BAM Media honoured with Commonwealth Media of the Year Award By ‘Mantšali Phakoana

MASERU- BAM Media, one of the companies of BAM Group has been honoured with the Commonwealth Media of the Year Award at the 2nd Commonwealth Businesswomen Awards from the Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network (CBW), an organisation focused on women’s economic empowerment recognized by 53 governments across five continents. The Commonwealth Media of the Year Award seeks to celebrate organisations involved in challenging the perpetuation of embedded patriarchy in coverage, content and audience engagement assisted by technological, industry and demographic shifts. Expressing her contentment, the President of the BAM Group Foundation (BGF) and co-founder of the BAM Group of Companies, Tšepang Tšita-Mosena noted that BAM Media has been jointly awarded with Media Prima Berhad, a media organisation from Malaysia. Recounting the steps they followed, Tšita -Mosena described how they seized an opportunity as the Commonwealth delegation was visiting Lesotho earlier, prior to completing the nomination form that was available online. “We got a chance to meet the Commonwealth

delegation and enthusiastically shared our story, more so because we were still in the celebrations of the 10 year anniversary of the group since 2005. They showed interest in our women headed conglomerate and as a result, they encouraged us to register for the Commonwealth Awards which focused on women’s economic empowerment,” expounded Tšita Mosena. She revealed that they had registered for two categories; Women Entrepreneurship of the Year Award and the Media Award. This they did knowing exactly that the competition is very tight, but they felt it was worth a go in responding to one of the group’s strategic goals of international visibility. The BGF President disclosed that the key behind their participation in the awards was the President of the Federation of Lesotho Women Entrepreneurs, ‘Mamahlapane Rakuoane, who informed them of the opportunity and motivated them to participate. She had done this because she realized the BAM Group is focused on women and is forever empowering them through seminars, finite women appreciation awards and motivation sessions, to mention but a few, now with the advent of the foundation. “We openly revealed the group’s challenges and achievements not knowing that we would be considered for such a prestigious award, and Mrs. Rakuoane had enormous faith in us. We are humbled and feeling truly empowered already. Being part of the Commonwealth is an opportunity for everyone, and Lesotho is now firmly placed as this award has established our footprint in such a big network full of great opportunities to be seized,” she said. She further encouraged other Basotho women to enlist in organisations affiliated to the Commonwealth in order to familiarize themselves with opportunities which will empower them as they gain international recognition. She explained that the competition was motivated by an aspiration for organisations to showcase how they infused the spirit of gender equality and novelty in highlighting women’s empowerment causes or success stories where women serve as inspiration for others. “We worked to accomplish that goal;

Prime Minister pleads for peace By Majirata Latela LERIBE- During his second public gathering at Tšifa-li-mali on Thursday last week, Prime Minister Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili pleaded to Basotho to pray for peace and tranquillity in the country. Addressing the congregation, Dr. Mosisili explained that the purpose of the gathering was to unveil the seven ruling parties in order to familiarise Basotho with the existing government. He explained that the recent past elections served as a reminder for the government to focus on service delivery. The Prime Minister likened the coalition government to a body with different parts functioning together and explained that “the unity that we have, has given us hope that our government is stable and we will work for Lesotho in one spirit”. He mentioned that there are three separate branches of government: the Judicial, Legislative and the Executive.

MPs pass condolences to bereaved family By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU-The Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Kingdom of Lesotho passed their condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of their former colleague, ‘Maleipa Khaketla who passed on in the course of the recess of the ninth Parliament. The deceased became an MP of Qalo, Butha-Buthe after the death of Mopshatla Mabitle. Khaketla was born in 1958 in Khukhune. When conveying his condolences, the leader of the ‘Marematlou Freedom party, Moeketse Malebo revealed that Khaketla always reported herself to Parliament, and that she was very silent and possessed good listening skills. Malebo further indicated that the deceased was a powerful, sensible, loyal and disciplined member of her party, the Democratic Congress (DC). Ralechate ‘Mokose, when expressing his condolences disclosed that Khaketla rose through the proper party structures before becoming an MP. He also indicated that the

death of Khaketla is an irreparable loss, not only to her family and relatives, but also to her party and its leadership including Madam Speaker and the Prime Minister. An MP for the Malingoaneng constituency, Serialong Qoo indicated that the deceased was a humble person with profound knowledge of right and wrong, and that she knew when to speak and what to say. He also noted that the deceased performed her Parliamentary duties with dedication, commitment and diligence. Qoo further mentioned that the deceased was a person of integrity and that members of her Constituency were supportive of her. Judge Mosito’s tax case in the High Court By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU Dr. Kananelo Mosito’s case pertaining to his alleged violation of tax regulations together with the disputed letter of appointment of a tribunal by Prime Minister, Dr. Pakalitha Mosisili took place before the High Court of Lesotho on Thursday last week. In the letter, Dr. Mosito was petitioned to validate his rejection of the appointment of a tribunal to

investigate him. The case was heard by three foreign judges namely, Justice Aubrey Ledwaba, Justice ’Mamoloko Kubushi and Justice David Stephanos. The judgment in the case has been reserved for a future date. The applicants were the Director of Public Prosecution, (DPP), the Prime Minister and the Attorney General. NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO STATEMENT BY SENATE REGARDING INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE ON CAMPUS ON SUNDAY 1ST NOVEMBER, 2015

At its special meeting on Tuesday held on 03 November, 2015, the Senate received a report regarding an incidence of violence during a football match between the Rovers Football Club, the University team, and the Lesotho Defense Force Football Club. This happened at a match which took place at the Machabeng Stadium at the University’s Roma Campus. It is reported that as Rovers supporters were chanting songs and cheering on their team, some supporters of the LDF team suddenly launched an attack on Rovers supporters and assaulted them, some severely. During this attack, two NUL students, a male and a female, were severely assaulted by LDF supporters and they had to be rushed to hospital. The story of the 21-year-old female student is harrowing by any standards. It is alleged that she was beaten by four men while another had his boot on her neck pinning her to the ground. The men allegedly beat her until the sticks they carried fractured. Senate condemns in the strongest possible terms these uncivil and cowardly acts of violence. It deplores

the brutality meted out to the two students. It deplores especially the cowardly misogynistic brutalization of a female student. No soldier is fit to be the one who carries out such cowardly behavior on a defenseless young woman. Senate demands the Premier Soccer League and LEFA to urgently bring to book a team whose supporters behaved in this manner which violates sportsmanship and fair play. Senate expects and demands the Lesotho Mounted Police Service to finalize their investigations into the matter and together with the rest of the criminal justice system to urgently bring the culprits of this criminal act to justice. Senate was informed that members of the LDF visited the Roma Police station to demand a firearm confiscated by the Police at the crime scene. Senate serves a reminder to the Police that should they release the firearm to the LDF, they will be defeating the ends of justice. Senate is deeply concerned by the growing culture of lawlessness especially perpetuated by those who should be maintaining law and order in the country.

Advocate Penzhorn submitted that there was a necessity for the Prime Minister to establish a tribunal to investigate Dr. Mosito because it is his duty to do so when the need arises, and that it is not the duty of the court to tell the DPP and the AG what to do as they know their job.

Preschools take part in Global Handwashing Day celebrations

By Thandie Mthimkhulu MOHALES’ HOEK- Preschool pupils participated in Global Handwashing Day celebrations on Wednesday at Thaba-Tšoeu where they showcased their hand washing skills. The pupils demonstrated the most suitable way of washing hands with water and soap in order to preserve good hygiene. The best hand washing school was awarded a trophy. Speaking at the occasion, Chief Neo Lebona expressed contentment at being afforded an opportunity to celebrate Global Handwashing Day and outlined their plan to implement the tradition in their daily routine in order to prevent viruses which can be spread in the community through untidiness. District Health Manager of Mo-

hale’s Hoek, Dr. Henry Mahadimby indicated that not washing hands with water and soap can contribute to approximately 49% of infectious diseases which include diarrhoea which has the potential to kill children under the age of five. He added that good health begins at home and that if families maintain tidiness, the whole nation will be healthy. “This will in turn reduce the workload at health centers as visits to doctors will be reserved for those with serious health problems not diseases preventable by washing hands with water and soap, especially before handling food,” explained Dr. Mahadimby. Dr. Mahadimby further appealed to the community to come together with surrounding civil societies to implement proper hand washing in the whole community for better hy-

He stated that children are the first victims to be affected added that they are also willing to aid the government with disseminating information nationwide about the importance of washing hands with water and soap for better health. Advision Lesotho sensitizes media on use of Afrobarometer By ’Majirata Latela MASERU - Advision Lesotho, a Lesotho-based consultancy responsible for undertaking Lesotho national surveys fieldwork for the Afrobarometer, held a workshop last week aimed at familiarizing the media with the use of Afrobarometer data and analysis tools. The project manager, Libuseng Malephane, explained that the media is one of the key stakeholders for disseminating information collected by the Afrobarometer national surveys in an accessible manner to the public. She further disclosed that the Afrobarometer operates in stages and that the consultancy is undertaking the sixth stage. “This stage comprises of undertaking an extensive survey in 37 countries which began in February 2014 and aims to be completed by the end of 2015.” “Afrobarometer works with three main objectives, which are to produce scientifically reliable data on public opinion in sub-Saharan Africa, to build institutional capacity

for survey research in Africa and to broadly disseminate and apply survey results,” informed Malephane. In addition, Sibusiso Nkomo, Communications Coordinator-Southern Africa, revealed that the work of the Afrobarometer is not restricted to data collection but also incorporates educational aspects for the use of the Afrobarometer. He further affirmed that the primary purpose of the workshop was to capacitate Advisions’ partners. “We can’t just give out information without explaining it, that is why we wanted to explain to the media how we conduct the surveys and how the results can be explained so that the people understand them clearly,” Nkomo stated. He pointed out that they usually hold meetings with Members of Parliament and communities with the purpose of enlightening them about their respective countries. “We are the only organization that gets back to the people and gives them what we have found when we were conducting the research,” he clarified. “The media plays an important

role in influencing the people, so for things to be clear and look much better we have to invest in the members

of the media so that they can help the people to understand where we come from,” concluded Nkomo.

Murder suspect appears in court By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU-28-year-old Koalabata double murder suspect, Lehlohonolo Scott appeared briefly in the Magistrate Court before Chief Magistrate of the central region, ‘Matankiso Nthunya on Wednesday last week. Scott is accused of miraculously disappearing from the Maseru Central Prison on October 14, 2012. He is charged with contravening section 89, sub-sections 28 and 109 under the Constitution of Lesotho. Scott was informed of his constitutional rights including the right to request bail but came to the decision to surrender his right for bail. Mag-

istrate Nthunya explained to the suspect that the case will proceed on the 18th of November, 2015, in the High Court of Lesotho. Scott is suspected of ritually murdering Moholobela Seetsa and Kamohelo Mohata in 2012. Subsequent to his infamous escape from prison, he went into hiding in Durban, Republic of South Africa. In a dramatic twist of events in October this year, the suspect was ushered back to Lesotho under tight Police security and delivered to the Lesotho police at the Maseru border post, who took him to court and later escorted him to the Maseru Maximum Prison.

We ought to have a sound value system; this is particularly true given that our decisions are usually based on our value system. AU commission visits Lesotho By Pulane Lichaba

MASERUAfrican Union Commission (AUC) visited Lesotho to explain the salient features of the Agenda 2063, Informative can reveal. In his statement, the Minister of Development Planning, Mokoto Hloaele highlighted the Agenda 2063 Framework to be adopted at the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia earlier this year. The Minister said the Mission was also aimed at assessing the readiness of the country to move forward with the implementation of Agenda 2063 and its 10 year implementation plan. “Measures to raise domestic and external resources to finance the Agenda were also explored,” he said. “In contrast to previous frameworks, Agenda 2063 sets out clear milestones and targets at national, regional, and continental levels, with greater emphasis at national level hence the imperative of ensuring that these milestones and targets are embedded in national development plans,” he added. Mokoto continued that “the objective of the mission was to introduce and facilitate the integration of Agenda 2063 and its first 10 year implementation plan into our development plans”. He asserted that the Ministry of Development Planning is expected to take the lead and drive the Agenda 2063 domestication process, while ensuring inclusion and participation of all stakeholders. “The Ministry of Finance will look into the linkages

between the national development planning and resource mobilization process and the potential fund alternatives as per Agenda 2063 Resource Mobilization Strategy,” he explained. “The private sector and civil society should also play a major role especially in cases where the national planning system is not sufficiently inclusive or in instances where such sectors are well structured and developed,” he noted. The Commissioner of Economic Affairs, H.E Dr. Anthony Mothae Maruping, indicated that engagement of the youth in economic activities should be prioritized. “Africa has a vast number of young people who are energetic and creative and technology and innovation are very important for development”. He stated that the preparation of Agenda 2063 included an extensive review of the African development experiences, analysis of contemporary challenges and opportunities as well as a review of national plans, re-

gional continental frameworks and technical studies. “There is more hope to this framework as it involves the society, public and private sector and there is also commitment and coherence in it.” Existing and new threats faced by Africa according to Maruping includes scrambles for its resources in the face of changing global demands and demographics, undue external influence in the affairs of the continent, Africa’s disproportionate burden of the impact of climate change and the huge scale of illicit outflows of African resources and capital. “However these threats and challenges can be mitigated and turned into opportunities through mounting collective strategies and effective public policy responses and actions to counter the most disruptive economic, social and environmental changes facing Africa,” acknowledged Moruping. He said Africa is not only in need of funding, but also a more effective and inclusive means of channeling

funds to where they can be most effectively deployed and where market failure in the allocation of the needed resources exists. Dr. Maruping noted that Agenda 2063 aspires to see a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. “We want to see well educated citizens and skills revolution underpinned by Science, technology and innovation. An integrated continent, politically united, based on the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the vision of Africa’s Renaissance,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Dr. ‘Molotsi Monyamane stated that the unemployment rate is very high in the country. “60% of the government budget goes into salaries. The government is in the process of diversifying skills, we need to work together with the private sector and not compete with one another. We want to see an economically developed Africa, improve our infrastructure and also an accelerating industrialization that goes beyond textiles,” he said. Dr. Monyamane said in Lesotho, “we have 89% of literacy which means that we have the capacity to propel this country forward. What we need are bankable projects that can attract multi-national cooperatives to invest in them.” He concluded that the Domestication of Agenda 2063 at national and regional levels is critical if Africa’s transformation is to become a reality.

ROMA – The National University of Lesotho (NUL) held an extraordinary event to mark its 70th Anniversary on Friday last week, at Machabeng Stadium, Roma Campus. The motto for the commemorative ceremony was “Celebrating 70 Years of Creating Champions!” Speaking at the celebration, the Vice-Chancellor of NUL , Professor Nqosa L. Mahao indicated in all humility, that they had assembled to thank God Almighty for the inspiration he afforded the founding fathers of the University, 70 years earlier. He pointed out that Pius XII University College was born in 1945 and transformed into the University of Basutoland, Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland around the mid-60s. “It soon became the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (BOLESWA) and subsequently gave birth to the National University of Lesotho in 1975,” said Professor Mahao. “We have gathered here today in jubilation to celebrate all these historic metamorphic incarnations,” declared the Vice-Chancellor. He further asserted that as they celebrate their platinum jubilee, they are enjoined to dip their banners with founding giants such as Rev. Fathers Paul Emile Beaule, Romeo Guilbeault and others. He stated that these great men persevered under extremely difficult circumstances to carefully craft the foundations of this pride of the na-

tion. Professor Mahao recounted the journey of the University, highlighted by unfaltering determination and unbounded generosity. He detailed the milestones and achievements of the University. “Our University has also played its part as a continental institution. Over these 70 years, it has embraced students from various parts of Africa; from Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, Uganda, Mozambique, Ghana, Gabon, Swaziland, Sudan, Rwanda and Kenya,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. The Professor indicated that the quality of education the University provides is amply evident in the illustrious careers of its alumni. He stated that it boasts claim of Lesotho’s first female Governor of the Central Bank, the first female Chief Justice and first female Speaker of Parliament. Maseru- Amandine Gakima of the Trade Facilitation Office from Canada stated that they have inspected Basotho products and handicrafts from the Federation of Lesotho Women Entrepreneurs (FLWE) to see whether they meet international standards including those of the Canadian market. Gakima revealed to the Informative Newspaper that they are working with developing African countries to assist them to sell their products on the Canadian market. Gakima further maintained that the Trade Facilitation Office also aids small and medium businesses through information facilitation regarding international market standards. They also offer enterprises ideas about opportunities existing in international markets for their products. She pointed out that the Canadian market needs original products

which do not contain impurities. Gakima indicated that they also expect different designs from existing Canadian ones and expressed her optimism following the products she encountered on her visit to Lesotho. “They just need some adjustments,” she concluded. Gakima added that the products require certificates authenticating the absence of impurities especially in cosmetics containing aloe vera. By Tefo Khunonyane MASERU-The Ministry of Trade and Industry is currently reviewing the Industrial Licensing Act of 1969 because it has been surpassed by contemporary developments, says senior Industry Development Officer, Paul Fiee in an interview with Informative on Friday. Fiee said it has come to their realization that they have to sit down and re-visit the said Act. He further indicated that the process of reviewing the Act was halted in 2014 and that the Ministry is currently preparing to adopt the Industrial Licensing Act of 2014, in conjunction with the Industrial Licensing Regulations of 2014. He also noted that the Ministry is embarking on a series of sensitization workshops for industrialists (firm owners) concerning the Act to be tabled in the Parliament of Lesotho. Fiee mentioned that the Ministry has already toured Maseru and Maputsoe industrial estates communicating with various industrialists in Maseru on November 3rd

and Maputsoe on November 4th, 2015. He reiterated that the Ministry will travel from district to district, beginning with Berea on the 9th of November, 2014. The final leg of the journey will be Thaba-tseka on the 30th of November, 2015. It is formed from the emotional bonds we share and the solidarity we feel for each other,” revealed the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, during the India-Africa Forum Summit held in New Delhi, India. Addressing African leaders at the Summit, Prime Minister Modi pointed out that this was not just a meeting for India and Africa; the dreams of one-third of humanity had come together under one roof and the heartbeats of 1.25 billion Indians and 1.25 billion Africans were in rhythm. The Prime Minister asserted that their histories have intersected since ages. He said that they are united by geography and linked by the Indian Ocean. He stated that the currents of the mighty ocean have nurtured the ties of kinship, commerce, and culture through centuries.“Generations of Indians and Africans have travelled to each other’s land in search of their destiny or by the force of circumstances. Either way, we have enriched each other and strengthened our ties,” Prime Minister Modi indicated. He further stated that Africa and India have spoken in one voice in the world and they have formed a partnership for prosperity amongst themselves. The India-Africa Framework for Strategic Cooperation discloses that the Heads of State and Government and Heads of Delegation representing the continent of Africa, the African Union (AU) and its institutions, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, met in New Delhi, under the theme: “Partners in Prog-

ress: Towards a Dynamic and Transformative Development Agenda”. This third India-Africa Forum Summit follows the path of the two prior summits; the first summit occurred in New Delhi on the 8th - 9th of April 2008 and the second summit was held in Addis Ababa on the 24th - 25th of May 2011. During the third summit, the leaders announced their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in order to reinforce the underlying drivers of economic growth, industrialization, infrastructure and employment. These play an integral role as drivers of sustainable devel-

opment. The partners outlined their ambitious set of means of implementing and assisting developing countries. The Framework for Strategic Cooperation further points out that the people of Africa and India have known each other and traded across the Indian Ocean for centuries. SACU Reviews Trade Policy By Staff Reporter GENEVA- Senior Trade Officials from the Governments of the five Member States of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and the Executive Secretary of SACU, Paulina Elago gathered last week in Geneva, Switzerland to undergo reviews of their respective trade policies by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). It was the 4th time that SACU Member States’ trade policies were being reviewed by the world body that governs multilateral trade across the globe. All SACU Countries are members of the WTO and as a result have certain legal commitments to fulfill from time to time. One such commitment being periodic reviews of their trade policies by the Trade Policy Review Mechanism overseen by the WTO Committee on Regional Trade Agreements. The 4th Trade

Policy Review of SACU took place from 4-6 November 2015 at the WTO Secretariat in Geneva. The Trade Policy Review Mechanism is the most important transparency exercise of the WTO. Its purpose is to examine and evaluate Member Countries’ trade and related policies at regular intervals and contribute to improved adherence by all Members to rules, disciplines and commitments made under the different WTO provisions and agreements. Significant developments which may have an impact on the global trading system are also monitored. It aims at promoting a smoother functioning of the multilateral trading system, by achieving greater transparency in, and understanding of, the trade policies and practices of WTO members. While not intended to serve as a basis for the enforcement of specific obligations, it is meant to provide for

an overall assessment of the trade policy of the different WTO Members. For each review, two documents are prepared: a policy statement by the government of the Member Country under review, and a detailed report written independently by the WTO Secretariat. The Secretariat report covers the development of all aspects of SACU Member States trade policies, including domestic laws and regulations, the institutional framework, trade policies by measure and by sector. These documents are then discussed by the WTO’s full membership in the Trade Policy Review Body (TPRB). Written and verbal questions from WTO Members are submitted to which the SACU Member States will have to respond. These documents and the proceedings of the TPRB’s meetings are published

The next India-Africa Forum Summit will be held in the year 2020. shortly afterwards. Since 1995, when the WTO came into force, services and trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights have also been covered. Under the WTO's Trade Policy Review Mechanism, the four largest Members in terms of trade volume are reviewed every two years; currently, these Members are the EU, the US, Japan and China. The next 16 Members are reviewed every four years, and the rest every six years; a longer period may be fixed for Least Developed Country Members. SACU Member States are reviewed every six years by the WTO Trade Policy Review Body – the previous review was held in November 2009. SACU was represented at the Review this week in Geneva by Senior Trade Officials and Government Representatives from SACU Member States’ Capitols and Geneva-based Trade Missions and Embassies. The Executive Secretary of SACU and officials from the SACU Secretariat had also attended to provide support to SACU Member States.

The New Kid in Comedy By Keletso Nyareli Limpho Setaka, commonly referred to as “Action” is a stand-up comedian based in Mafeteng. Aside from being a street vendor for a living, Action has scored parts in many live performances seen in and around town, where he is featured cracking jokes while running his business. Relax catches up with Action to uncover more about him and his love for comedy. When and how did you become interested in comedy? I became interested in comedy back in 1997 mocking other school children when I was still in primary school. As time went by, my friends and most of my classmates told me I should consider comedy as a profession and that I might make a substantial amount of money. Back then when I was in class I would always get caught joking around and it would get me into lots of trouble because my teachers felt that my behavior was inappropriate. However, during presentations I would always crack a little joke so as to ease the tension and distract from any mistakes I otherwise might have made. My parents died when I was very young so I did not have any means to finish schooling so I decided to take comedy seriously and de-stress a little bit. “Now I’m doing it at bigger events getting a bunch of laughs from fans, I’m happy!”

Tell us about your debut DVD of comedy, what is it called and how did it come about? The DVD is called “Ho koaleha hase ho otla nnta ka koto”. It was released in October 2015. I had fun writing the script for it, I only faced financial constraints as shooting the comedy was really expensive. Otherwise, I am happy with the final product. People love it and its doing very well in the market. The shows main characters are Serame (played by myself) and Mohatsela who are best friends and extremely mischievous. The film took two weeks to complete. Do you have a particular comedic style? Any specific influences? My comedy is story-oriented. I

According to Moratuoa Hlongwa, a YALI 2014 alumnus, the initiative is an effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. She stated that President Obama launched YALI in 2010 to support young African leaders and escort them towards growth and prosperity, strengthening democratic governance, and enhancing peace and security across Africa. Furthermore, Hlongoa emphasized that through YALI, the United States is investing in the emerging generation of African leaders by committing significant resources to enhance leadership skills, bolster entrepreneurship, and connect young African leaders with one another, the United States and innovative leaders in the private, civic, and public sectors. YALI programs such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders,

YALI Regional Leadership Centers, and the YALI Network provide interconnected avenues of opportunity for young Africans to enhance their leadership skills. Lisema Masheane, the Young African leader of 2014 shared a little about his experience in the United States and how he enjoyed his stay. He admitted that the day he left for America felt like a dream. He added that he learned a lot from the YALI experience and encouraged new attendees to apply. In an interview with one of the attendees at the meeting, Lineo Makonyane revealed that she felt encouraged and happy to be a part of the meeting. She stated that soon after the meeting she is taking her application forms in and trying her luck.

usual set of circumstances arises or I learn something that I can’t stop thinking about, chances are, I’ll try to write a joke about it. I am my own inspiration. What happens if they don’t laugh? Ultimately it’s inevitable. Everyone has sets that don’t go well sometimes. The first few times it feels really bad when people don’t laugh. Like a nightmare, you feel unprepared and confused. Now that I have more experience onstage, I don’t get so panicky. I just adjust the type of material I’m using or try to engage the crowd directly. If my efforts don’t work I just pick myself up, dust myself off and try a little harder next time. I see it as a learning experience; it is how I better myself as a performer. How do you deal with pirating? I feel really helpless when it comes to issues surrounding piracy; it leaves me really dejected as people fail to understand that this is how I make my living. I try not to dwell on it too much as it is the negative aspect of my career I prefer to focus on the fact that I’m doing what I love and that in itself is a blessing. Life goes on. Is your comedy profitable? Yes I make a bit of money from my comedy. Half a loaf is better than nothing! Say something funny. It’s really weird to just start reciting my act out of context. Believe me; I tried the first several times people asked me. I got a lot of blank stares.

Catching up with Raboko By Keletso Nyareli Relebohile Raboko is born and bred in Boleka, Mafeteng district. He is a self-taught actor, producer, director, script writer and preacher at Rivers of Life Ministries. Raboko started off participating in bible sketches when he was young and always managed to land the leading role. His acting started back when he was in primary school in 2005 and always felt that it was a sign of things to come. In 2013, Raboko continued pursuing his love for acting at Thabeng High School. He explains that Thabeng High School had a theatre and that it was a blessing in disguise. “I used the theatre to my full advantage, a school with a theatre was surprising at that time” enlightened Raboko. According to Raboko, he befriended Katiso Sekete revealing that Sekete became his main influence in acting. He reveals that Sekete was really fond of Raboko’s talent for acting and pushed him to pursue it as his career. Raboko says he had taken acting serious but after his friend Sekete pushed him to do what he does best he started to look deeper into acting and soon after joining English clubs found himself reciting poems as a way of enhancing his acting abilities. Raboko further explained that he focused on acting more than anything else and emphasized that he would watch movies then try emulating some of the characters. He fell in love with bossy and aggressive characters mainly because he found them fascinating and attention grab-

bing. Raboko appeared in a short film entitled ‘Calamity Danger’ produced around November 2015 and also appears in “Kingdom” and “If I could be heard” both released in April 2015. He says Calamity Danger is a film about drug abuse amongst young people. In the film, he portrayed a gangster. He states that the film has given him a name in the industry however many of the people who have watched the film believe that the character he portrays in the film is a true reflection of who he is. Raboko says as time passed during his acting career, he realized that the acting industry in Lesotho has a long way to go. He is presently the Founder and Director of Sekhankula Productions. He emphasized that him establishing Sekhankula was mainly to assist young people embrace their talent for acting. He revealed that they have theatrical films and participate a lot in youth related activities while at the same time pursuing acting. He adds that Sekhankula has only been in existence for two months but has already released two short films. Raboko accredits his support system for his acting career mainly because his fan base is growing rapidly and people recognize him everywhere he goes. He revealed that he is mostly influenced by some of his favorite actors including Vin Diesel, Vuyo Dabula popularly known for his role on Generations: The Legacy as Kumkani “Gaddafi” Phakade.

By Tšeliso Tale MASERU- The Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation (MGYSR) in conjunction with the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC) hosted the official presentation of the presidential report on Tuesday at one hotel in Maseru. The Minister of GYSR Mathibeli Mokhothu said the purpose of the meeting was to present the report, which highlights initiatives aimed at raising funds, developing infrastructure and supporting Basotho athletes. Subsequent to presenting the report, the Minister explained to the associations and federations’ representatives that the budget allocated to the MGYSR was insufficient to meet the needs of the Ministry and its stakeholders. Therefore, in an attempt to aid the abovementioned bodies and individuals, the Minister’s office sought funds from other countries. Mokhothu further encouraged local companies and businesses to lend a hand to the associations and federations as he extended an invitation to the President of the LSRC and Director of Sports, Puisano Tšosane to accompany him on his visit to the High Commission of Lesotho in Pretoria, South Africa. The visit to Pretoria is intended to address issues relating to the development of Basotho athletes and as an exchange of expertise between Lesotho and South Africa. Lesotho boasts a landscape with high altitude which has recently been advantageous for many outdoor activities. Recent developments initiated by the ministry are the introduction of the Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon and the Rapokoloane High Altitude Training Centre. The meeting concluded with the President of the LSRC, Limpho Mokhochane acknowledging that proposals regarding different aspects of sports had been submitted to different development partners and that some of the partners were expected to visit Lesotho in the near future. Mokhochane said chief issues of concern relate to infrastructure, equipment and facilities; technical skills, administrative improvement, governance and sports marketing skills; resources such as coaches and medical specialists; and finances from the government, development partners and sponsors. The President further emphasized the need to establish development sports centers for women, girls and people living with disabilities. Other areas of concern according to Mokhochane include formulating a future for physical education and coaching initiatives, constructing outdoor and indoor sports arenas fully equipped with sound and electronic equipment, accommodation and medical facilities, sports hubs and ICT facilities throughout the country. “Lesotho is also set to engage the Ministry responsible for Japan’s aid as part of its request for infrastructural development,” explained Mok-

MASERUThe Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation, Mathibeli Mokhothu was seen exceptionally active at the Presidential Meeting held at one hotel in Maseru. Mokhothu unveiled the ministry’s plan for the 32 associations and federations registered with the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC). The Minister further revealed that his Ministry is presently working in partnership with the LSRC to revise sports regulations with the intention of accommodating the Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) and constructing an inclusive stakeholder approach. Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the government’s budget constraints which are presently insufficient to meet all the needs of the associations, federations and individual athletes seeking to partake in the South African Marathon races. The participants often have inadequate funds to meet transportation, dietary and other needs. As part of the Ministry’s strategy, the Director of Sports, Puisano Tšosane and the President of the LSRC will accompany the Minister on his visit to the High Commission of Lesotho in Pretoria. The team consisting of the LSRC and LNOC will depart on Tuesday following the Cabinet meeting. My observation to date is that the Minister’s strategy for associations and federations in Lesotho is an inclusive and economic one. By combining forces with the LSRC and the LNOC, this team of representatives can formulate the necessary strategies for the world of sports in Lesotho. Furthermore, as a consequence of creating partnerships with the abovementioned partners, budget constraints can be minimized and allocated in focused and productive manner.

MASERU-The Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) is hosting a five-day Administration Course and this is the second level of the course. The course began on Monday and will come to an end on Friday. At least twenty Basotho from different institutions, federations and association accompanied by the media attended the course. Those who pass the examination will be awarded certificates. Only people who have completed the first level of the Olympic Administration Course have qualified for this five day course. This course is organized by LNOC but is part of the Olympic Solidarity Sponsorship.

By Tšeliso Tale LESOTHO-Bashana Ba Heso (BBH) and the defending champions of the 2014 National Basketball League (NBL) in the country are on the top of the Log after five matches of the first round of the 2015 Lesotho NBL. BBH have won the games they have played and they still have to meet face to face with the former and the longtime champions, KTA All Stars. BBH have played and beaten one of the hot basketball teams, Lichocha Shooting Rifles, while Lichocha defeated KTA last Friday and this afforded the BBH the top spot. The will of BBH to retain the title was seen when they played and defeated Lerotholi Polytechnic (LP) 67-27 in the match which was played under floodlights. BBH had a postmortem meeting after the match and this is where they complained of not burying enough baskets when they had the opportunity against their weaker opponents. BBH have small and talented players with ambitions to win and to retain the title, although they still have a long way to go because it is still the first round of the 2015 NBL. KTA have players with a lot of experience and also have the will to do well. Lichocha have young players like BBH and they are determined to win but lack experience although they are in possession of a coach with a good record. Then there is the newest team, Matlama, who did perform very well over the weekend. ty of Technology (LUCT) 65-40 in the last match of the day. Matlama did well in the first three quarters and lost stamina in the last quarter. Rovers are just regrouping, while LP and LUCT lack the fitness to do well. The LBA Public Relations Officer, Ratšolo Molupe said the league is very exciting, “you saw how KTA had their first loss on Friday against Lichocha. There are no easy games anymore in the NBL. There are several good teams in the NBL which means there is balance and it will be interesting to see which teams will qualify for the Top-4 play-off.” In the ladies category, Shooting Rifle is leading the Log Standing with KTA second and BBH fairing third. This alone reflects the strength of basketball in Lesotho. In the B division which is the development league, Buffalos are on top followed by Bokamoso North and South Warriors third. Last week’s results are as follows: Wednesday LUCT lost to Leseli 41-63 and up until now LUCT have yet to win. On Friday Lichocha Shooting Rifles defeated KTA All Stars by 60-64 baskets. On Saturday the league decided to postpone the Sunday matches to Saturday because Rovers teams were not available due to a school meeting. Matlama won the first match 81-41 baskets against Buffaloes. Tigers forfeited to Basali Ba Heso (BBH) in the women’s category, for not showing up. Khubestate lost 41-71 baskets to KTA All Starts in the (A) division, BBH ladies lost 43-64 to Shooting Rifles and Matlama went on to defeat LUCT 65-40. Matlama have improved their position in the NBL league table. Their support has improved as well.

By Tšeliso Tale MASERU- The Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) will host the second basketball awards ceremony since the March 2015 awards. The ceremony will be in Maseru on the 20th November 2015 at a hotel for the 2014/15 season, commencing at

18hrs. The first awards were held at the same venue in March 2015 for 2013/14 season. This is when the now Development Director, Fako Masupha and his clubs won most of the awards. Similar to the first awards, LBA will also award media houses and individual sports re-

porters. However, unlike in the first ceremony, the LBA has introduced a voting system for the media and voting is open to everybody. The contestant’s friends and their families can vote on the LBA Facebook page. This gives people who are not interested in basketball the opportunity to influence basketball in the country, since basketball stakeholders know which media houses play a big part in promotion and coverage of basketball events. In the first LBA awards, there was only one media award category and the association made the decision to award Informative Newspaper/Tšenolo FM Sports Reporter and Presenter, Tšeliso Tale (TST) from TST Promotions & Mountain Tours. Other stakeholders that partake in the awards include the Lesotho Premier League Management Committee (PLMC), some Premier League clubs such as Bantu FC, Likhopo, Lioli, Kick4life and Matlama. Others are the Lesotho Sports and

Recreation (LSRC) and the Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation (MGYSR). The Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation, Mathibeli Mokhothu, his deputy and senior staff are expected to attend as the VIP guests. The President of the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission, Limpho Mokhochane, the President of Lesotho Nation Olympic Committee, ’Matlohang Moiloa Ramoqopo and their Executive Committee members in conjunction with other associations, federations and basketball stakeholders will also be present. Meanwhile, the association has a new Office Administrator, Mpho Nthunya, who was provided by the MGYSR after a request made by the association. Nthunya is replacing the former Office Administrator, Lerato Mochekela who is currently working with Vodacom Lesotho. It is expected that with her qualifications, she will assist the association with sponsorships.

Bantu’s defeat of Lioli a tradition By Tšeliso Tale

MASERU-It has become a norm for Bantu to defeat Lioli in all their meetings. The tradition occurred once again on Sunday when Bantu defeated Lioli 15-14 on a penalty shootout after they played to a 1-all in regulation time. It was evident from the first whistle that Bantu had an overwhelming desire to retain the championship they have won more than any club over the past 25 years. Nonetheless, Bantu is the only club which has won any trophy three consecutive for years. Bantu began the match by attacking Lioli while Lioli parked the bus, but it was not easy for Lioli to stop the determination of Lazola Jokojokwane who scored in every match played against Lioli. The striker, who scored the first and the third goal a fortnight ago against Lioli in the Vodacom Premier League match, scored the first goal of the match on Sunday. Unlike the previous matches played between the two clubs, this time Bantu attacked Lioli. Bantu used to sit back and try to catch Lioli on the counter attack. Bantu would sit back and play an offensive game in the last 20 minutes of

the second half. This is the difference between the current technical team compared to the 2013/14 technical team. This was the last match for the ‘Boys Two Men’ technical team made up of Caswell Moru and Mosito Matete. This is not the first time the two coaches work together in the same camp. Their efforts did not bear any fruit, perhaps because of the quality of the players they had, but they managed to secure a place for Bantu into the Vodacom Premier League. Lioli superstar and substitute Tumelo “Makhopo” Khutlang brought life into the game when he scored an equalizer. Bantu tried to come back and find the winning goal but Lioli was all over Bantu and failed to convert. The two teams made technical changes but they did not change anything because the match concluded with 1-all. Bantu won on penalties and Lazola also scored both of his penalties during the penalty shootout. Motlatsi ‘Lekope la Bantu’ Mofokeng, Bantu Communications and Marketing Manager informed Informative Newspaper that they were prepared to win the tournament on penalties and that they knew that one player of the teams

A total of sixty-five (65) goals were scored in this tournament, 13 in regulation time while 52 were scored during the penalty shootout and one penalty was scored during the regulation time in the match between Bantu and LCS by Lieta Lehloka (11). The tournament has become more interesting and has attracted more spectators. However, on Saturday, Basotho did not attend in large numbers for various reasons. Some were at work and others were more interested in the match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Lazola Jokojokwane was named Man of the Tournament and walked away with M3000. He shared

The Goalkeeper of the Tournament was Kholuoe Phasumane, who received M3000 and a man of the match in each match played during the tournament was elected. They were Thabiso Mohapi, Junior Maba, Lehloka Lieta and Hlompho Kalake. The referee of the tournament was Lebalang Martin Mokete and the assistant of the tournament was Puleng Mahamo, each walking home with M1000. Bantu won the Gold, the Floating Tournament Trophy and a cheque worth M110 000.

MASERU- Sunday ushered in a win by the Mafeteng based club, Bantu ‘A Matšo Matebele’. Bantu retained the Top-4 Independence Cup they have won three consecutive times and forced the tournament sponsors to purchase a new trophy. Bantu, whose result has become a tradition that it be completed on a penalty shootout, won the tournament. This year, Bantu defeated the defending champions, Lioli ‘Tse Nala’ of Berea with a historical 15-14 penalty shootout, the longest in the history of this cup tournament. The match was played to a 1-all draw in the regulation time and the two teams had to go straight to the penalty shootout. This was the third match of the tournament to be completed on a penalty shootout. The first match was between Bantu and Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) in the first semifinal on Saturday. Bantu’s match against LCS was played to a 2-all draw in regulation time and Bantu went on to win the

Finally, Matlama was offered a consolation prize of M30 000.00 The tournament was sponsored by Metropolitan Lesotho and Lesotho Standard Bank to the tune of M600 000 per season in the threeyear contract of the total of M1, 800 000. During this tournament, the sponsors were very hands on unlike the Lesotho Premier League Management (PMLC). It is unclear why the PLMC is not running the show and leave it in the hands of the sponsors.
