Karen’s Letter Santa is now taking a well earned rest and I would like to welcome you to 2014. This is now Le Beau’s 17th year in the business of taking great care of you! For those of you who have not been a client from the very beginning, let me give you a quick tour of our journey.

Le Beau was established by myself in 1997, a time when all my staff where older then me as I was only 24 years old. I had a 30sqm shop and 1 staff member. I am happy to say that we are now 15 staff strong and operate out of a 900 sqm property.

All my staff, except one, are now younger than me!

We have won a huge array of awards from business awards such as the 40 under 40 award and the Telstra business women of the year for innovation, through a large number of industry awards including national spa of the year, plus many service awards. Editors from the West Australian and other magazines are often asking us for information for their articles.

I am very proud of what we have accomplished in our 17 years, but it is incredibly important to note that none of this would have been possible without the great staff I had along with me on this journey.

We are all looking forward to another great year this year and taking care of all our beautiful existing guests and warmly welcoming all the new

Pregnancy Massage Massage during pregnancy has gained a lot in popularity within recent years.

Originally, it tended to be limited to groups of women who favoured alternative therapies. But now it is seen as a valid and useful means of reducing general pregnancy discomfort. Recently research and evidence have shown a scientific basis for its benefits, though pregnant women seemed to have known this for a very long time.

Who does pregnancy massage?

If you are thinking about having a pregnancy massage, it is important to find a qualified therapist who specializes in the field of ante-natal massage. Their qualifications and training is essential. At Le Beau we have, anti- natal trained therapists as well as physiotherapist and Remedial therapists What does it involve?

One of the most popular forms of pregnancy massage uses the principles based on Swedish massage techniques. This is because of its particular benefits in reducing muscle tension and improving blood flow and lymphatic drainage.

Some massage therapists use aromatherapy oils and burn incense to heighten the sensory experience. There is however, a range of oils which need to be avoided as they can prompt uterine contractions.

These include oregano, peppermint, thyme, basil, sage and rosemary. You may prefer the massage therapist uses non-

scented or very low scented oils.

How much skin you expose during your massage is entirely up to you. Some women are comfortable wearing very little clothing; others want to feel more covered. It is worth bearing in mind though, for you to get the most benefit from your massage, the therapist needs to be able to access as much of your skin surface area as possible.

What makes pregnancy massage different?

Ante-Natal massage differs from general massage because there can be some risks if particular pressure points are stimulated.

These are located within your wrists and ankles and massaging them can stimulate the uterus to start contracting. There also needs to be a level of sensitivity and gentleness extended by the therapist, which factors in the baby as well.

Some expectant couples book a massage therapist to give them both a massage and they find this is a good way of connecting and enhancing their emotional connectedness. You may find that your massage therapist is willing to show your partner some massage techniques you could try for yourselves.

If you feel the massage therapist is being too vigorous you need to say so. Ask them to be a little gentler and keep the lines of communication open between you both. This is what is termed a therapeutic relationship and it needs to be working for you both in order to gain maximum benefit.

Parabens a problem?

If you keep a close eye on beauty product packaging you may have noticed the phrase ‘paraben free’. Most people are aware that they are better off using a product that is free from parabens but they don’t actually know what they are and why we should choose to avoid them.

Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used as preservatives in cosmetics products to prevent microbial growth.

This as two actions. The first being that is prolongs the shelf life of products and ensure the viability of the product. There are many different types of parabens in products, with the most common being methylbuty or prophyl parabens.

Since 2004 studies have shown that parabens showed up in brest tumours. However this study did not prove or suggest that the parabens caused the tumours and what the paraben levels where in normal tissues. After further extensive research since this study, the consensus was that the parabens are used in such low levels that it is implausible that is would cause a tumour.

The other problem is that parabens have some oestrogen like activity and could therefore stimulate and oestrogen driven tumour. The oestrogen activity of parabens is at least 10 000 times less than the naturally occurring oestrogen in the body, so again is very unlikely to be causative.

However, parabens can cause irritation and sensitivity when used topically, though this is not common because of the low concentrations used.

But if you believe you are better off safe than sorry there is an ever increasing number of companies who are removing these parabens in response to consumer concern and the desire for a more natural based beauty routine.

Health Watch - Are salon products to be free of such chemicals. They have gone one step further for those who like certified organic products, as they have introduced a range that is free of all chemicals and is made up of 99% organic products, from the seed through to the packaging.

Amazingly enough, when I started doing this article I started looking at the products I had at home, especially the ones used by my children and was amazed to find that the QV wash I use as a daily wash for my kids still has parabens. I found this strange as so many physicians recommend this product, especially for people who suffer allergies, however parabens have been linked to causing allergies!

I was puzzled as I had always been lead to believe that is was a relatively ‘natural’ product free from ‘nasties’.

So whether you are avoiding parabens or okay with them it is still important to stay up to date on the latest scientific findings and make the best choices for you and your families health

Treatment Focus: Accent (Bipolar): Facial Tre The Accent system is the only RF System of its kind that is currently available in the market place. This is because the Accent System boasts dual hand pieces – a bipolar primarily used for skin tightening treatments – and a unipolar (or 3rd generation monopolar) one for a deep, controlled penetration depth by the RF energy for fat reduction and cellulite treatment.

Today we are only looking at the bipolar used for tightening. The bipolar penetrates less deeply than the unipolar into the tissue, where the controlled heating at the desired penetration depth is essential, and too deep penetration is avoided due to the sensitive nature of the area.

By applying the RF (radio frequency) this promotes controlled and pain free (for most people) heating of the skin in the treatment area with subsequent contraction of the collagen tissue and tightening of the skin.

How does it work?

Before the treatment, an anaesthetic cream may be applied to the skin depending on your pressure tolerance and sensitivity. Although most people do find that the treatment produces a ‘comfortable and warm’ sensation.

The area to be treated will be marked into grids with a special pencil and then lubricated with a thin layer of oil, at Le Beau we use Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil as recommended.

The next step is to take a reading of the temperature of the skin surface; this is done using a laser guide thermometer. This helps to regulate the heat administered to ensure that a uniform delivery if the RF energy is being maintained based on a uniform skin surface temperature throughout the treatment.

Both RF energies are delivered to the skins surface with continuous contact being delivered by proven cooling tips (TEC Sapphire), which provides additional patient comfort

eatment for Tightening and Firming the Skin. and also protects the surface layer of the skin.

After the treatment the oil will be gently removed from the skin surface and the area dried. No after care cooling is required but you may wish to moisturise your skin afterwards. Most importantly you will be able to go about your daily routine immediately afterwards.

The Accent was awarded the CE Mark for cellulite reduction and the FDA approval for the treatment of wrinkles.

How long does it last?

Results are said to last anything from 6 months to 2 years. However for lasting results we recommend maintenance and this may be required more frequently for more mature people and those with poor skin quality as a result from sun exposure, smoking and alcohol consumption.

For body contouring applications, the improvement in the skin quality is said to be long lasting, similar to the facial tightening results, however this will be influenced by diet, exercise, calorie intake and lifestyle.

Fat cells have the capacity to expand 500 times their size, thus an unbalanced diet and unhealthy lifestyle plays a centre role in keeping the body contours in good shape more than any treatment can, however effective it may be.

What is positive thinking?

It is the mental attitude that expects good and favourable results. A positive mind is a healthy mind that anticipates happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome from every situation and action. Whatever the mind expects, it finds. But not everyone believes in positive thinking. However, this topic is definitely gaining popularity but many people still do not know what it really means!!! It is quite common to hear people say “Think poisitve” to someone who is down and worried.

Positive Attitude.

When we have a positive attitude we entertain pleasant feelings and constructive images and we see in our mind’s eye what we really want to happen. This brings brightness to the eyes, more energy and happiness.

2. Use positive words in your inner dialogue (talking to yourself ) and to others.

3. Smile a little more as this will help people think you are positive and makes you feel better.

4. Disregard any feelings of laziness or a desire to quit. If you persevere in your pursuit of this quest you will transform the way you think.

What do I do when I have negative thoughts?

Once a negative thought enters your head, you have to be aware of it and endeavour to replace it with a constructive one. The negative thought will try to enter again and then you have to replace it again with a positive one. Persistence will teach your mind, eventually, to only think of positive thoughts and ignore negative ones.

It does not matter what your circumstances are at the present moment. Think positive, expect only favourable results and situations and circumstances will change accordingly – give it time!
