WhileRichardLarson'searlycontributionslayinOR,he laterbecameanevangelistforeducationaltechnology (EdTech)—afieldhebelievedcouldradicallyreduce inequalityinaccesstolearning.AccordingtoElizabeth, Richard'stransitionintoEdTechwasnotapivot,buta naturalprogressionofhislifelonginterestinequityand systemsthinking.
The1990ssawtherapidemergenceofdigitaltools,and Richardsawanopportunity AsDirectorofMIT'sCenter forAdvancedEducationalServices,hespearheadedseveral ambitiousinitiatives,suchasLINC(LearningInternational NetworksConsortium),whichaimedtobringhigh-quality educationalexperiencestounderservedpopulationsacross theglobe.In2008,heandElizabethco-foundedMIT BLOSSOMS,aprojectthatcreatedinteractivevideo lessonsinscienceandmathematicsforglobalclassrooms.
“Healwayssaidthatagoodteachercouldtransformlives,” Elizabethrecalls,“butwiththerighttechnology,that teachercouldtransformthousands.”RichardsawEdTech notmerelyasatool,butasamission—tomakelearning accessible,engaging,andempoweringforall.
Bornin1943inBayside,Queens,RichardLarson experiencedachildhoodmarkedbyfrequent relocations—fromPennsylvaniatoNewJerseyto Massachusetts.Elizabethreflectsthattheseearlytransitions fueledRichard'sresilience,adaptability,andever-curious nature.BythetimehereachedNeedhamHighSchool,he wasalreadyknownforhisinquisitivemindandlovefor learning.

As Elizabeth recounts, Richard was drawn to OR not only for its intellectual challenge but for its power to improve systems that touch people's lives—transportation, emergency response, public utilities, and urban planning.

His1993electiontotheNationalAcademyofEngineering wasoneofhisproudestachievements.AsElizabethrecalls, itwasn'ttherecognitionitselfthatmatteredtoRichard—it wasthatthehonorreflectedthereal-worldvalueofhis workinpublicserviceindustries.
Tothewiderpublic,Richardbecameknownas“Doctor Queue”—amonikerreflectinghisrenownedworkon queueingtheory.Hestudiedhowpeopleexperienced waiting,notjusthowlongtheywaited.Hisfamous quote—“The psychology of queuing is more important than the statistics of the wait itself”—capturedafundamental truthaboutcustomersatisfactionandhumanexperience.

From1995through2003,RicharddirectedMIT'sCenter forAdvancedEducationalServices,whereheexpandedthe

“Hedidn'twanttoreplaceteachers,”Elizabethclarifies,“he wantedtoempowerthem.”BLOSSOMSpartneredwith educatorsworldwidetocreatelessonsthatwereculturally relevantandpedagogicallyrich.Itwasavisionofglobal educationthatwasbothpersonalandscalable.
LINC(LearningInternationalNetworksConsortium) reflectedRichard'sbeliefthatglobalcollaborationwas essentialtoeducationalequity.Underhisguidance,LINC hostedsymposia,forgedacademicpartnerships,and launchedprojectsacrossmorethan25nations.
AsElizabethexplains,“LINCwasn'tjustaproject—itwasa movement.”Itinviteduniversityleaders,policymakers,and educatorstothinkbeyondborders,usingtechnologytoreach learnerseverywhere.ForRichard,educationwasahuman right—andtechnologywasthebridge.
RichardLarsonauthoredover175scholarlyarticlesandsix books,spanningtopicsfromurbaninfrastructuretopandemic responseandsmart-energysystems.Whatdefinedhisworkwas itsusability—cityplanners,schooladministrators,andpublic agenciesreliedonhisframeworks.
