Studies show, coastal air is different than air found farther inland and has a beneficial effect on your health and well-being. Coastal air is charged with negative ions causing the body to absorb oxygen more easily. Serotonin levels are more equalized which decrease stress levels and improves mood, helping you sleep more deeply and peacefully.

Walking On Driftwood

oastal Living is reserved for a small percentage of the population who are seduced by the sea, the sand and the casual beachside lifestyle. Living on the Treasure Coast, residents are never more than a short drive to the beach where they search for shells and driftwood to decorate their homes. Kim Black, wood floor designer and owner of Designer’s Touch Flooring has seen this trend throughout her 16 years in the flooring business. “My clients always have a beach treasure displayed in their home” explained Kim. “I wanted to develop a custom wood floor that emulated the look and feel of natural driftwood. That way they can bring the beach inside their home forever!” Starting with the search for just the right wood, Kim went to work developing a custom recipe that highlights the gray, blue, and whitewash hues found on wood that has drifted in the ocean for years. “It definitely took hours and hours to come up the right recipe but I finally did it! The response has been overwhelming and the local designers and contractors are all very excited about it” she continued. "Only a few architects, designers and customers have seen it because it’s brand new and we have already taken a couple of orders. We are so excited about our newest floor named ‘Driftwood’ and hope to make a lot of people happy!” Call Kim today at 772-978-9111 for a private showing of the all-new ‘Driftwood’ flooring! 14

Remembering the Four Chaplains and the Sinking of Dorchester

he shiny granite monument that stands in a reflecting pond on the edge of Sebastian's Riverview Park, honors four incredible men who selflessly gave their lives so that others may live. The USAT Dorchester left New York Harbor on January 23, 1943 bound for Greenland. It carried 902 officers, servicemen and civilian workers. On February 2, one of the accompanying Coast Guard cutters detected the presence of a submarine but couldn’t pinpoint its position. The CO of the Dorchester ordered the men to sleep in their clothing with life jackets nearby as a precaution The men were frightened and couldn’t sleep. Four US Army Chaplains circulated among them to ease their tensions and calm their fears. Those chaplains were Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. john P. Washington, Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Reformed. Early in the morning of Feb. 3rd the torpedo struck. The explosion destroyed the boiler room and electric supply and released suffocating clouds of steam and ammonia gas. The ship was sinking fast. Dazed men ran topside to the lifeboats. The four chaplains stayed with the sailors attending to the injured and assisting in loading the lifeboats. Many had forgotten their lifejackets. The chaplains located a supply in a locker on deck and passed them out. When they ran out, they gave up their own. Only two of the lifeboats were successfully used in abandoning the ship. Sailors jumped into the icy waters and clung to rafts or floated alone. The four chaplains remained on the ship, standing together, arms linked, heads bowed in prayer, as the Dorchester slipped beneath the waves. Nearly 700 men lost their lives in one of the greatest naval tragedies of the war. The heroic efforts and ultimate sacrifice of the four Chaplains from different faiths remains one of the most touching stories of that era and their legacy lives on. 28

Kashi Ashram Celebrates 40 years of Interfaith in Sebastian

I

n 1976 Ma Jaya, a spiritual teacher from Brooklyn, founded Kashi, an interfaith community and spiritual destination, on 80 acres along the St. Sebastian River. Students and seekers from all walks of life, race, and religion visit Kashi to feel a deep spiritual essence in this serene and peaceful location. Ma Jaya embodied the teachings of her guru, Neem Karoli Baba, who taught that we should “feed everyone” and the Christ, who inspired her to teach all ways, for all ways are His. For decades she led her students on the path of spiritual enrichment, service and conscious awareness though meditation, yoga, healthy diet and prayer. Ma Jaya passed on April 13, 2012, but her legacy lives on at Kashi Ashram. The community has housing for full time residents, lodging for visitors, studio space available for rent for group retreats and the Kashi School of Yoga, offering teacher trainings and classes of Ma Jaya’s own Kali Natha Yoga, as well as other yoga practices and workshops. The Eco Project raises chickens and Nigerian Dwarf goats and produces goat milk soaps. The Sustainable Kashi farm utilizes the principles of permaculture in growing organic vegetables to feed residents, guests and the community. Their organically grown produce is sold to guests at the monthly Kashi Sunday Market, held the 2nd Sunday of each month, from October through May. Local vendors at the Market sell candles, handsewn clothing, jewelry, original art and aromatic lotions. Chef Swami Rudra’s homemade cinnamon buns and the amazing organic lunch are very popular! While you’re there, be sure to take a peaceful stroll around the sacred Ganga pond and marvel at the shrines and temples representative of many faiths. Dinners are open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 5PM, and Ma’s India Gift Store is open from 5PM to 6PM. Everyone is invited to visit Kashi on Interfaith Saturdays to see firsthand what the community is all about. Spend the afternoon and go home feeling satisfied, enlightened and refreshed! 3:00pm 4:00pm 4:00pm 5:00pm 6:30pm

Melody Lane Public Fishing Pier Opens in Ft. Pierce

T

he City of Ft. Pierce and the Florida Inland navigation District worked together to design, fund and build a beautiful new fishing pier on the Ft. Pierce waterfront just south of Marina Square. The ADA accessible fishing pier is 10 feet wide, 215 feet long and includes a 26 x 16 foot landing. The pier also includes bicycle racks, lighting, tackle disposal units and environmentally friendly Thru-Flo interlocking deck-covering panels to encourage sea grass growth. A new fish cleaning table is located adjacent to the pier. The music theme on the arch and benches ties in with its Melody Lane location. The first local radio station, WIRA, was on the waterfront and gave Melody Lane its name. It began operating and broadcasting shortly after WW11. City officials estimate more than 9,000 people will enjoy the pier each year for fishing and as a viewing area for birds and wildlife that gather amongst the City’s recently-completed storm protection island system, 4th of July fireworks and annual boat parades. “The Melody Lane Fishing Pier will be a place our citizens and guests can gather for a day of recreation, to sight see or to just sit back and relax,” explained Mayor Linda Hudson. We look forward to having generations of families enjoy the pier for many years to come.” 50
