Stand at the top of Glas Maol and it feels like you’re on the edge of vast wilderness. In the middle, there’s decent amount of easier ski terrain, though not much for absolute beginners. 3. NEVIS RANGE Scotland’s newest ski area, boasting legendary terrain and offering fabulous views. Highlights 3 Expert off-piste terrain is what sets this resort apart. 3 Spectacular “high mountain” views from the summit. 3 Notable lack of queues on all but the busiest days. 8 Beginner slopes are low and can suffer from poor snow. CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN Historically Scotland’s most popular ski resort (pic above), with snowsure top bowls. The right side serves mostly intermediate terrain whereas over to the left, you’ll find the steeper Ciste sector for advanced skiers. Cairngorm Mountain is also not far from Speyside where you can sample dram of whisky, and just 10 minutes away from Britain’s only free-ranging reindeer herd. 5. LECHT 2090 The best beginner slopes and learning facilities in Scotland. Highlights 3 Family-friendly resort for kids and beginners. 3 3 Often quiet even when nearby Cairngorm is crowded 8 Low altitude can mean poor snow quality Closest airports Inverness Airport 50 mi (1 hour drive) Aberdeen Intl. Airport 50 mi (1 hour drive) may be one of the smallest Scottish ski areas but it’s a popular choice for families, mainly due to its low lift ticket prices. Stay safe this Halloween

After your little princesses and mini cowboys are all dressed and their trick or treat bags are firmly in hand, it’s time to go over some trick or treat safety tips so you and your children will have an enjoyable and safe Halloween experience.

1. Go during safe trick or treat times

You don’t have to wait until it is pitch-black outside. The ideal time is after an early dinner and just before dusk when you can keep better track of your children and are able to see others you may encounter on the street. Besides, the first person there gets the best sweets!

2. Steer clear of masks

While masks are a fun part of many costumes, wearing one can sometimes impair a child’s vision. By using face paint, it is easier for your child to see where they are going and they won’t have to lift their mask when speaking to someone. If your child absolutely must wear a mask, make sure it’s a snug fit, is ventilated and has large enough eyeholes so they can see all around them.

3. Be visible

Try to choose costumes that are brightly coloured so that they are easier to see in the dark. If they really want a dark costume, apply some reflective strips. Glow sticks or glow necklaces also aid visibility.

4. Never go alone

Make sure children are accompanied by an adult at all times. Discreetly adding some identification information to their costume or on a bracelet will help if they happen to wander off.

5. Walking tips

Be sure that your children understand simple traffic rules, such as stopping and looking both ways before crossing the road. Inform your children that road safety rules still apply.

6. Only knock on doors that you know

Encourage your children to only call on homes where they know the inhabitants. If a home is dark or has no Halloween decorations, this is one to avoid!

7. Don’t go inside

Remind your little ones that they should never enter anybody’s home while trick-or-treating. If the homeowner is persistent, inform them to simply turn and walk away.

8. Stay on track

9. Say “No!”

If your children are old enough to go out in a group without you, be sure to designate a time for their return. Teach them to say “no” if a stranger offers them a lift in their car or to take them to a Halloween Party.

10. Eat the sweets when you get home

Make sure your little goblins know that trick or treating is for gathering sweets, not eating them as they receive them. If they’re tempted to have a taste before you’ve had a chance to inspect it, pack a goody bag with some of your own sweets so they have something to snack on if they can’t wait until they get home.
