Fort Pierce Honors The Art, Lives and Times of The Florida Highwaymen
he City of Fort Pierce is launching a self-guided cultural trail and website to commemorate the lives and times of 26 African Americans who initiated a unique enterprise in the late 1950s - painting Florida’s beautiful landscapes on cheap wall board. The artists framed their works with door and baseboard molding and sold them from car trunks along the east coast. “The Highwaymen”, these mostly self-taught Florida Artists Hall of Fame inductees are believed to have created more than 200,000 paintings. Their works are displayed in the Florida Governor’s Mansion, the White House and around the world. The self-guided Highwaymen Heritage Trail’s 10 stops include an incredible mosaic Poinciana tree with 26 engraved plaques and a 19’ tall obelisk honoring the artists. TheHighwaymenTrail.com website features fascinating stories, beautiful artwork and video accounts of tragedy, achievement and success. Two grants from the Florida Humanities Council and matching funds from the City of Fort Pierce facilitated this 3-year project. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony for the trail, followed by an art show and family-friendly festival will be held on February 20, 2016 in beautiful Fort Pierce. Visit TheHighwaymenTrail.com website to learn more about the Highwaymen story and contributions of African Americans to art and culture.

McKee Botanical Garden Holiday Model Railroad
T
he “Train Guys” continue a tradition at McKee Botanical Garden, which began about 12 years ago with a large scale model train layout in the Hall of Giants. Only one of the original three “train guys” remain and two more have replaced those original two. Pete Tyson has been the lead on the annual project for the past six years with help from Eric Menger (one of the originals) and more recently, Tom Hadden. The display has moved to the Education Building as a larger venue. This year, during Holidays at McKee on December 21, 22 & 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and Nights of Lights December 28, 29 & 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm visitors will be able to roam the beautifully illuminated gardens and view the big train display in the Education Building. Four trains run on three levels over 200 feet of solid brass track. They are easy to see as the scale is “G” – popular in many garden layouts around the country and the world and first introduced by the German company, LGB (Lehman Gross-Bahn). All the trains at McKee, save one, are German made LGB products. The scale is actually 1/22.5. It takes about 250 man-hours to set up the display, starting with the wooden bench work made of 2’x 4’ and 2’x 2’ lumber and plywood platforms. The mountains and hillsides are created differently each year with cardboard strips glued together one at a time, and the whole structure is then draped and glued with black felt. Next, the various colored landscape materials are meticulously glued to the felt by hand. Buildings have been assembled from kits or scratch built from plans by the “Train Guys” and vehicles, people, and animals populate the alpine village, small town, and farm. There are two large bridges, one made of wood, a long trestle as well as six tunnels with portals made of timber or granite. Locomotives run on track power and include three steam engines, a diesel, and numerous passenger and freight cars. Be sure and stop by, visit, ask questions, and enjoy! Bring the kids!!!! 16

Brewery Coming to Downtown Vero
I
f there’s one person who has the vision for historic downtown clearly etched in his mind, it’s Michael Rechter. Rechter recently purchased the old post office on 14th Ave in the heart of the art district. The block structure will soon be brought to life as a destination local brewery! “We plan on revamping the building to make it something fun and new to blend in with the artistic flavor of downtown" said Rechter. "We’ll open it up to the lot next door to create an urban outdoor area where patrons can dine while listening to live music. Inside the brewery will have a full kitchen and dining area.” Rechter is a visionary with a proven track record in Vero Beach. He started investing in Vero in 2005 when he purchased and renovated the KMart Plaza on US1. In 2007 he purchased the Vero Bowl Plaza and turned an obsolete bowling alley into a state of the facility. The antiquated theatre was leased and reborn as the thriving Majestic Theatre, and he brought in a pool hall, restaurants, gyms and shopping. Now, the time has come for Rechter to bring his vision and expertise to historic downtown Vero Beach.

Creative Energy Flows in Historic Downtown Vero Beach
T
here’s been a quiet resurgence of businesses moving into historic downtown Vero Beach, generating a seductive new energy. The vibe is hip and cool with art galleries, sidewalk cafÊs, casual and upscale dining, beer and wine bars, antique shops and trendy boutiques. Historic downtown has become the place to dine, stroll and soak up a bit of Vero Beach history. Main Street Vero Beach Main Street Vero Beach (MSVB) has worked diligently for the past two decades to revitalize, preserve and create a vibrant downtown community. A grass roots effort brought about the ever-popular Downtown Friday, which is held on the last Friday of the month from 6-9pm along 14th Ave south of St Road 60. The street is closed for one big block party that brings residents and visitors alike out to mingle with friends, dance to bands, shop for unique items from street vendors and eat specialty food from an array of food trucks. Many downtown shops stay open during Downtown Friday and the nearby restaurants are usually filled to capacity for those who have worked up a healthy appetite by walking, talking and dancing the evening away! One of the newest additions to the block party is the Downtown Friday Fun Ride! A six mile bicycle ride departs at 5:30pm in the parking lot at 1975 12th Ct (across from Jetson Ap38

pliances, between the “Twin Pairs”) and arriving back at downtown Friday in plenty of time to party! Call Ride Coordinator Dave Hunter 561-375-1836 for more information. The Arts and Crafts Village will be set up around the Masonic Lodge along 20th Street and down 14th Ave from 1-5pm on Saturday afternoons. Artists and craftsmen will be selling their one of kind artwork. The galleries and restaurants will be open so you can spend the afternoon and then stay for dinner and music at one of the downtown eateries. during the monthly gallery stroll. The Cultural Council of Indian River County is also located in historic downtown Vero Beach. They provide avenues for artist and nonprofit networking, information sharing and collaboration. They are also the driving force behind the Art in Public Places movement, which showcases local talent in Indian River County public buildings. Both the Indian River County Courthouse and the Indian River County Administration Complex display local artwork on a rotating basis. Let’s Not Forget the Past There’s plenty of reason for the nomenclature of historic downtown Vero Beach. Several of the buildings in the district are on the National Register of Historic Place and are well worth the visit. The Heritage Center, built in 1935, is in the heart of the district. Its main hall is a popular rental venue for community events, meetings, family celebrations and weddings. It also houses the Citrus Museum, which showcases the history of the Indian River citrus industry through photographs and artifacts. Take home a memento from their gift shop offering unusual items from the days of old. The Vero Beach Train station is a time capsule of yesteryear and the Vero Beach Women’s Club is full of pioneer lore. Hopefully, someday in the

future, the historic Theatre Plaza will be brought back to life, but for now it remains closed with just the marquee pleading for a revival. And what about the future? The buzz around town is all about the proposed Cultural Arts Village. It’s purpose is to create an environment attractive to residents, visitors, and creative professionals of all types, where visiting public and the cultural community can meet, learn, entertain and interact in the promotion and appreciation of the visual, culinary and performing arts. A charrette was held in September where local architects, regional planners and the cultural arts leadership team tossed around their ideas of expanding the art district for several blocks to include working studios,

galleries, concert venues and more. The three-day session was open for public input where ideas were discussed. While the cultural art village is still in the first phase of planning, the excitement and energy flowed from all those who attended. Hopefully that energy will manifest into a working artisan village attracting artists who want to live and work within the district as well as visitors who want to enjoy the artistic infusion of art, entertainment and dining. You too can become involved in planning this new concept. Call the Cultural Council of Indian River County for information including updates on future planning sessions at 772-770-4857 or visit them online at www.cultural-council.org.

These art experiences are centered on the process and not the final product because the simple act of creating has a positive impact on our emotions, attitudes and well being Afternoon at the Museum is customized for those living with dementia and their caregivers. A museum docent will present a work of art from the a current exhibition and the participants create their own interpretation in a friendly, non judgmental environment. The Intergenerational program connects troubled teens and seniors through art. A museum instructor invites teens from the The Vero Beach Boy’s Ranch to join senior volunteers in creating an artistic projects. The collaboration between the two impacts both generations in a positive way. A dance class is designed to help those dealing with impaired movement functions from Parkinson's disease, tremors or brain injuries. No dance experience is necessary to take the class, which offers breath work, balance exercises and choreographed movements to assist the impaired in celebrating the joy of mobility.

What Comes After A Breast Cancer Diagnosis?
L
ittle compares with the shock and disbelief of a breast cancer diagnosis. The patient is hit with a million and one thoughts and questions while facing her or his own mortality. Breast cancer most often affects women: one in eight each year. Fortunately when detected and treated early, the survival rates are exceedingly high. Still the navigation of treatment and emotions is overwhelming and confusing. That’s when the support of fellow cancer survivors is so valuable. They’ve walked the walk, came out the other side and are willing to talk others through their journey. Friends After Diagnosis is a support group for breast cancer patients, survivors, family and friends. It is a safe and comfortable place to open up about treatments and survival. The idea for a support group occurred to breast cancer survivor Lin Reading in 2010 after her mother Kathy’s disease returned for a third time, and she learned that no such group existed in Indian River County. During the same time period, survivor Fran Basso met a four-year survivor who continued to face cancer-related challenges, and the two agreed to volunteer at the Indian River Medical Center Cancer Center to provide support for others. Lin met Fran and the two combined their efforts. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday afternoon of the month at the Indian River Medical Center (IRMC), the first Saturday morning of the month at Sebastian River Medical Center and the third Saturday morning at IRMC. The meetings are open conversations among participants expressing their feelings and fears about life as a survivor or as somebody supporting a survivor. Since breast cancer surgery can reduce upper-body range of motion, the organization now partners with S.T.A.R. Pilates in Vero Beach to offer the Pilates for Pink class free of charge twice per month to breast cancer survivors. Pilates for Pink focuses on stretching and movement designed to help improve range of motion, abdominal strength and general self-confidence. Call S.T.A.R. Pilates at 772 -205- 7969. Friends After Diagnosis is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides its programming at no cost. See the event calendar at www.friendsafterdiagnosis.org for times of meetings and further information.

Canada’s 3rd Largest Scheduled Carrier Chooses MLB as 1st Florida Gateway Porter Airlines announces non-stop flights from Toronto starting December 19th
F
amous for its premium passenger experience, Toronto-based Porter Airlines announced that it has selected Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) as its first entry into the Florida market. According to MLB Executive Director Greg Donovan, AAE, this is a sign of things to come, and reflects the airport’s first fulfillment of a commitment to bring more international tourism to the region. “Canada is our top visitor market,” said Donovan. “We can promise Porter passengers a warm and enthusiastic welcome at the same high level of customer service they have come to expect.” The weekly seasonal flights will commence Saturday, December 19th from Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ), arriving at MLB around noon, which is perfectly timed for check-in at local hotels. “Passengers can be on the beach in less than 10 minutes,” said Donovan. Billy Bishop Airport is an experience in itself, located on an island in the heart of Toronto and accessible via the world’s shortest ferry and a gleaming new pedestrian tunnel. Donovan said that local travelers will appreciate the shorter travel time to Toronto’s central business and entertainment districts, avoiding congested colossal airports. Travelers in both directions will benefit from the simplicity of Porter’s Toronto hub, with connecting service available for these Canadian cities: Montreal, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Timmins and Windsor. Orlando Melbourne International Airport is the closest airport to cruises at Port Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center with easy access to beautiful beaches and the world’s most popular theme parks. Melbourne Airport has developed marketing partnerships with the local TDCs, including the Indian River Chamber of Commerce featuring Vero Beach, one of the top destinations for Canadian winter visitors to Florida. Introductory prices start at $392 Cdn. for a round-trip. Flights are now available for booking at www.flyporter.com. 54

TAXI PLEASE...
riving to the airport can be tedious and aggravating to say the least. You spend time and gas to get there, find a parking garage, then hop a shuttle to the terminal before you even deal with the airport TSA! Upon your return you reverse the process but add a big parking fee! It’s so much easier to call A1A Taxi service and have Neil Lagin pick you up at your door, drop you off at the terminal and be there for your return. When you add up the costs, it really isn’t much different but it sure is a whole lot easier. He’ll take you to local doctors appointments and drive you home after you’ve had a little too much to drink! Call Neil at A1A taxi 772-5593249 next time you need a ride.

Why We Should Save America’s Everglades By : 2015 Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades Summer Interns : Raiana Oliveira and Jacquelyn Delp
“There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them.” - Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author of the famous River of Grass and long-time advocate of Everglades restoration
The Everglades
There truly is no other place like the Everglades, where you will find such a unique combination of life and habitats. Historically, it was a region where rivers turned into lakes and lakes turned into extensive marshland; a mosaic of creeks, ponds, swamps, pinelands, and hardwood hammocks, which led to the magnificent clear water of Florida Bay. According to the National Parks Service, Everglades National Park is home to more than 360 species of birds, nearly 300 species of fish, over 40 species of mammals, and it is the only habitat in the world where both alligators and crocodiles coexist. Unfortunately, this marvelous ecosystem faces an alarming future threat.
Current Threats Due to Sea Level Rise
Natural systems in South Florida have been heavily disturbed for almost two centuries. People have brought drainage, pollution, excessive hunting, exotic plants and animals, and many other problems. Now the Everglades faces its biggest challenge. According to NOAA, Sea level is currently rising an average of 0.12 inches every year and this rate will only increase. The US Army Corps of Engineers projects a 3 to 7 inch increase by 2030 and The National Climate Assessment predicts a potential maximum of 6.6 feet rise by the end of the century. Most of Everglades National Park is at sea level, which means the park will be immensely affected in the next few decades, even when considering the most optimistic predictions. Unfortunately, sea level rise deteriorates the freshwater quality in the Everglades, destroying the habitat for the local plants and animals. Higher sea level will also make this area more susceptible to storm damage. Extinction and significantly reduced populations are likely, unless we help restore the Everglades, giving the plants and animals more time to move north.
How it Affects Us
But, why should we care? Two reasons: our economy and South Florida’s 62
www.InsideTrackAlmanac.com
drinking water are directly tied to the Everglades. According to the National Park Service, the Everglades contributed $103 Million to Florida’s economy through ecotourism in 2012. The southernmost portion of the Everglades system, Florida Bay, provides a healthy habitat for part of our profitable fishing industry, which was valued at $5 Billion by Florida TaxWatch. Both ecotourism and the fishing industry are highly dependent on a healthy Everglades. A healthy Everglades is also necessary in South Florida because it supplies freshwater to residents and tourists, but the freshwater health is jeopardized by encroaching saltwater due to sea level rise. This effect can be minimized by Everglades restoration, because one of Everglades functions is to send freshwater south to the ocean, pushing the salty ocean water away from the land. This protects our drinking water quality and the Everglades ecosystem. A win-win relationship. Currently, we over-consume freshwater and not enough can be kept in the Everglades, flowing south to push saltwater away. This results in both saltier drinking water and a saltier habitat, which kills the unique plants and animals. If more freshwater can be sent south, we can protect our drinking water and save America’s beautiful Everglades!
What Can We Do To Help?
Learn & Advocate: Get informed about the Everglades and the current policies of restoration. Talk to your politicians and share what you know about the Everglades with other people. Learn more at: www.nps.gov/ever/index.htm or www.evergladesrestoration.gov Conserve Water: Avoid long showers, turn off sprinklers during rainy days, turn off the water when brushing teeth and washing dishes. The USGS reported that the Everglades is the only freshwater source for 3 million people in South Florida. Saving water is saving the Everglades. Stop Pollution: Avoid littering while visiting the natural areas. If you see trash, please pick it up. Polluted water can harm the plants and animals. Visit the Natural Areas: The most significant action is to become a part of the Everglades. Rachel Carson, the author of Silent Spring, wrote “Man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.” To become part of the solution, we must start perceiving ourselves as a part of this incredible environment. But how can we be a part of the Everglades if we barely know what it is? Ecotourism activities include: Camping along the Kissimmee River, Fishing and boating on Lake Okeechobee, Bird watching at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Canoeing through the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Hiking at Big Cypress National Preserve, Viewing alligators in Everglades National Park, and Snorkeling in Florida Bay. Exploring nature is truly the best way to enjoy Florida. We have a remarkable ecosystem right in our backyard. From the Kissimmee Lakes to the Florida Keys, this system faces constant threats that harm the animals and plants. Visit the Everglades now, and see why it is worth saving! Volume 20 • Issue 4
