PUBLISHER’S LETTER Spring has sprung and you can see it. As I walk around our community everyone seems lighter, happier. Walking along Main St. I am greeted with smiles and hellos. I love spring! The trees have new buds and spring flowers have begun to poke through the ground. Somehow I feel like I can accomplish more. This month is a busy one for Inside Milton and Backspin. There are some great events that we are taking part in as our way of giving back. The MDHF Gala on the 28th, Inspiring Kids Today’s Healthy Heart Challenge which will be held on the 28th as well, and finally The Gravity Gives Project. I hope with the spring weather here you will feel inspired to get out and participate in some great events in the community - be sure to check out our community calendar for other great events you can participate in. I also wanted to bring to your attention Cristina Di Corte’s story. She is 22 years old and suffers from a disease called Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy (MNGIE). She is in need of a bone marrow transplant badly – information can be found @ helpcristina.org. If you are able please go to www.OneMatch.ca for info on how to donate. Cristina is not the only one in need.

Thanks so much!

Say Yes to the Dress Once you have a prospective spouse, and you’ve both agreed on a wedding date, what’s the next most important decision? What to wear, of course. It can be complicated and expensive, but really, the most vital consideration is how the dress makes you feel. If you’re still having problems, here are a few tips to help make the ultimate purchase a little easier. Fitting your figure is vital, and will make the search that much less painful, so pay attention to your shape:

HO URGLASS

— Dos: An A-line wedding dress with a dropped waist shows off your figure; pair it with a sweetheart neckline to show off your chest. Or for something a little more curvaceous, try a fitand-flare gown like a mermaid or trumpet style Don’ts: A ball gown or Empire-waist silhouette may make you look disproportioned.

Short

Waist

— Dos: A Princessline silhouette, fitted at the bodice and opening up gradually to a full skirt, elegantly elongates your figure; if you love your shoulders, try a portrait or halter neckline. A slightly dropped-waist gown will also lengthen your torso. Don’ts: A sheath will make your short waist more obvious.

Thick Waist

— Dos: An Empirewaist dress will deemphasize your waistline and give you a long, lean look. Don’ts: A Princess-line or basque waist will draw too much attention to your middle.

www.insidemilton.ca

14

Full Figure — Dos: A ball gown

will hide quite a bit, and an A-line silhouette looks great on everyone. Don’ts: A sheath will make you look heavier than you are; avoid spaghetti straps.

Pear Shape — Dos: A basque waist

or strapless ball gown will cover your bottom half and put the focus on your better half; an Empire dress will hug the tiniest part of your body and disguise your lower half. Don’ts: A sheath will be unflattering. A trumpet- or mermaid-style gown will draw attention to your bottom.

Thin

— Dos: A ball gown will make you look like a fairy-tale princess, and a sheath would be perfect for you. Don’ts: Almost all silhouettes will flatter your figure, but stay away from portrait, off-the-shoulder, or halter necklines if your collarbone is too bony.

Petite— Dos: It’s best to keep it simple. When you’re small, a big, elaborate gown can sometimes look as if it’s wearing you rather than the other way around. A sheath or A-line dress will work well. Don’ts: Almost all silhouettes will flatter your figure, though a big ball gown may overwhelm.

Consider the climate and time of year. If you’re getting married in mid-summer, go with a lighter, more breathable fabric. If your theme is a beach wedding, opt for white instead of the traditional black tux. In the winter months, a traditional tux is best. Are you planning an evening or daytime wedding? The general rule is that evening weddings or those after 6 p.m. are considered more formal. These weddings call for full dress, including tux, tuxedo shirt, cummerbund or vest, tie or bow tie, cufflinks and studs and tuxedo shoes. Daytime weddings can be less formal. Although a tux is still appropriate, some couples opt for a dressy suit with tuxedo accessories.

A special

touch here and there can really make the look your own. With info from Squidoo.com

and the tux! And we haven’t forgotten about the grooms! What you wear plays an important role, too. Choose a tuxedo that complements your bride’s gown. For instance, if it’s a traditional wedding, dress in a classic tux. If it is a modern wedding or themed wedding, then dress according to the theme and style.

Best Face – and Hair – Forward Consultations are always a good idea before deciding on a look for your wedding day hair and makeup. Bring along pictures of any hairstyles you have in mind, and don’t forget to mention if you’re wearing a veil or other headpiece. Same for makeup: bring photos of makeup styles you like for the stylist so that an entire, cohesive package can be formed. Also be sure to get plenty of beauty sleep, not only the night before you get married, but for weeks before.

Makeup Tips *

Consider having makeup applied by a professional. Schedule a trial run.

*

Exfoliate skin and follow up with a toner.

*

Foundation should blend in with your skin tone. Blend it into your neck to avoid embarrassing lines.

*

Neutral tones are the best for a daytime wedding.

*

Use an eyelash curler to make your lashes appear longer.

*

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner is a must! Brown/black will flatter both blondes and brunettes.

* To prevent clumping and flaking, make sure that your mascara is new. * Avoid a shiny face. Powder your face with loose translucent powder after you apply your foundation. Take along pressed powder for touch ups. This is especially important for your wedding pictures. *

Stay away from crème eye shadow that will collect in creases. You need some staying power, so stick with powder.

*

Apply lip liner under matte lipstick.

*

Keep your foundation light to avoid any streaking and check it outdoors or in bright light when you’re finished

Hairstyle Tips Your headpiece will play a large role in your hairstyle choice so pick it up from the bridal shop as soon as possible. Take it with you to your salon for a beauty consultation about one month before your wedding. Your stylist will then be able to determine when you should get your hair trimmed and how to style your hair to compliment your headpiece. If you need a trim, one week before your wedding is sufficient. If you’re going for a hair cut or total change, try this two to three weeks before your wedding so you have time to adjust. If you’re planning on wearing large earrings, take them along too. They may look completely different with your hairstyle and headpiece than what you imagined. Make all appointments well in advance so there are no unwelcome surprises. *

Your hair will probably be exposed to the weather more than usual. Use a conditioner or hot oil Thompson treatment.

FREE CAR CHARGER WITH

Don’t forget your bridesmaids. Let their styles compliment your own and discuss this before they make any other beauty plans.

cakes & catering: how to choose the best Yes, the clothing and vehicles and flowers are important, but the food? Food is essential, and it’s big business. Why do you think there are so many cooking and baking shows on TV these days? Choosing the perfect cake can be as stressful as finding the perfect dress, but here are a few tips to make the decision a bit easier.

Choose a Style:

Have a Realistic Budget:

Wedding cakes aren’t cheap. If you have a small budget, you’ll have to lower your expectations. Budgeting a few thousand dollars is a safe bet when looking for a cake with two or three tiers from a high-end bakery. Themed and specially designed cakes run much more. No one should go into debt for a cake, but if you want one that’s elegant and attractive, you’ll need to budget accordingly.

There are many styles used to make wedding cakes, so choose the one that best suits your needs and desires. There are layered cakes, single-tier or sheet cakes, individual mini cakes, cupcakes and even shaped and themed cakes. Many bakeries that specialize in wedding cakes have books with ideas or photos of cakes made in the past.

Do a Taste Test:

Once you’ve chosen the cake style, choose a cake flavour, and icing type. Most vendors allow you to come in for a cake testing session, to sample a variety of flavours and textures at once. You should always taste the combination before making a final decision, to make sure it’s what you want.

Get a Sketch:

A sketch should be done by the bakery before the final order is signed, ensuring that you and the vendor are on the same page and that they understand exactly what you are looking for. Without a sketch, you leave things up to interpretation that can lead to disappointment.

Now onto the catering. This is the food you and your wedding guests will dine on, so taste and quality are important. It’s worth the effort and investment to find a reliable company. Choosing the right catering services can be complicated. Following are some tips to find a topnotch catering service.

The Search:

First look for a catering service business in your area by utilizing the following resources: * * * * * * * * *

Friends and family Event managers Celebrity Chefs Club or Restaurants Franchised Caterers Caterers at local Market Internet Wedding Magazines Newspaper Classifieds

Short List:

Contact prospective caterers and ask for their rough estimate. They usually give a per-head amount for the food and an estimate on other services. Get information from all possible catering services. Depending upon the information you can make a short list of prospective caterers.

Celebrity Chefs:

It can be expensive but if you want to add some sparkle to the event, celebrity chefs offer value in abundance to your money. These chefs are experts and in demand. The best suggestion is to book them earlier so they’ll insert you in their demanding schedule.

The Visit:

Visit the short-listed caterers with one or two of your friends whose opinion you respect in cooking. Following are some of things to ask about: * Previous record, such as photographs or newspaper clippings * Background check; call a couple of previous customers * Harmony of flavours and taste of some signature dishes * Quality of service at their establishment * Temperature at which food was served * Freshness and colours of fruits and vegetables * Taste test of wine * Freshness and variety of salads * Timing of serving of various courses * Portion sizes * Willingness of establishment to make modifications * Discounts or possible price reductions

Written Contract:

After a few visits you’ll be in a position to select the right establishment to use at your reception. Now you’ll need a contract. Following are some of key points for the contract agreement: * * * * * * * *

Date, duration and venue for the reception Estimated numbers of guests Choice of food service Final menu and courses Approved wine list and open bar timing Silver ware, crockery, and glass ware Staff uniform and overtime fees Cancellation charges

Wedding

Photographer!

Choosing a photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make when planning your wedding celebration. I believe that choosing a photographer not only influences the quality of the photos you’ll have to share with future generations of family and friends, but also has a significant impact on the enjoyment of your day. I’d like to share my years of experience in the industry to help you make the best and most informed decision possible. After the day is done - and it will go by in a flash the most precious thing you’ll be left with is your memories and the photos that document the beauty, joy and relationships of one of the most important days of your lives. I often have clients say to me afterwards, “I had forgotten all about that” or “I didn’t even know you were there for that” or “when I see that photo, I remember exactly what I was thinking at that moment.” A good wedding photographer is there to make you look amazing, but we’re also there to capture the moments that you missed or that just got lost in the excitement of the day. One of the most overlooked qualities of a wedding photographer is their personality and how great a role this can play in the enjoyment of your wedding. This is why I always recommend meeting with the photographer in advance so you can get to know each other and get a sense of how they work. It is a challenging yet extremely important quality for the photographer to find a balance between taking time to create beautiful portraits and being sensitive to the needs and the comfort of you and your guests. You will be spending more time with your

photographer than any other vendor or guest on your wedding day. Their ability to make you feel comfortable and relaxed goes a long way to improving the overall mood and enjoyment of the day’s events. Another aspect to be mindful of is the choice between quantity over quality. When comparing different photographers, it’s tempting to simply compare pricing and products included in the package. You only have one chance to capture beautiful photos on your wedding day, so to ensure your satisfaction and to avoid regret, it’s always the best bet to go with the photographer whose work attracts you the most - even if you have to go with their basic package. The most important part is to capture beautiful photos on your wedding day. You can always add more prints and albums later, but you can never go back and re-shoot disappointing photos. Plus, it’s only advantageous to have extra prints and albums if you really love the photos! When viewing the photographer’s portfolio, make sure you ask to see a full wedding coverage or an actual client’s album. We photographers love to show our best “wow” images on our websites (I’m guilty of this myself) but it’s important to see how the photographer covers all aspects of the day from the candid preparation shots in the morning all the way through to the reception. It’s one thing to snap a few beautiful portraits in a photogenic venue with great light. It takes a whole different skill set to create something awe-inspiring and dramatic regardless of the location and to inspire and capture emotive moments between you and the people you love.

CAR FOR HIRE

Renting a wedding vehicle

Whether it’s a limo, a classic or even your neighbour’s minivan, finding the “right” vehicle to transport you and your wedding party on the big day takes time and effort, but the payoff can be very rewarding. A company recommended by a friend is always a good idea, but be sure to check out review sites to see what previous customers say before making a booking. Try to keep your search local. Hiring a car based in the marriage area will not only save you money, as companies hired from outside the area add the cost of extra fuel and chauffeur’s hours onto your price, but a local company will also know the area, ensuring your trip from the bride’s home to the church or reception runs according to time.

Ask for a discount. Many companies offer a discount if you book more than one car, so if you do need to transport a large bridal party, do it in style with a chauffeur driven limo, and save cash through a multi-car booking.

Other tips: Type of Car: Most people choose

Schedule: Before completing the

a limousine but the vintage car is also a great choice. If you like the car, you can always compare the prices of other agencies. The rent of the car may differ on the car brands. If the car is expensive, the rent is also expensive.

agreement, make sure that the agency understands who to pick up first, where to pick up and what time. You don’t want anyone missing the wedding.

Cost: Depends on the location of the wedding venue or route and the hours or days the car is rented.

Driver: Needed to help you with the hassle of reaching the location. Most agencies provide chauffeurs who are experienced and professional drivers.

Insurance: It would be nice if the agency or company has insurance for both the wedding car and passengers. The payment method would also differ from agencies or companies. You might pay fully and when the special day is over you get some of your money back. With info from Motoringmojo.com

BRIDESMAIDS: Not just an R-rated movie

You’ve invited these women to share in one of the most special days of your life. They’re spending money on dresses and shoes, they’re throwing bridal parties for you and generally helping make sure your experience is as close to perfect as possible. How on earth do you thank them? Here are a few ideas:

Budget: Some brides spend hundreds of dollars, while others

spend only a few, or even make something inexpensive but deeply personal. Some people think that the cost of bridesmaid gifts should correlate with your wedding budget. Others say that the more time your friends helped you with wedding planning, the more you should spend on a bridesmaid gift for them. Do what feels right for you.

You can choose to get everyone the same thing, try variations on a theme, or choose entirely different presents for each person. Try to spend about the same amount on each present, except for the maidof-honour’s gift, which is typically more lavish than the other ones.

Pampering: Who doesn’t like a day at the spa? Whether it’s the

full package of massage, manicure/pedicure and haircut, or a simpler choice, spa gifts are always a big hit during high stress occasions. And don’t forget gift baskets of lotions and soaps, a manicure set, pajamas and robes, spa gift certificates and makeup kits.

Wedding Accessories: A classic bridesmaid gift is something

she can wear on the wedding day, but still use later on, including a necklace, earrings, a wrap or shawl or gloves.

Destination Weddings: Include such items as a beach towel and bag, gift certificate, bag of goodies to help remember the special trip.

Memories: This might include something like a personalized

photo album, a poem, or personalized CD of meaningful music.

DIY: Anything goes! A handmade scarf, candles, soaps, bracelets,

bath salts or scrapbook.

Food: Always a favourite! Maybe a box of chocolates, candies,

cheese, wine, a coffee maker, restaurant gift certificates, or cooking class lessons. Just remember, whatever gift you choose, a simple Thank You goes a long way, too. With info from about.com

Milton Rotary

Helping in Community & Around the World They say volunteering isn’t as popular as it used to be, but the hardworking men and women of the Milton Rotary will tell you it’s just as rewarding as ever, and urge everyone to make the time to help out. The world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed in 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns

of his youth. The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Rotary’s popularity spread, and within a decade clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg. As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization’s dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self. Raising funds and assisting others less fortunate in your own community and around the world is a wonderful organization to devote some spare time to, but with only 24 members in Milton, extra hands are always welcome.

“We need all the help we can get,” says Ries Boers, a Milton Rotary member for 32 years. “It’s difficult to find volunteers in these busy times. With people working outside the community, by the time they get home from their jobs, volunteering even more time isn’t always a top priority.”

The group meets once a week on Monday nights, and when it hears from various informative speakers. Although the rules stipulate that prospective members must hold responsible positions in the community, those rules have been loosened a bit over the years to allow for various interested and qualified members to join.

difficult economy, so it’s hard to volunteer. It is a commitment, but a very rewarding and wonderful one.”

And you may be surprised by the vast amount of projects the Rotary is involved in both at home and abroad. They’ve supported the hospital for many years, lowincome housing, the Rotary Park, Scouting and Guiding, Halton Women’s Place, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the annual Good Neighbour’s Day, to name just a few.

“The best part is giving back to the community and those less fortunate,” says Boers. “It’s a feeling you can’t buy.”

There’s also a popular Youth Exchange Program, which allows a Milton youth to travel abroad for a year, for a chance to travel and learn about a different culture. There are also bursaries in high school and leadership training available, surely a worthy cause. “We all pitch in,” says Boers of the dedicated members. “People’s time is being used to simply survive in this

If you can’t commit to a more involved position, you might want to consider Friends of the Rotary, wherein you volunteer when you’re able throughout the year.

For more information on how to get involved, visit miltonrotaryclub.com, where you’ll also find details on the upcoming Corporate Challenge.

“Put a smile on someone’s face who doesn’t have a good reason to smile,” says Boers. “It’s important to get involved.”

Stephanie Stephanie Sherlock

Young Canadian Golfer

One to Watch Crediting her father as the one who has most influenced her impressive career, Barrie-native Stephanie Sherlock is on her way to becoming a household name in the golfing world. A member of the 2008 Canadian World Amateur Team, Sherlock turned pro in 2010, after finishing tied for 14th at the Final Qualifying Tournament to earn Priority List Category. In 2011, her best finish was a tie for 16th at the Avnet LPGA Classic. She also had a successful amateur career, winning the 2007 Canadian Amateur Champion and was a semi-finalist at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. While at the University of Denver Sherlock was a three-time NCAA All-American, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Having lived in Florida between the ages of six and 11, the first course she ever played was Countryway Golf Course, an executive course in Tampa,

FL, where her father worked as superintendent. “I started swinging the club around age eight or nine, and started playing golf at age 10,” she says. “My dad was a golf course superintendent, so he would take me out to the course when I was little. Golf runs in the family; my grandparents are big time golfers.” From those beginnings, she has since gone on to land professional representation. “When I first got my card I was approached by a few different firms,” she says. “I met with each of them and felt Landmark was the best fit for me. Everyone was really nice and helpful.”

www.insidemilton.ca

37

“I played on the team all through college and gained lots of experience and received a lot of great coaches as well as help with traveling expenses,” she says. “In 2007 I won the Canadian Amateur which was probably my biggest thrill so far in golf. After I graduated I went directly to LPGA Q School. I was fortunate enough to earn my card on the first try.” And RCGA Golf Canada has also been helpful in terms of support, training and assistance for Sherlock. “Golf Canada and the many individuals associated with the amateur team program have helped me immensely through my amateur career and continue to today,” she says. “Just being able to travel with the team and play in events like the British Amateur, The US Amateur and the World Amateur gave me the confidence to pursue professional

Stephanie Sherlock

golf as a career. Being able to work with the best coaches and trainers in Canada really helped me to take my game to the next level.”

Besides good representation, the caddy is yet another part of the important golfing team, and Sherlock is no exception. “My caddy last year was Chris Benz,” she says. “I met Chris at Q School he was caddying for another player. I wanted to have a caddy with lots of experience and who knew the courses as well as the LPGA well. Chris was perfect for the job. We had a fun year and he helped me a lot.” Like most golfers, Sherlock played on various tours to get to where she is today. “I wasn’t that highly recruited coming out of high school,” she says. “I had a few full-ride offers and of all the places I looked at, I liked the University of Denver the best. I loved the city as well as the team and coaches.” At the time she didn’t know if she wanted to pursue golf as a career, so it was important for her to get a good education, and the business school at the University of Denver certainly qualified. She continued to improve throughout college, due in large part to her participation in Golf Canada’s amateur team program.

FUN FACTS Favourite “golf” movies: Tin Cup, Happy Gilmore Favourite golfer who inspired you to follow your dream: Lorie Kane If that is a professional golfer, have you played with or met them? Yes, throughout my rookie season Lorie has been a great mentor and friend. What do you do to unwind? Spend time with friends and family at home. What are your thoughts about golf returning to the Olympics (2016) for the first time since 1904? It is very exciting! I think it will be fun to watch for everyone. Hopefully if I keep working hard I may be a candidate for Team Canada; that would really be a dream come true.

Spring is in the air, but what sounds even sweeter than the chirping of returning birds? The solid thwack of a bat hitting a ball right out of the park. If you’re looking for a good game to watch in this glorious weather, there’s a great team close by. The Burlington Twins, who relocated in 2011 from Mississauga, are the newest franchise in the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL), joining existing franchises in Barrie, Brantford, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Guelph, Kitchener and Ottawa. The IBL was founded in 1919 and is the oldest amateur men’s league in Canada. It’s also considered as one of the best, regarding quality of play. IBL players include NCAA players, minor league players, ex-professional and junior and senior aged players. The IBL has been home to a number of aspiring Major League players as each year the IBL graduates a number of players into the professional ranks. Aaron Boag is a newcomer who is also a Burlington native. Aaron previously played in the IBL with Brantford and London before joining the Twins. The Twins have created fierce rivalries with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hamilton Cardinals and Ottawa Fat Cats. This season the Guelph Royals will return after a oneyear absence. The first match up between the Twins and Royals will mark their first encounter in IBL history. The Twins play out of Nelson Park located directly behind Nelson High School. The atmosphere at Nelson Park caters to all ages. Children are invited to run the bases at the end of the 4th inning and adults can enjoy cold beverages at the beer garden. A CLASSIC

AWARD WINNING MILTON FAVOURITE

While we all know the menu, and we’re all familiar with the chicken, fries and classic sauce, Milton’s Swiss Chalet has managed to serve up something a little extra-special recently: a Canada-wide, customer based service award.

And also, “The hostess shined, the server was wonderful, and the whole atmosphere was contagious with happiness, very rare in other locations. All the customers were happy, like they were shooting a commercial, but this was real!”

Customers are invited to fill out online comment surveys after they’ve dined at the restaurant, which are then gathered and compiled country-wide. This year Milton’s own Swiss Chalet won first place, complete with a trophy now on prominent display in the entrance. With more than 200 Swiss Chalet restaurants across Canada, Milton should be very proud of this outstanding achievement.

With feedback like that, it’s easy to see why the Milton location came out on top. Of course, the delicious food doesn’t hurt, either.

“Our staff is amazing,” says owner John Pilarski. “When I took over two years ago, I wanted to be number one and now we are. And we definitely plan to repeat next year.” Some of the glowing customer reviews included: “This location, even though there are closer ones, is the most enjoyable around. Worth the 20 km drive.” And, “I recently moved to Milton and this is by far the best experience I have had at a restaurant since I moved here.” 46

“People are unaware that many restaurants use frozen food for preparation,” says Pilarski, who has worked previously with the company as District Manager and Director of Operations. “Swiss Chalet uses only fresh food prepared daily. Our french fries start out as potatoes in the morning, and the chicken comes out of the oven every 15 minutes. You can’t get much fresher than that.” And their loyal customers know it, with about 95 percent of the diners considered “regulars.” The business also prides itself on giving back to the

Finally, one of the best customer comments shows how loyal the diners truly are: “We will travel the 45 minutes to come to this location. Where good taste isn’t expensive!

Every Day Should be Mother’s Day Whether she gave birth to us, or just raised us, our Mom is one of the most important and influential figures in our lives, and on one day each year, we’re asked to appreciate her. Aside from the obvious reasons to give her flowers and tell her you love her, here’s a bit of the long history behind Mom’s special day. The majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day, it’s common for Mothers to be lavished with presents and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones. But it wasn’t always this way! Only recently dubbed “Mother’s Day,” the practice of honouring Motherhood is rooted in antiquity, and past rites had strong symbolic and spiritual overtones — societies tended to celebrate goddesses and symbols rather than actual Mothers. The ancient Egyptians held an annual festival to honour the goddess Isis, who was regarded as the Mother of the pharaohs. The festival of Isis was also celebrated by the Romans who used the event to commemorate an important battle and mark the beginning of Winter. The Roman root of Mother’s Day is found in the celebration of the goddess Cybele or Magna Mater (Great Mother). A later incarnation of a holiday to honour Motherhood came from Europe. It fell on the fourth Sunday Lent (the 40 days of fasting preceding Easter Sunday). In the 1600s a clerical decree in England broadened the celebration to include real Mothers, referring to the day as Mothering Day. When the first English settlers came to America, they

discontinued the tradition of Mothering Day. While the British holiday would live on, the American Mother’s Day would be invented—with an entirely new history— centuries later. The first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. Despite having penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic 12 years earlier, Howe had become so distraught by the carnage of the Civil War that she called on Mothers to unite and protest what she saw as the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers. A West Virginia women’s group led by Anna Reeves Jarvis began to celebrate an adaptation of Howe’s holiday. In order to reunite families and neighbours who had been divided between the Union and Confederate sides of the Civil War, the group held a Mother’s Friendship Day. After Anna Reeves Jarvis died, her daughter Anna M. Jarvis campaigned for the creation of an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother and in honour of peace. The holiday flourished in North America and flowers, especially white carnations, became very popular. By the time of Anna M. Jarvis’ death, more than 40 countries observed Mother’s Day, and today that number exceeds 70. When United States congress approved Mother’s Day in 1914, they designated it for the second Sunday in May. A fascinating history, for sure, but the most important message? Tell your Mom — or an influential woman in your life — how much she means to you! With info from mothersdaycentral.com

This season bring the inThis season bring doors outside the indoors outside

personal oasis

n

No one enjoys being outside in the warm weather more than Canadians — probably because we have so little of it to enjoy. As soon as the snow melts, we emerge, blinking against the sun, and start making plans to transform our backyards into our personal oasis. And now, more than ever, we have the products available to truly bring the beauty of the indoors outside without worrying about fabrics, furniture or even lighting fixtures.

Outdoor Living “There are so many great products out there that look like indoor furniture, but can withstand the elements,” says Marnie Warman of Burlington and Oakville’s Interior Design House. “Every pattern you can imagine for cushion coverings, quality carpeting and furniture that looks like wicker, but is resin-based so it can be outside.” The first things to look for, says Warman, is anything mold and mildew-resistant and preferably cushions and furniture with built-in grommets for good water run-off, further extending the life of the furniture.

start living the outdoors

“Putting an area carpet underneath patio furniture is very popular, and it looks great,” says Warman. “And carpet available now looks and feels just like you’d find inside.” So, say good-bye to the feel of turf-grass floor covering!

But, you don’t have to stop with carpeting. There are lighting fixtures — either electric or candle-based chandeliers, based on your backyard setup — votives, urns, fireplaces, even entire kitchens that can be used out of doors these days. With adequate covering, you can even have a television in your backyard, with big comfy armchairs made to withstand wind and rain.

“Sectionals for backyards are very trendy right now,” says Warman. “Pair them with lamps and lanterns, ottomans, artwork, bars and bistro sets and you can be as comfortable outside as in.” As for plates and glasses, Warman says there’s no need to bring anything breakable onto a patio anymore; acrylics are readily available and look just as fashionable now. “We love our outdoor time,” she says. “And now our backyards can look as beautiful and attractive, while still standing up to the force of Mother Nature.”

Spring has sprung Time to get your yard in shape! The weather is warming u p , the snow is finally melting, b u d s ar e b l o o m i n g , an d you r g r a s s l o o k s … n ot g ood . I f y o u wa n t t o en j oy a l u sh, g r e e n y a r d th i s su m mer , n o w i s t h e ti me to d o a l i t t l e p r e p a ra ti on to m ak e s u r e y o u r s is th e b est on t h e b l o c k . Lawn: Rake away thatch that has accumulated since the fall. Thatch is the tangle of dried-up dead grass and weeds that intertwines with the live grass. If left alone, thatch can prevent nutrients and water from reaching the roots of your lawn, so you need to remove it now as the grass begins to sprout. If you plan on seeding your lawn, it’s important to remove all the thatch, otherwise the grass seed will simply sit on the thatch and not put down roots in the soil. If your lawn already needs a mowing, set the mower blades at their highest setting, just to trim off the top. This is also a good time to spread fertilizer on your lawn if you think it needs a feeding. If you’re having moss problems, purchase a combination fertilizer and moss killer.

Aerating: Now soil needs to be loosened, making it possible for the oxygen to reach the roots of the plants – and at the same time it gives a better-looking flowerbed. In smaller beds you’ll get by with hand tools but if you’re working with larger areas, a rotary cultivator is your best bet.

Trees and Shrubs: Take a walk around your landscape and examine trees and shrubs for any limbs or branches that have been broken or damaged over the winter. Trim

branches without collars very close to the trunk. Trim branches with collars or other natural projections at the collar edge.

Compost/Manure: Once the soil is dry enough, you can dig in some compost or manure. You can speed up the decomposition process in your compost pile by turning it with a fork every couple of weeks. Add lawn clippings and eggshells to your compost heap. However, do not add lawn clippings if you have treated your lawn with chemicals to get rid of weeds or pests.

Weeding: This is a good time to get down on your knees and remove as many weeds as possible before they have the opportunity to flower and then seed. Need an incentive? Consider this: some weeds can produce as many as 10,000 seeds each. Remember, too, that weeding is much easier if you do it when the soil is wet.

Aphids: As the new spring growth begins to appear, check carefully for aphids. Lift the leaves and examine the underside where aphids will congregate.

srebelo.com

As the snow melts and the weather warms, it’s natural to want to spend as much time outside our homes as possible. S. Rebelo Landscapes can help achieve that goal with superior service that creates outdoor living spaces to add value, quality and comfort to your biggest investment. President and Designer Steve Rebelo and his team are fully qualified and committed to providing innovative designs, technical excellence and quality workmanship whether the project is big or small. Whether your focus is soothing water features, stunning gardens, stonework, woodwork or design, this company’s professionalism, honesty, creativity and friendliness all contribute to overall exceptional attention to detail. Steve and his team pride themselves on working closely with clients from the design stage to the completion of the project for complete satisfaction, with custom maintenance programs to ensure a well-maintained investment. “For a homeowner planning to hire a designer or contractor to complete a landscape project, large or small, it’s important they fully understand the contract they are signing and ask questions regarding information outlined in the contract, including the materials, cost and services,”

says Steve. “Homeowners should also ask the designer and contractor for the opportunity to review their portfolio of projects and access to client references, comments or feedback from previous clients, so that they are confident and comfortable in the designer’s and contractor’s workmanship and reliability.” These are all vital factors to think about when making changes to your home, and S. Rebelo Landscapes takes all of these into serious consideration. “I think homeowners have to feel comfortable on a personal level with the designer/contractor and be able to work together with him or her to overcome any challenges that may arise. By working together, the final project will ultimately meet expectations of the client.” What it all comes down to is hard work, skill and good business ethics. After all, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.”

Argan Oil By Claudia Cruise

We are all looking for great skincare products. Argan oil offers many benefits for winter weary skin. Also known as “liquid gold” or “miracle ingredient,” Argan oil is an organic product derived from the kernel of the Argan tree, a Moroccan native. The oil is one of the rarest and most expensive in the world largely because of the time consuming process required to extract it from the tree. Women from the Berber tribe in Morocco hand harvest the tree’s kernels, then grind them into a paste before separating the precious oil. Among its properties are high levels of vitamin E, antioxidants, unsaturated essential fatty acids, sterols and carotenes, all of which feed thirsty skin. When our skin lacks hydration it appears more aged and doesn’t heal as quickly, so fine lines, scars and stretch marks can become more prominent. Argan oil’s high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin E are key ingredients in preventing the degeneration and aging of our skin. Once hydrated, skin appears more youthful and healthy and is less prone to irritation from the elements. It is complimentary to other skincare products, allowing them to work more efficiently. Argan oil can be used for many purposes such as hand and foot care, scalp treatments, eczema, massage therapy, wrinkles, stretch marks and scarring. Due to the high quality, a little really does go a long way. Usually only a few drops are needed depending on the area you are treating. A great oil that you can enjoy in the comfort of your home, or treat yourself at the spa.

Every woman needs to invest in this miracle in a bottle.

By Stacey Newman The orange glow cast a warm, ‘60s glow across the runway. The silhouettes of fashion aficionados and fans filled the packed bleachers on either side of the runway at World MasterCard Fashion Week. The words Joe FRESH flashed on the white wall at the back of the runway, and the crowd was hushed. Darkness. Then scenes from the 1966 film “Blow-Up” set the mood as models began a retro glide down the runway for one of the most highly anticipated collections at fashion week—Joe Fresh— introducing the new, refined look and downtown feel of the Joe Fresh brand. Most of us think of Joe Fresh as the clothes from Loblaws/Canadian Superstore, and that is certainly where you can find Joe Fresh items. However, you might not know that Joe Fresh is named for the brand’s designer, Joseph Mimran. Mimran is a Canadian designer and entrepreneur also known for launching the Alfred Sung and Club Monaco brands. Joe Mimran was born in Casablanca, Morocco. His mother Esther was a couturier in Morocco and when the family moved to Toronto in

the family dressmaking business to Canada. During the 1970s, Joe and his brother Saul launched Alfred Sung, named for the Chinese designer whose work they had admired. They hired the designer to design their Alfred Sung line and the brand was highly successful across North America. Years later, it was Joe’s interest in minimalist/unisex fashions that inspired the Club Monaco brand and today, he brings this expertise to Joe Fresh with the same love of colour, textiles and function in fashion that he has brought to the world of Canadian and American fashion for decades. The Joe Fresh fall-winter collection (fall and winter collections are shown in spring and vice-versa), is replete with deep red, blues and mustard tones, luxurious fabrics like tweeds, silk, and soft leathers. Chevron and houndstooth patterns feature prominently. The cropped jackets, long skirts and colour blocking left a buzz of retro energy throughout the room as the show’s bright and bold finale made way for Joe Mimran on the runway to receive a well-deserved round of applause. Which pieces are my favourites from the collection? A sleek, pretty, blue mod dress with glitter, mid thigh length, sleeveless. Cute, flirtatious and who doesn’t love glitter? The mustard tweed trousers and mustard silk blouse are close seconds. Joe Fresh isn’t just for the girls either. The men’s line is hearty, clean and almost nautical. Off white pea coats, plain white shirts (perhaps a nod to Joe’s Club Monaco days), woolen toques and thick turtleneck sweaters to keep the lads warm, whether on city streets or taking an evening stroll along the romantic shores of Lake Ontario, Joe has proven that he has something for everyone. Fun, functional, and affordable! Joe Fresh brand clothing can be found at the Real Canadian Superstore, 820 Main St E, Milton, ON L9T 0J4.

Within a minute of my introduction to Jennie Laws, she was telling me about her day in the recording studio in Los Angeles. No small talk, no insincere or rehearsed publicity spiel. Jennie immediately began describing the sound of her favourite guitar—the Martin OMJM John Mayer Special Edition she had been playing earlier in the day. Beginning with a quiet, thoughtful description—its smooth, gorgeous tone, its shorter notes—she burst into a crescendo of enthusiasm as she told me about the tracks she was laying down in the studio for her latest songs. It has been three years since her last release, songs that were quickly popular and spanned musical genres with influences from jazz, soul and pop. The single “Heavenly” continues to be popular today and Jennie’s following has grown to include fan bases across North America. From Toronto to New York, to Los Angeles and beyond, Jennie describes her music today, compared to her music of a few years ago, as soul and pop, some ballads, but more up-tempo. Jazz continues to influence her vocals, but her sound is currently more retro, with live instruments and the organic fluidity that punctuates her effortless talent. “The new tracks are full of harmonies, colours and textures, hip hop rhythms, mandolin, live strings, sampled drums and... the resonance of a really good love song.”

The Passion, Poise and Heavenly Sounds of a Canadian Recording Artist By: Stacey Newman

Love is a succinct word, perfect for describing Jennie’s approach to music. Says Jennie, “As much as it is about entertaining people, it’s also about creating positive energy and spreading love. There’s a purpose to what I do and that’s the most important element of the songs I write and sing.” Jennie is genuine and clear when she discusses her training, her education, and the personal goals she has set for herself as an artist. She grew up in the Toronto area, and at the age of 16 she had already originals using a four-track machine. Her musical influences demonstrate the diversity of her talents, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Michael Jackson to Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder. She hopes to touch her listeners, to make them feel good, for them to feel less alone, or to simply feel a certain something. Receiving a full scholarship, it was at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, it was there that Jennie Jennie was able to develop her own, unmistakable sound. A sound

r that she says she continues to hone and refine as she learns from the people with whom she has been thrilled to work, both in Canada and in Los Angeles where she now resides about half the time. Los Angeles is a Mecca of industry people, and her work has been introduced to movie producers, licensed for television and where the people with the studio and industry knowledge are there to support emerging artists like Jennie. “The business end is where I’ve had to do a lot of learning. Connecting with the right people, learning to promote myself and develop my live performance skills. I had a lot of stage fright, but I performed here every week, then every month until I got over it.” Now she easily performs on stage and she is bringing that confidence to the 12 songs, the lyrics for which she has written collaboratively, that she is recording. Jennie has grown so much, stating that the people who have watched her since the beginning describe her as

having come into her own. She’s looking forward to live performances and the release of what she believes will be her breakout singles in the coming months. Recording costs a lot of money. Artists like Jennie usually fund their recording efforts as independents. She has invested everything in her music and it’s paying off. She is busier than imaginable, but she loves it. The excitement in her voice for her recent projects is almost tangible. Projects such as string arrangements for other artists, background vocals, lead vocals, playing guitar, playing keys (Jennie plays guitar and piano, as well as being a gifted vocalist). As though her talents weren’t enough, she’s also a composer and works in film scoring. “It’s an honour to be a recording artist. I love it so much. I want to do it as long as I can.” With no shortage of talent or passion, Jennie Laws will undoubtedly be taking the music industry by storm for many years to come.

GENIE & FRIENDS, CELEBRATING CANADIAN CINEMA FOR 32 YEARS! by Stacey Newman Move over Oscar, because your northern cousin Genie has a whole lot to celebrate. It is difficult not to compare the Genie Awards to the Academy Awards, but is the comparison necessary? The Genies are similar to what we are used to seeing at the Oscars, but the films nominated are Canadian. Held in Canada for 32 years and preceded by the Canadian Film Awards, Genies are awarded to films qualified as Canadian film productions or co-productions that have a theatrical release within certain dates. Canada has a long, proud cinematic history. Despite being one of the most prolific nations in the world for producing awardwinning films, Canada’s Genie celebrations are modest in comparison to the Oscars, and for good reason. The Genies remain focused on the films, and on recognizing cinematic excellence. We understand the beauty and profundity of truly great cinema in Canada. The Genies are historically a night of elegance and integrity. The 32nd Genie Awards celebration was no exception. Two films swept the awards this year. Firstly, A Dangerous Method, starring Viggo Mortenson and directed by the enigmatic David Cronenberg. The film played at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011, and Mortenson attended this year’s show, taking home a Genie for best performance by an actor in a supporting role. The darling of the 32nd Genies, however, was Monsieur Lazhar, a film that encapsulates the essence of being Canadian. The film is an emotional passage transcending the themes of grief, loss, education, immigration and friendship. Directed by Canada’s Philippe Falardeau, Monsieur Lazhar took home six awards, including Best Motion Picture, Best Achievement in Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay. Eleven-year-old Sophie Nélisse is one of the youngest to win a Genie, taking home her award for performance by an actor in a supporting role for her portrayal of Alice in Monsieur Lazhar. Nélisse was ten years old when she began working on the film, her first, in which she plays the wise but broken Alice, who spirals when she discovers that her teacher has committed suicide. It is her new teacher, Monsieur Lazhar—an Algerian immigrant with a tragic story of his own— that accompanies and guides Alice through her grief towards understanding. Monsieur Lazhar is being played in theatres in Canada, and will be released theatrically in the United States mid-April.

One of the more bizarre and interesting turns of the Genies this year was Andrea Martin’s eleventh hour cancellation as co-host of the televised awards this year. She cited a scheduling conflict as her reason for reneging on her commitment to co-host the awards. I couldn’t help but wonder how many heads might have rolled if Billy Crystal had pulled out of the Oscars the night before the show. Luckily CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos—affectionately known in Canada as Strombo–more than rose to the occasion as he singularly hosted the televised portion of the awards with the same ease and wit that he brings to his interviews. The 32nd Genie Awards took place during a starstudded soirée, full of immensely talented Canadian filmmakers, actors, and films. I’d take the Genie Awards over the Oscars any day. Last but not least, some of my favourite Canadian films, Genie recipients for Best Motion Picture in past years: The Sweet Hereafter directed by Atom Egoyan, The Bay Boy directed by Denis Héroux and John Kemeny, The Red Violin directed by Niv Fichman, and Atanarjuat directed by Norman Cohn, Paul Apak Angilirq, Zacharias Kunuk and Germaine Wong. Incidentally, Atanarjuat, The fast Runner was the first entirely Inuit-produced and acted feature-length film. The stories surrounding Canada’s vibrant cinematic culture might inspire a film of their own one day. Happy 32nd birthday Genie!
