Good for families Geilo, Norway

Where? In the Hallingdal valley, north-west of Oslo, Norway’s oldest ski resort is reachable by train and shuttle bus from Bergen and Oslo airports.

Why? The slopes are quiet and unintimidating, and the ski school is award-winning, making it a great place to learn, especially as all the ski instructors speak good English.

Gressoney, Italy

Where: Gressoney is part of a group of unsung resorts in the Aosta valley, sharing a ski area with Champoluc and Alagna. Why: Families will love the quiet pistes and lack of queues, and the little ones will wolf down the Italian food.

Denbigh and Flint County Show August 2017

Thousands once again flocked to the annual Denbigh and Flint County Show. Running for many years, the show has travelled all over both North Wales counties; moving to the existing site at the Green, Denbigh in 1990. Since then the show has evolved into the easy to follow site that visitors experience today to provide an eclectic mix of agricultural competitions and attractions suitable for all the family.

We arrived and parked up in the free car park close to the ground, and we were straight away drawn in to the first stand we came across - a lumberjack demonstration that had us all cheering on the competitors.

Also in the countryside section we learnt the correct way to handle an air-rifle and spoke to some of the experts in wildlife conservation; fisheries and wild raptors.

Our next port of call was to see the horses and we walked down into the light horse area where there are nine different rings to watch a whole host of horsemanship, including BSJA Show Jumping.

From there we headed to the main ring in time to see the amazing Royal Signals motorbike display team ‘The White Helmets’ performing stunts and tricks – including jumping through fire which wowed the crowd. There were a number of other attractions on throughout the day including the Cheshire Dog Display Team.

In the livestock area we saw cattle, sheep and pigs of all types being shown and judged by the finest stock-men and

women and wandering a little further we saw magnificent shire horses. The Fur and Feather section had a huge variety of hens, ducks, pigeons and rabbits – and gave the children the chance to show their favourite pets too.

We next visited the vintage section which had a number of classic cars, tractors, engines and machinery from a bygone age of farming to admire. A fab bit to stroll around with your ice creams and the exhibitors were all very friendly and willing to answer questions – we came away with great facts and information.

After a stroll around we headed to the Food Hall which had cookery demonstrations throughout out the day and a wonderful array of locally produced foods to tempt your palate – also a great place to head for lunch! We tried lots of delicious samples from salamis to pies to cakes and even tried a couple of cider and spirit samples, before making the difficult decision of what was for lunch.

The afternoon was spent walking around the rest of the show ground. There were over 200 stands at the show, including the owl rescue centre, gifts, garden ware, home ware and information stands from wildlife to Chester Zoo - providing shopping and gifts for everyone plus plenty of freebies and little attraction for the kids. My daughters were also amazed by the Floral Art and Horticulture section where home grown fruit and veg were judged and you could see a bee hive at work and buy some bees wax candles or sample some honey.

Of course we couldn’t miss the Kidzone area which had regular Punch and Judy shows throughout the day, plus a jungle gym, bouncy castle and inflatable slide and some fairground games.

Families with older children should also check out the funfair and enjoy some fast and furious rides for the brave, they also had a few rides that were a little more sedate for the less adventurous…

The Denbigh and Flint Show is a great day out with a massive variety of attractions and entertainments to suit the whole family. Next year promises to be even bigger and better with new classes and even more new attractions. We can’t wait!

MOTORING REVIEW October New Audi Q8 SUV Previewed Expect the best of the best from Audi’s new luxury 4x4, including hybrid power and a hot RS Q8 model When it goes on sale in 2018, the Audi Q8 will sit close to the top of the luxury SUV tree, where it’ll compete with the Porsche Panamera, the Bentley Bentayga, the Range Rover and the forthcoming Lamborghini Urus.

It’ll usurp the A8 saloon as Audi’s flagship, and while the Q8 you see here will be the core model, Audi will almost certainly offer a powerful RS Q8 in time.

Seen below in our exclusive image, the RS Q8 should produce about 600bhp. Expect it to come suitably adorned with a hard-hitting bodykit and vast alloy wheels, as well as lowered suspension for a more menacing stance and greater cornering stability.

The Q8 has been previewed a number of times, both in standard guise and in ‘warm’ Q8 Sport Concept form. The Sport Concept may well morph into an SQ8 model, which would sit between the Q8 and the expected RS Q8.

The Sport Concept has a 444bhp 3.0-litre petrol engine, with an additional electric motor boosting power to 469bhp. Like the latest A8, we expect each and every Q8 to have a hybrid setup, with the ‘standard’ model likely to produce around 438bhp – enough to propel it from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds.

It should come as no surprise to learn Audi is broadening its SUV range. The German carmaker already offers four ‘Q’ SUV models, against BMW’s five ‘X’ cars, and Mercedes’ five ‘GL’ SUVs. Given it’s easier to engineer profitability into luxurious, expensive vehicles, it’s no wonder Audi is aiming high with the Q8 – although in fairness the dinky Q2 caters for SUV customers on more relatable budgets.

Audi Q8 design The Q8 takes up roughly the same amount of road space as the current Audi Q7 – it’s over five metres long, with three metres between its front and rear wheels. It sits 40mm lower, -

though, and is distinguished by its lower roofline and sharply angled rear end. This should lend it an SUV-coupe air – something that was echoed by the Q8 concept being fitted with four, rather than five seats. While the Q8 may become available as a five-seater by the time it arrives in showrooms, Audi is likely to leave carrying seven people to the Q7.

Like the new Audi A8, the Q8 will feature Audi’s next generation of interior design.

A wraparound dashboard graces the Q8 Concept’s interior and showcases a “new control and display concept”, and it’ll come festooned with technology and infotainment systems. The latest in self-driving and protective technology is expected to feature, with Audi likely to be putting its recent tie-up with tech company NVIDIA to good use.

If an SQ8 variant is offered, add £20,000 to that figure, while any RS Q8 is likely to be closer to £100,000 – before options.

October We're into October and it's time to clear the summer bedding and think about brightening the garden before the dull days of winter.

Well here we are in October we must now think of clearing the summer bedding as it is beginning to look sad and we must get our autumn and16-19 winter flowering NOVEMBER plants into the ground.

There are plenty of great looking violas, pansies and heathers with their bright colours to brighten up those dull winter days. So let us now create some colour and interest to take us through those periods until the spring.

Buy your bulbs for spring Talking of spring, if you haven't already bought your bulbs, now is a great time. There is a huge selection in garden centres and nurseries of tulips varying in colour from white through to nearly black, not forgetting those gorgeous reds, oranges, stripes, short, tall, early and late varieties. It is good to look out for all the species as well.

There are many small species of crocus, iris, tulipa, alliums, anemone, fritillaria, lily-of-the-valley and plenty of other exciting bulbs. The prices vary depending on what you are looking for, but they are not always as expensive as you think to plant up the odd container on the patio or by the front door.

If you use established planting that is already in there, and may be add heathers, euonymous, or skimmia japonica to give colour all season long. Bulbs shooting up through from dwarf narcissi in late February through to late flowering tulips and narcissi in early May, you can create your own wonderful colour creation all of your own.

Creating a boundary Hedges are the perfect solution for providing a naturallooking boundary to a garden; they are more colourful and interesting than a fence and are perfect for encouraging wildlife into the garden.

There are lots of plants suitable for providing a hedge, barrier or screen - whether you want evergreen or deciduous, formal or informal. Now is a great time to plant a hedge, especially if you want an inexpensive one. There is a wide range available bare-rooted such as beech, hawthorn and hornbeam plants, which are less than those bought in pots. But, if you want an evergreen hedge, then these plants are only available in containers.

Before planting, water the plants well - either give container plants a good soaking or place bare-rooted plants in a bucket of water for half an hour or so.

Then it's just a matter of planting at the right distance apart: most types should be planted 18 inches apart although conifers and more vigorous types can be planted two to three feet apart.

For a really thick barrier you can even plant a doublestaggered row. To help ensure a bushier hedge, trim back sideshoots and even cut off the top couple of inches of deciduous hedging plants and privet. After planting, water in well and be prepared to water during dry spells for the first year. Adding a sprinkling of fertiliser over the soil in the spring will help make growth even stronger.

It is hard to beat the value of conifers for the winter garden. There are so many colours and shapes from the pencil-like Juniperus scopulorum Skyrocket to the spreading pines, firs and the ground covering prostrate junipers. There are types that grow from several inches high to several feet according to your garden. There are also dozens of evergreen shrubs which, like conifers, not only come in various shades of green but there are ever-yellow and ever-silver as well as variegated types. The latter will certainly help lift the spirits on dull and dark days.

This Is My Kingdom Now’ is the new album from Justin Currie, out now on Endless Shipwreck Records. Currie will support the release with a some UK tour dates with his band The Pallbearers, later this year.

After 22 years toiling in the moderately successful pop/rock outfit Del Amitri, Justin Currie made the rash decision to go it alone in 2003, spending the next four years writing, drinking and doing any weird non-rock gig he was invited to participate in; jazz shows, folk shows and soul shows added more saggy strings to his collection of bows. In 2008 he finally pulled his finger out and pushed the button on a solo career with the release of his masterpiece of maudlin, ‘What Is Love For’.

October is foraging month!

With the country restaurants and even celebrity chefs serving up wild food, it is becoming hugely fashionable to go foraging nowadays.

If you’ve ever popped a blackberry into your mouth on a country walk, or swiped an apple from a conveniently overhanging branch - go on, admit it - then you’re a forager, too. When you think about it, we’re all hunter-gatherers at heart and helping ourselves to fruit and fungi from hedgerows and fields is a valuable reminder of where our food actually comes from.

It’s always been a part of life in North Wales, especially in the rural areas. Farmers still chew sorrel leaves to quench their thirst out in the fields, and grandmothers (well, some of them) still pluck nettle-tops to add to a traditional Welsh broth. Blackberrying, mushrooming, nut gathering and sloe-picking are common pursuits and the old recipes are seeing a revival.

Our favourites

The blackberry or bramble is found widespread over Flintshire with its arching canes found in open spaces in tangled thickets. As a change to making pies, jam and bramble jelly, try making blackberry wine or blackberry whisky. Or you can try pickled blackberry with cheese, and use the syrupy vinegar in dressings or on ice cream afterwards. Be quick though as blackberries are only widely available until the middle of October.

Damsons are a type of plum with oval, slightly pointed fruit about 2-3cm across with a dark blue skin and yellow-green flesh. They grow on large shrubs or small trees, often in thickets and are again abundant in the hedgerows of Flintshire. The fruit ripen from mid-August and can be picked often into October depending on conditions. It’s a tart fruit that makes excellent jam but you can also make very good port-like damson wine and even damson vodka.

From the blackthorn, sloes are tart, acidic fruits used to make the deep-red, wintry drink, sloe gin. Available from September along hedgerows, (we have found great crops on canal tow paths) the general rule is to pick the small round blue-black berries after the first frost as it softens the skins and helps to release the juices. (You can get round this by picking early and freezing at home instead.) Neither animal nor vegetable, mushrooms are

fungi and the largest living organisms on Earth, some reaching three miles in length. Wild mushrooms grow across most of the UK and parks and woodlands are a good place to start. Autumn is the prime mushroom picking time when most of the good edible varieties appear. Always take a knife when foraging for fungi, so you can cut them from the base rather than pulling them out of the ground. This prevents damage to the mycelium (root-like threads) that allow them to regenerate. Grill them, stuff them, add them to soups, stir-fries and pies, or fry with wild garlic and parsley. Rogers Mushrooms is a guide to identifying the best edible species, and even an app for on the hoof identification using your mobile phone.

Rowan to damson, rose hip to blackberry, jam to wine, foraging trips can be bountiful and nutritious. However, make sure you only take what you need and always be sure on your identification of potential foraged foods and remember if in doubt leave it out!

Pickled Blackberries

Damson wine

Instructions for 1 gallon of Damson Wine (4.5 Litre) ● Add 4-6 lb (1.8 -2.7 Kg) Damsons into a fermenting bucket, add 1.3 Kg (3lbs) of ordinary sugar (granulated household white) ● Pour on 2 Litres of boiling water and stir with a plastic or metal spoon until the sugar is dissolved. ● Top up to 4.5 Litre with cold water and wait until at room temperature. ● Add Pectolase as per instructions and yeast and stir again. ● Stir daily for 4-6 days. ● Strain through a funnel and muslin bag into demi-john and top up to 4.5 litre with cold water. (You may want to pre measure and mark the outside of the demi-john) Fit the airlock with water to the mark and leave to ferment out of direct sunlight at a steady temperature (Ideally 20-22C) ● When the bubbling has stopped (usually about 2-3 weeks) leave for 2-3 more days then syphon the liquid into the bucket leaving sediment behind. Rinse out the demijohn and pour the wine back into the demi-john and leave for another week. Syphon into clean wine bottles and leave for another 2 weeks before sampling. ● Ideally leave for 2-3 months as the wine will improve with ageing.

Makes one 750ml jar. ● 150ml red-wine vinegar ● 180ml water ● 15 juniper berries ● 2 bay leaves ● Shaved skin from 1 small orange ● 75g caster sugar ● 1 tbsp flaky sea salt ● 320g fresh blackberries, gently washed and left to dry ● Cook everything bar the blackberries on a medium-high heat until the sugar and salt dissolve and the liquid is just coming to a boil. Take off the heat and leave to cool completely. ● Put the blackberries in a sterilised jar then pour over the cooled liquid, making sure the berries are fully submerged. ● Leave at room temperature for five days, by which time they’ll be ready to eat. Store in the fridge for up to three months.

Sloe Gin

● 1 Bottle gin ● 1 lb granulated sugar ● 1 lb sloes (frozen for 3 days then defrosted) ● Defrost the sloes in a Kilner Jar overnight, add the sugar and gin and seal the lid. Shake well and shake daily for a week or until all the sugar is dissolved. Leave to steep for 2 months shaking occasionally. Strain through muslin or kitchen towel and bottle when clear.

OCTOBER Now that the weather is getting colder, it is time to mentally prepare for winter.

Part of the way to do that is to make a house more cosy…that way it looks and feels warm inside even if it’s cold outside.

Most of these ways are easy and inexpensive, so hopefully some of them will help you your home more cosy, too.

How To Make Your Home More Cosy

Use Textured Fabrics Textured fabrics such as faux fur, chenille and velvet are soft to the touch and make a space feel warm.

Draping a faux fur throw or a chenille blanket on your sofa makes it look like a cosy place to curl up. And if your feet get cold, there’s a blanket within easy reach, or try swapping out some of your cushion covers for ones with textured fabric.

Hang Curtains Along a similar line, adding curtains to your space will help to soften it and make it feel more cosy. This is part of the reason canopy beds appeal to so many people. Installing curtains all the way across the wall gives a similar feel to the room in general.

Paint A Dark Colour Using dark paint on the walls can help to make a room feel cosy…just like light paint helps to make it feel open and airy. So if you’re going for the snug, warm feel, try going darker. If you really want to go all out, paint the ceiling dark too

Provide Comfortable Seating This may seem a little obvious, but it’s hard to have a cosy room if there aren’t any comfortable spots to sit. To me, there is nothing more inviting than a chaise (even the cat thinks this is the best seat in the house!) However, a comfortable sofa, love seat or chair will also work.

Adding an ottoman that people can put their feet up on is an extra bonus.

Put Down Area Rugs There’s something about having softness under your feet that makes you feel cosy. If you have hard floors in the seating area of your room or around the bed, consider putting down an area rug to add some comfort (it’s hard to get out of bed if you know your feet are going to hit a cold floor!)

Create a Reading Nook Set up a corner in the room with a comfortable seat, a reading light, some good books, and a place to set a drink. It will look so cosy, you may even find yourself reading more, Somewhat enclosed spaces, like a window bench in a office, seem to have built-in cosiness…take advantage of it by making it a good place to sit.

Let the oven do all the hard with this simple chicken traybake recipe.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.

Quarter the tomatoes and place them in a large baking dish or roasting tray (roughly 25cm x 30cm). Peel the onions and cut into large wedges, then deseed and roughly chop the peppers. Add all these to the tray along with the chicken thighs.

Squash the unpeeled garlic cloves with the back of your knife and add to the tray, then pick over the thyme leaves and sprinkle over the paprika.

4 large ripe tomatoes 2 red onions 1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper 6 free-range chicken thighs , skin off, bone out 4 cloves of garlic ½ a bunch of fresh thyme 1 teaspoon smoked paprika olive oil

Add 2 tablespoons of oil, the balsamic and a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Toss everything together really well to coat, then spread across the tray, making sure the chicken isn’t covered by the vegetables.

Roast for around 1 hour, or until the chicken is golden and cooked through, turning and basting it a couple of times during cooking with the juices from the tray.

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Roasting garlic cloves whole in their skins makes them really sweet – don't waste that lovely soft flesh, squeeze it out and enjoy it!

Serve the tray bake with a lovely green salad on the side. You could also buddy it up with a little rice, polenta or a loaf of crusty bread to mop up the juices.

Members of ‘Holywell Art Club’ will be holding their Autumn exhibition at ‘The Meeting Room’ St Peters Church, Rose Lane. Holywell.

The exhibition will be on show throughout October. There will be a good variety of approximately 30 pictures on display.

All work will be available to purchase.

Holywell Art Club meets every Wednesday from 10am - 2pm at Pentre Halkyn Community Centre.

Next month’s eagerly-anticipated Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (26-29 October) will - quite literally - get off to a spectacular flying start.

As a dramatic curtain-raiser to four days of thrilling againstthe-clock action in the legendary Welsh forests, this autumn’s FIA World Championship event blasts off on Thursday evening (26 October) with a new speed test, staged under the floodlights at Tir Prince Raceway in the seaside resort of Towyn.

And, to provide fans with some dramatic opening night entertainment, the Visit Conwy Tir Prince stage will feature two dramatic jumps. These will see the latest generation of more powerful World Rally Cars flying through the air as hard-charging drivers race to gain an early advantage over their adversaries.

As a mouthwatering taste of what is to follow, a crowd-pleasing one-mile course has been designed to include a slalom section and hairpin, as well as the two eye-catching jumps.

Competitors will first complete one high-speed lap of the Tir Prince trotting track - more traditionally used for horse racing - before tackling a tricky section set out in an adjoining area. Special viewing areas have been created and big screens installed, guaranteeing visitors do not miss any of the high-octane action.

Mold Town Council will be opening up the doors to the Town Hall for visitors to come along and view a large display of photographs and memorabilia showing the history of Mold over the last 150 years, along with the historic Council Chamber which will be open to visitors. The event is free of charge for the public to view on Friday 6th October 10.00am – 6.00pm & Saturday 7th October 10.00am – 1.00pm, at Mold Town Hall, Earl Road, Mold CH7 1AB. Local Historian David Rowe will also be on hand to share his knowledge about the town and will be giving short talks on both days.

October We're into October and it's time to clear the summer bedding and think about brightening the garden before the dull days of winter.

Well here we are in October we must now think of clearing the summer bedding as it is beginning to look sad and we must get our autumn and winter flowering plants into the ground.

There are plenty of great looking violas, pansies and heathers with their bright colours to brighten up those dull winter days. So let us now create some colour and interest to take us through those periods until the spring.

Buy your bulbs for spring Talking of spring, if you haven't already bought your bulbs, now is a great time. There is a huge selection in garden centres and nurseries of tulips varying in colour from white through to nearly black, not forgetting those gorgeous reds, oranges, stripes, short, tall, early and late varieties. It is good to look out for all the species as well.

There are many small species of crocus, iris, tulipa, alliums, anemone, fritillaria, lily-of-the-valley and plenty of other exciting bulbs. The prices vary depending on what you are looking for, but they are not always as expensive as you think to plant up the odd container on the patio or by the front door.

If you use established planting that is already in there, and may be add heathers, euonymous, or skimmia japonica to give colour all season long. Bulbs shooting up through from dwarf narcissi in late February through to late flowering tulips and narcissi in early May, you can create your own wonderful colour creation all of your own.

Creating a boundary Hedges are the perfect solution for providing a naturallooking boundary to a garden; they are more colourful and interesting than a fence and are perfect for encouraging wildlife into the garden.

There are lots of plants suitable for providing a hedge, barrier or screen - whether you want evergreen or deciduous, formal or informal. Now is a great time to plant a hedge, especially if you want an inexpensive one. There is a wide range available bare-rooted such as beech, hawthorn and hornbeam plants, which are less than those bought in pots. But, if you want an evergreen hedge, then these plants are only available in containers.

Get digging!

The most important thing to bear in mind is good initial preparation - after all you will want the hedge to grow thick and fast, and not become bare at the base. Start by digging out a trench the length of the hedge, at least 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

clay soil and incorporate plenty of organic matter such as well-rotted manure, compost, composted bark or planting compost. Mix the excavated soil with lots more organic matter and even some bonemeal or controlled-release fertiliser, and refill the trench firming the soil as you go.

Before planting, water the plants well - either give container plants a good soaking or place bare-rooted plants in a bucket of water for half an hour or so.

Then it's just a matter of planting at the right distance apart: most types should be planted 18 inches apart although conifers and more vigorous types can be planted two to three feet apart.

For a really thick barrier you can even plant a doublestaggered row. To help ensure a bushier hedge, trim back sideshoots and even cut off the top couple of inches of deciduous hedging plants and privet. After planting, water in well and be prepared to water during dry spells for the first year. Adding a sprinkling of fertiliser over the soil in the spring will help make growth even stronger.

It is hard to beat the value of conifers for the winter garden. There are so many colours and shapes from the pencil-like Juniperus scopulorum Skyrocket to the spreading pines, firs and the ground covering prostrate junipers. There are types that grow from several inches high to several feet according to your garden. There are also dozens of evergreen shrubs which, like conifers, not only come in various shades of green but there are ever-yellow and ever-silver as well as variegated types. The latter will certainly help lift the spirits on dull and dark days.

Plant some wintry flowers and evergreens that produce colourful berries.

PROPERTY NEWS • PROPERTY NEWS • PROPERTY NEWS Ban on letting agent fees may have ‘unintended consequences’ industry fears In certain areas of England, mainly the South East, it is reported that some agents charge as much as £700 to process a tenancy application. The Government has decided to take action, but rather than simply capping fees at a fair level, they are instead seeking to ban the fees charged by agents to tenants, in England.

Letting agents undertake a number of rigorous checks to determine whether an applicant is suitable for tenancy. There is also a mandatory right to rent check required to establish if the landlord can legally let their property to the tenant. Failure to complete this check can result in a hefty fine and letting to someone who you knew didn’t have a right to rent may result in a prison sentence. The cost of such checks is currently borne by the tenant, but if the Government’s proposal is passed into law, this practice will have to cease.

Industry experts are concerned that the proposed fee ban may give rise to ‘unintended consequences’, as some agents may choose to cut corners to save cost, therefore exposing landlords to higher risk. For more responsible agents, however, the only choice will be to pass on the charge to landlords, who will then want to increase the rent to recover those costs. This will affect loyal tenants the most, as they will end up paying extra throughout their whole tenancy, rather than just a fair, one-off amount at the start.

A separate consultation is already underway with the Welsh Government, which claims it will “introduce a bill to prevent unfair fees being charged to tenants and prospective tenants” in Wales.

Do I need an inventory for my rental?

Following the introduction of Tenancy Deposit Schemes by the UK Government, the need for a strong inventory and schedule of condition, to protect both landlords and tenants, has become abundantly apparent.

Without one, landlords will struggle to recover genuine costs for damages and conversely, tenants could find themselves being charged for damages they did not cause.

Ideally produced by an ARLA Propertymark Inventories accredited company, the best inventories comprise both a thorough video and a detailed report, and provide indisputable evidence as to how the property was presented at the start of the tenancy, therefore protecting both landlords and tenants in equal measure.
