Publisher Have you ever found yourself wondering Ò why am I hereÓ ? or perhaps, Ò how did I get into this messÓ ? So, what is life all about? It would appear, that in todayÕ s world, Ò survivalÓ is a common term while Ò thrivingÓ is more or less uncommon to most of the population É why is that? We could say, Ò itÕ s the economyÓ or itÕ s the Ò luck of the drawÓ É is it? What if I were to tell you it isnÕ t the luck of the draw nor is it the economy? You might argue with this statement; however, lhow many of us play the blame game with it being either the economy or something else? We must embrace the realization of our responsibility that we carry into this life. For me, I am exactly where I am today because of choices I have madeÉs ome good, some not so good. At times IÕ m like so many others; I would love to blame it on the economy or outside influences. The reality of the situation isÉI put myself here because of my thought processes; my perceptions if you will. I know we have all heard it time and again, Ò watch what you thinkÓ . I believe that eventually we stop Ò thinkingÓ about what we are thinking because we have heard it so often and therefore seem to be on autopilot. ItÕ s like when we hear it, our eyes glaze over and we automatically respond, Ò Yeah, I know youÕ re rightÓ É then we move onto other thoughts and go about our day. That’s life as we have experienced or been taught.

As individuals and as a whole, we are no longer our ancestors. In order for true change to occur, we must outwit our thoughts and see a different perceptionÉt hat of love, forgiveness, a bright future. DonÕ t just think it; feel it, visualize it and be it. There is so much to explore. Are you willing to accept the challenge of going beyond Ò survivingÓ into the beautiful world of Ò thrivingÓ at every level? Be at peace and strive to do your best. Walk the path of unlimited possibilities. In Love & Light,

LetÕ s look at the word Ò survivalÓ and itsÕ meaning. 1. Continued existence; 2. Staying alive; 3. Carry on despite hardships. On the other hand, Ò thrivingÓ means; 1. Flourishing; 2. Growing; 3. Succeeding; 4. Prospering; 5. Blooming; 6. Developing wellbeing. So, what it comes down to is that we must move away from our ancient ancestorÕ s beliefs and realize that this Ò todayÓ world is beyond the ancient world.

Wanna’ Be Happy?

Practice!

If ever there was a miserable day, this is it: your six year old threw a tantrum because her favorite socks have a hole in them, you SO forgot about an early meeting, so you had to take the kids to school rushing all the way, hair still damp from your shower because who had time to dry it, much less style it…you got a ticket for speeding, so now you’re late to work. The boss is upset with you–you brought the wrong documents to the team meeting, you have a late meeting you must attend, the babysitter called to say she can’t stay later than planned, you’re scrounging to find another babysitter, the traffic is murder on the way home, the pizza you ordered is cold, your kids are fighting, your significant other is fighting on the phone with his brother over who-knows-what, and you shut yourself in the bathroom to silently (you hope) scream “I just want to be happy!!!” Which seems to be utterly impossible at the moment. It would be, if happiness were something that happened to you. But actually, happiness is, to a large degree, a choice of perspective. Happiness isn’t something that happens to you, at least not on a regular basis. Happiness is a state of being, something you cultivate. Happiness is something you practice, with intention and persistence, until happiness becomes your default, not your “sometimes if I’m really lucky.” Say what?! How in the heck could anyone be happy given your day? Change your perspective. Switch your focus. Look for the upside in every experience. Your child is throwing a tantrum over her favorite socks? How wonderful that your six year old has an opinion, knows what she likes and doesn’t! Your significant other forgot his/her meeting? Not your favorite circumstance, but great that he/she has work to go to, and thank Heavens there are two of you so one of you can always pick up the slack. You had to rush to get the kids to school, and yes, you got that ticket, but you also fulfilled your parental duty and got the kids there. OK, you don’t like getting a ticket, but it’s a good reminder to slow down--you could have hurt someone inadvertently. You brought the wrong documents, not very swift, but you’re usually attentive and it’s a reminder to be more so. Wonderful that you didn’t lose your job over this, and great that you have a job. The pizza was cold? It

can get heated up, or else you can pretend you’re back in your teens when cold pizza was a delectable treat. And on and on. If you are bound and determined to be happy, you will be ruthless in changing your point of view every time you find yourself dumping into an unhappy conclusion. Life happens, but happiness is a choice. There are few truly dramatic grievous events where you can’t reach a happier conclusion or assessment of the situation. People say “Don’t be a Pollyanna,” but they’re missing the point. Pollyanna wasn’t ignoring reality, she approached reality with optimism. What the Pollyanna story reveals is that despite all odds, because of her attitude, Pollyanna thrived! So do be a Pollyanna—choose to be happy as often and as much as humanly possible, and you will thrive.

Tellers of a New Tale

When I go to the local bank I always enjoy seeing a teller named Emily, a delightful retired elementary school teacher with a kind word for everyone. One morning while I was making a deposit at Emily’s window, the shrieking siren of a passing emergency vehicle pierced the bank. “That’s the first one today,” Emily noted. “You count them?” I asked her. “I always say a prayer as they go by,” she answered. I was touched by Emily’s use of the emergency. For many of us, a siren is an annoyance. Or we shrivel to think that someone might be hurt or in trouble. But Emily uses emergencies to practice healing. She is not just a bank teller. She is a teller of blessing. I used to complain about the news, which is so often negative. Then I heard Michael Beckwith mention that he considers the news to be his prayer list. Hmmm. Is the news something to worry about, or is it a platform upon which to practice holding a higher vision?

New York philanthropist Milton Petrie scanned the newspaper every morning to see whom he could help. One day he read about a beautiful young model who had been viciously attacked by thugs hired by the boyfriend she had left. The article showed heart-rending photographs of three long hideous scars that ran the length of both cheeks and her forehead; hundred of stitches were required to put her face back together. A Venus had become a Frankenstein. Moved by the girl’s plight, Mr. Petrie called the model to his office and told her that he would give her twenty thousand dollars a year for the rest of her life. Thrilled to receive such kindness in the wake of her anguish, she had numerous surgeries that restored her skin and beauty to near-perfection. As I watched her being interviewed on television, I noticed an additional glow not obvious in her pre-attack model photos. She had been the recipient of grace. I saw a documentary about cosmetic surgeons who donated their services to help people who had become disfigured, primarily women who had been beaten. In each case there was a moment when the doctor removed the bandages, and the woman looked in the mirror to see her new face for the first time. All the recipients burst into tears. A few hours of the surgeons’ time led to a lifetime of better for their patients. These doctors were tellers of a new tale. A Course in Miracles teaches that every act is either an expression of love or a call for love. All antisocial or aberrant behavior is a call for love. We do not heal by punishment. We heal by validation. In a certain African tribe, when a person commits a crime, that person is not punished. Instead, he or she is called to the center of the circle of tribes people, where everyone chants that person’s unique song to him or her. The tribe realizes that the cure for social ills is not chastisement. It is connection to self, community, and spirit.

Business also has a new tale, if we are willing to tell it. Two basic attitudes underlie all business transactions: 1. What can I get? or 2. How can I help? Ultimately only the attitude of service will be rewarding. My mentor, Carla Gordan, coached many people by telephone. One day, while visiting her home, I saw the phone she used for coaching. On the back of the handset she had taped a small reminder note to herself. It said, “How can I help?” Many people are suffering in the world as we know it. Ian Maclaren said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” Sometimes even apparently happy people are struggling with issues you don’t see. So ultimately kindness, not intellectual prowess, financial stability, or worldly power is the most valuable resource. Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “When I was young, I used to admire intelligent people; as I grow older, I admire kind people.” I used to think people who advertised themselves as gurus, healers, teachers, and enlightened beings were the great souls on Earth. As I grow in experience, I consider people who demonstrate kindness to be the most advanced souls. Waitresses, chambermaids, van drivers, and custodians are among the holiest people I know. They care about making the world a better place more than what they can get for themselves. Helping others brings them greater reward than acquiring more stuff or becoming enlightened. Many of these hidden saints have never attended a self-improvement seminar, but they improve the lives of everyone they touch by being present with them. Albert Schweitzer said, “… the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.” Life is not a series of opportunities to get somewhere. Life is a series of opportunities to be somewhere. Difficulties are not oppressions from a dark source. They are invitations to be a light source. Bank teller Emily has more change to offer than I can count.

Wisdom from Wayne

I Am One WIth All lIvIng thIngs

All thAt I hAve seen teAches me tO trust the creAtOr fOr All I hAve nOt seen Give thanks for the gift of love and the oneness that unites all living things. You are a divine creation—a piece of the divine intelligence that supports everything and everyone. In a world which this divine intelligence creates everything, there can be no accidents. “All that I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson My son Sands sent me a story about the passing of conservationist Lawrence Anthony in South Africa. Anthony is well-known for his courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during the war of 2003 in Iraq. He wrote about his experiences rescuing a rogue elephant herd in his bestselling book, The Elephant Whisperer. Sands knew I would love the remarkable story of what happened at Lawrence Anthony’s game reserve in South Africa after his death last year. The elephants he saved from extermination walked 12 miles in a sort of funeral procession from their habitat to gather around his house. How did they know their human protector and friend had passed?

As Emerson says, we take what we have seen and trust our Creator on what’s unseen. If all life is connected, the elephants would naturally know to come to their friend’s home to mourn him. Everything in this physical universe of ours is, in some way, connected to everything else. When we attempt to isolate anything, we find that it is in some way part of everything else in the universe. Just as it is absurd for a single wave to see itself as separate from the ocean, so it is for any of us not to recognize our oneness with all creation. If we imagine that we’re free of all divisions, all separation, and all judgments about this world and the life inhabiting it, we can begin to understand oneness. The place we want to enter is of simply being. We can picture the Source of being as an energy that’s as available to us all as is the sky. There’s no distinction between anyone or anything because everyone and everything is Spirit. This Spirit is God, our Source of being. We are it, and it is who we are. We relax into the silence of where we came from. We discover the meaning of life by being able to return to the oneness. The closer we get to experiencing our original nature, which is Spirit, the more peace and purpose flows through us. And the more we can recognize and accept miracles. The story of Lawrence Anthony and the elephants tells me that something in the Universe is greater, deeper and more powerful than we know. We can trust our Creator on this. Like the elephants, let us be grateful for the Spirit that connects us and enables us to love.

What is your

number?

The workshop leader showed us a chart indicating how long it is estimated men and women will live. Then he told us to subtract our age and asked, “What’s your number? What do you want to accomplish over that time span? And what are you willing to do to make that happen?” His questions were meant to instill us with a sense of urgency.

I didn’t relate at all. According to his chart, my number is 20. But if that is when I might leave this planet, I think I want to fulfill my dreams way before that. Personally I have given myself the number 3. That’s how long I have to put the foundation for my personal dream in place. Then I remembered my number could be tomorrow, because we never really know how much time we have in this human form we call “Joe,” “Mary,” “Carlos,” or “Jasmina.” Where as the number 20 didn’t have meaning for me, it did get me to look at what I was leaving undone and why. So I guess the exercise was successful after all. The time to act is now, which makes my number “now.” Yes I know “now” is not a true number, yet as I look at my desk, I ask, “When am I going to clear it?” Tomorrow is not an acceptable answer, but “today” is (as soon as I finish this article, of course). I think it’s normal for us to think we have more time. I know I can get caught up in that illusion. “I can always go to that show next week,” or “I can take that trip next year,” or “The dirty dishes can wait. They’re not going anywhere.” Does any of this sound familiar? Ah, yes, always more time, or better yet, we put someone else’s needs ahead of our own.

share it. My letter’s number is 18 (months). We’ve also done this exercise at Unity Center. Our number is 3 (years). I am amazed that in both cases, what was imaged and anchored in future memory is already coming into physical reality via avenues I had not expected. Bottom line: pick a number, create a powerful, specific, vibrant image, and allow the universe to send you the resources necessary to realize your future memory. Amazing!

One of the challenging things about deciding how best to make use of your number (whatever it is and however you determine it) is knowing what is truly important to you. What is your passion? I was sitting with a friend recently who is not very happy with her job. This woman is creative, articulate, intelligent, and has the ability to communicate deep spiritual concepts in clear, understandable terms that people can relate to. I asked her why she didn’t leave her job and build on her considerable talents. She responded that she felt “stuck,” and this wasn’t the first time it had happened to her. As we continued our conversation I invited her to pick a date a few years in the future, image what she would like to be doing at that time, and then create a future memory to capture that image and give it life. Future memory is a term I heard a few weeks ago that describes a practice I’ve often followed where you create the conversation (either verbal or written) you will be having in (you pick the number) years hence describing all you have accomplished. In essence, it is asking that you pick a number by which time you will have accomplished your vision. It gives the vision life by being very specific about what those accomplishments were. And it calls on the emotional energy that comes from having had such fulfilling, gratifying experiences. I remember when I was first required to do this as part of my coach certification program. I was to write a letter to a friend dated 18 months in the future. At the time I was in between jobs and traveling around the country with no idea of where I would land or what I would be doing. I didn’t want to write the letter, expressed my feelings about being forced to do it, and was told if I wanted credit for the course I was taking, I would complete the assignment. Unwillingly I wrote the letter and promptly forgot it. Two years later I found the letter in my files. I read it and discovered that without even focusing on my number of 18 months, I had accomplished almost 75% of what was in the letter—I was living in the Southwest, I owned a house very similar to the one I had imaged, I was a minister at a church with a high vibrational spiritual energy, and I felt at home. It was a remarkable demonstration of the power of imaging, being specific, calling on the emotions and excitement that result when we have been successful, and selecting a target date, or number. I am writing another letter. I have an accountability partner with whom I will

EnlightEning ViEws Excerpt from Turning Point

Everyone Is on the Journey A big difference between trips that we may have taken in the past and the big journey that we’re on now is that today we don’t get to pick our traveling companions. The reason is simple: Everyone on Earth is on our journey. No one can be left behind. Our world today is so deeply interconnected on so many levels that it’s impossible for the transformation that’s emerging in one part not to show up in other places as well. I’ve seen this firsthand in my travels to some of the most remote and isolated places remaining in the world—like Tibet, for example. In 2005, following a number of previous pilgrimages to the monasteries of the Tibetan Plateau, I saw for the first time the eerie glow of cell phones illuminating the dark recesses of centuries-old buildings as the pockets under the robes of monks and nuns lit up. For the people living in these secluded monasteries, their former world of isolation is now on a path of connectivity. The change that this path carries is a promise that their traditions will never be the same. A Crisis in Thinking We don’t need to go to Tibet, however, to see the evidence of how

By Gregg Braden

dramatically the world is shifting. Change is reflected everywhere, both in the ways in which the world works, as well as in the ways things no longer work. The era of an oil-based economy, for example, is giving way to a new economy based upon forms of energy that are cleaner and more sustainable. The centralized production of our food from corporate farms half a world away is giving way to the healthy and sustainable production from small farms that invigorate local economies. The practice of creating wealth from industries that destroy our planet is giving way to socially responsible models of investing. And as the world of the past slips away and the new one emerges, the clash of new against old highlights another, even greater crisis, one that we all face, yet which we’ll probably never read about or hear discussed in the popular media. It’s a silent crisis that’s like the proverbial elephant in the room—something that everyone sees yet no one acknowledges. Arguably the greatest crisis that we face in our time of extremes is a crisis in thinking. And our thinking is the very key to the way we deal with the needs of the emerging world. You and I are being tasked with something that’s never been done. We’re being challenged to radically shift the way in which we think of ourselves and our relationship to the world, and to do so faster than any generation in history has ever done before. Our willingness to think differently about ourselves and the world will be the key to the success of our journey. And while it’s definitely a big journey that we’re on, it’s also a short trip, because the world we’re traveling to is already here. It’s with us right now. We hAve The soluTions Fortunately for us, the technology to solve the biggest challenges we face has already been discovered. The biggest problems we could ever imagine are already solved. The advanced principles are already understood. They all exist in this moment, right here, right now, and are at our fingertips. All that stands between us and the new world—where energy comes from clean, abundant sources and is accessible to every member of our global family; where clean, healthy food is plentiful and accessible to every mouth on the planet; where every human is able to obtain the basic necessities to live a comfortable, meaningful life—is the thinking that makes room in our lives for what already exists in the world. Are we willing to embrace the thinking that makes such possibilities a priority? Will we allow the science that reveals the deepest truths about our relationship to ourselves, one another, and the Earth to become the passport for our journey?

Understanding the Meaning of Orbs Perhaps you’ve seen photos from your friends or in this magazine of orbs. Some are quite simple, appearing like a thousand light bulbs suspended in the air. Others are quite complex, with intricate designs and shapes. So what are “orbs?” You’ll be intrigued by the answers I received in my meditations. Orbs are spirits in many different forms. They are energy with consciousness. Their energy is just above the human eye spectrum, which is why they normally can only be seen in photographs. Few humans have the ability to see them with their naked eyes. They cannot be touched—your hand would go right through them. Let’s begin with the more complex orbs. These are guides and more advanced souls. They can be round with intricate designs, which denote how advanced the soul fragment is. They can change shape to hexagonal, with one flat side, or even a smiley face to show off for the camera. They can be the size of a soft ball or the size of a basketball. They can be different colors to denote how many lives on earth they’ve lived. They appear flat when photographed, but are actually balls of energy. They can be guides for humans, and the same orbs are often seen in photos taken of the same person. Others are simply photographed as they move from one location to another, interacting with each other, should they wish. And to answer an obvious question, these orbs are not souls transitioning after death, although a fragment of the soul fragment may remain and become one of your guides for learning purposes. Only one percent of the orbs are guides.

By Tom T. Moore

such as the East Coast, but few in a lightly populated region such as Montana. These staging areas are where literally thousands of orbs can be seen in photos. In the future I’m told, someone will take the photos of the complex orbs and will blow up the photos and start comparing what is the same and what are the differences between orbs. They will then begin to unlock the secrets of the orbs. I could also see people mapping these staging areas and other people charging a small fee for people to come onto their property and spend the evening photographing thousands of orbs as they move through their area. If you wish to experiment with this yourself, gather two or three friends together one evening and say out loud, “I request a Most Benevolent Outcome for our guides to show themselves in these photographs, thank you!” Choose a dark area, which will provide a good contrast to the orb images and then take some photos. Who knows, you might be in the middle of a staging area, but at the very least you may view your guides. Have fun!

Then what are the other 99% of the orbs we see in photographs? Most are the soul fragments of dogs, cats, birds, insects, and other animals, which have just finished an earth life and are being guided through energy tubes by human soul orbs. The human soul fragment orbs gain knowledge through doing this service. The dog and cat orbs, as an example, are shepherded to what are termed, “staging areas,” where their group souls assign them to their next earth mother. They spend little time in spirit form before their next life. Keep this in mind when your beloved cat or dog or other pet dies, you can say, “I request a Most Benevolent Outcome for my (beloved pet’s name) to return to us, thank you!” Most of the time you’ll be granted your wish through the assistance of your own guardian angel. There are separate staging areas for dogs, for cats, birds, insects, etc., and these staging areas are set up both energetically and geographically. As an example, there could be several staging areas for dogs in a densely populated region

Surprising New Findings About Your Dog’s Bond with You

By Dr. Karen Becker

Researchers Observed That Upon Hearing a Human Voice, the Same Area of the Brain Is Activated in Both People and Dogs What Andics and his team discovered was that the temporal pole, which is the forward-most part of the temporal lobe, was activated in both the humans and the dogs when human voices were played. It’s an established fact that human brains respond more intensely to human sounds than any other types of sounds. But what surprised the researchers was finding that the location of activity in the dogs’ brains is very similar to where it is in the human brain. And actually, the fact that the area exists at all in dogs’ brains is a surprise, as this is the first time it has been seen in a non-primate animal. When emotional sounds like crying and laughter were played for each group of study participants, the dogs’ response again showed a very similar pattern of activity to that of the humans, with an area near the primary auditory cortex “lighting up” in both groups. And interestingly, when emotional-sounding dog vocalizations were played, for example, whimpering or fierce barking, once again the humans and dogs had a similar reaction. According to Dr. Andics:

In another study of canines using an fMRI

scanner, researchers in Hungary discovered that doggy brains react to voices in the same way human brains do. And they even respond as we do to crying, laughter, and other sounds that are emotional in nature. Based on their observations, Attila Andics, lead study author from the Comparative Ethology Research Group at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences said: “We think dogs and humans have a very similar mechanism to process emotional information.”

“We know very well that dogs are very good at tuning into the feelings of their owners, and we know a good dog owner can detect emotional changes in his dog – but we now begin to understand why this can be.”

Follow-Up Study Will Focus on Response to Words vs. Sounds While the dogs did respond in measurable ways to the human voice, their response to canine sounds was much stronger. The researchers also noted that the dogs weren’t able to differentiate between environmental sounds and vocal noises to the same degree humans can. Prof. Sophie Scott of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London would like to see a study done to evaluate dogs’ responses to words rather than just sounds. She makes the point that human cries and laughter are relatively primitive sounds that can mimic animal vocalizations, which may be causing the response observed in the study dogs. “A step further would be if they had gone in and shown sensitivity to words in the language their owners speak,” said Scott. Lead study author Andics agrees and says his next round of experiments will focus on dogs’ sensitivity to their owners’ words.

Dogs Learn to Lie Motionless in the Scanner for Several Minutes For the study, 11 pet dogs were chosen and trained using a positive reinforcement approach. The dogs were given a dozen sessions of preparatory training followed by seven sessions in the fMRI scanner room. At the conclusion of the training, the dogs were able to lie motionless in the scanner for up to eight minutes. The experience was apparently so positive for the dogs that according to Andics, “Once they were trained, they were so happy, I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it.” For comparison purposes, the researchers evaluated the brains of 22 human volunteers in the same fMRI scanner used for the dogs. They played 200 different sounds to both the two- and four-legged participants, including environmental noises like automobile sounds, human sounds (not words), and canine communications.

Keep Yourself, Your Pets and Your Home Healthier with Apple Cider Vinegar

Great Animal Photobombers

By Sue Woledge Apple cider vinegar is an age-old remedy that has a surprising number of uses, and while several books have been written on this amazing remedy, many of us are still unaware of just how useful apple cider vinegar (ACV) can be. The following are just a few of the ways that we can use ACV to add to our health and our lives:

1. Tummy troubles, indigestion and bloating

Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drink before meals to improve digestion. This will also help prevent indigestion and bloating, and a little ACV taken in water at the first sign of heartburn will usually stop it in its tracks. Because ACV is antibacterial, it can also help prevent the bacterial infections that may cause food poisoning.

2. Healthy hair

Rinse hair after washing with a mixture made of two tablespoons of ACV and 500 ml of water. It will balance the pH of the hair, leaving it thicker, smoother and healthier. The vinegar smell will dissipate once the hair dries.

3. Alkaline body

ACV is commonly used as a health tonic mixed in water with honey, as it promotes alkalinity. This means that it can be of benefit for many of the diseases caused by an overly acidic body such as arthritis, gout and even cancer.

4. Cure hiccups

A teaspoon of undiluted ACV is said to sometimes stop hiccups immediately!

5. Post-exercise drink

ACV mixed with water has been used as an antidote for lactic acid and fatigue after working out, as it provides potassium and other nutrients as well as valuable enzymes that assist with recovery.

6. Night cramps

One or two tablespoons of ACV mixed with water and honey to taste can be sipped prior to sleep to prevent night cramps.

7. Diabetes

ACV may be of benefit to diabetics, as it has been shown to reduce blood glucose.

8. Candida

Regular consumption of ACV can assist with improving gut flora and reversing the overgrowth of Candida and other unwanted bacteria or yeasts.

9. Weight management

ACV has a history of being used as an aid for weight loss and weight management. It has been shown to not only have beneficial effects on blood glucose and insulin levels but also appetite control.

10. Pet health

ACV can also be used to keep your dog healthy. Add a little to drinking water or food as a general health tonic, to help digestion, reduce allergies and prevent parasites. Spray a water/ACV mixture on skin conditions, ear infections and thinning fur and use as a rinse after bathing.

11. Nontoxic cleaning

Make a nontoxic cleaning spray using a 50/50 mixture of water and ACV in a spray bottle. Use this to clean hard surfaces. It absorbs odors and has antibacterial properties.

12. Spider and insect bites and stings

Make a simple poultice using Slippery Elm Bark powder, a couple of drops of lavender oil and ACV to mix into a paste. Spread thickly on bites, stings or splinters and cover with a dressing. Repeat as often as necessary until heat, pain and swelling has gone. Of course, don’t forget to use apple cider vinegar in salad dressings and always ensure that you buy raw, unpasteurised ACV with the mother, which can be identified by cloudiness or floaties in the vinegar.

after becoming unhappy at how consumers are not being told about new, scientifically proven ways to boost their own bodies ability to release new stem cells. “Stem Cells” was written to inform consumers that there are now scientifically proven ways to increase the release of active stem cells in our own body without spending tens of thousands of dollars or undergoing invasive medical procedures. Never before in history have we understood so much about stem cells and the important role they play in living a long and healthy life. In “Stem Cells: Activating Your Body’s Natural Repair Kit”, you’ll learn; the unique role stem cells play in your body, the most common stem cell therapies offered today and the latest research regarding natural alternatives. This book does not give medical advice; it deals with some aspects of overall wellness. Nothing can replace a personal relationship with a physician. You should always seek qualified medical advice with any questions regarding your health.

MIchelene K. bell I hope something I share gives you yet another reason to celebrate the miracle of the human body! ILT: What Are Stem Cells? CH: “By the time you finish reading this sentence, 50 million of your stem cells will have died and will have been replaced by others.” Stem cells are the building blocks from which every organ and tissue in the human body is formed. There are roughly between ten (10) and one hundred (100) trillion cells in the human body. Billions of cells need to be replaced every day in order for the body to remain healthy. Modern science is focused on how stem cells can be used to address a wide range of health problems. Of particular interest to researchers are primitive stem cells. P r i m i t i v e s t e m c e l l s a re a d u l t cells that have the amazing ability to change into all the different types of specialized cells needed to aide your body in recovering and repairing itself; two functions that are critical to one’s overall longevity and wellbeing. is constantly undergoing a process of regeneration. With the exception of some stem cells in the cortex that are with us from the time we’re born until the time we die, our cells are in a constant state of renewal. According to Deepak Chopra’s “Ageless Mind, Timeless Body”, the regeneration rates in a healthy body are: • New skin every 30 days. • New liver every 45 days. • New stomach lining every 5 days. • New skeleton in 7 years. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also noted that stem cells “have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues, they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.” ILT: How are stem cells and aging related? CH: Stem cells have a finite life. As they age they begin to die off, they don’t function as well, and eventually become unable to grow and divide. This is when our tissues and organs begin to lack the new cells they need to regenerate and we begin to experience aging. Effects Of Aging: • Bones become weaker and easier to break. • 5% muscle mass lost every 10 years after the age of 35. • Eyesight disintegration as the lens stiffens and becomes denser. • Diminished sense of taste, smell and hearing around 50 years of age. • Prone to cancer (one of the top 3 causes of death in the United States according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC Report 2011)). Most cells in your body are replaced by one cell dividing into two. These copied cells should be exact matches but as we get older they don’t always reproduce so accurately. The DNA in the cell, the genetic instruction book, is in two pieces wound together. To form a new cell, the two pieces separate and then the cell adds a new side to each

strand of DNA leaving two sets of DNA and the cell then splits with one set of DNA on each side. At the end of each strand of DNA is a small tail called a telomere. Telomeres help assure the proper replication of the DNA. As we age and each time a cell divides the telomere becomes shorter and shorter. The shorter it becomes the more likely it is the copied cell will not be correct. This is one of the main reasons we age. Our cells are simply not reproducing or working as well as needed for optimum health. ILT: What types of stem cell therapies are available today? CH: There are two common stem cell therapies; Autologous and Allogeneic. Both require the harvesting, concentration, and activation of the cells. In allogeneic treatments the patient receives stem cells from someone other than themselves. While this process has shown benefits, the rejection of someone else’s genetic material by the patient’s body has sometimes resulted in dangerous side effects and even death. In autologous treatments the patient’s own stem cells are reintroduced into their own body. Because the person is receiving their own genetic material the risk is dramatically lower. While autologous treatments are considered a safer alternative, in some rare circumstances, serious unwanted side effects have occurred. In the United States it’s legal to harvest stem cells and reintroduce them back into the donor patient; however, it is illegal to culture, process and activate those same cells before injecting them back into the donor patient. Autologous Immune Enhancement Therapy (AIET) involves culturing the cells and because of this, it is illegal in the United States. Allogeneic therapies which don’t involve this process are legal. ILT: Why has research only now discovered stem cell nutrition as an alternative? CH: Research of adult stem cells has excelled in recent years, in part, because adult stem cells can now be derived directly from the donor patient and don’t require the destruction of human embryos like earlier research.

are effective and safe, even if they contain ingredients that individually are considered effective and safe. Most natural products on the market claiming to increase stem cell production have no supporting research on their particular ingredients and formula. One of the most common things I see are products that just don’t have enough of any one ingredient to be effective. In other cases, the product may actually be detrimental to us due to interactions among the ingredients. I explain in my book exactly what to look for in a good stem cell nutrition program.

As researchers have worked to identify what types of cells would work best in the body, much of the focus and excitement has been around primitive cells because of their ability to change into any kind of cell needed. As scientists focused their attention on primitive cells they discovered the importance of telomeres and their role in helping them properly duplicate. In my book I share a study of how a natural blend of herbs and adaptogens have been proven to help our body release more of the highly sought after primitive cells and that also showed the reproduced cells are more accurate and the copied cells are more accurately copied Although many researchers are moving forward with high impact stem cell nutrition programs, consumers still need to be informed. HERBS & THE S UMMER S EASON Herbalist Kathleen Gould, rH

aHg

From the beginning of time, people just like you and me, have been using herbs not only for healing a particular illness or imbalance but more importantly, for maintaining radiant health. Today it is about keeping your family hydrated and healthy all summer long with herbs. In days past, most families had their own backyard medicinal herb gardens and used these beautiful earth spirits for both these purposes. Herbs for the most part are pretty safe as long as we use them with a bit of knowledge, awareness and gratitude. Medicinal herbs are powerhouses of vitamins, minerals & other vital nutrients. Because many of these plants are Wild Weeds, they have long taproots and therefore pull up nutrients, minerals and trace minerals not found as often in our cultivated foods. Did you know that a teacup of a good quality whole plant herb tea has about 300 mg of calcium, magnesium and bone building minerals and because they are foods, we utilize these minerals more completely and efficiently? Simple, abundant plants like dandelion, nettle, oatstraw, raspberry, red clover and mints (to

name but a few), can be combined or used alone to provide our bodies with plethora of amazing nutrients, and all we need to do is drink the tea. We don’t need to be told how important it is to keep hydrated in our scalding desert heat, but in addition to losing water when we sweat, we also lose lots of minerals (that’s why our skin tastes salty). You often feel thirsty and it seems that no matter how much water you drink, you cannot seem to quench your thirst (this is especially important if you work outside). Well - remember that 300mg of calcium, magnesium & bone building minerals we just learned about? Now you know the big secret – All you need to do is drink lots of mineral rich herbal teas and you will stay hydrated and begin to feel your energy being restored, and these amazing herbs are healthful for the whole family. Herbs nourish and support every organ and system of our bodies and mixing and matching a variety of these nourishing herbs each day can help keep us in tip, top shape. Of course keeping a good attitude (getting out of our mind), healthy diet, positive thoughts, joy, laughter and perhaps a bit of – dare I say it – exercise, are also a big part of the health puzzle. Learning to make these simple herbal remedies right in our own kitchens is not only fun and easy but also very empowering and effective. Herb shops are popping up all over the country and are great resources for both good quality herbs and simple herb classes (not to mention, cool places to just hang out). Here is a simple mineral rich tea blend to get you started. Make a big pot of it and refrigerate it so you only need to make once or twice a week.

High Calcium Mineral Rich Tea Blend 2 oz Oatstraw 2 oz Nettle leaf 1 oz Comfrey leaf 1 oz Raspberry 1 oz Lemongrass 2 oz Peppermint or Spearmint ½ oz Horsetail (Shavegrass) ¼ oz Cinnamon Stevia to taste Mix all herbs together and store in glass jar. To make tea: Put herbs and water in big nonaluminum pot and cover tightly (one teaspoon herb blend for each cup of water). Bring to boil and remove from heat, but leave on stove overnight. In the morning strain off your tea, store in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Traditional dosage: Enjoy 1 quart or more per day. Btw ~ the used herbs from your teas make great, nutrient rich compost for the plants in your yard.

MCP ~ Proven Natural Galectin-3 Blocker

W

hether you’re looking for anti-cancer support, protection against inflammation and fibrosis, safe heavy metal chelation or just overall health support, a top recommendation is Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP). MCP directly attacks cancer and other chronic diseases by binding to and blocking galectin-3 molecules throughout the body. Galectin-3 is a “sticky” cell surface protein that promotes cancer growth and metastasis and is now implicated in other chronic illnesses including heart disease, inflammation and fibrosis. Modified Citrus Pectin is a proven natural galectin-3 blocker, making it an excellent adjunct for a wide range of conditions. As research continues, it’s clear that MCP is an important daily supplement for promoting and protecting overall health and longevity. Top Research Institutes Add to MCP’s Substantial Scientific Evidence Multiple published studies on Modified Citrus Pectin conducted at top research institutes have uncovered numerous health promoting benefits, including powerful immune activation and superior Galectin-3 inhibition. As MCP’s substantial body of scientific evidence continues to grow, there is ample proof that this unique nutraceutical is highly effective and safe for long-term use, particularly in the areas of cellular health. Proven Galectin-3 Blocker MCP is the only proven naturally derived Galectin-3 blocker. In addition to promoting cellular health, the inhibition of excess galectin-3 in the body is proving to be a critical component for cardiovascular health and other areas. Offers Daily Health and Disease Prevention To promote comprehensive cellular health, no one product can be considered a “magic bullet.” However, the remarkable efficacy and safety of MCP make it an essential component within the world of integrative therapies. As ongoing research further validates the many outstanding health benefits offered by this natural product, MCP is becoming one of the most important nutrients to take on a daily basis for health maintenance. One specific form of MCP continues to be the most effective and widely researched MCP available on the market, and the only one used in clinical trials. MCP Promotes Cellular Health I have used MCP successfully for over 20 years as an essential component of my integrative protocols to promote healthy cells in breasts, prostate, lungs, colon, liver, pancreas and other areas. While each of my patients receive highly individualized protocols specific to their unique needs, MCP always plays a leading role in all my cellular health-promoting programs. The powerful actions of MCP continues to be proven in ongoing peer-reviewed research and the findings are significant: MCP is a safe and highly effective therapy with the ability to support cellular health, immune function and longevity. MCP in the Removal of Heavy Metals and Toxins MCP has been clinically proven to safely and effectively remove heavy metals and environmental toxins from the tissues and blood stream, without removing essential minerals within the body, which is a common side effect of other chelation therapies. The ability of MCP to safely and effectively reduce total body burden of heavy metals without leeching essential minerals, has been clinically proven in peer reviewed clinical trials.

Five Surprising Health Benefits of

Cauliflower

By Michael Ravensthorpe

I

t’s a well-known fact that the more colorful a vegetable is, the healthier it’s likely to be. After all, color indicates the presence of carotenoids, which are the antioxidants that give most vegetables their greatest benefits. Consequently, many of us assume that blandlooking vegetables, such as regular white cauliflower, are lacking in the health department. Sadly, it is true that cauliflower lacks certain nutrients, such as chlorophyll, that are present in most other vegetables because their leaves shield them from the sun during growth. Despite this drawback, there is still a lot to love about cauliflowers. In fact, when cooked properly (e.g., boiled, steamed or sautéed), cauliflower contains higher concentrations of certain essential nutrients than many other whole foods.

Five health benefits of cauliflower

1. Rich in cancer-fighting phytochemicals – Cauliflower contains large quantities of sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which are two phytochemicals with proven cancerfighting properties. Sulfurophane is a sulfur compound, which, according to a study published in Carcinogenesis in December 2008, can decrease the rate of chemically induced mammary tumors in animals. (1) I3C has also been shown to prevent cancer by increasing the body’s production of enzymes that flush carcinogens and toxins out of the body before they can harm cells. I3C also contains anti-tumor agents and is a proven anti-inflammatory that could help treat painful conditions, such as arthritis, sprains and period pains. 2. Boosts kidney and cardiovascular health – A study published in the American Journal of Hypertension in February 2012 discovered that sulforaphane could also normalize kidney function and significantly reduce blood pressure. (2) The researchers attributed this benefit to sulfuraphane’s ability to improve DNA methylation, which is needed to maintain gene expression and cellular function. Given the scope of this benefit, eating more sulforaphane-rich foods, such as cauliflower, might contain many other health benefits not yet proven by science. 3. Digestive support – One cup of boiled cauliflower contains 12% of our recommended daily allowance (RDA) of fiber, which sweeps our digestive system of accumulated waste. It is also rich in the natural compound glucoraphanin, which appears to be found exclusively in broccoli and cauliflower. Glucoraphanin is actually the precursor to the aforementioned sulforaphane and contains numerous digestive benefits. In fact, a 2009 study featured in Cancer Prevention Research showed that glucoraphanin-sourced sulforaphane had a protective effect on the stomach lining and is especially effective at guarding us from the destructive bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which can increase our risk of stomach ulcers and cancer. 4. A good source of vitamin C – One cup of boiled cauliflower also contains almost 100% of our RDA of the West’s favorite nutrient: vitamin C. According to the World’s Healthiest Foods website, this amount is more vitamin C per weight than most other fruits and vegetables, including certain leafy green vegetables. (4) An essential antioxidant, vitamin C, helps protect us from the cell-destroying effects

of free radicals, while also helps us to produce collagen and manufacture certain neurotransmitters. Without it, we would literally fall apart. 5. High in brain-boosting choline – Like broccoli, cauliflower is a fantastic natural source of the B vitamin choline. Choline is a precursor to the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and an increased choline intake is regularly linked to improved cognitive function, particularly among fetuses. For example, a 2010 study published in NIH Research Matters showed that the fetuses of pregnant women who suffered from a choline deficiency experienced reduced blood vessel growth in the brain. (5) Another study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that pregnant rats fed choline supplements gave birth to pups that enjoyed lifelong memory enhancements.

T

Little Known Functions of the Lymphatic System & How to Improve Its Health

he lymphatic system is part of the body’s immune system and functions as the body’s “drainage” system. While it often doesn’t get as much attention as the cardiovascular system, it actually plays vital roles in maintaining good health and combating disease.

Parts of the lymphatic system

The lymphatic system comprises of:

• The lymph, which is the system’s transport fluid. • A vast network of capillaries which transport the lymph. • A number of lymph nodes located at different parts of the body which filter the lymph - these are mostly situated at the neck, armpits and groin. • The tonsils, thymus and spleen, which produce white blood cells (lymphocytes, T cells and B cells of the immune system) that go around destroying pathogens and toxins. The network of lymphatic capillaries parallels the blood vessels and practically resembles a “tree” in the human body.

Functions

Here are some key points regarding the functions of the lymphatic system: • Lymphatic vessels remove blood proteins and excess water from spaces surrounding bodily cells - this allows the cells to receive critical oxygen. A congested lymphatic system results in oxygen-deprived cells, which in the long-term can lead to various pains and diseases. • Lymph fills spaces between bodily cells, bringing nutrients to the cells as well as removing unwanted materials from them - these include dead cells, bacteria, heavy metals, fatty globules, and other waste products. • Bringing toxins away from cells is actually the lymphatic system’s main function. Lymph circulates through the lymphatic system, carrying waste materials away from various parts of the body. • The lymph nodes then filter the lymph, neutralizing and dumping bacteria and other pathogens, as well as neutralizing and getting rid of other toxins. They then bring these materials to the bloodstream, while the lymphocytes are allowed to pass through. • Thereafter, the unwanted toxins are brought through the blood to the kidneys and liver, organs of detoxification, where they are dealt with and then excreted from the body. Some of the lymph is also dumped straight into the large intestines, where it is excreted with the feces. Generally, lymph flows rather slowly, at a rate of about three quarts each day. Unlike the bloodstream, which has the heart for a pump, the lymphatic system doesn’t have such a mechanism and has to rely on other ways to keep the lymph moving. These include general bodily movement, muscle contractions, lymphatic massage and other types of compression, plus gravity. In times of illness, for example during colds, lymphatic system activity rises and the lymph nodes tend to become swollen with collected waste materials. Natural or alternative healthcare practitioners often pay attention to reactivating lymph flow as part of holistic treatment regimens. Keeping the lymphatic system functioning well and lymph flowing is also part of a vitality-enhancing and disease-preventing healthy lifestyle.

How to improve lymphatic circulation

Suggestions include:

• Deep breathing - studies have revealed that this is one of the best ways of activating the lymphatic system and keeping the lymph moving. • Exercise - vigorous exercise increases the rate of lymph flow. • Trampoline bouncing • Lymphatic massage • Osteopathic/chiropractic lymphatic drainage techniques • Dry skin brushing - a session of light and brisk brushing, done correctly, is roughly equivalent to 20-minutes of exercise in terms of encouraging healthy lymph flow • Reflexology/acupressure - press on and massage the relevant reflex points/ zones to send healing energy to the lymphatic system. Focus on the area around the center of the top of the foot, or the area behind the wrist. 10 ways to

Your

Cravings By Dan DeFigio

…you shouldn’t completely overhaul your routine & diet overnight.

It’s three o’clock on a Thursday afternoon. You’re sitting at your desk, stressing over a project your boss wants in two hours. But you’re not making much progress, because all you can think about is how badly you want a candy bar. You can practically taste the sweet, melty chocolate encasing just the right amount of salty peanuts and fluffy marshmallow filling. As you begin to salivate, you give up your internal struggle, dig some quarters out of your desk drawer, and head to the snack machine. You know you’ll never accomplish anything productive until your sugar craving is satisfied. If this scenario sounds all too familiar, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans crave and consume all sorts of sweets—in large quantities— every day. That’s not surprising; processed foods, sweetened beverages, engineered sweeteners, and refined grains are pervasive in the Western food supply. In fact, the average American consumes over 130 pounds of sugar each year! If that amount seems excessive, it is. Such large amounts of sugar can spark a myriad of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, chronic fatigue, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and much more. And to make matters worse, sugar acts on our brain’s pleasure center just like alcohol and is as addictive as cocaine. The more sugar we eat, the more we want.

and lack of sleep can all drive you to grab whatever sugar-laden junk food is handy. That’s why building good habits—specifically, good lifelong habits—is an essential task for staying off sugar. One of the first steps in decreasing your reliance on sugar, is making healthy changes in your nutritional, mental, and physical habits. For any major change to stick, it has to be sustainable. That’s why you shouldn’t completely overhaul your daily routine and diet overnight. Start with one small, doable change. Once you’re comfortable with it, move onto the next change. Using baby-steps method, it’s possible for anyone to wave goodbye to what was once an overwhelming sugar addiction. Here are ten healthy habits and lifestyle changes that can help minimize both the number and intensity of your sugar cravings: Eat small amounts of food EvEry thrEE to four hours. Low blood sugar can fire up cravings for high-sugar food. When blood sugar plummets, energy drops, and the brain has trouble focusing, making turning to sugar for a quick pick-me-up all too easy. Eating every three or four hours throughout the day helps keep blood sugar levels more even and holds sugar cravings at bay. With this strategy you also won’t be as hungry at night, so resisting late-night sweet fixes is easier. Every time you eat, try to combine a

To Drink Warm Water with Lemon & Honey in the Morning

We all have heard that drinking a glass of warm water with honey and lemon early in the morning is good for health. Some also believe it might help in weight loss as well. If you are one of those people who are skeptical of most things, here are 10 reasons why drinking warm water with lemon and honey is great for your health.

InCrEasEs your ChanCEs of WEIGht loss Apart from its properties of cleansing the stomach, lemon contains a type of fiber called pectin, that helps make you feel full and keeps cravings at bay. The warm water, honey and lemon also creates a more alkaline atmosphere in your stomach…thus helping you lose weight faster.

hElPs ImProvE dIGEstIon Lemon, honey and warm water combined help give your digestion an instant boost. Apart from the fact the components of lemon stimulate your liver to produce more bile, lemon also helps your digestive system by adding to the already present acid and assists it in flushing out unwanted toxins. Honey acts as an antibacterial and beats any infections that might be present in your body. It also helps in the production of intestinal mucus which aids in the flushing out of toxins from the body.

Can GIvE you ClEar sKIn The benefits of lemon on your skin are aplenty; however, apart from that, its cleansing action also helps in purifying your blood. It also aids in the production of new blood cells that acts as potent cleaning agents. The water and honey lend unique restorative, antibacterial and collagen boosting properties to your skin as well. So, if having naturally glowing skin is your aim, this drink is for you.

ClEansEs thE stomaCh, thus ImProvInG thE funCtIonInG of thE Colon In Ayurveda it is believed we tend to have a buildup of toxins or ‘ama’ in our stomach. This product of undigested food, intestinal cells and dead bacteria often coats the inner lining of our stomach and is thought to lead to diseases. By drinking lemon and honey in warm water the walls of the intestine – especially the colon – get stimulated; leading to the expulsion of this ama. If understanding Ayurveda is not your thing, allopathic describes it as a cleansing of the colon, which allows it to function much better. Thereby, helping your body absorb nutrients, get rid of toxins and stay hydrated. The build up of toxins often lead to the feeling of bloating. BEats ConstIPatIon This mixture is a great and almost instant remedy for constipation. It helps stimulate the bowels. It also aids in the production of intestinal mucus, hydrates the colon and infuses water into dried stool. All this together helps you pass motion easily. hElPs In ClEansInG thE lymPhatIC systEm According to various disciplines of medicine, a dehydrated lymphatic system is one of the leading causes of illness. Lack of water and essential fluids in the lymphatic system can make you feel sluggish and fatigued, lead to constipation, disturbed sleep, high or low blood pressure, stress and an all around lack in mental function. The benefit of drinking this mixture early in the morning is that it helps hydrate your entire lymphatic system that not only beats all the above symptoms but also improves your immunity. GIvEs you an Instant Boost of EnErGy and ImProvEs your mood Feeling low and tired? This mixture is for you. The honey present in the concoction acts as an instant energy booster – minus the calories. Water helps clear your mind by providing fresh blood to your brain, and lemon activates negatively charged enzymes in your stomach – a great way to combat positively charged enzymes that react with the food you eat adversely, leading to it being digested poorly. Moreover, the scent of lemon is known to be a natural relaxant and can help uplift your mood. ClEans your urInary traCt and aCts as a dIurEtIC Honey is a very potent antibacterial agent that has the capability to beat a number of common infections. When mixed with lemon and water, this concoction is the best way to cleanse your urinary tract. For women who suffer from frequent UTI (urinary tract infection), this juice is known to keep recurrent infections at bay. ImProvEs oral hEalth The acidic nature of lemon, combined with the innate properties of honey and water, can help beat bad breath almost instantly. The lemon cleanses the mouth, activating your salivary glands and killing offensive bacteria. When added to honey and water, it help wash down bacteria and degraded food that is usually present in your mouth and throat early in the morning. Another reason for bad breath is the formation of a white film on your tongue (mainly consisting of decaying food and bacteria), this juice effectively gets rid of that film making your breath fresh – naturally.

Tips To Make And Drink This Mixture Drink this concoction first thing in the morning without brushing or gargling. To make the mixture, take a tall glass of warm (not hot) water, add the juice of half a lemon and one tea spoon of honey. Mix well and drink quickly. Remember not to drink coffee or tea for at least one hour after drinking this mixture.

The key to overcoming stress eating (and reactive behavior in general) is to become very clear about what you really want. When you experience an emotional trigger, force yourself to do a quick reality check to determine what you really need. For example, if you feel stressed and overwhelmed, what you really want is peacefulness and personal power, not sugar. If you’re unhappy with the behavior of your spouse, what you probably need is to feel reassured and reconnected with him or her—sugar can’t give you that. Once you have identified what you really need when you feel stressed, you’ll be in a much better position to make a conscious—not reactive—decision. 10 Reasons Wheatgrass should Be added To You ouR R die ieTT

By Debjani Arora Hippocrates, the father of modern medical science and the great Greek philosopher, once said – ‘Let thy food be thy medicine.’ The reason being, the body has an inbuilt ability to heal itself given the right nutrition, proper environment and adequate exercise. But the modern day mortals seem to have ignored this dictum entirely. If we look deep most of our lifestyle related disorders and ailments stems from our sedentary lifestyle and wrong eating habits. Though it’s not easy to change much of our lifestyles, incorporating small changes can go a long way to help us be in the pink of health. If you are wondering where to start try this – Wheatgrass. What is Wheatgrass? Wheatgrass is a kind of grass which has therapeutic and healing properties. Like most plants it contains chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins and enzymes. Proponents of wheatgrass claim this grass to have unique curative properties and provide supplemental nutrition to the diet. Wheatgrass belongs to the wheat family but has no wheat gluten in it. It is usually found in the form of grass, juice or even wheatgrass powder. how it helps Wheatgrass contains chemicals that are thought to have antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. It also helps to kill bacterial infections in the body. Wheatgrass is supposed to have a lot of health benefits, some are as follows: •

Helps to control blood pressure: Regular intake of wheatgrass increases red blood cell count in the blood. It also cleans the blood, other organs and the gastrointestinal tract of debris. It dilates the blood pathways hence reducing blood pressure.

Helps to combat obesity: It stimulates the thyroid gland and hence helps to deal with obesity, indigestion and a host of other complaints of the endocrine system.

Helps in detoxification: Wheatgrass juice acts as a detoxifier, protects the liver and also aids blood purification. It restores the alkalinity of the blood and can effectively be used for treating peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhea and other problems of the gastrointestinal tract. It also helps to relieve symptoms of constipation.

Helps build immunity: The enzymes and amino acids found in wheatgrass can protect from carcinogens like no other food or medicine. It strengthens the cells in the body, detoxifies the liver and chemically neutralizes the environmental pollutants found in the blood.

Helps fight various diseases: Though there isn’t much scientific evidence, there are unpublished studies that show wheatgrass juice can fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs. Also aids in the treatment of cancer, arthritis, insomnia, asthma, menstrual problems etc.

Helps in skin rejuvenation: A paste of wheatgrass powder made with milk and a pinch of turmeric when applied on face can act as a powerful face pack to deal with troubles of acne, white and black heads, skin tan, burn etc.

Helps in weight management: Surprisingly wheatgrass can help in both weight loss and weight gain when used with a proper diet plan.

Can be used as an antiseptic: Wheatgrass has certain healing properties. It works wonders for cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. Make a paste and apply it. Replace every two to four hours for best results.

‘Let your food be thy medicine’

Hippocrates

Helps improve reproductive health: Continuous use of wheatgrass helps in increasing vigor, vitality and helps conceive.

how To use it? You can either make a juice out of the raw wheatgrass plant or opt to use wheatgrass powder. If you use wheatgrass powder, add one spoonful of the powder in a glass of water stir well and have it every day. To ensure better result also follow a healthy diet consisting of green veggies, salads, soups, rice, sprouts, rotis, fruits and dry fruits. Avoid intake of bakery products, fried foods, spicy foods, non-vegetarian stuff, alcohol, tobacco etc. Where Do you get Wheatgrass? If you have space and want to nurture a hobby of gardening you can grow wheat grass in your backyard too. It takes only seven days for the seeds to germinate and grow to an extent ready to be consumed. Otherwise you can buy wheatgrass powder from a reputed naturopathy retailer or ayurvedic shop. Before you pick the product learn to read the label correctly to ensure you do not end up with a fake one. Check if the package says ‘organic’, if it is sealed and airtight. Many wheatgrass suppliers might grow the grass indoors where the amount of sunlight received is limited. Read on the label to find if the grass was grown organically in the farm. If it doesn’t meet these criteria you should probably give it a miss and check for a genuine one. Does it have Any side effects? Not enough is known about the safety and long term use of wheatgrass. Though it is observed that wheatgrass can cause nausea, appetite loss or even constipation in some people. It’s advisable for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to stay off its consumption unless advised by the practitioner.

Patches & Prisons of the Heart When we were children, life handed us each a balloon. “Choose one” life said. I picked a blue one. Blue like the sky, the ocean; and I added a touch of pink like the sunset.

healed once open wounds…and all that is left is a small scar. But I treasure my scars, and I expose them proudly for they prove that I have taken chances; but more importantly, I have recovered from my falls…

“Choose one” life said. You chose your favorite color - black. Because we were not yet capable, life generously filled our balloons with helium. Together we soared through life’s skies. Fascinated, we watched the clouds gather, felt the coolness of the rain. Then the thunder and lightning started. We panicked. But when my fear subsided, I knew that I would stay, take my chances. You, on the other hand, found a crystal clear bottle and sealed yourself away. No one will be the wiser you thought.

One day I looked for you. For a moment I was filled with envy. While I was patching my balloon, yours was safe, secure. But then I noticed that the crystal clear glass of your childhood had faded. The wind, rain and summer sun had stained and marred the only view you had to the world.

So while I floated through life’s skies and felt the chill of winter and the warmth of summer, you stayed in a constant mediocrity…

Carefully, I cleared a place on your bottle and tried to reach you. But you alone could let me in. You wouldn’t; or perhaps you couldn’t. This effort added yet another patch to my balloon. But as always, I colored it brightly - this time inscribing your name. Before I left to again travel life’s skies, I scratched my name on your bottle. As much as it hurt, I had to return to the wind, rain and blue - black air….

Then one day it happened, my balloon was popped. I fell swiftly to the ground. “Look,” you said, “I am safe and you have foolishly been beaten.” You must have been amazed when I patched my balloon with brightly colored thread and filled it with a potent helium from within.

Perhaps some day, if you free yourself, you will drift to my unpredictable skies. I will gladly meet you half way. I realize you don’t have the power to fly to my heights, but I could teach you. If you free yourself, I will gladly meet you half way…

This time I was a little bigger, a little stronger and I soared a little higher…Were you jealous?

But for now, I can only wonder how the world looks through a scratched and rain-stained prison…

Through the years, my balloon has been bruised, torn, punctured. Always I deflate. Always I fall to the ground. Always I patch myself. Sometimes I remove old patches to find that they have

Tell me my love - where are your patches? your scars? And what will you do when the misty glass turns black and your bottle is sealed…forever?

Awakened Oracle Astrology

Self-care is the watch word for July. So far, 2014 has been an inner revolution. We have both identified what we want to manifest in our lives, and also what needs to be released to make room for that new manifestation. Not all of this was a pleasant experience; however, in many ways, this process has felt like a “birth”. Last year, I felt we were all pregnant with a vision of the New World we wanted to live in. And then, early this year, it was finally “time”, and the joyous and possibly painful “birthing” process started. Staying with that metaphor, I would say we hit transition in June and now comes the Push! I feel that after the Solstice, and through July, we will feel the natural desire to focus, breathe and push. Cancer, our dominate sign this month, is our perfect aid. Cancer reminds us that the ease of our delivery is dependent on the safety and self-care we embrace. The Moon reminds us to work with the natural cycles of growth so that we are neither fighting nor resisting the river’s current. Astrology uses the placement of all planets at the moment of your birth to determine the “Matrix” of energy you are working through this lifetime. The sign determines the process of connecting with that aspect of you. For instance, the Sun may be in Scorpio at birth, but Libra does not define “Who you Are”, it determines the process by which you will connect with “Who you Are”. Energy for July 2014 Strength: Our strength is found in Magic. We can trust the synchronicities and rely on the unexplained this month. Believe that magic can happen. Challenge: Our challenge is Alternate Realities. It is time to let go of all the density in our lives and open up to the many dimensions around us. Totem Energy: Our totem is Horse. Asking for help and responding to the needs of others is our gift this month. Help is available. All we need to do is ask. Energetic Theme: Our theme is Release. Every step on our path is a gift and everyone on our path is a teacher. Focus on the gifts of whatever is being released. Moon Cycles Full Buck Moon: July 12, 4:24 am PDT - 20° Capricorn. Full Moon Message: No man is an island. Partnerships are the key to success. New Moon: July 26, 3:41 pm PDT- 3° Leo. New Moon Message: Explore and expand your personal desires.

ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19

Totem: Dragonfly (Magic, Illusion). Magic is afoot in your life. The root of magic is perception. A coincidence could be meaningless or it could be the work of your Higher Self; sending you a message that Magic is creating something wonderful in your life. To dance with Magic, we must dance with Illusions. Dragonfly is here to tell you to believe. The difference between Magic and Illusion is belief. Do you believe?

TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20

Totem: Eagle (Vision, Fearlessness). Your ability to focus on the practical has made you a stabilizing force in recent months. Eagle has come to aid you in raising your focus to a higher plane. Nobel ideas, enduring values and a sustainable vision of the future are your natural instincts. Return to the long view. You can trust yourself to remain sure footed while your eyes are on the horizon and no longer on the ground.

GEMINI • May 21 to June 20

Totem: Butterfly (Beauty, Transformation). Butterfly is a perfect totem for Gemini. You are capable of incredible acts of transformation and just as capable of flitting from field to flower without allowing anything to change you. Where are you on your path of transformation? Are you ready for change, or has the next new thing caused you to lose focus? Time to slow down and let your otter experiences settle into your inner consciousness.

CANCER ~ June 21 to July 22

Totem: Spider (Patience, Creativity). Jupiter is finishing its transit through your sign establishing a new 12 year cycle in your life. Spider indicates that this expansive phase has taught you to weave your life with beauty, grace and precision. You now have a heightened sense of your own needs and may now be able to act on them quickly enough to startle those around you. Be patient and let other catch up with your changes.

LEO ~ July 23 to Aug. 22

Totem: Owl (Wisdom, Insight). The Dark Moon Lilith has been slowly creeping through your sign for a few months heightening your fear of change. Owl is supporting you while you make this trip though the dark. Normally Leo, you love the sunshine. The dark is not your favorite place to be. Insight into your fears and subconscious will be very valuable next month as Jupiter brings you expansion. Trust the insight you have gained.

VIRGO ~ Aug. 23 to Sept 22

Totem: Lynx (Independence, Adaptability). Lynx brings you gifts this month. They may be actual material gifts or it might be the revelation of previously unrecognized talents. Lynx is also asking you to reassert your independence. Virgo is the sign of service; however, you are reminded to serve only that which serves you back. Do not be entrapped by situations that prevent your natural growth or the exploration of your new found gifts and talents.

Introducing Cancer June 21st to July 22nd “I FEEL”

Ruling Planet: Moon ~ Rules: Breasts & Stomach ~ Symbol: The Crab ~ Element: Water ~ Energy: Feminine ~ quality: Cardinal ~ Gem: Opal & Ruby ~ Flowers: Acanthus ~ Color: White ~ Most Compatible Signs: Capricorn, Scorpio & Pisces ~ Higher Octave of Cancer Energy: We are intuitively connected to our inner landscape and create the perfect structures to maintain and explore that inner focus. ~ Lower Octave of Cancer Energy: We may be heavily influenced by our inner world without feeling the responsibility and empowerment to create the safety we need. ~ Full Spectrum of the Cancer/Capricorn Axis: The Full Spectrum of the Cancer/Capricorn Axis: We value the flow of our emotions and maintain respect for nurturance as well as holding an inner authority born of facing our fears and coming to terms with the natural limitations in our lives.

C

ancer is ruled by the Moon. We embrace our inner landscape; our emotions, self-care, needs and intuition. Here we claim what we need; not only to survive, but to thrive. Cancer sun signs are here to nurture others and help them understand the value and requirements of their inner life. Cancer also connects us to our family, home, ancestors and lineage. Tenderness, love, sensitivity, nurturance, emotional bonding are all the beautiful qualities of Cancer. She is a champion for the young, the elderly, and the disadvantaged. Anyone who is not able to withstand the larger forces of Life will be sheltered by Cancer so they can grow or heal. However, Cancer is the Crab, and in that image we see the need to “carry your home on your back”. As a champion the need for environments that promote growth and healing, it must take the responsibility to create them. Without its shell, our Crab is constantly exposed. Wherever we have Cancer in our charts, we have the responsibility to establish the safety we need.

LIBRA ~ Sept. 23 to Oct. 22

Totem: Turtle (Stability, Realism). Turtle brings a deep connection to the Earth and to our physical bodies. Mars, the sign of action and physical boundaries has been transiting through your sign and urging you to improve your health, boundaries and ability to take action. Turtle connects you to the Source of strength for; Mother Earth. Connect with abundance as a birth right, and draw strength from the ground whenever you feel spaced out.

SCORPIO ~ Oct. 23 to Nov. 21

Totem: Hawk (Foresight, Omens). Saturn has been in a two year transit of your sign forcing you to accept what you cannot change. You love to have what is hidden within you remain so. The Hawk totem indicates that you will need to open up a bit this month so you can receive some vital information from others. Accept yourself and do not fear exposure. You will be grateful that you took the risk.

SAGITTARIUS ~ Nov. 22 to Dec. 21

Totem: Stag (Pride, Leadership). Stag is a very beneficent omen. This month will be a refreshing change from the past few months. Express your healthy pride and take full credit for your own accomplishments. Share that vision you have been so passionate about and set the bar higher for those around you. You are not here to hide your light under a bushel. Shine, share, empower and expand in every area of your life.

CAPRICORN ~ Dec. 22 to Jan. 19

Totem: Otter (Playfulness, Trust). Otter is your opportunity to balance both sides of your nature; both masculine and feminine. Drive and responsibility come easily to you. Play and trust may not. Relax and consider this month an adjustment period. As you know, balance is vital in any lasting structure. And a balance of work and play, rest and activity is needed. This is the month to stop the productivity and “sharpen the saw”.

AqUARIUS ~ Jan. 20 to Feb. 18

Totem: Hummingbird (Joy, Music). Hummingbird heralds the return of your joy and “light”-heartedness. Light is the nature of your sign. As the highest expression of the mental realm, you naturally see the future. At times, you may feel you are alone in your vision; however, it can be hard to be a head of your time. This month you return as a beacon in the dark…a much more joyful expression of your true nature.

PISCES ~ Feb. 19 to March 20

Totem: Buffalo (Protection, Generosity). Buffalo is one of the most powerful totems in the Native American tradition. He holds the place of wisdom in the north. As a totem, Buffalo brings healing and abundance and also brings protection. Pisces, you are naturally compassionate. Give generously this month, as you will receive generously from others. However, do not let yourself be stampeded. You will also need the strength of this totem to share your wisdom.
