ENTREPRENEURIAL DADS THEIR THOUGHTS ON ACHIEVING BALANCE

Free Evaluation / Guaranteed Best Value

THE VALUE OF GOLD The story of gold is as rich and complex as the metal itself. Wars have been fought for it; love has been declared with it, lives have been lost in the pursuit of it, stories have been written about it. The reality that this metal has always appealed to men’s attention is astonishing in itself. Why? You tell me? If the truth be told; mans fascination with Gold has only driven up the value. What is it worth to you?.

MAKING YOU SMILE I am astonished as I visit various homes across the GTA, how much gold I see lying around. What amazes me is that so many people have mismatched, unwanted, missing paired, forgotten, old pieces of Gold and Silver locked up in old jewellery boxes. Some of these pieces are just gathering dust, never to be worn again. we love the look on our clients faceswhen we tell them how much money these forgotten pieces of jewelry are worth. As a Gold and Jewellery buyer, it puts asmile on our faces when we can help others unexpectedly.

This is what we do...this is what we do very well!!! Check out the Testimonials on our Website www.golddollars.ca/testimonials Let us help you either through our mobile service that comes to your door, our walk in office downtown Milton or Host a “Gold in the City” party and earn even more money!

PUBLISHER’S LETTER As I write this we are putting the finishing touches on this issue and I hope you all enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. We got to work with some really great people and I can’t thank them enough for taking time out of their busy schedules to sit down with us so we could share their stories with you. Fathers in

N

BIZ

aim Bejiany

Dedicated entrepreneur Naim Bejiany from Flooring Works listens carefully to lifestyle requirements, and also pays particular attention to budgeting constraints. With unwavering attention to detail, whether it’s changing one room, transforming an entire house or choosing the right product for your commercial purposes, Flooring Works offers basic, advanced and custom flooring installation in both residential and commercial properties. Naim offers more than 20 years of flooring installation experience, and is actively involved in every aspect of the business. He also ensures the quality of all workmanship through his personal interaction with both his installers and his customers. And he remains committed to customers, even after the job is done.

1. How did you start your own business? It’s hard to say, but I think it started with a lemonade stand. From there, I moved on to a flooring installation job after school and on weekends, followed by a full-time installer position. Shortly after that I took on a flea market booth which quickly expanded into eight booths. I talked about how one day it would be nice to open a store, potentially as a retirement gig. One day a friend of mine suggested opening a store together, and on an average Friday afternoon we signed a lease and Flooring Works was on the map. Four years later I bought my partner out, and became the sole owner or Flooring Works.

2. How do you balance family life with your business life?

Anyone with children knows being a parent is hard work. It’s a full-time job in itself. If you happen to work outside the home as well, you have the added challenge of balancing your parenting duties with your job. These devoted Dads, however, show us how they manage to maintain thriving entrepreneurial dreams with the essential responsibilities of parenting. With Father’s Day coming up, let’s take a moment to appreciate everything Dads do for their children and their families.

Narurally, family comes first. It’s a serious daily effort to juggle a demanding business with a young family. But where there’s a will, you find a way. Lots of sacrifices are definitely made, but the real key is to be on the same page with your spouse with both of you really, truly giving 110 percent.

3. What is the biggest challenge about being both a father and a business owner? The biggest challenge on a daily basis is afternoon daycare and Kindergarten pickup needing to happen when clients want to meet with me the most. So, early evening appointments have to be planned, which is equally challenging because my wife usually needs to work late herself.

4. What advice do you have for fathers who want to start their own business? Do it, do it now! Tommorrow will never come around.

5. What is the best part about being your own boss? It’s easy to take for granted all the benefits, but one is definitely walking my son to Kindergarten. It’s a small chapter of my life that I can never get back and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. From the business side of things, huge personal growth comes with growing a business, including meeting and networking with people on a daily basis.

3. What is the biggest challenge about being both a father and a business owner?

zim Rizvee

President, CEO & Broker of Record of MinMaxx Realty Inc., Azim Rizvee has an extensive educational background including two masters’ degrees, a Master of Science and MBA with major in marketing as well as Project Management Professional Designation from PMI. After a successful managerial and directorial career for a number of large organizations, both in and out the real estate industry, Azim is now fulfilling his commitment to providing superior real estate services for the best value on the market with MinMaxx Realty Inc.

1. How did you start your own business? Real Estate has been my passion and interest for over 20 years; I started investing in Real Esate and built my first custom home while I was an Undergrad student back in 1993. It was this passion along with my desire to explore my full potential that led me to leave a successful corporate career to venture in entrepreneurial world and make the difference.

2. How do you balance family life with your business life? The only way to find work life balance to me is not having to go to work a single day; what I mean is that if you love what you do, and you are passionate about it, you don’t go to work to work, you are there to play and have a lot fun doing what you love doing. Having that mindset makes you get most of the time you spend helping others while in office or field as well as enjoy the most what you spend with family at home. Having my life partner also as a business partner helps in keeping us tag team managing business and family priorities much more effectively.

Being a Real Esate business owner has its own challenges and rewards; there are certain times, days and months more busy than others; that brings in the biggest challenge as well as opportunity to manage your time effectively so that you work hard at certain times and play hard at others; with super coopertive kids and family, we enjoy every bit of the benefits of this entrepreneur’s dilemma.

4. What advice do you have for fathers who want to start their own business? Get your family on side before you venture into anything worthwhile; ask for support when and where you need it, and give every bit back once they need you by their side. Your family is your first and core business; any other business is its franchise, and they should both benefit from each other in that capacity.

5. What is the best part about being your own boss? Sky is not the limit, and you can create your own Universe. Once you have created it, you can decide to remain at the centre of it, or move on to create a new one. There are no limits, no boundaries or constraints either but just your limiting beliefs; the less of them you have, the more you grow, and fast. You have authority but more responsibility to everyone around you; but in the end, it’s worth every bit of it, once and if you can afford to be in this role, as you can make whole lot more difference in the world around you rather than complaining about things you can’t do. It’s that mindset, that is the best part of it all.

Troy Newton would never have guessed that his “Troy’s Diner” would become one of the most popular in the GTA when it first opened in 2005. His open kitchen concept and unique “Coca Cola” red and white décor offers an element of entertainment that can’t be matched anywhere else. Troy’s homestyle cooking, down-to-earth menu and courteous and friendly staff make any visit an enjoyable one and you’ll definitely want to return.

3. What is the biggest challenge about being both a father and a business owner?

1. How did you start your own business?

4. What advice do you have for fathers who want to start their own business?

I have always wanted to open my own restaurant. When the opportunity came up, I spent about six months

The first few years were hard on everyone. My kids wanted me home more. The business needed all my attention, but like what any great family would do, we pulled together. I am very blessed that my family works with me, so we always see each other.

looking for the right location, I had already had a vision of how I wanted it to look, and I took both my two passions, collecting Coca Cola items and cooking. Once I found a location, it was perfect, with the help of my family/friends we transformed my vision into reality.

Always remember family come first! Nothing in the world is more important than your kids. You may not have a lot of time left in your day, so make sure you always take a moment to make your kids feel special. It is the quality of time not the quantity. I’m so lucky that my kids are very understanding.

2. How do you balance family life with your business life?

5. What is the best part about being your own boss?

It can be very difficult. You have to make sure you take the time to spend with your family, even if only a few hours, and make them count.

Being able to control your own destiny

Bryan

Baeumler

wasn’t a television star first. He was once just a boy helping his dad - an avid aircraft engineer - with building projects at home. Referring to himself as his father’s little trailer, Bryan says he was his dad’s tag along. Bryan reminisces about the lessons he learned growing up with two older brothers and a very handy father. He speaks fondly of his upbringing and of the manner in which his father would teach him new things, first by explaining something and then by allowing Bryan to try something new on his own. As a teenager, Bryan took on odd jobs for neighbours, starting his career as a handyman for hire at the age of 14! It seems that Bryan is so exceptionally good at what he does simply because he does what he loves and what he knows: Success is the sum of his jobs well done. Though he studied political science and business in university, Bryan says that he knew he could never work in a desk job environment. He is a problem solver by nature, and he loves the opportunities that mistakes afford him. He welcomes any opportunity to learn and the opportunity to take on difficult challenges. Bryan Baeumler is a sincere, down-to-earth nice guy. Despite being the host of HGTV’s highest rated show ever, Bryan doesn’t take himself too seriously. What he does take seriously is his work. He also prioritizes his role as dad to seven-year-old Quintyn, five-year-old Charlotte and one-year-old Lincoln. “I work hard. Then I play hard. When I’m at home, I’m there. I’m not on the phone or on email.” When he is at home with his children, Bryan spends real time with his kids. He laughs as he points out the differences in his children’s personalities. For example, his oldest son Quintyn is an avid angler at just seven years of age.

Quintyn brings home books from the school library about fish of the world, and he is almost old enough for a father-son fishing trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Building projects are a family affair too, and Bryan says that one of his favourite projects was his own summer cottage up north. He and wife Sarah, and their three children worked on the family’s dream home together while documenting the 3,700 square foot build on his hit show House of Bryan. Featuring his own family, with real trials and tribulations during their own reno is just very Bryan Baeumler. Bryan didn’t gloss over the difficulties of building in a remote location away from city conveniences. With a newborn son and the stress of a big home build, the Baeumler family used their own experiences as a means to teach viewers. This seems to be the Baeumler way; teaching comes as naturally as meeting hammer to nail. Bryan also hosts Disaster DIY, and his newest show “Leave it to Bryan” is a logical culmination of his talents. In “Leave it to Bryan”, Bryan focuses on helping would-be home renovators to prioritize their projects room by room, by managing all aspects of a home reno including expectations, home finances, the logistical chaos of a home in transition, blueprints, materials, and all the peripherals that people tend to overlook when they’re excited about something new. Bryan shows us that passion, integrity and a good old-fashioned willingness to get your hands dirty can only lead to good things. We hope Bryan enjoys his father’s day with his family in their summer dream home. You can learn more about Bryan Baeumler at www.baeumler.ca.

His new album ‘Temptations’ is establishing him as one of the most exciting new artists in country music today and Steve sat down with Inside Milton Magazine for an intimate discussion about his life, his music and his ambitions in the land of the Grand Ole Opry. Steve sits unassuming and approachable at a table inside Bryden’s Pub. The natural light streams in through the tavern’s windows, and the staff are friendly and happy to see the country singer they’ve watched growing up over the last decade.

Steve’s first jam sessions and live shows took place at Bryden’s Pub on Main Street in Milton. He tells me about his Thursday night escapades with friends in town. He and his friends were students from Milton District high School. They played in their own band, LTD, and reveled in the Thursday night jam sessions where Steve says Bryden’s was the place to be. At the age of five Steve was playing the piano. At 13, he was singing and playing the guitar. His high school band friends cut their live musician’s teeth at Bryden’s where they would play all sorts of music including covers of their favourite country southern rock tunes. Sometimes his friends would bring in their djembes (a skin covered drum played with bare hands) and Steve would hone his guitar playing, vocals and his stage presence. Being on stage is something that has always come naturally to him. Steve says he loves playing to a crowd, and that it makes him far more nervous to have an audience of just one or two people. Steve learned a lot about himself exploring his love of music in those days, and most importantly, he discovered that it his drive could propel him into a serious career in music. That career path would begin with an education at Fanshawe College in the Music Industry Arts program. The program focused on production and recording, the business of working in the music industry. The next step, if he was serious about making a career for himself, was to go to Nashville. On the advice of his professor and colleagues, Steve took a leap of faith. He and his mom drove down to Nashville where he began the process of building a home base for himself south of the border in Tennessee’s little big town. Nashville is home to many different scenes. It is a college town. It is the home of indie rock. Located in midtown Nashville is music row where Steve says he would love to crawl into the attics, which he thinks might be filled with bottomless archives of unreleased songs. Nashville is a songwriter’s Mecca. A fellow student connected Steve to a recording studio in Nashville. Steve interviewed and gained an intern position at Quad Studios (originally known as Quadrafonic Sound Studios) where artists like Neil Young, Joan Baez and Jimmy Buffet have recorded. Then he found an apartment at the Music City Hostel and apartments, which Steve says was a godsend. He made friends, connections, and immersed himself in the songwriting and recording community around him.

27

He says his first summer in Nashville was the greatest summer of his life thus far. He stayed in the apartments for a couple of years, making lasting friendships and learning valuable lessons, some of them tough, about making it in the country music business. So what about the music? Steve Rivers is all about connecting with his audience, through honest lyrics, real experiences and reaching out at live shows. Steve says it isn’t hard to get in front of major producers. One of his first meetings was with Ralph Murphy, a musician, record producer, songwriter who serves on the board of the Canadian Country Music Association. The meeting was humbling. Steve’s songs were “cut to shreds”, but he says the advice was invaluable. Ralph Murphy showed him “where the bar was, who he was competing with and how to listen better”. Steve took the lesson very much to heart. In today’s internet-era music industry, things are very different from the old days. Musicians remain independent longer, developing a fan base and brand for themselves long before they are signed by a major label. A musician’s brand is as much a commodity as the music itself. Musicians need to make connections early on with good producers, and most importantly with fans. Steve wants to connect with his fans, and he believes the best way to do so is to get out there to the small towns and cities and just play. He believes firmly in the grass roots approach, stating that he values fans that are growing with him by following his music through the years. His second album ‘Temptations’ is on tour right now, and Steve is all about getting the word out, using social media and radio to promote his new country melodies and charms. He is also a gifted songwriter, stating that songwriting/publishing is a huge component of success in the music industry. Nashville is the place to

be for publishing. He says that collaborative songwriting is a lot like dating, and he has a number of published songs under his belt that he has co-written with artists like Amanda Nagurney, and Canada’s Kerosene Creek. When it comes to his own lyrics and compositions, Steve says,

“I will always be honest with my audience, about my music and about who I am. A good song is a good song, and it will do well.” With Steve’s kind nature, handsome exterior and soothing southern sounds, it’s difficult to imagine anything but huge success for this emerging musician. He jokingly refers to his approach to media as a Honky-tonk Revival. His career path is a journey, much like the road trips he has taken along Highway 40—the Music Highway—connecting Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. His willingness to learn, to absorb, to exercise great patience and self-discipline has served him well on his path to country music fame. He has no illusions about overnight success, and he says matter-of-factly that it’s about being in the right place, at the right time and being able to deliver in that moment. Steve has prepared himself to deliver when he’s called upon to do so, because he knows that if he doesn’t, he won’t get a second chance. Steve Rivers comes home every few months to reset, and to play local festivals and shows. Steve Rivers’ latest singles “Mess It Up” & “Uncomplicated” are currently being played on Canadian and US radio stations. Be sure to request Steve Rivers on your local country radio station.

BASEBALL GAME By Michael Watson

I knew that baseball existed, I knew that it involved players, a ball and a bat. The rest is all new to me! What an experience! I spent the afternoon watching the game, speaking to fans, enjoying the great outdoors and even spent an hour speaking with the Commissioner of the league. Pretty great start to my introduction to baseball. Amazing that at 21 years of age, growing up minutes away from ball diamonds, I just had not been involved at any level with the game. May 12th, my world changed as I attended what will be the first of many baseball games. Baseball is not just a sport, it’s an event. When the Burlington Twins and Hamilton Cardinals played on Saturday, May 12, people came not for a game but for an experience. Fans relaxed in the bleachers, watched from behind the dugouts and set up lawn chairs. Some brought picnic blankets or patio chairs to relax in the shade. Families and friends grabbed a hamburger or hotdog from the fresh, sizzling grill run by Local Eatery and Refuge. Adults enjoyed a cool beer courtesy of Muskoka Cottage Brewery and served up by Thistle Fish & Chips. With tickets costing only $5 for teenagers and seniors, $7 for adults, and free for anyone under 13, the community game is an affordable way to spend a sunny afternoon. As the game opened, attend-

Deputy Mayor Jack Dennison is an excellent athlete who took the ceremonial first pitch quite seriously. A 45-minute warm up showed that Jack had determination as well as skill. And he insisted on delivering from the “Hill” at 60’ 6” away. The Twins may have found a future pitcher! Fans settled in during the opening pitches. Conversation and jokes flowed between friends and strangers even as they watched each throw of the ball and swing of the bat. Every now and then, spectators would stop what they were doing and cheer as one of the Twins made the run to home plate. At the end of the fourth inning, the young fans get to run the base paths and dream about becoming great ball players. “It’s a fascinating, very fine sport,” says league commissioner Stuart Smith.

A grand slam, sending them two runs ahead of the Twins. “You relax, grab a burger or hot dog, get a drink, and watch careers in the making,” says Scott Robinson, Burlington Twins owner. “Bringing the team to town is all about giving back to the community. I want parents and children to enjoy the game and then think about tossing a ball themselves. Great family time, great baseball and great to encourage activity for all ages.” As the sunny afternoon went on, the winning numbers of the 50/50 raffle were announced, proceeds from which go to the United Way. With the Twins and Cardinals tied 10 to 10 the game moved into extra innings. The tie broke when the Twins scored a run in the bottom of the 11th. Fans cheered and applauded the culmination of a fun and enjoyable outing. Great way to start the season.

Loves Giving Back to the

COMMUNITY You’d be hard-pressed to find a more philanthropic or community-involved business than Milton’s MinMaxx Realty. Their involvement and love of giving back has led to a recent Canada-wide community services award from Realtor Quest, a well-deserved and prestigious honour indeed. Serving Halton, Peel, and GTA-wide with a new push towards Burlington, MinMaxx continues its quest for excellence in the realty market, with ongoing success. “We’re the number one sales team in the GTA for four years now,” says owner and CEO Azim Rizvee. “Our 10 team members work together as a cohesive company, not as independent realtors and I think we can provide a much better service to our clients that way. We work under the realty name, supporting the company and supporting one another, and most importantly, supporting our clients.” With a team that knows the market, the product and Milton as well, it’s no surprise they continue to flourish. And with their proven love of the community, they are committed to giving back in a variety of ways. Some of their

charitable giving includes Putting Your Heart in the Arts at the Milton Centre for the Arts, donating $150,000 with MinMaxx Hall named for them; MDHF strategic partnership, the United Way Mayor’s Golf Tournament and Platinum Level sponsorship for Home Sweet Hope, a transitional housing organization. “We like to take the lead in business partnership,” says Rizvee. “We try to be involved in as much as possible, both large and smaller charities. Arts, education, sports: We hope to help make our community both better and stronger.” MinMaxx also looks after its clients as well with lots of customer care including movie nights and a trip to the African Lion Safari this month, where a client’s name will be drawn to win a free listing commission. “We have many repeat clients,” says Rizvee. “A home is a huge investment in life and we like to make the process of buying or selling as easy and stress-free as possible. Our agents focus on forming relationships with clients and it shows in our success.” With a passion for real estate equaled with a passion for giving back to the community, it’s easy to imagine that success continuing for years to come. HALTON WOMEN’S PLACE PROVIDES SAFE HAVEN

“The Halton Women’s Place will provide a safe haven, information, services and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children.”

With that impressive mission statement, this wonderful organization proves its commitment to giving shelter and crisis services to physically, emotionally, financially and sexually abused women and their dependent children, and is dedicated to ending violence against women and their children. Located in Milton, this 22-bed shelter provides residential and transitional services, ongoing counseling and support when it’s most needed.

“We wish we weren’t still needed in the community, but we are,” says Development Manager Carm Bozzo. “We’re at or near capacity a lot, depending on the time of year. We’re also seeing more diversity in our women, more elderly and different ethnicities, people realizing they have a safe place to go if they need it. There’s no shame in reaching out for help, nor should there ever be.” With a concentrated focus on community education, Halton Women’s Place now has a Public Education and Advocacy program in place, working in local schools to teach young people about all forms of abuse. “We need to reach the kids, teach them about abuse, that it’s not acceptable,” says Bozzo. 43

“We’re fighting a battle constantly though in society with social media, with the images and song lyrics we’re bombarded with. It’s so important to reach kids now.” Opened in October 1980, the shelter housed more than 500 women and children, and more than 700 crisis calls were received. In January 1994, with funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Rotary Clubs of Milton, Oakville and Burlington, and other private and corporate donations, a second shelter located in Burlington was opened. From the day it opened the second shelter has been running at near capacity and is now responding to more than 2,000 crisis calls a year. The shelter is a short-term stay, providing between six to 10 weeks of housing, and all food, clothing and support that is needed. After the women leave, they are provided with ongoing counseling and support if required. “Some women may show up in the middle of the night with nothing and we provide everything we can,” says Bozzo. “Our counselors do phenomenal work. I can’t say enough about them, plus we provide legal support as well if needed.” Need Help NOW? The Halton Women’s Place Crisis Lines are: (905) 878-8555, and (905) 332-7892. DR. CHRISTOPHER ASSAD MILTON’S PLASTIC SURGEON Plastic surgery encompasses many things, including reconstructive surgeries, the treatment of skin cancers, hand surgeries, hand trauma, facial trauma, wound care, burns, and cosmetic surgeries. Unfortunately, in today’s healthcare, many practitioners refer to themselves as cosmetic surgeons when they are not surgeons at all, which concerns Dr. Assad. As a board certified plastic surgeon, not only did he complete his plastic surgery education, he also completed a fellowship in cosmetic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Fort Lauderdale. “Patients must advocate for themselves,” says Dr. Assad. “They have to do research and know that the surgeon they ultimately work with is competent, credentialed, and has their safety and well-being at the forefront of their treatment.”

A

As Milton’s only plastic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Atkins is an expert and he’s been around long enough to prove his knowledge. Dedicated to the Milton community, Dr. Assad has operated out of Milton District Hospital since 1998. Dr. Assad services the entire Halton region as part of a group call service for Halton Healthcare, JBMH in Burlington, and on weekends he covers hospitals in Mississauga. When he first opened his office, Milton was very small and there was very little professional office space available. His Burlington space — at Upper Middle Road and Appleby Line — became available and he took the opportunity to open his practice. Milton is where he soon plans to open a new office. 46

From non-surgical procedures like fillers and rejuvenation injectables, to surgical procedures, the range of services is broad. Men have started engaging in more and more rejuvenation treatments, as the demands of the workplace have motivated men to want to appear more youthful, which then boosts their confidence. The workplace is competitive, and a more youthful appearance can signal a more energetic presence.

“My first and foremost concern is the patient. I’m honest about what I can do and what I can’t do, I don’t critique patients. I don’t want to do that. I want to know them, to understand what they want to talk about and why.”

“I’m a surgeon, not a salesman,” says Dr. Assad. “My first and foremost concern is the patient. I’m honest about what I can do and what I can’t do, I don’t critique patients. I don’t want to do that. I want to know them, to understand what they want to talk about and why.” Relationships are the priority. Dr. Assad gets to know his patients and they get to know him. His staff members have been with him for years, Rena for three years and Marilyn, who has been an office fixture as his primary patient liaison for 12 years, can offer information about every facet of his practice. For OHIP covered procedures patients are typically referred to Dr. Assad. However, for elective procedures, patients can simply contact the clinic to speak to his support staff. Once your appointment is booked, Dr. Assad will meet with you to discuss what you want to talk about, surgical or non-surgical. He will discuss your preconceived notions so that when you walk out the door you feel comfortable and safe, armed with information and realistic expectations. After surgery, he stays in touch with patients in the days following their procedures, with an obligation to get patients through the healing process. The most touching moment during my interview with Dr. Assad-when a former patient came into the office. He had removed a growth on her hand, but she quickly went on to tell me about Dr. Assad’s reconstructive work on her father. She told me that her father’s hand was crushed in an industrial accident years earlier, and that his fingers were practically black following the accident. He was certain that his fingers would be amputated. Then the woman went on to tell me that Dr. Assad painstakingly worked on her father’s fingers, and ultimately saved them. The rapport between Dr. Assad and that of his patient was similar to that of a meaningful friendship. The warmth that characterizes Dr. Assad’s office environment and his demeanour, and the relationships that he has with his staff and patients was apparent in itself. Dr. Christopher Assad’s website is www. plasticsurgeryforyou.ca where you can find information about his practice or book your consultation!

hen a child has outgrown his diapers and has said goodbye to his pals at daycare, it’s the parents’ responsibility to find an elementary school that’s going to provide their child with a well-rounded educational experience that will set the foundation for the child’s future. Any diligent parent would be looking for a school with first-class teachers and administrative staff, great facilities, a healthy lunch program and a solid athletic program to keep their kids active and healthy. Six schools in Milton have taken the next step to ensuring their kids get a well-rounded elementary

school experience by introducing their students to the official program for the number one participation sport in Canada. No, it’s not a hockey program. It’s Golf in Schools presented by Callaway. Golf in Schools is a joint effort by Canada’s national sport organization for golf, Golf Canada and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Canada. Together, they have created a curriculum endorsed by Public Health and Education Canada that teaches kids the details of the game of golf, right alongside typical gym class activities like soccer and basketball. Some might argue that golf doesn’t have the same athletic merit as your classic gym class staples but Golf Canada’s Chief Sport Development Officer begs to differ. Golf is a great sport for kids to get involved in. The program helps them to develop the physical literacy skills, and attitudes necessary to lead healthy, active, and successful lives. Golf is a fun game they can take with them and continue to play long after they have left school.” The overall goal of the program is to introduce kids to the game of golf and the values that accompany it. Golf is a rare sport in that it’s one of the only sports you can start to play as a child and continue to play for the rest of your life. That’s why Golf Canada and the PGA of Canada have developed a Long Term Player Development guide that highlights the skills necessary to start to play the game and as the child grows, defines optimal training and competition pathways that enable the child to reach his or her potential in golf and as an athlete in general.

It all started innocently enough, with Robinson accepting an offer to paint her father’s friend’s house one weekend in 2009, and to her surprise she found she not only loved the work, but excelled at it. It all grew from there. “I love being creative,” says Robinson. “I couldn’t do a desk job, or work in a factory. I really like being on my feet.”

Slap It On Painting is Making its Mark

“I own my own company, and I’m making a living doing what I love to do,” says Robinson.”

Although based in Milton, Robinson and her crew work in Toronto, Oakville, Burlington and its environs, offering competitive pricing and quality product. “My crew works hard,” she says, “and we all love what we do.” Although still a fledgling business, Slap It On is growing through Twitter, local flyers, and most importantly, word of mouth. Many of her clients refer her to friends and other business associates who need work done as well.

It

may not be what Ashley Robinson thought she’d end up doing, but she loves it, she’s making a living at it, and business is thriving. Although she studied fashion at school and did restaurant work previously, the 24-year-old now owns and operates Slap It On Painting, an interior and exterior painting company staffed entirely by women.

“I pride myself on providing good customer service, a good end result and quick and accurate work,” says Robinson. “I’m pounding the pavement every day and making small goals for myself. I’m determined to meet those goals, then move on to the next goals. I really want this to succeed.” It’s a full-time job for her now with eight employees and a company that provides murals, wood staining and wall painting, all while paying attention to detail and sticking to whatever budget the clients decree. Slap It On is flexible, does quality work and hosts a female-friendly working environment: all positives in a depressed economy.

Monty Kuntz first conceptualized his family entertainment centre in 2009. He was inspired when a young man wrote a letter to the editor in the Milton Canadian Champion asking why Milton didn’t have a bowling alley, and the idea was born. Monty reminisces about the process, stating that it took two years to begin converting the building from a lighting warehouse, to obtain permits for construction and parking, to complete surveys, gain approvals and to complete a traffic flow study. In 2011, the concept became a reality and the 32,000-square-foot entertainment complex began construction. The building was completed after one year. Champs opened in 2012, and the complex has something for everyone, every age, under one roof. BOWLING: Champs bowling features 10-pin bowling lanes with automatic scoring, large screen HDTVs, oversized projectors, including six boutique lanes for

Patio

Create your own outdoor

Who wants to eat indoors during the most gorgeous weather of the year? It’s time to take your meals – and your guests — outside, so make sure your backyard is well-equipped to handle an enjoyable feasting experience.

www.insidemilton.ca

First off, make sure there’s enough seating for all your guests, be it all-weather wicker, aluminum, teak or iron; there are plenty of attractive and affordable options. A great grill is also essential. Finding a grill that fits your entertaining needs is crucial, and there are literally hundreds of options out there. Don’t forget outdoor lighting, and on cooler nights, keep guests warm with patio heaters or an outdoor fire pit. Some other tips:

Patio Location

size matters Make sure it’s not too small. If you already have the furniture you’ll be using for your patio, take it outside and set it up to determine how much room you’ll need. A good rule of thumb when placing furniture near the edges of the patio is to allow at least 16 inches. Also consider any patio accessories that you’ll be putting on the patio, such as an outdoor heater, patio fire pit or BBQ grill. If your patio consists of an outdoor kitchen, hot tub or a built-in outdoor fireplace consider building two patios, or one connected patio separated by different levels.

Take sun and shade that you already have into consideration, as you don’t want intense sun rays beating down on you when you’re trying to relax outside. If your site doesn’t have any shade-producing trees, add small patio trees, a pergola or consider an array of patio covers and patio umbrellas.

patio material

Landscape around your patio by adding some landscaping shrubs and patio trees once your backyard patio is finished to brighten up the overall atmosphere. Consider adding an outdoor garden water fountain or a patio water garden.

A more basic patio should work with a concrete floor, which can be spruced up with some brick edging or by staining it a different color. Stone veneer is another option, since it gives the look of real stone but costs much less. Brick is also widely used for outdoor patios, and it gives your patio a classic look. No matter what material you like, make sure you think about how it will look up against your home. You may want to avoid brick if your home already includes brick, and some tile looks better up against stucco rather than wood.

Types of Patio Designs An open patio is best suited if you enjoy the sun and the breeze. An enclosed patio or patio room are great for a more controlled environment all year long. If your backyard size and budget will allow it consider adding a open patio and wood deck so you can the best of both patios. Patios built directly next to a house are great for adding a cover of some type that will protect you from the sun or any inclement weather. Consider building the patio big enough that you can cover part of it and leave the rest open. The most important consideration, however, is the amount of enjoyment you’ll receive with your family and friends during our short but hopefully hot summer months.

The

Patios of Milton,

Respite for the Dog Days of Summer

As Canada’s fastest growing municipality, Milton has experienced not only a boom in population, but we’ve also been enjoying an influx of new businesses, shops and restaurants. Whether you prefer one of Milton’s longest established spots or a new restaurant, one thing is certain—everyone loves a great patio on a summer day! Victoria Day weekend heralded the opening of pools and patios across town. We’ve selected a diverse few to showcase, but there are many, many patios in Milton, and a quick Google search for Milton restaurants returns a number of websites like urbanspoon that highlight Milton’s food and beverage establishments by price point and type of cuisine. We think the best patios satisfy the following criteria: comfort, shade, good food, refreshing summer drinks, warm and welcoming staff and a fun, summery atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for pub fare,

at Home

Specialty cocktails and rare spirits certainly have their place at your local watering hole or high-end beverage establishment. However, this summer, it’s all about fresh, flavourful, muddled drinks made at home in your own kitchen to be enjoyed on your patio, porch or in your backyard oasis. Muddling is the process of mashing and stirring in ingredients such as mint leaves, berries, or herbs like fresh basil or thyme into your mixed drinks. A wooden muddler is a tool used by bartenders like a pestle to mash fresh aromatic ingredients for the best quality flavour. Muddling brings out essential oils and juices in a manner that will make your homemade cocktails not just good, but fabulous! Take a Mojito or a Greyhound—two of our seasonal summer taste sensations—add fresh mint, or berries, some real Florida ruby red grapefruit, and voila, you’ll have taken a regular backyard mixed drink to a new level of

60

sophistication and flavour. Don’t be afraid to set the bar high, even though your recipe should be kept simple and accessible. You can achieve maximum flavour and texture by being adventurous with sourcing local, fresh ingredients. Real juice versus concentrate, fresh herbs versus dried or processed, full berries and pulp muddled to perfection. Kevin recommends using good ice, avoid tap water, use filtered water and watch your mixed drinks evolve into backyard marvels of taste and texture. Kevin says you’ll never have a hangover from fresh strawberries! Keep your summer mixed drinks and cocktails fun, simple, but loaded with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Whether you’re drinking a wine cocktail, a greyhound, a classic Mojito or margarita on a patio, be bold with your ingredients and keep your flavours fresh. If you purchase one summer bar utensil, find yourself a wooden muddler and muddle your way into gorgeous, refreshing mixed drinks for the patio season!

Two young

entrepreneurs

Serve Up the Best Brews and the Finest Fusion Cuisine

from Milton followed their dream of opening a bar. What they envisioned was an edgy rock bar where sports and entertainment rule. A place where classic sports bar fare meets fresh gastro delights. The two young entrepreneurs are brothers Patrick and Roger Radojcic, and their dream became a reality when they opened the Rad Brothers Sports Bar and Tap House in December, 2011. Since then, business has been hopping. Older brother Patrick grew up in the industry. From dishwasher to owner, he has done it all in food and beverage establishments. He worked in Etobicoke and Clarkson, and he and younger brother Roger discussed their plans to one day open their own place. Their vision began to take shape when they stumbled on what they felt was the perfect location at the corner of Ontario and Derry Roads in the booming town of Milton. How did they manage to realize their dream while meeting the wants and needs of patrons in the Milton region? Patrick and Roger tell me all about their love of good food, their family heritage, their interest in the community and their wish to fuse the usual sports bar fare and atmosphere with microbrewery offerings and the gastro element of fusion cuisine. The Rad Brothers have created a warm, inviting, casual setting, with classic sports bar excitement and the elegance of an urban lounge. The space is contemporary in its interior design, with a warm and inviting silver stone wall behind a wellstocked bar. With comfortable dark wood tables and booths, and vintage artwork pieces that are handpicked (each of which comes with a story), the ambience is chic, cozy and fun. Their menu success hinges on the pairing of microbrewery, imported, and domestic beers with an exciting menu. The food is fresh and prepared

on site. To make their menu even more authentic, the Rad Brothers are proud to mention their mother’s daily contributions to the menu. Her soups have been creating quite the buzz with customers regularly coming in for her newest creations. From soups, to gazpacho, to homemade salsa, this family establishment is truly family-run with their mom in the kitchen every week. Menu offerings are seasonal, higher end, with a fusion flair, but include classic items like handmade (never frozen) burgers and wings for die-hard sports bar eaters. The beer menu includes McClelland Imports, Mill Street, local superstars Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery out of Barrie, as well as all major brands and all anchored by Molson. Roger and Patrick are friendly with Jack Daniels–their official mascot and the father of Tennessee Whiskey–that adorns the foyer of the bar. Jack was supposed to be painted, but they liked him just the way he is. Roger and Patrick are understandably happy with the evolution of their dream. Their staff is friendly, courteous, and genuine smiles abound. The rapport between staff and management is open and fun. When it comes to entertainment, the Rad Brothers boast even more fusion and fun. Thursday is acoustic night with live requests. Friday night is club night with a live DJ. Saturday is live music night and the brothers Rad are very proud of their live music. They’ve chosen their musical

acts carefully, selecting only musicians that they enjoy listening to themselves. Did I mention their incredible food? I ordered the Habanero Carnitas flatbread, made with pulled pork, red onions, cilantro pesto, cambazola and habanero salsa. It was fresh, flavourful, unique and hugely satisfying. I also ordered a martini that had my own mother giddy and glowing. Mid-June, be sure to mark your calendar for the grand opening of the Rad Brothers patio, or pop in before then if you can’t wait to try their incredible appetizers or their beer sampler. Come for the game, stay for the party! The Rad Brothers is a super cool place to hang out in Milton, a place where the owners care about their customers. Adults, young adults, teams and kids, everybody is welcome!

Scott’s Car Care Focuses on the Details Slap It On Painting is Making its Mark

Whether you need complete car detailing, a rust check, window tinting or polishing, buffing and waxing, Scott’s Car Care and Rustcheck can do it all.

Scott’s Car Care Focuses on the Details

www.insidemilton.ca

66

With more than 30 years experience in the field, Scott Maclean-Howard started the business in Milton in 1989, creating an 11-bay facility that offers a full line of accessories, carbon fibre wrapping, and windshield repair and replacement. “Along with cars, we can detail motorcycles, tractor trailers, boats, motor homes, RVs, farm tractors, you name it,” says Maclean-Howard. “We provide an ozone machine for removing odours from vehicles more thoroughly.” A vehicle can be a huge investment, and it’s important to keep its exterior and interior in great shape. Scott’s exterior service includes attacking environmental pollution, corrosion, and the sun’s ultraviolet rays that can damage your car’s finish on a daily basis. Rust and metallic particles penetrate your car’s surface leaving the finish feeling rough and gritty. This fallout is especially visible on white or light-coloured vehicles. Swirls and surface scratches visible on dark colored vehicles are the result of improper washing, rubbing, and abrasive polishing. Without a durable protective coating, the sun’s ultraviolet rays and oxidation will cause your paint to look faded and chalky. Scott’s exclusive Paint Renewal System will restore that new car look.

Whether you want to get your car ready to sell, protect your new investment, or simply maintain the beauty and length of your vehicle’s life, Scott’s can help. “We’re a 3M-certified shop,” says Maclean-Howard, “and we also do other services, including renewing headlights, trailer hitches and wiring, residential and commercial window tinting, and we’re also a weather tech floor mat distributor. And of course we offer a convenient customer shuttle service.”

Scott’s Car Care is also heavily involved in the Milton community, giving back through many local charities and fundraisers, including schools and churches and programs such as Score and Stride to help teenagers.

Don’t forget the interior, where dust, dirt, exhaust, and odours are absorbed by the car’s surfaces. Eventually, that new car look and smell is gone. Visible soiling and discolouration accumulates on fabric, vinyl, and leather surfaces. To preserve and protect your car’s interior from premature wear and tear, proper interior maintenance and protective conditioning treatments are recommended on an annual basis.

Scott’s Car Care is located at 410 Industrial Dr., Unit B. Tel.: (905) 875-3367. E-mail: info@scottscarcare.net

Exotic Car Show By Michael Watson

Felice Cappellano got the idea while discussing car shows with his fellow enthusiasts. Exotic car hobbyists will travel long distances to reach shows at Pebble Beach in California, Cavaillino at the Breakers in Florida, or even travel to Europe for Villa Este in Italy in order to enjoy their passion for luxury and exotic vehicles with other aficionados. These car shows serve as a forum for lovers of Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Porches, and other high-class vehicles to get together and display and discuss their passions. Why then, as one of Felice’s friends asked, are there no such events in Canada? The idea took hold. Felice and his wife, Cheryl, were aware of the Nelson Youth Centre due to a friendship with board member Wendy Wooten. They knew that the Nelson Youth Centre was a mental health facility dedicated to helping troubled children and youth across Halton. Felice wanted to help the Centre but knew he could do more than just write a cheque. When one of his friends brought up the lack of exotic car shows in Canada, Felice knew he’d found an answer.

www.insidemilton.ca

68

The concept was simple, yet inspired. Felice envisioned over fifty Ferraris and other exotic luxury cars lined up to give rides to children of the community. Cheryl pitched the idea to Wendy, who agreed to bring it up at the next NYC board meeting. They loved it and agreed to bring the event to Burlington.

Thus was born the “Marques D’ Elegance Event” at Paletta Mansion. The car show, which will be on August 19th, 2012, has been built around two main purposes. First and foremost, to support the Nelson Youth Centre continue its work helping the children of Halton. The second purpose is to offer a luxurious forum for exotic and luxury car enthusiasts to get together and share in their passions while

allowing everyone to enjoy the experience. Despite the focus on cars, this will not be an event ‘just for the guys’. With the inclusion of a fashion show, wine and beer gardens, door prizes, and a vendor area, the Marques D’ Elegance Event will have something for every member of the community to enjoy.
