It’s amazing that we are about to close out January, 2013. It seems like only yesterday we began a new year. As I sit here, contemplating this months message, I recall reading a book 20 years ago by Richard Bach’s, “One”. At the time I found myself totally lost as he explained that we live simultaneously our past, present and future. Of course, my response was, “you must be crazy, I don’t understand”. Well, I put the book aside and since that time, there has been progress in my evolution. Down through the years I have heard that time is speeding up; or simply time is a creation of humanity. Now, if you are like the rest of those on the planet, you know time is our illusion of reality. So how does one go about rectifying that time is only in our minds and we are experiencing our past, presence and future all as one movement? How do we wrap our thoughts around the “no time” theory after all these eons of having created a different scenario as we know it? As I pose these questions a daring thought did cross my consciousness. Just perhaps, by some slight of the imagination, we could stop watching the clocks and watches and begin tapping into our inner guidance (intuition/gut feelings) and truly be in the Now. What a concept…one that will not be as easy as we might think. Now, a challenge. Try to not look at any timepiece for, let’s say, an hour. Then, when comfortable with listening to your inner strength (guide) go to the next step and make it for two hours. By doing this, we are stepping out of our safety zone and stretching the boundaries of our time perception. It also gives us the opportunity to learn the lesson of trust in our true essence… that of Spirit. As we step into the Now, the thoughts we think become the future while the thoughts we just had to create our future has now become the past. I hope I got that right, and then there is the realization that when we are courageous enough to stop the time machine, we will find ourselves less controlled by our illusions of space and time.

Feb. gemstone

Amethyst is one of the most popular of the semi-precious stones. It occurs in colors ranging from pale lilac to deep reddish purple. Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. Amethyst has healing properties and is powerful when set in jewelry, placed under your mattress or carried in you bra, pocket or purse. Power Stone It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

Protection Stone Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It has been worn as protection from self-deception, as well as a protection against witchcraft. The amethyst has long been used to open the spiritual and psychic centers, making it one of the power stones. It is also used as a meditation aid when worn as a necklace. Wisdom Stone The amethyst is known as the Bishop’s Stone and is still worn by Catholic Bishops. The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility,

sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It is thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius. Healing Properties of Amethyst Amethyst is a gemstone often worn by healers, as it has the power to focus energy. A healer will usually wear several pieces of jewelry with amethysts set in silver, especially an amethyst necklace. The person to be healed will have an Amethyst to hold while the healing is being done. The healer will place another piece of Amethyst on the area of the body in need of healing, the heart or lungs usually. Amethyst is used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive. Amethyst clusters, points or several tumbled Amethysts placed in a window that receives sun most of the day are very beneficial to use in healing and to heal negativity in the home. Place Amethyst clusters, points or several tumbled Amethysts in moonlight and everyone in the home will be feeling calmer. Using an Amethyst as a meditation focus will increase the positive spiritual feelings. Amethyst helps overcome fears and cravings. It also helps relieve headaches. Its color is as unique as it is seductive, though in fact this gemstone of all

For many thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been a jewel coveted by princes both ecclesiastical and secular. Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God in the official robes of the High Priest of the Jews, and the Russian Empress Catherine the Great sent thousands of miners into the Urals to look for it. In popular belief, the amethyst offers protection against drunkenness - for the Greek word ‘amethystos’ means ‘not intoxicated’ in translation. powers are attributed to the amethyst in all sorts of cultures. It was said to protect crops against tempests and locusts, bring good fortune in war and in the hunt, drive out evil spirits and inspire the intellect. The Amethyst is also known to cure a person of addictions, both alcoholic and drug. All in all, this stone is extremely powerful and beautiful as jewelry or a decorator item. A Tale of Two Fathers

My coaching client Gregg told me that he was trying to figure out his identity as a husband and father. “I grew up with two fathers,” Gregg explained. “One was my biological father, and the other the man my mother married after she divorced my father for cheating on her. My first father was a real player, a high-roller,” Gregg went on. “He loved to make money and spend it. He was generous with me and everyone. When I saw him after the divorce, he always had a new car and a different girlfriend. He seemed to be having fun, but I never saw him have a real relationship. “My second father was the exact opposite: He was ultra-conservative, serious, and stingy, but stable. He was a solid guy, but didn’t seem to be enjoying life. “Now that I have my own wife and family,” Gregg confessed, “I struggle between these two images. I’m not sure which man I want to be more like.” I told Gregg, “You are very blessed to have these two fathers to learn from. You had a soul contract to learn from both of them. Each had traits you liked, and traits you disliked. You don’t have to be like one or the other. You can choose your first father’s playfulness and generosity without cheating on your wife, and you can choose your second father’s stability without being stingy.” With that suggestion Gregg experienced a huge “aha!” He discovered that he can “take the best and leave the rest.” My mentor Hilda Charlton taught, “Everyone teaches you something. Some teach you what to do, and others teach you what not to do.” It is rare that we meet someone who models all of what we want or all of what we don’t want. We human beings are gloriously complex and embody a wide spectrum of traits for better and worse. It would be naïve and simplistic to want to be all of what someone is or all of what they are not. A mature person discerns traits within a person and appreciates what is valuable and what is not. During one class Hilda guided the students on a unique exercise. “I want each of you to stand and tell what ethnic group you have descended from. Then say, ‘I choose to take the positive trait of ___________ from my heritage, and I choose not to take the negative trait of _____________ from my heritage.’” Because the class took place in New York, students from many different cultures spoke. Chinese, Jewish, Italian, Irish, AfricanAmerican, and many others identified the best and worst traits of their culture, and took a stand for what was helpful and what was not. That class was a real eye-opener for me. Although it took place many years ago, I remember it clearly to this day.

use mature discernment to make healthy decisions. Dr. Barry Vissell and his wife Joyce ( are gifted teachers of relationship. In a recent magazine article, they offered this quiz: “It’s time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates. Who would you choose? “Candidate A associates with crooked politicians and has two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day. Candidate B was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college, and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening. Candidate C is a vegetarian, doesn’t smoke, drinks an occasional beer, and never cheated on his wife. Which of these candidates would be your choice? “Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt. Candidate B is Winston Churchill. Candidate C is Adolph Hitler. “Obviously, some important details were left out of the candidates’ resumes, but this example shows how important it is to look deeper before you judge.” All good people do some bad things; all bad people do some good things. Each of us must learn from the example that others show us, especially from the fruits of their actions. In a sense, we all have two fathers. We have role models of people who inspire us to follow their model, and others who inspire us to head in the opposite direction. Let us be grateful to them all, for they all serve a purpose. To identify any person or event as all good or all bad is a form of nearsighted vision. (Stephen Wright said, “A conclusion is where you got tired of thinking.”) There is a little bit of good in things that seem very bad, and there is a little bit of bad in things that seem very good. Your experience depends on what you choose to focus on. The ancient yin-yang symbol depicts a little white spot in the black sector and a little black spot in the white sector. EnlightEning ViEws There are Two Rules for Feng Shui in Your Kitchen. If it feels good, it’s good Feng Shui. If it feels bad, it’s bad Feng Shui

Feng Shui

A Little About Feng Shui The Chinese word “Feng Shui” refers to an ancient art developed over 3,000 years ago in China; however, in ancient cultures throughout the world, there were various forms of this mystical art form. This system teaches how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune of those within. “Feng” means wind and “Shui” means water. In Chinese culture, gentle winds and clear waters are associated with good health, thus good Feng Shui came to mean “good fortune,” as good health is the greatest fortune one can hope to achieve. Feng Shui is based on the idea that the land is alive and filled with “Chi,” or energy and the principle that we can harness that energy. In Feng Shui, the kitchen is considered one of the most important rooms in a home, as it is the place where the food that nourishes and sustains us is prepared. The kitchen represents the true heart of the home. It’s believed that when the Feng Shui of the kitchen is in balance, good health, prosperity and abundance will follow. Here are a few simple Feng Shui “rules” that can help elevate this life-force energy in your home. So how do you know if you have good Feng Shui in your kitchen? Remember, if it feels good, it’s most likely good Feng Shui…and if it feels bad, it’s probably bad Feng Shui. If your kitchen feels great to you every time you enter it, and your health is great, abundance is flowing (in Feng Shui, the kitchen has a direct relationship with one’s prosperity), then you have good Feng Shui. Don’t change a thing. However, if it doesn’t feel fantastic every time you step into your kitchen (or if you’re having financial or health challenges), then you might consider making some Feng Shui changes. Some suggestions are common sense, some come from traditional Feng Shui cures, and some are under the category of superstition, so look at any Feng Shui suggestions with discernment. Feel free to experiment. If a change seems unconventional, you might consider trying it for a while, and if things improve, keep the change; and if they don’t improve, disregard it. Energy Up ~ Energy Down Every object in your home will bring your energy up, take it down, or be neutral, even if you are not aware of it on a conscious level. You can use the exercise below to explore how each item, and area, within your kitchen makes you feel. The Energy Up/Energy Down exercise is a powerful one that can be employed in every aspect of your life, not just within this exercise. First method: Close your eyes, relax, and imagine yourself walking around your kitchen. Visualize yourself picking up a variety of items. Notice where your energy seems to go up, and where it goes down. Do some items make you smile and others give you a sinking sensation? This is the answer to what stays and what is gotten rid of in the kitchen and throughout your home and even your life. Second method: Actually walk around your kitchen, staying in touch with your intuition and how your body is reacting. Notice where you feel happy and up…and where you do not! This is an excellent tool to use in de-cluttering or rearranging your kitchen. The Kitchen As Heart of the Home The preparation of food is an act of the soul, it connects us to the great cycle of life and reminds us we are dependent upon the abundance of Earth to survive and thrive. Within the kitchen this relationship is ritualized throughout the day, every day, as meals are prepared, shared and consumed. This room also PAGE 8 • February, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

symbolizes health, abundance and financial resources because it is where you connect with what sustains and keeps you alive. In earlier times the kitchen was the center of the home as the family gathered around the stove to keep warm and talk while food was being prepared. Even today people will often spontaneously migrate towards the kitchen while at a party or gathering. Perhaps this is because the atmosphere of a warm, inviting kitchen subconsciously recaptures a nurturing communal feeling. The ideal kitchen, from any standpoint…not just in regard to Feng Shui—is clean, light, airy, and full of free-flowing energy. There should be excellent lighting (halogen or incandescent lighting, rather than florescent, is recommended) and, preferably, plenty of natural sunlight. If possible, have lighting on levels, such as under-counter lighting for local areas, task lighting, and overhead lighting. Fluorescent lighting is not ideal, as it may cause eyestrain, headaches and stress to the energy fields of the body. If you must use fluorescent lighting, invest in full-spectrum bulbs. Kitchen Colors Feng Shui is based on the idea that the land Cheerful, vibrant is alive and filled with “Chi” or energy and colors are best for the principle that we can harness that energy. the kitchen, as they ……… convey a sense of health, happiness It’s believed that when the Feng Shui of the and vitality. The kitchen is in balance, good health, prosperity best Feng Shui & abundance will follow. colors for a kitchen depend on the tastes, goals, and desires of the people in a house. Although some Feng Shui systems recommend particular colors for the kitchen, pick the color that makes you feel good and is a good backdrop for the meals you prepare. Of course, if you are unsure about what color to use, white can provide a perfect backdrop for other color accents to work with your particular kitchen. White allows the food and your accessories to shine and come to the forefront. Add splashes of color with decorative bowls filled with ripe fruit or colorful vegetables. A white ceramic container filled with your colorful cooking tools will catch the eye and add more color and zest. Living things are another excellent manner in which to increase energy flow. Fill vases with fresh flowers and lush greenery. Grow your own herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, basil, lavender or whatever you love in your choice of pots on your windowsill. Pots of fresh herbs growing by the window, ropes of dried chili peppers, onions and garlic, bunches of dried herbs and flowers are excellent to have in the kitchen. Not only are they beautiful to look at and useful, they also celebrate the abundance of the Earth and ground and connect you to the source. Kitchen Workflow Set up your kitchen in a way that’s comfortable for you to work in and allows for easy workflow and energy movement. Make sure the items you use most are accessible and items you rarely use are stored in shelves or cupboards. Have a stepstool handy if you need access to items stored out of reach. This is all good Feng Shui. Kitchen Clutter Surfaces should be clean and free of clutter to allow for ease and efficiency in preparing meals. Every object you use to prepare meals should be visually pleasing, in good Continued On Page 24 *

What exactly is love?

Metaphysician Charles Fillmore describes love as “the pure essence of Being that binds together the whole human family.” French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin calls love “the fundamental impulse of life…Love alone can unite living beings so as to complete and fulfill them…for it alone joins them by what is deepest in themselves.” And, “Love is a divine energy that attracts and harmonizes everything in the universe.”

I hear people talking about our entering the fourth dimension, a raising of the Earth’s vibration, and other demonstrations of a higher consciousness, yet our world still has the appearance of discord and distrust. I’m writing this as people are still asking why 20 children were killed in Connecticut, why a woman in India was gang raped and died, and why our elected representatives in Washington seem to be so hostile to each other that they appear to have forgotten their higher purpose. Back in December, I had already decided that my February article would be about love. Yet, with all that has been occurring, one might easily wonder, “Where’s the love?” and “How could I possibly be expected to love the people doing harm?” Those questions told me it was exactly the right time to focus on love, because it is in these circumstances we must love the most.

What exactly is love? Metaphysician Charles Fillmore describes love as “the pure essence of Being that binds together the whole human family.” French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin calls love “the fundamental impulse of life…. Love alone can unite living beings so as to complete and fulfill them…for it alone joins them by what is deepest in themselves.” And, “Love is a divine energy that attracts and harmonizes everything in the universe.” This takes us out of the “You made me love you,” flowers and candy, and Romeo and Juliet romantic kind of love. De Chardin saw love as essential for us to evolve into greater complexity and higher consciousness. He “saw love as a powerful creative force that is the very foundation of the universe itself.” Fillmore and de Chardin’s definitions call us to a higher plain than the ego-based, feeling kind of love so prevalent in our culture. And I’m not knocking the feeling nature of love. It can be beautiful and fulfilling. It can also be an attempt to fill an emptiness we might be feeling inside ourselves. Many people believe love is purely emotional, and you can’t help who you do or do not love. But according to author Scott Peck, love is a choice. It is an act of will—namely, both an intention and an action. We choose to love. I agree. I believe we can also choose our feelings and how we respond to every situation and person that presents in our lives.

to a center of love and began blessing and shining love on all people involved. They chose love. And we can choose love—love those who act in ways we deem inappropriate in our daily lives, love terrorists, love people of other religions, love people who look different than we do, and love any one and anything that feel threatening. As we continue to choose love, we will eventually reach the consciousness that love is no longer a choice but instead is the essence of who we are and flows through us as naturally as breathing. The Beatles were right when they sang, All You Need Is Love. With love, anything and everything is possible. Studies show that through love and forgiveness, great and miraculous healing can occur in body, mind, and spirit. This concept applies equally to us as individuals and collectively to us in our communities, our nation, and the world. And as Fillmore and de Chardin taught, love is the essence that binds us together, that unites, completes, and fulfills us and attracts and harmonizes everything in the universe. In 2013, let us all do our part to harmonize our world and, more than that, the universe. Let us make our lives all about love. Are you willing let go of your emotion-based attachment to fear and anger? Are you willing to love yourself so that you can better love others? Are you willing to choose, in each moment, to center your thoughts, words, and actions in love? I think it’s worth the effort, don’t you? Please join me in creating a better world.

Some emotions are rooted in our reptilian brain centers—our flight or fight, our fear or anger. These were born out of our primitive survival needs in the physical world. But once we see these emotions coming to the surface, we can make choices in how we respond. Sometimes flight or fight is appropriate. However, as our consciousness rises, we have other, more powerful choices, which brings us back to love. Being at and acting from a higher vibration of love (as Fillmore and de Chardin describe it) can transform any situation. I’ve read stories of people being physically threatened who, although feeling afraid, draw upon a deeper wisdom and choose to act from love. And in that shift, their attackers withdraw. I know of contentious legal and business situations that were settled peacefully to everyone’s satisfaction when one of the parties made the decision to shift IN LIGHT TIMES • February, 2013 • PAGE 9

Wisdom from Wayne

Trade Blame

“How May I Serve”? Asking this question can turn your life around. Thinking of others first— reaching out to them despite how it might inconvenience you—causes you to feel joy. This gift of feeling good (or feeling God) within comes from serving and surrendering rather than asking and demanding. There’s no room for blame in your life as long as you live with kindness. Blaming your past. Blaming the economy. Blaming your perceived personal flaws. Blaming God. Blaming your parents. Blaming your children or your spouse. Blaming your DNA. There’s no shortage of circumstances, people, and events to blame—and there’s no shortage of blame itself.

human being, you move into a higher way of being. It takes your thoughts off yourself and ‘What’s in it for me’? and puts them on ‘How may I serve’? which is precisely how the universal mind we call the Tao or God is always operating. When you’re aligned with a compassionate outlook, your entire day will reflect this kind of awareness. If you believe as Martin Luther King, Jr. did, that our culture needs restructuring and that compassion is the way, I urge you to work toward electing people to public office—at all levels—who relate sensitivity and kindness in their messages to the public. Look for the compassionate heart, rather than the one that excludes, punishes, seeks revenge, or manipulates with government power. The more our institutions reflect this humane attitude, the fewer collective excuses we will call upon to explain why we haven’t been able to create the heaven on Earth that is our true calling.

Lift your spirit and align your heart with service.

When you shift to compassion, all blame disappears. So no matter what you may want for yourself, discover how you can want it more for someone else, and then make that shift. In that contemplative moment, compassion will eradicate finger-pointing. And you’ll begin to think like God thinks: serving, offering, giving, and loving freely. I’ve certainly found that when I remember to nurture kindness and courtesy, everything in my life seems to move toward more harmony and peace, to say nothing of how much better I feel when I’m giving rather than wanting. I heard the Dalai Lama speak on compassion some years back, and the essence of his message contained these two points: 1. Compassion is the single most important quality that humanity needs to learn. This is the way to find happiness and health and feel successful.

As I’ve frequently stated, the active repetition of an inner mantra reinforces and creates exactly what you’re saying to yourself. Therefore, repeat the following to yourself for at least five minutes: “I am a being of compassion. I extend love outward everywhere because this is my nature”. Affirm this to yourself continually, and post it in a prominent place in your home, office, or even your car. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us the ultimate words of compassion. If our world today would put them into practice, we’d all be living in peace. But even if the rest of the world hasn’t yet caught on, you can. I urge you to put these words to work in your life today; if you do, all excuses will most certainly vanish:

2. War and violence would become extinct in one generation if, beginning at the age of five, children were taught to meditate on compassion for an hour a week for the rest of their lives. Such is the power of a compassionate approach to life, which is truly thinking of others and living by the ancient Golden Rule.

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you”. (Matthew 5:43-44) This is compassion in action!

The very second you feel yourself retreating to blaming and making excuses, repeat the mantra, “How may I serve”? Then act upon the answers you receive. You’ll become aligned with the universal mind, which is always giving, and the bonus is that you’ll notice the universe asking you back, “How may I serve you”? As your compassion for others flows back to you, remember the truth I’ve written about many times: You do not attract what you want; you attract what you are. So make compassion be what you are.

Suggestions for Living from Compassion

Upon awakening, let the words “Thank you” flow from your lips, for this will remind you to begin your day with gratitude and compassion. The Healing Influence of Your Intentions

Recent findings in molecular biology show that your own intentions directly affect your health by their powerful influence on your metabolism.

o how can you use this knowledge to your advantage? The first step is to recognize your desire for change. Your mind and body will recognize whether or not you are ready and willing to make changes. If you truly are ready, your cells will interpret your intentions to heal as genuine. If your intentions are not sincere, they will be viewed and dismissed by your body as background noise.

rebuilding, repairing, and thereby recreating itself. A thought is translated in your brain and your body reacts to that thought. What you think is what you get.

Ask yourself, “What do I want?” If your answer is that you want to be healthy, say it aloud. Shout, “I want to be healthy!” Let it resonate within you that this is your intention. This is what you expect.

Understand how your environment influences you. Become proactive in how you interpret events, as how you are influenced is up to you. Your perception of this influence is ultimately what affects you, rather than the events themselves. It is important to take in only information that is helpful to you in your healing.

Focus on the expectation that this will happen. Your perception of outcome makes a huge difference. Change any habits or patterns that are not in synchronicity with your healing program. Absorb only information that is helpful to you. Let yourself know that you are seriously focused on the path toward change. Then use your own intentions to give you that extra edge in your healing.

What you think is what you get.

If you are attempting to feed yourself the same old unproductive thought patterns and just sugarcoat them, think again. For instance, if you are telling yourself that in spring you will start an exercise program, what you are really saying is that these changes are not important enough for you to start now. You are attempting to fool your own cells, and that will never work. They are too smart for that. Who knows you better than yourself? You can’t fool yourself, but you can change yourself. What is most amazing about your brain is its adaptability. It conforms to your own thought processes through expectations, and is always

Aquarium Placement Why It Is So Important In the Home

By Jason S Williams

Traffic patterns of people and house pets near the aquarium should also be taken into consideration. Although, one of the fundamental joys of a fish tank setup is being able to appreciate it visually and to show it off to friends and family, avoid placing an aquarium in a room with high foot traffic or frequent and prolonged loud noises. Excessive noise from the television, stereo or raucous people can also lead to fish stress. Preparing for your fish tank set up should not be seen as a stressful downer for your dream aquarium. If anything, view it as a necessary step that will actually save you stress in the long run once your aquarium is functional. A little thought and preparation beforehand goes a long way towards a successful fish tank set up.

If you want to learn more about Fish Tank Set Up, you can visit my website at http:// for helpful tips on setting up, maintaining and caring for both your Freshwater Aquarium and the fish that inhabit it.

n aquarium begins with an idea, a dream; a mental image of how it will look and the serenity that it will bring. Of course, as with anything else that is worthwhile, proper preparation and scrutiny should be given to the fish tank set up in order to make the idea a reality.

Before one even begins to think about the minutiae of detail, which make keeping an aquarium a fun and involved activity, one needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. An aquarium is a self-contained ecosystem; that fact must never be forgotten. Do not view the aquarium as a piece of decor. Your aquarium will become a passive, yet integral part of your home or office. As such, care and attention must be given to your aquarium set up. Aquarium placement is the most important aspect of any fish tank set up. Think this part through carefully, as a functioning aquarium is quite heavy. The water alone weighs eight pounds per gallon. A simple 40-gallon aquarium can easily surpass 400-pounds in total weight. Not only does the weight make moving an aquarium difficult, it also makes it risky for the tank itself. The forces exerted on the sides of the tank and possible unevenness on the moving surface can create pressures, which lead to fissures and leaks. This is why it is critical to decide on where the fish tank set up will take place prior to filling and stocking it.

Benefits of Aquariums Everyone benefits by relaxing with an aquarium. Whether stressed or high blood pressure. Studies have shown that while watching fish swim around, you become calmer and brings down blood pressure as well as increases sense of peace. Hyperactive children benefit greatly from aquariums. They like watching the fish and it relaxes them. Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients appetite increases while being around an aquarium

Your first task in determining tank placement is to find an area that is able to unite the practical necessities of a functioning aquarium along with those of your original conceptual idea. Keep in mind that the aquarium will require regularly scheduled maintenance. This will include partial water changes, substrate vacuuming, live plant pruning, among other routine tasks. Doing a 25% water change on a 40-gallon tank will require moving 80 pounds of water from your water source to the aquarium. Plus, you will have to dispose of the same volume in removed water. Keep this in mind before placing your fish tank set up in an area that is not easily accessible or too distant from your water source and drain.

All life forms on earth derive their existence, either directly or indirectly, from the energy of the sun. Although in a fish tank setup the direct role of the sun can be taken up by aquarium lighting, keep in mind how natural sunlight and artificial lighting will affect your tank. If your aquarium placement is such that there is excessive exposure to natural or artificial lighting, this could have repercussions. It can disrupt the day/night cycle for your fish leading to problems with appetite, stress and even weakening their immune system. Excessive lighting can also contribute to outbreaks of algae. Conversely, lack of lighting can also cause problems for some fish species and for the healthy development of some live aquarium plants.

You can travel and leave your fish at home now there are even more ways of automatically feeding your fish while gone.

Beautiful decor for your home

Aquariums are educational for children and the entire family. Get your children involved right from the initial set up. Get them to learn about different fish and their needs. They will also learn responsibility and discipline by being a part of their upkeep.

Gems for the Soul

Do You Build a Bridge or a Fence? nce upon a time two brothers, who lived on adjoining farms, fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a conflict.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on the older brother’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m looking for a few days’ work.” – he said. “Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with?” “Yes.” – said the older brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll do him one better.”

The farmer’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge — a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, handrails and all — and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming toward them, his arms outstretched — “You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.”

“See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence –an 8-foot fence — so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand.

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox onto his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said the older brother.

The older brother had to go to town, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing. About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job.

“I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.” Author Unknown

Will You Be

Your Valentine? 9 Ways to Love YourseLF by todd Patkin

The holiday of hearts and flowers is all about giving to friends and family; but maybe it’s a time for a little giving to yourself too.

February 14th looms on the horizon, so does the long list of expectations that comes along with it. If you are one half of a couple, it’s time to start placing flower orders and making reservations. If you aren’t, then you may be dreading the upcoming holiday and looking forward to February 15th instead. But what if this year you choose to do things a little differently? What if, when you make your list of valentines, you include yourself this time? Showing yourself some love this Valentine’s Day could be your sweetest decision yet. I’m not saying to throw away the heartfelt cards and candies, or to cancel your date with your spouse. In fact, I think those things are important. What I don’t want us to continue to do is let ourselves get lost in the shuffle. If we don’t take the time to honor and appreciate ourselves, how can we expect that others will? The more we neglect ourselves, the more our other relationships suffer. If you are constantly doing for others, and leaving yourself on the backburner, you become susceptible to feelings of bitterness and resentment, and your outside relationships will suffer as a consequence. There is nothing selfish about taking care of yourself. I truly believe that taking care of YOU is one of the most important things that you can do for the ones you love. As Valentine’s Day rolls around, showing yourself some love doesn’t necessarily mean sending yourself a box of chocolates or a dozen roses. It’s more about taking the time to think about the things you really want and what makes you feel good…and ridding your life of the people and commitments that don’t fit into that category. If you’re ready to add yourself to your love list this year, then here are some great suggestions for how you can get started. Read on for nine ways to think outside the chocolate box and show yourself a little love this Valentine’s Day:

PAGE 16 • February, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

TAkE NOTiCE. Sit down and really think about your daily life. Evaluate what really makes you feel good and what makes you feel bad. Instead of forcing yourself into the things you don’t really enjoy, I suggest doing more of the things that make you feel good. Ask yourself, “Do I actually enjoy going to the gym or do I hate it?” If the answer is that you hate it, then perhaps it’s time to try out running or a yoga or meditation class instead. If you don’t enjoy going to your monthly book club meeting, then quit. There is no reason why you should continue to force yourself into the things that don’t make you happy. DO A rELATiONSHiP DETOx. As you start to weed out the activities in your life that don’t make you feel good, start to do the same exercise with the people in your life as well. Distance those who make you feel bad, even if its family. Toxic relationships can be a huge barrier to your happiness, and constantly forcing yourself to be disingenuous around people you don’t really like or get along with is literally bad for your own well-being. Do yourself a favor and start investing your time with the people who make you feel good and make your life better. CANCEL yOur PLANS. It’s happened to everyone at some point or another: You commit to a dinner out, a party, or an event that you really don’t want to go to and as the date and time of the engagement draws nearer, your dread grows. As long as it is not an important milestone event for a close friend or family member, one of the best things you can do for yourself is cancel your plans. Forcing yourself to be somewhere or with someone when you really don’t want to be will only leave you feeling frustrated and empty. Instead, choose to spend your time on things you actually want to do. And no need in coming up with a long, complicated story for why you can’t attend. A heartfelt apology explaining that you can’t make the party is enough.

F eature S tory There is nothing selfish about taking care of yourself. I truly believe that taking care of YOU is one of the most important things that you can do for the ones you love. Be okay with your opinions. You have opinions, and it’s likely that they don’t line up with the opinions of everyone you know. And that’s okay. What’s not okay, is when you try to hide or cover up your opinions in the company of others in order to keep the peace or be “PC.”

your overall mood and health. After all, when was the last time you woke up from a great night’s sleep feeling unhappy? Instead of justifying yourself out of that afternoon nap in order to complete one more chore, you should let yourself relax and catch some sleep instead.

When you aren’t true to yourself and your opinions, it feels bad. You feel disingenuous and dishonest. It is perfectly okay to have your own opinions— in fact, that’s what makes each of us so great! The best thing you can do for yourself is to own those opinions proudly. They may not always be popular, but they are a part of who you are—and those in your life who love and respect you will be okay with that.

Push your Saturday morning workout back an hour or two and sleep in. After all, all those things you ‘have to do’ will still be there when you wake up—and you’ll be more refreshed and energized for taking them on. Give yourself the gift of guilt-free shut-eye. I promise you won’t regret it!

Trim your to-do list. Having a list of to-dos is a great way to stay organized; however, it can also cause you to feel overwhelmed and anxious. Look at your own personal to-do list. Is it pages long? Does it make you feel good or constantly behind the eight ball? I suggest taking a long, hard look at your list and prioritizing the items that are truly important. In fact, I advise you to cut your list by 50 percent. Focus only on the have-tos and want-tos instead of the things you have on there just because you think you should. When your list feels manageable, you’ll feel more energized to tackle it. And as you start to cross off each item, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness. Besides, as you mark off old items, you can start to slowly add back the new ones. Stop deferring to everyone. If you find that you are constantly letting others in your life make the decisions, it’s time to stop. Quit deferring to everyone else in order to make them happy. Instead, stand up for the things you want and speak up for yourself. Tonight, YOU pick the restaurant. If you don’t want to see the movie that everyone else has picked, say so. It’s great to compromise some of the time, but when you are constantly putting your own wants and needs aside for the sake of others, you’ll be unhappy and dissatisfied in the long run—and that doesn’t help you or anyone else in your life. Take a “judgment free” nap if you want. Sleep in on the weekends. Getting plenty of sleep is one of the simplest things you can do for yourself to improve

Date yourself. Investing time in relationships is important, and that includes the relationship you have with yourself. Just as you schedule time to date your spouse, or go to dinner with a friend, mark out some one-on-one time for you and, well, you. Go to a movie all by yourself and order popcorn just for you. Visit that museum exhibit you’ve been wanting to see. Try out the new restaurant that just opened in town. Spending some alone time, doing things that you enjoy, is a great way to recharge your batteries. Investing in your relationship with yourself is just as important as investing in the relationships you have with others—you’ll be able to come back to those relationships happier and recharged. Make massages a “regular” thing. For most of us, taking time out to get a massage, manicure, or hair appointment is a “treat” that we don’t allow for ourselves very often (if at all!). Instead of letting these pampering appointments fall into the “splurge” category, I suggest working them into your regular routine. There is nothing wrong with taking the time to take care of yourself on a regular basis, whether that means a bi-monthly massage appointment or working in the time for a long, hot bubble bath several nights a week. Feeling good shouldn’t be a ‘treat’—it should be a part of your everyday life. The most important part of this exercise is that you make it last long past when the red-and-white heart decorations have been packed away. Make loving yourself a year-round commitment, not just an effort you make only on special occasions. You’ll find yourself happier, healthier, and more fulfilled the whole year through.

Argan Oil for Naturally Gorgeous Skin and Hair

By Danna Norek

rgan oil is pressed from the antioxidant and fatty acid-rich kernels found within the nuts of the Argan tree. The oil is often called “Moroccan oil” in the ingredient list for skin and hair care products since the Argan tree is native to Morocco. It can be somewhat expensive to produce since complete mechanization has not yet been achieved to successfully extract the oil. However, the process yields almost no waste as the leftover peels from the fruity flesh and outer shells of the nut are used as a nutrient-rich feed for Moroccan cattle. The exotic oil pressed from the heart of these nutrientdense nuts is even more impressive. It has numerous properties, which can help dramatically improve the health, strength and beauty of the skin and hair when used on a daily basis. It is a light oil that is easily absorbed so it can “go to work” on a deeper level.

High-unsaturated fatty acid content

The composition of Argan oil is roughly 80 percent unsaturated fatty acids which are critical in the repair and healthy functioning of the cells that make up the hair and skin. They are excellent natural moisturizers since they do not interfere with our body’s own moisture balancing mechanisms but rather complement them. The most notable of these fatty acids is linoleic acid, which you may have heard about for its numerous dietary and health benefits. It is considered an “essential” fatty acid, as it is necessary for the proper functioning of our organs and internal body processes.

PAGE 18 • February, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

Linoleic acid has shown some very impressive benefits when it comes to increasing the elasticity and vibrancy of the skin and hair. By supplying a highly effective protective barrier, linoleic acid greatly reduces breakage in the hair, wrinkle formation in the skin and loss of elasticity and strength due to drying and environmental damage. The oil also contains several other oleic acids. All of these acids combined are also effective in repairing and helping protect delicate cell membranes, smoothing rough surfaces and preventing split ends. This makes it an excellent restorative agent for damaged skin and hair.

Naturally high in vitamin E

Vitamin E is of vital importance in preserving the strength and vitality of both the skin and the hair. It is a very potent antioxidant. It is favored as a topical skincare and hair care ingredient because it also has some very powerful benefits in improving their appearance and is even thought to help hair grow faster. Vitamin E also has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it is often recommended for use on sunburned, scarred or otherwise traumatized skin. This vitamin also helps prevent the escape of precious moisture from the epidermis as well as the surface of each strand of hair via the cuticle.

Polyphenol and carotenoid content

In addition to the powerful, natural antioxidant vitamin E, Argan oil contains high levels of phenolic

compounds or polyphenols. These are a group of antioxidants that are found naturally in plants. Since they help fight inflammation and promote healthy cell development while defeating free radical formation, they are truly a powerful weapon against aging. They can help keep the hair and skin smooth and supple by keeping the cells “younger” and healthier. Carotenoids are also natural antioxidants. These nutrients are known to work well in promoting healthy tissues. They are also known for their natural ability to help protect against UV damage and can even help to reduce its effect on exposed areas.

Black Cumin Oil

By Samantha Davis

Most Important Oil You Can Put in Your System

ccording to Dr. Gary Null of the P ro g re s s i v e R a d i o N e t w o r k ( h t t p : / / w w w., “Black cumin oil is probably the single most important oil you can put in your system. Every time you take black cumin you are stimulating your immune system to fight on your behalf and increase natural killer cells.” Null was referring to its ability to improve the immune system, treat cancer and HIV successfully. No truer words were ever spoken. Black cumin is also known as Nigella sativa, black seeds and kalonji and has been healing maladies of the body for more than 2,000 years. Although black cumin has been used for centuries, only during the last 40 years has the true potential of this remedy been realized. Originally, black cumin was used mainly for migraines, asthma and allergies. It has now been shown to be successful in stimulating t h e i mmun e sys tem, treating HIV and healing cancer tumors. These are three of the most worrisome problems people are faced with today, except for heart disease which black cumin has been shown to treat also.

Black cumin is a viable option for immunity and autoimmune diseases

When you look at the broad term “immunity,” autoimmune diseases should also be included. These little black seeds have shown to improve the immune system by 72 percent in as few as four weeks. Two studies were done in 1987 at the I.I.M.E.R. in Panama City, Florida to verify the immune building effects of black cumin. The volunteer groups were given one gram of black cumin twice a day or a placebo. After four weeks, the end results showed a 72 percent increase in T-cell ratios and cell functional activity in most participants. Black cumin is now a viable option to treat and/or

heal people afflicted with autoimmune diseases, which are a leading cause of death and disability for many. In 2010, there w e re a p p ro x i m a t e l y 23.5 million Americans afflicted with autoimmune diseases, which include more than 80 serious diseases. Some of the types are rare and some quite common like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Celiac disease and Crohn’s disease. Still, black cumin heals more than just autoimmune diseases such as cancer, diabetes, baldness, asthma and migraines. It eliminates parasites and even helps with menstrual blood flow.

overall 4.6 percent survival rate over a five-year period. Dr. Arafat went on to say, “Nigella sativa helps treat a broad array of diseases, including some immune and inflammatory disorders. Previous studies also have shown anticancer activity in prostate and colon cancers, as well as antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects.”

How to take black cumin and dosage requirements

It is imperative to purchase organic, cold pressed oil that is free of additives. To improve your immune system, take one teaspoon daily mixed with raw honey or fresh juice one hour before breakfast. For cancer, take three teaspoons daily in divided doses combined with a healthy cancer diet and exercise program. Both immune problems and cancer are treated with the addition of fresh garlic. Black cumin should be taken daily as a preventative measure for all diseases.

Black cumin annihilates pancreatic cancer tumors

Dr. Hwyda Arafat at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson conducted several studies using Nigella sativa (black cumin) to treat pancreatic cancer. The results were astounding with an 80 percent cancer tumor cell death. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in America with an

raditional cleansing programs that call for freshly pressed juices, raw foods, and even room temperature water with lemon juice, maple syrup, and pepper may work for most people when the weather is warm, but how do you experience an effective cleanse without feeling exceedingly cold and frail during late fall, winter, and early spring?

There’s a reason why our bodies crave hot soups and cooked foods during colder months. To ignore the need to support a minimum core body temperature is to allow significant enervation, which is never conducive to supporting optimal health.

I’m not a fan of one, two, or even three day water-only fasts - these short periods of deprivation do little but cause you to lose healthy muscle tissue (I go into detail on this topic here: Is Fasting One Day a Week Good for Your Health?). To give your organs a significant period of rest and to experience a solid, system-wide cleanse during colder months, I typically recommend using hot vegetable broth. If you make your own vegetable broth with generous amounts of nutrient-rich vegetables, you’ll have a mineral-rich liquid to fuel your everyday activities while you avoid slowing down your self-healing and self-cleansing mechanisms with large meals. You can sip on hot vegetable broth throughout the day. And whenever you feel like something more substantial,

you can have room temperature vegetables and fruits - lettuce, celery, carrots, avocados, apples, pears, and persimmons are good choices throughout fall and early winter. So long as you heed the desire to have some healthy, whole foods whenever your body calls for them, you can do this vegetable broth plus whole vegetables and fruits cleanse for one to seven days during colder months whenever you feel the need to rest, get lighter, and be rejuvenated. To make nutrient-rich vegetable broth for this cleanse, you’ll need: 2 small or medium yellow onions, halved 1 bunch of celery, roughly chopped 2 large carrots, roughly chopped 1 bunch of leeks, roughly chopped 1 large bunch of red Swiss chard, roughly chopped • Combine all chopped vegetables in a large pot and cover with cold water. • Bring to a boil. Lower heat and leave to simmer with the lid on for one hour. Turn off the heat, give your broth time to cool to a point where you can comfortably handle it, then strain, using a large spoon or spatula to squeeze liquid and nutrient value out of softened vegetables to maximize yield. Be sure not to transfer hot broth to a glass container. This vegetable broth keeps well in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for several days. Just pour out a bit at a time to heat and sip on throughout the day. If you’re looking to reduce your intake of coffee or tea, try having a mug of this hot vegetable broth whenever you have a craving for something warm - unlike coffee and most types of tea, vegetable broth is actually good for building and maintaining bone strength. If you want to cleanse exclusively with this broth but you need more energy throughout the day, you can blend some of the cooked vegetables with the broth to form a creamy vegetable soup. If you want to use this broth as a base for any type of soup, you may want to season with sea salt, to taste. Hope this recipe for cleansing comes in handy. Herbal Healing For THe Flu Healing & Prevention

Every day, more and more of us are coming back to the knowing that herbs are our powerful allies for both prevention and healing. Open yourself to the Earth and all her healing medicines. She is waiting for you and she will answer – all you need to do is ask. Kathleen Gould

herbal teas using herbs like chamomile, lemon balm, passion flower etc. to help nourish the nervous system and add some slippery elm to help protect the stomach and provide the body with some much needed nutrients.

id you know that flu shots don’t give protection from all types of flu but only the ones the makers guess will be active this winter?

PREvEnTIon ~ Building a powerful immune system may be the best way to prevent the flu. Of course, this will not guarantee that you will not get the flu, but it cannot hurt and may (in most cases) help.

The following is an herbal protocol that gets great results; however, please note, every physiology is unique, so heed your inner wisdom. For the most part, herbs are pretty safe but do take time to learn about the herbs you are using as a few should be used with caution. You can also check with a qualified herbalist if you are unsure how to begin. This protocol is contraindicated in pregnancy.

We all now understand that we are not just physical beings but first and foremost spiritual, emotional beings as well, and as such, staying healthy means decreasing stress and thinking loving positive thoughts as often as possible. HERbAL InFUSIonS ~ Drink lots of whole plant herbal infusions (teas) to keep your body well nourished and well hydrated. These herbs are brimming with vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, anti-oxidants, free radical scavengers and so much that work to help you avoid the flu (and colds too).

boneset w/Red root tincture: 1 dropperful 2 to 4 x day in a little water

If You Get The Flu ~ The main herb to use is Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) mixed with a bit of Red Root in tincture form.

Make your infusions (teas) strong using up to 1 oz of herb or herb blend per quart of water and let steep for at least 4 hours or overnight. Strain, refrigerate and drink 2 to 4 cups daily.

AnTI-vIRAL HERbS ~ Flu and the cold are caused by viruses, which are harder to treat than bacterial infections. One of my favorite anti-viral herbs for prevention is St. Johnswort, (Hypericum perforatum) although echinacea and some others work well too. Take 1 dropperfull each day for prevention. Note: If you already have the flu, take 1 dropperful 2 to 3 x a day. IMMUnE booSTIng SoUPS ~ Soups are an easy and delicious way to infuse all the healing properties of herbs right into your food. Include herbs like astragalus root, dandelion, eleuthero and burdock root. I put these tough roots in a small muslin bag and infuse it in my pot of soup so I can just pull the bag out when the soup is done. Make sure to add lots of onion and garlic for their amazing immune enhancing qualities and don’t forget the medicinal mushrooms and sea vegetables. You can use some or all of these immune boosting herbs in almost all soups you make.

oil of oregano: For the first few days take about 5-10 drops (depending on the product preparation) in water 3-4 x a day, then decrease to 2-4 drops 2 x a day as symptoms lessen. Motherwort tincture: 1 dropperfull 2-4 x a day and as needed.

Herbal infusions (tea): Drink freely throughout the day, but at least 1 cup 2-4 x a day.

IF YoU gET THE FLU ~ The main herb to use is Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) mixed with a bit of Red root (Ceanothus fendleri), in tincture form. Boneset is an immune stimulant that has a long history of being used effectively in cases of influenza and fever. The herb’s common name of boneset was derived from its ability to break the terrible fevers associated with the flu. These fevers were so severe that they were described as bone fever. Red root is a wonderful lymph system stimulant and tonic and anti-inflammatory and more. According to Cass Ingram, M.D., in her book, The Cure is in the Cupboard, oil of oregano is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it might destroy free radicals that cause cancer, strokes and heart disease. Oregano oil works as an antioxidant because of several potent compounds, including rosmarinic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, p-hydroxyhydrocaffeic acid and labiatic acid. The American Cancer Society adds that the oregano herb contains about 30 times more antioxidant capacity than oranges and 42 times the antioxidant power of apples. If there is emotional exhaustion (and there usually is) use Motherwort herb in tincture form to help calm the emotional heart. It is also a good idea to make up some beautiful

Treating the Person & Understanding the Condition

yurveda is a system based on three doshas – three specific types of energy configurations that comprise all of life in the physical world. Since all of the information in Ayurveda is in Sanskrit, a sacred Indian language, the terms require an English translation. The three doshas are: Vata, which is air and space, Pitta, which is fire and water and Kapha, which is earth and water. Let’s take these one at a time.

vATA • Although air and space sound like the same thing, they are really very different. Space signifies an emptiness, and air is what fills up the space. Vata governs the nervous system. Without it nothing would move in your body. Vata is the only dosha that moves. It makes your eyes blink, your blood flow, and it is responsible for all those interesting and sometimes humorous (embarrassing) bodily noises. Vata primary people are small boned, prone to dry hair, dry skin and constipation. They are also creative, fast thinkers and talkers, and occasionally a bit spacey. PITTA • This dosha is fire and water, but this water is more like digestive juices, blood and bile. Pitta people are lean, athletic, competitive types and perfectionists. They are prone to infections, loose stools and burning disorders like ulcers and heavy bleeding. They are also very smart and quick minded; they like things done their way and organized to their liking. KAPHA • Kapha primary people are

From an Ayurvedic point of view all foods are not created energetically equal.

voluptuous like Marilyn Monroe and Angelina Jolie. All the classic beauties are Kapha primary. They have a tendency to put on weight if they do not work out and eat sensibly. Kapha crave sweet and creamy which can be their downfall. They tend towards congestive disorders such as excess fluid in the lungs and body, impacted lymph tissue and oily skin. They are the most compassionate and easy going of the three doshas. They also have the most physical stamina. Every person is made up of a unique combination of all three of these energies. As a matter of fact anything that is living be it animal, vegetable or mineral is made up of these three energies. It is essential to know what energy is your primary constitutional element, as well as your secondary and tertiary elements. Also important, in order to maintain optimal health and longevity, is to know your proclivity for imbalance. Here is why: For example, cranberry juice is excellent food medicine for bladder infections. It is also balancing for people who run energetically hot, or in Ayurvedic speak “have a high Pitta constitution.” However, if you are prone to dry skin, dry hair and constipation, drinking cranberry juice will increase the dry nature of your constitution, exacerbating those symptoms.

a diet food. However, Ayurveda would not agree unless you limit consumption strictly to watermelon. Melons are cold, wet and heavy. That is not optimal energy for losing weight. If you are over weight you already have too much cold, wet, damp energy in your body’s constitution. Eating melons will just add to that imbalance. For weight loss, apples and pears are the best fruits to reach for. But apples and pears again are not good for the folks prone to dry skin, dry hair and constipation. Knowing your body constitution and understanding your proclivity for imbalances are the absolute keys to decoding what foods are your energetic balancing medicine, and what foods are energetically sabotaging to your overall well-being.

Enlightening Views

The most important key to great Feng Shui in your kitchen is paying attention to your intuition. It’s always the best guide…no matter what the Feng Shui “rules” are.

working order and full of soul. The tools you use in your kitchen are not only utilitarian, they should also bring joy and light as you use them. The feel of a sharp knife as it easily slices a ripe tomato, the ease in which you can crush garlic when using a quality garlic press or the feel of well-loved wooden utensils in your hands as you stir and mix--these all contribute to the energy of the meals being prepared. Please do not be tempted to hold onto scratched and dented pots and pans with handles that are hard to grasp or wooden spoons that have seen better days unless you absolutely love them. Some pans do seem to have a soul, and you should hold onto these. You may also wish to pass onto someone else appliances that are rarely, if ever, used and are taking up valuable space energetically and on your countertop. Say goodbye to those late-night “As Seen On TV” purchases that never really lived up to their promises. The Importance of Your Stove In Feng Shui, the stove is considered the most important element of the kitchen. Since food is cooked there, it represents life force and nourishment, but also it’s an energy generator. In traditional Chinese Feng Shui, both the stove and the food cooked on it are connected to finances and abundance. In fact, the stove is considered to have more impact on wealth than any other part of the home. The stove is also believed to affect your vitality, physical health, marriage, family harmony, personal protection from legal entanglements, and many other areas of life. You can see why the stove is deserving of attention and care. In Feng Shui it’s believed the cook should be in a “commanding position” while working at the stove, preferably facing out into the rest of the kitchen or room. However, in most kitchens the stove usually faces a wall. The popular and time-honored Feng Shui “cure” of hanging a mirror against the wall behind the stove to reflect the energy back into the room can be employed. The decorative practice of shiny, reflective back-splashes may have originated from this cure. If the kitchen is very small, strategically positioned mirrors can expand the room and add to the feeling of abundance. Any reason why mirrors are placed behind the stove is to symbolically double the burners. (The number of burners is thought to represent the amount of wealth so if normally there are 4 burners, with the additional mirror, it now looks like there are eight burners. A stove should not be placed by a window, as the wealth energy is said to be able to escape easily from the home. A microwave is often placed above the stove, this is also not considered ideal Feng Shui, as it suppresses the energetic flow of energy in the kitchen. Cooking islands are usually excellent solution as their central placement allows the cook to remain in command and oversee what is happening throughout the kitchen. Additional Feng Shui Tips for the Kitchen • Make sure your stove is clean and isn’t surrounded by clutter. A dirty stove is thought to deplete energy and drain finances. The burners are most important, but a regular cleaning of the oven and broiler is also recommended. • Use all the burners. Only using one or two may suggest you are not utilizing the full potential of the abundance which is available. • Broken burners should be fixed immediately. This applies to anything on the stove that doesn’t work, such as the oven light, fan, clock, oven hinges, or cracked or broken knobs. • Don’t leave empty pans on your stove, as this is believed to symbolize a lack of abundance.

PAGE 24 • february, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

• In Tibetan Feng Shui, the burner in the far left position is considered the most important, as it symbolizes prosperity. Make sure you use this one occasionally. • The stove shouldn’t be right next to the refrigerator, if at all possible. (If it is, then put something made of wood, or a photo of trees, on the refrigerator to soften the effect of this inauspicious placement.) The reasoning is that the cooling properties of the refrigerator symbolically dampens the warming aspect of the stove. However, the fire energy becomes stronger when wood is added. Thus, the picture of something wood balances this energy. • You shouldn’t be able to see the stove from the front door. This is considered very inauspicious. If so, hang a wind chime, curtain, round-cut crystal, or a mobile between the door and the stove. In the kitchen there is natural conflict between Fire and Water. The oven, stove, microwave and toaster represent Fire. Water is represented by the sink, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher. If the oven and sink are on the same wall, they should be separated by counter space if possible. Take the garbage out daily. The garbage should not be immediately visible when you enter the kitchen. Place the garbage can in a pantry or under a sink. • Keep counters as clutter free as possible. • There shouldn’t be any obstacles to movement in the kitchen. The cook should be able to maneuver quickly and easily throughout the kitchen. • Generally bright, vibrant light is much better than dim light, and halogen or incandescent light is better than fluorescent. • Toilets are considered inauspicious and shouldn’t be facing the kitchen. (If so, place a curtain or beaded curtain in front of the door and keep the door closed.) • In traditional Feng Shui, an aquarium shouldn’t be in the kitchen because the water element symbolically puts out the fire element of the stove. • Knives shouldn’t be left out on the counter, especially if they face toward anyone entering the kitchen. Put them away. (However, in a butcher block is okay, if it feels good to you.) • If there are multiple doors into a kitchen or if, in fact, the kitchen is a passage between rooms or if it’s an open kitchen, the “chi” may be too fast, and may be hard to hold onto money, or there may be discord between family members. As a suggestion, place wind chimes, mobiles, or faceted crystals in the doorways. Visualize peace and prosperity as you place these objects. The most important key to great Feng Shui in your kitchen is paying attention to your intuition. It’s always the best guide…no matter what the Feng Shui “rules” are.

Celestial Cycles by Motavenda

I see this larger new “cycle” we are entering as one of “’unification” and “re-balancing” where, at long last, both the male and female energies will coexist in love, mutual honor, and truth side by side into eternity. Rather than having a goal of “empowering the feminine”, I wish to honor both halves of my own soul and souls of all human beings living on Earth and in the spirit world and to embrace a larger, more beautiful and loving vision…one where real balance can be embodied and unfold into this world we all share.

Also, I am happy to be writing for “In Light Times” and joining you on this journey of continuing self-discovery and spiritual unfoldment.

ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19

It is harder for you than most to step back and take a breath and let the dust settle. But now, it is important to slow down so the effects of your previous efforts can manifest and be made visible. This will save energy and give you space to honor the results of shared efforts.

TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20

It is not always easy for a Taurus to let go, even when things no longer serve a higher purpose. Abandoning one form of success is sometimes the key we must use to rotate our lives to the next, more fulfilling place. Trust that you will make things comfortable and nurturing, once again, on the other side.

Important, read Sun, Rising & Moon signs to have a full picture. The Sun, traveling through Aquarius, awakens the visionary in us all, and invites us to share our dreams with others until it enters Pisces on the 18th and we turn within for the search of the Divine. The New moon, on the 10th, also in Aquarius, reveals clues on the pathway forward. The Full moon, on the 25th in Virgo, brings greater clarity on issues of self-containment and personal boundaries, which are vital to understand for healthy coexistence. Mars enters Pisces and Venus enters Aquarius on the 1st, as the male and female energies within us and the world at large seek new balance. We soften our assertiveness and embrace new ideas for drawing to us things we desire. As Mars conjuncts Neptune on the 4th in early Pisces, we define more loving ways for taking action. As Mercury, the planet that rules communications, enters Pisces on the 5th and conjuncts both Neptune and Mars from the 6th through the 8th, we see doorways open for psychic interactions. Mars, Mercury and Chiron then square Jupiter in Gemini on the 9th and 10th, as we heal soul injuries around issues of communicating with others. Where have we been blocked, shut down, shut off and stifled? Now is a good time to feel those unfelt emotions. As Venus in Aquarius squares Saturn in Scorpio on the 10th we embrace the need to transform outdated and shadow-ridden structures into places of beauty and empowerment. Mercury turns retrograde on the 23rd (until March 17th) giving us time to clear away self-estrangement that leads to confusion and misunderstandings. Venus enters Pisces on the 25th and conjuncts Neptune on the 28th…a perfect time to dream dreams of a new world. This is a time of softening and translation. A coming forward of things latent and unborn and dissolving things crystallized that no longer serve us.

Happy Birthday Aquarius! January 20th to February 18th “i Share my gifts With The World”

ruling Planet: Uranus ~ rules: Ankles, Back nerves & Spinal cord Symbol: The Water Bearer ~ Element: Air ~ Energy: Masculine ~ quality: Fixed Colors: White ~ gem Stone: Aquamarine ~ Flower: Orchid ~ Most Compatible Signs: Libra & Gemini ~ High manifestation of Aquarian Energy: Embracing personal freedom; empowering others to be authentic through example ~ Shadow manifestation of Aquarian Energy: Detaching from the self and world because it feels forbidden, dangerous or overwhelming to be embodied here ~ Full Spectrum of Leo/Aquarian Axis: “I exist in my totality through self-exaltation so that I might share my soul and gifts freely, fully, graciously, and generously with my tribe and all humanity.”

GEMINI • May 21 to June 20

Creating from a feminine-based seat of strength and clarity is something for us all to contemplate now. What does this mean? Use that Gemini skill set of yours to explore what is possible in that place of magnetism. You can show others how to bridge new ways of bringing about real physical change.

CANCEr ~ June 21 to July 22

Meting out justice is what is necessary sometimes, Cancer. We each have to step up and take the reigns at times. There are things you see more clearly than others, and it is important to hold steady and, by doing so, allow truth the be the equalizing force for bringing about a new state of balance.

LEO ~ july 23 to Aug. 22

One of the best feelings in life is when we can let go of things that we have outgrown and do so with grace and ease and gratitude. You can embrace new beginnings, by allowing for harmonious change, and in doing so, grow into new places without trauma or negativity being necessary to the process.

virgO ~ Aug. 23 to Sept 22

There is a fine line between forcefulness and bullying and living in strength, clarity and truth with others. Virgos have a natural gift and can work to refine this ability to discern these lines and then use that skill to live in honesty and to coexist with others in places of power and beauty where no one gets pushed around.

LiBrA ~ Sept. 23 to Oct. 22

Being generous brings pleasure to your soul. A high lesson we must learn is how to love ourselves as we give love to and serve others. We must find ways to give without sacrificing the old ways so many of us were taught. The truth is that it is not loving to not care about ourselves. Allow this wisdom to help guide you.

SCOrPiO ~ Oct. 23 to Nov. 21

Life unfolds to help you see your own soul condition clearly. Embrace what you have attracted to yourself. Use information these events provide to look into your own soul for the source of answers you are seeking from within. Use what is revealed to help you understand yourself more fully. Your feelings hold the key.

SAgiTTAriuS ~ Nov. 22 to Dec. 21 Aquarians help us become more courageous. Despite what we have been taught, there is no way to co-create a loving, healthy world if we are not existing in our truth and living as authentic beings both personally, within our own souls, and in our interactions with everyone we meet. It is the Aquarians of the world who carry the deep and unwavering knowing of the essential need for all humanity to come to embrace and embody this realization. The new world that we feel emerging and giving to us hints of its form, a place that will come to feel like home to us all and is a world that the Aquarians in our midst will help guide us toward with a growing confidence through helping us find ways to get our footing inside the unknown and undiscovered terrain. Each sign has an opposite sign and the Leo/Aquarian polarity/axis delineates the fundamental truth that we must each embrace and heal our own soul condition in order to shine our light and to be capable of holding space for others to do the same. If we do not come to know and love our own souls, we are limited in how much we can exist in truth and freedom with ourselves and others. Aquarian energy reveals the beauty of authentic self-expression and the profound nature of the gifts born of genuine and honest co-existence with our fellow man. It is here that all becomes possible again. We were each created in Divine perfection and it is vital we find our way back to that realization so we can love ourselves and each other enough to turn our world into a beautiful work of art…together.

Even Sagittarians need moments of stillness and times of rest. Move away from stagnation; see new directions coming into view. Look to the horizon for the things that awaken your passions and desires and realize, once more, that everything has become possible again. Your are free now to move on.

CAPriCOrN ~ Dec. 22 to Jan. 19

There is the ever-practical and pragmatic honing device that seems to be there at your finger tips determining the likelihood and probability of any particular step you might take. There is magic to unleash; let yourself go a little more now as you reach to embrace the unknown and empower new creations.

AquAriuS ~ Jan. 20 to Feb. 18

There is new love to be experienced in places you have not even imagined. As you find new ways to achieve balance within your own spectrum of emotions…as you grow in love and experience of all your feelings…you are able to give and receive love more than you ever thought possible.

PiSCES ~ Feb. 19 to March 20

Your sensitivity lies in your ability to empower others to own their own emotions more fully. What is natural to you, can be terrifying to others. Move through life unafraid to feel or share what you perceive in this sensitive state; you encourage others to explore and experience that possibility within themselves.

Empowered Numerology by Michele Avanti Alpha Numeric Numerology Chart Each month we will explore the numeric frequency of a specific number that will give insight into its meaning and how it effects our lives. I hope you enjoy this column. Numbers are used everywhere. You can’t go through a single day without engaging with numbers. “How much does this cost?” “What was the phone number?” “Did you get that address right?” “What is your zip code?” “Please put in your pin number.” “That show is on channel 231.” Every day of our lives we use numbers, but what do they mean? Is there any significance to them? Basic numerology addresses the birth date and the name that appears on a birth certificate. But is that all there is? Every bit of Creation is connected, not coincidentally, but logically and numbers are a key to all of it. All numbers have a frequency, much like the notes on a musical scale. When we speak or think, we activate frequencies and each has a numeric basis or counterpart. So what does it mean and how can this knowledge help us in our journey for joy, health, love and prosperity? Let’s start with the most basic number: One, 1, or I. It is a single note, clear frequency, a directive of energy. It reflects what the Ancients called, The Pole*, and for which the Pole Star was named. This ancient energy calls in Primordial Creation, God/Spirit, Direction, Support and the Act of Manifestation. It is not a unifying number but an individuating one. It is interesting when we realize that One begins all creation and it is about, I, the letter whose numerical counterpart is the number, Nine…the completion of all things. So, in this first number, we become aware of a basic principle of creation, it all begins with One and it is the One who will complete the act. This number informs us that we are the creators of our universe, we begin it and we complete it, but we must also realize it is a great expansive circle that once we complete, we begin again on a higher frequency. Understanding this allows you to realize that nothing is flat in creation, but all things spiral and are seen as flat when we look up or down, from the center, which is where each of us stand in our worlds of creation. Let us come back to the mundane and look at how we can use the number one in daily life. When we focus our lives through the filter of One, we consciously engage the universe to manifest what we want. So how do we use this ‘One’ filter? First step is to be aware, that is what we opened in the previous paragraphs. Secondly, we must focus this energy through words, song, meditation, prayer, writing and thought. The key word of power, which represents the Sacred Element of Air, calling in the wisdom of the Ancients, is ‘OM.’ O=6, M=4, together they create 10, which reduced to one digit becomes the number, 1.** See note on how to reduce numbers in numerology. When we focus on the word, OM, sing it, write it, and add to it the images or words of what we desire, we send a clear, direct focused message to Spirit. This frequency can be taken to an even higher octave, by going to a word that is the Master Number*** of one, a word that equals 11, ‘HU.’ (Pronounced like ‘hue.’)

February & its frequency

This period in the Gregorian Calendar, which has been adopted by the Western Collective Consciousness is called February 2013, or Feb. 2013, it carries a numerological frequency unlike any other time in our lives. Here is how the numerology adds up. February, 6+5+2+9+3+1+9+7=42, which reduces to 6. This number is also the key number for the entire year of 2013, six, which makes 2013 a year of choices, networking, and gives a more optimistic attitude.

This chart allows you to quickly access the number related to any letter. Thus you can identify what numbers are active through a name, or address. When looking at the chart, the letters listed below each number will activate that frequency and you can add them together to find the power of a word. For example, the name, Art. Look at the column with number one at the top. There you will find A, thus A=1, R is located in the 9 column, so R=9, and T is located in the 2 column, so T=2. Thus for Art we would add, 1+9+2=12, which when reduced = 3. When we add February’s 6 to 2013’s, 6, we have 12, which equals 3, the number of nurturing, family, re-uniting, working together through challenges. So the current frequency is aligned with working through challenges, new children, those who divide and naturally, how we will make choices during this time is key. This is not the only frequency for the month, additionally, we call February, Feb, which adds up to: 13 and thus the number, 4. These frequencies tell us it is time to transform and take control instead of controlling others, or giving away control. The four regains all the corners of the universe, it activates all centers and swiftly frees or directs. Using all of February’s frequencies to achieve the best possible outcome, this is what is indicated: Be aware of the choices you make this month (2013 will ask this each month.) Make choices to nurture others as family. Allow the love of the Earth to flow through your heart center as you approach life this month. This energy will help you reclaim your power and stop controlling others. Share what you know, but remember that it is not wise to force your knowledge on anyone. It is a period to remember to honor and respect the choices others make for their lives, even if you think you know better. This is the answer to empowerment under the number four. Examine the choices you are making in each cornerstone of your life, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Focus your choices on nurturing and self-empowerment, and you will fulfill numerology’s frequency for February 2013. *The ancients believed there was a pole that held up the heavens, and that information was sent back and forth to heaven through this mighty pole. **In numerology, all numbers are added together and then reduced to a single digit, unless after adding them together the result is a number with double digits, such as: 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. These remain intact and are called Master Numbers. ***Master numbers are all numbers that consist of replicating digits, such as 11, 22, 111, 222, 444,444, etc. Master numbers activate the originating frequency to a higher octave and thus empower the individual exponentially.
