Nach einem erfolgreichen Start im Jahr 2017 und einer noch spektakuläreren zweiten Auflage im vergangenen Jahr, kommt das größte Gravity-Mountainbike-Festival der Welt von 12. bis 16. Juni 2019 zum dritten Mal nach Innsbruck - dem einzigen Tourstopp in Europa.

Crankworx kann man sich wie ein Musikfestival vorstellen. Das Nova Rock kennt in Österreich beispielsweise jeder. Crankworx ist ähnlich, nur mit mehr Bikes, mehr Bergen und mehr Mitmach-Charakter.

Ursprünglich stammt Crankworx aus Whistler, Kanada, wo auch heute noch die Mutter aller Crankworx Festivals mit rund 300.000 Besuchern stattfindet. Neben Österreich und Whistler gibt es mit Rotorua im Frühjahr einen weiteren Stopp in Neuseeland.

Crankworx is a bit like a music festival. Everyone knows Woodstock. Crankworx is similar, but with lots more bikes, lots more mountains and lots more opportunities to participate.

The festival was born in Whistler, Canada, where the mother of all Crankworx events continues to attract hundreds of thousands (and counting!) visitors every year. Besides Austria and Whistler, Rotorua in New Zealand is the third stop of the World Tour in spring.

Crankworx Innsbruck unites the very best mountain bike athletes in the world and lets them compete in six different events. All of them are disciplines where supreme bike handling skills are crucial. Spectacular moves and even world firsts are not a rare occurance at this festival.

Seit 2017 gastiert Crankworx in Innsbruck, dem einzigen Austragungsort in Europa. Letztes Jahr pilgerten 20.000 Zuschauer in den Bikepark Innsbruck, um die Stars der Szene live zu erleben, um Augenzeugen von unglaublichen Tricks zu werden oder um selbst bei den zahlreichen (Side) Events mitzumachen.

Innsbruck, the only stop in Europe, has been hosting Crankworx since 2017. 20,000 people attended last year's edition at Bikepark Innsbruck to see their idols in real life, experience stunning tricks up close or to participate in one of the numerous (side) events at the festival.

Es könnte keinen besseren Auftakt in die Festival-Woche geben. Hoch über Innsbruck, beim Speicherteich zwischen Mutters und Götzens, wird am Mittwochabend gehöriger Luftstand mit Style und Panorama vereint.

There couldn't be a better start to the festival week. Style, massive air-time and a spectacular mountain backdrop will be united high above Innsbruck, at the lake between Mutters and Götzens, on Wednesday evening.

90 Minuten haben die Fahrer Zeit, ihre Bikes in der Luft so quer wie möglich zur Fahrt- bzw. Flugrichtung zu stellen. Eine Jury kürt die besten "Whips" anhand der Kriterien Luftstand, Style, Whip-Grad und Zurückstellen des Bikes in Fahrtrichtung bei der Landung.

Riders have 90 minutes to throw their bike as sideways as possible to the direction of flight. A jury will judge their efforts based on amplitude, style, degree of whip and return of the bike into a straight position before hitting the landing.

Für Fotografen und Bike-Enthusiasten sind die Official European Whip-Off Championships presented by SPANK in Innsbruck ein Traum. Doch selbst unbedarfte Zuschauer werden sich am imposanten Schauspiel der Fahrer vor der noch imposanteren Kulisse des Inntals und den umschließenden Berggipfeln nicht satt sehen können.

100% DUAL SLALOM INNSBRUCK Eine "Old School"-Disziplin feiert ihr Comeback.

Der Dual Slalom war schon in den frühen Zeiten des Mountainbike-Sports ein Publikumsmagnet. 2019 wird das intensive Rennen bei allen CrankworxStopps ausgetragen.

Der Auftakt in Rotorua hat bereits gezeigt, dass der Dual Slalom nichts von seiner Attraktivität eingebüßt hat. "Es ist schnell, kurz und wenn du blinzelst ist es vorbei", fasst Fahrer Cody Johnson (USA) das Format zusammen. Rund 20 Sekunden Rennzeit pro Lauf lassen keinen Raum für Fehler.

Wer am Ende ganz oben stehen will, der muss die abwechslungsreiche Strecke aus Wellen, Anliegern und offenen Kurven bewältigen - und dabei schneller sein als sein Gegenüber am Parallelkurs. Nach jeweils einem Lauf pro Seite geht's für den Sieger in die nächste Runde.

DUAL SLALOM

Gleich wie bei der RockShox Innsbruck Pump Track Challenge sind die Zuschauer beim Dual Slalom direkt am Geschehen und können ihre Favoriten lautstark anfeuern. Ob BMXer, Fourcrosser, Downhiller oder Slopestyler - wer am Ende die Nase vorne hat, das lässt sich auch nach Rotorua nicht abschätzen.

An old-school discipline celebrates its comeback.

Dual slalom was already seriously popular during the infancy of mountain bike sport. 2019 will see parallel racing take place at all Crankworx venues.

The first race this year at Rotorua showed that dual slalom has not lost a single bit of its attractivness.

"It's fast, it's quick and when you blink it's over," rider Cody Johnson (USA) sums up the format. About 20 seconds race time leaves no space for errors.

The rider who wants to claim the top spot needs to conquer the diverse course made up of rollers, berms and open corners — and be quicker than his rival on the parallel track. After one run on each side the winner advances to the next round.

Just like at the RockShox Innsbruck Pump Track Challenge, spectators are super close to the action and can root for their favorites. If BMX, fourcross, downhill or slopestyle riders have an edge on the dual slalom course, no one knows. Not even Rotorua could give an answer to that. It's an open battle and it's set to be a thrilling one.

Der Dual Slalom ist neben dem Downhill die zweite offene Disziplin. Teilnehmen kann jeder Fahrer ab 15 Jahren, der sein Können zeigen möchte. Am Donnerstag steigt das Finale der Profis, am Samstag jenes der Amateure.

Besides the downhill, dual slalom is the second discipline that's open to everyone. All riders who are over 15 years old can sign up for the event. The pro final takes place on Thursday, the amateur one on Saturday.

Whilst some are still amazed that you can conquer a course of rollers without pedalling, the protagonists of Crankworx have perfected the technique of "pumping".

Der Pumptrack an der Talstation im Bikepark Innsbruck liefert donnerstagabends die Kulisse für einen garantiert heißen Showdown. Denn im Kopf-anKopf-Duell auf dem gespiegelten Kurs gehen die Fahrer ans absolute Limit in Sachen Kurvengeschwindigkeit. Das ist auch notwendig, denn in der Regel entscheiden Zehntelsekunden über Sieg oder Niederlage.

The pump track at the bottom station of the gondola at Bikepark Innsbruck will provide the stage for a showdown guaranteeing plenty of thrills and spills.

Riders will push the limits of what is possible in terms of cornering speed.

That is very necessary, as usually only tenths of a second decide between victory and defeat in the head-to-head battles on the mirrored course.

Zwei große Vorteile gibt's beim Pumptrack-Event für Zuschauer: Der Kurs ist komplett einsehbar - es entgeht kein Moment der Action und die Fahrer sind gerade einmal eine Armlänge entfernt. Für die Stimmung ist das natürlich förderlich. Die Flutlicht-Atmosphäre trägt noch weiter dazu bei.

The pump track event offers two big benefits for specators: you can see the complete course from one position and riders are just an arm's length away.

This proximity to the riders creates an amazing atmosphere at the race. Sunset and floodlights will further contribute to a great setting.

Speed? Style? Das ist bei diesem Event keine Entweder-Oder-Frage. Hier zählt beides. Nur wer Tricks über die Sprünge zeigt und dann auch noch schnell ist, hat beim Speed & Style eine Chance auf eine Top-Platzierung. Pro gezeigtem Trick gibt es - je nach Schwierigkeit - eine Gutschrift auf die Fahrzeit.

Speed? Style? It's not a question of one or the other at this event. It's either both or nothing. Only if you show off your trick arsenal over the jumps and tackle the course as fast as you can will you have a shot at the top spot in Speed & Style. Every trick — rated according to its difficulty — will result in a time bonus on your run.

Das volunteer team tirol ist keine Ein-Event-Brigade, sondern eine echte Gemeinschaft, die bei vielen Großereignissen in Innsbruck unverzichtbar ist. Über 200.000 Einsatzstunden hat das Team seit 2012 geleistet und außerordentliches Engagement gezeigt.

Der Kurs im Bikepark Innsbruck bietet das Maximum an Vielfalt. Er besteht aus Dirtjump-Elementen, Pumptrack-ähnlichen Anliegern und Wellen, aus offenen Kurven wie beim Dual Slalom und - um dem Event noch mehr Würze zu verleihen - aus einer Streckenkreuzung. Dabei springt ein Fahrer über den Kurs des anderen. Spannung verleiht dem Speed & Style nämlich auch sein Parallelformat.

Zuschauer dürfen sich auf zwei gleichzeitig ausgeführte Tricks in einem Sprung freuen und können mit freiem Auge sehen, wer die meiste Geschwindigkeit mitnimmt.

The course at Bikepark Innsbruck offers maximum variety. It contains dirt jump elements, pumptracklike berms and rollers, open corners like at the dual slalom and — to add even more spice to the event — an intersection where the two courses cross and one rider jumps over the track of the other. The head-to-head format adds extra thrill to Speed & Style. Spectators can look forward to two tricks at the same time on one jump and will be able to tell which rider has the speed advantage.

Slopestyle gehört zum Beeindruckendsten, was der Mountainbike-Sport zu bieten hat. Der Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship, zu der Crankworx Innsbruck zählt, ist die Krönung dieser Disziplin.

Diese Bühne ist den 14 Besten der Welt vorbehalten und sie wissen sie zu nützen. Sie schießen sich über riesige Rampen in die Luft und zeigen Trick-Kombinationen, die man maximal in einem Computerspiel für möglich halten würde. Doch nur wer das Level über alle acht Features im Kurs halten kann, der wird von der Jury mit hohen Noten belohnt. Der perfekte Run ist eine Gratwanderung für die Fahrer und ein Nervenkitzel für alle Zuschauer.

Slopestyle is among the most impressive things the sport of mountain biking has to offer. The Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship, which Crankworx Innsbruck is part of, represents the pinnacle of the discipline. Only the 14 best riders are invited to this stage, and they certainly know how to use it. Huge booters catapult the athletes into the air, where they show trick combinations you would have only thought possible in a computer game. But be warned: riders need to maintain this level on all eight features of the course to be rewarded with high marks. The perfect run is a tightrope walk for riders and a thrill for spectators.

Nicholi Rogatkin (USA) und Brett Rheeder (CAN) sind die zwei dominierenden Kräfte im Slopestyle der letzten Jahre. Während der Kanadier mit seiner blitzsauberen Technik glänzt, zieht der Amerikaner für unmöglich gehaltene Tricks brachial durch. 2019 sieht erneut nach einem Showdown der beiden aus. Für Rogatkin spricht, dass er in Innsbruck bereits zwei Mal siegte und Rheeder beide Male auf Rang zwei verwies. Rheeder hingegen kommt mit dem Selbstvertrauen des Sieges von Rotorua nach Tirol. Lachender Dritter im Bunde könnte King of Crankworx-Favorit Tomas Lemoine (FRA) sein.

Nicholi Rogatkin (USA) and Brett Rheeder (CAN) have been the dominating forces in slopestyle over the past years. Whereas the Canadian is known for his clean technique, the American pulls off unheard of tricks in a powerful manner. 2019 looks like it is set to be a rematch of last year's showdown.

Rogatkin has the advantage of two Innsbruck victories, both times putting Rheeder into second place.

Rheeder travels to Austria with all the confidence from his win at Crankworx Rotorua. The lucky third guy in this exclusive circle could be King of Crankworx contender Tomas Lemoine (FRA).

IXS INNSBRUCK DOWNHILL PRESENTED BY RAIFFEISEN CLUB Der Höhepunkt zum Abschluss des Festivals heißt Downhill.

Hier zählt nur eines: die schnellste Zeit bergab. Ganz ähnlich wie auf der Streif lassen es die Athleten hier ordentlich laufen, um am schnellsten im Ziel zu sein. Die neue Strecke in Mutters braucht den Vergleich mit der härtesten Abfahrt der Welt nicht scheuen: Felsen, Wurzelteppiche und weite Sätze gehören zum Charakter dieses Downhill-Kurses. Mensch und Material werden auf die Probe gestellt.

Aus der Sicht des Zuschauers ist Downhill vor allem eines: spektakulär! Die Fahrer rauschen mit Spitzengeschwindigkeiten von 70-80 km/h über ruppiges Gelände und meistern Stellen mit dem Rad, bei denen man zu Fuß überlegt, wie man am besten steigt. Besonders interessant sind die Unterschiede in der Linienwahl.

Der Downhill ist der teilnehmerstärkste Event des Crankworx Innsbruck. Rund 280 Fahrer nehmen die Strecke in Angriff.

Unter ihnen die besten der Welt, aber auch zahlreiche Hobby-Athleten, die versuchen an die Zeiten ihrer Idole heranzukommen. Tracey Hannah (AUS) und Danny Hart (GBR) waren in Innsbruck schon zweimal siegreich. 2019 werden die Karten aber neu gemischt, denn der Track in Mutters ist für alle Neuland.

The highlight to round off the festival is the downhill. Only one thing counts here: the fastest time down the hill. Very similar to alpine ski racing, athletes hammer down the mountain with incredible speed on a track that is not for the faint hearted. The new course at Mutters will feature all the ingredients a true downhill track needs: roots, rocks and big jumps. A true proving ground for rider and bike alike.

From a spectator's point of view, downhill is first and foremost one thing: spectacular! Riders rush past at top speeds of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour over rough terrain that is pretty much impossible to walk down, let alone ride. It's particularly interesting to watch the different line choices in sections like these.

The downhill is the event with the most participants at Crankworx Innsbruck. Around 280 riders tackle the unforgiving course. Amongst them are the best in the world as well as numerous amateur athletes who try to get as close to the times of their idols as they can. Tracey Hannah (AUS) and Danny Hart (GBR) have both been victorious at Innsbruck twice. 2019 will be a totally different game though, as the brand new track at Mutters will be new territory for all riders.

Von Kinder-Coachings am Pumptrack bis hin zu den beliebten "Ride with a Pro"-Sessions sorgt der Downhill Verein Tirol gemeinsam mit dem lokalen Organisationsteam der innsbruck-tirol sports GmbH an jedem Crankworx-Tag für lässiges Nachwuchs-Programm.

Die Expo Area ist das pulsierende Nest im Zentrum der Crankworx Strecken.

An der Talstation im Bikepark Innsbruck wird eine bunte Zeltstadt errichtet, die 30 Ausstellern Raum bietet, ihre Marke, Produkte und Goodies zu präsentieren.

Vom Bekleidungshersteller bis zum Bike-Produzenten ist hier alles dabei, was die Herzen von Bike-Afficionados höher schlagen lässt.

Mit der neuen Downhill-Strecke in Mutters wird die Expo Area 2019 noch ein Stück mehr belebt. Denn die Profi-Teams und ihre "Pits" sind dann nicht weit. Interessierte Zuschauer können bei ihren Lieblingsequipen vorbeispazieren und den Mechanikern live zusehen, wie sie mit ihren Zauberhänden werken.

Die Expo Area ist eine Flaniermeile mit Erlebnisfaktor. Hier starten gemeinsame Aus- und Testfahrten, Stars erfüllen Autogrammjägern ihre Wünsche und immer wieder finden Side-Events direkt zwischen den Ständen statt. Übrigens: Hungrig oder durstig bleibt hier keiner dafür ist mit Streetfood (Burger-, Kartoffel- und Wrap-Spezialitäten) aus Österreich gesorgt.

The Expo Area is the vibrant nest in the center of the Crankworx courses. It's a colorful tent village located directly at the bottom station of the cable car at Bikepark Innsbruck. 30 exhibitors will present their brands, products and goodies, from bike fashion producers to bike manufacturers. There will be something to make the heart of every bike enthusiast beat faster.

Thanks to the new downhill course in Mutters, the Expo Area will be even more pulsating than ever before. The pits of the pro teams are now just a short walk away and an ideal place to take a peek into their workspaces. Take a stroll and witness the mechanics' magic live, preparing the bikes of your favorite riders.

Within a short period of time you'll notice: the Expo Area is a boulevard with an adventure touch to it. It's the place where shared rides and test rides take off. Stars of the mountain biking scene fulfill the dreams of autograph hunters and quite often one of the side events takes place right between the exhibitors' tents. By the way, thanks to Austrian street food (burger, potato and wrap delicacies) you will not leave this place thirsty or hungry.

Piloten, die am Innsbrucker Flughafen landen möchten, benötigen eine eigene Einschulung. So knapp stehen die Berge an der Stadt. Was für den Flugverkehr eine Herausforderung ist, das genießen Innsbrucks Einwohner und Gäste. Die Stadt ist ein Mekka für Outdoor-Menschen. Flaniert man durch die City, bekommt man das Gefühl in einer Ansammlung von Bergsteigern, Skifahrern, Kletterern und Mountainbikern gelandet zu sein.

Aktive Leute, die andererseits das urbane Flair der 130.000-Einwohner-Stadt zu schätzen wissen. Innsbruck war bereits Gastgeber für Olympische Winterspiele, den Air+Style Snowboard Freestyle Contest, die Kletter- und UCI Straßenrad WM, uvm.

Pilots who want to land at Innsbruck airport need a special permit beforehand. That's how close the peaks are to the city. What may be a challenge for aviation is a reason for tourists and residents alike to choose Innsbruck. The city is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

CRANKWORX UND INNSBRUCK CRANKWORX AND INNSBRUCK Frau Seiler-Lall, Crankworx und Innsbruck. Wie sehr gehören die zwei Begriffe mittlerweile zusammen?

Die vergangenen zwei Jahren haben gezeigt, dass Crankworx und Innsbruck perfekt zusammenpassen.

Das Event bietet Strecken auf Weltklasseniveau, eine Location mit unglaublicher Aussicht, großartige Stimmung bei den Fans und eine perfekte Durchführung seitens des lokalen Organisationsteams. In Innsbruck gibt es eine große Bike-Szene und mit Crankworx feiern die besten Biker der Welt für eine Woche den Sport in unserer Stadt.

Herr Spazier, auf welche Neuigkeiten dürfen sich die Fans heuer freuen?

Mit dem Dual Slalom feiert ein neuer Bewerb und absoluter Publikumsliebling der bisherigen World Tour-Stationen seine Premiere in Innsbruck. Neben der Sportaction mit den besten Mountainbikern der Welt stehen auch heuer wieder Kidsworx und diverse Side-Events – erstmals auch eine E-Bike-Challenge – und natürlich die Party Nights auf dem Programm. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage bieten wir heuer zudem erstmals VIP-Tickets an.

Frau Seiler-Lall, wie wichtig ist Crankworx für Innsbruck?

Crankworx spiegelt das Image von Innsbruck als moderne, internationale und aufregende Stadt wider und verstärkt dies zusätzlich. Das Event hat letztes Jahr 20.000 Besucher begeistert und sorgt so natürlich für touristischen Mehrwert und regionale Wertschöpfung. Auch garantiert Crankworx globale mediale Präsenz und Aufmerksamkeit. Was aber für mich besonders wichtig ist: Crankworx trägt wesentlich zur Imagebildung bei. Dank Crankworx erhielt Innsbruck innerhalb kürzester Zeit einen fixen Platz auf den weltweiten Bike-Landkarten, ist also bei Veranstaltern, Bike-Herstellern und natürlich auch in der Bike Community selbst enorm präsent. Crankworx ist darüber hinaus ein wichtiger Motor, der auch weiterhin zur Entwicklung des professionellen Bike-Angebots in Innsbruck beiträgt.

Herr Spazier, was macht für Sie ein erfolgreiches Crankworx Innsbruck aus?

In erster Linie zufriedene, strahlende Gesichter. Ich hoffe, wir haben auch im dritten Jahr Glück mit dem Wetter und können die Bewerbe ohne Verschiebungen

Mrs. Seiler-Lall, Crankworx and Innsbruck. How well do those two words go together?

The past two years showed that Crankworx and Innsbruck are a perfect match.

The event offers courses on a world class level, a location with a stunning panorama, a great atmosphere amongst fans and a perfect implementation by the local organizing team. Innsbruck has a big bike scene and Crankworx is the place to celebrate the sport with the world's best riders for a week.

Mr. Spazier, what can fans look forward to this year?

The premiere of the Dual Slalom — a new event and absolute crowd puller at the World Tour stops — will take place. Looking beyond the main events, we have Kidsworx, several side events (including an e-bike challenge for the first time) as well as the party nights. Due to great demand we are offering VIP tickets for the first time this year.

Frage an beide: einer ihrer Freunde kann mit Crankworx noch gar nichts anfangen. Wie würden Sie ihn motivieren im Juni in den Bikepark Innsbruck zu kommen?

Seiler-Lall: Die Argumente sprechen für sich, auch wenn man selbst kein Biker ist: Crankworx steht für die besten Gravity Biker weltweit, für actionreiche Contests, ausgelassene Festivalstimmung und ein großartiges, buntes Rahmenprogramm. Außerdem ist der Tour-Stopp in Innsbruck 2019 die einzige Gelegenheit, Crankworx live in Europa mitzuerleben, noch dazu mit dem neuen Dual Slalom als eigene Crankworx-Championship-Disziplin.

Spazier: Crankworx ist das größte Gravity-Mountainbike-Festival der Welt und mit dem Event in Innsbruck haben wir den einzigen Stopp in Europa. Wer spektakuläre Tricks auf dem Fahrrad sehen möchte, die man sonst nie zu sehen bekommt, soll mit uns die Athleten anfeuern und anschließend durch die Expo-Area schlendern und vielleicht auch selbst die neuesten Trends aus dem Bike-Bereich testen. Auch wenn der Name „Crankworx“ im ersten Moment zwar hart klingen mag, so verbirgt sich dahinter ein buntes Festival für die ganze Familie. Den Beinamen „das ultimative Mountainbike-Erlebnis“ trägt Crankworx also ganz zurecht.

Mrs. Seiler-Lall, how important is Crankworx for Innsbruck?

Crankworx reflects and boosts the reputation of Innsbruck as a modern, international and exciting city. The event attracted 20,000 visitors last year and therefore has touristic value and contributes to the local economy. Crankworx guarantees global media coverage and attention. But what's even more important in my opinion: Crankworx contributes to the Image of Innsbruck. Thanks to Crankworx, Innsbruck has established itself as a top mountain bike destination for riders from around the world. The city is now known amongst organizers, bike manufacturers and is very present within the bike community. Furthermore, Crankworx is an important engine for the further development of Innsbruck's bike infrastructure.

A question for both of you. Let's assume one of your friends doesn't know Crankworx. How would you motivate him/her to visit Bikepark Innsbruck in June?

Seiler-Lall: The arguments speak for themselves, even if you are not a rider: Crankworx hosts the world's best gravity mountain bikers, action-packed contests, a great festival atmosphere and big, colorful side events. The 2019 tour stop in Innsbruck is the only chance to experience Crankworx live in Europe, especially exciting with the new Dual Slalom as a Crankworx Championship event.

Spazier: Crankworx is the world's biggest gravity mountain bike festival and the event in Innsbruck is the only stop in Europe. If you want to see spectacular tricks on a bicycle you will not see anywhere else, then join us cheering the athletes, followed by a stroll through the Expo Area to maybe try out the latest trends in the bike industry. Even if the name "Crankworx" sounds a little harsh at first, it is a colorful festival for all the family. The subtitle "the ultimate experience in mountain biking" fits Crankworx very well.

Mr. Spazier, what makes a successful Crankworx Innsbruck for you?

First of all happy, satisfied faces. I hope we are lucky with the weather in the third edtion and we can enjoy the events without postponements and any serious injuries. With the side events we want to attract spectators to sports, mountain biking and outdoor activities.

If we can do that, I am more than happy.

BIKEPARK, TRAILS, SKATEHALLE UND STREET SPOTS BIKE PARK, TRAILS, SKATE HALL AND STREET SPOTS Innsbruck - so ehrlich muss man sein - kann (noch) nicht mit hunderten Kilometern an Trails aufwarten.

Dafür ist das offizielle Netz noch zu jung. Doch was an Streckenlänge fehlt, das macht das Angebot durch Abwechslung dreimal wett.

Geprägt durch die Bike-Pioniere, die Vertriders, war Innsbruck jahrelang für den Nordkette Singletrail bekannt. Die Bike-Bergsteiger hatten ein steiles, enges und loses 1.000-Höhenmeter-Monster als Trainingsstrecke geschaffen, für das selbst Kapazunder wie Sam Hill knapp 10 Minuten benötigten. Für alle anderen war und ist es eine Challenge an der Grenze zur Fahrbarkeit.

TRAILS & TRACKS

In den letzten Jahren hat sich aber einiges getan und der Nordkette Singletrail ein paar Meter Luftlinie entfernt einen flowigen Enduro-Trail-Bruder bekommen - den Arzler Alm Trail. Mit der Einkehrmögichkeit auf der Arzler Alm ist der "AAT" mittlerweile der After-Work-Ride schlechthin.

Let's be honest, Innsbruck does not (yet) offer hundreds of kilometres of trails. The city's official mountain bike trail network is simply too young for that. However, what it lacks in length it makes up for in variety.

Take the Nordkette Singletrail for example. For a long time this super steep, narrow and loose monster of a track was synonymous with mountain biking in Innsbruck. It was built by the legendary Vertriders, served as a training ground and took even a certain Sam Hill almost 10 minutes to get to the bottom. The track with a whopping drop of 3,000 vertical feet still remains a challenge for everyone.

The last few years has seen a lot of movement within the mountain bike network around Innsbruck. Just a few meters from the Nordkette Singletrail, a flowy enduro trail brother was built. The Arzler Alm Trail with one of the nicest rest places at the hut of the same name is a perfect after-work ride.

Expandiert hat auch der junge Bikepark Innsbruck auf der Muttereralm. 2018 errichtete Tom Prochazka den Flowtrail "The Chainless One" und heuer soll noch eine Downhill-Strecke folgen.

Many may not be aware of it, but Bikepark Innsbruck is still very young. Opened in 2016 with initially two trails, it got a new flow trail − "The Chainless One" − by Tom Prochazka last year and will see a new downhill track built in the course of 2019.

Die Suche nach Airtime wird in Innsbruck am Dirtpark der RIP BMX Crew am Baggersee Rossau oder in der Skatehalle Innsbruck belohnt. Wegen seiner Betonwellen als Street Spot sehr beliebt - speziell rund um Crankworx - ist der Landhausplatz mitten in der Stadt.

If you are looking for airtime, the RIP BMX crew dirt park at the lake in the Rossau district and the Innsbruck skate hall are the right place for you. If you are into street riding, check out the Landhausplatz in the middle of the city. Its concrete waves are very popular amongst riders.

Die Trails in Innsbruck selbst sind schon Abwechslung pur, nimmt man die Gebiete in unmittelbarer Umgebung noch dazu, dann vervielfacht sich der Fahrspaß noch einmal. Genau das ist der Sinn der Bike City Card. VOM STOLPERBIKEN ZUM YOUTUBE HIT FROM "STUMBLE" BIKING TO YOUTUBE WONDERS

EVOLUTION

Als Crankworx 2017 zum ersten Mal in Innsbruck gastierte, machte es sie zur Bike-Hauptstadt des Landes. Kurz davor wurde der Bikepark Innsbruck auf der Muttereralm eröffnet, etwas später der Arzler Alm Trail gebaut. Was mit Crankworx als Initialzündung passierte, war aber nicht der Start des Mountainbikens in der Tiroler Landeshauptstadt.

Mittlerweile ist ein Großteil der Vertriders auf E-Bikes umgesattelt. Die bevorzugten Wege sind weiterhin technisch, doch das mediale Rampenlicht haben sie weitgehend der nächsten Generation überlassen.

Für diesen muss man rund 25 Jahre zurückblicken.

Denn Innsbrucks Mountainbiker waren legendäre Pioniere in dem noch so jungen Sport. Dem Studium sei Dank fand sich eine Gruppe Outdoor-Begeisterter zusammen, die ihre Erfahrung von Bergsteigen und Skifahren auf das Radfahren übertrugen. Christian "Picco" Piccolruaz, Christoph Malin und Paul Mair waren die aktivsten, besser bekannt unter dem Namen "Vertriders".

Und die neue Generation macht den Wegbereitern alle Ehre, hält den Pionier-Status hoch - wenn auch auf etwas andere Weise.

Allen voran Fabio Wibmer. Der Wahl-Innsbrucker fasziniert die Welt als Multi-Talent am Bike und fesselt gemeinsam mit seinem WG-Kollegen Elias Schwärzler mittlerweile über zwei Millionen Abonnenten bei YouTube. Crankworx Rotorua Whip-Off-Gewinner Peter Kaiser und Downhill-Weltcup-Racerin Paula Zibasa tragen ebenso dazu bei, dass die Innsbrucker Biker über die Alpenrepublik hinaus bekannt sind.

Und das beste: in ihrem Sog stehen dank dem Downhill Verein Tirol dutzende Youngsters in den Startlöchern.

Das Kollektiv hievte um die Jahrtausendwende die überschweren Bikes auf die Schultern und probierte jeden als unfahrbar geltenden Gipfel rund um Innsbruck. Nicht selten wurden mittels 3.0 Gazzaloddi-Reifen, 24-Zoll-Hinterrad und Gustav M-Bremsen Klettersteige in Zentimeterarbeit befahren. Daher der Name "Stolperbiken", der jedoch nichts am Respekt vor den Leistungen der Vertriders schmälern soll.

Die Vertriders waren in den 2000er-Jahren dermaßen bekannt, dass ihnen selbst Szene-Größen wie Darren Berrecloth und Brett Tippie einen Besuch abstatteten.

When Innsbruck hosted Crankworx for the first time in 2017, it made the city the capital of mountain biking in Austria. Bikepark Innsbruck was opened just a little earlier. The Arzler Alm Trail followed shortly afterwards. Crankworx was definitely a strong impulse to mountain biking in Innsbruck, but by far not the start of it.

To go back to the roots, we need to look back 25 years. Innsbruck's mountain bikers were legendary pioneers of the sport. Thanks to university life, a group of outdoor enthusiasts came together and put their alpine climbing and skiing know-how to use on two wheels. Christian "Picco" Piccolruaz, Christoph Malin and Paul Mair were the most active, better known as the "Vertriders".

The name speaks for itself. At the turn of the century, they shouldered their super-heavy bikes and guinea-pigged every peak around Innsbruck that was deemed unrideable. Quite often the 3.0 Gazzaloddi tires, 24-inch back wheel and Gustav M brakes were ridden down routes designed for rock climbing. That's where the name "stumble" biking came from — but is not meant to disrespect the huge achievements of the Vertriders in any way.

In fact, during the 2000s the Vertriders were so popular that even big names like Darren Berrecloth and Brett Tippie made it across the pond to ride in Innsbruck.

Now the new generation has taken over and is continuing where the Vertriders left off.

The likes of Fabio Wibmer are pioneers of the sport as well, but in their own kind of way.

The Innsbruck resident impresses the world by being multi-talent on a bike and has managed to gather more than 2 million subscribers on YouTube together with his flatmate Elias Schwärzler. Crankworx Rotorua Whip Off champion Peter Kaiser and downhill world cup racer Paula Zibasa are two more examples of why Innsbruck's bike community is well known beyond the borders of Austria. And best of it all: thanks to the Downhill Verein Tirol, dozens more little shredders are eager to leave their mark just as their idols do.

Schon mal was von einer “losen Kommunikationsplattform” gehört? Wenn nicht, dann herzlich Willkommen bei #MTBInnsbruck! Die Gründer dieser Initiative hatten als Grundgedanken die Vernetzung aller Mountainbikebegeisterten in und um Innsbruck, ohne dabei auf die klassische Vereinsstruktur zurück zu greifen und trotzdem als Gemeinschaft auftreten zu können. Und es ist ihnen gelungen.

Have you ever heard of a "loose communication platform"? If not, we would like to introduce you to #MTBINNSBRUCK! The main idea of its founders was to create a network for all mountain bike enthusiasts in Innsbruck with no strings attached, but still appearing as a single community. And they succeeded in doing so.

Als Zusammenschluss hat die Bike Szene Innsbruck während der letzten zwei Jahre eine starke Stimme aufgebaut, die den Austausch mit der Stadt oder auch die Kommunikation zwischen den Bikern wesentlich erleichtert. So kann gemeinsam an der BikeZukunft gearbeitet werden. Neben regelmäßigen Treffen, um Updates und neue Ideen auszutauschen, finden offene Shape Days zur gemeinsamen Trailpflege statt. Während Crankworx bringen wir uns mit Side-Events ein und realisieren die temporäre Trailverbindung zwischen Festivalgelände und dem Stadtkern. Beim alljährlichen Herbstfest an der Nordkette kommen noch mal alle zusammen, stoßen auf eine großartige Saison an, bevor die Bikes in ihre Winterquartiere verschwinden.

During the last two years we have managed to create a unified voice, which is now being heard by city officials and the general public, representing all bikers in and around Innsbruck. Together we aim to shape a bright future of mountain biking in our hometown.

Im Vordergrund bei allen Aktivitäten steht neben Spaß vor allem die Bewusstseinsbildung für einen respektvollen Umgang (egal ob Biker oder Nicht-Biker). So steht #MTBInnsbruck explizit für gegenseitigen Respekt, vorausschauende und rücksichtsvolle Fahrweise und ein harmonisches Miteinander. Auf diese „Grundsätze“ wird auch immer wieder bei den Treffen und über mediale Kanäle aufmerksam gemacht.

Dadurch, dass es keiner offiziellen Mitgliedschaft bedarf, steht es jedem frei sich zu einem Projekt oder auch längerfristig einzubringen. Das einzige was man braucht, ist Motivation. Motivation, sich für seinen Sport und für ein gutes Miteinander einzusetzen, denn zusammen geht mehr.

Meetings are organised to exchange new ideas and collective shape days keep the trails well maintained. During Crankworx we host side events and organize a temporary trail connecting the festival venue with the city. At the end of the season we invite you to join us for our annual Herbstfest, celebrating a great season while drinking a few beers, before we put our bikes into hibernation for the winter.

One of our primary goals – besides having good times – is creating awareness for respectful interactions between bikes and non-bikers. #MTBInnsbruck stands up for mutual respect and riding in a careful and responsible manner. These guidelines are regularly communicated during open meetings and through different media channels.

Without any need of official membership, everyone can join us. Whether it is for one single project or a long term commitment. The only thing you need is passion for the sport and motivation to stand up for a respectful community. Together everyone achieves more.

EINSEINSERTRAIL

Opened in 2016, the EinsEinserTrail in the Stubai Valley is a delight for every trail and enduro rider. It's a challenging ride over forest soil, root carpets and short rock gardens. Sometimes steep, sometimes flowy, winding its way down to the valley.

Cornering is mostly backed by berms to carry momentum. Small jumps and drops line the trail, which can be used to generate airtime or just be rolled over. After three kilometers you'll reach a wooden ramp with drops of three different heights, the biggest one measuring two meters. The last part after the snack station "Zum Weber Lois" is digger-shaped, a bit wider and something to just shred. The steep berms carved into the even steeper final slope should be entered high to carry maximum speed towards the finish. All in all an incredible trail with all sorts of features that has been designed for ambitious mountain bikers.

ZWEIZWEIERTRAIL Der 2017 eröffnete ZweiZweierTrail ist etwas zahmer als der EinsEinser und bietet neben vielen flowigen Abschnitten auch einige interessante anspruchsvollere Kurven. Er startet direkt im Bereich des EinsEinsers und schlängelt sich anfangs unter der Elferbahn hinab. Hier sind die Bremsen nur wenig im Einsatz, meist kann man es ziemlich "tuschen" lassen, über nette kleine Sprünge segeln und das Bike in den Anliegerkurven umlegen. Etwas steiler geht es im Mittelteil zu. Hier wechseln schnell aufeinanderfolgende Kurvenkombis mit kurzen Kickern, die einen, je nach Speed, mehr oder weniger weit in die Luft schießen. Im anschließenden steilen Wald ist der Trail meist etwas schmäler. Hier ist präzises Steuern gefragt.

Es folgen speedige Abschnitte auf der Schipiste, bevor es schließlich in den Wald geht und der letzte flowige Abschnitt abgeritten werden kann, bevor man oberhalb der Jausenstation "Zum Weber Lois" in den EinsEinserTrail mündet.

The younger brother, ZweiZweierTrail, opened in 2017 and is a bit more gentle: lots of flowy passages combined with some challenging bits. It starts directly at the EinsEinser and winds its way down below the Elferbahn cable car. No need to use the brakes here, just shred, float over small jumps and push the bike into berms. The middle part is a little steeper, with corner after corner and short kickers where you can either send it or scrub it. It's all about bike control here. Some fast passages on the ski slope take you to the flowy parts in the final forest, before you join the EinsEinser just above the snack station "Zum Weber Lois" for the last slope down to the finish.

Der 2016 eröffnete EinsEinserTrail im Stubaital lässt das Herz eines jeden Trailund Endurobikers höherschlagen. Grundsätzlich bietet er anspruchsvolles Fahren über Waldboden, Wurzelteppiche und kurze Steinpassagen. Mal eher steil, dann wieder kurvig und flowig schlängelt er sich vom Elfer-Wandergebiet ins Tal. Die Kurven sind großteils als Anlieger überhöht angelegt, sodass der Speed aus der Kurve mitgenommen werden kann. Immer wieder kommen kleinere Sprünge und Drops, die jedoch auch überrollt werden können. Nach ca. 3km laden drei unterschiedlich hohe Holzrampen zum Droppen ein. Der höchste der Drops misst ca.

2m. Der letzte Abschnitt nach der Jausenstation "Zum Weber Lois" ist baggergebaut, etwas breiter angelegt und ladet zum Bolzen ein. Die steilen Anliegerkurven im noch steileren Schlusshang sollten hoch angefahren werden, um den maximalen Speed ins Ziel mitnehmen zu können. Alles in Allem ein Wahnsinnstrail, der alle Stücke spielt und für den ambitionierten Biker konzipiert wurde.

LIVE DABEI LIVE EXPERIENCE Die Liste an Sport-Großereignissen in Innsbruck ist lang. Zu den größten Events zählen die beiden einzigen Olympischen Winterspiele Österreichs 1964 und 1976. Ebenfalls zweimal gastierten die Paralympischen Winterspiele und einmal die Olympischen Jugend-Winterspiele. Zu den Highlights im Sommer gehören die Austragung der Fußball- & Volleyball-Europameisterschaften und in jüngster Vergangenheit die UCI Straßenrad- und Kletter-Weltmeistschaften. Ein wahrer Besuchermagnet ist der jährliche Stopp der Skisprung-Vierschanzentournee mit einem fahnenschwingenden Menschenmeer auf der Bergiselschanze. Das nächste Großereignis findet mit den Winter World Masters Games bereits 2020 statt.

The list of major sports events in Innsbruck is a long one. The biggest ones were definitely the two only Winter Olympics in Austria in 1964 and 1976. Innsbruck has played host twice to the Winter Paralympics and once to the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Amongst highlights in summer are the soccer and volleyball European championships and most recently the UCI Road and IFSC Climbing World Championships. A real crowd puller is the annual stop of the ski jumping Four Hills Tournament at Bergisel with a sea of banner-waving fans. The next major events are the Winter World Masters Games taking place in 2020.

WINTER Neun Skigebiete und 260 Pistenkilometer sind in der Olympia Skiworld rund um Innsbruck zusammengefasst und sind mit einem einzigen Ticket erreichbar. Zwei davon - Nordkette und Patscherkofel - befinden sich dabei in unmittelbarer Stadtnähe. Zwanzig Minuten von Innsbruck entfernt liegt die Olympiaregion Seefeld mit mehrfach ausgezeichneten Langlaufloipen.

Die Berge rund um die Stadt sind beliebte Skitouren-Ziele und Eiskletter-Spots und im ehemaligen Olympia-Eiskanal in Igls kann man den Nervenkitzel einer Bobfahrt mit bis zu 90 km/h erleben.

Nine ski areas and more than 160 kilometers of ski slopes are united in the Olympia Skiworld around Innsbruck and are accessible with just one ticket. Two of them — Nordkette and Patscherkofel — are located right outside the city.

Twenty minutes from Innsbruck is the Olympia region Seefeld with its award-winning cross-country skiing trails.

The peaks surrounding Innsbruck are popular ski touring and ice climbing spots. If you are looking for a special thrill, take a run down the Olympic bobsleigh track at speeds up to 55 miles per hour.

Für ersteres bildet der öffentliche Verkehr eine ideale Ausgangsbasis um einen Tagesausflug auf das Hafelekar oder eine mehrtägige Hüttenwanderung zu machen. Freunde der Vertikale können sich auf Klettersteigen, -gärten, alpinen Routen oder im Kletterzentrum Innsbruck ausleben. From A as in American Football to W as in waterball, summer activities in Innsbruck are diverse. You'll find everything from individual to group sports, from ball games to outdoor activities. Thanks to its location in the middle of the Alps, the top three activities in Innsbruck are hiking, climbing and biking. Public transport makes for a perfect infrastructure for everything from short hikes on Hafelekar to multi-day mountain hut loops.

Friends of rock walls will find heaven in the numerous via ferratas, climbing gardens, alpine routes and the Innsbruck Climbing Centre. Cyclists can enjoy a whole variety of tracks from easy cruising to adrenaline-packed bike park sessions. More on that on page 27.

Old but gold. Den Trail bin ich schon so oft gefahren, dass mir jede Wurzel und jeder Stein bekannt ist - es wird trotzdem nie langweilig. Auch mein Lieblingsplatzl, um mit den Kids vom Downhill Verein Tirol zu trainieren. Anlieger, Sprünge und Wurzeln - der Trail hat alles zu bieten.

Old but gold. I have ridden this trail so often that I know every root and every stone — but it still doesn't get boring. It's also my favorite place to practice with the kids from the Downhill Verein Tirol. Berms, jumps and roots — this trail has it all.

PFLICHTSTOPPS MUST DO'S

Nicht nur die Bewohner Innsbrucks wissen ihre Heimat zu schätzen, sondern auch Touristen. 3,3 Millionen Nächtigungen verzeichnete die 130.000-Einwohner-Stadt letztes Jahr. Viele der Besucher wollen vor allem eines sehen: das Goldene Dachl.

Der mit feuervergoldeten Schindeln gedeckte Erker ist das Wahrzeichen Innsbrucks. Von dort kann man die Maria-Theresien-Straße nicht verfehlen, die Flaniermeile und das Zentrum der Stadt. Das südliche Ende markiert die alleinstehende Triumphpforte. Geschichte pur ist das prunkvolle Schloss Ambras, der Kontrapunkt dazu die futuristische Skisprunganlage Bergisel. Aus der Feder der gleichen Architektin entstammen die Haltestellen der Hungerburgbahn, die schon zum Wahrzeichen der Stadt geworden sind.

Not only Innsbruck's inhabitants enjoy their city: last year tourists spent 3.3 million nights in the regional capital of Tyrol. Most of them come to see one sight: the Golden Roof. This bay window with its golden tiles is Innsbruck's most popular landmark. From there it's a short walk onto Maria-Theresien-Strasse, Innsbruck's grand boulevard and city center. The Triumphal Arch marks the southern end of this main shopping street in the city. Witness pure history at the magnificent Ambras Castle or the futuristic style of the Bergisel ski jump. It was designed by the same architect as the Hungerburg funicular's stations, which have become a symbol of the city themselves.

Mountainbiker kennen den Platz meist schon: das Hitt & Söhne, der vielleicht beste Platz für ein After-Ride-Bier. Noch höher schlürft man seine Erfrischung auf der Seegrube, dem höchsten Biergarten der Stadt (1.905m). An heißen Tagen ist der Baggersee Rossau eine beliebte Anlaufstelle. In der Studentenstadt Innsbruck erfreuen sich junge (Olive: vegan), hippe (Ludwig: Burger) und ausgefallene (D-Werk: Döner auf Bambus) Lokale großer Beliebtheit. Traditionelles wie die "Eiterbeule" serviert die Buzihütte.

Mountain bikers probably already know the best place for an after-ride beer: Hitt & Söhne. Want to sip your refreshment even higher? The Seegrube is the city's highest beer garden (6,250 feet).

On hot days Lake Rossau is the place to be. Thanks to Innsbruck being a student city, young (Olive: vegan), hip (Ludwig: burgers) and unusual (D-Werk: doner kebab on bamboo) restaurants are trending. Don't count out the traditonal places like the Buzihütte with their delicious cheese-and-meat speciality with a disgusting name: "abscess".

Swinging shovels and rolling dirt is the motto. You can bet on the RIP BMX crew to be there for jump sessions on bright summer days. Bonus: Lake Rossau is nearby for a refreshing dip. If you are lucky there might even be a BBQ and bonfire at the dirt park to round off a perfect day.

Pumptrack, Speed & Style oder doch Slopestyle - nicht nur während Crankworx, sondern auch so, gibts dort oben nur gute Zeiten mit guten Freunden. Mein Favorit ist definitiv der Slopestyle Kurs!

Crankworx is just pure fun and the courses are really cool — doesn't matter if it's Pump Track, Speed & Style or Slopestyle.

Also before and after Crankworx the venue is a great place to have good times with friends. My favorite is definitely the Slopestyle course!

Lieblingsplatzerl über den Winter. Definitiv der beste Ort, um trotz Schnee Zeit am Bike zu verbringen. Und immer wenn’s dann frischen Neuschnee hat, geht man untertags powdern und Abends auf eine gemütliche Session in die Halle.

Nestled between 6,000-foot peaks, located in the Inn Valley, Innsbruck enjoys a very privileged location. From every corner in the city you cannot help but notice that the mountains are omnipresent. But even destinations out of sight are easily accessible.

Innsbruck main station is one of the most frequented railway stations in Austria as it serves as a major hub from east (Budapest) to west (Zurich) and north (Munich) to south (Milan/Venice/ Rome).

Innsbruck's location is especially ideal for sports enthusiasts. Seasons are pronounced: winters are generally cold, summers are generally warm.

Snow is usually plentiful on the north side of the Alps. And if you are eager to go biking and bad weather moves in, it‘s just a short hop over the Brenner Pass to the Vinschgau region in the north of Italy, where it‘s usually drier.
