The energy of September invites us to be healthy, exercise, enjoy the harvest and eat well. We are asked to pay close attention to our physical bodies. How often have you heard someone say Ò I need to lose weight or stop smoking?Ó How many times have we started to take action only to lose interest. Ò ItÕ s too hardÓ , Ò I have no will powerÓ , Ò I just canÕ t do it!Ó WeÕ ve all heard the excuses and even made some ourselves. This month isnÕ t about losing weight or not smoking; itÕ s about loving ourselves enough to finding what will work to make us healthy. Listening to our bodies is a good place to start. Talk to yourself before you put that donut into your body. Ask, Ò is this really healthy for meÓ ? Chances are youÕ ll hear a big Ò NOÓ ! By truly listening, we will eventually eat what is good for usÉa nd maybe even lose weight. I truly believe that we eat unhealthy foods out of boredom. Next, recall some of the activities you did for fun. Perhaps going for a bike ride, walking on a beach, flying a kite, hiking, playing racket ball or tennis, swimming. Remember, exercise does not mean just going to a gym. The third step: be kind and gentle with yourself. DonÕ t go on a guilt trip. Don’t feel the need to justify you’re missing flying that kite. There are more fun activities you can create. ItÕ s important to create a space and time that makes you feel good about who you are. Make it your space, your time just to be with you. Finally, volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Work for a charity, deliver meals on wheels. There are so many organizations that need help.

Debbie Veach

Life enchanted An interview with Debbie Veach, the Founder of The Enchanted Forest, a Reiki Master, and a wife and mother.

I

grew up in a very close family; the middle child of 7. When I was 8 years old, my parents met a psychic healer. They were very intrigued by her and studied under her for many years, passing on what they’d learned to their children. I didn’t focus on them a lot as an adult, as I found myself too busy raising my own children, working full time and so forth. About six years ago I developed serious health issues, which compounded more and more as I struggled with the western world of medicine, which never had an answer as to “why” I was so sick and just handed me more and more pharmaceutical drugs. After four years into a debilitating illness I’d had enough and decided to seek out an alternative healer. I found an incredible healer, whom brought me back to life. She changed my diet, added herbs, and did energy healing. It took a few months of seeing her, but the reality was, through 100% natural means, she’d healed me and brought me new life, new purpose and a passion to bring energy healing back into my life. I soon became a certified Reiki Master opening my one room office approximately a year later, the Enchanted Forest reiki Center. My goal and passion, teach others to see that we are healers, we are all one, we are all beautiful and have the power to make a difference for ourselves and each other. ILT: Debbie, I know you have grown from a small one-room office into several rooms on two floors of the complex you are in within two years. What is your vision for ‘yourself’ over the next year? DV: It’s my vision to have a large event room in the coming year, and more global presence by bringing in healers and teachers from around the world. ILT: I understand you have three children. What is your home life like and do you have a sanctuary? DV: I actually have seven children and one grandchild when you include my stepchildren. I’m very close to my family. We do everything together, whether it’s watching TV, going for walks, playing board games or going to movies. I couldn’t imagine my life without them. They are everything to me. My sanctuary is my heart. I’ve learned that if you rely on physically having to go somewhere to be in a sanctuary you will convince yourself you cannot have peace until you go there. ILT: Debbie, have you had an “AH-Ha” event/experience that was enlightening and inspirational which had a major impact on your outlook and expectations of life? Would you share it with our readers? DV: That would have to be when I received a very loud and clear message from spirit to expand my little one room space and move into a 2 room commercial space. I’d barely started covering my rent, so it didn’t make any sense to me for spirit to say I needed to move and grow. It felt completely illogical. My husband, whom is a shaman, then challenged me and said to me: “Debbie if you are not going to listen to spirit when they give you a direct message how can you teach other’s to listen to spirit? If that’s the case then not only should you not move, you should simply shut your doors”.

It was an AHA moment indeed. In that time I knew he was right. My life has never been the same since. ILT: Debbie, I must say that I had chills upon reading your last answer. Thank you for sharing that. ILT: What is the most exciting adventure you have been on. DV: When I went to patagonia Argentina and hiked over beautiful glaciers. The way the sun shone over the ice, creating colors so magnificent, and waterfalls over the glaciers that were so beautiful, I was in complete awe of Mother Nature. ILT: You are such a vivacious and bubbly lady with an enormous energy radiating through you. Please share how you enjoy your life away from your business; your favorite pastime, sport, hobby? We would love to know. DV: I love to go on walks with my family. It might sound boring to a lot of people but it fills me in ways I cannot explain, especially if we are walking where there is grass and trees. Walks for our household are a family event, it’s quality time at it’s best; much better than any TV show. I also love to play the game “boggle”. It’s a word game that challenges me, that is quick and fun and get’s everyone going. ILT: I love restaurants and good food, so I always need to ask, what are your two favorite restaurants and your most favorite dish in each, and of course, why? DV: I love a good soup, there is something incredibly comforting and wonderful about a good soup. The minestrone soup at Carraba’s is one of my all time favorites. The other would have to be lobster at Hugo’s. That’s where my husband and I ate when we got married, and we go back every year for our anniversary. It’s a special place in my heart because of that. ILT: Debbie, your faith and determination are inspiring. If you could give a gift of inspiration and words to our readers, what would they be? DV: Your body and mind are your best compass, trust them implicitly. If something feels wrong don’t do it, and if it feels right do it without question, without looking back or over thinking it. Obtaining a goal is not about logic; it’s about becoming the reality you seek. ILT: Debbie, thank you so much for sharing your inspirations, who you are and where you are going. You have truly inspired all of us.

CRYSTALS & GEMSTONES The Sapphire is known as a “stone of prosperity”, and “the wisdom stone”, sustaining the gift of life, eliminating frustration and fulfilling the dreams and desires of the consciousness. This gem has often been used during the healing modality of the “laying on of stones”.

SEPTEMBER Gemstone

The sapphire is one of the three gem-varieties of corundum, the other two being ruby – defined as corundum in a shade of red—and padparadscha—a pinkish orange variety. Although blue is their most well-known color, sapphires may also be colorless and are found in many colors including shades of gray and black. The cost of natural sapphires varies depending on their color, clarity, size, cut, and overall quality – as well as their geographic origin. Significant sapphire deposits are found in Eastern Australia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China (Shandong), Madagascar, East Africa, and in North America in a few locations, mostly in Montana. Sapphires and rubies are often found in the same geographic environment, but one of the gems is usually more abundant in any of the sites. Color in gemstones breaks down into three components: hue, saturation, and tone. Hue is most commonly understood as the “color” of the gemstone. Saturation refers to the vividness or brightness of the hue, and tone is the lightness to darkness of the hue. Blue sapphire exists in various mixtures of its primary (blue) and secondary hues, various tonal levels (shades) and at various levels of saturation (vividness). Blue sapphires are evaluated based upon the purity of their primary hue. Purple, violet, and green are the most common secondary hues found in blue sapphires. Violet and purple can contribute to the overall beauty of the color, while green is considered to be distinctly negative. Blue sapphires, with up to 15% violet or

purple, are generally said to be of fine quality. Blue sapphires with any amount of green as a secondary hue are not considered to be fine quality. Gray is the normal saturation modifier or mask found in blue sapphires. Gray reduces the saturation or brightness of the hue and therefore, has a distinctly negative effect. The color of fine blue sapphires may be described as a vivid medium dark violet to purplish blue where the primary blue hue is at least 85% and the secondary hue no more than 15%, without the least admixture of a green secondary hue or a gray mask. The 423-carat (85 g) Logan Sapphire in, the National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C., is one of the largest faceted gem-quality blue sapphires in existence. This wonderful mineral can be used to rid one of unwanted thoughts and to bring joy and peace of mind by opening your mind to beauty and intuition. The Sapphire brings lightness and joy, with the depth of beauty and thought, to the user/wearer. The Sapphire is known as a “stone of prosperity”, and “the wisdom stone”, sustaining the gift of life, eliminating frustration and fulfilling the dreams and desires of the consciousness. This gem has often been used during the healing modality of the “laying on of stones”. Sapphire calms overactive body systems and regulates the glands. It heals the eyes, removing impurities and stress. It treats blood disorders and alleviates excessive bleeding, strengthens veins, and improves their elasticity. Finally, the various colors of Sapphire add even more attributes to those already mentioned!

friend Jenny owns a Subway sandwich shop in a large city. When local teenagers began to loiter near the entrance to the shop, Jenny politely asked them to leave. When they continued to show up, Jenny contemplated how to clear the walkway for patrons. Finally she set up some speakers at the doorway and played classical music at the shop’s entrance. Within minutes the teens scattered as if a stink bomb had been dropped in their midst. Every interaction is based on the Law of Attraction, symbolized by Velcro tape. Velcro works when two sets of fibrous hooks catch onto each other and bind together. When one set of hooks becomes old and worn, they become flaccid and straighten out until they no longer catch and hold. End of match, end of sticking together. The flip side of the Law of Attraction is the Law of repulsion. Actually there is no repulsion; either things match and stay stuck together or they do not. repulsion is more accurately an absence of attraction. The teenagers at the sandwich shop were attuned to one frequency, while the classical music represented another frequency. There was no match, so the teenagers decided to go elsewhere to a place that matched their frequency. You don’t have to get rid of people you don’t like or harmonize with. Simply strike a clear, strong keynote of the frequency you value. If the other person can match that frequency, he may shift to meet you at the frequency you broadcast. If he cannot match the frequency, he will go away. You don’t have to struggle or manipulate to make him go away. You just have to stand firmly in your desired reality.

no reward for his lecture or his jokes. It didn’t take long before the professor was lecturing exclusively from the left side of the classroom. she had been married to a man who was emotionally abusive. “I told my husband I wanted a divorce, but he refused to give it to me,” she recounted. “So I decided that even if he didn’t love me, I would love me. I would give myself the kindness and caring I had been seeking from him. So I wrote myself a love letter telling myself how beautiful, valuable, and desirable I am. When I read the letter I felt so attractive and affirmed that I wrote another one as if from a man who was deeply in love with me. I continued to write myself passionate love letters every day for a few weeks. “Then one day my husband found one of these letters. Since it was unsigned, he assumed it was from another man. He came to me waving the letter in his hand and told me, ‘I can’t compete with this—you can have your divorce!’” In order for Georgia to stay in a situation that dishonored her, she had to dishonor herself. part of her believed that she deserved emotional abuse or that a better situation was not available. So her husband and marriage mirrored that belief. When Georgia realized, “This can’t be it” and she began to give herself the love she was missing, her frequency changed. She was now broadcasting on the wavelength of a loving relationship, no longer a match to the lifeless frequency to which her husband had been tuned. At that point he had no choice but to meet her at the new frequency or leave. In this case he chose to leave. In other cases a partner might shift.

Don’t put a name or face on your ideal partner. He might be your current partner, or someone else. The more you dwell in your ideal scenario, regardless of the other person’s behavior, the more power you have to manifest your ideal situation.” rewarding desired behavior will get you much farther than punishing undesirable behavior. In a college behavioral psychology class, the professor had a habit of pacing back and forth in front of the classroom while he lectured. So the students tried an experiment on him. Whenever the professor lectured from the left side of the room, the students paid attention to him, took notes, asked questions, and laughed at his jokes. When the teacher stood at the right side of the room, they paid no attention and gave him

As we enter the new school and business season, the universe will reward you for being who you are—but you must be who you are before the universe can reward you. Establish yourself in the energy you value, and you will get more of it. Like the Subway loiterers who headed for the hills, anything not a match to you will leave of its own accord. Then you will be left only with people and situations who are playing and listening to the music you prefer. Are YOu AN emOTIONAl GuSHer?

I

n

my practice as a psychiatrist and personally, I’ve known many people who I called “the emotional gusher.” Gushers are experts at knowing their emotions and were born to share them. No one has to wonder where they’re at. Elated, bored, miserable, they tell you. What you see is what you get. They tend to be spontaneous, direct, real people-persons, trusted confidants. The gusher unloads stress by verbalizing it. I, for one, know how freeing this can be. I am grateful for my treasured circle of friends who deserve trophies for listening to my fears, hopes, and quandaries over the years. However, some gushers get antsy when there’s no one to tell. Also, they may resist making independent decisions, trusting their intuition, or staying emotionally grounded without external input. I have a patient who’s an aide in a convalescent home, a true friend to the elderly. Though he finds helping others gratifying, the setting can be arduous: understaffing and budget cuts compromise the care he gives to the demented or physically disabled, a brutal neglect he had difficulty stomaching. Each night, he depended on being able to vent his stress to his wife, but could work himself into tremendous anxiety if she wasn’t around. My patient didn’t know how else to calm down and release stress until I taught him the techniques that follows. In addition to healthily venting, he learned to tap the power within to find inner peace. In my book “Emotional Freedom” I describe the gusher as well as three other common emotional types which include, The Intellectual, The Empath, and the rock. It’s

important to know which type you are to be empowered emotionally. To determine if you’re a gusher, take the following quiz. QUIZ: AM I A GUSHER? Ask yourself: • Is it easy to express my emotions? • Do I get anxious if I keep my feelings in? • When a problem arises, is my first impulse to pick up the phone? •

Do I need to take a poll before finalizing a decision? • Are my friends often telling me “too much information?” •

Do I have difficulty sensing other people’s emotional boundaries? If you answer “yes” to 1-3 of these questions, you possess some gusher tendencies. responding “yes” to more than 3 suggests this is your emotional type. recognizing you’re a gusher enables you to become a better communicator by learning to balance self-sufficiency with emotional expression. Sometimes gushers are so hungry to share that they turn people off. At a party, in the market, they’re all over you, compulsive emotional purgers. (The joke goes that such motor mouths qualify for the Twelve-Step program On-andon-and-on-and-on!) Although it’s liberating to voice feelings, a gusher must strike a balance between healthily emoting and drawing on the wisdom within. Consider the following profile summarizing a gusher’s traits. THE GUSHER’S UPSIdE • You’re emotionally articulate.

• Negativity doesn’t fester in you if you express it to others. • You have a supportive network of friends. • You value intimate relationships, are a sensitive listener. • You deal with hard issues and process them quickly. THE GUSHER’S downSIdE • You’re a candidate for becoming a drama king or queen. • You may turn friends into therapists. • You seek external feedback before you consult your intuition for answers. • Your need to share excessively may burn other people out. • You haven’t fully embraced your own inner power or spiritual strengths. Emotional Action Step. Tips For Gushers They Can Find Balance Empower yourself with self-sufficiency. Experiment with centering your feelings before soliciting support. Here’s how: First define the upset. Let’s say your boss has made mince meat out of your self-worth yet again. Second, ask yourself, “How does this make me feel? Seething? Demoralized? Plotting

murder?” Excellent: Let yourself experience those emotions uncut, not acting them out, an essential stage before transformation can happen. Third, work with your feelings using these techniques: Tip #1 Set your intention to clear the emotion. Tip #2 Keep exhaling stress and relax your body. Ti p # 3 U s e p o s i t i v e s e l f - t a l k t o love yourself back to center again. Inwardly say, “I did my best. I even deserve points for graciousness.” Affirm everything you did right; try to forgive where you might’ve fallen short, a loving inner dialogue that reinstates your power. Tip #4 Tune into intuition to find a solution. Spend a few quiet moments meditating to see what images, impressions, or ah-has! come to you about improving the situation. As a gusher, if you skip these steps and go straight to the phone, you’ll cheat yourself out of the opportunity to build the emotional muscles necessary for more freedom and autonomy. Knowledge is power. The most important relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself. If this is good, you’ll be capable of gratifying relationships with others.

All twelve of us wrote furiously for …

O

ne

of my most memorable moments as a doctoral student in the 1960s occurred during a seminar in an advanced course on counseling psychology, taught by the most prestigious professor at the university. I, along with 11 others, studied the research and conclusions on self-actualization, including the specific characteristics of highly functioning people. These exceptional people, some of them historical figures, were called self-actualizers. The purpose of this advanced seminar was to teach us how to identify these traits and to help others embrace them to live fuller and more deeply passionate lives. The traits of these self-actualizers included appreciation for beauty, sense of purpose, resistance to enculturation, welcoming the unknown, high enthusiasm, inner-directedness, detachment from outcome, independence of the good opinion of others, and absence of a compelling need to exert control over others. Each

week we discussed the strategies we could employ as therapists to encourage clients to become self-actualized. At the halfway point of the semester, our distinguished professor gave the midterm examination, which consisted of only the following question: “A self-actualized person arrives at a dinner party at which everyone is dressed in formal attire. He is wearing blue jeans, a T-shirt, sneakers, and a baseball cap. What does he do? You have thirty minutes to write your answer.” All twelve of us wrote furiously for the next half-hour, and then we were each asked to read our responses aloud. Some of the responses I remember were: He wouldn’t pay attention to those appearances; he wouldn’t leave or make excuses; he would just act as if nothing were amiss; he would just go on and enjoy the gathering and not worry about how others perceived him. I remember feeling particularly proud of my answer, which dealt with his feeling of purpose and a higher mission. When all of us had finished reading our answers, our profession said, “I’m sorry, you have all failed the midterm exam. You only needed to write three words”. And he proceeded to put the three words on the chalkboard. “He wouldn’t notice.” The highest level of awareness is one in which the self-actualized person does not notice appearances and sees only the unfolding of God in each person encountered.

I Can See Clearly now

“I can see clearly now, the rain has gone, I can see all obstacles in my way.”

I

can see clearly now, the rain is gone, I can see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day.” I always enjoyed this song by Johnny Nash. Although I will admit for several years I thought the lyrics were “I can see all icicles in my way,” which didn’t make sense. but when I learned the true lyrics, what had begun as a pleasant song, became a meaningful one. I thought of that song after my recent cataract surgery. people told me things would look clearer, more vibrant. I was neutral in my responses. “I can still see,” I thought. “Will the surgery really make that much of a difference?” I had forgotten how, like life, seeing even a little bit more clearly through one lens would impact everything. The eye is still healing, so I don’t yet know the full impact of the surgery. I do know that already colors are more vibrant, and I can see details that I didn’t know where there before. I’m regaling the people around me with my new “insights,” rather like we do when we have new emotional, intellectual, or spiritual insights. I’m a little giddy as I see things that, until now, had been blurred or shadowy. Thus I now see that my freckles didn’t fade, nor has the ink from my printer faded. That’s the good news. More challenging is I see that my skin isn’t as smooth and blemish free as I thought. And, as with life, when we become more aware or awakened, we can see both how beautiful life can be and where there are “dark clouds.”

Does any of this resonate with you? Are there areas of your life (physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual) where you might want to part the clouds and shake off the bad feelings? Life is interesting. We often become so accustomed to the rain and overcast, we forget that above them are blue skies of a higher spiritual vibration, more loving relationships, joy, vibrant health, and financial prosperity. We need to “see clearly” through introspection, guidance from others, or paying attention to life events. We need to love and accept whatever we uncover (a good sense of humor helps). And then, if we want to experience “blue skies,” we need to take action to bring forth our true, authentic self.

Has that ever happened to you? You become more aware of beliefs and habits in your life that are not as palatable as you would like. Yet, when you shine a conscious light on them, you give yourself breathing room to claim your authentic self because you no longer have to keep up a façade. You open the way to experiencing more joy, prosperity, love, and good health in your life. For my eyes, I went to my ophthalmologist, Dr. Hsu. That was easy. Every year I would go for a checkup. Dr. Hsu would tell me how the cataracts were progressing and asked how I was doing. Since I didn’t know any better, I said I was doing fine. Then last December Dr. Hsu asked me when I wanted to have the cataract surgery. That caught my attention. I thought about it, and decided to act. I was “doing fine.” We often think that way until someone else tells us there is something going on that we should look at. I remember a boss pointing out a habit of mine that wasn’t especially professional looking. I had no idea. “I don’t do that, do I?” I said to myself. Then I started to observe, and yes, I did. Not only wasn’t it all that professional, it was an indication of me giving away my power and not being authentic. It wasn’t a pleasant realization. Yet, once I became aware of that habit, I saw more clearly other areas where I was not being an authentic and powerful professional woman. Yes, it smarted at first. Yet this new awareness allowed me to claim some of the truth of who I truly am. Verse two of Johnny Nash’s song states, “I think I can make it now, the pain is gone. All of the bad feelings have disappeared. Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin’ for. It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day.” Yes, sometimes there is pain in the new awareness—like seeing blemishes or bad habits for the first time. However, when we address them, the “bad” does disappear, replaced by a rainbow of possibilities. Or, as Nash’s lyrics continue, “Look all around, there’s nothin’ but blue skies. Look straight ahead, nothin’ but blue skies.” IN LIGHT TIMES • SEpTEMbEr, 2013 • pAGE 11

The Importance of Potassium With Older Felines

By Michael D. Rosenthal

Further Considerations Fortunately, the discovery of the above two conditions (relative to potassium levels) has provided us with the knowledge of interrupting these vicious cycles by virtue of dietary potassium supplementation. Not only does this supplementation prolong the longevity of kidney function, it supports those functions as well. Additionally, felines will act, eat, and

feel better in the long run.

s your cat ages, they will encounter numerous changes over time that will eventually lead to a failure of their organs and internal systems – this is a fact of life. However, it is possible to prolong their longevity by paying attention to the special needs that of older felines and by providing your cat with those elements that they will benefit from as they grow older.

Recent studies have proven that imbalances in feline potassium levels are directly related to certain health conditions and issues that older cats are prone to. Fortunately, the condition is treatable, and cats are not only healthier now, but they have longer life expectancies today than ever before. So let’s take a look at the potassium issue from the perspective of what it is and what it does, as well as why it is so important to the life of an older cat.

What You Need to Know About Uva Ursi For Cats

By Laura Ramirez

What is Potassium and What Does It Do?

A

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s website, Potassium is defined as “a mineral that helps the kidneys function normally. It also plays a key role in cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle contraction, making it an important nutrient for normal heart, digestive, and muscular function.” Potassium is also found in felines – specifically, in their blood and within all their body cells.

Uva ursi is an herb, which is made into a tonic and used to support urinary tract and kidney health. It acts as an antiseptic and astringent and can prevent and treat urinary tract infections, especially chronic infections in older cats or cats who do not respond well to prescription medications.

Clinical studies have proven that it is an essential component for proper cell function in felines and is of utmost importance to the cells that cardiac and skeletal muscles are comprised of. With felines, just as is the case with humans, depleted potassium levels oftentimes result in severe weakening in all aspects of the muscular system.

Why is Potassium So Important to Older Felines? Clinical studies recently revealed a dual avenue of importance in the relationship of older felines and proper potassium levels. Hypokalemia, which is an insufficient level of blood potassium, has been found to be common in mild form in older felines. It is most commonly associated with inactivity, lack of exercise, and lethargic behavior in these older cats. Additionally, it is also associated with poor appetite, bad conditions or the coat and skin, and the occurrence of anemia. It was originally hypothesized that these conditions were the result of the aging process, but these clinical studies have proven this to be incorrect. It is unfortunate, however, that there is currently no test that is conclusive enough to prove the conditions are truly correlated with insufficient potassium levels since the blood potassium screenings are not a true reflection of the entire body’s potassium levels. What is certain is that the reversal of the process is effected with dietary potassium supplementation. Secondly, there is a correlation between sufficient potassium levels (or an increase of these levels) and the longevity of kidney function. In most cases, the kidneys are the first of the major organs to fail in older cats. As the cat ages, its kidneys begin to fail in the removal of toxins in there systems. As a natural reaction, the cat consumes more water to elevate the frequency of urination in order to flush these toxins from their systems. The unfortunate side effect is that increased urination depletes the cat’s potassium levels. The result is the onset of Hypokalemia (see above).

lthough you may have recently heard about using Uva Ursi for cats, it is a well-known natural medicine that has been around for centuries. It has been used in homeopathic remedies to quickly and effectively treat bladder conditions in humans and pets.

Also known as bearberry, it is found on evergreen shrubs that grow low to the ground in many places around the world. In addition to healing infections, it also reduces the pain caused by a variety of urinary conditions. The active ingredients in Uva Ursi are Arbutin, Ursolic Acid and Allantoin. The herb is a urinary tonic that works by balancing pH levels in the bladder, making it difficult for bacteria to grow and preventing the formation of kidney and bladder stones. It soothes and strengthens bladder tissues, promoting a healthy bladder and can also be used as a diuretic. Too much of a good thing can be dangerous. Since too much of this herb can cause medical problems, rather than trying to administer it yourself, buy a homeopathic remedy that has been formulated with Uva Ursi for cats and other herbs known to restore balance to the bladder. Some other herbs to look for in an effective formulation include Berberis and Cantharis. If your cat has been suffering from chronic urinary tract infections, make sure to do the research to find a remedy that is strong enough to heal, yet gentle enough to use for daily prevention if necessary.

Important Facts About Dog Foods

enowned holistic veterinarian Dr. Jane bicks claims that the maximum life span of dogs is estimated to be between 25 to 30 years, and yet the average dog usually lives no longer than 13 to 14 years. Dr. Jane claims that this difference is caused mostly from substandard nourishment. For example, canned food is about 75 to 78 percent moisture, which leaves very little room for nutrition. In addition to containing what is generally considered the bottom of the barrel ingredients in terms of nutritional density, most conventional dog food products contain especially large amounts of sodium to make them palatable, as well as dairy, by-products, chemical preservatives, artificial colors and other potentially harmful ingredients. The carbohydrate ratio is too high in some dog food brands as well, eventually leading to obesity, which is increasingly becoming a serious problem with dogs. In fact, obesity is one of the greatest health concerns facing our dogs; it can cause unnecessary suffering and a shortened lifespan. renowned research scientist Dr. barry Sears believes that dog food should have about the same 30-30-40 ratio as the human Zone diet. This means a relatively small amount of carbohydrates. Not only do many dog food brands have a particularly large amount of carbohydrates, they are mostly grain based, which are exactly the ones the Zone diet tries to minimize. Another problem, according to the USDA Agricultural service, is that mites often get into dog food pellets, which can cause a number of problems such as various diseases. They recommend keeping dog food cool and dry, and vacuuming in the places where the food is stored at least once a week. In addition keep the area around the dish where the dog food is served clean. Also, do not leave any dog food in your pet’s bowl on warm, humid days. It should be noted that harder working dogs require more protein and fat in their diet

to maintain stamina and good body form. A dog food that is complete and balanced and includes at least 26 percent protein and 1650 kilocalories of energy that can be metabolized per pound is ideal. During the seasons when dogs are not working, their energy requirements decrease. Feed less of the high calorie food or change to a less nutrient-dense dog food. Dr. Jane bicks has been honored on many occasions by the veterinary profession and is the author of several books including ‘Thirty days to a healthier, happier dog” and “Dr. Jane’s Natural guide to a healthier, happier dog”. She has been involved in many advisory boards including Canine Companions for independence and has served as the president of the Veterinary Medical association of New York City.

Survivors of the Titanic included two dogs: a Pekingese belonging to Henry Sleeper Harper and a Pomeranian belonging to Miss Margaret Hays. The oldest breed of dog native to North America is the Chihuahua. An American Animal Hospital Association poll showed that 33 percent of dog owners admit that they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages on an answering machine while away. At the end of the Beatles’ song “A Day in the Life”, an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, was recorded by Paul McCartney for his Shetland sheepdog. Cats have more than one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten. Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not sweat by salivating. They sweat through the pads of their feet. It has been established that people who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks. Seventy percent of people sign their pet’s name on greeting cards and 58 percent include their pets in family and holiday portraits, according to a survey done by the American Animal Hospital Association. The term “dog days” has nothing to do with dogs. It dates back to Roman times, when it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July 3 to August 11, creating exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period dies caniculares, or “days of the dog.”

From Indian vultures to Chinese bees, nature provides the ‘natural services’ that keep the economy going. In What Has Nature Ever Done for Us? How Money Really Does Grow on Trees (Synergetic press, July, 2013), leading and respected british environmentalist Tony Juniper points out that as a species we think that everything nature does for us is free, but it isn’t. Its economic value can, and has been measured. And upon realizing what that value truly is, we would stop treating our natural systems in a destructive manner.

The essence of Deep Work is about evolving from an ego-based sense of self to a consciousness or awareness base.

ichard Moss, International Bestselling Author of Inside-Out Healing and The Mandala of Being; has been hailed by Marianne Wiliamson, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsh, Anthony Robbins, Ram Dass & Larry Dossey

Deep Work is about growing emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. It is about the decision to live a consecrated life, a life in which you have made peace with your past and embraced your shadow. By so doing, you steer your life toward an ever-growing capacity for balance, intimacy and love.

Richard Moss is the Maestro of “Deep Work.” He teaches people how to delve deeply into their inner core so they can achieve a life of “Radical Aliveness,” Unconditional Love, and Real Inner Peace. For 37 years, this globally renowned physician-turned-master healer, international bestselling Hay House author, and workshop leader has been guiding people on profound journeys of self-inquiry and self-discovery that have transformed their relationship with themselves, with their loved ones and with the world. Moss’ work, outlined in two of his bestselling books Inside-Out Healing and The Mandala of Being, is centered in helping people achieve present moment awareness—and to clear away the beliefs, habits and thinking patterns that prevent them from living in a hyperalive, joyful and loving state of being nearly all the time. For more information and to learn about Richard’s November Radical Aliveness retreat, go to: www. richardmoss.com

A desire to do Deep Work starts the moment you say to yourself, “I can be more than who I am. I want to live a life so I become the kind of person I most deeply admire. I want to set an example for others who want to become the fullest human beings they can be.” The intent of engaging in Deep Work is not only to be successful in daily life, but just as important to be successful in the domain of the soul.

How do you define Deep Work? To join me in Deep Work means you want to become the most balanced, awake, alive, and loving person you can be. It means you want your whole life; and most importantly every relationship, to be lived as an expression of your spiritual path. This means you want and are willing to do the deep work of seeing and rooting out everything in you that has limited your ability to love and celebrate life.

In a real sense, there is no end to Deep Work; you begin to recognize the person your soul is calling you to become and decide to bring that inner urge to fruition to the best of your ability, day by day. In Deep Work I want to inflame your heart with the passion to love while challenging you to transform in the places where you are still the victim of fear-based conditioning. You Are a Master of Deep Work – How did Deep Work come to be your signature? My first career was as a physician. I specialized in Emergency and Preventive Medicine and what I loved about medicine was not just bringing useful knowledge to my patients, but being with them and seeing how they needed my heart as much or more than they needed the science. Then, at the age of 30, I had what some would call an experience of Fundamental Realization or Enlightenment. At that time a whole new energy began

moving through my body that opened me to formerly unknown realms of consciousness. It took me years to integrate that awakening, but it gifted me with a highly attuned intuition about the nature of mind and a heightened sense of empathy and compassion. It gave me certain powers such as the ability to transmit healing energy to others through touch and through my voice. Overnight I was able to understand the heart of the ancient spiritual teachings and could discuss them in contemporary language. It was like a mysterious intelligence transplanted itself into me; I was profoundly changed. I have written extensively about this awakening process in my books, The I That Is We, and The Black Butterfly. It is this realization of the interconnectedness of all things that is at the heart of all of my work. After this awakening I left medicine and eventually began working with people in a retreat format, primarily 10 days in duration. This has given me abundant opportunity to observe how people open or resist essential change. I have nearly 37 years of experience working with people from 16 to 90 years of age, and from at least 20 different countries. I have helped people with every illness you can think of. I have danced, metaphorically speaking, with probably every kind of ego-defense, with every kind of grandiose or depressive personality structure and belief systems. I have helped people integrate spiritual openings similar to my own. I have heard and worked with thousands of dreams over these years and have developed a significant gift in helping people engage creatively with their dreams to grow in consciousness. I have become a master of Deep Work through countless hours of interaction

with thousands of troubled, inspired, complex, fascinating, and intelligent people. These people have challenged me to understand their suffering, to respect their training and gifts, and to see how they look at life through their unique perspectives. I have never stopped learning from them and never will. Who Can Benefit from this Work? Everyone. All a participant needs to bring is motivation and willingness. You recognize there is much more to life than you may have as yet lived, and you want to live it and grow yourself. What Are Some of the Elements of Deep Work? What Are Some of the Tools and Steps? In Deep Work we always begin with what each person brings, so each Deep Work gathering is always unique. Nevertheless, there are key elements everyone needs to learn if they want to grow to their fullest potential. A few of these can be summarized briefly: Element One: Understand where and when to begin. The ‘where’ is in your body, and the ‘when’ is always right now, in the present. The fundamental premise of this work is: Who you are begins Now! Not in the past, not when there might have been neglect, or some trauma, not when your relationship broke up, not when you got sick, not even in a remembered bliss you believe was the pinnacle of your life. In this work there is only the Now-moment and how you are present with whatever is happening in and around you. Element Two: Transformation requires learning to live more consistently in the Now. This means learning to observe Continued On Page 24 *

Some are looking for enlightenment; a spiritual experience, and some for non-traditional or therapeutic exercise. Generally speaking, yoga is for everyone. Yoga is defined as union, coming from the Sanskrit word, to yoke; the union of the body, mind and soul. You may ask, “How can doing a succession of “exercises” unite my body, mind and soul”? Each asana/posture works individually and in conjunction with other asanas to build strength, create flexibility, improve circulation, increase breathing capacity, release toxins, and promote relaxation of the body and mind. When the body and mind are in sync, the inner most being, the soul, can be realized and connected. Through stretching, holding, twisting, bending forward, back and to the side, slow and fast movements and conscientious breathing, we get in touch with our physical and physiological body, thus developing deeper awareness, and greater concentration. We are often able to heal our ailments. This ultimately leads to a deeper inner connection with ourselves and the world around us. This also helps us move towards meditation, a state of being in which we are fully aware, while being completely absorbed. B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Center of Las Vegas Visit: www.iyclv.com. Blue Sky Yoga Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a specific style of yoga that was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his teacher T. Krishnamacharya in Mysore, India. This yoga is characterized by its emphasis on “vinyasa” or the dynamic flow between the static postures. The practice has six series of sequences of postures (asanas) that become increasingly more challenging and are always done in the same order. With the awareness on the body and its movement (through vinyasa), the attention continues to move inward with concentration on breath (ujjayi pranayama), physical energy locks (bandhas) and control of the eye gaze (drishti). The development of this system of yoga draws directly from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, a foundational text of classical yoga philosophy containing 196 aphorisms, and the establishment of the meditative state of mind. Here, the Ashtanga Vinyasa system is a movement meditation, where the techniques are designed to withdraw the senses and facilitate focused concentration, so meditation becomes possible. According to K. Pattabhi Jois, “partial yoga methods out of line with internal purpose can build up ‘six enemies’ (desire, anger, greed, illusion, infatuation, and envy) around the heart. [thus] The full Ashtanga system practiced with devotion “leads to freedom within one’s heart.” Blue Sky Yoga Visit: www.BlueSkyYogalv.com Call: 702-592-1396 Dahn Yoga Dahn yoga is based on traditional Korean medicine and Korean Taoist philosophy. “Dahn” is a Korean word that means “energy.” According to Maurice Anderson, Assistant Manager of the Henderson Dahn Yoga, “our exercises and classes are designed to help one become more aware of energy, in their bodies, and cultivate that energy for better health”. A key component of this yoga is experiential learning about energy. It’s an integrated approach which includes body tapping, shaking, breathing awareness and abdominal exercises, as well as stretching. The result is physical relaxation, confidence and peace of mind. This differs from the fitness-oriented yoga and also means a de-emphasis on the form associated with a yoga pose, and a focus on expanding awareness in the experience of each pose. Dahn uses simple, rigorous exercises, but easy to learn. People are encouraged to come with an open mind and prepare for deep relaxation. It’s not unusual for some to quickly improve their flexibility and balance. For those who practice more mainstream yoga, they may find some Dahn Yoga’s methods unfamiliar and recommends they treat Dahn Yoga as a supplement to their

regular yoga. “Dahn Yoga’s unique warm up and breathing exercises can enhance your experience and understanding of other forms of yoga.” Dahn Yoga is adaptable to different body types, conditions and levels of ability.

12 Ayurvedic Herbs that significantly slow down aging

by Sandeep Godiyal

Herbal anti-aging treatment is now being accepted by scientific communities with Ayurvedic treatment being the most well-known. Ayurvedic treatments concentrate on three areas of a person - Vata, Kapha and Pitta. According to Ayurvedic treatment experts, maintaining a perfect balance among these three aspects is the secret to staying young-looking and healthy.

O

ne very effective Ayurvedic treatment is called rasayana. Its two major faculties are what experts call Kutipravesika and Vatatapika. These may be very strange sounding names, but they can be understood easily with a simple explanation. For instance, Kutipravesika’s unique methodology is its requirement that the person being treated should stay in a small shelter that has only one door. There are holes around the shelter for air to pass through, but these holes are all very tiny.

because they contain anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

ViTis

The anti-aging abilities of Vitis are attributed to the grape family members’ antioxidant properties. procyanidins are concentrated in the seeds while resveratrol is concentrated in grapes’ skin.

Rosemary

The rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, amyrenones, rocciferone, seco-hinokiol, oleanoic acid, carnosol and diterpenes ursolic acid contained in the rosemary herb exhibit strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and tyrosinase-controlling properties.

The Goal and The herbs The goal of Ayurvedic treatments is not only to bring about the slowing down of the aging process but also to make the body work at its best and bring vitality and peace to individuals.

Licorice

When to eat White Rice, hoW toMake BRoWn Rice Contrary to popular belief, white rice isn’t a poor food choice for everyone. The truth is white rice contains some health-promoting nutrients, and there are circumstances in which white rice can actually be a healthier choice than brown rice. White rice is brown rice that has been polished down to remove outer layers that contain a number of nutrients, including small amounts of essential fatty acids that tend to go rancid after about 6 to 12 months of being in storage. Stripping brown rice of its husk, bran, and germ decreases the likelihood of spoilage, which allows for longer storage times. Because white rice contains less fiber than brown rice, white rice is the better choice for people who have sensitive, inflamed, or damaged digestive tracts. While fiber is generally helpful for adding bulk to stools and promoting regular bowel movements, too much fiber can be problematic for people with weak gastrointestinal tracts. Over the years, I’ve found people who have colitis and/ or problems with chronic diarrhea tend to experience pain and excessive gas production when they eat brown rice, while white rice tends to be well tolerated. White rice can also be a good choice when first introducing solid foods to babies, since their digestive tracts need time to develop and get acclimated to processing solids, and brown rice requires more digestive strength to break down than white rice. It’s important to note, though, that giving babies too much white rice on its own may lead to constipation, so it’s best to provide a mix of white rice and a variety of well cooked vegetables. In the absence of digestive challenges, the high density of nutrients in brown rice makes it the healthier choice, but it’s essential to prepare it in a way that allows for optimal nutritional yield once inside your digestive tract. proper preparation of brown rice includes soaking it for at least six hours prior to cooking, and cooking with 2 cups of water for every cup of rice. These measures result in soft and fluffy brown rice that is ready to break down in your GI tract and release b vitamins, magnesium, iron, amino acids, carbohydrates, and zinc into your system. brown rice is especially rich in vitamin b1 (thiamin) and vitamin b3 (niacin), both of which are critical to everyday metabolic activities. In case you’re wondering about the nutritional profile of white rice, in addition to being a source of carbohydrates, most varieties of white rice around the world are fortified with vitamin B1, vitamin B3, and iron. White rice is also a fair source of protein. If you don’t eat brown rice but would like to add some to your diet, you may want to start by mixing batches of brown and white rice - this is a good approach for people who are resistant to new flavors and textures. To make a mixed batch of brown and white rice, use 1 cup of water for every cup of white rice, and 2 cups of water for every cup of brown rice, and cook them together in the same pot or rice cooker. For example, for a batch made with half a cup of white rice and half a cup of brown rice, you’ll need to use 1.5 cups of water. Don’t forget to soak the brown rice for at least six hours prior to cooking. We wash and soak our rice at night so that it’s ready to cook in the morning. It’s fine to soak white rice in this manner as well. If you prefer or need to eat mainly white rice, be sure to eat it with plenty of cooked vegetables and/or avocado to prevent constipation. Fiber from well cooked vegetables and avocados does not typically cause irritation to a weakened or damaged digestive tract. please note: If you’re a rice person or plan on becoming one, I highly recommend you look into getting a rice cooker that cooks rice and keeps it warm. A quality rice cooker will save you a lot of time and provide ready-to-eat rice all day long. Dr. Ben Kim, a chiropractor and acupuncturist living in Barrie, Ontario Canada. Jikiden Reiki

By Christine O’Byrne

What Is it?

It was 1922, and 56 year old Mikao Usui had been seeking spiritual enlightenment for some time. His search led him to sit and fast on Mt. Kurama, north of Kyoto, Japan. About three weeks into the fast, he felt a great energy hit him in the forehead. He then came down from the mountain, and discovered that he had a healing energy flowing through him that was unlike anything he had experienced before. He was able to pass this on to others, and teach them his method of using the energy for healing all kinds of injury and illness with success. He had found his enlightenment. He formed the Usui reiki ryoho Gakkai (Society). Usui Sensei went on to teach 20 Shihans, or teachers of this method, who could pass the flow of Reiki onto their students. One of those teachers was a medical doctor, Chujiro Hayashi, who opened his own reiki school in Tokyo. The most well known student of Hayashi Sensei is Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian woman who had come to her parent’s homeland of Japan to have an operation. She cancelled the operation and was healed through receiving reiki treatments from Hayashi Sensei. In 1938, Hayashi Sensei taught Hawayo Takata the Shihan level, and she brought reiki back to Hawaii, where it spread throughout the West and across the globe. Chiyoko Yamaguchi Most of us who are familiar with reiki already know that story. but there was another student that Hayashi Sensei taught in 1938. That student was 17 year old Chiyoko Yamaguchi. Her wise uncle, Wasaburo Sugano, had been trained in the reiki methods by Hayashi Sensei 10 years earlier, and Chiyoko grew up being very familiar with reiki. Sugano realized the value of reiki through his personal experiences, and began investing in his family’s health by paying for them to receive reiki training from Hayashi Sensei.

In 1999 Chiyoko was mentioned in a book written by a reiki teacher in Japan, and people were excited to learn of someone who was practicing just as Hayashi Sensei had practiced. Chiyoko and Tadao were convinced by others to begin teaching workshops, so that more people could learn the original methods in all of their purity. The name Jikiden was given, which means direct teaching. Together, this mother and son started the Jikiden reiki Kenkyukai (society) and began teaching workshops in Kyoto. These Jikiden reiki Kenkyukai accredited workshops are now being taught around the world, and they offer an approach that goes back to the Japanese roots of reiki. There is a strong focus on sensing body toxicity by learning to feel for the different levels of byosen, or accumulation of toxins. The reiki symbols are taught with a true understanding of their Japanese writing and meaning. reiki history is visited with accurate accounts of more recent discoveries. Overall, there is a wonderful simplicity and clarity in Jikiden reiki that makes seasoned reiki teachers and new students alike feel grounded and nourished in their practice, and brings all the pieces together for an experience that is truly enlightening. Frank Arjava petter has been very instrumental in bringing many truths to the surface about the history of reiki, and in the summer of 2000 he began taking Jikiden reiki training from Chiyoko Yamaguchi. Arjava now travels the world teaching all levels of Jikiden reiki. His latest book, This is Reiki, gives much insight into the practice. Chiyoko Yamaguchi passed away in 2003, but thankfully she was able to share her wealth of information before she went, and through her son, Tadao, and Arjava, plus the growing number of Jikiden reiki practitioners and teachers, we have the opportunity to strengthen our foundation and knowledge of this valuable healing method. Christine O’Byrne is a Reiki teacher and practitioner in Las Vegas, NV. She received her Jikiden Shoden and Okuden training from Frank Arjava Petter in 2012, and is organizing his first workshops for this area. Arjava will teach Jikiden Reiki Shoden and Okuden (level 1 and 2) workshops in Henderson, For information call 702-686-6920 or visit: www.ReikiGratitude.com, see pg. 30 Upcoming Events.

Chiyoko Yamaguchi had gone about her reiki practice quietly, diligently and daily for many years without the notice of anyone other than her family and those in her area who heard by word of mouth and went to seek her healing help. Chiyoko had continued to practice and teach using the exact methods that she was taught, and she had passed on the teachings to her son, Tadao. Reiki Development and Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai Hayashi Sensei died in 1940. WWII came, and Japan introduced strict regulations on all practices such as reiki. After the war there were even more restrictions and reiki went underground, only being used in private for family and trusted friends. The Usui reiki ryoho Gakkai has remained a closed group and to this day does not teach anyone outside of the Gakkai. As a result, by the late 1980’s much of the reiki being practiced and taught in Japan was coming from Hawayo Takata’s lineage. Frank Arjava petter lived in Sapporo in 1993, and began offering a reiki teacher course, which had previously been unavailable in Japan. There were also many styles of reiki being developed in the West that blended new practices into the methods.

The

MaesTro of Deep Work your beliefs but not be identified with them and to be fully present with threatening feelings without collapsing into old defensive patterns. The first step is experiencing what it means to be in the Now free of thoughts. Since Now is an abstract concept, we are talking about a state of being that can be described in two ways: the mind is simultaneously focused and spacious, and the body is simultaneously ready and relaxed. To accomplish this we teach a mixture of meditative, movement, breathing, and body-awareness practices. Another step is to learn how your thinking mind leads you out of the Now and therefore out of a conscious connection with your body and your own deepest wisdom. To do this I have developed a powerful mindfulness model, The Mandala of Being™. The Mandala model shows that when your attention leaves the Now there are only four places it can go: Into the past, the Future, thoughts about Yourself which I call Me-stories, or judgments of Others (You-stories). As your thinking moves to any of these four positions, the stories you tell yourself arouse specific emotions. Once you can recognize your stories, instead of dwelling on them you bring yourself back into your body in the present moment. The Mandala work teaches you the greatest suffering is rarely what has happened or is happening in your life; it is what you tell yourself and believe about your situation. Element Three: Differentiating emotions from feelings. Emotions are sensations like anger or jealousy that are aroused by your stories or the beliefs you have incorporated into your identity. Emotions quickly disappear as soon as you bring your attention back to the Now and thinking stops. In contrast, feelings, like belonging or aloneness, are

information about your state of being in the present moment. In Deep Work we know that feeling is a continuum and if we want to rise to the heavens we have to also be able to descend into the abysmal depths. Therefore, an essential part of the work is learning how to be present with intense feelings. Element Four: You do not need to fix yourself; you need to learn to invent yourself in new ways. In this work the emphasis is the fundamental creativity with which you are present with your thoughts and feelings. There is no special state you need to reach, nor some desired outcome to be attained. All you can do is learn to dance with every element of your experience. Element Five: Effort and Grace: Disengaging from the painful arousal created by your stories and choosing to face threatening feelings each time in new ways is the effort you must make. If you make this effort whole heartedly, the mystery of grace comes to support and elevate you. Transformation is never fully in our own hands, but when our effort is sincere we are uplifted far beyond we could ever have expected. what do You Mean when You Say that Fear drives our Lives? Fear is a sensation that we name according to the situation. If you are standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon, you speak of fear of heights: acrophobia. If you are in a crowded place the word is agoraphobia. There are a thousand names for fear, but only one sensation, which of course can be present in varying intensity. Throughout evolution, fear was our teacher of survival. It alerted us to danger. It told us be prepared. This was and remains the healthy aspect of fear. but today, at least in the developed world, we have relatively few threats from outside. Our greatest

threats come from within us, from what we tell ourselves about others or our situation and the anxiety, insecurity, hate, or even terror those thoughts create. Our minds create fears by believing stories such as, “I’ll be all alone in my old age,” or “I won’t have enough money.” There is only one sensation of fear, but limitless stories that will arouse it in us. As long as there is a compulsive avoidance of any threatening or distressing feeling, fear unconsciously remains the god ruling our psychic life. real transformation begins when you are able to bow before fear and acknowledge its power but declare that it is no longer your god. At that moment you become the disciples of a new god: Awareness. Immediately, what awareness asks of you is learn, to the best of your ability, to remain present and open even when there is fear. The sensation of fear is difficult to be with and when you cannot create a big space for it, the immediate tendency is to become self-involved. You contract in upon yourself, your head starts spinning more thoughts; your mind becomes strategic. “How do I regain control?” “How do I get away from this feeling?” All that matters to you is your self-interest and you stop being caring to others and their needs. From a psychological point of view, the combination of fear and selfinterest is probably the greatest threat facing humanity today. It poisons all relationships whether within marriages, families, business, politics, and international affairs. but there is no such thing as being safe; life is and will always be full of uncertainty. The terrible irony is, that when fear intensifies self-interest to unhealthy levels, this weakens healthy connections between people, which only leads to a sense of separation and even more fear.

What each person can do is stop fleeing fearful feelings and learn to create a big space within themselves to face and hold them. Nothing from the outside: no laws, no high tech inventions, no amount of guns, no leader, can make you truly safe. Only you can do that inside yourself. what do You Mean when You Speak of the Power of Awareness? When you awaken to the power of awareness it is no longer your ego that is in control. Now you know that you have thoughts, but you are not just your thoughts. You have feelings, but you are not just your feelings. Suddenly there is a distance between who you are and the thoughts and feelings you are aware of. You are no longer automatically identified with them. This level of consciousness is a relationship that allows you to question your beliefs and to dance with feelings in ever new ways. It is this relationship between consciousness and the things you are conscious of that allows you to invent yourself in ever new ways, thought by thought, feeling by feeling, perception by perception. It is the power of awareness that makes transformation possible. The essence of Deep Work is about evolving from an ego-based sense of self to a consciousness or awareness base. It is a profound change, not unlike moving from a two dimension world to a three dimensional one. That is why it is referred to as transformation.

Celestial Cycles by Motavenda

My thoughts on “Self Containment” by Moti In order to co-exist in health and experience truly loving interactions, we must access higher wisdom and understand the divine laws governing personal boundaries, love of self and love of others. We have a pervading belief on Earth that to demonstrate love to others requires “sacrifice”… a notion not based in truth. In order to see how and where we lose ourselves, we need only tune into our emotions, remain humble to all of our feelings, and apply what we come to realize as we move forward in honesty to create healthier dynamics.

Important, read Sun, rising & Moon signs to have a full picture. So, what’s up the with heavens? The Sun, traveling through Virgo, finds us moving into more self-containment in the midst of an overwhelming world…until it enters Libra on the 22nd and we turn in search of greater self-understanding through engaging the mirrors we see ourselves reflected in all around us. The new Moon in Virgo on the 5th hints at ways we might practice more self-love through supporting our own sense of knowing, regardless of what others think about it, and the Full Moon on the19th in Pisces beckons us to seek connections with others, be totally open and without losing ourselves. Mercury, the planet ruling communications and mental processing, enters Libra on the 9th, inspiring us to move into greater balance when it comes to our exchanges with others. We must know and honor ourselves and feel free to express our truths if we are to truly exist and have meaningful exchanges with those we encounter. Rather than bowing to the reflections others project onto us, through the lens of their own world view, it is far better to move from our own center outward so completely that we come to see our true self reflected to us in the world around us. Venus enters Scorpio on the 11th as we feel a growing love for truth and see the beauty of dwelling deeply with ourselves and others. Pluto turns direct in Capricorn on the 20th. This is a time of deep planetary transformation where we are brought to our knees and humbled by the sight of the truth. Ignoring the shadow will not work any longer, and this period of collective change, reflected in the heavens through Pluto’s movement through this sign, finds us growing courage to release what is not healthy in favor of structures that serve us and allow space for embracing a more positive personal and planetary potential. Life is constantly revealing our true soul condition to us. Through the Law of Attraction, we pull toward us experiences that connect us to unhealed/unfelt emotions so we can release them along with false beliefs forced upon us in our early lives. As Saturn sextiles Pluto on the 21st, we find ourselves yearning to remove what binds our soul and causes stagnation. As Mercury heads into Scorpio on the 29th, we move with greater abandon, engaging more truth in all our encounters. We consider, are we really existing if we cow-tow to the whims and emotional demands of others? Or, should we risk it all and just be authentic by engaging our voice to speak honestly. I vote for truth. Motavenda “Moti” Melchizedek is an artist, writer and astrologer specializing in the areas of personal empowerment, family of origin issues, personal dreams and destiny. Happy Birthday Virgo! August 23rd to September 22nd “I AM ME”

Ruling Planets: Mercury & Chiron ~ Rules: Nervous & Lower Digestive System ~ Symbol: The Vergin ~ Element: Earth ~ Energy: Feminine ~ Quality: Mutable ~ Color: Brown ~ Gem Stones: Agate & Sapphire ~ Flower: Poppies ~ Most Compatible Signs: Taurus & Capricorn ~ High Manifestation of virgo Energy: Experiencing personal divinity through delineating ourselves apart from the collective.~ Shadow Manifestation of virgo Energy: Controlling others in an attempt to coexist in safety. ~ Full Spectrum of the virgo/ Pisces Axis: “I experience my soul apart from the collective so that I might merge with others without sacrificing or losing myself.”

Virgo energy illuminates pathways to self-discovery born of delineating ourselves apart from the collective allowing for greater personal understanding. We can experience our divine nature here on earth. Through baring witness to ourselves by being humble to all of our emotions, we come to know our own soul. We are all unique. Each and every one of us has a soul that is different from every other. A soul filled with beliefs and emotions and passions and desires. We are individuals and, if we are to coexist in health, we must realize who we are. To do this, we must turn toward our own soul, recognize our true soul-condition, and move to align ourselves more completely with love in all ways. As we allow ourselves room to experience ourselves apart from the collective, we move into places where the highest truths and purest love can reach. We become readied for divine revelations to enter our soul and heal us of things disharmonious with love. The Virgo/Pisces axis offers entryways to the divine. With Pisces energy, we let go of ourselves and with Virgo energy, we realize ourselves. The balance comes in turning toward our own souls and coming to see the truth of what is and what is not loving in the beliefs we hold and letting go, through feelings the truth of these things. Then, we become capable of co-existing without abandoning ourselves or asking others to do such things in order to share our lives and our unfoldment with each other.

ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19

Magic is afoot Aries. Now is a great time to tap your creative well for something you have not yet birthed into this world. You can make progress in unimagined ways as you follow the simplest of urges and bring new courage to your work. As you express yourself more fully, you inspire us all.

TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20

Finding peace after times of conflict or instability brings a great feeling of appreciation. There are many people living in dire straights with no entry points to places of rest from exposure to strife. When we can find our way to create and hold peace in our lives, we are grateful.

GEMInI • May 21 to June 20

You end up receiving strength through giving emotional support to others. There is something quite priceless in opportunities for sharing our ourselves with others. oftentimes we have parts of our soul that lay dormant because life goes on and we don’t have people in our midst who feel we can share with.

CAnCER ~ June 21 to July 22

To be released from oppression, we must reach deep inside in search of places that have us believing we must accept unloving things from others. It is amazing how many of us were taught that being controlled, or controlling others, is ok. We are out of harmony with love when we engage in these things.

LEo ~ July 23 to Aug. 22

You shine as an individual but now see the benefit of engaging works of collaboration. It is true that we can accomplish more with others than we do when we work alone in some circumstances. Seek out those who share your positive visions and see what you can make happen together. You will be amazed.

vIRGo ~ Aug. 23 to Sept 22

Your nature is to work and serve. Now life asks you to relax into enjoying what is around you. It is part of becoming more balanced. Life is not meant to be all work. To be truly open to what life is offering, we must be willing to embrace the joyful, playful invitations for fun.

LIBRA ~ Sept. 23 to oct. 22

opening up to new possibilities materially, when we feel destabilized, is not always an emotionally appealing process. Still, your nature is to seek balance and this inclination serves you well. You can simply walk across the unknown, jumping from rock to rock, and regain your balance along the way.

SCoRPIo ~ oct. 23 to nov. 21

Simply look around you and bring elements together, changing them into something brand new. Through forging the new into being, you transmute what has become stagnant into something pristine and useful. What are you inspired to create? Look around, you discover many things worthy of using in the process.

SAGITTARIUS ~ nov. 22 to dec. 21

Take what fills your spirit through union with others and bring it forward with you to the times you move alone through the world. As we ebb and flow into and out of each others lives, we can help each other to learn, grow and continue in our development during the days of solitude.

CAPRICoRn ~ dec. 22 to Jan. 19

Letting go of unworkable ideas will serve you well in the long run. There is no sense in wasting time spinning your wheels when the time or circumstances are not right for ideas you want to bring to fruition. It is better to shelve such things and bring them forward at a later date.

AQUARIUS ~ Jan. 20 to Feb. 18

on the other side of cruelty there are lessons we can make use of. It is astounding how much unkindness exists in our world. The more we can learn and heal through exposure to such things, the better the chance we have of helping to bring things more into harmony with love on the Earth.

PISCES ~ Feb. 19 to March 20

Despite what we have been led to believe, great good comes when we feel everything without resistance. There is truth in the notion that, when we grieve, we end up cleansed and freer. When we get down to the causal level of current emotions, our life and our world begin to change on fundamental levels.

Empowered Numerology by Michele Avanti Alpha numeric numerology Chart

The

Number Eight

We have looked at each number as it evolved through to number Seven. Now let us look at the number Eight; a number of beauty, balance and eternal or infinite movement. The number Eight itself is a beautiful curved dance of symmetry, balanced top and bottom. This graceful figure is seen in a racetrack, a challenging dressage movement, and in the ancient timekeeper, the hourglass. All these things contain parts of the beauty and challenges of Eight’s frequencies. On the racetrack, the car speeds in a circular pattern only to cross over and shift in the other direction. This requires sharp intellect, fast response and perfect balance. In the act of the figure eight in dressage, the speed is replaced with precise rhythm; also requiring perfect balance, and sharp intellect on the part of horse and rider to make flying lead changes as they cross the center point. The hourglass is a symbol of balance and shows the sequence in time through a path of beauty as the sand slowly and precisely measures an hour. All these elements are part of the frequency of Eight…beauty, rhythm, balance, speed of thought, sharp intellect, and even the balance of time.

This chart allows you to quickly access the number related to any letter. Thus you can identify what numbers are active through a name, or address. When looking at the chart, the letters listed below each number will activate that frequency and you can add them together to find the power of a word. For example, the name, Art. Look at the column with number one at the top. There you will find A, thus A=1, r is located in the 9 column, so r=9, and T is located in the 2 column, so T=2. Thus for Art we would add, 1+9+2=12, which when reduced = 3.

Unfortunately, when most Eights are out of balance, they turn to others for insight. This may work, however, since the responsibility of learning is placed on the individual, the advice of others usually creates strife within the Eight. They fight with themselves and this leads to even more unbalance. because the Eight is outgoing, a good listener and aware of others needs, in order to achieve mastery, they must practice listening to their own hearts and fulfilling their own needs. Eights need to learn to say, “No.” and set boundaries to maintain balance.

SePTemBer & ITS FrequeNcIeS

September is: S (1) + E (5) + P (7) + T (2) + E (5) + M (4) + B (2) + E (5) + R (9) = 31 = 4 2013: 2 + 0 + 1 + 3 = 6 Total: 4 + 6 = 10 = 1

balance in Eights frequency is active within every level; physical, emotional, mental and subconscious. Additionally it includes karma. Karmic balance is seen physically in the court and prison system. The ancient scales of justice form a figure eight. Egypt’s guardian of the underworld, Anubis, checked the karmic scales by weighing one’s heart against the feather of Maat, the goddess who, at the point of creation, is known to change chaos to harmony and balance.

September’s frequency of Four is earthy and health oriented. It asks us to look at the four cornerstones we have built in our lives. Are we comfortable with our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual achievements? Do we feel in control of our lives? Are we healthy, physically fit, emotionally happy, mentally acute and spiritually aware? If any area is lacking, September’s frequency will help us set new goals and begin to establish habits that will lead to fulfillment when the Four revisits us in its steamy, watery frequency in November.

Thus, an individual Eight may create harmony and beauty in different ways. It may be through the arts or diplomacy, by initiating balance through the courts; or they may be brought into balance required to pay for karmic deeds from this or some past life.

by adding 2013’s six frequency to this month’s Four, we activate One, which gives us the singular focus of power to manifest the goals we set and the choices we make under the Four. Use September’s frequencies for your greatest benefit. Determine where you are not satisfied with your life and tell the universe you are ready to take control. Then create the plan you need to achieve your goal and know when November arrives, you will be well on your way to the healthy, happy, abundant life you desire.

The letters of the word Eight, reduce to the single digit Four, which is the stable frequency of the four cornerstones of creation: physical, emotional, mental and subconscious, and the four elements: earth, fire, water and air. Eight is the higher octave of Four taking all that Four signifies and erasing the challenges that form in each ninety degree corner. In the Eight, all of Creation comes together…seamlessly moving in balanced, infinite creative motion. The frequency of Eight contains the symmetry of Creation. It is the number of celestial music, the music of our solar system. people who carry the Eight frequency through their date of birth or name, have a deep awareness and need for balance. They are the artists, musicians, decorators, designers, mediators, diplomats, judges and jailers. They see the world, people and all life through a balancing filter. Eights frequency creates a need to fill the world with beauty. Even if an Eight is poor, they will find a way to create beauty in their environment, for to live without it kills their passion and is a kind of death to an Eight. Their need for peace and harmony is often the root of their challenges. An Eight will forfeit their own needs and desires in order to make their home or workplace more harmonious. This may include taking on more work or more projects to help everyone else out, or to keep others from complaining. Eventually their energy is drained, they become overwhelmed and lose their state of balance; their own inner peace. These periods are called, “The dark night of soul.” They have times of feeling lost and unsure as to what to do. Now the Eight feels frustrated and desperately requires balance. The greatest help an Eight can get is through Mother Earth. Connect with her in the grass, sand, snow, creek, or ocean. Ask her to drain the emotions from you. Then breathe deeply and allow the air to clear your mind. Now take the time to review your own needs and erect the boundaries you need to rebalance.
