training to consider opportunities for involvement.

Sarah Holmes, peer trainer, said “The display is a visual representation of the work the team have done to increase service user involvement, including employing those with lived experience to co-facilitate training.

It is based on the ladder of engagement framework which explores the different degrees of patient and public participation.

“We hope to continue adding to the ladder and have plans to create another display at Lanchester Road Hospital in Durham to increase awareness and encourage service user involvement.”

Congratulations to the multi-agency team at HMP YOI Low Newton, Durham who were named winners in the Maternity and Midwifery category of the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards for their work in the development of perinatal and maternity care pathways for women in the judicial system.

Judith celebrates success at the House of Commons

Growing talent Judith Hurst, head of workforce development for the Trust attended an event at The House of Commons to celebrate apprenticeship growth. The Trust is in the top 200 businesses in the country for apprenticeship growth.

Minister Anne Milton congratulated organisations on the work that they had done in the last year implementing the apprenticeship levy.

Bake off The occupational therapy team and service users from Roseberry Park in Middlesbrough took part in this year’s Cake Fest baking a replica of one of the wards. The cake was included in a giant edible map on display outside Middlesbrough Town Hall. Once completed the cake buildings were sliced and shared with onlookers.

Productivity in mental health Paula Maddison, lead statistician and researcher, Flatts Lane Centre, Middlesbrough has been chosen to present ‘your research on productivity in mental health and how it is measured’ at the Fifth European Health Economics Association (EuHEA) PhD StudentSupervisor and Early Career Researcher Conference in Italy. The conference focuses on health economics and is a platform for PhD students to present their research and discuss this with experts in the field.
