From The

I am going to dispense with my normal editorial this month. For the past 13 years or so, my dear friend, Michele Avanti has been providing the readers of In Light Times with the monthly Astrological Horoscope. Well, as with all beginnings, there has to be an ending. Michele has decided to retire from doing the column and is stepping into a new life. “It is time for me to do my ‘bucket list’ and I am really excited” states Michele. “I loved doing the column all these years and I know I will miss it. However, I have books to write, places to go and my plate is overflowing…so I must move on.” Michele will be deeply missed; yet she is not going far. I have already solicited her for some articles which I look forward to sharing with you. To Michele, enjoy your new adventures and I’ll give you two months reprieve before the first article is due! Love ya. Now for the rest of the story. It is remarkable how, when we declare our intentions, the Universe responds. Recently, Eugenia and I met with our friend, Annette Rizzolo for lunch. With her was a delightful friend, Clarice, who just so happens to be an astrologer and numerologist. Within minutes, we became fast friends. Clarice’s humor, her knowledge and her forthright manner impressed us both. Needless to say, we invited her to be the “new kid” on the block. With the March issue Clarice will begin her journey with In Light Times. Not only will she be doing the monthly astrology column, there will be a surprise addition. So, there you have it. We say a fond and heartfelt farewell to Michele, our long-time friend and we also welcome Clarice, a new friend I know everyone will enjoy.

To: In Light Times Mail c/o In Light Times Las Vegas, NV . Dear Michelene, Your paper is getting better and better. It seems to sparkle and be alive and I just don’t know how you and Eugenia do it month after month. I have been such a fan for 15 years and have introducted it to all my friends. I can hardly wait until the next issue comes out. I simply loved the December and January issues. The Himalayan Salt Crystals, Kirael Speaks, Michele’s predictions…they were great. I have a question. Are you planning to celebrate your 25th anniversary? I’d love to help in whatever way possible. I’ll watch for any announcements. Love & blessings my friends. Jaimee F. Green Valley, NV Dear Jaimee, It is amazing since the esculation of the energy that is so apparent. I believe that the “aliveness” that you are feeling with the paper is a reflection of what is taking place on the planet. I can’t help but notice the air around us; the energy and vibration is so elevated that it can make one giddy. It is the sign of the times and we have wonderful opportunities ahead. Just hang on to your seat. I’m glad you enjoyed the issues. Eugenia and I are working hard to bring new and exciting articles to you and a new look. As to the 25th anniversary…you bet we are. Thank you for your support and letter. Many blessings, Michelene In Light Times Las Vegas, NV

.

Dear Michelene & Eugenia: I wish to thank you, Michelene and Eugenia, for the opportunity to be involved with your special team at In Light Times, as the new Astrologer. I enjoyed our initial meeting greatly, and am so happy that my Manager, Editor and dear friend, Annette Rizzolo, was the conduit that brought us together. I found the both of you to be very inspiring, delightful, and I am deeply grateful for your support and generosity.

Michele, thank you for being such an important part of In Light Times and for sharing your energies with our family. Clarice, welcome, we look forward to the journey.

Michele Avanti left big shoes to fill, she is great! I will do my best to bring knowledge and enlightenment to your loyal family of readers, as we approach the dawning of the new Age of Aquarius, and beyond. New beginnings are always so adventurous and exciting!

Many Blessings, much love and Happy Valentines Day. Be well my friends,

Again, thank you for making my mission a reality. Clarice Barrett, Msc.D. Las Vegas, NV

Do

Something Big

By Judi Moreo

It’s your choice! You can go through life getting by or you can do something that really matters. It could be something you do for someone else or something you do for yourself. It could even be something you do for the world. One thing I’ve learned over the years is, it’s just as easy to do something big as it is to do something small. That’s why I get my coaching clients to make a commitment to writing a book, preparing a thought provoking speech, completing a degree, launching a business, or finally, doing an around the world trip. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it is something that resonates with you and will give you a sense of satisfaction and joy. What matters is that you commit and then do what it takes to make it happen. This time next year, you’ll be a year older and exactly where you are today if you don’t commit to setting a goal and making a change to the way you’ve always done things. Stop playing small. Acknowledge the talents you have and do something with them. Many of us have done something in the past and had people put us down or make negative comments, so we just put that talent on the back burner in order to avoid any further criticism. We stopped trying. We stopped trusting ourselves. We stopped believing. We started shrinking! We even apologize for our accomplishments, downplay our successes, and hide our brilliance behind the walls we’ve built to protect ourselves from hurt. We become afraid that no matter what we do, we will fail.

You can do what you want to do.You first must know what it is, commit to it, and then do whatever it takes to make it happen. This year you can accomplish something big. It’s time to stop letting fear control us and stop ignoring the calling of our hearts. Stop being concerned about the thoughts and comments of others. It’s time to take back your life and do something big. Even if you fail, you will have the satisfaction of making the effort and you will know for yourself what you can and cannot do. And you will have had small successes on the way to the goal you were attempting to reach. Take time to sit with yourself and listen to what your heart is saying. Journal. This is a place to be honest and authentic…to write down your feelings, desires and ideas. A journal is a place to plan what you want and how to get it. One of the benefits of journaling is that you can go back , read, and based on that plan, figure out how to get what you desire. It’s also a place to find out what you don’t want so that you can get the little things out of the way and make room for doing something big. Write goals that will inspire you to use your talents to accomplish what you want deep in the recesses of your soul. Give yourself permission to operate outside of your comfort zone. Take action steps that you are afraid to take. Ask yourself, “If the world were perfect, and money were no object, what would I do?” And then, do that! Be careful not to share your big ideas with the people who have told you that you can’t succeed. Share your ideas with people who believe in you and can assist you in making your dreams happen. Last year, one of my coaching clients wanted to write a book. She had no idea where to begin and really didn’t believe she could accomplish her dream in a year, but I believed in her. She had a great story to tell as well as the passion and desire to tell it. She just needed someone like me who could show her the path, keep her on schedule, and hold her accountable. It is now less than a year later and her completed manuscript is being edited and submitted for publication. You can do what you want to do. You first have to know what it is, commit to it, and then do whatever it takes to make it happen. This year, you can accomplish something big!

n e h o C n a l A The Book of Deservingness

As we proceed into 2012 we must be clear on our vision of who we are, the goals we hold most sacred, and what we deserve. In the Jewish religion, at the outset of the New Year adherents offer each other the blessing, “May you be inscribed in The Book of Life,” meaning, “May you live healthfully and joyfully during the coming year.” The Book of Life contains a chapter called The Book of Deservingness. Its appropriate blessing might be, “May you know deep within your soul that you deserve to have all the good things your heart desires.” Abraham-Hicks explains that there are two key elements to achieve any manifestation: desire and deservingness. When you seek to attain any goal, Abraham suggests that you focus on two questions: “Why do I want this?” and “Why do I deserve this?” When you are clear on those two answers, all the good that is yours will come to you. Here are three true stories from The Book of Deservingness: First Story I occasionally visit a lovely retreat center, Harbin Hot Springs, near Calistoga, California, where some of the best massages on the planet are generously doled out. I used to go to Harbin for three or four days to renew myself before or after a lecture tour. During that period I would usually sign up for one massage. Soon after I arrived one day I went to the massage register to record my name in the blank for my massage appointment. Looking through the schedule of signups, I noticed that one fellow had signed up for a massage every day for three days. The idea of doing this struck me as a revelation — a person could have a massage three days in a row if he wanted! I had never even considered this possibility, since on some subconscious level I considered so much pleasure to be gluttonous or self-indulgent. But when I saw that this fellow had dove into the very heart of the pleasure machine, I realized that such an act was doable — and I really wanted to do it too. I gleefully registered for massages three days in a row, and went on to love every minute of them. I don’t remember

We all have a part of our mind that feels limited to a one massage only; “other people deserve, but not me”. To step into our true deservingness, we must question that limit and find reasons for our greater deservingness, reinforced by models of those who are manifesting what we desire and demonstrating that the bigger vision is possible and doable.

“May you know deep within your soul that you deserve to have all the good things your heart desires.” The Book of Life

Many predictions for 2012 are linked to the Apocalypse. While the word has many dark connotations, its literal meaning is, “the lifting of the veil …” that fellow’s name, but if I did I would thank him profusely for serving as a mind stretcher and helping me inscribe myself in The Book of Deservingness. Second Story I was presenting a seminar on prosperity when a woman raised her hand and posed this dilemma: “I am a Red Cross fundraiser. After a hurricane or flood I swing into action and raise millions of dollars in a short time to aid the victims. Meanwhile I’m struggling with my own finances and I have a hard time paying my rent and other bills each month. Why is that?” I thought about her situation and told her, “When you know that you deserve to have your rent and bills paid as confidently as you know that the disaster victims deserve to have their needs met, you will raise the funds for your own important needs.”

“That seems like a lot to ask,” he answered shyly. I told Ted, “You have been saving people’s lives for 25 years. You’ve courageously burst into burning buildings and rescued adults, children, their pets, and possessions. Many people are more grateful to you than most other people in their lives. Don’t you think someone who has offered such service deserves to have three months in the sun — let alone the rest of your life?” “When you put it like that, it makes sense,” Ted replied. “I’ll stretch the one month to three,” he added.

Many of the predictions for 2012 are linked to the Apocalypse. While the word has many dark connotations, its literal meaning is, “the lifting of the veil,” the drawing aside of the curtain of illusion and the revelation of the greater truth. One of the most formidable illusions under which we have suffered is the illusion of unworthiness. That illusion is written nowhere in the Book of Deservingness. Perhaps we would all do well to take that volume from the shelf, dust it off, and give it a good read. You might just find your name in it. Join Alan for his life-transforming Mastery Training this summer, and on his weekly Hay House Radio show, Get Real. For more information visit: www.AlanCohen.com or call 808-572-0001.

Third Story My coaching client, Ted, has served as a firefighter for 25 years. Recently he told me he is retiring and would like to move with his wife from New Hampshire to Florida. The couple is tired of the cold New Hampshire winters and ready for some sunshine. “We’ve made an arrangement to rent a Florida home for a month this winter,” he told me. “We’d really like to stay for three months,” he admitted. “Then why don’t you stay for three months?” I had to ask. Way of the Luminous Warrior

”Making others wrong distracts us from the power we have to eliminate our own potential for being bullies and prevents us from accessing our creative, healing energy, which we can use to dream a better world”

Practicing fearlessness means that we first eliminate the poverty, terrorism, and war that rages inside us. We eliminate our addiction to being right and fix our perception of every problem within us before we actually attempt the problem itself. We tend to overlook the price of waging a battle and instead focus on how we can get a bigger chunk of the pie. We don’t like to think of ourselves as greedy; we’re just cautious, building up a nest egg so that we will never feel insecure again. Of course, we never reach this point because looking for security in marriage, the stock market, the workplace, real estate, or anything else material never quite manages to make us feel safe. Luminous warriors build collaborative relationships with others instead of trying to conquer them; consequently, we get much closer to finding common ground and solutions to our mutual problems. Instead of clinging to our belief that we won’t have enough or that we’ll be taken advantage of, we bravely extend trust and find win-win solutions. This seems naïve, of course, and part of us says that real life doesn’t work this way. But the most successful organisms in nature are the result of collaborations. Even the human body is the product of a dozen organs and many different kinds of tissues working together. We no longer have to buy into the false evidence that we have enemies we must continually battle and subdue. It’s this mentality that leads us to get into shouting matches with the driver who takes “our” parking space, or to insist that our partner deliberately didn’t unload the dishwasher in order to drive us crazy. Now we don’t have to extend total trust to every person we come across or deny the danger of letting criminals run loose in the world; however, we also don’t have to walk through life with a sword drawn, ready to vanquish the accidentally inconsiderate. As luminous warriors, we open our eyes so that we can see in others the capacity for peace, even if they aren’t expressing it. Some psychologists would say that we project our dark side (our shadows) onto others, creating adversaries in order to avoid looking into our own unhealed selves. Yet, making others wrong distracts us from the power we have to eliminate our potential for being bullies and prevents us from accessing our creative, healing energy, which we can use to dream a better world. When we practice fearlessness, we don’t have to create enemies or obsess about “bad guys” in order to feel reassured that we’re always righteous victims. It may seem strange that we would talk ourselves into feeling weak, but this works very well for us psychologically. If we see ourselves as victims, we excuse ourselves from any further sacrifices. When we perceive at the level of serpent or jaguar instead of hummingbird, we focus on our adversaries and all their crimes against us, thus forgetting to ask the powerful question, “What’s the opportunity for creating abundance and healing here?” At hummingbird, we try to find creative ways to negotiate with the people we disagree with and we don’t ignore our common ground because we become stuck in the belief that we’re the good guys. When we step beyond fear, violence, and death, we can embrace the way of the luminous warrior; we can wage peace, not war. Mahatma Gandhi is perhaps the finest example of a man who waged peace even in the face of violence, and he changed the course of history for one billion people. It cannot be so difficult to practice this for ourselves. Alberto Villoldo, PhD, is a best-selling author, a medical anthropologist and psychologist, and founder of The Four Winds Society. He instructs individuals throughout the world in the practice of energy medicine. For additional information visit www.TheFourWinds.com.

Enlightening Views By Patricia Spadaro

Creating Space for Stillness STILLNESS CREATES STRENGTH Does that seem like a paradox to you? It did to me the first time I encountered that concept, but that’s because I had long been convinced of this myth: Myth: Staying busy and constantly running to do more means I am strong—and successful. Truth: Stillness creates strength. And success is not defined by how much I can cram into a day. The adrenaline surge we get from moving at fast speeds can give us a high for a while, but movement alone will not keep us at our peak or, in the long run, make us happy. I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that hours of activity must be balanced with space for stillness. Why? Chronic busyness without taking time to renew yourself—your body, mind, and spirit—is like driving a car that’s almost out of gas and pretending the tank is full. You can push the petal to the metal for a few more miles, and even run on fumes for a bit, but then the engine sputters and spits—and splat, you’re stranded. (And when it comes to our bodies, it’s not always a simple matter of filling up the tank and we’re on the road again. If we push our bodies and minds too hard for too long and don’t balance work with rest and renewal, it may take a while to get up and running again.)

If you don’t welcome those moments of stillness, how can you hear the whispers of your soul, telling you of the endless possibilities that await you?

For Your Reflection on the Power of Stillness… • Have you experienced the paradox that stillness is what gives you more strength and power? How? • Think about your schedule for the coming week. How can you intentionally create interludes of stillness? (Quiet time alone, meditation, listening to calming music, playing an instrument, practicing yoga or Chi Gung, walking in nature, holding a sleeping infant in your arms, visiting a sacred place?) • How can you help your partner and the important people in your life make time for the stillness they need too? They will love you for giving them breathing room—and when you each take time to get in touch with your own sacred space in your own way, you will have more to offer each other when you come back together again.

A Moment Of Stillness Is Key To Sanity In A World Of Chaos. Patricia Spadaro is author of the award-winning book, Honor Yourself: The Inner Art of Giving and Receiving, an inspiring guide to giving your best gifts to your loved ones, your community, and the world by learning to honor your own needs, celebrate your unique voice, and let go of painful endings. Her books are available nationwide and have been translated into more than 20 languages around the world. Visit www.HowToHonorYourself.com.

Better to fill up your internal energy reserves before your tank is empty. And one of the best ways to do that is to simply be still. Not easy to do in these jam-packed days when our minds, bombarded by constant stimulation and pressure, are more like jumping beans or, as Eastern wisdom describes it, like monkeys who can’t sit still. The incessant chase and chatter won’t stop unless we realize what the great sages taught centuries ago: the stillness we most need and long for is stillness of mind. Constant mental cogitation, worrying, planning, questioning, analyzing, and then more worrying—these can tax our energy resources much more than we realize. There is a time for action and a time for stillness, a time to take in new ideas and a time to be quiet and listen to the voice of inner truth (by whatever name you call it) that speaks within you. That’s what the sages tell us. Take, for example, this advice from the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of wisdom: “Restlessness as an enduring condition brings misfortune.” And this from the Taoist master Chuang Tze: “Fortune and blessing gather where there is stillness.” Even the indefatigable Mother Teresa acknowledged that renewal is a prerequisite for strength. Like the “contemplatives and ascetics of all ages and religions” who sought solitude and silent communion, “we too are called to withdraw at certain intervals,” she said. For it is in those quiet moments we “accumulate the inward power which we distribute in action.”

Invite a Creative Pause into Your Day In the ebb and flow of your week, do you invite nurturing moments of stillness? Do you allow your mind to rest—without the demands and dictates of your lengthy todo list? Do give yourself permission to just be—to savor the moment and not worry about what you want to have happen in the future or are afraid will happen next? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to affirm each day with the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore: “There are tracts in my life that are bare and silent. They are the open spaces where my busy days had their light and air.” Taking time out to create open spaces for stillness is not just essential to staying sane; it’s the key that opens the door to your inner creativity. Tending to details and taking action are important, but to be really effective we need to insert a pause into our day. Those pauses for “light and air” are interludes where you can open to the inner promptings that are trying to bubble up from the wellspring deep within you.

The Golden Years of Life

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I have aged I’ve become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m. and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60’s and 70’s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important ones. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older. it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think, I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. ( If I feel like it) May Our Friendship Never Come Apart Especially When It”S Straight From The Heart ! of the

Quitter

Enlightening Views By Todd Patkin

Why Stopping These Twelve Habits Wil Make 2012 Your Best Year Yet! off the hook more often. B e l o w a re t h e t w e l v e suggestions for a happier and fulfilling lifestyle.

Give up on relationships

Overall, Americans are just plain exhausted—and it isn’t surprising. Society tells us (not very subtly, either) we need to perform to a certain standard, look a certain way, weigh a certain number, make a certain amount, and much more. Too bad that “perfect” lifestyle is impossible to achieve. Nobody can do it all, all of the time. So when you inevitably take on too much and allow one of the plates you’re juggling to drop, you end up disappointed, tired, and miserable. Case in point: How are your New Year’s resolutions faring? Chances are, they’ve already fallen by the wayside. The problem is you set yourself up for disappointment by having unrealistic and unsustainable expectations. Instead, you’ll be best served by making 2012 the year you stop doing things that aren’t adding to your happiness. Let’s face it—our lives are already packed full of responsibilities. Piling on even more just isn’t feasible—and it’s also a recipe for unhappiness. Instead, focus on prioritizing things that really matter, and on dropping dead weight that might be holding you back. I admit that “quitting” various successoriented behaviors and habits seems counterintuitive. After all, doing less goes directly against society’s recipe for building our best and most fulfilling lives. I also know from experience that more isn’t always better. For much of my life I was addicted to the pursuit of perfection. I constantly pushed myself to be the best. But when I was only thirty-six, my do-itall lifestyle imploded and I suffered a complete nervous breakdown. In the decade since my breakdown, most of my goals and priorities have shifted. I’ve learned you can be happier if you clear extraneous and unhealthy responsibilities; let yourself

The ones that aren’t working, that is. Whether a coworker who hands out backhanded compliments like candy or a “frenemy” who always tries to one-up your accomplishments, there are people in life who drain your energy and make your attitude dip into murky territory. No matter how much you may want to make these relationships work, forcing yourself to spend time with negative people won’t do you any favors. So clearly, you need to be around people who share your commitment to happiness if you want to be happier and avoid unnecessary stress. It’s okay—and actually healthy—to distance yourself from so-called ‘toxic’ individuals.

Stop being so nice

Start being real. Perhaps you’re one of those people who always blurts out what’s on your mind. If so, skip this piece of advice. However, it’s much more likely you swallow barbed comments or constructive criticism in favor of a more diplomatic response. You might even allow yourself to be taken advantage of from time to time in order to please another person. Guess what? It’s time to stop! Dishonest politeness doesn’t develop authentic relationships. Remember, having a smaller number of true friends is healthier than denying your own happiness in order to make everyone else like you. Usually, there is a polite way to say no or to let another know he or she is out of line without permanently burning bridges.

Stop working so hard

No, I’m not advocating you become a total slacker. What I’m saying is, find a balance. The fact is, every year we try to reach new heights in our careers. We say we’ll work harder, get a promotion, and earn a raise. However, everyone has physical and mental limits and no matter how good

your intentions are, overloading on work will cause your relationships, mindset, and even health to suffer. Living the life of a workaholic can still bury you in stress, anxiety, and depression. This year, really think about what a healthy balance looks like.

Lower the bar

This may come as a shock, but you probably expect too much from yourself. Whether the issue is your appearance, house, family, or job, you want to achieve as much perfection as is humanly possible. On top of that, you most likely focus on what you do wrong and rarely celebrate what you do right. Setting the bar impossibly high is a recipe for making yourself feel miserable. I used to expect nothing less than perfection out of myself, which was delusional! We’re all human, which means we’re going to make mistakes from time to time. That doesn’t mean we’re in any way unworthy or undeserving of love. In fact, learning to love myself and accept my flaws was at the core of my own happiness journey. This year, consciously lower your expectations to more realistic standards, celebrate your many successes, and stop beating yourself up so much.

Ignore the Joneses

Keeping up with the Joneses seems to be the American way of life. We’re constantly comparing ourselves to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even people whose lives we see displayed on reality TV. What am I doing wrong? I know Bob’s salary is the same as mine. How come he’s driving a new SUV and I can’t even scrape together a down payment? No matter what the situation is, thoughts like these only leave you feeling jealous, less-than, and unhappy. The most ironic part is, the friend whose life seems perfect on the outside probably doesn’t feel that way in the privacy of his own home. For years, I was the guy with a career and bank account that others would have killed to have, but the truth was, I was stressed out of my mind and unable to relax for even a second! Yes, it

will be hard to change your habitual thought processes. Understand the fundamental truth that ‘happy’ for you won’t look the same as it does for anyone else—and that’s okay! Focus primarily on your own feelings and fulfillment—don’t use another person’s life as a measuring stick to determine how good your own is.

Don’t focus on your spouse Conventional relationship wisdom tells you to focus on your spouse and put his or her needs first. To a point, that advice is accurate. As a partner in life and in love, you should be your spouse’s biggest supporter and coach. Just don’t allow tunnel vision to blind you to your own needs and responsibilities. While you should never take advantage of or ignore your partner, putting yourself second all the time can breed frustration and resentment. This year, stop focusing so much on your spouse. Look inward instead, and figure out what will make you happy. Remember, when you do things that make you happy, it’s good for your spouse too. Also, of course, ask yourself what you can do to improve yourself—and thus your marriage.

Stop giving so much

If you don’t, you’ll eventually run dry! The fact is, there are a lot of people in our lives who depend on us and who want our help, our time, our advice, etc. Especially if you care for those individuals, of course you’ll want to be accommodating. (Or perhaps you just have a hard time saying no!) For whatever reason, it can be all too easy to keep giving and giving to the point where there’s nothing left for you. If you are that person—if spending all your time and energy on others is the norm and doing something for yourself is extremely rare—watch it. Figure out what is important to you and what fulfills you, and prioritize those things more. Stop putting others and their needs first all the time! In order to be happy, know Continued On Page 25 *

Enlightening Views

By Linda M. Potter

Are You a Member An Interview with Jack Canfield Picture Jack Canfield, the charismatic coauthor of the Chicken Soup For the Soul book series and “America’s #1 Success Coach,” vroom-vrooming through the cosmos on a solid gold Harley; accompanied by a Gang of spiritual soul mates. Then picture yourself joining the Gang. It’s hard not to smile, or at least raise an eyebrow. But it’s more than just a whimsical image. It’s the inspiration for Canfield’s new book, a mostly factual, adventure-filled account of his personal spiritual journey and his subsequent awakening to his life’s purpose. Partnering with fellow Gang members such as William Gladstone and Barbara Marx Hubbard, Canfield uses the book to set the stage for the ride of a lifetime — the one we’re all invited to participate in, the one that ushers in a new age of global consciousness and Universal Humanity. What inspired you to write The Golden Motorcycle Gang book at this time? JC: When I was in graduate school at the University of Massachusetts, we had a guest lecturer who led us through a guided visualization to take us back to when we had chosen to become a teacher. Well, I went back to before I was born which kind of shocked me. And [in the visualization] there were a bunch of us, “souls” I guess, on summer vacation, floating through the universe and having a good time driving down the road on Harley Davidsons. (That’s where the book title comes from.) We looked down on Earth and there was a war going on. It was 1944, which is the year I was born, and I just had this sense that I had to go down and help. So I chose to be born and help out, and that’s been my life’s work. Afterwards I thought, wow, I’m not just a school teacher; I’m a teacher at a higher level and I have a bigger destiny to fulfill. Then I kind of forgot about it until 10-15 years later when I started meeting people that I had this certain vibrational resonance with. I realized they were doing the same work I was doing; they were here with that same purpose. Maybe they’re part of that “Golden Motorcycle Gang” and we’re reconnecting, I thought. I was having a beer one night with Bill Gladstone, a literary agent (and the co-author of the book) maybe 10 years ago, and told that story to him. He said, “That should be a book.” And I said, “That’s ridiculous, no one wants to hear that,” but he kept hounding me. Finally I said, “Bill, I just don’t have time.” “What if I were to interview you two hours every day for a week or two,”

he says, “and get all the stories. Then I’ll do the first draft and you can clean it up and make sure it’s accurate, fix the writing, or whatever.” That’s how the book came into being. The image of spiritual beings belonging to a motorcycle gang makes me grin a little, but also piques my curiosity. Guides, angels, ascended masters and others are more often portrayed as introspective beings wearing long white robes. Why do you think you’re getting visions of a “hog” Heaven?” (laughing) I’ve never been drawn to a community where we all wear white and bow down to a certain guru. I’ve studied with many and I’ve sat at the feet of many, but there’s always been this sense of independence in me. When 15 guys on Harleys go by wearing their Hell’s Angels jackets, I admire that sense of “we are who we are and we don’t care what you think about it.” Not that these are guys I’d necessarily want to go have a beer with, because I don’t really know how safe I’d feel! But that’s the kind of feeling I had during that visualization. We were just a bunch of men and women flying through space on motorcycles. They’re golden because it’s spiritual. In the book, you had more than one encounter with other people who had seen that same image of being in a gang of motorcyclists. Why do you think that same metaphor keeps showing up? JC: It’s hard to know what gets planted in consciousness. There’s a book by Dick Sutphen called, You Were Born Again to Be Together. In that book, he talks about groups of people who travel through time together like a family; it’s the idea that certain souls agree to go through eternity together and have different experiences. I think people in my “tribe” if you will, saw similar images. But I don’t know why. It seems like there are many people who have had transformative spiritual experiences of one type or another, but are hesitant to talk about it. Have you noticed this? JC: I see it all the time. When I do my groups, we talk about these things and people come out of the woodwork. I see bank presidents, corporate leaders, military people and policemen who’ve had near death experiences, visitations from angels, intercessions from higher powers and awakenings. But they’re afraid to talk about it because they don’t want to be seen as “woo woo.” But someone has to go first. A lot of

PAGE 12 • february, 2012 • IN LIGHT TIMES

people don’t know this side of me. I think I’m seen as kind of a famous person because of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Now they can see, here’s this normal guy who’s had these experiences. Maybe it will give them the courage to admit they have too. You founded the Transformational Leadership Council; its members are listed in the book. What is the purpose of this group and how has it influenced change? JC: It was founded out of my need to have a support group of people doing similar work. There were different associations, but there was no group for people who own transformational training companies. So I threw a threeday event at my house and for three days we had a discussion about whether or not we wanted to create a support group with each other. Well, 32 people were invited; 30 came; 29 people said yes. Now we’re at about 125 members. It’s morphed into also including transformational coaching company owners, transformational authors that we all read, transformational media people, and so on. The purpose is simply to support each other in becoming more conscious and sharing our techniques with each other. Did you feel like the 30 people in this original group were part of the Golden Motorcycle Gang? JC: I would say that 80% of them were. Yeah, I could feel that vibration. How do we know if we belong to The Gang? JC: If you feel you have a calling, a destiny to contribute to the transformation of the world into a more cooperative, loving, positive, socially just, environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling world, you’re probably part of the Golden Motorcycle Gang. I might have been in one “local chapter,” but it’s clear to me there’s more members than me and the little group I hang out with. I meet people who are locally well known but not on the national scene and I say, yeah, you’re part of the gang. I think it’s become a metaphor for anyone who wants to become a midwife to the evolution that wants to be occurring right now. What does this evolution look like to you? JC: What I get is that there’s something

bigger than us that’s evolving. We can tune into it through meditation, visualization, and so on. If you tune into it, you can cooperate with it and do your part. I think that so many people who are out there doing counseling, coaching, teaching meditation, doing yoga classes, NLP, EFT… are doing this work. Some people are very conscious about it because they’ve tapped into that calling, that awakening. Other people are more unconsciously doing it, but it’s a quickening I see all over the planet. In the book, Barbara Marx Hubbard presents you with five questions we can all ask ourselves to determine whether or not we’re part of the Golden Motorcycle Gang. Can you share those with us? JC: Barbara had an experience [during a full-life regression] of going to the Elysian Fields where in Greek mythology the Gods and demigods hung out. There she found Aristotle and Plato and people like that (probably in white robes!) and was asked these five questions: What do you know of the original plan? Are you aware there’s some destiny unfolding that you’re a part of? A lot of people will tell you they are. Do you have any memory of having volunteered to go to Earth at this particular time? I volunteered to come down here. I think a lot of people did. I read Life Before Life by Jim B. Tucker where he did 2000 questionnaires and a bunch of interviews with people who had, under hypnosis, direct memory of choosing to be born, what gender to be, what race to be, what kind of parents they wanted to have—coming in with a purpose. They’d met with a board of advisors if you will—guides who helped them clarify that purpose so that when they came down, they could fulfill it. Continued On Page 25 *

Who’s In Your Picture? If I were to take a photo of you right now, who would be in your picture? Would it be family? Friends? Business Associates? People you hang out with? Do these people invigorate and inspire you and see what’s right and beautiful with you and with the world? Or do they drain your energy and always seem to find something wrong with everything? Your picture probably has a combination of both types—those that support and those that drain your energy. We all do. But is your picture skewed more to the negative or the positive? And which group do you focus on? Who exactly is in your picture? Who would you like to be in your picture? Do you want angry, negative nay-sayers? Do you want inspired, prosperous, loving people? And which set makes you feel more spacious, positive, and joyous about life? The answers to these questions might seem obvious. “Yes, of course, I want positive, supportive people in my picture!” Yet, we often get so attached to the people, habits, and outcomes we are accustomed to that we don’t see the drain some of the people in our picture have on us. I find that often people are like potted plants. If you have ever had houseplants, you know what happens when you leave the plant in a container for too long. Yes, it starts to wither and die. Why? Because it becomes root bound and the dirt it lives in has become depleted of all its nutritive value. Do you ever feel like that? Like you’re being held back on every side—physically, mentally, and spiritually? Like you’re withering? When a plant begins to wither, you transplant it into a bigger pot with nutritive soil. The plant comes back almost immediately. It revitalizes because it is no longer constricted in an environment that inhibits its growth. When the elements that had surrounded the plant and sustained it in its early development could no longer support its continued growth, they had to be replaced and revitalized. And it’s a process that continues. Eventually, the plant will become root-bound in its new environment and again have to be replanted. It’s often like that with people. We look to the people who are around us for our emotional, spiritual, and professional nourishment. They are able to support us for a while, but then there comes a point where, like the potted plant, these friends, family members, co-workers, or spiritual guides can no longer support our continued growth. Sometimes it’s because they are in a consciousness of fear and anger. Sometimes it’s simply because they are taking a path different from our own. And sometimes it is because they are way ahead of us and w e ’ re n o t quite ready to step into such greatness. For whatever reason, we often have to change the people in our picture. We need to find people of like mind who will nurture and support us in our growth at a particular point of time. When we talk about spiritual growth, we recognize that the inner journey is a solo one. But the support of others can make it easier to achieve our transformation. The support of others helps shield us from the winds of pessimism that blow toward us by well-meaning—and not-so-well-meaning— friends and acquaintances.

support of the people I worked with, either through job promotions or in finding a higher-level position elsewhere. When they were not supportive, I left that picture entirely and found a new professional picture that buoyed me in my growth, that gave me a new pot with nutritive soil. The area of my picture where it is usually most painful to make changes is in my personal relationships. That’s where the closest emotional attachments are, and it often takes longer to see that those relationships are harmful. Sometimes I need to cut the people out of my picture entirely because they are so toxic for me. Often, I simply move the negative, nay-saying, critical people to the periphery of my picture, focusing on my own growth rather than their rootbound attitudes. And people sometimes leave my picture because our journeys take us down separate paths. We remain connected by love, respect and fond memories of mutual lessons learned, but are no longer in each other’s pictures. Who’s in your picture? Who do you want within your picture frame called life? It’s a choice we make daily and requires us to do the inner emotional and spiritual work that raises our vibration and attracts to us like-minded seekers. As we create individual pictures of love, joy, prosperity and good health, fill them with supportive, nurturing people, we create a mural of shared pictures that will eventually transform the world. Let us each do our part in creating a global picture of luminous life! The Great Truths of The Beauty of Love Life

and Beyond

n the day after Jack Benny’s death in December, 1974, a single long stemmed red rose was delivered to Mary Livingstone Benny, his wife of 48 years. When the blossoms continued to arrive, day after day, Mary called the florist to find out who sent them. “Quite a while before Jack passed away,” the florist told her, “He stopped in to send a bouquet. As he was leaving, he suddenly turned back and said, “If anything should happen to me, I want you to send Mary a single rose every day.” There was complete silence on Mary’s end of the line, and then weeping, she said, “Goodbye.” Subsequently, Mary learned that Jack had actually included a provision for the flowers in his will, one perfect red rose daily for the rest of her life.

The question is asked, “Is there anything more beautiful in life than a boy and a girl clasping clean hands and pure hearts in the path of marriage? Can there be anything more beautiful than young love?” And the answer is given. “Yes, there is a more beautiful thing. It is the spectacle of an old man and an old woman finishing their journey together on that path. Their hands are gnarled, but still clasped; their faces are seamed, but still radiant; their hearts are physically bowed and tired, but still strong with love and devotion for one another. Yes, there is a more beautiful thing than young love. Old love.” Author Unknown

Real

2012 Authenticity Definition:

1.True to one’s own personality, spirit or character; 2. not false or imitation, real, actual.

Webster Dictionary

It’s that time again to examine ourselves with a critical eye and figure out what we “should” do in 2012. This year we really are going to do it, right— to get thinner, fitter, richer, more organized…better. The way we approach the new year speaks volumes about our relentless (and exhausting) need to achieve, improve and do more. But what if this year, you realized better and more are nothing but illusions?

What if you resolved to quit worrying About becoming more anything in 2012; Except more yourself? So many live out our lives as slaves to the tyranny of “should”. Year after year we strive to become what others—parents, partners, experts, society—tell us we should be. And then, one day, we wake up and realize we never got to let go and just be our real selves. The irony is that many of the issues we try to ‘fix’ with our New Year’s resolutions—addictions, excess weight, financial problems—are often byproducts of inauthentic lives. We eat too much, drink too much or spend too much to try and cope with lives that aren’t really working for us.

lie to us, but our bodies hold the truth. Headaches, backaches, stomach problems, weight gain— all are ways our bodies let us know we are not honoring our true selves.

When we try to be something we’re not, we may find ourselves in situations we just don’t enjoy. For many years I was a corporate wife living in London. I frequently had to entertain clients and deeply disliked everything about it. I had horrible backaches and headaches, had cold hands and feet and always felt tired and depressed. One day I told my husband I couldn’t do it anymore. I was done. And when I moved to Nevada City, to the forest and nature, my aches and pains magically disappeared. My body was screaming at me that I had been in the wrong place. When I finally listened, my body showed me I was in the right place. I now feel good all the time. Your body is always talking to you: the knot in your stomach, the tenseness when you see a certain person, the fear or apprehension. The places that make you skip, play and sing are those places that make your heart soar. Your relationships will become richer and more meaningful. If you’re hiding something or faking feelings, you won’t really connect with others: romantic partners, friends or family members. What you say won’t resonate. The relationship will stagnate. When you live authentically, on the other hand, you challenge and inspire the others in your life and they challenge and inspire you. You both learn and grow.

When we focus on being authentic, on really getting to know and accept ourselves for who we are, most problems solve themselves. And sometimes we realize what we thought we had to have is no longer important.

Plus, you attract the right people. When true to yourself, when you are doing what inspires you and what you are passionate about, you will attract other people who are doing that also. The only way they can love you is if the real you shows up.

What happens when you make “Live with more authenticity” the 2012 resolution?

You’ll have a greater capacity for love. When we love ourselves as we are, we can love others as they are, too. Living with authenticity means we’re in touch with our emotions. We laugh and cry when we need to laugh and cry (rather than worry about how it looks or what we “should” be feeling).

Quite simply, you’ll be happier. When our actions line up with our beliefs and values, we feel more joy and peace. We love and accept ourselves. Life flows smoothly along instead of being one struggle after another. When we go against who we really are, we experience cognitive dissonance—a feeling of anxiety or internal conflict. Living a lie— whether you’re gay and in the closet, stuck in a bad marriage, or working at a job you hate—just feels bad. You’ll be healthier, too. Our minds can trick us or even PAGE 16 • february, 2012 • IN LIGHT TIMES

“When we can feel and accept our own emotions, we can relate to the emotional needs of others” according to Cote. “From this state of being flows compassion, understanding and the willingness to forgive. These are the raw ingredients of love”. You’ll be more intuitive (and willing to be guided by intuition). Authenticity and intuition go hand in hand. When you’re no longer lying to yourself and others, or desperately trying not to feel what you feel, you can more clearly hear the still small voice of your inner wisdom. Once you can hear that voice and learn to let it guide you, you will realize it’s okay to stop listening to outside authorities. You’ll make decisions that are right for YOU. Knowing who you are is the heart and soul of authenticity. It allows you to ignore outside influences and buck convention. When you know yourself well enough to say, “I am happier living alone,” you may have the courage and insight to turn down a marriage proposal from the perfect (on paper) partner. Or maybe you’ll say, “I need to work to be fulfilled and financially secure” rather than caving into pressure to quit our job to be a stay-at-home mom (or dad).

Feature Story There is a law of physics that you can’t make more of or take away from energy. We are all we need to be. We are perfect. In the end, love is all there is—and in love there is no big or small, it can’t be measured. That’s a human concept. We don’t have to lose 20 pounds or make a million dollars. Our only job is to show up in love. Living an authentic life means you’re less likely to be manipulated or used by others. It means not worrying about what the neighbors think. And know what? When at peace, you really don’t care what they think. You’ll become more powerful. Power is not about having power over anyone else. True power comes from being yourself. There is no one else exactly like you with your unique gifts and talents. You simply need to beam who you are out into the world. People will trust you. When you’re a truthsayer, you’ll become a trusted advisor to others. They know you’ll tell it like it is rather than blowing smoke. They’ll also know your word is your bond—they won’t doubt that you’ll keep their secrets, keep your promises and repay the loan. “Without trust, nothing would ever get done,” says Cote. “It allows us to marry, to have children, to build houses, to make business deals. Being a trustworthy person opens up all sorts of opportunities and, of course, allows us to build strong relationships.” You’ll bring out the best in others (instead of trying to control them). When living authentically, you trust the universe and your place in it. You don’t have the need to micromanage others, or bend them to your will, or put conditions on your love and approval. This allows the people inside your sphere of influence the space they need to breathe, to be themselves, to grow into what they’re meant to be. When you give someone this gift, it’s amazing what life can hold in store for them.

passions? What do we want to bring forth on our planet not only for ourselves but for all life?” All of this breeds success and happiness. In each present moment exist endless possibilities. Each of us is a spark of the Divine. We each have the ability to create. Creating is our birthright. Every moment we are creating. It is part of who we are and is not outside ourselves. The choice is if we are creating unconsciously or consciously. When we create unconsciously, we see ourselves as victims. When we create consciously and lovingly, we live in integrity. You’ll receive confirmation through signs and synchronicities. Astonishing things can happen when you stop listening to “the experts” and start letting intuition guide you. You’ll start getting messages in all sorts of (seemingly) random ways: people, animals, events, objects, songs will show up to mirror what’s going on in your life. These synchronicities serve as signs that you’re on the right path. Often, in fact, they’re actual signs. We are the ones who feel we have to improve, to achieve, to somehow earn the right to be loved by ourselves and others. Maybe we’re conditioned to believe that by abusive parents or by the society we grow up in. Whatever the reason, we picked up that burden and we can also lay it down. There is a law of physics that you can’t make more of or take away from energy. We are all we need to be. We are perfect. In the end, love is all there is—and in love there is no big or small, it can’t be measured. That’s a human concept. We don’t have to lose 20 pounds or make a million dollars. Our only job is to show up in love.

About 27 years ago I was living in London for the first time and a friend shared a touching story with me from her childhood. She was young and in a Catholic grade school. She brought home her report card to her mother. It was a terrible report card and the only positive thing about it was that she had a note about good table manners written in the place for comments.

Her mother read the report card, set it down and called the Ritz Hotel restaurant and made reservations for two. She told her daughter, ‘I think I need to take you to one of the finest restaurants in London so you can use your fine table manners! They went to lunch and afterward they were window shopping and her mother asked her what she would most like. It was a tube of red art paint. Now that she is grown, she is an amazing artist with work displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in London as well as other places.

You’ll attract “luck” into your life. Some might say the little girl in the story above got lucky in her career. However, her so-called luck was a natural result of being allowed to be who she was. Rather than being browbeaten for who she wasn’t (a great scholar) she was rewarded for who she was (a well-mannered child with a budding artist longing to break free). And even if you didn’t have such an open-hearted mother, if you can learn to embrace your true passions—even now, at whatever age you are—life will reveal its riches to you. When we follow that unique spark inside us, we find that walls turn into doors. Amazing opportunities open up in our lives. The right people appear at the right time. Everything flows easily and organically. On the other hand, when we’re (miserably) doing what we’re ‘supposed’ to do, luck won’t show up. Quite the opposite. It’s the universe whispering ever more insistently that you’re on the wrong path. You’ll become a conscious creator. Authenticity means living consciously. Rather than seeing ourselves as victims who passively let life happen to us, we pay attention to our beliefs, thoughts and actions. We weed out what does not belong there. We set clear intentions. We ask powerful questions such as, “What is our highest calling? What are our deepest

Authenticity. It’s one of those words that gets tossed around quite a bit these days. (In fact, it’s in danger of becoming a bit of a cliché.) Sure, we all think we’re authentic in our words and actions. But what does it actually mean? More to the point, what does an authentic life really look like? Take Your Cat for a Walk?

fter a long, hard day at work, wouldn’t it be a nice stress reliever to get outside and take a walk...with your cat? It sounds pretty strange but there are people out there who have a harness and leash made especially for their felines so that they don’t miss out on going outside and getting some exercise. Today, it’s recommended that cat parents make their cats indoor-only. There are way too many dangers of having a domestic cat roaming about and coming into contact with another animal (or who knows what else!) and getting hurt or picking up some kind of illness. But cats still need to log some exercise to stay healthy.

Cats Can Be Trained Cats can be trained to be on a leash, although it’s not the same type of training

that you would use on your dog. The keys to leash training a cat are patience and perseverance; the process is a lengthy one and it can take months to get your cat accustomed to the harness and leash (a collar and leash will not work on a cat because they could easily slip out of it). The training involves a number of steps that need to progress slowly and only when your cat is ready. It could take weeks for your cat just to get used to wearing a harness and leash around the house before you’re ready to practice outside (this is where patience comes into play). Your cat may also be very distracted by the harness or try to fight the leash, at which point it’s time to a break and go back to it later (this is where perseverance comes into play).

Some Cat Experts Beg to Differ Arguing against the concept of a cat needing to go outdoors for exercise, feline experts are adamant that you can give an indoor-only cat sufficient stimulation by playing games with them and providing them with entertaining toys and climbing stands. Moreover, dogs and cats don’t react in the same way when something scares them. What if there’s a noisy truck or a dog that decides to come over and investigate the situation while you’re on a walk? Your cat could try to flee, maybe hurting themselves or even you. PAGE 18 • february, 2012 • IN LIGHT TIMES

By Kim Salerno

It’s also debated that once you give your cat a taste for the outdoors, they might want to go outside all the time and dart for the door when it’s open. You could potentially have an escapee on your hands whenever you’re coming and going.

L eash Laws for Cats In addition to pet experts making a movement for house cats to be exclusively

indoor cats, now some towns are mandating it. For residents in New Orleans, Dallas, Green Bay, and Houston (and a couple dozen other municipalities around the US) if owners want their cats to go outdoors, they must be on a leash. Cats that are allowed to be “at large” may end up in neighbors’ yards leaving behind a mess or killing other wildlife, two big reasons that these cities have enacted the leash law.

It’s Up to You It’s not bizarre these days to walk around Central Park in NYC, or other areas

across the US, and see a couple of cats on a leash. Ultimately, the decision to take your cat for a walk is up to you. Even if your town has a leash law, you can always make the effort to play with your cat inside for exercise so that being outdoors isn’t necessary. If you do want to work with your cat on leash training, starting very early on in her life and getting her used to the concept could give you more of an advantage than starting when she’s older.

Cat Vocalization What Are They Really Saying? Some say that if humans could understand cat vocalization, they may either be a little more scared or intrigued by their feline friends. After all, does anyone really know what they’re thinking as they sit there watching you sleep? They really do have quite a large vocabulary but who knows if they are telling you off, telling you that they love you or letting you know that the vacuum sucked up their favorite toy? Experts suggest that cats are so complex that they communicate with you, other felines and other animals in very unique ways. Of course, in addition to their vocalization skills, they also communicate through a broad range of body postures as well. These are often easier to interpret than their meows are.

Purring

Nearly everyone who has had the privilege of hearing a cat purr knows that it generally translates to something good. However, contrary to what you may have been taught to believe, purrs are not always positive. This sounds that warms your heart is made when the feline breathes in and out with quick pauses occurring between breaths. The purr is created by a separation in the vocal folds caused by built up pressure. It is actually a very complex process and you should feel special if a cat directs this type of communication in your direction.

Coming in March Rescued pets profiles and pix — new every month!

Although purring is typically perceived as a sign of happiness or contentment, cats in pain will often purr when they are stressed as well, an act that remains a mystery.

Hissing

It’s no secret that hissing is a warning that you should take seriously; cat bites are not fun to deal with. (If you want to correct your cat’s biting behavior, here’s an excellent resource: http://catbehaviorsolutions.com/Ebook/index.html) There are different variations of hisses as well. If you startle or upset a cat, you will often be faced with a mouth open hiss. This is common if you invade their space. If a cat is extremely distraught or fearful, a scream is often released along with the hiss. When you hear cats fighting outside and low-pitched angry growls are present, this is another form of hiss.

Meow

Now for the most confusing vocalization of them all; the meow! No one will ever know what every meow means but if you are really in tune with your feline friend, you’ll begin to notice a pattern which will help you understand their needs. Cats don’t have only one generic meow. If you pay attention, you will discover that your cat will make a different sound for food, attention, boredom, if he wants outside, etc. Cats are highly intelligent creatures; they are trying to teach you what they want if you are observant. Just as humans train dogs through consistent repetition, cats train humans with their communication…not all people pick up on their daily lessons though. It is also interesting to note that cats rarely meow to one another; meows are reserved for their human companions! If you take the time to really get to know your cat, you will learn what exactly they are asking for, when they’re happy and when they are just plain frustrated. Easily Incorporate Fiber into Your Eating Habits

By Eugenia Martini-Jarrett

Most Americans eat a low fiber diet instead of a high fiber one. The average consumed is only about 10 to 13 grams of fiber a day. For great health, an adult needs 30 to 40 daily grams from fiber rich foods. Children also need approximately 15 – 25 daily grams daily. Fiber is vital for good health. It has been found by researchers and doctors around the world that many diseases may be helped and even cured through proper elimination via a healthy colon. Weight management has had amazing results when the fiber intake is increased to 30 - 40 grams daily. It is important to understand that there are two forms of fiber; Soluble and Insoluble, both of which are important for colon health. Always remember to have sufficient water intake, not only for your health but also to assist the fiber to be easily absorbed and integrated to maintain movement. Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance and dissolves in water. Oats, beans, bananas, some fruits and vegetable and psylluim are some of the soluble fibers . Insoluble fiber increases the bulk and movement through your digestive tract and elimination.

You can increase your intake of fiber easily without changing your diet drastically (unless of course you eat nothing but fast foods). Tips: • Add a tbsp. of flax seed or other seeds to your salads • Include a variety of raw vegetable into your salad • Add raisins and raw oats to your cereal • Snack on fiber rich fruits and nuts • Incorporate beans into your meals and hummus as a spread • Substitute Oat bran for a small portion of flour when baking • Add bran, ground oats or wheat germ to your hamburger patties and meat loaf • Use your imagination!

Benefits of Castor Oil

Treat the Person

Often in the everyday stream of things, we enjoy comfortable assumptions which allow us to float on the river of life. Sometimes facing reefs of regret or butting against the banks of negativity, we nonetheless continue on our voyage. We see that we cannot travel backwards upstream since that path existed in the past, yet our future most certainly contains steady waters as well as rocky rapids. When challenges of the body appear, we face the depths of our humanity when we no longer separate the journey from who we are. Our conscious self listens intently to our tangled fears and charts a course for health based on the maps of other navigators before us. The spirit within us waits for us to realize we function as a whole being, capable of riding the wave of dis-ease and healing our body. Treating the Patient My wonderful physician once told me, no matter what my x-ray results showed, I am his patient, not the film. He reminded me he treats me and provides a means for my body to heal itself — his treatment and my participation merely clears the path for healing to occur. For many years, science and psychology searched for the body/mind connection. Just as the heredity/environment question, no concrete answers dominate the discussion. Speculation further poses the question of just where and how does healing occur?

Not the Disease By Marlene Buffa

Those charming sugar pills The placebo-effect, long known in the medical world, illustrates the mysterious mind/body affiliation quite well. Believing the drug we ingest will provide an elixir for health, the benign placebo yields no medical miracles. The true healing occurs when our mind believes in healing and health. When we look further into examples of people heroically overcoming physical challenges, the common denominator is not a placebo, but a solid belief in health, rather than the battle of overcoming the imposition of disease. Sowing the seeds of health When we focus on health, rather than challenges, the Universe provides us with a healing which confounds modern medicine. The attitude shifs from “fighting cancer” to visualizing and embracing abundant health, providing the spark of wellness offered by no miracle drug. As the movie The Secret expounds, whatever you give your attention to, increases in your life. When you pay attention to “fighting” a disease, the disease receives the energy of your intention, and actually grows. Shifting your focus to abundant health and well-being brings about a healing and wholeness only your spirit understands. After twenty years of heart disease, my father faced a final challenge. His physician did some sort of heart x-ray diagnosis and told us the results. My father’s heart was almost completely blocked, despite a quadruple bypass 10 years earlier. But, instead of failing completely, his body “grew” tiny corpuscles to carry the blood flow around the heart to perform the necessary function. When the cardiologist pointed out the tiny threads of life, I asked, “How did that happen?” He responded, “Some people really want to live.”

My father’s case is a perfect example of allowing the body to take care of itself. He didn’t know the grave condition his heart suffered, therefore he gave no energy to the blockages. Instead, he concentrated on feeling better and continuing to live. Sadly, soon after the “terminal” news impacted him, my father gave up his unknowing, and began to concentrate on how little functionality he retained. Dreading the inevitable open-heart surgery, he told me, “I will not survive another operation.” He was right. He died in the elevator on the way to the operating room. Modern Medicine While advancements in modern medicine provide us with amazing prevention and recovery results, the true healing lies within. Ancient practices of acupuncture for instance, clear the obstacles that prevent the body from healing itself. As we grow more self-aware and in tune with ourselves and our power, we harness the energy to maintain perfect health — with or without the aid of the medical community. Healing the body and working with others to heal themselves is a high calling in life. Overcoming not only the mind/body conundrum, but the fear and doubt that we contain within us — the power to heal, remains one of humankind’s greatest challenges.

Mercury in Your Mouth

Is A Deadly Poison

Mercury Sensitivity Self-Test This Mercury Sensitivity Self-Test was part of a US FDA approved study to assess how body burden of mercury is determined, toxicity levels, etc. It serves as an alert to clinicians when patients have scores of “Yes” in 5 or more of the 30 questions. It is recommended that such patients be referred to dentists with special knowledge of safe mercury silver amalgam removal and replacement. 1.

Have you had sore gums (gingivitis) often over the years?

2.

Have you had mental symptoms such as confusion or forgetfulness?

3.

Has severe depression been a frequent problem?

The debate is with the American Dental Association’s position is that mercury fillings are not a major source of mercury in the body. If you break a thermometer, government guidelines recommend the room be sealed until Hazardous Materials experts can decontaminate the scene. Yet 80% of Americans have more mercury in their mouth than a thermometer. You may be one of them. According to research by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), every time you chew, drink, or brush your teeth, toxic mercury vapors and particles enter your body. When introduced to the body, it goes mainly to organs like the brain, kidneys, liver and nerve cells where it hides relatively undetected; slowly poisoning the system

4.

Has ringing in the ears (tinnitus) been present?

5.

Have TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) problems been a concern of yours?

6.

Have you had unusual shakiness (tremors) of your hands or arms or twitching of other muscles?

7.

Do you have “brown spots” or “age spots” under your eyes or elsewhere in the skin of your body?

8.

Over the years there has been concern as to the safety of mercury amalgam fillings. An “amalgam” is a blend of 50% elemental mercury blended with a 50% balance of copper, silver, tin and zinc. Dentists have used this blended metal to fill teeth for more than 100 years. The controversy is due to claims that the exposure to the vapor and minute particles from the mercury can cause a variety of health problems. We follow the standards and protocols of IAOMT.

Have you tended to have more colds, flu, and other examples of infectious diseases than “normal”?

9.

Have you had food allergies or intolerances?

10.

Have you been to many doctors for your health problems and they have usually said, “There is nothing wrong”?

11.

Do you have numbness or burning sensations in your mouth or gums?

12.

Do you have numbness or unexplained tingling in your arms or legs?

13.

Have you developed difficulty in walking (ataxia) over the years?

14.

Do you have 10 or more “silver” fillings?

15.

Do you often have a “metallic” taste in your mouth?

16.

Have you ever worked as a painter or in manufacturing/ chemical or pesticide/fungicide factories (fungicides with methyl mercury ingredients) or in pulp/paper mills that used mercury?

17.

Dr. Tom McGuire, DDS, in his book, The Poison in Your Teeth, provides compelling evidence that Mercury is a poison, more toxic than lead or arsenic.

Safe Removal of Mercury (Silver) Amalgam Fillings The good news is that there are several available alternatives to mercury. In today’s world of dentistry, mercury fillings can be replaced safely with special white composite fillings. In laboratory tests, these new state-of-the-art fillings strengthened teeth 7 to 8 times and are very beneficial. If you have a mouth full of mercury, the removal process could expose you to more mercury than leaving them in unless it is done by an experienced holistic dentist who is trained and follows the protocols of IAOMT for safe mercury removal. In many cases, health returns when the consistent mercury exposure is ended. Can Removing Mercury Fillings Improve Your Health? If you’re suffering from health problems, a recent survey is encouraging. Out of 1,569 participants in the survey, the majority were cured or had improved health after the mercury was removed, as reported by Dr. Tom McGuire in his book, The Poison in Your Teeth. See improved or eliminated symptoms below: • Allergy • Blood Pressure • Dizziness • Headaches • Intestinal Problems • Lack of Energy • Multiple Sclerosis • Numbness Anywhere

Re-Examine Your Relationship With Food For many of us, the start of a new year usually means the start of a new diet. We are bombarded with ads promoting diet programs guaranteed to help shed unwanted pounds. And, they all work. But for how long? One of the reasons that the weight-loss industry is so profitable is that we keep coming back for more. Why is it that we just can’t seem to keep that long-term commitment with weight-loss? Although many of these diet or weight loss programs have the basics right: better choices, fewer calories, more exercise, one of the reasons we seem to always be drawn to old patterns is that these programs never really address the emotional issues behind why we are constantly battling the bulge. Every one of us has an intimate and emotional bond with the foods we eat. It may be healthy or dysfunctional, but make no mistake, this significant, long-term relationship impacts the choices you make when it comes to food. Understanding how you relate to food is often the lynchpin to losing unwanted pounds and keeping them off. Consider how the following typical food associations might be affecting your eating habits: The Association: Comfort Probably the best-known association to food is that it is a source of comfort. The reason that certain foods like chicken soup, macaroni and cheese and apple pie are called “comfort foods” is that when we eat them we feel a sense of calm that goes beyond the taste. During times of emotional stress and unease, we tend to turn to these foods instinctively for comfort because these foods usually have pleasant associations from childhood. However, when we blindly over-eat these favorites in order to feel better it can be a big problem. This is known as emotional eating. The Association: Connection Some foods we eat are all about connection with important people in our lives. If you are feeling disconnected from loved ones because of a change in your life circumstances or loss, seeking out these types of foods may temporarily help you to feel a

sense of connection, but will expand your waistline. The Association: Identity The biggest issue most people have when it comes to food is about how we see and define ourselves. For example, you may want to lose weight and feel better about yourself, but when you start to perceive the changes in your figure and the way the world views you, you may become uncomfortable with the “new you.” This discomfort may lead you to instinctively head back to old patterns of eating in order to recognize yourself and feel safe in your old identity. The Solution: If any of these ring true, you can decide to change your relationship with food and eating habits in order to get the satisfaction without getting the extra pounds. One thing that all these associations have in common is that they are about the past: previous experiences of comfort, prior connections with others and a past relationship with yourself. Instead of eating out of emotional need, consider creating. Using your innate creativity to strengthen the emotional bonds that may feel worn can give you a new way of feeling emotionally sated so you are less likely to turn to familiar and unhealthy foods to fill the void. There are so many ways you can be creative that will give you a healthy emotional outlet instead of turning to food during times of stress. If you are feeling emotional unease because of a change of circumstances or location, consider writing, drawing or taking

photographs to express yourself. If you are experiencing pain of loss, consider developing something new to soothe your pain. If you feel lonely or sad you can go out into the garden and plant something, or just pull weeds for a time. Keep a large box of crayons in your house with a large pad of paper and just “play” on paper. Get a journal and write down your feelings instead of turning to the refrigerator. Go outside for a walk. It is well known that exercise can help to combat feelings of anxiety and depression. You also get muchneed Vitamin D by being outside and that too, will improve your mood. Consider making a collage of photos and memorabilia. If what you create is edible, give it to a friend or to others in need. That way, you form a new connection and transform the negative feelings into a positive experience. If the association that you are struggling with is about identity, consider painting a picture or writing a story about the new you. Getting to know this person in your mind’s eye before you take her out on the streets will help you gain more comfort

By Ben Michaelis, Ph.D.

with the change in identity and will reduce your impulse to run back to the kitchen for sweets. It’s time to walk down a different street and start a new relationship with food. By understanding how you relate to food and how you feel about what you eat, you can make better choices and feel good about yourself. This will put you well on your way down a new path to a healthy relationship with food and a healthy you.

Mercury Sensitivity Self-Test Results … How did you do? If you answered “YES” to four (4) or less questions Your answers indicate you may be experiencing no ill effects from mercury toxicity. You might want to note that it is still a good idea to see a mercuryfree, biological, or holistic dentist to ensure that your exposure to mercury and toxic metals is minimized from an amalgam/filling perspective. If you have answered “YES” to five (5) questions It is important for those who have scores of ‘yes’ in five or more of the questions to be referred to a mercury-free/biological dentist who has special knowledge of the safe removal of mercury amalgam fillings and replacement with a non-toxic filling material. If you have answered “YES” to more than 6 and less than 15 questions Your answers indicate that you may be experiencing significant symptoms indicative of mercury/heavy metals toxicity. It would be very helpful for you to see a mercury-free, biological, or holistic dentist to ensure that your exposure to mercury and toxic metals is minimized from an amalgam/ filling perspective. If you have answered “YES” to 16 or more questions IMPORTANT!!!! Your answers indicate a possibly SEVERE exposure of mercury/heavy metals toxicity. It would be very helpful for you to see a mercury-free, biological, or holistic dentist to ensure that your exposure to mercury and toxic metals is minimized from an amalgam/filling perspective.

Year of the Quitter

your strengths, and play to them on a regular basis. You can’t live your life primarily to please other people.

found in the everyday moments, not in the big blowout trips. Kids themselves are perceptive—they can tell if they always take second place in your life.

Stop pushing your kids so hard

Doing ‘normal’ things with your kids on a regular basis will mean more to them than the occasional extraordinary event. So build regular ‘parent time’ into your schedule, and be present for as many day-to-day activities as you can. But don’t throw so-called quality time out the window, either. For example, you might set up a special night one or two times a month with each of your children—just you and them. Make some good memories.

As parents, we really care about our kids, and want them to have the best possible futures. But that doesn’t mean you need to turn into a so-called “Tiger Parent.” Too much pressure to perform can cause children to burn out and make self-destructive decisions. In fact, some kids are experiencing symptoms ranging from stomachaches to severe depression due to the day-to-day stress they encounter at school and at home. Your kids will be much happier, healthier, more creative, and more motivated throughout their lives if you prioritize balance and love them for who they are, not for how many “As” they get on their report cards.

Forget quality time with your kids

Start focusing on quantity! It’s easy to use the words “quality time with my kids” as a free pass to focus on other aspects of your life 95% of the time. In other words, we want to believe we can make up for working 70-hour weeks by taking a trip to Disney World, or catch up on all the week’s events while going out for ice cream. The fact is, life is

Cancel your gym membership

No, it isn’t saying you should give up on exercising, and of course, if you’re already a gym lover, continue going. However, for newbie’s, start with something sustainable. The truth is, many Americans purchase gym memberships, only to find their grand plans to take classes, work out daily, and lose weight, don’t pan out. Usually, sooner rather than later, real life gets in the way, and not going to the gym becomes just one more thing to beat yourself up about. The key to instilling any habit in life is to make it doable. So, if exercise isn’t already a regular part of your

life, start small. Take a 20-minute walk every other day around your neighborhood—that’s it! You can work up from there if you want. Also, try not to make physical activity all about weight—it has many other benefits. Exercise will make you feel more relaxed, stronger, and more capable of handling life’s challenges—also, it will improve your sleep, and it’s a natural anti-depressant that will help your attitude and outlook.

Stop obsessing over your health

Everywhere we look, there’s a new medical threat to worry about. If you allow yourself to fret over every health threat you hear on the news or see on the Internet, you’ll be afraid to leave your house without a hazmat suit on. Just eat right, go to the doctor, and fit in as much exercise and relaxation as you can.

Trash your goals

Except for this one; be happier! Much like striving for perfection, being too goal-oriented can harm more than it helps. When you’re always focused on the “next big thing,” you’re perpetually anxious, you often forget to live in the present, and you’re never able to enjoy all the blessings you already have. Plus, taking a step back from “the plan” can bring some much-needed clarity. You

may find the direction you’ve been headed isn’t what you want after all! My breakdown—at the time—was horrible. But it really was the best thing that ever happened to me in the long run, for it forced me to literally drop all of the things I’d been working on and re-evaluate how I was living my life. For the first time, I consciously realized my ‘successful’ life wasn’t making me happy. I promise you, when you prioritize your own happiness and well-being, you’ll be truly amazed by how smoothly everything else falls into place! Believe me, being a ‘quitter’ can be a very smart move, as long as you’re leaving behind activities, habits, people, and responsibilities that aren’t enriching your life. Above all else, as you move through this year, take it from me, a successful life without happiness really isn’t successful at all! Are

You a Member By Linda M. Potter

Interview with Jack Canfield The third question is, if so, do you remember your contract? JC: Do you remember what you agreed to do? For example, I agreed to help bring about a world that was more peaceful and harmonious and where people were living their highest vision rather than living their lowest vision out of fear. What do you do best in the world that only you can do? JC: What we’re all being called to do right now is authentically be ourselves; not Tony Robbins because he made a lot of money the way he did it, or Barbara Marx Hubbard, or some guru. But to really ask, what is it that I do that’s unique to me?

My wife, for example, I call her a day maker—she makes people’s day. She leaves a message on your cell phone and it makes your day. She walks into the salon to get her hair done and everybody walks out happier because she was there. That’s her purpose. I have this belief that we’re all like cells in a body. Maybe you’re a brain cell and someone else is a pineal gland cell, and someone else is a liver cell, and someone else is a heart cell, and if we each fully be that, then all the body’s functions will work, and we’ll live. If you try to do something different, you end up being a cancer cell. What are you supposed to do now, and what tools and resources do you need to do it?

JC: We really have to tune in every day and say, what am I to do now? Today? This period of life? This month? This cycle? This season? And then go and find the tools, the resources and the people to be able to do that work. We should all be supporting each other in that. Can you talk a little about the Birth 2012 event on Dec. 22 that you’re helping to organize: how you plan to participate, how the rest of us can also take part? JC: There are a lot of events being created and maybe I’ll be on a stage somewhere, but I will definitely b e p a r t i c i p a t i n g . T h ro u g h t h e Transformational Leadership Council, we have a combined mailing list of over 12 million people and we’ll be promoting it, encouraging people to

really participate in a day of celebration, a day of intention, a day of how do we want to create this next chapter of our life? That day will be an ongoing day of celebrations, concerts, TV shows and such. Conscious evolution means evolution by choice, not chance.
