CONTEXT
Motivations Behind Parental Verbal Abuse Jennifer (M.I) Loh, Flora Calleja, and Simon Lloyd D. Restubog’s paper titled ‘Words That Hurt: A Qualitative Study of Parental Verbal Abuse in the Philippines’ revealed that one of the motivations behind this verbal abuse could stem from some unmet expectations of parents. Thus, children may be seen as some kind of investment for social mobility and one prominent value of children as perceived by parents is the help they provide. When the opposite happens or when the child does not live up to his or her parents’ expectations, it is likely that the parents get frustrated and may utter words that express regret over the discursive behaviour the child has. One of the tangible form of these expectations come in academic achievements.
