24 Hours of Music On The Purcell School’s First Giving Day Outstanding Student Success | The Purcell School Inaugural Giving Day | and much more . . .

CHRIS HARBOUR Director of Development Welcome to the final newsletter of the year, and what a year it has been! This edition contains highlights of events and concerts as well as key achievements by our students and alumni. Each year I am blown away but the sheer amount of activity that is undertaken and this year is no exception. On the following pages, you will read about countless student achievements, external concerts around the country and alumni recitals and appointments. We are excited to share the results of our very first Giving Day, featuring a 24-hour continuous live streamed concert. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for our students in this challenge and I’m delighted to share the final total of funds raised towards the Bursary Fund on page 19. We are delighted to celebrate an unprecedented achievement of Purcell School students at the prestigious BBC Young Composer Competition. Read more about our young musicians winning every age category on page 23. Next year, we will be bidding farewell to Alison Cox, Head of Composition, after an incredible 38 years of service to the School. In true Alison style, we will be celebrating this achievement with a series of special events before her retirement at the end of the academic year. Please see page 21 for a request to all composition alumni to get involved. The School is now closed for the Christmas break and we wish our whole Purcell community a happy festive season. We have not one, but two London dates in the New Year for your diaries: Cadogan Hall, 9th February at 7.30pm and Wigmore Hall, 12th March at 1pm. We hope you can join us there, or at any of our other internal or external concerts next year. In the meantime, season’s greetings and wishing you a wonderful 2026!

FROM CLASSROOM IDEA TO STUDIO RELEASE – NATTY PURBRICK’S JAZZ COLLABORATION We’re delighted to share the latest musical release, entitled BIRD SONG, from recent alumnus Natty Purbrick, whose new jazz fusion video brings together an inspiring mix of current and former Purcell students. “It’s here! The big jazz fusion collaboration is now fully released,” says Natty. “It’s been a long time coming, so I hope you enjoy it and share it with everyone imaginable – in school and out!” The track has a special connection to Purcell. Natty wrote the tune on his very first day at the School, during a creative ‘getting-to-know-each-other’ task set by Paul Hoskins, Director of Music. Two years later, that spark of inspiration evolved into a full studio recording – a testament to the collaborative spirit that thrives among Purcell musicians. The video features a line-up of talented alumni and current Purcellians – Sam, Clem, Albi, Ramona, Albert, Marcus, Otto, Lucas, Alex and Keir – who together deliver an energetic and beautifully layered performance that perfectly captures the essence of jazz fusion. You can watch Natty’s video on YouTube here.

emotional, tears falling as she played, in a moment that resonated powerfully with audiences worldwide. Although she was not among the top prize-winners – with first place awarded to Eric Lu (USA), second to Kevin Chen (Canada) and third to Zitong Wang (China) – her heartfelt playing left a lasting impression.

Support the Future of Music 24 HOURS. ONE PURPOSE. A FUTURE OF MUSIC.

We were delighted to hold The Purcell School’s inaugural Giving Day — a 24hour celebration of community, music and giving. Taking place on 11–12 December 2025, this special event invited our entire school community — students, staff, parents, alumni and supporters — to come together in support of The Purcell School Bursary Fund.

At the heart of the Giving Day was a 24hour concert with performances by students from all year groups. Musicians from all departments, from Strings to Jazz, performed classical, commercial, chamber music and everything in between, continuously for 24 hours. The concert was livestreamed, allowing supporters near and far to join us throughout the day and night. The Giving Day began on a truly memorable note. At the opening of the livestream, Principal Paul Bambrough announced that we had received a letter from HM King Charles III, our Royal Patron. In his message, His Majesty wrote that he was “truly touched to be reminded of the dedicated work that you do to celebrate and encourage the musical abilities of young people,” and added, “I send my warmest good wishes to all those who are present for a most memorable event.” Sharing this message filled the School with excitement and pride, setting an inspiring tone for the 24 hours that followed.

The Purcell School - 29 April, 2026 As part of our year-long celebrations, we are delighted to announce a special concert dedicated to Alison’s remarkable legacy. This unique event will feature new works by Purcell School student composers — from Middle School through to Sixth Form — each inspired by the musical letters found in Alison’s name: A, S (E in European notation), and C.

Guided by our Composition Department, the students have explored creative ways to transform these notes into original, three-minute pieces, each growing from this shared musical ‘seed’. The performances will be brought to life by Purcell School staff, performing in small chamber groups drawn from an ensemble of oboe, horn, violin, cello, and piano. We are thrilled to invite our alumni to join us in the audience for what promises to be an inspiring evening of creativity and celebration, honouring Alison’s extraordinary influence on generations of young composers. ‘‘Sumer is i-cumen in’ The Purcell School - Wednesday July 9th 2026. CP Hall Alumni are invited to participate in creating variations of the 800 year old song, ‘Sumer is i-cumin in’. Current students will participate as performers in one of the following groups: The Purcell School’s Chamber Choir, The Philomel Orchestra, solo pianists, instrumentalists and singers, chamber groups, jazz and commercial groups and members of the school’s IMPULSE Outreach group! Please get in touch with Alison (a.cox@purcell-school.org) if you are interested in taking part and would like further details.

NEW BOOK ON STEVE REICH TO BE EDITED BY PURCELL’S RYAN HEPBURN AND FEATURE PURCELL PERCUSSIONIST Ryan Hepburn, Purcell’s classical percussion teacher, has been offered a contract by Cambridge University Press to edit a major new book on American composer Steve Reich, widely regarded as the most important living composer. The collection will celebrate Reich’s legacy and influence, featuring essays and reflections on his music, with Ryan contributing chapters on Reich’s Jewish identity and socially engaged works. The book will include contributions from leading performers, composers and scholars, including Russell Hartenberger, Brad Lubman, Micaela Haslam, Nico Muhly and Timo Andres. Furthermore, one of The Purcell School’s student percussionists will contribute a short, reflective essay to the book. Having worked on an essay competition piece with Ryan for the RPS Competition Award, Hannah (Year 12) will have her beautifully crafted piece about her experience of rehearsing and performing Reich’s Mallet Quartet at Purcell featured in the book, alongside others by authors including composers David Lang, Michael Gordon and video artist Beryl Korot. The book is scheduled for publication in 2028, with further details to be announced by Cambridge University Press.

THE PURCELL SCHOOL CELEBRATES SUCCESS IN EVERY CATEGORY AT BBC YOUNG COMPOSER COMPETITION 2025 We are delighted to celebrate an unprecedented achievement as Purcell School students are winners in all age categories at the prestigious BBC Young Composer Competition. In a triumphant display of creativity, originality and musicianship, Gerard (Year 13) has been named winner of the Senior category, Nemunis (Year 12) winner of the Upper Junior category, and Luca (Year 10) winner of the Lower Junior category. In addition, Tim (Year 13) has been highly commended, further highlighting the depth and brilliance of compositional talent at the School. This year’s competition was judged by a distinguished panel of adjudicators - Segun Akinola, Belle Chen, Lloyd Coleman, Tansy Davies, Hannah Donat, Shiva Feshareki, Gavin Higgins and George Moore - whose expertise spans an extraordinary range of contemporary and classical practice. Each category winner will now embark on a bespoke development programme, working closely with a mentor composer on a project with the BBC Concert Orchestra, culminating in an exciting performance or broadcast opportunity. This year’s extraordinary success carries special significance for The Purcell School. Head of Composition Alison Cox, who retires at the end of this academic year after 38 years of exceptional service, helped Peter Kingston of The Guardian establish the original BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year Competition in 1998. She also served as Musical Director of Endymion, the ensemble that performed the winning works for several years. Her vision and lifelong commitment to nurturing young composers have shaped generations of musicians, and the School is immensely proud to see her legacy reflected so strongly in this year’s results. Alison reflected not only on the students’ achievement but on the competition more broadly: “I am delighted by the success of our students, but would also like to warmly acknowledge our amazing composition teachers at The Purcell School, who support and encourage all our young emerging composers; not just the winners.” The Purcell School community joins together in celebrating this historic moment, underscoring the School’s longstanding commitment to nurturing the UK’s most promising young musical voices.
