I have a good relationship with Thabane- army boss By ‘Mantšali Phakoana MASERU-Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Commander, Lieutenant General Tlali Kamoli says his relationship with the former Prime Minster Dr. Thomas Motsoahae Thabane was cordial and he could not understand why he should fear him. Lt. General Kamoli said this when he delivered his testimony before the ongoing Southern African Development Community (SADC) Commission of Inquiry, led by Justice Mphaphi Phumaphi. He said this when he was asked why Dr. Thabane was so fearful of him He noted: “Even today we still have a proper relationship, if he could come in here, you would see a different story from what you have been told.” Army boss further indicated that when they are together with Dr. Thabane, peace and tranquility reigns between them. “He knows I respect him. He is my father and when I went to his office during his days as the Prime Minister, he always said he was lucky to have a General like me,” said Lt. Gen Kamoli. Asked why Dr. Thabane fears him, the Commander said he did

not know why he could be scared of him. “What I know is that Dr. Thabane does not fear me but there are people who fear me because they know what they have done,” he continued. However, Dr. Thabane together with the leader of Basotho National Party (BNP), Chief Thesele ‘Maseribane and the leader of the Reformed Congress of Lesotho (RCL), Keketso Rantšo fled the country in May this year saying they were running in fear for their lives because Lt. General Kamoli was targeting to eliminate them. Dr. Thabane had earlier explained that his fear in this country is of Lt. Gen Kamoli saying he had even told the current Prime Minister Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili that he would only come into the country if Lt. Gen Kamoli is removed from position of army Commander. Meanwhile, Lt. General Kamoli had reiterated that even before the 21st November last year when he left the country on leave of absence organized by SADC through the Facilitator and Deputy President of South Africa Ntate Ramaphosa, we had talks with Ntate Thabane and the first person he shook hands with when he arrived in the room we were sitting in, was me. Lieutenant General Kamoli was dismissed by the then Prime Minister, Dr. Thabane on the 29th August 2014 because of insubordination. However, Lieutenant General Kamoli who was replaced by Lieutenant General Maapankoe Mahao rejected the dismissal saying it was illegal. Explaining before the Commission of Inquiry why he did not vacate his position, Lieutenant General Kamoli said he had heard of his removal by the people who heard of it over one radio station that he was no longerthe LDF Commander. He explained: “Up until today, I never received any document or shown a case notice that perhaps maybe I should say why the Prime Minister

could not remove me.” Asked by the Commission whether he received the government gazette removing him, Lieutenant General Kamoli said he was shown the gazette at a later stage but there still was no instrument that operationalized it. Lieutenant General Kamoli insisted that when he went for the leave of absence with the then Commissioner of Police Khothatso Tšooana and the late Brigadier Mahao, he was still the Commander of LDF. “I left this country still the Commander with the understanding that it was for the government to be installed on the by Basotho as to who should be the Commander of LDF. I came after the elections where I was presented by the SADC Facilitator before the current government, in my capacity as Lieutenant General as well as the Army Commander, though I do not know where the other two were,” he said. Meanwhile, after Thabane lost the general elections in 28th February this year and after the seven parties cobbled up to form the coalition government, Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili became the Prime Minister and considered Lt. Gen Kamoli’s removal and Mahao’s appointment both illegal.

Therefore Lt. Gen Kamoli was reinstated by the government gazette dated 21 May 2015. When asked about the role of the army and how it relates with the society, Lt. Gen Kamoli said the army relates very well with the nation. “LDF is trying its best to relate to society, unfortunately there are those negative forces trying to portray bad impressions through media that LDF is not doing its best.” Meanwhile, putting his testimony before the Commission yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Mothejoa Metsing who was still the DPM in the previous coalition government said there had been serious tension between him and the then Prime Minister Dr. Thabane, caused by his frequent dismissals during his time as Prime Minister. “Surprisingly, he would not inform me as his major partner in the coalition government when he made any decisions or I could say he tried to tell me some of his decisions to dismiss some government officials but I disagreed with him. As a result, he made his decisions unilaterally, maybe considered me wasting his time,” said Metsing. He continued: “Similar incident occurred in January 2014 when I heard from the media that ntate Kamoli was to be dismissed. I approached him and asked him if he knew about it but he said it was not true.” “However, the former PM used to tell me that he was eager to see Ntate Maaparankoe as the Army Commander though I disagreed with him instead, I encouraged him to take him as his Adviser,” explained Metsing. Metsing appeared before the commission as the 5th witness after Prime Minister Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili, Minister of Defence Tšeliso, Lt. General Kamoli and Colonel Bulane Sechele.

CAADP’s implementation is country’s rethat implementing CAADP is a posponsibility- official litical will and is not technical emBy Majara Molupe MASERU- The coordinator of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) Dr. Augustin Wambo Yamdjeu says it is the responsibility of every country to ensure that CAADP is implemented. Dr. Wambo said this on Friday during a media briefing on the topic: walking the talk- Malabo Declaration. He said there is fairly low investment in the agricultural sector by the African Continent and this prompted African visionary leaders to come out with the Maputo Declaration in 2003 which was followed by the Malabo Declaration in 2014. Dr. Wambo explained that African leaders saw a need to uplift food security by themselves and they had decided to invest a minimum of 10% in the agricultural sector and to experience 6% growth of food every year as a result. The coordinator reiterated that the Malabo Declaration is building on the Maputo Declaration as they both talk about uplifting food security in Africa by the African Continent itself. “There is no contradiction about these Declarations. They both spell out how Africa is geared up to ensure food security,” he explained. “Malabo Declaration shows that African leaders re-affirm their commitment of ensuring food security,” he added. Dr. Wambo further pointed out

phasising that the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) could only advocate for countries to implement CAADP. “We can advocate and provide all what is necessary but it is the country’s responsibility to commit to the implementation of this programme,” he said. He went on to show that there should be a national collective effort that would ensure that CAADP is implemented and “that this has to come from within each country.” Meanwhile, Dr. Wambo explained that it is also important for the Continent to sensitise African farmers about Climate Change which is a growing global concern. He put emphasis on the fact that farmers have to be empowered on how to adapt to Climate Change and not to be scared of it. He said there is a lot of research sleeping on the shelves about Climate Change that has to be used by the African farmers. “Climate resilient crops have to be implemented. Africa has to do something with small-scale farmers to make them more resilient to Climate Change,” explained the Coordinator. Dr. Wambo was of the view that inclusion of small-scale farming should be on top of agenda in African Continent because it (small –scale farming) provides food for communities in the Continent. During the briefing, it also emerged that new technologies should be adopted to counter attack Climate Change.

Why Mafeteng excels in Cervical Cancer services

The district reveals its secret to make the hospital a welcoming place By Majara Molupe MAFETENG- Mafeteng District has been singled out as the only district in the country showing considerable development in the fight against Cervical Cancer, Informative can reveal. ’Mannini Masiu, a nurse at the hospital told this paper that ensuring quality health services is their priority, emphasising that they work as a team to ensure that health service needs are met. Masiu who works at Karabong department at Mafeteng hospital said their major weapon that makes them an outstanding hospital in terms of health service provision is a good rapport, which simply means nurse-patient relationship. She said when patients come to the hospital, through their team work, they give them smiles so that they relax and consequently become spiritually healed even before they get the medication. Masiu said at her department, they screen patients for all Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) saying it was where they discovered that 90% of patients living with HIV/ AIDS have Cervical Cancer. “We could have done far better than this had it be not because of lack of staff at the department and generally at the hospital,” she explained. However, the determined nurse

Mafeteng District Health Team

pointed out that despite their staff shortage, they also have the challenge of lack of equipment to help them extend their health tentacles into the district. Despite all these challenges, the nurse stood firm that they do comprehensive care for their patients, working as the District Health Team. Masiu explained to this paper that through their awareness campaigns and advocacy through the local radio station, that women should turn up for Cervical Cancer screening at the hospital which is offered freely, they had large numbers of

women coming to get the services. She further pointed out that to make their voices heard even in the remotest places in the district where the local radio does not reach, they organised pitsos for such communities so that that they too get the message about the disease. “Our alarm has been ringing at a thousand decibels in the district to sensitise the community about Cervical Cancer,” explained Masiu. She said they also visit schools in the district to sensitise both teachers and students that they should always visit health centres to get tested and

treated for the STIs. The nurse said in order to ease the burden on the district hospital, they had made it possible under the scant resources to ensure that Visual Inspection Acetic Acid (VIA) is done at some clinics. Meanwhile, ’Mampolokeng Kobile, a nurse at Mother and Child Health (MCH) said despite being a health professional, she is much more enthusiastic to deal with Cervical Cancer because her mother in 2000 had Cervical Cancer and was taken to Bloemfontein where she later died. Kobile shared the same sentiments with her colleague; Masiu that Basotho women should come for Cervical Cancer screening so that they can be tested and treated early for the disease. She said this disease is painless and appeals to women to come forward even if they feel they are not sick. “In 2009, we were trained by doctors from Malawi about dealing with cervical Cancer,” explained Kobile. “We test about 20- 120 females a month.” Kobile went on to show that as another step to spread the message to hard to reach places in the district, they trained Chiefs and Councillors who are able to interact with the communities in their respective villages.

WHO donates Cancer screening and treatment equipment to Lesotho

WHO representative Dr. Susan Tembo hands over Cancer treatment equipment to Dr. 'Molotsi Monyamane

By Majara Molupe MASERU-The World Health Organisation (WHO) handed over cancer screening and treatment equipment to Lesotho on Thursday last week at the Sankatana medical facility.

When handing over the equipment, Dr. Susan Tembo of WHO said Cervical Cancer was one of the most critical challenges to the health care system that has to be addressed through availability of equipment and supplies to ensure service delivery.

Dr. Tembo said Cervical Cancer was of public concern and needs to be addressed with urgency it deserves. “It is our hope that this investment will facilitate the scale up of the Cervical Cancer screening and treatment programme in the country

and thus this donation will go a long way in reducing the morbidity and mortality due to Cervical Cancer,” she said. Dr. Tembo explained that WHO was grateful to have been able to positively respond to the Ministry of Health’s call for support in carrying forward some key work that has brought them together, saying their support amongst others the finalisation of the training materials for Visual Inspection Acetic Acid (VIA) screening and Cryotherapy. Meanwhile, the Minister of Health Dr. ’Molotsi Monyamane said WHO is his ministry’s technical advisor that supports them all the time on health issues. “Investing money in health is very important,” said the Minister. Dr. Monyamane said it is their mandate as the Ministry to increase the immunisation rate and campaigns so that more children get vaccinated. He explained that Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Lesotho are on the increase saying his vision is to make available universal equitable health services in the country. The Minister pointed out that there were a lot of vehicles which are white elephants which have to be distributed to the community councils so that they are used to facilitate better provision of health services. Dr. Monyamane appealed to health professionals to work as a team towards improving Lesotho’s health sector.

LCN to go for talks on climate change in Paris By Majirata Latela MASERU- Lesotho Council of NGO’s (LCN) through its Agriculture, Environment Natural Commission (AENRC) held a workshop on the theme “Road to Paris- Climate Change Negotiations” for civil society organisations. The main objective of the workshop was to seek to raise awareness about United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Conference of Parties (COP) and to sensitise CSOs on COP and its issues. Opening the workshop, Kanono Thabane, Programmes director at LCN said they had recognised that climate change had a big impact on Africa so much so that we now experience droughts, intermittent rainfall patterns, flooding and reduced crop yields and grazing that are associated with these weather patterns. “So far, subjective evidence has shown that shifting disease patterns, especially in terms of crop disease, animal diseases, and malaria zones, have had a significant impact on development,” said Thabane. He pointed out that they had

realized that climate changes had brought huge problems to Lesotho with greater demand for land by farmers for household and commercial crops conflicting with a growing demand for grazing by pastoralists. “I wish to reiterate to the participants of this workshop that COSs in Africa have been involved from the start, pushing an agenda to reduce these impacts and calling for developed countries to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,” Thabane emphasised. Thabane showed that some reasons why COSs are participating in the UNFCCC negotiation are because they have enhanced multi – stake holder participation in the negotiations; they have enabled the framing of issues to be considered on the agenda and also they have enabled the public to follow the negotiations by translating science into simple language. He added that the CSOs also contact and consult with the negotiators in their home countries prior to the COPs and the LCN believes that it is one of the most important local strategies by the CSOs to target

delegates from their home country because of the mutual relationships that have been built which may determine the degree to which they can influence negotiator’s positions and in turn the negotiations. He related that on the road to COP21 they will discuss issues such as; the government of Lesotho’s need to prioritize climate change adaptation in the national priorities, linking it directly to vulnerable communities, which includes investing in climate justice issues and building the capacity of communities to understand and respond to climate change. “Ahead of COP21 in Paris, I wish that the deliberations of this workshop will emphasize to our negotiators the need to lead a front for a legally binding agreement on climate change that delivers fair, ambitious and strong climate actions at a level adequate to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. ’Mathabo Mahahabisa, Director Lesotho Meteorology Services explained that the world realized that developing countries do not emit a lot of the gases that damage the Ozone layer but they end up being affected by the changes that are brought about by climate change.

She indicated that due to this, countries have discussed that there should be a global fund that the developed countries will donate the money to, so as to help the developing countries to overcome the circumstances brought about by climate change. She mentioned that the validation workshop will help to reduce the emissions in the country; they had also found out that Lesotho being able to produce electricity from water will be beneficial for optimum water usage.. “I a m very happy that the NGO’s have taken their part in climate change and are working very hard to sensitize the community about the effects of climate change and how they can help reduce emissions, “said ’Mathabo. Mosuoe Lethaha from Climate Change indicated that people need first to recognise and admit that there is climate change, so that they can take action about it. “Countries need to be helped to do the adaptation process so as to help change the way developing countries suffer due to emissions by the developed countries, as they do not have enough technologies and capacity to overcome the problem of climate change,” said Lethaha.

Local Motati Primary School wins international competition By Majirata Latela MASERU- Five childeren from Motati Primary School in Leribe, who have won a competition between four international schools from countries that are part of the Orange Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM), were lauded by Lenka Thamae of ORASECOM, last week. The four international Primary schools which took part in the Orange Senqu River Learning Box (OSRLB) competition were from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa and the competition was held in Centurion South Africa. Speaking at the congratulatory event in Maseru on 10th September 2015, Executive Secretary of ORASECOM, Lenka Thamae said the theme for the day was “Celebrate the Water Champions” as the children were now the water champions after winning the competition. He said that the Orange River Learning Commission was established in 2008 with the objective that school children between the ages of 10- 12 learn to understand and promote sustainable water resources development and management in the Basin. He pointed out that in 2011 they came up with the river learning box which was a project to provide educational resource materials and to collect newsletters, messages, any sort of writing that was talking about water. “In 2014 they came up with a debate between the school children of the same age which started first with competitions between local schools, with the winning team entering the international competi-

tion,” said Thamae. For his part, the Minister of Education and Training Dr Mahali Phamotse pointed out that they are very pleased to have children who can understand and relate to the resources like they did when they presented. “I have been to science fairs and debates from many local schools but I have not seen such talent in Lesotho,” Dr Phamotse said. She said that water was Lesotho’s diamond and the Department of Education and Training together with the Department of Water will include in their programmes of education the programme of water which will outline the importance of water and how to protect it so as to bring us success. “The first champion of water

was Ntate Lenka for being the executive secretary of ORASECOM and now Motati Primary School has produced the small champions and this is a good thing because the source of Senqu is in our country,” a delighted Phamotse said. Minister of Water, Ralechate ‘Mokose said the ministry had realized that education about water resources was very important and it was essential to be involved in it for sustainability and economic reasons. “We sat down together to bring these kind of results you have seen today and we hope to make a success out of the good work the kids have displayed and the talent we see in the kids should be nurtured” said ‘Mokose.

He highlighted that the reason for the competition was to instil understanding in the children on the importance of water for human beings and that a natural part of it is in the Orange- Senqu River Basin. ’Mokose added in that in Lesotho they had selected four schools with the help of the Department of Education to enter the competition, and decided that Motati should go and represent Lesotho on the 25 August 2015. “We are very happy and would like to thank the kids and the teachers as well as parents for bringing victory to Lesotho, and we are thankful for the gift that God has given us I would like to call you The Ambassadors of water from now on.” concluded a beaming ’Mokose.

MAFETENG- Sahae Senatla, a young man living on the outskirts of Mafeteng, the most drought-stricken district in the country, says he uses varieties of seeds to counter attack Climate Change which has become a growing concern globally in recent years. Senatla said he was raised by parents who were deeply involved in farming initiatives and who paid his schooling expenses with the revenue accrued from the sale of crops, maize and sorghum. He explained that farming had been instilled in him when he was young and he grew up loving it for he realised that his parents took care of the family with the sale of crops. “When l grew up, my father was a farmer and did not have any means of survival other than farming. He paid the school fees of all his children with the money accrued from the sale of crops,” revealed Senatla. He pointed out that they used to produce metric tonnes of crops in the past but their productivity decreased due to challenges that included Climate Change. However, this farmer said they did not give up farming when things got out of hand instead; they had to devise means to overcome the problem of Climate Change. “We start tilling our soils in winter after harvesting to ensure that any showers that may be experienced in winter be kept as moisture so that when the ploughing time arrives, we start ploughing,” he explained. Having realised the consequences of Climate Change which impact-

ed adversely on the production of food, Senatla said they changed their ploughing times and began to plough in October until January the following year. “We do this so that our crops should not experience the bad consequences of Climate Change at the same time,” explained Senatla. Meanwhile, this farmer said they also had to use varieties of seeds to identify the ones that would best suit them. “We use both tractors and ox-

drawn ploughs to do the ploughing,” he said. Senatla said they have restored their production capacity after adopting the use of varieties of seeds because they are now able to produce between 100-120 50 kgs of maize a year. He also revealed that as soon as their plants have grown, he uses insecticides to protect his plants against their invaders. “We also hoe the weeds before they can prevent the plants from

growing up properly. This has worked properly for us over the years,” said Senatla. Since he ploughs large tracts of land, this determined farmer said he uses a combine-harvester to harvest his crops because it is faster and saves time. However, he told this paper that he is anxious to change his ploughing system from that of subsistence to commercial farming but has a challenge of reliable market. “I sell my produce but in small units. I want to sell in large quantities but l do not have a reliable market,” explained Senatla. He firmly told Informative that youth since they are able- bodied should at the forefront of fighting hunger, as per Malabo Declaration; hunger and poverty would be a thing of the past. The Malabo Declaration has it that youth and women must participate and directly benefit from the growth and transformation opportunities to improve their lives and livelihoods. The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) through its program, the Comprehensive Africa’s Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) is working hard to ensure that the Malabo Declaration is implemented in different African states for the benefit of the whole continent. This paper understands that Senatla is acting in accordance with the advice from the senior crop production officer from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Sekhonyana Mahase who keeps on advising the farmers that they should adopt short-term growing varieties of seeds to counter-attack Climate Change.

Press Release Press Release FAO supports Lesotho Government’s efforts to protect natural resources and food security FAO, MAFS and MFRSC conduct training on Rangeland Policy and Conservation Agriculture for chiefs and local authorities from Maseru district. Maseru, 9th September 2015 – Conservation Agriculture (CA) is proven to be one of the best technologies and strategies to combat the negative effects of land degradation, which has led to a dramatic decline in agricultural production in Lesotho. Furthermore, rangelands which are not properly managed by users decrease their feeding potential and progressively deteriorate. Spreading CA practice and Rangeland management are therefore keys in attaining Lesotho’s food security. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), the Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation (MFRSC) and FAO Lesotho work hand in hand to increase the understanding and appreciation of the benefits of Conservation Agriculture as well as the adoption of the Rangeland Policy at community level. Two rounds of training for 80

chiefs and local representatives from Maseru district are being conducted in September 2015. “Sustainable changes in the management of natural resources are only possible if they are embraced by communities and their leaders.” said Mr. Yves Klompenhouwer, FAO Representative a.i. in Lesotho. “Therefore, we support the government’s initiative to train local government representatives and traditional leaders. Substantial impact can only be achieved by working together.” Klompenhouwer added. The content of the training focused on the Rangeland policy and the principles, benefits and practices of Conservation Agriculture. These two topics are in fact closely related since livestock feeding needs often challenge CA farmers as they try to keep crop residues and live mulch in their CA fields, a principle aiming at protecting soil

from erosion and improving organic matter to enhance production. With better rangeland management and adoption of CA, both communities and animals will have access to better food while preserving natural resources.

This activity is funded by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

He concluded that as a company, they are duty bound to make Basotho aware that they should not use the competition as an investment, as it had come to n their notice that some people who do not win, call the offices claiming that they had lost a lot of money therefore they need to be given something or say they were cheated. He advised Basotho that this was a game of chance, so when they enter the competition, there was no need to use a lot of money. He advised people just to use the little that is left after using the air time on their phone, to try their luck so that they are happy if they win, rather than complaining that they were cheated. ‘’Vodacom Mega Millions is continuing and will offer two more cars on 26th September 2015 and three other cars on 10th October 2015 to the winners. The Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation Mathibeli Mokhothu said youth empowerment is a critical aspect the government has to invest in. “We are very grateful to the private sector for the initiative they are showing, especially MMB by taking its unique direction of helping in generating other businesses,” he said. The Minister mentioned that his ministry had put aside money amounting to 3 million Maluti for youth empowerment, and he also encouraged the youth to stop being job seekers and start being innovative and create jobs in the country. Managing Director of MMB Tom Mpedi stated that the two week business development training workshop will enable the youth to develop business proposals with the knowledge and skills they will acquire from the training. We have put aside one million maloti that will sponsor the youth with good business ideas with the much needed financial

resources to either start or enhance their business and the maximum amount that will be received by one company will be M100, 000, he said. “Out of the 700 applications we received only 31 companies made it to this workshop training. They will be trained on business managerial skills by experts from institutions of higher learning in Lesotho,” he concluded. Secretary General of the Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO Palesa Montši noted that the Kickstart Project would provide an answer to the adverse labour market conditions and limited employment opportunities in Lesotho. EU donates M120 million to Lesotho By Pulane Lichaba

MASERU- European Union (EU) Ambassador H.E. Dr Michael Doyle jointly with the Minister of Finance Dr Mamphono Khaketla and the Minister of Social Development Molahlehi Letlotlo signed a financing agreement between the EU and the government of Lesotho for phase III of EU support for social protection in Lesotho. The signing of this financing agreement, in the framework of the 11th European Development Fund (2014-2020) marks another milestone in what has been a longstanding and fruitful partnership in the vital area of social protection. Addressing the media Dr Khaketla noted that the M120 million would focus on capacity building for the Ministry of Social Development and also the work of government in setting up a social protection system for the most economically and socially vulnerable segments of Lesotho’s population. “The EU assistance will help the government’s efforts to address poverty, deprivation, vulnerability and inequality in a comprehensive and holistic manner, “Dr Khaketla said. She also added that since 2008 the EU had invested a cumulative amount of M450 million in the sector of social protection in Lesotho. In his remarks Letlotlo indicated their acknowledgement towards EU and also United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) as they would be working closely with them in implementing the project. “Earlier this year we received donations from EU in the form of motorbikes and cars and we will forever be indebted to them for the love they have shown us,” he stated.

EU Ambassador Dr Michael Doyle and the Ministry of Finance Dr Mamphono Khaketla

Dr Doyle stated that the Phase III will help the government to consolidate National Information System for Social Assistance (NISSA), a registry to be used for the management and monitoring of all forms of social assistance. “This phase will also contribute to the strengthening of capacities at community level and thereby support a necessary pillar of a strong decentralized social protection system,” he noted. He continued that in 2008 the government of Lesotho and UNICEF entered into a tripartite agreement for the implementation of a pilot ini-

tiative to address the growing challenge of children orphaned or made vulnerable as a result of the HIV epidemic in Lesotho. It also included the design of Lesotho Child Grants Programme (CGP). “The objective of the CGP is to improve the living standards of Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVCs) to help reduce malnutrition and improve health status as well as to increase birth registration and school enrolment among OVCs,” he said. Dr Doyle recalled some of the milestones that had been reached

under the Social Protection programme in the last two years. “The CGP has now expanded into a national programme fully owned and funded by the Ministry of Social Development, starting from the pilot phase that reached 5000 children and is now directly benefiting about 75,000 children,” he noted. He concluded that the EU would continue working closely with all concerned stakeholders, including civil society to help ensure that Social Protection remains at the top of the government’s agenda for the benefit of all Basotho.

Agro Organic Farm promises to increases food security By Pulane Lichaba MASERU- Lerato Lesoetsa , Managing Director of Agro Organic Farms (AOF), says the youth should join hands and start businesses to eradicate poverty and the high unemployment rate in the country. AOF is one of the business enterprises that won Bacha Entrepreneurship Project courtesy of Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation, Standard Lesotho Bank and Lesotho Revenue Authority. In an interview with Informative, Lesoetsa said they had started the business as nine National University of Lesotho graduates holding degrees in Bachelor of Environmental Science and Bachelor of Chemical Technology.“Our aim is to bring into use our skills and knowledge to

bring real solutions to combat land degradation and to devise adaptive measures to climate change in our country” she said. “This enterprise originates from an organization called Friends of the Environment. As young people under the age of 25 we came together to ignite the spirit of environmental protection in the youth of this nation. She continued that AOF recycles food waste to make organic compost manure called Vermicompost. We have conducted laboratory experiments and confirmed that it’s superior to other organic manure such as cow waste, garden compost and chicken stools. “It also has a balanced nutrient content and suppresses the incidence of diseases in crops and contains de-

fense chemicals that repel fungi and bacteria. Also it has a higher water holding capacity and is therefore suitable for use even during dry seasons or drought. It also repairs soil and strengthens its structure,” she explained. Lesoetsa stated that they had won money amounting to M165, 575.00 in the Bacha Entrepreneur Project to start their farming business. “Winning funding for the project was exciting and scary at the same time because of the pressure that comes with it. It also gave us hope for the future, that we have an opportunity to bring change into our country and use our knowledge to impact economic growth in our nation,” she said. She also indicated that they had

encountered some challenges during the course of the project as they did not have any prior knowledge of the business management industry. “We had to draw a business plan and words like marketing and financial projections were new to us but we knew how much we needed this project and we really thank the tripartite companies for giving us this opportunity,” Lesoetsa said. Lesoetsa concluded that they are in the final stage of registering with Lesotho Revenue Authority and people are already placing orders for their product. She also encouraged the youth to go out there and explore and use effectively the rich resources that exist in the country instead of waiting to be absorbed by the government as jobs are very scarce in the country.

Miss Georgia Crowned Miss America 2016 Atlantic City

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is the new Miss America. Cantrell rode an opera performance to the title in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday night, besting 51 other competitors in the nationally televised pageant. The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back for the first time after resigning the crown following a nude photo scandal. Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell apologised to Williams on behalf of the pageant. “I want to apologise for anything that was said or done,” Haskell told Williams as they stood on the stage. “Vanessa: Welcome back!” For Williams, who went on to stardom on television and on the Broadway stage, it was a triumphant return to the Miss America stage. “I did the best I could in my reign as Miss America,” she said during Sunday’s pageant. Cantrell sang an opera number for her talent performance. She won a preliminary competition earlier in the week, also with an opera performance. Miss America 2016

According to R.Jay their group works as a movement that elevates society and builds social consciousness. He added that the music they produce is for all ages to enjoy and

The track has so far been performed live at Bochabela and still going to perform in Roma at an event coming soon according to R. Jay. In his view the group has not faced any challenges yet besides satisfaction as all is going according to plan. Individually the trio joined the music industry in 2013 and all managed to produce singles on their own. DJ Black Coffee booked for Coachella 2016 The world just loves DJ Black Coffee’s music. Black Coffee is on another level. The DJ, who enjoyed a successful international tour, has already been booked for 2016’s Coachella Music Festival in the United States. The musician revealed this on

Last year’s Miss America, Kira Kazantsev, was the third consecutive Miss New York to win the title. “I can’t believe it’s been a year since I was backstage getting ready to compete, just as the contestants are right now,” Kazantsev said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon in Boardwalk Hall. “

He added: “I think most musicians or artists they will always go for that saying, that ‘no, this one is different’. For me, I don’t know. An Interview: Retro Dizzy on their new album and some other stuff Cape Town Originally from Hermanus, surf rockers Retro Dizzy are now based in Cape Town and have recently released their second album, Creatures of the Black Desert. The band, who consist of Stuart Dods (bass, backing vocals), Nicolaas Rossouw (drums) and Richard Liefeldt (vocals, electric guitar), describe themselves as “a surf rock band with slivers of psych. Swimming in reverb and distortion. Black magic”. We got to ask bassist Stuart a few questions. Check it out here: First off the bat, I have to ask, where does your name come from? Basically, Uncle Dizzy is a legend in our hometown of Hermanus, he skates around and just lives his life and we can’t remember how we got on the Retro vibe but we like it and it’s staying. We wanted to name our band after something we could relate to from Hermanus. Tell us a bit more about how the band got together and how long you guys have been playing together. We got together the summer before 2014, just skating and surfing and then we decided to start a band. Richard our lead singer and guitarist used to play in bands and we all liked the same kind of music so yeah it pretty much just started in a garage and went from there. Your album Creatures of the Black Desert is very alternative and fresh, and I can hear it being played at beach parties or house

parties where everyone is just chilling and having a good time… Tell us a bit more about the album. What inspired the songs and how long did it take to put it all together? We left our small town of Hermanus, which was a desert in terms of music, and moved to Cape Town. At first we kind of felt very out of

place, which has changed now, everyone has been super rad to us. But that feeling of not knowing anyone made us feel like creatures, so you could say we are the creatures of the black desert. The songs are inspired by our own personal experiences, things we’ve gone through together. Be-

ing in a band can be a very different way of life and I guess the songs just represent that. Who writes the songs and who are your influences as a band? Stuart: Richard writes the lyrics but all the music is done by the band. Our influences range from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Night Beats to Black Lips. What do you guys do when you’re not making music? I do art and Richard and Nicolaas, our drummer, try to survive. Where did music start for you guys, do you have any professional training? Stuart: We’ve always had the love of music but no professional training. We’ve kind of learnt our instruments together through trial and error. What is the one thing no one knows about you? We used to be an all-girl rock band. What is the worst or funniest thing that has ever happened while on stage? When our friend, Andre Vlok, introduced us naked at Assembly for a Yoh event. I don’t even think he said Retro Dizzy. What’s next for Retro Dizzy? We heading on our 2nd great trek to JHB/PTA for a Bobbejaan event. And then we hitting Daisies this year playing Campsite Stage. And FACE OOZE. Source: Channel24

‘SA’s Got Talent’ winner releases first single

Some people who arrive in Johannesburg with a dream eventually end up leaving with nothing but nightmares. But Tholwana Mohale could be the exception to the rule. The 15-year-old drama student has finally released her debut single Hollywood Guy after winning SA’s Got Talent in November. Her introduction into the music industry, the song is an instant pop hit. Her powerful voice dominates the track, indicating that she is a significantly better vocalist than the song reveals. Adding to the authenticity of the song is that Mohale wrote the lyrics. But, she joked that her initial muse was no longer the object of her affection. “I had a crush on this guy at my old school so I wrote the song; but now it’s whatever, I don’t like him anymore. “Maybe the song is about another guy I have a crush on.” Having left her family at home in the Northern Cape, Mohale relocated to Johannesburg to record her album and to finish school. She said she had expected the National School of Arts to be like the popular film High School Musical, with spontaneous flash mobs and everyone singing in harmony. She said: “The first time I heard

my song on the radio, I cried. I realized what I’ve always dreamed about is coming true.” Her album will be released next year and Mohale hopes to be the creative brains behind most of the songs on the album. Source: City press

LNA hold one day Umpire Memorial basketball Tourney refresher course By Tšeliso Tale

By Tšeliso Tale MASERU-The Lesotho Netball Association on Saturday hosted a one day Umpire refresher course at CTC for ten Lesotho Level C Africa Umpires. Among the referee’s coaching points the course Instructor taught was the difference between Contact and Contest, which is the inter-action that takes place when the two players fight for ball possession on the netball court during the match. The participants learned the when and how the players can be charged for contact when they contest for the ball and they extend the bodies. The Umpires were provided with text books which illustrate with pictures, demonstrating the difference between Contact and Contest; but they were also allowed to make their own observations. Like in most sports codes men participants were dominant in numbers. In the 2015 Netball World Cup men Umpires were dominating while the World Netball Federation does not recognise men’s netball internationally and they can only compete continental not at world level. Lesotho Level C Africa referee’s are: Tumisang Masenkane of Mapholi, Motlalepula Sepamo, Tanki Motšoane of Lesotho Defense Force, Mosheoa Mohai, ‘Mahlompho Mokobocho, ‘Mapiti Mafeke, Neo Orper and Mohau Lekhoana all from Lesotho Correc-

tional Services (LCS), Mphutlane Lieto of Prince Stars Netball Club, ‘Mathaabe Majara of Thetsane High School and they all attended the One Day Refresher Workshop. ’Makhotso Mokoatle the association Vice President was also there but just as an observer, with Chakatsa Lephole coaching the participants. Chakatsa is the only A African Award Netball Umpire Instructor in Lesotho, International Talent Indentified (INID) and INF Africa has ever produced. He is also gets appointments to officiate in the inter Tailor and he has been invited to Umpire national tournaments all over Africa and he is a very prescient and soft speaking gentleman. On behalf of the association ’Makhotso Mokoatle said,” The motive of the course is to refresh our Lesotho Africa Level C Umpires because after every six months they have to be refreshed or attend another Umpiring Course. If not, they forfeit their international certificates because there are so many changes that take place to improve netball and they will be left behind. On top of Chakatsa Lephole as Instructor he is judged on the job he is doing, so he has to host Umpires’ courses around the Africa and submit to Africa governing body the job he is doing to get marks. This is going to help him to be invited for advance courses and to participate in international tournaments,” she said.

LESOTHO-Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) will host the 6th Open Memorial Independence Basketball Tournament (OMIBT) for two days early October 2015. The tourney will be on the 3rd and finish on the country’s Independence Day and will be played at Lehakoe Cultural and Recreation Centre (LCRC) basketball courts. It is expected that, LBA will invite parents and the families of the people who passed on to come and enjoy the day with them. The association has being hosting this event since 2009 successfully. Basketball Referees' after praticals on Sunday

By Tšeliso Tale MASERU-Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) organised a Two Day Referees’ Workshop which was attended by ten basketball members and referees. The workshop started on Saturday at CTC and the second session was held at Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission. The first day the course began with theory and on Sunday they

began with theory and they did their practicals at Lehakoe Cultural and Recreation Centre basketball courts. On Saturday ten referees and new players came. The participants were Bokang Pharela and ’Mamokoena Nhlapo of Khubetsoana All Stars, Sekoati Makhele from the LBA, Tšeliso Tale from TST Promotions and Mountain Tours also a Freelance Sports Reporter, Reitumetse Setupe and Limakatso Thipane of Maputsoe of Maputsoe Buffalos, Thabo Ma-

tooane of Khube State, Mookho Ntebe of Lichocha Shooting Rifles, Thabang Motsamai of Juvenile Training Centre (JTC) , Tšepiso Motloi St Stephens High School, , Tefo Mosala of Leseli and Nkopane Khosi of Leqele High School. There were also observers and LBA Officials, Instructor Bokang Sehlabaka, Vice President Sekhoane Moshabesha, Nkabi Mosaase director of referees, ’Malehloa Thulo Director Women in Sports (WIS) and Palo Mohlotsane the association’s General Secretary. The oldest participant was 56-years-old and the youngest 16-years-old, this was an enjoyable workshop since everyone was happy to participate. The purpose of the workshop was to update the referees about the new laws of the game and to educate new club players. The workshop was sponsored by the association. The General Secretary Palo Mohlotsane in his speech on behalf of the PRO said “The motive of the workshop is to welcome the new clubs into the league. We appreciate the good job sports reporters are doing and want to equip them with more knowledge on the game; also run a refresher course for our referees,” he said. The course comes just before the 2015 Basketball Senior League resumes and ahead of the Memorial Independence Basketball Tournament. But most of the well knows LBA referees were not to be seen. They are the persons who argue during the matches because they are also the club coaches. Meanwhile, the association will launch the 2015 Senior Basketball League on the 19th September 2015 and they will be begging South Warriors against Bokamoso North, followed by Banana ba Heso and Buffalos, Lichocha Shooting Rifles (LSR) and Buffalos and Bashana Ba Heso and Leseli. LBA has introduced B League starting from this season which is the former development league.

MASERU-Lesotho football is improving and is more professional after many clubs introduced the foreign players into the Vodacom Premier League and some junior clubs. I wish to congratulate Lesotho Premier League for allowing foreign players to come in numbers into the country to uplift the standard of Lesotho Football. When I look at the performances shown by Basotho players when they face clubs which have these foreign players. I cannot forget the performance I saw from Lioli players when they beat Sandawana 3-0 since Sandawana have more foreign players than any other club. On the same weekend Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) embarrassed the former Vodacom Premier League Champions and Defending Top-4 Independence Cup Champion Bantu 2-0 which has many foreign players. During the Alliance Insurance Winter Challenge Cup final match, Matlama humiliated the Defending Vodacom Premier League champions 2-0 and Lioli also have foreign players. Last weekend Matlama went on to crush Sandawana 3-1, this shows that Lesotho have players with positional talent and flair but rank low on finishing. Lioli and Bantu dominated Lesotho football in the past four seasons because the two clubs had more foreign players, but it looks like Basotho players are adjusting and getting used to playing against the foreigners. Since these players came into Lesotho football, Lesotho national squads have improved their ranking and standard in Africa. Recently Likuena has defeated countries like Gabon, Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique and hold the number one country in African football Algeria, only to lose 3-1 against it. In the past Confederations of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Under-17 Ball Games football tournament, Lesotho brought home gold because some of Lesotho players compete in the premier league and they can stand the heat. This is not the first time because in 2012 in the same competition Lesotho brought Gold from Namibia so I believe is not yet time Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) to restrict foreign players from coming into Lesotho football. Recently Lesotho Under-20 Makoanyane XI squads have being qualifying into Caf Under-20 competition and they have been doing well in the COSAFA Under-20 football games. They only challenge Lesotho clubs are facing is to do well in Africa football tournaments. In the past 10 years Lesotho have failed to make it into second round of any Africa competition. It is true Sandawana is not doing well in the league, but soon some clubs they will feel Sandawana and I have a strong belief that Sandawana will be among the best in the country. I will be not be surprised if Sandawana end up in the Top-4 because they are doing very well although they have lost against Matlama and Lioli because they are the Lesotho’s best clubs. Those who know the history of Lesotho football in the 80’s will tell you that Lesotho football was higher that today. Those days Lesotho clubs had foreign players from South Africa and neighbouring African countries. We as Lesotho were doing well internationally both nationally and at club level, most Basotho players were working in the South African mines and they were interacting with players from all over Africa.
