Kim Black Originals Exquisite Wood Floors For those who seek the unique

F

or the past 15 years, Kim Black has perfected her art of installing and finishing wood floors as the owner of Designer’s Touch Flooring. Now she’s proud to introduce her new line of ‘Kim Black Originals’ floors that she manufactures in her production facility in Vero Beach. Kim is well known for her expertise in customizing wood floors in different colors and textures with on site sanding and finishing. Through the years she experimented with different finishing lines to create unique styles and colors not found in the general retail market. While manufacturers were showcasing a lot of new finishes, none were quite right for the casual, beach lifestyle that is so prevalent on the Treasure Coast. “So many owners wanted a floor that looked like the driftwood they found on the beach because it would blend nicely with their light furnishings and coastal accents,” she explained. “I contacted every wood manufacturer I dealt with over the years, and I just couldn’t find the right one. Most of them had a ‘fake’ appearance about them. That’s when I set about manufacturing a driftwood floor myself!” “After spending several years, off and on, I finally figured out the perfect recipe to achieve the gray color I wanted” she continued. “It’s the unique color found in water-logged, sun-kissed driftwood. I have found two types of clients for this color of flooring; customers that prefer a very clean, sophisticated look where the wood selected has no knots, and those who want lots of knotty character to create a more casual, beach appearance. Both designs make their own personal statement!” The Driftwood collection is part of the ‘Kim Black Originals’ line of pre-finished flooring designed and manufactured locally for the discerning client. “I work directly with homeowners or with their interior designer or architect,” she explained. “We pride ourselves on working with other professionals to give the homeowner the exact floor they envision. We create their custom floor and ship it to them if they are out of town or deliver the finished flooring to their job site ready for installation.” ‘Kim Black Originals’ also custom finishes stair treads and risers to ensure that the stairwell matches the custom flooring. The same is true with wood ceilings, beams, paneling, back splashes and decorative wall accents. “Anything the customer, architect or interior designer can dream up, we can produce” she said with a smile. “I truly love what I do and I’m passionate about my work. That’s why your custom ‘Kim Black Originals’ floor will be a one of kind statement for my clients with exquisite taste.” Up until a few weeks ago only a few designers, architects and customers had even seen the driftwood flooring. Kim is always happy to bring a sample to you within the Treasure Coast area or other parts of Florida, or mail samples to those outside of Florida. The only place to see a full-scale floor sample of the ‘Kim Black Originals’ driftwood floor is in her showroom at Designer’s Touch Flooring at 1715 Old Dixie Hwy in Vero Beach. Stop in today to take or look or call Kim at 772-978-9111 for a private showing and consultation. Volume 21 • Issue 3

The Wabasso Bridge To Disney

S

By: Ruth Stanbridge, County Historian

ince Disney's Vero Beach Resort opened in 1995 it has brought guests from around the world who cross over the Wabasso bridge for their first glimpse at the ocean. Few know the historical link that Disney has to Wabasso that dates back to the years just before Disney World was completed. The connection goes all the way back to the 1880's. In those days a boating trip down the Indian River Lagoon was a dangerous and challenging adventure. Towns and people were few and far between. One of the landmarks along the Indian River seen on the 1887 Coastal map was an Ais Indian midden call Two Dollar Bluff. The Bluff stood tall along the western shoreline and remnants still exist at the approach to the Wabasso Bridge. The bridge really began as a dock built to provide the families of Captain Frank Forster and Stephen Michael a place to tie up the boats when they crossed the Indian River Narrows to the mainland. In the late 1880's, very few people lived in the area of Orchid or along the Orchid-Narrow Road (now the south end of Jungle Trail). When the Florida East Coast Railway came in the early 1890s the Wabasso Dock became the only means for delivery of citrus, pineapples, and winter vegetables from Orchid Island, to the railroad and to market. Land sales on Orchid Island were not only promoted by Captain Forster from his homestead at Orchid, but he had an agreement with Henry Flagler to furnish citrus and other fresh vegetables to the Flagler hotels by way of this “new” rail line. By 1925 and through the “roaring 20's” the development on Orchid Island across from Wabasso grew until it was obvious a bridge was needed. In 1928, a narrow wooden bridge was in place. The river channel located on the Orchid side of the River needed a “swing” bridge and a bridgetender. This “swing” opened for the boats plying the Intracoastal Waterway. The 24

bridgetender’s house sat in the middle of the River on the north side of this very narrow two-lane bridge. A turnwheel was used to open the metal swing bridge and was located on the span between the house and the shoreline of Orchid Island. In the late 1960's, as plans were being made to build a “modern” causeway and a new high-rise “arch” bridge over the river channel, a fire broke out and destroyed a large section of the old Wabasso bridge. For several months the only way to cross the river was via a “pontoon” bridge from the World War II era as the transportation corridor. The floating bridge was utilized the new Wabasso Bridge (CR 510) was completed. It was about that time that Florida's Magic Kingdom was constructing a small railroad to encircle the theme park. They needed a draw bridge over a canal from the lagoon to the boatyard where the ferries were serviced. They heard about the Florida Department of Transportation replacing an old swing bridge in Wabasso and decided to check it out. After careful inspection, the Disney engineers decided they could salvage it. They bought it from the DOT and cut it up into smaller sections. The old bridge parts were then loaded on barges and towed to shipyard in Tampa. It was then painstakingly build to Disney's high standards and put into use. Today millions of passengers from around the world ride the Main Street Railroad daily without a thought about the history that links Wabasso to Disney. Now as you cross over the high “arch” of the Wabasso Bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway, your vista includes Orchid Island, the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and the Disney Vero Beach Resort. And as you take the railroad around the Magic Kingdom theme park you cross over the old Wabasso swing bridge. It seems that fate has forever connected the Wabasso Bridge to Disney in the beautiful circle of life. Volume 21 • Issue 3

Vero Beach Pirate Fest to be held July 29-31 P

ut on yer finest Corsair clothes and swagger down t' th' annual Corsair fest! Fellow pirates will gather at Riverside Park Fri-Sat July 29-31 fer three days o' fun frivolity and shenanigans.

July 31st marks the 301st anniversary of the sinking of the 1715 Treasure Fleet right off our shores. More than a thousand men lost their lives when a violent hurricane tossed all eleven ships against the jagged coral reef splintering them on contact. Millions of silver and gold coins, bars and treasure sank to ocean floor and remained buried in the sand for 250 years. Salvage efforts have been ongoing since the 1960’s and pieces of the 1715 fleet are still recovered to this day. Held under the cool shade canopy of 300 year old oak trees that stood on this site back in 1715; the Vero Beach Pirate Fest will be commemorate that fateful weekend. The park will be transformed into a pirate encampment with historical and living history reenactments, various themed and supporting vendors, interactive games, costume contests and activities, treasure hunts, live music, mermaids and entertainment for all ages. It will 32

also showcase exhibits of art, authentic weaponry, artifacts and treasure displays by world famous treasure hunters, artists and authors in a 3-day, family-friendly environment for all ages. Beneath these mighty oaks, you can browse the works and wares of some of the finest pirate themed and maritime artists from across the region, as well as that of period correct merchants, nautical, tropical and retail vendors in addition to a great selection of food and beverage. The Vero Beach Chamber of Commerce established the Vero Beach Pirate Festival as a signature event to boost tourism during the slower summer months. Last year’s inaugural event brought in 14,300 guests and with participating pirate ‘krewes’ coming from around the state, they are expecting more than 20,000 this year. Your attendance supports the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association in obtaining safety supplies for our beaches. Visit www.verobeachpiratefest.com for a complete schedule of events. Volume 21 • Issue 3

Vero Beach Museum of Art’s Summer Exhibition is Out of This World!

elected from the NASA art collection at Kennedy Space Center, Out of this World: The Art and Artists of NASA provides visitors with an opportunity to view 71 works of art by some of America’s most well-known contemporary artists, on view now through September 25, 2016 in the Museum’s Holmes Gallery. While NASA’s Art Program began soon after the United States’ mission to place satellites in orbit and eventually “put a man on the moon,” most people are unaware of its existence. From its early history, the agency saw art making as a way of communicating the accomplishments and excitement of space exploration to the American public. Ranging from abstraction to illustration, the exhibition features art by Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Stan Stokes, Andy Warhol, William Wegman, Jamie Wyeth, and many more. Summer admission fees apply. Visit the Museum’s website www.verobeachmuseum.org for more information. Summer hours: Closed Mondays; Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am – 4:30 pm; and Sundays, 1 pm – 4:30 pm. The Vero Beach Museum of Art is located at 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, Florida 32963.

I

t's been a long time coming but The Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce proudly announced the opening of the Pelican Porch Visitor Center last April.

Located in the heart of Sebastian at the intersection of US One and Main St., the Pelican Porch Visitor Center has undergone extensive renovations and remodeling, with a newly added porch, with rocking chairs facing the Indian River Lagoon. Funded by the business members, community organizations, Indian River County Tourist Development Council and individuals throughout the Sebastian River Area, the Pelican Porch Visitor Center provides a resource center for visitors and tourists, and connects the businesses with the Community. Serving as the “front door to the community”, the Chamber’s Visitor Center is designated as the official Visitor Center for the National Scenic Byway Program for the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway. Additionally the Pelican Porch Visitor Center is one of thirty “Certified Travel Information Centers” for Visit Florida, the official tourism and travel agency for the State of Florida. The public is welcome to check out the viewfinder recently installed on the porch, overlooking the lagoon, and to sit and relax in one of the rocking chairs while reading local tourism and travel information! 38

Experience a Turtle Dig In Vero Beach

I

by Kendra Cope, Sea Turtle Coordinator

n 2005 Indian River County implemented a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to help protect and enhance beaches as sea turtle nesting habitats. With this implementation began the IR Sea Turtle Program and daily county-wide sea turtle nest monitoring. For over 11 years we have been able to use long-term nesting trends to identify predator issues, beachfront lighting issues, and human impacts along the coast and work with the appropriate entities to improve these issues. In 2016, the county began the Turtle Friendly Business Program (TFB) to help reach the goals described in the HCP. Each of these beachfront businesses have volunteered to follow the City of Vero lighting ordinance to protect adults and hatchling sea turtles, promote local sea turtle activities, provide educational information to guests, and bring their own personality to sea turtle conservation. A new educational program begins in 2016 and is being promoted by the TFBs (Vero Beach Hotel and Spa, Holiday Inn Beachside, Ocean Grill, Costa D’ Este, Shark Bait, and Bouche Brothers). During nesting season you will see hundreds of nests marked off with signs, stakes, and ribbons along the beach. Once the nests hatch, the contents are dug up and evaluated. This allows scientists and decision makers to understand how well the beaches are incubating sea turtle nests and if these nests are experiencing any impacts that can be managed. Nests that hatch in front, and in between, the TFBs will be evaluated for the public through an experience called a Turtle Dig. The public will learn about sea turtle biology, threats to their survival and ways to help while watching the nest be evaluated by IR Sea Turtle Program staff and volunteers. If straggler hatchlings are found stuck in nests , guests will get to watch them be released into the ocean. These experiences will take place three days after a nest hatches at 8am. Guests will meet at Sexton Plaza and be guided to the turtle dig location. To find out when a next Turtle Dig will occur please visit the IRC Coastal Facebook page @IRCCoastal.
