Senior Speech Night

Speech Night Presentation 13th November 2015

Pupils, parents and staff enjoyed an evening of celebration at Senior School Speech Night. Many past pupils, together with their parents, came to receive their A level certificates from guest speaker, Sir Robert Dowling. GCSE and subject prizes were also awarded, together with prizes throughout the school for effort and achievement.

Senior School (including Sixth Form) Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Senior pupils enjoyed a weekend of camping at Kingsbury Water Park with a qualifying expedition, working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

An expedition assessor meets with the student teams before, during and after their expedition to assess their personal expedition skills and their teamwork.

The assessors have always been very impressed with the conduct and teamwork from the Highclare School groups.

Engineering at Work

ISA Success

L4 pupils visited the Birmingham Think Tank to attend an Engineering at Work event. They all had time to explore the museum and dress up in service uniforms.

Pupils also visited the planetarium and attended a workshop with graduates who are working at Rolls Royce. At the workshop the pupils worked in teams building pistons and testing them out to see if they would work. Everyone had a great time and learnt a lot from the ‘question and answer’ session at the end of the day.

Artists in the senior school have once again received recognition for their work in the Midlands ISA Art competition.

Music Pupils see The Last Tango and meet Flavia Pupils from the GCSE Music class visited the Birmingham Hippodrome to watch “The Last Tango”, starring Vincent Simone and Flavia Caccace from the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

After the show, some pupils met Flavia and were able to thank her in person for a stunning performance.

The group thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are now feeling inspired to “Keeeeep dancing”!

Pupils from the GCSE and A2 Music classes attended the BPM exhibition at the Birmingham NEC. The event is an annual exhibition of DJ equipment, amplification, music technology and sound recording. Pupils had a chance to try a wide variety of different equipment, expanding their knowledge and getting vital handson experience.

Visit from the Dogs’ Trust In November, a visitor from the Dogs’ Trust came to school and talked about the work they do with dogs and how that relates to ‘Born to Run’, the book we have been studying.

Keira, the Dogs’ Trust volunteer gave us plenty of information about what the Dogs’ Trust does and how they look after them. Keira also talked about the responsibilities that come with getting a dog. I can tell a lot of effort had been put into her visit and I am very grateful it was organised by both Highclare School and the Dogs’ Trust! At the end, Keira gave us all a Dogs’ Trust pen. Sophie Pillinger in U5 was awarded First Prize in the Photography category for her double-exposure image “Ophelia.”

Abbie Phelps, Harjot Kaur and Niamh Pemberton in U4 achieved Second Prize in the KS3 Group Category for their Lino prints “All about the Houses.”

Francesca Wood (L6) and Rachel Sanders (U5) also gained “Highly Commended” for their work in the Photography category. Congratulations to all our talented students.

Tectonics Conference Geography A level students enjoyed a fantastic day at a tectonics conference in London. Experts from UK universities spoke about recent seismic events and their impacts and gave advice on tackling examination questions.

Following the conference, a little retail therapy was needed and so we headed to Hamleys and the Christmas markets in Hyde Park. All arrived back in Birmingham at around midnight, much wiser and with plenty of shopping!

Senior School (including Sixth Form) Skills for the Workplace U5 pupils visited the nation’s largest skills and careers event at the NEC, the Skills Show, part of the senior school’s yearly careers’ programme. The event helps pupils think about careers options open to them in the future and this year had a new Future Skills Zone, allowing young people to see what skills could be in demand for future jobs. Top employers were there including NHS Careers, JLR, 02, Crossrail and Virgin Media. Pupils had a good afternoon walking around the stands, investigating what companies do, what skills are needed for different jobs as well as seeing a vast array of careers information.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

There was an excellent programme of speakers with backgrounds in medicine, journalism, business and law who talked to pupils about their career paths and what it’s like to work in these interesting and diverse fields. Nicola Moore from Birmingham LEA also informed pupils about parttime work – what is and what is not permissible and held a ‘drop in session’ over lunch in the School’s new Learning Centre.

L4 pupils travelled to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to watch a new production of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by C S Lewis, dramatised by Adrian Mitchell. They all thought that the huge puppets were amazing!

Festival of Remembrance

Senior House Poetry Competition All students in U3, L4 and U4 were invited to participate in a house poetry competition for National Poetry Day. The theme this year was LIGHT. Enrich with his winning poem for Lancaster

New Sixth Form Study Centre September 2015 saw the opening of the new Sixth Form Study Centre. This spacious, well equipped centre is a welcome addition to the fantastic facilities on offer to the Sixth Form at Highclare School. It is used by all the Sixth Form, before, during and after school. There are extensive ICT facilities, as well as wi-fi to support the use of iPads issued to all of the Sixth Formers.

On Saturday 12th November, Highclare School Sixth Form student James Johnson took part in the prestigious Festival of Remembrance, held at the Royal Albert Hall. After several dress rehearsals held over both Friday and Saturday, he proudly represented the Combined Cadet Force for the UK in front of the Royal Family and a worldwide TV audience on Saturday night.

History trip to London The U6 History group travelled to London to visit the Tower of London as part of their A level course on the Tudors. It was interesting for them to see all the places where so many of the historical figures that they have studied lived and died. The students then spent the afternoon experiencing the excitement of London at Christmas. They especially enjoyed the atmosphere at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and the lights on Oxford Street.

Junior News Junior Survival Day at Woodlands Activity Centre

Junior News J3 Celebrate Harvest Festival J3 went bonkers for conkers when they performed their wonderful Harvest Assembly to parents at Highclare Woodfield. In front of a beautiful display of donated produce, they sang songs, recited poems such as ‘When Daddy Carved the Turkey’ and presented many interesting facts about harvest traditions all over the world. The children at Highclare St Paul’s were equally enthusiastic when they dressed up and performed their Harvest Assembly to parents.

J4 Design and Technology – Money Containers The children in J4P have really enjoyed designing and making their own festive purses and wallets this term. With amazing sewing skills, they have joined their containers together carefully and attached buttons, press studs and Velcro so that they keep all their pocket money safe inside!

The Iron Man J5P and Q kick-started their first term by reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. They began by making their own Iron Man models and enjoyed spray-painting them in metallic colours. Many of their Big Write lessons were studying this book, re-writing the first chapter from the Iron Man’s point of view, creating a newspaper article about a sighting of the Iron Man and finally, writing a letter to a friend about the events in the story.

J4 Roman Assembly J4 at Highclare Woodfield have enjoyed learning all about the Romans. They designed their own mosaics, made their own Roman shields and, to top it all off, put on a spectacular performance in their assembly, ‘The Romans.’ The children sang beautifully, delivered their lines brilliantly and their costumes were sensational!

Taking Charge J5 pupils at Highclare Woodfield have been TAKING CHARGE of their own learning and researching different planets for their Science topic, ‘Out of this World’. The gardens at both of the Highclare Junior Schools offer a great opportunity for the children to gather materials for their topics, whether it be for collecting ‘minibeasts,’ or to make an artistic still life.

J6 Taster Day at Highclare Senior School In November, J6 students from Highclare St Paul’s and Highclare Woodfield enjoyed an exciting Taster Day at the Senior School. In their Science workshop the pupils tested two different types of chemical to find out if they were acid or alkali. They discovered that the two chemicals reacted together and the result was a Giant Hand! They worked out for themselves that a gas (carbon dioxide) must have been produced. The children had a fantastic time and showed that they are all budding scientists! In the HE room the children watched shortbread biscuits being made and then tasted the results. In the Astronomy class, the children were able to watch live links with the space station and watch a video of what daily life was like for astronauts in space, from eating to brushing their teeth. After a busy morning, all the children sampled delicious Senior School lunch in the Bistro. They were all very impressed!

Junior Sports Results - Sept To Dec 2015 Highclare Junior pupils have enjoyed a variety of sports experiences this term. Here are a selection of reports:

SWIMMING ISA Junior Swimming Gala (24th November 2015) Highclare enjoyed excellent success in the ISA Junior Swimming Gala. The girls won the overall category and the school will have two representatives at the Nationals.

HOCKEY ISA Hockey Tournament (Cannock 11th November 2015) Highclare took a mixed (boys/girls) team to Cannock Hockey Club where the regional ISA Hockey Tournament was being held. It was a great opportunity for Highclare to play some competitive fixtures against other ISA Schools. They began the tournament with an encouraging 1 - 0 defeat to Dixie Grammar School and then lost 4 - 0 to both Stafford Grammar and The Old Vicarage School. Highclare finished in joint 8th position drawing 1 - 1 against St. Wystan’s.

FOOTBALL U8s Football v The Royal School (Wolverhampton 5th November 2015) The U8s braved a very wet and soggy pitch with tough weather conditions to record a very good win, 3-0 over The Royal School, Wolverhampton. They played 9 a side on an expansive pitch at Highclare St Paul’s and they passed and moved the ball very well. It was encouraging to see them play so well as a team and create as many chances as they did. Very well done to all who played.

U11 ISA Football Tournament (13th October 2015) The U11s were drawn in a very hard group with Stafford Preparatory School, Grantham and Salterford House. They battled hard, but lost the first 2 games by a single goal, 0-1 and drew the last game, 0-0. Our plate play-off game was against Dixie Grammar School. After a tense game, Highclare drew 1-1 and lost the game 3-1 on penalties. Our final game was against Castle House where we ran out comfortable winners with a 2-0 win. Well done to all the players involved!

U11 Football v West House Preparatory School (6th October 2015) Highclare U11s played their first ever game at Highclare St Paul’s. After a heavy downpour of rain, the sun came out when the game started and we were treated to a high quality football game. Both teams tried to keep the ball on the deck and play passing football. It was an extremely close game and it wasn’t a surprise that after a half time score of 1-1, the final score was a 2-2 draw.

U9s ISA Football Tournament (13th October 2015) The under 9s had a very good tournament. The 1st game against Dixie resulted in a 4-2 victory. After a long wait we played 3 games in quick succession. Castle House were beaten 1-0, followed by at 2-1 win against Ruckleigh and a 2-0 win against Highfields. The last group game against Old Vicarage finished in a 1-1 draw, which meant we finished 2nd, on goal difference, in our group with 13 points. We dominated our semi-final for long spells and unfortunately lost through an own goal from one of the opponents. We finished in 3rd place, which is a great achievement for this team, playing together for the first time. Well done to all involved.

U11 Football Tournament, The Royal School, Wolverhampton (12th October 2015) Highclare’s U11 team’s first game against Chase Grammar finished in a 0-0 draw. Despite dominating their second game, they got hit on the counter attack twice and lost 1-2 to Twycross School. Our third game was against West House, who we had played in a friendly at Highclare St Paul’s the week before and drawn 2-2. They proved to be too strong this time and the game finished 0-2. Our last group game was against Tettenhall. Highclare played really well and deserved their 2-0 win. They progressed to the plate group where Highclare beat Holy Trinity 3-1 to play the hosts in the plate final. Unfortunately tiredness started to set in after a long afternoon of football and the Royal School beat us 3-1.

ISA U10 Football, Dixie Grammar School (28th September 2015) The pupils travelled to Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth for their first U10 ISA tournament of the year. They started off well against Edenhurst but couldn’t find a breakthrough and the game ended in a 0-0 draw. In the following game against Chase, Highclare continued in the same way and scored 2 great goals to win the game 2-0. The 3rd game was against a strong Old Vicarage side. The team scored 2 goals, only for a cruel deflection to condemn them to a 2-3 defeat. They lost the following 2 games against St Joseph’s and Salterford, 0-4 and 1-2, before defeating Burton with a 7-0 victory. Our last game was a 7th/8th place play-off against the hosts, which Highclare won 1-0. This was a great experience for the children at a well-run and organised tournament.

U11 & U10 Football, Hallfield School (23rd September 2015) Highclare Woodfield and Highclare St. Paul’s football teams visited Hallfield School in Edgbaston to play two friendly football fixtures, one Under 11 and one Under 10. Both matches were 7 a side games and closely contested. The Under 10s drew 3-3 in a thrilling match and the Under 11s narrowly lost 3-2.

U11 & U10 Football, Foremarke Hall (6th September 2015) Highclare started the new term with a visit to Foremarke Hall in Derbyshire to play in three 7 a side football matches. We took two Under 10 teams and one Under 11. Highclare proudly wore their new football kits and matched their new, attractive and shiny attire with a similar looking display of football. The under 10 teams won their matches 5-2 and 4-0 and the Under 11s narrowly lost out 2-1.

Infants Reception enjoy a visit from the dentist Mrs Dubb came to visit the Reception class at Highclare St Paul’s during their topic, “Ourselves”. Mrs Dubb is a dentist and she told the children all about their teeth and how to look after them properly. Mrs Dubb also gave the children an egg timer to take home which they can use to help them make sure that they brush their teeth for the right length of time.

Gingerbread Men

J1 visit Weston Park

Reception at Highclare Woodfield have been enjoying lots of activities about ‘The Gingerbread Man’.

Pupils in J1 from both sites travelled to Weston Park in Shropshire. This was a fitting end to their topic about toys from the past.

The children dressed up and had the opportunity to play with lots of toys from the past, which, in some cases, seemed very different from the electronic toys of today.

They listened to the story and then baked their own gingerbread men and women and iced them. They tasted lovely, too!

Studying Light in J1 J1 have been learning about light and shadow as part of their science topic. The children also looked at the same subject in RE, where they were studying light as a common theme throughout different celebrations; christening, birthdays, Christmas and Diwali, which linked to the Hindu Ceremony of Light itself. They looked at Candle light as a source of warmth, relaxation, celebration and as something to follow in the darkness.

J2 History Topic What a fantastic finale to the J2P history topic on Florence Nightingale. Our School Nurse visited the class to talk about modern day nursing. The children were able to see firsthand how stethoscopes are used and they also watched ‘Florence Nightingale’ have her blood pressure taken.

At Highclare Woodfield, a parent of one of the children in J2R came to talk about Nursing.

She is an Advance Nurse Practitioner and she told the children about the things she does in her job. The children were fascinated to look into her bag which contained a stethoscope, a tongue depressor and a digital thermometer.

J2 Pizza Experience Children in J2 enjoyed a great experience when they visited Pizza Express. They put on chefs hats and aprons before rolling their sleeves up to stretch the pizza dough. Exemplary behaviour as usual, well done.

Pre-School A Hut for Handa

A Walk in the Park

As part of their ‘Understanding of the World’ area of learning, Pre-School 1 children were introduced to Handa, a character created by the author and illustrator, Eileen Browne.

Pre-School 2 went to the park to collect material for their science lessons and did some science experiments outside. The children also made models and dressed-up during Book Week.

After studying ‘A Surprise for Handa’, the children helped to create a hut just like Handa’s. The children were encouraged to use PVA glue to collage a 2-dimensional house so they could practise handling and manipulating the fresh hygienic hay, which smelt ‘sweet’ and ‘like fresh air’, as noted by a small group of children. Later in the week the children were able to work in the outdoor classroom, where they helped their teacher create a 3-dimensional hut from recycled materials. This wonderful, life size creation was used in role play activities which everyone enjoyed. Unfortunately, due to changes in the British weather, the hut only lasted 5 days but was a very enjoyable activity in our fabulous outdoor environment.

Pre-School 1 have had so much fun: learning about the world around them, making biscuits for Halloween and preparing for the Nativity, to name just a few of the activities.

The children also made models and dressed-up during Book Week.

Senior Sports Results - Sept to Dec 2015 NETBAL Sutton Senior Schools League (Oct 2015) • Key Stage 4 League (6 teams) After 3 weeks of league, our combined Year 10 – 13 team played 13 matches, with 5 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses.

Team: Lucy Pearson, Olivia Platt, Phoebe Johnson, Ellis Toyne, Grace Stirland, Verity O’ Shea, Megan Ealing, Gabrielle Clarke.

• Key Stage 3 League (9 teams) After 2 weeks of league, our combined Year 8 and 9 team played 10 matches, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses.

HOCKEY U15 Sutton Schools Hockey League (Wyndley, Oct 2015) Girls Results After 5 weeks and a total of 12 matches, our combined Year 9 and 10 girls team finished 3rd in a very closely fought league this year. We were only 1 point behind the winners and although we were tied on points in second place, we had a lower goal difference.

Thanks to the Year 11 umpires who volunteered their time to umpire every week.

ISA U16 Tournament (St Dominic’s, Sept 2015) The U16 netball squad played some impressive netball at the regional tournament on superb, newly laid courts. The combined Year 9, 10 and 11 team showed great teamwork, determination and came away with some pleasing results.

The team then progressed on the 7th/8th playoff where they beat Our Lady’s Convent 7 - 2, finishing in 7th place overall out of 10 schools.

U14 ISA Football Tournament at Dixie Grammar A great day of football at the superb facilities of Dixie Grammar School, the pitches were immaculate, complimented by great weather as we competed to try to regain our title as champions. As always, the standard of football at the ISA tournament was high and all schools involved had the potential to win. The tournament was played on a league basis and each school played each other once. After 5 weeks of league games the combined Year 7 -9 team finished 6th out of 7 although the girls made massive improvements every week as a team and as individuals. A big thank you to Jamie Richards for giving up her time every week to referee the girls matches.

ISA Football Tournament at Gresham Playing Fields Highclare were unbeaten in their group stage winning 2 and drawing 1. In the semi-finals Highclare found their toughest test playing a very strong Stafford Grammar team, the match finished 1-1 and Highclare went on to win on penalties. The final match was vs Brooke House a very strong football academy, Highclare dominated the match although Brooke House took advantage of their one chance and went on to win 1-0.

U16 ISA Midlands Squad Representation A big congratulations to Thomas West and Cameron Gregory for being selected to play in the U16 ISA Midlands Representative Squad. Thomas and Cameron were scouted and chosen for the squad whilst playing for Highclare in the U16 ISA Football Tournament.

TOPS During October half term the TOPS children enjoyed creative workshops and sporting activities and a fabulous Halloween party.

Charity and Community News African Space Trust

Erdington Food Bank

Children and staff at Highclare School have chosen to raise funds for African Space Trust. This charity was founded in 2009 when a group of people visited Itete in the Ulanga District Morogoro Region, Tanzania and decided to help with the provision of medical facilities. The village school also asked for help and support in getting more text books as so many children had to share. The community knew what they wanted but needed more money to bring their plan to fruition.

Another charity that we are supporting this year is the Erdington Food Bank. Following our Harvest Festivals, pupils from all three sites delivered their donations to the Erdington Food Bank. Whilst there, they had a tour and a talk about the importance of the Food Bank and how it is set up.

Thank you to all the parents and family friends who donated items to our Harvest Festival assemblies. Highclare School junior and senior choirs entertained people shopping in Sutton Coldfield. They filled the Gracechurch Shopping Centre with the sound of Christmas carols and festive songs.

African Space Trust started to raise funds in various ways and then sent the money across to the village for them to manage the project themselves.The charity is still raising funds to build accommodation for doctors and medical professionals. Book stocks at the school have increased and medical supplies have been purchased as well.

Both choirs sang a large repertoire of songs from traditional carols to jazz arrangements while raising funds for the African Space Trust. Well done to the pupils and thank you to all of thepeople who donated to this good cause.

They continue to support the village as best they can.

We look forward to a large variety of fundraising events over the academic year which will involve children and staff from all three Highclare Schools.

Cheque Presentation to SSAFA Pupils and staff were delighted to present SSAFA, the school’s chosen charity for 2014 – 2015, with a cheque for £9,081. This followed a variety of fundraising events over the academic year which involved children of every year group. Thank you to all of the children, teachers, helpers and parents who helped make this fundraising year so successful. Highclare St Paul’s and Highclare Woodfield enjoyed special assemblies given by a representative of SSAFA to introduce the charity to the children.

Highclare Senior School started the ball rolling with a Halloween themed cake sale organised by the Sixth Form, which was greatly appreciated by staff and students!
