merald is a gemstone, and a variety of the mineral beryl, colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Emeralds are impressive as a stone of wealth and power and were inlayed in the crowns of kings and queens, as well as in the armor of chest plates when going into battle. Before the 20th century, jewelers used the term water, as in “a gem of the finest water,” to express the combination of two qualities: color and crystal. Normally, in the grading of colored gemstones, color is by far the most important criterion. However, in the grading of emeralds, crystal is considered a close second. Both are necessary conditions. A fine emerald must possess not only a pure verdant green hue, but also a high degree of transparency to be considered a top gem.

It can be used to enhance the memory and stimulate the use of greater mental capacity. The Emerald helps to combine the intelligence with discernment, allowing for the choice of “right” action to be the only choice available. It can facilitate intensity and focus in one’s actions. Emeralds may be used to eliminate negativity from one’s life, and bring forth positive actions required to assist one in remaining centered. COLOR Scientifically speaking, color is divided into three components: hue, saturation and tone. Emeralds occur in hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green, with the primary hue necessarily being green. Yellow and blue are the normal secondary hues found in emeralds. Only gems that are medium to dark in tone are considered emerald. In addition, a fine stone should be well saturated; the hue of an emerald should be bright (vivid). carats (172 g). This stone was found in 1967 at La Vega de San Juan mine in Gachalá, Colombia. It is housed in the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Emerald is regarded as the traditional birthstone for May, as well as the traditional gemstone for the astrological signs of Taurus, Gemini and sometimes Aries. Emerald is known as a “stone of successful love.” It is said to provide for domestic bliss and to instill both creativity and loyalty within the self and within others. Also, Emerald can be used to open, activate, and establish the heart chakra, while helping to quiet the emotions. It is a stone to bring harmony to all areas of one’s life. Colombia is by far the world’s largest producer of emeralds, constituting 50–95% of the world production, with the number depending on the year, source and grade. Emerald production in Colombia has increased drastically in the last decade, increasing by 78% from 2000 to 2010. Emeralds are found all over the world in countries such as Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. In the US, emeralds have been found in Connecticut, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In 1998 emeralds were also discovered in the Yukon. There are so many attributes pertaining to this magnificent gemstone, such as it being a stone of inspiration an infinite patience. Emeralds have a wonderful calming effect on the emotions. They can aid in the recovery after infectious illness. And let’s not forget that the color green not only has healing ability, but it attracts money! We’ll All Get there “there must be more to life than increasing its speed.”

kairos. We would relax more and everything would get done. My friend Harriet was on her way to see her psychotherapist when she got stuck behind a slow driver in a no passing zone. At that rate Harriet would be late for her appointment, and she became more and more frustrated. She tried and tried to find a way to pass the slowpoke, but couldn’t. Finally an opening came and she sped past her nemesis. When she turned to look at the slow driver, she saw that it was her therapist. No matter how slowly the slow driver drove, Harriet would have been right on time.

live on a country road that gets so skinny at some points that only one car can pass. When two cars meet, one of them must back up or pull to the side of the road to make way for the other. While the process is inconvenient, it calls for cooperation and saying hi to neighbors. It’s refreshing.

The other day I was on my way to an important meeting I did not want to be late for. At one of the thin junctures I encountered my neighbor Dean approaching in his truck. The moment came when we had to decide which vehicle would yield. While normally I wouldn’t have minded backing up, that day I wished I didn’t have to. Dean seemed to read my mind and he congenially backed his truck up quite a way to let me pass. When I passed him I rolled down my window to say thanks. “No problem,” he smiled. “We’ll all get where we need to get when we need to get there.” Now there’s an affirmation worthy of

posting on a wall. Many of us spend a great deal of our life rushing to get places. In the process we do clumsy things, get embroiled in impatience and irritation, and sometimes cause accidents. In our haste to get somewhere, we miss being somewhere and never seem to get anywhere. The Greek bible, the first translation from the original Aramaic, contains two different words for “time.” One is chronos, which is similar to the way we think of time, dividing the progression of life into seconds, minutes, hours, days, and so on. The other word, kairos, is harder to translate because in our culture we don’t have one word for it. The closest translation would be, “when the time is right,” or “in the fullness of the season,” or “in God’s timing.” Kairos recognizes that there is a right timing for everything, and when that timing comes, things happen…naturally. Kairos does not depend on time; it depends on timing. Those of us who tend to live by chronos could use a good dose of

Gandhi said, “There must be more to life than increasing its speed.” We are addicted to fastness. Yet is the world a better place because we move faster every day? At a certain point speed does not enhance the quality of life, but distracts us from it. People who live in “primitive” cultures know how to just sit. They hang with their families, look at the stars, laugh over their version of a beer, and capture the magic of moments that elude more advanced nations. Ultimately, whoever is closer to peace is more advanced. “To everything there is a season,” Ecclesiastes tells us. Powerful as we believe we are, we cannot make things happen outside their appointed time. If you pick a fruit before it is ripe, it is hard and tasteless. If you wait until after it is ripe, it is spoiled. Pick it at the ripe moment, and it is tasty and nutritious. So it is with events in our lives. Marriage, stepping into a job, changing residence, spiritual maturity, and all important moves have

a timing. Stay in the flow and the right things happen precisely when they are supposed to. Let everything come when it wants to come, and go when it wants to go, and you will be a master of the Tao. Patience does not mean regretfully putting off something you want to happen now. It means discovering the beauty, wonder, and richness of what is happening now so you don’t need to wait for something better to happen. A spiritually mature person is neither patient nor impatient. When you live in the here and now, there is no waiting. When you don’t need to get there, you can be here. Here contains everything you are trying to get there for. It’s a paradox. The more you need, the less you have. The more you have, the less you need. The more time you need, the less you have. Decide you have enough time, and you will not need any. We’ll all get where we need to get when we need to get there. This nugget of country wisdom goes a long way. Even with the short delay on my country road, I got to my appointment at exactly the right moment. Real appointments are made in heaven, and heaven always keeps them.

What Is Your

Excerpted from “Emotional Freedom”

Emotional Type? The most important relationship you’ll ever have is with YOURSELF. To pin down your style of how you relate emotionally, it’s important to know your emotional type. This is the filter through which you see the world, the default setting of your personality to which you revert, especially during stress. It represents your basic tendencies. You can build on these by making the most of your best traits and adopting traits from the other types that appeal to you.

situations, then formulate a plan for handling them so you don’t get caught in a panic. For instance, take your own car places so you don’t get trapped in social situations. (For more strategies see my previous blog “Are You an Empath?”)

Below I discuss four main emotional types I’ve observed in my psychiatric practice. See which one your identify with most, though you may also identify with aspects of the others. Knowing your type can provide insight into how you interact with others and also will help you master your emotions instead of simply reacting when your buttons get pushed. Dealing with emotions effectively isn’t stuffing them away or feeling them less. It’s about establishing balance, strengthening those areas where you’re most vulnerable and maximizing your assets.

type #3. the rock. Strong and Silent type Consistent, dependable, and stable they will always show up for you. You can express emotions freely around them—they won’t get upset or judge. But they often have a hard time expressing their own feelings, and their mates are always trying to get them to express emotions.

Which EmotioNal typE arE you? type #1. the intellectual: intense thinker Intellectuals are bright articulate, incisive analysts who are most comfortable in the mind. The world is powerfully filtered through rational thought. Known for keeping their cool in heated situations, they often struggle with emotions, don’t trust their guts, are slow to engage in anything light-hearted, sensual, or playful. Are you an Intellectual? Do you believe that you can think your way to any solution? When presented with a problem, do you immediately start analyzing the pros and cons rather than noticing how it makes you feel? Do you prefer planning to being spontaneous? Does your overactive mind prevent you from falling asleep? If so, try this: Breathe. If you’re mentally gridlocked, simply inhale and exhale deeply, in through your nose out through your mouth. Exercise. Whether you’re walking, rollerblading, or lifting weights, exercise creates an acute body awareness that relaxes a busy mind. Empathize. Ask yourself, “How can I respond from my heart, not just my head.” Empathize before trying to fix a problem with loved ones too quickly. type #2. the Empath: Emotional Sponge Empaths are highly sensitive, loving, and supportive. They are highly tuned instruments when it comes to emotions and tend to feel everything, sometimes to an extreme. Are you an Empath? Have you been called “too emotional” or “overly sensitive”? If a friend is upset do you start feeling it too? Do you replenish your energy by being alone and tend to get exhausted in crowds? Are you sensitive to noise, smells, and excessive talking? If so, try this: Take calming mini-breaks throughout the day. Go outside for a walk, meditate in your room alone. Focus on exhaling pent up emotions such as anxiety or fear so they don’t lodge in your body. Protect your sensitivities. Make a list of your top five most emotionally rattling PAGE 8 • MAY, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

Are you a Rock? Is it easier for you to listen than to share your feelings? Do you often feel like you are the most dependable person in the room? Are you generally satisfied with the status quo in relationships (though others try to draw you out emotionally)? If so, try this: Stir things up. Begin to initiate emotional exchanges instead of simply responding to them. Remember that showing emotions is a form of passion and generosity too. Express a feeling a day. In a daily journal, write down an emotion you’re experiencing. Don’t hold back. Are you pissed off ? Content? In love? Whatever you feel, bravo! Tell someone. Express the emotion. type #4. the Gusher. attuned to Emotions Gushers are in touch with their emotions and love to share them. No one has to wonder where they’re at. Gushers are able to quickly process negativity and move on. Their downside is that they tend to share “too much information” and over-sharing can burn people out. Are you a Gusher? Do you get anxious if you keep your feelings in? When a problem arises is your first impulse to pick up the phone and share? Do you have trouble sensing other people’s emotional boundaries? If so, try this: Before seeking support, tune into your intuition. Spend a few quiet moments going inward to find out what your gut says. Try to solve the situation from a calm centered place. See what flashes or “ah-has” come to you. Take time to build your own emotional muscles. The most important relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself. If this is good, you’ll be able to have wonderful relationships with others. Knowing your emotional type provides a platform to emotionally evolve and become a truly powerful person. Dr. Judith Orloff, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and has helped patients find emotional freedom for over 20 years. She synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to achieve physical and emotional healing. Do YOU Want the TRUTH? By Dr. Georgina Cannon

Most of the time we live in a fish bowl of our belief system, we KNoW something is true, and we never test it. We KNoW that hard work breeds success. Not true! We KNoW that success breeds success. Not true! We KNoW that going out with wet hair gives you a cold – my Mom said so, so it must be true. Not true!

T

hese and others are our belief system, our truths…the lenses through which we see our world. They are our opinion, assumptions, judgments and attitudes that we bring to all interactions, decisions and experiences. They are OUR truth, but not THE truth. Our truth often changes as we learn more, experience more and become more worldly or wise. Many of our beliefs are inherited from family or the environment in which we grew up. Plus we read books, watch television (television pundits are notorious for making their opinion – the truth). Our beliefs are inclined to get stuck from the moment we form them. So if we believe at age 5 we are stupid and clumsy, because that’s what we are told over and over, then we grow up believing that and it becomes our truth. How many times have you said, or heard someone say, I’m just not lucky. Or I’m always shy, or I’m always dropping things, or even, the doctor knows what he’s doing, he’s always right. We mature intellectually with thought, but when it comes to beliefs, and our truths, which are subconscious, they stay the same as when they were formed…unless we consciously recognise and change them. The fish in the bowl only knows it’s in water when we take it out of the water. So it is with truths. We only know we’re believing something automatically until it is questioned. Dr. Georgina Cannon is an accomplished author and writer whose insight into the world of the subconscious mind and its connections through past lives, relationships and today’s life has won her a worldwide audience and international acclaim. Her latest book, Return Again is now available. Georgina has authored and produced a full range of home-study hypnosis CDs and DVDs that allow viewers and/or listeners to experience the benefits of learning and change in the privacy of their own homes. Wisdom from Wayne

B e W illing to d ream B e W illing to C Hoose G reatness

“By believing passionately in something that does not yet exist we create it.”

My

FAVORITE DEFINITION of success, which I’ve cited on numerous occasions, was offered by Henry David Thoreau in the mid-19th century at Walden Pond: “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” I’ve highlighted two words in Thoreau’s definition of success—dreams and imagined. What Thoreau is saying is so important to you today. Be willing to dream, and imagine yourself becoming all that you wish to be. If you live from those imaginings, the universe will align with you in bringing all you wish for—and even more than you imagined when you were living at an ordinary level of consciousness, or what Thoreau calls “common hours.” Keep in mind the basic axiom—all that now exists was once imagined. It follows then that what you want to exist for you in the future must now be imagined.

You’ll see as you read through these foundations for fulfilling your wishes that using your imagination involves more intensity on your part than just imagining an occasional wishful thought. You must first unlearn some of the ways you’ve been misusing or squandering the capacity your imagination has for providing you with an unlimited ability to manifest all you desire. Thoreau called it, advancing confidently in the direction of your own dreams. Unfortunately, most of us have learned to do the opposite with our imagination, and instead regularly use it to develop mental habits of advancing in precisely the reverse direction of our highest dreams for ourselves. In my book Wishes Fulfilled, I also address in depth how to utilize the I “ams” and live from your I am God awareness, beginning with your imagination. Recall that I am God doesn’t refer to your body in any way. It refers to the birthless, deathless, changeless spirit that remains in all the changing forms your body takes every moment of your temporary life here on Earth. It is important you recognize a few of the imagination missteps that will block you from fulfilling your unique desires. Remember, your imagination is yours and yours alone. You have the inborn capacity to use it in anyway you choose. No one else is responsible for your imagination. Anything placed in your imagination and held there ultimately becomes your reality. Nikos Kazantzakis reinforces this idea by giving these words to his fanciful character Zorba (in his book Zorba the Greek), who always lived his life to the fullest: “By believing passionately in something that does not yet exist we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired.” This is the power of your imagination when what you desire is imagined sufficiently to make it your reality. Don’t diminish this great gift by using it in a way that is antithetical to its I am God original nature. Perhaps the most common misuse of imagination is stressing what you don’t want for yourself. This is the largest category of misusing imagination. Start paying attention to general conversation, and you will be astounded at how incredibly prevalent it is. Imagining that finds expression in phrases like, “I don’t deserve prosperity”, “I am always so unlucky”, “Things never work out for me”, and “I am unhealthy and cannot be healed”, are the kind of ideas that may have been entertained since childhood. Highly functioning self-actualized people simply never imagine what it is they don’t wish to have as their reality. Begin noticing and being careful about keeping your imagination free of thoughts you do not wish to materialize. Instead, initiate a practice of filling your creative thoughts to overflow with ideas and wishes you fully intend to manifest. Honor your imaginings regardless of others seeing them as crazy or impossible. Recall the words of Kazantzakis and passionately believe in that which is in your imagination and which does not yet exist on the physical plane.

UP, UP, UP To A HigHer PlAce To raise up the world, energetically speaking, it is better to be a humming bird (energetically this would show up as love, joy, bliss) than a rock (depression, anger, resentment).

“How can you be peaceful when the world is in such turmoil?” was asked recently with sincere puzzlement as to how anyone can be peaceful—or even cheerful—when so many people in the world are suffering. The question brought to mind Laura, a woman I knew years ago in Boston who would feel emotional and physical pain whenever she heard of a large group of people anywhere in the world experiencing violence. Laura believed it was good to take on other people’s pain, and she wore it like a badge of honor. Yet, in her pain, Laura allowed her vibration to slow down to the point where it would start to drain her energy and slow down the vibration of the people around her. When I saw this I told Laura I doubted that her feeling the pain so strongly was helping anyone and was actually counterproductive to helping people in distress. Laura thought I was being unkind and a bit unfeeling not to support her in her experience. I think I was correct. If we want to help, support, and uplift others, slowing our vibration to the level of a rock is not going to help. And in Laura’s case, she was becoming an energy vampire, so she was actually adding to the problem. To raise up the world, energetically speaking, it is better to be a humming bird (energetically this would show up as love, joy, bliss) than a rock (depression, anger, resentment).

ER to see complete strangers laughing and hugging each other in the hallways. He thought all of this behavior a bit strange until later—when he discovered that Mother Theresa was in the hospital. That’s what was different; the hospital was filled with love. Imagine it. A place of illness transformed and uplifted by the power of love, love so powerful that it helped gently land a helicopter, love so powerful it restored people to health; love so powerful it lifted everyone up. How can we be peaceful when the world is in such turmoil? It’s not how can we be peaceful, it is that we must be peaceful. If we truly wish to raise our world up, up, up to a higher place, we must be the love, be the joy, be the peace, be the hummingbird. Sophia Falke is minister at Unity Center in the Valley. Information on programs, including healing Sundays, at Unity Center can be found at www.uciv.org, Facebook. com, or Meetup.com. One of my favorite songs opens with “Up up up to a higher place, Up up up far beyond this time and space. Up up up to a higher place I feel my soul rising to a higher place.” And that’s what we are being called to do at this point in humanity’s spiritual evolution. We must take our souls to a higher place, take our vibration to a higher level, and by doing so, raise up all humanity. I’m not denigrating Laura’s experience. It was part of her soul’s journey. And perhaps I needed to witness it so I could become clearer on the need to take our vibration higher and to be more aware of when I show up more like a rock than a humming bird. I wish I could say that I was good at keeping my vibration high on a consistent basis. Alas, I do get down once in a while, and sometimes I can even get downright grumpy. However, the more aware I become of my own energy, the sooner I notice if it starts to slow down. And when I notice, I can do something about it. That’s the beauty of this journey we call life. It is full of choices. I can choose how I show up in every moment. I can show up “rock” or I can show up “humming bird.” No matter what is happening around us, we have the power of choice. One of the most powerful choices we can make is to love. Dr. Robert Moldowan shared this testimony to love at one of his fourth Sunday healing seminars at Unity Center. A friend of Robert’s was a medical transport helicopter pilot in Detroit. One day the pilot was having difficulty landing on the hospital roof because of air turbulence. Suddenly it seemed as if a giant hand cupped the helicopter and placed it gently on the roof. The patient, who the medical staff didn’t expect to survive the flight, sat up as they landed and started to speak. While the medical staff transported the patient down the elevator, the pilot took the stairs. He stopped off on the ICU floor and found the medical staff excitedly talking to each other because, miraculously, ICU patients that had been comatose or near death were suddenly alert and moving around. No one could explain it. The pilot continued to the first floor and was amazed when he came to the IN LIGHT TIMES • MAY, 2013 • PAGE 11

Now a more challenging question; what do you do about it? All dogs need to do more than eat, sleep and love you. All dogs need exercise to start with. A walk isn’t just about having a pee or a poop. A walk is a fabulous way to build a strong bond between you and your dog, and an opportunity to demonstrate to your pet that YOU are the leader. As Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer, would say, “YOU need to be the Pack Leader”. Remember that when you walk your dog, you should be the first one out of the house, the first one back into the house, and your dog should walk beside you or slightly behind you. I know that we all love our dogs and often think of them as our children... our babies. Truth be told, in order to provide your pet with what he/she truly needs it is important that you think of your dog first as a dog, and then consider the characteristics of the breed. Then you need to remember that your pet is also an individual. Some breeds need more physical exercise than others. Some need more exercise than others. Herding dogs, as an example, were bred to herd or move livestock. This “job” requires intelligence and an enormous amount of running and endurance. There are dozens of breeds belonging to the “herding” family of dogs including the various types of Sheep dogs and Shepherd dogs, Collies, and Giant Schnauzers to name a few. Other breeds like Jack Russell Terriers, Shelties, and sporting dogs, although not herding breeds, are high energy breeds; requiring more exercise than some lower energy breeds. Think in terms of a 5-mile RUN (not walk) each day as a guide. Also, you can ride a bike or roller blade while your pet keeps up beside you. On the other side of the spectrum; Poodles, Terriers, Shih Tzus, Schnauzers, Bull Dogs, and Pugs, for example have a much lower demand for exercise. Understand that these dogs still need to be walked, at least once each day for at least one hour. You’ll know if your dog is getting enough exercise based on its’ behavior and weight. If your dog is gaining weight you’re either feeding him way too much, offering too many treats, or not giving him enough exercise. Remember too, that older dogs will need less exercise than puppies. One thing to note about walks is that you do NOT want the walk to be about your dogs’ bathroom duties. Dogs absolutely LOVE their walks. If the walk is over immediately after the dog does his “business”, he will try to hold it so the PAGE 12 • MAY, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

walk will last longer. In fact he may wait until you give up and go home, then do his business in the house. It will work better for you if you wait for the dog to “potty”, and then reward that behavior with a one hour walk. If you have some reason that you’re not able to provide your dog with the kind of walks he requires, there are a couple of things you can do. For high-energy dogs you can put a back pack on them filled with water bottles. The extra weight will add more of a challenge on their walk and tire them out quicker. You can also consider purchasing a treadmill. There are treadmills designed specifically for dogs that can also accommodate the speed that your canine companion needs. When using this type of device please do NOT leave your pet unattended. Any number of accidents can occur if no one is watching. Besides, you can still use the “pack leader” attitude and strengthen your bond while your dog is on the treadmill. Now that covers the dog walking part of this segment. Here’s another newsflash. Dogs also need to be mentally stimulated. Again, the amount of stimulation necessary is dependent on the breed and the individual dog. If there’s any question or concern, remember your Vet is an excellent resource and can guide you appropriately. Mental stimulation can take numerous forms. Rough housing with your pet can help to stimulate them mentally; as does training. Once they’re completely “behavior” trained, you can work on fun tricks. Playing catch or fetch is also helpful. These activities can be fun for both of you, enhance the bond between you, and keep your pets mind active. You can also consider agility training for all the same reasons. NOTE that before you begin any serious, intense regimen you should consult your pets’ Veterinarian. Some agility drills can be harmful for your dog under certain conditions; like dogs suffering from arthritis, hip or joint problems, or young pups. Agility drills involving a lot of jumping can be too stressful for young developing joints. Intense weaves are another obstacle you’ll want to be careful of when training your puppy. Swimming is a great activity for your dog. Most dogs enjoy it; it’s good exercise and builds strength. You can have a lot of fun with your dog while swimming. It can also be easier on the joints of an older dog. Again, please check with your best resource, your Vet to make sure this is a good activity for your specific dog. There may be a health issue that would be aggravated by a particular activity. I know, like any good parent, you want what’s best for your pet. Remember to hug your dog today.

Disease Prevention for Your Cat and Dog, Without Vaccination

By Madeleine Innocent

D

isease prevention comes from having a healthy immune system. It does not come from vaccination. Regular readers of Natural News will be well aware of the toxic ingredients of vaccinations, including mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum, cross species tissue, adjuvants and more. It doesn’t take much intelligence to appreciate the toxic effects of these substances on a body.

Natural immunity

A newborn is not born with an immune system. They receive passive immunity from their mother’s milk. As they grow and start to eat solid food, their immune system begins to form. Naturally, the weaning period is tapered off slowly, so that the baby’s immune system can make mistakes as it develops. Once the baby is fully weaned (naturally by the mother, not forced by people), the immune system is very capable. Any passing pathogen, whatever it is, can be easily rebuffed.

www.Funpic.hu who they are, where they come from. Most dogs feel they are the leader of the family pack because humans don’t understand dogs and give them conflicting messages. This leads to high anxiety in the dog and destructive habits. Ultimately, this moves on to depression or aggression. Cats are easily frightened and if they do not have a safe place to escape to, they too can become aggressive.

Healthcare

Veterinary medicines do not address the cause of the problem. They suppress the symptoms. They are toxic, especially to the liver. They suppress the immune system, leading to more problems in the future. They meddle with the DNA. Viruses mutate to produce more serious diseases as a result. Parvo virus developed as a result of the distemper vaccine, feline infectious peritonitis as a result of the feline leukaemia vaccine.

A healthy immune system doesn’t just target common diseases, such as parvo, kennel cough, influenza, enteritis. It targets all disease. A healthy immune system will also be capable of rebuffing new or rare diseases.

Vaccines may have reduced incidences of the original disease, but at a cost worse ones have developed.

There are various aspects of life that contribute in the formation of a healthy immune system. The most important ones are diet, living conditions, mental health and natural healthcare.

Feed your pet in accordance to their evolutionary history, with quality food.

Diet

It is doubtful that there is a commercial pet food that does not harm. From poor quality, cheap ingredients that are deficient in nutrients, to the lack of balance between protein and carbohydrates, to the chemical overload that is supposed to address the nutrient shortfall, to color, to flavor, to improving the consistency, and to preserving the dry and semi-dry foods.

Living conditions, understanding what the species need

Living conditions are extremely important. If your pet is not able of expressing who they are freely, they will suffer mentally. For example, dogs need company. They are pack animals and can become depressed if they spend a lot of time on their own. Cats need to have access to the sun, to the grass under their paws, to feel the energy of nature. Exclusively indoor cats have more health problems than those who have at least some free time outside.

Mental health

How you treat your pet is important. Invariably, people use human concepts to train or treat their pet. This causes many problems. You need to understand

Alternative options

Understand who your pet is and their needs, rather than yours. This can prevent unacceptable behavior. Use a natural healthcare system that deals with the cause of the problem, rather than suppressing the effects. Homeopathy is probably the best of these, with deep acting and far reaching abilities.

Pianist Jim Brickman delivers a solidly beautiful collection of his signature primarily instrumental, adult contemporary pop tunes on Escape. His first album for Sony Jazz after leaving his longtime label Windham Hill, Escape is a heartfelt, somewhat melancholy, and always pretty album that more often than not achieves a cinematic quality. In that sense, tracks such as “’Waterfall,” “Paradise,” and “Barcelona” are sparkling soft rock ballads that bring to mind the best of Dave Grusin.

Gems for the Soul

Fun Facts From Around the World

Some tribes of people, like the Assam in Africa, don’t call themselves families. They call themselves “maharis”, or “motherhoods.” Rosa Parks was the mother of bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that launched the Civil Rights Movement. Chinese family names are often formed (begin) with a sign that means “mother”. It’s a nice way of honoring their moms long past. The ancient Greeks celebrated Mother ’s Day in spring, like we do. They used to honor Rhea, “mother of the gods” with honeycakes and fine drinks and flowers at dawn. Sounds like the beginnings of the Mother ’s Day tradition of breakfast in bed! Mother Shipton was a Prophetess in Britain 500 years ago. She could see the future, and predicted that another Queen Elizabeth would sit on the throne of England. (QE II) Japan’s Imperial family traced their descent from Omikami Amaterasu, the Mother of the World. Julia Ward Howe wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic and was a staunch fighter for women’s rights. She staged an unusual protest for peace in Boston, by celebrating a special day for mothers. Julia wanted to call attention to the need for peace by pointing out mothers who were left alone in the world without their sons and husbands after the bloody Franco-Prussian War. Hindu scripture credits the Great Mother, Kali Ma, with the invention of writing through alphabets, pictographs and beautiful sacred images. George Washington once said, “My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever

saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” The Greek word “meter” and the Sanskrit word “mantra” mean both mother and measurement. Mother Goose is one of the most popular of all children’s entertainers. Her books and stories have been loved for many generations. Native American Indian women have long been honored with the name, “Life of the Nation” for their gift of motherhood to the tribes. Ancient Egyptians believed that “Bast” was the mother of all cats on Earth, and that cats were sacred animals. Rose Kennedy once said, “I looked on child-rearing not only as a work of love and duty, but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honorable profession in the world, and one that demanded the best that I could bring it.” Buddha honored mothers when he said, “As a mother, even at the risk of her own life, loves and protects her child, so let a man cultivate love without measure toward the whole world.” Mother’s Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Australia, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Russia, China, Thailand, all have special celebrations to honor Mothers, but not in the same way or on the same day as the United States. In the Bible, Eve is credited with being the “Mother of All the Living.” During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday.” Servants would go home to see their families, bringing cakes and sweets to their moms. This custom was called “going a-mothering”. Each mother would receive a simnelcake (Latin for “fine flour) and mothers would give a blessing to their children. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia began the campaign that brought about the official observance of Mother’s Day in the United States. Her mother died, and Anna wanted all mothers to be remembered. She asked that white carnations be the official mother’s day symbol. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the orders that made Mother ’s Day a national holiday. Just nine years later, Anna filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop the overcommercialization of Mother’s Day. She lost her fight. Now, cards, letters, candy and dinners out mark Mother’s Day for most families. Anna had hoped for a day of reflection and quiet prayer by families, thanking God for all that mothers had done. Mother Earth is also known as “Terra Firma”. That title is a Latin translation of some lines from one of the Greek poet, Homer’s, greatest poems.

hich supermarket foods are genetically engineered? This is probably the most urgent question that the public has about these novel foods. Opinion polls show that up to 90% of the American public wants GE foods labeled. But despite this overwhelming demand, almost no foods on U.S. grocery shelves reveal their secret, genetically engineered ingredients.

engineered Big Five ingredients in processed foods are:

[Below find helpful information and what to look for when purchasing products.]

SUPERMARkETS & GE FOODS ~ Most supermarkets now have their own store brand products, but unlike the old days, they don’t simply have the name of the Supermarket or “Generic” on them, and it can be difficult to discern what brands are a supermarket’s private label brands, much less which ones may use GMOs or not.

Tips for Avoiding GMOs tip #1: Buy orGaNic ~ Certified organic products are not allowed to contain any GMOs. Therefore, when you purchase products labeled “100% organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients,” all ingredients in these products are not allowed to be produced from GE ingredients. For example, products labeled as “made with organic ingredients” only require 70% of the ingredients to be organic, but 100% must be non-GE. tip #2: looK For “NoN-Gmo” laBElS ~ Companies may voluntarily label products as “non-GMO.” Some labels state “nonGMO” while others spell out “Made Without Genetically Modified Ingredients.” Some products limit their claim to only one particular “At-Risk” ingredient such as soy lecithin, listing it as “non-GMO.” tip #3: aVoiD at-riSK iNGrEDiENtS ~ Avoid products made with any of the crops that are GE. Most GE ingredients are products made from the “Big Five”: corn, soybeans, canola, beet sugar, and cottonseed, used in processed foods. Some of the most common genetically

corn: Corn flour, meal, oil, starch, gluten and syrup. Sweeteners such as fructose, dextrose, and glucose; Modified food starch* Beet Sugar: Sugar not specified as 100% cane sugar is likely from GE sugar beets Soy: Soy flour, lecithin, protein, isolate, and isoflavone, Vegetable oil* and vegetable protein* canola: Canola oil (also called rapeseed oil) cotton: Cottonseed oil *May be derived from other sources

Additionally, many supermarkets now have private label organic brands to choose from, and a few notable chains have removed GMO ingredients from some or all of their non-organic private label products: Whole Foods Market and 365 brands are non-GMO and all of Trader Joe’s store brand products are Non-GMO! Below is a list of some of the largest supermarkets in the U.S., their store brand products, and company statements on rBGH and GM ingredients. Store-brand products are often a great way to purchase non-GMO and USDA Certified Organic products in the supermarket as they are often much less expensive than the national brands. Dairy is often sourced regionally for supermarket chains, so not all brands listed as **rBGHfree may have rBGH-free milk and dairy in all locations–be sure to check the labels! Avoid products made with any of the crops that are GE. Most GE ingredients are products made from the “Big Five”: corn, soybeans, canola, beet sugar, and cottonseed, used in processed foods. U.S. are genetically engineered. ***Papaya is the main exception. Additionally, genealtered sweet corn, zucchini, and some summer squash varieties do occasionally crop up in stores, but it’s rare.

Alternative Meat Products ~ Many alternative meat products are processed and include ingredients that are genetically engineered. Give the ingredients list close attention, to avoid the Big Five, especially soy.

***Most GE papaya is grown in Hawaii, where about half of papayas are genetically engineered. Consumers on the West Coast may want to check with their supermarket produce manager to see whether or not the papaya sold at that market is genetically engineered. Outside the West Coast, most of the papaya you’ll find comes from countries like Brazil and Mexico and areas like the Caribbean, where GE varieties are not cultivated. Most GE soy and corn become animal feed; the vast majority of the remainder is incorporated into processed foods. Monsanto also recently introduced a GE sweet corn you may find in supermarkets. Ask your grocer to find out if the sweet corn they carry is GE. Although infrequent, GE squash (zucchini, yellow crookneck squash), is grown in small amounts; ask your grocer if you are concerned.

Non-GMO • 365 Brand (Whole Foods), Amy’s Kitchen, Bountiful Bean, Small Planet Tofu, Sunshine Burger, Vitasoy, Wildwood, White Wave, Woodstock Farm

To be sure your food is non-GE, buy certified organic summer squash, sweet corn, and papaya. http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/issues/311/ ge-foods/non-gmo-shoppers-guide-325/1853/ fruits-and-vegetables. Fish ~ FDA is currently considering approval of the first GE animal intended for human consumption, a genetically engineered Atlantic salmon. This approval is pending despite overwhelming consumer opposition and unacceptable risks to human health, the marine environment, wild salmon populations and fishing economies. There are several other GE fish in the pipeline as well. To make matters worse, FDA argues that these GE fish don’t even need to be labeled! However, farm-grown fish (trout, catfish, salmon) can be raised on genetically engineered feed. Look for wild rather than farmed fish to avoid this possibility. Canned tuna may be packed in GE oils; to be safe, buy canned fish packed in water or olive oil. Meat & Fowl ~ No genetically modified livestock is yet approved for human consumption. However, plenty of nonorganic foods are produced from animals raised on GM feed such as grains. To avoid meat raised on genetically engineered feed crops, look for the phrase “100% grass fed.” And buy organic as often as possible. Processed and precooked meat may contain genetically engineered oil-based additives and preservatives. Meats with a marinade may include GE ingredients.

If you can’t breastfeed, or need to supplement, buy certified organic infant formulas or formulas labeled as Non-GMO. Most foods for infants are just what the label says with few preservatives or additives except water. You can puree fresh fruits and veggies (except non-organic papaya, yellow squash, corn, or soy) daily for your baby, or try preparing a large batch and freezing it in small jars, bags, ice trays or containers to thaw and use later. This gives you the ease of portable, servingsized jars, and lets you know exactly what’s in it because you made it! If you can’t puree fresh products on a daily basis, try these suggestions: Some baby cereals can have GE ingredients even if the primary component is GE-free. These ingredients may comprise a large part of the food, like the corn in corn chips, or they may play a more minor role, like the soy lecithin in a cookie. Snack foods, because of their many ingredients, can seem like a minefield of GE products. Fortunately, there are GE-free options.

Food for older babies and toddlers, such as noodles and cheese, often contain processed ingredients derived from genetically engineered sources.

Look for snacks made from wheat, rice, potatoes, or oats, and ones that use sunflower, olive or safflower oils. If you eat a lot of dried fruits, or snack mixes

Belly Fat No More! Six Ways to Naturally Combat Toxic Belly Fat By Derrell Jones

A

Superfund site is an area designated by the U.S. EPA for clean up due to dumping or discharge of toxic waste that could be extremely injurious to human health. There is no better analogy for the toxic dumping ground in the body known as belly fat. While unsightly and cumbersome to tote around, the displeasing aesthetics pales in comparison to the massive damage that is occurring on the inside. Before going much further it is necessary to address a simple biological fact for most human beings. The body typically discharges fat from the face, extremities, chest and abdomen in that order. Tricks and gimmicks may work in the short term but for the most part you will only delay or transfer to another area continued fat storage. If you have excessive abdominal girth, a holistic approach must be taken to permanently rid yourself of the toxic beast. A few ideas for addressing belly fat (and fat in general)

Omega 3s:

This is a fat that actually helps you burn fat. Omega 3s increases mitochondrial activity in the cells, essentially turning up the heat. The result is increased fat burning. In addition, omega 3s is an anti-inflammatory, which suppresses fat storage.

Green tea extract:

Tea in general is a very popular drink globally and has long been regarded as beneficial for the body. One of the many noted benefits of green tea is that it is associated with being able to suppress fat accumulation in the body. It is also regarded for its thermogenic qualities helping the body to raise its resting energy output, which promotes fat burning.

Capsicum:

This nutrient comes from red chili peppers and is

PAGE 18 • MAY, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

thought to act upon the sympathetic nervous system increasing thermogenesis, which, as previously mentioned, is important for promoting fat burning. Capsicum has also been shown to influence lipid mobilization from adipose tissue.

Caffeine:

While capsicum works on the sympathetic nervous system in particular, caffeine works on the entire central nervous system. It stimulates increased resting energy expenditure and thermogenesis, each of which influences the body to burn fat.

we do not want. At this point it should be clear that we need to control how we respond to our environment to reduce the body’s stress response. This can be accomplished through breathing exercises, Tai Chi, and yoga, to name just a few mind-body control activities. For a sustained holistic approach that will last and serve you well in the long term consider addressing your belly fat with some of the aforementioned nutrients and modalities. Remember to remain patient as this will take time but it will be time well spent.

Niacin:

Niacin helps the body to efficiently utilize energy, boosting metabolism as a consequence. An increase in metabolism is often needed by most individuals to foster fat loss and weight maintenance.

Stress reduction:

The way our culture has evolved especially in recent history has created a shift in what stresses us. There was a time when physical danger called for us to either fight or flee. Our bodies prepared us for potential life threatening confrontation or a foot race for our lives. These days those types of stresses no longer exist. Today our stress responses are according to psychological stimulation. The problem is our bodies dump the same amount of adrenaline and cortisol into our bloodstreams as if the stressor was a physical danger. Increased cortisol levels cause the body to release glycogen. As a result, blood sugar levels increase and so does insulin. All of these factors increase the body’s ability to store fat, which is what

Mesquite Flour By Michael Ravensthorpe

A Nutritious, Gluten-free Substitute to White Flour Mesquite is a tree that is native to the Americas, especially the desert regions of northern Mexico, western South America, and southern United States.

M

esquite is sturdy and drought-tolerant, and survives well in arid and semiarid regions that receive little rainfall. Although it is considered a nuisance by ranchers because its roots often steal moisture from neighboring flora, the mesquite tree does have a saving grace: it produces highly nutritious seed pods which, in turn, make a flavorful flour that provides us with numerous health benefits. Health benefits Gluten-free - Like buckwheat flour and coconut flour, mesquite flour (also called mesquite powder and mesquite meal) is gluten-free. This is a big plus for everyone, not just for people with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance, because gluten consumption has been linked to brain fog, fatigue, headaches, depression, bloating and gas, and much more. Indeed, in his popular 2011 book, Wheat Belly, Dr. William Davis proves that the gliadin protein contained in gluten polymers is a leading cause of weight gain. Therefore, we should welcome any substitutes to processed white flour, which is high in gluten. Diabetic-friendly - Mesquite flour has a low glycemic index score of 25, which is in the same league as most fruits and vegetables. This means that it has little or no impact on blood sugar levels, largely because the source of its natural sweetness - fructose - doesn’t require insulin to be broken down. For this reason, mesquite flour is suitable for diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals. High in protein - Mesquite flour is comprised of between 13 and 17 percent protein (depending on

the quality), which is comparable to many famously protein-rich seeds such as sunflower seeds and sesame seeds. Moreover, it is a ‘complete’ protein, since it contains all eight essential amino acids. This makes the flour an excellent choice for bodybuilders, athletes, vegetarians, vegans, and anyone else who is seeking high-quality natural energy but doesn’t want to resort to refined carbohydrates. Weight loss food - You can incorporate mesquite flour into a weight loss plan because, aside from being gluten-free and low in carbohydrates, it is also low in fat (three percent) and high in dietary fiber. Although fiber is best known for improving regularity and treating constipation, it also encourages weight loss since it absorbs water from the large intestine, which helps us feel fuller for longer and discourages overeating. Trace mineral content - Mesquite flour contains respectable levels of calcium, which is vital for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, and magnesium, which boosts hormone health and helps us to absorb calcium better. Additionally, it is rich in essential minerals like potassium, zinc, and iron, which keep our bodies functioning optimally.

Is Fasting One Day a Week Good for Your Health?

T

O

answer this question, let’s take a look at what happens in your body when you begin to drink nothing but water.

After your cells use up the sugar in your bloodstream from your last meal or beverage, your body has to find another source of energy for your cells. The first place it turns is your liver as well as the muscles. Both the liver and muscles store sugar in the form of glycogen, and when needed, glycogen can be broken down into glucose, which all your cells can use to produce energy for their ongoing activities. During a water-only fast, your glycogen stores are depleted within about 24 hours. After your glycogen stores are used up, most of your cells begin burning fatty acids for energy; these fatty acids come from your fat reserves, including fatty tissue that surrounds your organs. Two groups of cells, your red blood cells and your brain cells, cannot use fatty acids to fuel their energy needs.

Red blood cells and the brain require glucose, and once glycogen/glucose from your muscles and liver are used up, your brain and red blood cells get their glucose from two sources: From glycerol, which is a component of your fat tissues. From your muscles some of your muscle tissues get broken down, and the amino acids from the muscle tissues are used to produce glucose in the brain and red blood cells. Clearly, it’s not in your best interest to rapidly eat up the muscles to meet the energy requirements of the brain and the red blood cells during a water-only fast. Somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd day of water-only fasting, the liver begins churning out ketones which, come primarily from the breakdown of fatty acids from the fat reserves. Once your liver generates large numbers of ketones, the brain is able to use ketones to fuel itself. At this point, only the red blood cells require glucose that must still be derived

from the breakdown of the muscles; however, with the brain no longer dependent on breakdown of muscles for energy, the rate at which muscles are catabolized will be such that the muscles are spared as much as possible. This state is called “protein sparing” … a survival mechanism built into human physiology to deal with times of famine. Getting back to the big picture; it should be clear that from the 2nd or 3rd day water-only fast, the body meets it energy requirements by burning through your fat reserves. Since the bulk of the toxins in the body are stored in the fat reserves, the longer you fast on water only, the more fat you’ll burn and the more toxins you’ll eliminate from the system. This is why we see elimination of lipomas, atheromas (accumulated waste in your blood vessels), and other conditions related to toxin accumulation during a prolonged water fast. Put another way, the body does not experience significant detoxification during the first 12-24 hours of a wateronly fast. The body begins to eliminate large quantities of toxins only after it begins to burn the fat reserves at a rapid rate. And this doesn’t happen until you’ve used up the glycogen stores in the liver and muscles. So when you fast one day a week, you deplete the stores of sugar in your liver and muscles, and begin to break down your muscles. These are the main things you accomplish during the first day of water fasting. Significant detoxification only begins to occur if you continue past day one of fasting. This is not to say that there are no benefits to fasting one day a week, or

PAGE 20 • MAY, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

that you don’t eliminate any toxins during a one-day fast. You are eliminating toxins with every breath you take. And your body will always increase its rate of ongoing detoxification whenever you get more rest and/or eat less food, because less digestive burdens and more physical rest always mean more available resources for detoxification. Rather than fast one day a week on water only, I think it makes more sense to do a juice fast one day a week, or even once a month. With a juice fast, you can supply your body with enough nutrients that you don’t have to deplete the sugar stores in your liver and muscles, or break down a lot of the muscle tissue. At the same time, because the nutrients in freshly pressed juices are so easily digested, a one-day juice fast can ease the digestive burden and enhance ongoing detoxification to some degree. But let’s be clear: the main benefit of a one-day juice fast is not significant detoxification; it’s a concentrated period of rest for the digestive organs, and an opportunity for the organs that are responsible for ongoing detoxification (liver, kidneys, skin, and lungs) to do a little extra healthpromoting work. To sum things up, I would say it’s not good for long term health to fast one day a week on water only. If you want to give the body a period of rest and intense cleansing once in a while, it makes more sense to spend a day eating all raw fruits and vegetables, or drinking nothing but freshly pressed juices. Motherwort

(Leonurus Cardiaca)

Calm & Re-center with Motherwort So many people today are suffering with issues like grief, loss and anxiety and over time these emotional issues can manifest into many physical imbalances like depression, anxiety/panic attacks, digestive and hormonal imbalances. Motherwort is a perfect example of mind/body medicine as it eases all these emotional and physical symptoms. Motherwort helps to calm the heart, slow down your day and bring peaceful sleep to your nights.

Kathleen Gould

A young woman came to the door of the herb shop and the moment she stepped inside, burst into tears. Her father had just died and she simply did not know what to do with her deep; sadness and loneliness. She was given Motherwort herb. A woman in her early to mid 50’s stopped into the herb shop complaining of hot flashes, anxiety and insomnia. She was given Motherwort herb. A young woman came to the herb shop frightened with panic and anxiety attacks that were debilitating. She was given Motherwort herb. So many people today are suffering with issues like grief, loss and anxiety and over time these emotional issues can manifest into many physical imbalances like depression, anxiety/ panic attacks, digestive and hormonal imbalances.

Motherwort is a perfect example of mind/body medicine as it eases all these emotional and physical symptoms. Motherwort helps to calm the heart, slow down your day and bring peaceful sleep to your nights.

• hot Flashes: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon tincture daily and ½ dropper full at onset of hot flash

Motherwort’s botanical name is Leonurus Cardiaca. Leonurus for lion and cardiac for heart. When you need the heart of a lion. When you need to be calm but strong. This beautiful gift of the earth helps nourish our emotional hearts and is often called, “a mothers hug in a bottle”.

• menstrual cramps: 5-10 drops Motherwort tincture every 10 minutes

There is a Native American term called “coyote medicine”. It is said that when there is great chaos going on, the coyote steps out and circles around the chaos until things settle down. Motherwort is true coyote medicine. She helps you step away from a situation and see it from a different perspective. It obviously does not take the situation away, but it does help you to deal with it better. This plant is very calming yet not sedating. Let’s look at some of the many ways Motherwort, “the lion hearted”, can be used by women (and men) of all ages.

• insomnia: Regular use of Motherwort usually helps bring on restful sleep over time (tea or tincture)

• high Blood pressure due to emotional stress and/or anxiety – 1c tea or 1 dropper full tincture 2 x day Because motherwort is a bitter herb, it is often used in tincture form. If you prefer tea, here are a few herbal recipes that include other healing herbs to help buffer some of the bitterness. high Blood pressure · 2 oz Hawthorn leaf & blossom · 1 oz Motherwort herb · 1 oz Chamomile flower · 1 oz Catnip · 1 oz Spearmint · Stevia (sweet herb) to taste

tightly and bring to simmer. Take off heat and let steep 30 minutes or longer. Drink 2-4 cups daily. Store strained tea in refrigerator. anxiety & Depression tea · 2 oz Oatstraw · 1 oz Motherwort · 1 oz Lemon balm · ½ oz Hawthorn leaf & blossom · 1 oz Peppermint · Stevia (sweet herb) to taste To make: Put 4 teaspoons herb blend and 4 cups pure water in a pot. Cover tightly and bring to simmer. Take off heat and let steep 30 minutes or longer. Drink 2-4 cups daily. Store strained tea in refrigerator.

please Note: These traditional usages are based on the use of whole fresh or dried Motherwort herb teas and tinctures.

To make: Put 4 teaspoons herb blend and 4 cups pure water in a pot. Cover

Note of caution: If you bleed heavy or are having periods of flooding, use with caution as Motherwort can aggravate these symptoms.

• anxiety/panic attack: 1 dropper full tincture each day. Then a dropper full at onset of attack and again every 5-10 minutes until your body settles back down to normal • constipation: Try starting with a dropper full of tincture daily and increase to 1 dropper full 2 x day (morning and evening) if necessary • mild to moderate Depression: 1 dropper full tincture daily IN LIGHT TIMES • MAY, 2013 • PAGE 21

tHe FruIt OF kIngs In November, 1493, Christopher Columbus discovered the pineapple in Guadalupe (the Caribbean Islands) and was the first to introduce the fruit in Spain. Even though Columbus found the fruit, the pineapple traces its origins back to southern Brazil and Paraguay. Because the pineapple resembled the pine cone, it was named piña (the Spanish word for pine cone). In the English language it was referred to as the pineapple as were pine cones, which were assigned their new name later. It was also thought that the pineapple prevented scurvy on the ships that sailed the ocean. James Dole is one of the first U.S. companies that began growing pineapples in Hawaii around 1900 and is considered the “King of Pineapples”. Pineapple became the fruit of royalty and the elite. Top pineapple producers: Thailand, Philippines, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil…just to name a few. The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is the only edible bromeliad today. It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual flowerets that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower. Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked. Color is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness. Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet, it will be a good fruit. The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste. After you cut off the top, you can plant it. It will produce one pineapple in two years. health Benefits: We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today. If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis. The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms. Pineapple is high in manganese, a critical mineral in the development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple’s value. Proteolytic means “breaks down protein”, which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Bromelain is also considered an effective antiinflammatory. Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It also produces mild pain relief. In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling. Fresh pineapple is high in vitamin C, and because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat. If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus and throat operations. Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. Pineapple has a very low risk for allergies. Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice…it really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often make a difference. It’s also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth. resources: www.Top5ofAnything.com; www.KitchenProject.com; www.Levins.com/pineapple. html; www.KingofFruit.com

“Organic” Water organic fruits & vegetables juiced equals “organic water” Clearly we are water beings, made up mostly of water. The physiology of every cell, organ, gland, bone and tissue of the body is composed of water. Intracellular fluid (ICF) is the fluid inside each cell, the extracellular fluid (ECF) are all fluids outside the cells, and together they make up 75% of our water mass, the remaining 25% being the non-cellular part of our blood, the plasma. It is my recommendation that a person drink 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight, and this includes a person that is composed mostly of body fat that comprises his or her weight. Therefore a 200 pound male would drink 100 ounces of water, or 12.5 cups of water. There is another very important component that must be factored into proper water hydration. This component will vary from individual to individual based on dietary habits. How much raw fruit and vegetables do you eat per day? Proper hydration is by far the most serious dietary topic we can discuss when on a path to assuring a sound health plan for ourselves. Hydrating and lubricating the body with anything other than pure organic waters will not provide the toxic cleanup we are so desperately in need of. It is like trying to hydrate the trillions of cells with toxic water, and expecting to be healthy! Foods that are grown in organic soils will be rich with the complete nutrients and minerals that the soil provides. As the roots of the plant or tree go deep into the soil, they take up the nutrients as well as the waters that are rich in minerals and nutrients. The filtration system of nature, soil, rocks and the complex root system of the plant gives us what I call organic waters. Not just organic water, but nutritious organic water. Not like the artificially colored bottled waters that claim to be vitamin or mineral waters that you pay more for than you would the organic fruit that would quench your thirst and provide you complete nutrients God made instead of laboratory made. I would encourage people to consider eating more raw organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as possible. That organic watermelon has more nutrient rich energy packed water than you will ever find in a fancy plastic bottle making all sorts of claims that are nowhere close to the truth. Vitamin waters, mineral waters, all manipulated waters with isolated nutrients and potential toxic substances, including artificial colors that they call ‘natural’. Save your hard earned cash, and buy an organic apple or organic peach instead! Watermelon is possibly the very best and most economical water you can hydrate your cells with! This nutrient rich organic fruit does not come with anything artificial or potentially harmful. And this sweet and juicy treat is loaded with additional nutrients that help blood flow. The watermelon rind is nature’s natural blood thinner without risks. Simply juice the entire watermelon and drink 6 to 8 ounces daily. The organic baby coconut, with the mineral and nutrient rich water contained in its own sanitary container, and the tender flesh of the nut meat, is so powerful you could survive on it alone! Organic coconut water is natural isotonic water that has the same amount of natural electrolytes found in human plasma. The organic coconut water has many nutritional benefits as it does energizing properties, and like the organic watermelon and virtually all organic fruits, the health benefits cannot be equaled to a pill, potion or manmade energy drink. So my recommendation is simply this, instead of buying that bottle of water, pick up an organic apple or peach, watermelon or young coconut, and hydrate your cells with as close to the only organic water remaining on the planet, and get more energy than you would from the bottled water, soda or energy drink. Organic water is our best option, and to get the organic waters all you need to do is support your organic farmer or produce grower. It’s as close to nature as you are going to get!

Wish-Bone Candy, Chocolate Products & Sweetners ~ Many sweeteners, and products like candy and chocolate that contain them, can come from GMO sources. Look for organic and non-GMO sweeteners, candy and chocolate products made with 100% cane sugar, evaporated cane juice, or organic sugar to avoid GE beet sugar, and watch out for soy lecithin in chocolates and corn syrup in candies. Molasses can also be derived from GE sugar beets, so choose organic molasses. Milk and white chocolate products are often manufactured with milk from cows treated with rBGH. Sugar-free candies often contain aspartame, known commercially as NutraSweet. NutraSweet can be made from genetically modified crops.

Sodas, Juices & Beverages ~ The good news is, since papaya is the only whole fruit that is genetically engineered, most juices are nonGMO. On the other hand, the prevalence of corn-based sweeteners and sugar in fruit juices is cause for concern. Look for 100% juice blends. Similarly many sodas are primarily comprised of water and corn syrup— there is a high probability that these drinks contain genetically engineered ingredients. Look for sodas without corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup (or Nutrasweet), and those sweetened with 100% cane sugar or evaporated cane juice.

Celestial Cycles by Motavenda

My thoughts on “Needs and Desires” by Moti In order to unfold inside of our lives and fulfill our deepest dreams and desires, we must be open to resources flowing in. For many who have been “spiritually” inclined, it can seem counter to our beliefs to open ourselves to abundance. Yet, without being open, we are limited in what we can make real. What do you wish to bring to fruition? Take steps to pursue your dreams and passions knowing that you were designed to be supported as your desires come forth into being.

Important, read Sun, Rising & Moon signs to have a full picture. So, what’s up the with heavens? The Sun, traveling through Taurus, steadies and helps us ground ourselves more…until it enters Gemini on the 20th and we embrace new experiences…exploring unfamiliar territory. The New moon/Solar Eclipse on the 9th, also in Taurus, stirs feelings of unfulfilled desires. The Full moon/lunar Eclipse on the 25th in Sagittarius, finds us yearning to share our philosophical insights.

ARIES • Mar. 21 to Apr. 19

Relinquishing need for justice can be deeply liberating. This notion can feel confusing in a world where so much imbalance and chaos is underway. Oftentimes, people are in complete error, living out of harmony with love, and they are not put in check. We must grow in trust that all is in divine order.

TAURUS • Apr. 20 to May 20

There are times when pleasure seems out of reach and we must allow ourselves to feel a broader spectrum of emotions. If the usual external sources of pleasure are slipping through our fingers like sand, go into the resultant emotions. Allow feelings of loss to overwhelm and release deeper grief in your soul.

GEMINI • May 21 to June 20

Starting from scratch can be quite invigorating. Take a deep breath and release the old. There is nothing quite as inspiring and, at times unnerving, as facing a blank canvas. Moving into unknown terrain invites feelings of fear due to being out of control. This is how art is created. Indulge yourself and go there.

Mercury enters Taurus on the 1st; encouraging forthrightness in all our exchanges. Regardless of what we may have been taught, truth is essential in all our relationships if we are to live together in health and wholeness. Mars trines Pluto in Capricorn on the 5th as we take action to bring more light to things created in the past in need of transformation. Venus enters Gemini on the 9th and squares Uranus in Pisces on the 13th reminding us of the value in the viewpoints of others as we open our hearts to commune in spiritual ways.

caNcEr ~ June 21 to July 22

Mercury moves into it’s natural sign of Gemini on the 15th and forms a square to Neptune in Pisces on the 18th. We can grow spiritually in leaps and bounds when we are open to new perceptions. It is always beneficial to let go of beliefs that no longer serve us; regardless of how invested in them we may have been. As Uranus squares Pluto on the 20th, there is a further shaking up of the structures that no longer serve us. There is a dance to embrace, a balance we each must find, between safety and freedom. It will be through co-creating truly loving and sustainable structures that we can unfold together in all our glory.

lEo ~ July 23 to aug. 22

As Mercury in Gemini squares Chiron in Pisces on the 22nd, we feel the places inside us have been shut down and we turn with nurturing toward our own souls. It is through self-compassion that we heal our souls. Mercury then conjuncts Venus on the 24th and Jupiter on the 27th. It doesn’t serve us to not express our truth or share our values. It is by bringing forth our own passions and desires that we can grow our world into greater states of beauty and balance. As Venus conjuncts Jupiter on the 28th we gain insights into healthy pathways for new expansion. Mercury enters Cancer on the 31st inviting us to communicate our real feelings more often, and as Mars enters Gemini on the 31st, we are filled with courage to explore new realities and be more open to the perceptions of the others who have gone before us. Motavenda “Moti” Melchizedek is an artist, writer and astrologer specializing in the areas of personal empowerment, family of origin issues, personal dreams and destiny. She is a student and teacher of the principles of “Divine Love” and can be reached at 575-534-1024 or visit: www.InnerWorldDesigns.com.

Happy Birthday Taurus! april 20th to may 20th “i haVE”

ruling planet: Venus ~ rules: Throat & Neck ~ Symbol: The Bull ~ Element: Earth Energy: Feminine ~ quality: Fixed ~ color: Green ~ Gem Stone: Emerald ~ Flower: Violet & Poppy ~ most compatible Signs: Virgo & Cappricorn ~ high manifestation of taurus Energy: Grounding ourselves through knowing and allow for what sustains and nourishes us ~ Shadow manifestation of taurus Energy: Having just for the sake of having. Being overtaken by greediness, gluttony, possessiveness and becoming entrenched in stances born of stubbornness ~ Full Spectrum of the taurus/Scorpio axis: “I realize and allow for what I need to sustain my life and to thrive and I share so that I might co-create in depth and beauty with others.” Taurus energy helps guide us through the challenging terrain of materialism. Here we come to value knowing what it is we need in order to sustain and empower ourselves so we can ground and unfold in our totality on Earth. We were each created with the passions and desires we carry deep within our souls and we hold the keys to bringing them to fruition. The goal is to find balance in stability and gain stronger footing in our pursuits as we progress through life while remaining open to the organic nature of life and guiding principles of divine love. We must recognize our needs and allow support to flow into our lives so we can find fulfillment in ways that are in harmony with love. Love of all beings and love of the environment is key. We have been born into a divine creation that has gone astray and it is up to each of us to come to understand how we can create and co-create in alignment with divine energy. This entails loving ourselves and all life everywhere as well as growing our capacity to both receive and give freely. Greed and selfishness will have no place in our divine destiny. We must realize the sacred nature of the gifts we are given and allow resources to flow through our lives effortlessly so they can reach the places that we, in our purest state, wish to see nurtured. Taurus energy holds the wisdom of the potential for a loving world that is rich and wondrous to behold where we enjoy the earthly delights while honoring all living things.

PAGE 28 • MAY, 2013 • IN LIGHT TIMES

Sometimes our insights seem irrelevant to others. We can allow the feelings of others to pass through us without changing our relationship to our own sense of worth. We are all different, independent and separate from each other. When we connect with those who cannot see our worth, it does not make us worthless.

Spirit world interactions are ongoing with us all the time; whether conscious of the effects or not. It is worth it to acknowledge these influences, both positive and negative. Oftentimes, with an emotionally provocative experience, we can be overcome by another’s energy and moved in directions not our own.

VirGo ~ aug. 23 to Sept 22

All that was known and learned and held onto dearly is released now to make room for more expanding Virgo. We can cling tenaciously to things we thought were truth, that were actually false beliefs passed onto us, with certainty, that were based upon untrue assumptions. You are allowed to let these things go.

liBra ~ Sept. 23 to oct. 22

Magic in all its potential swirls around you these days Libra. It’s as though the ripples that move out from a simple gesture are visible to the naked eye. This is a gift. You can work with awareness in loving and conscious ways to bring about desired change in your life. Be a conscious co-creator.

Scorpio ~ oct. 23 to Nov. 21

There is not always an obvious correlation between our long-term efforts and the lack of apparent success. There are times when a delay is in play. In fact, sometimes we can work directly on something and not see the effects show up for years into the future. Just do your best, trust and surrender.

SaGittariuS ~ Nov. 22 to Dec. 21

Abundance is a state of mind you are able to move into and spend time holding. There is truth in the notion that we can be in a singular set of circumstances yet have access to multitude of possible experiences. What we attract is dependent upon our soul condition. Everything is revealed.

capricorN ~ Dec. 22 to Jan. 19

We are each capable of drawing upon higher energies to infuse us with more hope and understanding. It is not always easy to hold the more evolved view and see how everything fits together in a larger, loving plan. In such times, it is wise to call on others who can help us hold our faith.

aquariuS ~ Jan. 20 to Feb. 18

What people or conditions are undermining your efforts? This is what you contemplate now. Often, we can end up pressured into accepting things that are unloving and, despite what we have been taught to believe, are choices not good for us or aligned with what we would choose from places of true freedom.

piScES ~ Feb. 19 to march 20

Heroic efforts are sometimes needed Pisces. You are fluid and able to rise to the occasion. What is easy for you to accomplish can be a saving grace to another in need. You are filled with love and satisfaction as you show up for others who need you and who you can help without sacrifice.

Empowered Numerology by Michele Avanti alpha Numeric Numerology chart This month we will look at the number four, which is the first fully physical number. Through four, we become grounded on this earth. It signifies physical Creation, the power of the four directions and the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water which sustain all life and remind us of how our planet came to be. Earth began as a renegade fiery rock charging through this solar system. Eventually it reached a place in space where the inertia of its movement and the magnetics of the Sun, as well as other planets in our solar system, caused it to settle into an orbit; the comfortable spot it has held for millennium in the eco-system of this solar system. While the rock cooled, it developed a balanced spin and a steady orbit, and waters that may have been trapped inside or frozen in deep pockets rose to the surface. They formed oceans, ice caps, rivers, lakes and springs. Water filled a large portion of the surface of the now developing planet, while changes of hot and cold, due to the spin and the stretch of the orbit created seasonal and regional climates; thus the planet developed an atmosphere. This created the perfect environment for many life forms. Contained in the number four is the history of Earth. In single strokes, four creates a square, the foundation of a building, a protective perimeter, a controlled space; the symbol for the basis of grounded growth. The four corners of the space symbolize the four cornerstones of creation and in each individual’s life they are represented in several ways: the personal line of creation; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual parts of who we are. the integrating line of creation; the self, the pairing or mating relationship, the progeny and the genetic/dynastic ancestry. the tribal line of creation; the individual personality, the family circle, the tribal service/ career, and the tribal outreach - warrior or diplomat. Additionally in complex nations like ours, where ethnicities and religions are mixed the tribal line breaks into two other parts: the national/patriotic line of creation; identical to the tribal except it aligns with the government…not ethnic culture. the religious line of creation; identical to the tribal except this aligns with religious beliefs which may be global as in Christian or Hindu, etc; or more specific as in Lutheran verses Catholic. This information helps us explore where we focus and how we ground. Taking time to consider each area will reveal where we are out of balance. By understanding areas in our lines of creation, we begin to understand the number four. Bringing issues into balance, we take control of our lives, and thus we create personal peace. When we are in harmony with four, we are in total control of our lives When out of sync with four, we discover an area where we’re telling others what to do and how to do it. We’re taking away someone else’s power of choice, taking on a karmic burden and losing control of our lives. Being the foundation of creation for the human form, and its stability; four asks that we anchor the four elements within ourselves: fire (passion and creativity), with water (emotions, dreams, and sensitivity), with air (thoughts, words and judgments), and earth (actions, and physical health). When each area is in balance, we have peace and happiness in our lives. Here is a simple chant to help bring the number four into balance: “El Ka Leem Om.” Repeat in rounds of four. These are the Sanskrit words for Earth, Fire, Water and Air. By chanting them, we call in the Divine Intelligence of each element to bring peace and balance.

May &

its frequencies May is M (4) + a (1) + y (7) = 12, which reduces to 3 2013 is 2 + 0 + 1 + 3 = 6 Total 3 + 6 = 9 May carries the frequency of the number three, the number of nurturing. Three is feminine water. It signals the union or separation of two, which results in a third part. Being an act of creation from the two, this third part must be nurtured to grow. May’s energy of Taurian Earth takes the three from watery emotion to practical action. So, in May, three is about nurturing the physical body in practical ways. When we satiate the body, we nurture our emotions and mental activity flattens into a peaceful zone.

This chart allows you to quickly access the number related to any letter. Thus you can identify what numbers are active through a name, or address. When looking at the chart, the letters listed below each number will activate that frequency and you can add them together to find the power of a word. For example, the name, Art. Look at the column with number one at the top. There you will find A, thus A=1, R is located in the 9 column, so R=9, and T is located in the 2 column, so T=2. Thus for Art we would add, 1+9+2=12, which when reduced = 3.

Nurturing the body can be done with food, and physical pleasures of all kinds: massage, swimming, dance, etc. May emphasizes dancing with nature. We may do a Hawaiian hula, playfully celebrate with the May pole, or waltz in the woods. Whatever dance we choose will align us with the four elements and they will ground and balance us with love, compassion, mental clarity and inspired passion. The full numerology of May 2013 asks us to make a conscious choice (6) to nurture ourselves and the Earth (3), and to fulfill our choices completely (9). Nine is the perfect number; it encompasses three, three times. While nurturing yourself, you will discover your dreams, and when you nurture your dreams, you will complete both yourself and your dreams. This is the perfect act of completion, which is part of the number nine. Considering the frequencies of May 2013, whose numbers are 3, 6, 9, this month asks us to choose to complete our self-nurturing dreams. It asks us to ask ourselves, “What would I love to do, that I have said, ‘Someday’…” May 2013 contains energy to ground our ‘Someday dreams’ … into now.

The ancients believed there was a pole that held up the heavens, and that information was sent back and forth to heaven through this mighty pole.

In numerology, all numbers are added together and then reduced to a single digit, unless after adding them together the result is a number with double digits, such as: 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. These remain intact and are called Master Numbers.

Master numbers are all numbers that consist of replicating digits, such as 11, 22, 111, 222, 444,444, etc. Master numbers activate the originating frequency to a higher octave and thus empower the individual exponentially.

We welcome any questions about the meaning of a name, and will be addressing names in this column later in the year.
