Herthirstforknowledgedidn’tstopwithherMSN.Fara wentontopursueaPhD,focusingontheeffectsofstigma inaddictionandrecovery,atopicthatdeeplyresonatedwith herworkinaddictionmedicine.However,theCOVID-19 pandemicledhertoreassessherpriorities.“Irealizedmy immediateimpactwasneededintheclinicalfield,”she explains.AsanAddictionNursePractitioneratthetime, shewasmanagingahighcaseloadanddecidedtowithdraw fromthePhDprogramtofocusontheurgentneedsofher patients.

Withtheinabilitytotransferpatientsinneedofahigher levelofcareduetobedcapacitiesatrecipientfacilities,we areoftenfacedwithroadblocksinachievingnecessary servicesforourpatients.Thisnewcarepathwayallows appropriatepatientstogotothetertiarycarecenterand haveanecessary,time-sensitiveprocedureperformed(that wedonotprovideatourfacility),haveimmediate postoperativemonitoring,andsubsequentlyreturntoour facilitywhenstablefortheremainderoftheir hospitalization.Thisallowsourpatientstoreceivecare timelyandremainlocalforthemajorityoftheir hospitalization.
