होली कब है ? कब है होली (When is holi? When is it?)

- With inputs from Amitabh Verma If you have known Holi or if you have watched Bollywood, chances are that you have heard of this famous dialogue from the Hindi movie Sholay- the movie which remained in Indian Cinema theaters for five years beginning August 1975. In year 2005, the movie was crowned ‘Best Film of 50 Years’ at Filmfare Awards. The love for this film has significantly influenced the Hindi Colloquial; influenced to an extent that it is now almost customary to enquire for holi festival this particular way. It brings in the kick of the drama which is inherent with this festival. Celebrating Holi the traditional way involves a great deal of real life drama. Just like a movie, there are plots, there are songs, there are emotions, there is romance and then there is a happy ending. The plots are about coloring others while staying “white” yourself. If you are creating a plot, you are generally the “villain” who along with some confederates, would conspire to drench the unsuspecting common man. You would do this, because of the thrill you get out of this. You may be hiding and doing gorilla attacks on passers with buckets of colored water, color filled balloons and pichkaris (large squirt guns, which shoot out colored liquid for a long distance attack). You may be gathering your mob, attacking, over powering the “innocents” and then coloring them in red, yellow, green, purple etc. You may even be cunning enough to hide colors, give an unsuspecting someone a big loving hug and then coloring them when they are in your folds

The festival of holi is very close to my heart, so is Vihara. I feel extremely proud to present to you ViharaVasantotsav-2015.

Vihara is not just a event brochure but a place where thoughts of hundreds of our readers come together. Like every edition, we invited entries and once again got overwhelmed with responses in several categories. In this edition of Vihara, we have put strong emphasis on the kids’ section, encouraging them to explore the Indian culture and learn about it through incentive of space in Vihara. In the Vihara-Diwali edition-2014, we had started to promote non-profit organizations at no cost to them. Through this edition of Vihara, we are sponsoring one more organization -Accesslife which is based out of Mumbai, India. The organizations which we supported in the past edition, have reported good success in reaching out to individuals through us. We are proud to have contributed back to the society through their promotion and will continue to do so in future. Vihara-Vasantotsav-2015 is publishing entries from over 25 individuals and our esteemed sponsors. An effort of this magnitude cannot succeed without the support and motivation of peers. I would like to thank all members of MiBihar committee for their continued support. I would like to extend special thanks to Mrs. Swati Sinha for joining me in the editorial team. We hope to continue to receive the love & criticism from our authors. Through this, we will continue to strive towards an even better Vihara next time. Until then, Enjoy! -Amit Ranjan Disclaimer: MiBihar does not own any content presented in Vihara. Any concerns for the presented material, must be addresses to the respective author.

A brief introduction to myself: I was born and brought up at Ranchi, Bihar in India. I am an alumnus of BIT Mesra Ranchi, India & University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. I work for Cummins Inc. & live at Columbus, Indiana. My immediate family consists of my parents and two sisters located at Ranchi, Mumbai-India & Kassel-Germany. I enjoy photography, driving, doing hands-on work on machines & cooking. I have been with MiBihar since its inception in 2011, beginning as the event photographer, then as the chief editor and currently serving as the VicePresident.

You would continue to conspire until the “hero(s)” or heroine(s) out of the common-man crowd have had enough of you. The heroes and heroines would now create their own plots and fight out the evil villain(s) with more colors. While doing so; the heroes, the heroines and the villains may be dancing to the latest Bollywood numbers like “Balam, Pichkari jo tune mujhe mari, to seedhee sadi chori sharabi ho gayee”, meaning ‘My beloved, your attack with the color filled squirt gun turned me intoxicated’ (humor intended). When you come back home after the day long color fights, your mom would ask: “Beta, Khel aaye holi?, aa ab kuch kha le”, meaning ‘Dear, did you have enough of colors?, come, have some food now’. This would be the time when the food fest will start – a selection of delicious holi special dishes, like – maalpua, kofta and dahivada. After the food fiesta, you may get back to the streets fighting another color fight, may be trying to catch an eye on your neighborhood crush or may simply be spending quality time with your friends and family. In the evening, you would clean up, wear your pretty clothes and then go around your neighborhood with dry colors in hand. To the elders, you would put dry colors at their feet signifying respect. To your friends & Youngers you would color their faces with dry colors; remember where there is color there can always be a plot. You would go around tasting delicious dishes at each household in the neighborhood. After the long tiring day, you would come home and get a comforting sleep; knowing that the neighbor with whom you got into an argument last year is now back to being friends with you because you played holi with each other. The festival of holi may be unique to India, but the spirit of holi is widespread across several cultures. Inspired by a similar festival ‘Tomatina’ in another Bollywood success ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, the editorial team of MiBihar, did some web research to find those corners of the world which celebrate similar festivals of getting dirty (literally). We present to you a conglomeration of such festivals (we duly acknowledge the sources of information: http://www.scoopwhoop.com; http://www.complex.com; http://www.livescience.com; http://en.wikipedia.org; https://www.fest300.com/; http://www.timeout.com/; http://www.latomatinatours.com/): 'The Tomato Battle' or 'La Tomatina' in Spain La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food Fight' where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol's normal 9,000 person population. Since 2013 official ticketing has been in place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people. At around 11am many trucks haul a bounty of tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Participants throw tomatoes and get involved in a tomato fight purely for fun. The tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown so as to reduce the risk of injury. The estimated number of tomatoes used is around 150,000 or over 40 metric tons. After exactly one hour the fight ends with the firing of the second shot, announcing the end. The whole town square is colored red and rivers of tomato juice flow freely. Fire trucks hose down the streets and participants use hoses that locals provide to remove the tomato paste from their bodies. After the cleaning, the village cobblestone streets are pristine due to the acidity of the tomato disinfecting and thoroughly cleaning the surfaces.

La-Tomatino Festival

The Orange Battle

The Orange Battle in Italy The Battle of the Oranges is a festival in the Northern Italian city of Ivrea (near Turin), which includes a tradition of throwing of oranges between organized groups. The spirit of Carnival lives through the reenactment of the city’s liberation from tyranny dating back to medieval times. A baron who starved the city was driven away thanks to a miller’s daughter who rebelled and roused the people to revolt. Today, this struggle between the classes is represented by “the lord’s followers” in carts wearing jesters’ outfits, and “commoners” on their feet in sporting uniforms. The miller’s daughter, Violetta, is represented by a woman dressed in white and a crimson-red headdress, who throws yellow flowers and candies to her admirers. The horse-drawn carts and their despised armored occupants represent the emperor’s men—and they get a serious pelting. While La Tomatina is free for all, Orange Battle is highly structured. It’s free and fun to watch for nearly 100,000 spectators, but for the nine competitive teams of almost 4,000, it’s serious business. They throw oranges at each other – with considerable violence – during the traditional carnival days: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday during the month of February. Wearing a red hat or head wrap is to designate a spectator and is supposed to leave you exempt from a direct hit, but being anywhere on the ground in the town’s square leaves one open to being pelted. Chinchilla Watermelon Festival in Australia Chinchilla Melon Festival is held every 2 years in chinchilla a town in Queensland, Australia. Chinchilla produces 25% of Australia’s melons. The first Chinchilla Melon Festival was held in 1994 by local producers and businessmen, to lift the town’s spirits after the severe drought experienced in the early 1990s. The Festival features extremely interactive and unique events, such as Melon Skiing, Melon Bungee, Melon Bullseye, Melon Ironman, Melon Chariot, a pip spitting competition, Melon Head Smashing cracking open as many watermelons as possible using only the head and melon eating races. Songkran Water festival in Thailand The Songkran festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April. It is also known as Thailand Water Festival. It is the largest celebration in Thailand, and arguably the largest water fight in the world. It is about cleaning, purification, and fresh starts. Houses are cleaned, Buddha statues are gently washed with scented water, and elders are honored by pouring water respectfully over their hands. Although the origins of Songkran are far more religious, splashing complete strangers with water has become the main attraction of the festival. Dousing or sprinkling people with water signifies the washing away of bad thoughts and actions, and brings them good luck in the newyear. Haro Wine Festival, Spain Every year on June 29th, the small town of Haro in northern Spain hosts a grape bash and splash to celebrate its numerous wineries attended by thousands of purple partying tourists and wine soaked locals alike. From bullfighting to wine-tasting to shirt soaking, there’s a mood and temperament for everyone at Haro. This festival traces back to a 13th century border dispute between Haro and its neighbours in Miranda de Ebro. The king stepped in and ordered Haro to mark its border with crimson banners every Saint Peter’s Day and the first Sunday of each September. The observation of Saint Peter's Day broke down in celebration some 400 years later, in a joyous wine sharing turned into a purple shower. This happy celebration really caught on during the last century and was officially dubbed the Battle of Wine in 1965. At 7 AM, sharp, the mayor leads a procession on horseback, followed by a crowd comprised of all (legal) ages, led through the town and up to the Bilibio cliffs. Much like the Running of the Bulls or La Tomatina the dress is all white with a red scarf. The colorful transformation does not take long. The weapon is a traditional bota bag which is a traditional Spanish leather wine satchel, lined with a goat's bladder. The power of the bota is its ability to be squeezed to jettison streams of red wine as far as one can shoot it. There may also be squirt guns, spray misters, and wine-filled balloons. The white clothing transforms into a purple that resembles ones’ lips. The battle ends around noon, when the crowds are totally drenched, exhausted, and intoxicated. Every year, approximately 50,000 liters of Riojan wine bite the bota bag. Survivors drag their purple pants back to the Plaza de la Paz (“the Square of Peace”) for a not so peaceful offering – Bull Fight.

The bullfights take place in the town’s local ring, leaving the youth to demonstrate their agility and bravery amongst the local heifers. Locals want to make sure they aren’t cow-ardly and go mano-a-mano in the ring with the heifers. It’s not a fight to the death, but to mostly laugh at the youth filled with liquid courage getting trampled by the smaller vaquillas. As the evening turns into night, large bonfires go up and the rest of the day is spent eating and drinking in typical Spanish fashion. Boryeong Mud Festival in South Korea Boryeong Mud means many things to many people. This filthy festival involves wrestling, sliding, massages, and photo contests. Getting dirty here is fun. The idea for the festival began in 1998 as a promotion for the mineral-rich mud found near Boryeong. When the manufacturers of Boryeong Mud products determined the beneficial effects of their local mud, they invited visitors to slather themselves in the stuff. The event took on a life of its own quickly, attracting thousands of visitors to this otherwise sleepy town annually for the beach, the warm weather, and, the mud. Fueled by word of mouth, good times and exceptional photographs of mud people, the festival has become an international phenomenon. Families picnic under beach umbrellas, toddlers splash in the kid-friendly area, and the under-30 crowd are the front-and-center partiers inside an inflatable mud wonderland. Festival-goers have their pick of competitive activities like the Mr. Mud contest, mud wrestling, mud races and even a mud boot camp. Those looking for a more laid back experience can opt for mud facials, body painting, pottery demos, soap-making and lounging on Daecheon Beach. Pop and hip-hop performers from around the world affirm its status as an international event, providing an eclectic soundtrack to the wet and wild madness. While different festivals may be unique to themselves, there is one common element across them – the idea of being humans. Whether we are using colors, mud, fruits, vegetables or wine, we are painting each other beyond recognition as individuals making us all equals, trying to forget the differences and giving a new start in the spirit of being friends and bringing out our inner child once again. As Jae-Sang Lee, Director of Korea Tourism Organization, says about mud-festival, “The most distinctive point of the Festival is to create a united place where people from all over the world come together, meet and interact with strangers and are able to break down walls of age, nationality, race and have fun together and leave with memories and new friends.” All are one under the mud. The editorial board of MiBihar continues further to – “Holi kab hai, kab hai Holi”: Holi is the spirit of celebrating conviviality. Celebrate it with the name ‘Holi’, ‘La-Tomatina’ or as the ‘mud-festival’, any name we choose, we choose being friends and being humans and that can be celebrated at any time of the year, in any corner of the world, in any form we can enjoy.

Keeping our Environment Clean By Ishani Modi Keeping our environment clean is very important. If we don’t keep it safe then we won’t be able to live on Earth for long and not be in healthy shape. Here is just a few ways to keep the Earth clean. One way is to pick up trash when you see it outside on the ground. Pick up litter like paper/plastic bags and throw them in trash so it can be disposed properly. Especially plastic bag if you don’t then it could find its way to sea. This is very bad as some water animals eat those thinking jellyfish and may die. Turtles are one of these animals, and this is why turtles are in endangered species list. This would create in balance in eco system and lifecycle. Don’t litter this is an example of keeping the Earth clean. Also recycle or reuse objects instead of throwing them away. This will put less trash on Earth, and less trash means a healthier environment. This also helps using less natural resource. Some of the items can be reused to make arts and crafts. One example of making an art work is a butterfly out of an empty milk carton. So, to sum it all up, keeping the Earth clean makes it a better place to live in healthy way. God gives us a place to live and we should respect it. We should all be protectors of the Earth. This will make the Earth cleaner for you and future generations.

Symphony of Lives by Abhishek Jha Abhishek is a Life member of Michigan-Bihar. He is a writer of short stories. His stories are derived from the lives of people – so poignant, so touching – the author believes a story can be told on every day of it. There are no lessons offered, only a look at the vagaries of life and how people deal with them. Abhishek lives in Denver, Colorado. About the Book Sweating in the blazing sun, under the watch of the Goddess, a lowly Dhak player will fight for his dignity until the bitter end. A patriarch and his rickety car will get their comeuppance when the stakes for success are high. A handsome man is still a bachelor, and only the costliest scotch will make him blurt out why. Can the quest for holy cow dung turn animals into divine beings, and men into animals? The question will be settled soon. Stories of people – real, earthy and Indian; any of these could have happened to any of us, but would the end have been the same for all of us? We do not know. What we know is if we were in the story, we would have loved every moment of it. Available at: http://www.amazon.com/A-Symphony-Lives-Abhishek-Jha/dp/9384226637 Price: USD: 5

10 types of flu we should know about Dr. Niru Prasad MD With all the fearsome emerging flu viruses of different kinds it's easy to make yourself sick just thinking about them. And it's true: Influenza is a highly contagious, rapidly transforming pathogen that keeps doctors and pharmaceutical companies guessing every year regarding vaccines. There are other types of below mentioned viruses that affect individuals of all ages. Here's all you need to know about viruses. Seasonal flu Although regular old influenza may not seem as frightening as some of its more exotic siblings, the flu hospitalizes about 200,000 Americans a year and kills anywhere from 3,000 to 49,000 annually in the U.S. Thanks to scientists who can predict fairly accurately which strains will be more common in the U.S. each year. For most healthy adults, seasonal flu lasts about a week and usually goes away on its own. It tends to be more debilitating than the common cold, with symptoms like headaches and muscle aches, fever, cough, sore throat and a runny nose. Young children, pregnant women and adults 65 and up plus those with an immune compromised respiratory system are most vulnerable to complications.

At Dussehra Diwali Dhoom -2014, Michigan Bihar recognized Dr. Nitru Prasad for her invaluable contributions to the society Dr. Niru Prasad got her medical degree in Bihar, India. She is certified in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. She has authored a book called “How to Keep Your Child Safe and Healthy. This book has been distributed to the developing countries through Orphan Medical Network International (OMNI). With the proceeds of the book, Dr. Prasad started a charity fund for blind orphans at her hometown Patna. Niru is married to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bala Prasad. She is blessed with four children and six grandchildren.

H1N1 flu The HiN1 Formerly known as swine flu virus surfaced in 2009 and reached pandemic proportions, infecting approximately 60 million people in the U.S. (returned every year however a vaccine has helped decrease infection rates. Symptoms are similar to flu and HINI virus affects individuals below 65 years of age. The vaccine has decreased the infection rate in affected individuals. Symptoms are similar to those of other seasonal flu strains, although unlike other strains, HI NI has been shown to hit healthy adults under 65 as well the children. It has returned every year however trivalent and quadrivalent vaccines has helped decrease infection rates, and it's now considered a form of seasonal flu. Avian flu Avian flu is strain of "bird flu" that has infected more than 650 people (and killed nearly 400) in Asia and the Middle East since 2003. When humans contract H5Nl, they can develop fever and cough and have difficulty breathing. Up to 60% of those infected have died. The virus spreads from infected birds to human in pandemic areas like china, Egypt and Indonesia. Variant flu When a virus present in pigs makes its way to humans, it's considered a variant virus. In the last three years, more than 300 people in the U.S. have been infected by a new strain, H3N2v, mostly after exposure to pigs at state fairs. A vaccine is being developed. People get infected by eating raw meats from pigs and from improper hygiene while in contact with pigs. Ebola Virus More than 2,400 people have died in the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and the virus reached American soil for the first time in August, when infected healthcare workers were flown home and treated. The illness involves vomiting and sometimes internal and external bleeding. Transmission is possible only through shared bodily fluids, so unless you're traveling to affected countries, risk of exposure is low. (If visiting West Africa, check the CDC website for travel advisories.). Norovirus This so-called stomach flu (it's not related to influenza) causes vomiting and diarrhea and usually lasts one to three days. You can catch it by eating contaminated food or being exposed to germs from an infected person. It made news after spreading on cruise ships earlier this year. Washing your hands often MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) First reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, this respiratory illness causes fever, cough and shortness of breath and has infected nearly 900 people, with a 30% fatality rate. Research suggests that transmission may be airborne and that camels have helped it spread. But so far, cases in the U.S. have been limited to two people who traveled abroad. Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Outbreaks in the U.S. have killed several infants and sickened thousands of adults and kids in the past two years with flulike symptoms and a persistent cough. Making sure your vaccines are up-to-date can lower your risk. West Nile Virus About one in five people infected with this mosquito-borne virus, found throughout the U.S., will develop a fever, rash, headache or joint pain; one in 100 will get a neurological illness such as meningitis. To keep bugs at bay, wear insect repellent containing DEET, get rid of standing water in your yard and screen or close doors and windows. Chikungunya The chiungunya virus is contacted from tiger mosquito was 1st reported in the Caribbeans in 2013 and symptoms include fever joint pains cough etc. this articles has explained the different strains of flu viruses and the role of vaccines to prevent them.

Dil Bole Hadippa: Bollywood Starlet in Dude Drag – By Andrew Wright When the movie Dil Bole Hadippa (the title translates to “Heart Says Hooray”) was playing in a theater in suburban Detroit, I invited a group of friends to see it with me. [This was in 2009; it is now available on DVD.] I had a little bit of hope that someone else would see what I get from Bollywood; I hoped the movie would help explain why I, a white guy who speaks almost no Hindi, had increasing interest in these films. One friend commented before the movie started, "Usually I have to go to the art institute to see a foreign film like this." I laughed a little, because I could tell she was expecting a "foreign film," something artsy and gritty. I thought of the films that had this reputation—Slumdog Millionaire, Born Into Brothels, etc. American and English films about India tend to focus on the urban chaos of Kolkata and Mumbai, but this is set in rural Panjab, with long shots of open green fields, temples rising from the landscape. It might be a very different movie than she expected. I wondered, though, if my friend hadn't read the description I'd emailed of the plot: Veera, an Indian girl who wants to play cricket, dresses as a boy so she can join the team. Another friend who declined the invitation said, "It sounds like an Amanda Bynes movie," and he was exactly right. It has all the elements you would expect from a cross-dressed sports comedy: emotional speeches about her passion for the sport, training montages, locker-room awkward embarrasments, and of course, a climactic match won by our plucky protagonist at the last minute. It also has the Bollywood trappings: songs, dances, family melodrama, and a fifteen-minute intermission. But I've found, in my exploration of popular Hindi films, it's never quite so simple. Even the goofiest Bollywood films, those that represent he most bubble-gum side of the genre, even those will have moments where they actually say something important. They are the way that India learns about India. The movie stars the ever-charming Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor. Mukerji plays Veera, or, when decked out in a turban and fake beard, Veer. When she is hiding out on the cricket team, Kapoor's character Rohan is the taskmaster coach. When they meet elsewhere, with Veera as Veera, they bicker with romantic tension. Eventually, Veera makes up the lie that she's Veer's sister, which leads to some predictable scenes where Rohan asks Veer whether she might be romantically interested. It is a predictable, silly movie; it's not an art film. But then there are deeper reasons I find it worth watching. A religious theme runs through Dil Bole Hadippa, which might be lost on audiences without knowledge of Indian culture. In the opening scenes, Veera kneels before photos of famous cricket players, and marks their foreheads with turmeric paste, the same way Hindus mark the foreheads of holy statues. When she enters the cricket ground, she touches the ground, then touches her heart, another ritual from Hindu temples. I know, some Americans joke that in some places, football is a religion, but this, like most Bollywood, goes to an extreme. But the real thematic depth of Dil Bole Hadippa comes in the binational character of Rohan. At the film's beginning, Rohan is a cricket star in England. His father, who owns an Indian team, calls him back to India to help win an important match. In an exposition-heavy early scene, they discuss that his parents divorced because his mother couldn't handle living in India, and his father couldn't handle England. His father is played by Anupam Kher, who is a go-to actor in Bollywood for fatherly roles; he plays the lovable-old-dad perfectly. When Rohan mentions his mother, his father sighs. "England's cold has turned Yamini's heart cold too."

When their car breaks down, they hitch a ride with a passing truck, where Veera is riding in the back with the livestock. "You from English?" she asks him, and they get into a dialogue in broken English/Hindi where he seems to think of her as a yokel, and she thinks of him as a British intruder of sorts. He tells her that Indians in England make India proud; she believes that he's not Indian at all. "This my India," she tells him, "Hey Ji, handle with care." That, for me, is where the heart of the movie lies. Whose India is it? Who does India belong to, and who belongs to India? In recent years, Bollywood films have shifted their attention to a worldwide diaspora, brought home. In the structure of a silly little cross-dressing sports movie, the character of India itself develops into a precious enigma. While we were watching the movie, one of my friends got up and left during the second song-anddance sequence, a lascivious upbeat number called "Bhangra Bistar" in which Veera makes her first appearance in male drag and dances with a seductive "item girl." Later, the friend who left told me, "I didn't like the music at all. I do like Indian music. I mean, I like Ravi Shankar and all that." I realized that a non-Indian saying "I like some Indian music, like Ravi Shankar" is like a white person saying "I like some rap music, like De La Soul and KRS-ONE." That is, Ravi Shakar doesn't represent what Indian music really is to Indian people. It's not meditative and mystical--at least, not all the time--and it's not fixed in time and history. Bollywood trends change all the time, and current Hindi music is upbeat, clever, and sometimes quite noisy, much like India itself. An American who likes world music and foreign films might name-drop Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, but the college kids in Delhi prefer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the younger nephew who contributes ballads to action movies. It's possible that six years ago, when I took my first trip to India, I was looking for an ancient land, for an exotic Shangri-La, for Ravi Shankar's India. That may be why my first trip was puzzling and unsatisfying, why I wanted to go home. I began to understand the mind of India--not an ancient place, but the place that's here and now. The land of movies is the land that Indians dream about, the sign of their dreams and aspirations. I'd like to be part of that world, even though I know that I'm even more a foreigner than the London boy Rohan in the film. But when I immerse myself in Bollywood, at least I can see a glimpse of that world, and I can pretend like it's home.

“Let The Colors Of Holi Spread The Message Of Peace And Happiness” -Parnika Kumar Has anyone wondered what the significance of Holi in a Hindu life is? To start off, Holi is a festival of colors, and is known as Phagwa and Holaka in other parts of the world. It is an annual festival celebrated all over India, on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (early March). It is a time when people celebrate the beauty of spring, and when they forget their daily worries, and join hands as brothers and sisters to feel the pleasure. Holi is a festival that has been practiced since ancient times, mainly as an agricultural festival, celebrating the arrival of spring. It is a time when man and nature come together to say bye to the gloom of winter and welcome the vibrant colors and liveliness of the spring. The festival also commemorates and admires a few events from the Hindu mythology. Because of this fact, it is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. Since most of you are familiar with the story of Prahalad surviving in the fire, I would like to introduce you to two different stories, from the Hindu mythology. The first one is about Radha and Krishna. Krishna would usually complain to his mother, Yashoda, of his dark complexion and wondered why Radha was so fair. His mom gave him a solution, of applying colors on Radha’s face and seeing how her complexion changed! The other story was about Lord Shiva and Madana (the God of Love). Madana wanted to test Lord Shiva’s meditative nature. For this, he appeared in front of Shiva in the form of a beautiful nymph. Lord Shiva immediately recognized Madana, and out of rage, shot fire out of his third eye, which reduced the nymph to ashes. This is sometimes called the basis of Holi’s bonfire. Therefore as one can see, Holi is a very important festival among Hindus and holds a special place in their life. HAPPY HOLI!!

Holi – By Pranavi Holi is the Indian festival of colors. It is celebrated all over India. It marks the end of evil like Holika and Hiranyakashap and the beginning of good like Prahalad. It is usually celebrated during the end of February or the beginning of March. Holika is burnt a day before Holi. In Holi we throw colored powder called Gulaal or Abeer at each other and spray water on each other using water guns called pichkari. In different regions, it is celebrated in different ways, in India. Lathmaar holi of Mathura is very famous. People sing and dance, eat sweets and enjoy with their friends during Holi. I love eating malpua made by my mom. It is very cold in U.S.A during Holi so we do not spray water and play only with Gulaal. A common saying during Holi is “ Bura na mano holi hai “ .

Diversity Day by Kashvi Mohan at her pre school on March 18, 2015 Rainbow Preschool at Troy Community center celebrated diversity day on 18th March. 3 families - Indian, Italian and Filipino - were invited to share their culture with 4-5 year old preschoolers. While adults from each ethnicity educated kids about their culture, here is a little blurb by our 4 years 10 months daughter, Kashvi Mohan!

My favorite food is chicken curry with naan, and spinach with cottage cheese. Finally, let me tell you about my dress. I am wearing an Indian dress called salwar suit. Thank you!

Holi-Origin and Influences -By Shikhar Verma Holi is the festival of colors and love. Everyone colors each other’s faces on that day. There are many legends of how Holi originated but these are more of the prevalent ones. One story is about Hiranyakashipu and how his son Prahlad defied him and worshipped Vishnu even after Hiranyakashipu gained almost full invincibility and demanded that everyone worship him.No matter what punishment Prahlad was given he endured it and carried on his devotion. Finally his evil aunt-Holika-tricked him into sitting on a pyre with her. She had a cloak that protected her from burns while Prahlad was not.As the fire burned the cloak glid over to Prahlad and Holika burned. This the origin of the day of the Holika fire before holi. The story of the origin of Holi is when Krishna didn’t know if Radha would like him because of his skin color. His mother, tired of the desperation, asks him to approach Radha and color her face in any colour he wanted. This he does, and Radha and Krishna became a couple. The playful coloring of the face of Radha has henceforth been commemorated as Holi.

SAVING OUR PLANET By Vishesh Verma Introduction Earth is divided into 2 general types of environments – one of them is Land and another is Oceans. The Oceans cover 75% of Earth and land covers about 25%. Both these Environments are in danger because of Human Activity. Let’s talk about different types of land Environments. Land Environments: Forests Forests Area around the World is being reduced to create more farm lands and space for people to live due to increase in population. This destruction of trees is Deforestation. Deforestation results in loss of not only the tree and plants but also Animals that rely on trees for their existence. Many of the Animals get killed and sold for souvenirs, food, medicine and many other are used to make accessories. Mountains Many of our Mountains across the World are being destroyed due to Mountaintop removal mining (MTR) for removal of coal seams like in the Appalachian Mountains spread over Ohio, Virginia and Kentucky. The land is deforested before mining operations and causes severe damage to wildlife. Polar Regions The World’s Polar Regions are starting to melt due to the process of Global Warming which can destroy the Polar Caps which will be a result of Wildlife loss if we don’t stop Global Warming. Many of the low lying islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean like Mauritius will become completely under water. Grassland There are many Grassland’s around the World in danger because Grassland’s are made into farms and cities which is a result of loss in wildlife. These all Land habitats around the World which we should start taking care of cause if we don’t a lot of Amazing Creatures and Amazing habitat’s will be gone . Oceans: Deep Sea The Deep Sea is in danger in many types of ways. 1st is that Human’s dump a lot of plastic into the Oceans. It could hurt the Fish’s and other Creatures who live in the Ocean are if they eat it and it might also affect the Food Chain. And our Oil rigs play a bad role. If an Oil Spill occurs then it will hurt the Ocean Creatures and make it nearly impossible for them to live.

The Coral Reef There are many ways humans are causing destruction to Coral Reefs around the World. Coral reefs are very beautiful but if Human’s keep destroying Coral Reef’s many amazing Creatures of the Coral Reef will go Extinct. One of the Ways Humans are harming the Coral Reef is Global Warming which causes Coral’s to bleach which can make the Algae Die or move and that will make the Coral have no Color and there will be a White Limestone Shell that will shine through the Coral and can Destroy the Coral. Another way is that they also blow up Explosives and Dynamite in the Coral Reef which will stun the Fish and Destroy the Coral Reef and then they sell it in Restaurants and Markets. Conclusion: If we don’t start taking care of our planet many habitats and amazing creatures will go extinct. But there are still many ways Humans can still save our Planet. We can put Endangered Animals on the Endangered Species list We can make reserves and Sanctuary and National Parks where our Animals will be free we can conserve energy and water , we can also reduce the number of plastics we use Don’t introduce plants and animals in a wrong place where they shouldn’t be thus endangering and competing with the local species Support agencies or Organizations which working to protect the Ocean Don’t feed Animals with Human Food , and Finally, recycle and reuse.

What Type of Dessert Are You? By: Shikha Raman, Grade 9

If you answered mostly B’s: You are ice cream! You’re sweet and delicious but you’ve got multiple types of flavors and personalities. People love you even though you’re ordinary and everyone wants to be around you! If you answered mostly C’s: You are cake! You are just so attractive to everyone; people clamor for your glamor until they take a bite and realize what is inside is actually quite plain and bland. But don’t worry! You’re still a favorite!

2 Great Countries from the World By Satyam Sinha HHHHHHHelllllllloooooooo everybody! (Cough cough) Today we are going to talk about 3 AMAzing countries. We will talk about their: geography, military, and law enforcements (all the fun stuff). First up we have…… (Silent pause) the United States of America (clap clap)!!!!!! The third largest country in the world, the United States spans the North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific, covering a huge range of ecosystems and some of the world's most extreme geographic features. The lowest point of elevation in the U.S.A. is Badwater Basin, in Death Valley, California, at 282 ft. (86 m) below sea level. Death Valley also holds the record for the highest recorded air temperature on Earth, 134 °F (57°C). The highest point in the U.S.A. is on Mount McKinley at 20, 320 ft. (6,190 m) in Alaska. The United States Armed Forces are the Federal Military Forces of the U.S.A. they consist the Amy, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard. The president is the military’s commander in chief. The U.S. Armed Forces has significant capabilities in both defense and power projection. Thanks to its advanced and powerful equipment and its widespread deployment of force around the world. The U.S.A. has different types of law enforcements. The police you see every day are either city or state police. They do the regular stuff such as speeding, stolen cars, checking houses and stuff like that. You barely see the SWAT team. They are the police military. They come in when there are homicides or an armed wanted person is in a specific house. Then we have the FBI. These people come when there are like terrorists or terrorists attacking. Now let’s move on to the next country. Now we have… (Silent pause) India!!!! (Clap, clap) In India, there are hot, steamy summers. They can grow tea there. It only snows in Jammu & Kashmir where there are mountains. India is the 7th largest country in the world. It is the 2nd most populated country in the world. India is the 4th best in the military. India had gone to war with Pakistan 4 times and china 1 time. India won all 4 times with Pakistan and lost with China. India had started its nuclear missiles testing very soon after Pakistan started. It had everything like the U.S.A. India has a superintendent of police in every city in every state. I have 2 grandfathers that are both superintendent’s in UP and Bihar. One of them told me that there is not a SWAT team but there is a special response unit. I understood that every country has its own priorities and own basic needs. Today, I wrote about two great countries in the world. I guarantee you that these two countries will make huge change in the world.
