Stonyhurst’s rich literary heritage and unique history make it the perfect setting for what we hope will be the finest Literature & Film Festival in the North of England.

The aim of a Stonyhurst education is to form young people into the best version of themselves, reflecting our motto – ‘Quant Je Puis’. The festival programme features a number of the College’s distinguished alumni, including David Barnes, international Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, and Samantha Leach, English teacher, who studied the music composed for the Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings series as part of her dissertation at Durham University.

Over the last 425 years Stonyhurst has been home to, and the inspiration for, some of history’s literary greats. The Stonyhurst Literature & Film Festival offers the perfect platform to share with visitors the College’s strong literary connections.

Our unique venue enhances the impact of the wonderful programme of speakers.

Where better to listen to the life and works of Simon Callow, a prominent Shakespearian actor, other than the home of Shakespeare’s First Folio? Immerse yourselves in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, where Stonyhurst and the surrounding Ribble Valley are said to be the inspiration for the imagery of Middle-earth.

The Stonyhurst Collections and the Old Chapel Museum will be open throughout the festival and feature an array of first editions, including some of the great works in literary history, which we are proud to share.

Festival Team’s Welcome We are thrilled to launch Stonyhurst’s first Literature & Film Festival this summer and welcome a diverse audience to the College to share in our fascinating literary heritage, as well as a programme of captivating authors, speakers and cinema.

Our aim was to establish an event which celebrates the College’s literary connections, promoting this outstanding venue and attracting visitors from across the country to Lancashire’s jewel in the crown, the stunning Ribble Valley.

With the help of our main festival partner, HIPPO Motor Group, as well as support from a number of revered businesses across the North West, we are committed to showcasing this area of unrivalled splendour and promoting the ‘Lancashire experience’.

The newly founded Stonyhurst Literature & Film Festival promises to be a unique cultural celebration of the arts. We are deeply grateful to our festival sponsors, namely Media Village and Viva PR, as well as the support of

We are also delighted to welcome Blackwell’s University Bookshop as the festival booksellers.

Situated in the More library, the bookshop will be available throughout the festival.

The festival will culminate in a final celebration on Saturday evening with an open-air cinema screening of the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, in the magnificent grounds of the College.

A Brief History of the College

Stonyhurst is one of Britain’s leading Catholic boarding schools, with over 400 years of history, set in a magnificent Grade 1 listed building.

The College was founded in St Omers, France, in 1593 to educate the sons of English Catholic families, at a time when Catholic education in England was prohibited.

Since its relocation to the North West of England in 1794, Stonyhurst has become the thriving co-educational establishment it is today.

Our motto

‘Quant Je Puis’

(‘As much as I can’) remains Stonyhurst’s overarching principle.

The College has a long history of nurturing men and women of individuality, generosity and service. Catholic martyrs, war heroes, politicians, rebels, writers, scientists and actors number among the former pupils; a testimony to the capacity of a Jesuit education to foster individual gifts and talents.

We take particular pride in those former pupils who died for their Catholic faith, and in the seven former pupils awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery.

Stonyhurst’s Literary Heritage Stonyhurst College is the oldest surviving Jesuit school in the world, dating back to a 1593 foundation in exile in the Spanish Netherlands.

It was a school for English Catholic boys, whose education in their native land was prohibited due to the religious laws of Elizabethan England. In 1794, the French Revolution made it necessary for the College to relocate, and it moved to its present site at Stonyhurst that summer, the laws restricting Catholic education in England and Wales having been relaxed.

Since 1593 the College has been associated with literature, printing, drama and poetry. During the reign of Elizabeth I, printing in England was tightly controlled by royal monopoly. The government was determined to control sedition, both political and religious, and was acutely aware of the threat posed by Catholic secret presses in England, which were sought out and suppressed. Catholic publishing was forced to move to European cities, such as Antwerp and Paris, where devotional and polemical books were printed and smuggled into England. The St Omers Press was set up at the College to meet the need for such books, and printed its first book, The English Martyrology, in August 1608. Today the St Omers Press produces books which reflect the College’s Jesuit ethos, and support the work of the College Collections.

such as dancing and choral music. At St Omers in 1689, there were two theatres and a large ‘Wardrobe for the Stage’, given over entirely to costumes and props for use in the plays. Many St Omers plays and public performance pieces, such as dialogue and poetry, have survived to this day, and the College holds some 2,000 pieces of drama and associated material from the early 17th century to the present day – the largest collection of performance-related literature relating to a single British institution in existence.

Much current academic research is focused on links between St Omers drama, and the work of contemporary English playwrights such as Shakespeare; the recent discovery of a First Folio of Shakespeare which was used at St Omers College in the 1630s, indicates that the Jesuits were performing Shakespeare’s works alongside writing their own material, from the 17th century onwards. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, strict rules were imposed on Jesuit institutions to prevent the appearance of women characters in plays. This was seen as necessary to avoid potentially ‘unseemly’ activities on the stage. Among a number of notable examples are the Stonyhurst performances of Macbeth in 1858, where Lady Macbeth was recast as ‘Uncle Donald’,

and Hamlet, a few years later, where Ophelia was transformed into ‘Eric’, her ‘brother’.

A number of famous authors and poets were either educated at Stonyhurst or taught here.

Arthur Conan Doyle arrived at Stonyhurst in 1868, aged nine, and left in 1875. He was known as Arthur Doyle, and his time at the

College was not particularly happy – his school reports describe him as ‘uncouth… noisy…snappish…sulky, stubborn...sullen’.

Doyle’s classmates left an impression on him; Patrick Sherlock was Doyle’s classmate and Arthur Watson was also at Stonyhurst in the year above, as were the highly intelligent Moriarty twins, John and Michael, and the less academically remarkable, Lestrade. The buildings and landscape of the College also influenced the writer; the Dark Walk in the Jesuit gardens features in The Hound of the Baskervilles, as does the façade and interior of Stonyhurst, ‘a long dark drive to where the house glimmered like a ghost at the farther end…hearty mullioned windows… a central block from which rose twin towers, ancient, crenellated…to left and right of the turrets were more modern wings…a long chamber with a step separating the dais where the family sat from the lower portion reserved for their dependents. At one end a minstrels’ gallery overlooked it.’

Gerard Manley Hopkins arrived in 1870 to study for the priesthood. He was entranced by the landscape of the Ribble Valley, describing the view from his room looking across to Pendle as ‘a beautiful range of moors dappled with light and shade.’ His priestly training finished, Hopkins returned to Stonyhurst in 1882 to teach Classics to the undergraduates, known as Philosophers. He wrote a few poems in this time, Ribblesdale, The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo, and a May verse, The Blessed Virgin Compared to the Air we Breathe, which was inspired by the installation of the Lady Statue on the Avenue in 1882.

Throughout the College’s history there have been numerous notable authors, poets and playwrights associated with the school, and the three Historic Libraries at Stonyhurst contain many rare literary works, including a First Folio, and first editions of Ben Johnson and Edmund Spenser. Many Irish poets and writers feature among the Stonyhurst alumni, including Richard Lalor Sheil, Joseph Mary Plunkett and Oliver Joseph St John Gogarty, reflecting the numerous Irish community educated at the College in the 18th and 19th centuries. More recent alumnus authors include the Poet Laureate, Alfred Austin, Vyvyan Holland, Paul Johnson, Basil Macdonald Hastings and many influential spiritual writers such as Philip Caraman SJ, Bede Jarrett and Martin D’Arcy SJ, while the libraries and archives attracted visiting writers such as Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh.

As College Architects, we have developed a strategic masterplan for the historic estate and look forward to continuing our work with the Stonyhurst community over the coming years.

Today, the College’s literary past continues to inspire and educate current generations of pupils, as well as writers and academics from all over the world.

The Stonyhurst Collections & The Old Chapel Museum Stonyhurst College has collected remarkable artefacts and books from its earliest days at St Omers, offering sanctuary to sacred medieval objects at risk of destruction during the Reformation. The first items arrived at the College in 1609; sumptuous 15th century cloth of gold and red silk damask velvet vestments, ordered by Henry VII for use in Westminster Abbey and taken by Henry VIII to the Field of Cloth of Gold. From the date of this acquisition, we make our claim to be the oldest museum in the Englishspeaking world.

Throughout the festival there will be the opportunity for visitors to see the College’s vast array of Historic Collections, reflecting the fact that the College has long been a global community.

Tickets to the talks throughout the Stonyhurst Literature & Film Festival include entry to the College’s 425 Exhibition, celebrating this momentous anniversary for the College and exploring Stonyhurst’s history through to the modern age – told through its Collections.

The Old Chapel Museum & Libraries The Stonyhurst Collections include a museum, three Historic Libraries and a rich study collection. These are housed together in a prominent part of the remarkable buildings at Stonyhurst, overlooking the 16th century Front Quad and the formal Avenue, although many artefacts are on open display around the College. The Museum and Historic Libraries are housed in a Victorian wing of the College, built in the 1850s to complete the grand frontage at Stonyhurst which had been left unfinished by the Shireburn family in the 17th century.

Many of the objects in the Collections bear witness to its unique place in English Catholic history, while others show how pupils and staff have made their mark on the world as scientists, travellers, archaeologists, antiquarians, soldiers, civil servants and missionaries all over the globe.

Notable paintings by artists such as Turner, Lely, Rembrandt and Rubens were bought for, or donated to, the College to embellish the walls and to inspire with their beauty.

Stunning 17th century Flemish baroque church silver, available to view in the Museum, continues to be used in our liturgies on feast days.

Former pupils and their families have bequeathed treasured possessions to benefit subsequent generations. Every item in the Collections and Historic Libraries tells a story; to teach, to intrigue, and to provoke searching questions about our past and the present world we inhabit.

Please note that due to the nature of a Grade I listed building, no disabled access is provided and access to the Museum incorporates different levels using stairs. Limited seating is available in the Museum.

Maximum capacity in the Museum at any time is 70 persons.

Fulfilling Your Ambition

Dr Janet Graffius has been Curator of Collections and Historic Libraries at Stonyhurst since 2001. She studied Art History at St Andrews University, and has worked with major public museums and collections since 1983, including the British Council and the National Trust. She has published widely in Britain, Europe and America on various aspects of the College Collections and Libraries, from medieval manuscripts and vestments, to Shakespeare and Jesuit Drama in The Times Literary Supplement, through to her more recent conservation work with Oscar Romero’s relics in El Salvador, for which she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of London.

Her specific area of research relates to the use and significance of relics and English Catholic material culture in the Early Modern period, which was the subject of her PhD at Aberdeen University, and for which work she was elected as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

She has appeared on a number of television programmes, including the BBC Treasures of Heaven with Andrew Graham-Dixon, and on a BBC Radio 4 series about Shakespeare with Dr Neil MacGregor of the National Gallery, among many other programmes.

Nigel Womack has been a professional hairdresser for fortysix years. Nigel has owned two thriving town centre salons since 1974 – but his creativity does not stop at hairdressing.

Since the age of fifteen, he has enjoyed writing a wide genre of literature. Most recently, Nigel has written and published the children’s fictional tale, The Angry Giant. This initial publication is to be followed every six months with further tales from the enchanted land of ‘Pawland’.

Nigel Womack’s first publication has received successful reviews and a nomination for The People’s Book Prize in Fleet Street, London.

Nigel’s other works include Tales from the Washbasin, due to be released in September 2019, and Hannah, a tragic narrative of a little girl sending messages, through poetry, to her parents from Heaven.

Nigel is also a keen pianist and songwriter, who has composed a variety of musical arrangements over the years.

Neil White is the author of twelve thrillers, all set in the North West of England. His fifth book, Cold Kill, spent five weeks at number one in the e-book charts in 2011 and was the third biggest selling e-book of that year. Andy will be reading from the book and discussing how it came to be written. “I seem to have run into the so-called ‘up-lit’ genre,” says Andy, “That wasn’t my intention: I just can’t do miserable endings.”

Andy worked as a theatre director initially, before travels in Asia prompted him to retrain as a teacher. He has taught English and Drama in India, Brazil, Vietnam, the Philippines and the UK. He now lives in England, and is writing full time.

In these days of ‘fake news’, can fiction actually bring us closer to the universal truths of humanity?

A seed planted by a chance comment in Austria when he was describing Durham at a meeting sponsored by the EU led to Martin’s Magical Module. Right from the start, his interest in Potter was linked to its connections with the university; a link made all the stronger when Durham Cathedral was used to film scenes for the first two films. It is also linked to aspects of his childhood: teachers in gowns; the importance of sport; houses; prefects; traditional food; steam trains; and even the weather!

Reading and re-reading; watching and rewatching; discussing and thinking about all things Potter with the Harry Potter generation, the idea of planning and teaching a module on the magical world grew. Whilst the decision to open with a Sorting Ceremony in the Great Hall of Durham Castle proved inspired, it also brought with it the two-edged sword of global publicity.

Though initially only an idea, and fearful that the module might prove commonplace, over the past ten years it has become increasingly clear that the Potterverse is not only rich in potential, it is also rich in importance. The moral messages embedded in and inspired by the text are deeply significant for us all. Though initially dismissed by some as trite and derivative, the impact of the series is unprecedented; and as the module moves into its second decade, the time is right to reflect on this literary phenomenon.

David Hatton Author The Return - 9/11 Fiction 3.00pm, Bayley Room, £6.50 David will explore the art of writing about real-life tragic events as a piece of fiction and the challenges of balancing a thrilling storyline, whilst remaining sensitive to the subject at hand.

He will read a passage from his own debut book, The Return, which follows the story of a family torn apart by its patriarch who faked his death in the 9/11 tragedy and returns a decade on to claim his life insurance.

He will also read an excerpt from his brand new novel, The Medium, which follows the story of atheist, Michael Walker, who is approached by a psychic who claims to know the whereabouts of his missing wife; can Michael widen his belief system in the quest to find the love of his life?

The scores are an intricately woven set of themes of impressive complexity, with each composer bringing a different dimension to Rowling’s oeuvre. Arguably the music is particularly striking for its smooth beauty, which rather spectacularly manages to remain even when illustrating scenes dripping with evil or laden with pain. The music manages brilliantly to suggest the wonder and enchantment of magic, the joys and fears of growing up and the struggle for good to triumph over evil. Samantha Leach is an English teacher and former Stonyhurst pupil who had the privilege of studying under Dr Martin Richardson at Durham University, where she opted for the famous ‘Harry Potter module’ and embarked on a dissertation on Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, looking at the music composed for both series.

By all logic, The Lord of the Rings should never have been filmed, especially not as a nine-hour trilogy, which was shot in its entirety over fifteen consecutive months. The author’s complex literary structure required a worthy musical equivalent. Thus it was crucial that Howard Shore managed to match the visual feast of Peter Jackson’s films, by vividly evoking the imagery of Middle-earth, a world where good and evil collide vehemently with sword and fire, and where the courage of even one person, no matter how small, can ‘shape the fortunes of all’. Writing Lancashire: Place as Character in the Novels of Jenn Ashworth

Jenn Ashworth was born in 1982 in Preston. She studied English at Cambridge and since then has gained an MA from the University of Manchester, trained as a librarian and run a prison library in Lancashire. She now lectures in Creative Writing at Lancaster University. Her first novel, A Kind of Intimacy, was published in 2009 and won a Betty Trask Award. Her second, Cold Light, was published by Sceptre in 2011 and she was chosen by BBC’s The Culture Show as one of the twelve Best New British Novelists. Her most recent novels are The Friday Gospels and Fell.

Focusing on her own published novels - all of which have been set in Lancashire - and the inspiration, research and writing process behind them, Jenn will give readings from her work and talk about what it is to write about Lancashire.

Saturday 17th August Emily Chappell Cyclist and Creative Writer Inscribing the Landscape: The Curious Connection between Cycling and Writing 10:30am, Bayley Room, £6.50 Emily Chappell is an author, adventurer, and an advocate for diversity in cycling.

She spent several years as a cycle courier in London before setting out to cycle across Asia; a journey that took her through some of the highest mountains, coldest winters and hottest deserts the continent has to offer. Having discovered a penchant for cold weather, she has completed winter journeys across Iceland and North America, enduring temperatures as low as -40°C. 32

More recently, she has distinguished herself in the field of long-distance self-supported bike racing, winning the Transcontinental Race across Europe in 2016, a feat that involved cycling nearly 4,000km in thirteen days.

Alongside her adventures, Emily has worked constantly to help other people realise their own ambitions, however lofty or humble they might be. She is a popular public speaker, has put together numerous events, workshops, rides and training camps, and worked for three years as a director of The Adventure Syndicate; an organisation that inspires, encourages and enables people (especially women) to challenge what they are capable of.

Emily is an award-winning blogger, whose work has featured in Vogue, National Geographic, The Guardian, and almost every cycling publication there is. Her first book, What Goes Around: A London Cycle Courier’s Story was published by Faber in 2016, and her second book, Where There’s A Will is due out in November.

11.00am, Academy Room, £8.50 As we mark the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of WW2, two remarkable Lancashire veteran sisters, now in their nineties, recall their father Colonel Owtram OBE and his compelling secret war diary, kept hidden whilst British Camp Commandant of a Japanese POW camp.

Patricia (96) served as a WRNS Special Duties Linguist & Interceptor and former BBC producer, and her sister Jean (93) served in the FANY / SOE as a Code & Cipher officer in Cairo and Italy and were both involved in code-breaking during the war. They are joined by historian Simon Robinson, who interviews them about their memories of the war, and their father’s experiences in the hands of the Japanese and his efforts to protect the POWs in his charge.

This was all carefully recorded in his wartime diary and kept hidden under pain of death. Now almost 75 years on, his historically important memoir has at last been published. This is a unique and rare opportunity to hear from war veteran sisters who both signed the official secrets act and their war hero father who was once High Sheriff of Lancashire.

The World of J.R.R. Tolkien

Sara Brown has been a high school teacher for twenty-five years and currently works full time in Rydal Penrhos School in North Wales, where she teaches English to ungrateful teenagers.

She also acts as a teaching and learning mentor in school, promoting and guiding the advancement of skills and continuing professional development in each of the teaching faculties.

Besides her BA (Hons) in English and History, Sara has a Master’s degree in International History from the London School of Economics, for which she wrote a thesis on The Problem of the Gold Standard in International Politics and Economics in the Nineteenth Century.

She completed her PhD in Literature at Salford University in 2013. Entitled From Abjection to Alchemy in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth Legendarium, the thesis explores the way in which Tolkien was responding to the anxieties of the post-war world in the mid-twentieth century, drawing on (amongst others) the theories of Julia Kristeva and Donna Haraway. She believes it’s a real page-turner. As an independent scholar, Sara has given a number of lectures at various conferences on subjects such as Tolkien, fantasy fiction and fandom - the latter being one of her guilty pleasures that she indulges in during all that spare time she does not have. She also hopes, one day, to publish her work on Tolkien.

Sara has worked at Signum University, based in the USA, since 2012 and is the Chair of the Department of Language and Literature.

Patricia Davies was recently awarded Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur in 2019 for recognition of her role in the preparation for D-Day.

Young Filmmaker Competition As part of the Stonyhurst Literature & Film Festival, we were delighted to launch the Stonyhurst Young Filmmaker Competition!

Open to young people aged between 18 and 25 years of age, this provided a fantastic opportunity for young filmmakers to showcase their skills to a wider audience.

Films have been judged for their creativity and content, as well as their technical ability.

Requirements stipulated:

The winning filmmaker will be announced on the evening of the open-air screening of Bohemian Rhapsody and will have their film showcased on the night of the performance!

The film should be between 15 and 20 minutes in length.

David Barnes David is an International Emmy Awardwinning filmmaker working in documentary and drama, producing emotionally engaging stories with cinematic production values. Recent credits include one hour documentaries; Young, Gifted & Broke for Channel 4 and For Folk’s Sake - Morris Dancing & Me for BBC4. David has a passion for analysing character driven narratives and understanding why they work - or don’t.

He is the recipient of other accolades including a Prix Jeunesse, Japan Prize UNICEF Award, a Rockie and three Children’s BAFTA nominations.

Emily Johnson Emily is a freelance floor runner working within the AD department on both film and television. Her role involves working closely with the cast, assisting the 1st Assistant Director and helping to communicate with everyone on set. Emily’s film credits include: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Men in Black, Aladdin, Paddington, Artemis Fowl and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Emily has also worked on Call the Midwife, Victoria, The Biggest Little Railway in the World and The Grand Tour.

There are no restrictions on themes or genres.

Genres can include animation, documentary, drama or live action.

The Judges Jim Cooke Jim owns a film production company and has been making short films for over 18 years.

He specialises in covering music festivals and tours, creating behind the scenes documentaries and films, and has worked with some of the world’s greatest artists including Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, George Ezra and Little Mix. Jim has an eye for film making and telling stories and loves to watch films as well as create them. He loves to see passion and ingenuity in people’s work and looks forward to seeing the offering from everyone.

The chic Little Tea Co. will be offering Lancashire’s finest food and drink, as well as tea, coffee and a variety of cakes throughout the Literature and Film Festival.
