Dear Friends and Family, On behalf of the MIBIHAR Board of Trustees, Committee members, we would like to wish you a very happy and prosperous Diwali. You all may be aware that in the beginning of this year, at the request from many of you; we have formally launched MIBIHAR - Friends of Bihar and Jharkhand in Michigan. As part of fulfilling legal formalities, MIBIHAR got registered as a nonprofit organization with the state and federal agencies, in 2012. Also for obtaining tax exempt status (501 c3), a team is diligently working on it, and is likely to be acquired soon. We also kicked off Life Membership drive in July this year and are happy to acknowledge its success due to the addition of numerous families to our community and still growing. During the inception year itself, we are proud of our achievements. One of them was organizing Bihar Diwas, where people from all communities participated and enjoyed Bihari culture, food and entertainment program. The other significant event was the Summer Picnic, filled with ecstatic outdoor fun and delicious food as well as entertainment including karaoke, DJ, dancing, cricket and countless others. We also participated in AIWA First Leadership summit, Gleaner’s Food drive, India Day Parade and the Rouge River Rescue in the local Michigan community. We thank our members, volunteers, guests, advertisers and sponsors for their support. We also sincerely thank our committee members and volunteers for their continued support in making today’s event a success. Please enjoy the evening and once again a very Happy Dussehra and Diwali to all. With best wishes

Dussehra – Victory of Good over Evil Dussehra is an important festival of the Hindus. It is celebrated before Diwali. Lord Rama killed the demon king Ravana on this day. Dussehra gives the message that there is always victory of truth over evil. Lord Rama's life is enacted in public grounds. It is called 'Ram Lila'. Many people go to different parks to see 'Ram Lila'. It continues for ten days. On the tenth day, huge effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Meghnad filled with crackers are erected. Then they are put to fire in a big open ground, Many people gather to see this sight. Children enjoy the fireworks and the fair. We should learn lessons from Lord Rama's life. In the US we don’t celebrate it like we do in India. Here most people, like me, go to the temple and pray there. It is an amazing event/festival to experience. I enjoy it very much.

A Diwali of Two Worlds By: Shreya Raman

Diwali, “The Festival of Lights,” is one of the main Indian festivals and generally celebrated in the month of either October or November. There are many stories that explain the origins of Diwali; the most common is of Sri Ram. In the Ramayan, Dasharath, the King of Ayodha, banished Ram, Lakshman, and Sita on his wife’s insistence. During the exile, Sita was tricked by the demon king who kidnapped her and took her to Lanka. Although they searched for many months, Ram and Lakshman could not find Sita. With the help of Hanuman ji, they found Sita imprisoned, and all prepared for battle. It was one of the greatest and longest battles, and ended when Ram ji shot Ravan. Sita was rescued, and they decided to go home. After fourteen years, Lord Ram had returned to Ayodhya, and the entire kingdom celebrated by lighting many rows of diyas. Thus began Diwali, a triumph for Good over Evil. In India, the Diwali festivities start at Dussehra with the lighting of diyas and lamps. Houses are decorated and a Lakshmi puja is organized. The women do aarti and pass out pious prashad. Extravagant Rangolis line the entrance of the houses, which have thoroughly been cleaned. Delicacies such as dal poori, curry badi, and kheer are cooked and shared among neighbors. Shops stay open into late afternoon with hopes of a prosperous year ahead. Diwali gifts such as sweets, dry fruits, silver coins, and silver dishes are distributed among family and friends. Around every street corner, you can find Ramlilas, a dramatic reenactment of the stories from Ramayan. As the night progresses, everyone sets of firecrackers and enjoys the bright illuminations. Even though Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in the United States, it is still a large festival celebrated by many communities. Schools, businesses, and Indian organizations get involved in the celebrations and spread their well wishes to all Hindus. Indian stores sell jewelry and traditional outfits like saris and lehengas, as well as murtis and agarbattis. Women decorate their palms with mehendi and wear fine jewelry. Indian stores have many sales on assorted sweets, savories, and herbs. Many Hindus decorate their homes with lights, candles, and torans and pujas are performed in the honor of Lakshmi and Ganesh. Family and friends all gather to set off firecrackers and the night skies are filled with sparks and splendor. America and India, although thousands of miles away, are one in the same. The wonderful celebration of Diwali joins Hindus all around the world to celebrate a festival of hope, faith, and virtue.

Chanakya Chanakya (Vishnugupta - 370-283 BCE) was a great teacher, statesman, philosopher, thinker and royal advisor. Many great people including aristocrats and people from royal families were his students. Chanakya went to Takshashila, a world famous University for all kinds of education. He lived in Pataliputra (Today’s Patna in Bihar, India). Here are some of my favorite Chanakya Sutras: 

One should first think how the work would be done and what would be the benefit of it, how much time is it going to take? Will this work and not be problematic to others etc. before starting a work? The work that is done without properly thinking before creates problems later on.

Enemies always attack at the weak points; hence No one should know your weaknesses.

Giving grief to others is the very nature of the villains; they never miss any chance of doing so, since it is their nature.

Everyone is your friend in good times but a true friend is one who remains the same in fortune and misery.

A person who leaves you in bad times is not a friend, but a selfish person

A telltale is left even by their own kinsmen. Those who tell the things they hear from one person to the other lose their trust in society, even his own people are scared of him and stay away.

For the success in a task only being courageous or having funds or the help of friends is not sufficient. But one must also possess ''Brains'', a person may be very courageous or rich but if he does not use his brain while performing the task, success is not certain for him.

A wise person should never tell what is in his heart to an idiot because first he will not understand it, and secondly he will never keep it to himself only.

A lion does not eat grass even if he is very hungry; similar the great souls never leave the path of Dharma in any situation. They always save their true great character.

The great soul’s life is full of experience, hence if there certain laws in a society then they should be respected because there is certain benevolence hidden in them. Rachana Gupta November 10, 2012

Diwali Diwali is a festival celebrated throughout north India. This is also celebrated in south India. Diwali Festival is celebrated with light and fire crackers. We do puja for both goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha. Goddess Laxmi gives knowledge and money. Lord Ganesha gives wisdom and happiness. There is another story. Diwali is celebrated because Lord Ram slayed Ravana and came to Ajodhya with Sita. Diwali is going to be fun. I am sure that you will also like it and you should not be afraid of crackers. You should be happy because it is Diwali. Satyam Sinha

entry level phones. Industry spending on advertising to children has increased during the last decade from $100 million in 1990 to more than $2 billion in 2000.  The issue of safety and the impact of cell phones on the developing brain is still unresolved. The FDA has taken the position that there is no evidence that cell phones can cause harm. The use of headsets is recommended, however. When is a child ready for a cell phone? Cell phones have become a status symbol, and even young children are clamoring for them. The decision to give a child a cell phone should depend not only on need but also on whether or not s/he can be responsible for taking care of it. Children have been known to lose the phone, bury it in a backpack, forget to turn it on, lend it to a friend, etc. Several cell phones are specifically designed for younger children; they have no frills and have built-in parental controls, such as limits on who can call and who can be called, lack of internet access or text messaging capability, and plans with prepaid minutes that can't be exceeded.

Choosing a hospital could be the most important decision you’ll ever make.

School policy Believing that phones interfere with academic productivity and concentration, most schools have policies about their use, such as not allowing cell phones to be used in class, no cell phone rings at school, and vibrate-only calls in an emergency. Some schools permit the use of phones only in the parking lots and bus and parent pickup spots. Guidelines for parents - Monitor your children's use of all technological devices. - Take precautions with your children's use of cell phones. Text messaging enables children and adolescents to be in touch with and to make plans with people without parental knowledge. - Know your children's cell phone contact list. - Be specific about cell phone use and set up specific rules about how and when the phone will be used. Set a limit on how much time children can use each month and how many text messages they can send and receive. - Plan for cell phone costs. Together with teenagers, investigate all options, such as the possible advantages of adding a line to a parent's phone. Monitor the monthly cell phone bill to see how children are spending their minutes and discuss the results with them. Keep track of additional service costs, such as ring tones, photos and text messages. - Determine how teenagers will contribute to the costs. - Emphasize and enforce the rule that teens should never use a cell phone while driving. - Establish rules of etiquette, such as never using a cell phone within 20 feet of another person, phones should be turned off in places where they might disturb other people, private conversations should not take place in public places. - While cell phones have many advantages for parents and children, it is important to keep in mind the changing needs of children at different ages to insure their healthy development. - Parents should note that excessive use of cell phone has been linked to cancer.

Best Wishes from Dr. Niru Prasad Kids as young as 6 or 7 are asking their parents for cell phones! Are the parents to blame, because we spend so much time talking on our cell phones? Or, are kids this young really getting cell phones from their parents? While there are a lot of valid reasons to provide your child with a cell phone when he or she is ageappropriate, there are also a lot of valid reasons NOT to give in to this indulgence. The following tips may help you decide when your child is ready to have a cell phone of their own. Kids and Cell Phones: Use and Abuse Do you know where your kids are? For many parents the answer is a resounding yes; they always know where their kids are. Cell phones have changed family life in many ways. They provide parents with peace of mind, and they're great in emergencies. Family members can always reach each other or call 911. Cell phones are also convenient and time-saving. Kids can let parents know where they are, when they need to be picked up, when they'll be late, and just generally what's happening. Parents can let children know if their plans change, whether they'll be late, and where to meet. In many ways, cell phones make life easier and safer. The downside of cell phones As with many technological innovations, there are some possible negative aspects of cell phones that parents should be aware of:  Cell phones are not just for talking. As the technology becomes more and more sophisticated, kids can use cell phones to do lots of other things without their parents' knowledge. With some phones kids can take pictures, text message or surf the Web for videos and games. They can also download pictures, videos, and music. Cell phones allow kids to keep their contacts secret and can facilitate contact with bad influences. The Office of National Drug Control Policy has reported that some teens are using technology and the Internet to get drug information, and cell phones provide instant access to information and sources of drugs. According to their report, 60% of teens have their own cell phones and 19 million teens instant message.  New features such as color and added power may provide games and videos of questionable content. Game ratings are not available on cell phones, so parents will have less knowledge or control of their children's activities than they have of children's use of home computers.  Cell phones offer opportunities for undesirable behavior, such as cheating on tests or teen dating abuse. Teens have reported that they have been called names, harassed, put down by their partner, or asked to engage in sex through cell phones and texting. They have also reported that boyfriends/girlfriends sharing private or embarrassing pictures/videos on cell phones and computers is a serious problem.  Since parents have demonstrated that they're willing to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing where their kids are, cell phone plans, particularly family plans, are proliferating. Preteens and teens represent a significant source of revenue for phone manufacturers, and younger children are also being targeted with the marketing of simple

Stress and How to Lessen Its Impacts As a high school student I can see and feel how much stress people have these days. Stress is a change in the natural function of the body and mind. Stress appears initially as mental, emotional, or physical resistance. We have the ability to reduce non-preferred stress by telling ourselves and others how we feel and what we want. Stress tells the body to slow down and take better care of ourselves. Festivals are here so that we can enjoy ourselves with these simple steps: 1. Breathe when you feel tense; take 10 slow, deep breaths in through your nose, and out through your mouth. 2. Exercise, walk, stretch, and move about. Staying physically fit keeps you mentally fit, emotionally calm, and at peace. 3. Meditate 15 minutes a day. Take time to relax, sit, breathe deeply, and quiet your mind. Record in-sights and dreams in a journal. 4. Eat healthy and chew well. Don't eat because you are bored, unhappy, or angry. 5. Drink at least eight (8 oz.) glasses of water a day. This helps flush toxins out of your body. 6. Forgive yourself and others. Slow down, sleep well and enjoy being alive. 7. Communicate with friends and spend time with each other. 8. Quit worrying about the future. Concentrate on what you can do now. 9. Write down what you have to do. Keeping a planner helps plan things you need to do. 10. Allow yourself to say “NO” to some requests. Don't over commit yourself. Put yourself first; say “YES” to yourself. 11. Re-order your priorities. If you are not happy, choose to do some-thing new. 12. Make a commitment to expand your spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well-being. 13. Your most valuable and limited resource is your time. Value it, so that others will. 14. Do not listen to, encourage, or spread gossip. It damages your credibility and others. 15. Don't try to solve other people’s problems. 16. Ask questions. When you are not sure, or don't know, get information before taking action. 17. Become a solution provider for problems, not just a problem discoverer. 18. Be honest to yourself and others around you. 19. Respect your own ideas, feelings and choices; and others’ too. Some fruits/vegetables may also help reduce stress:  Oranges contain Vitamin C, reducing stress and blood pressure.  Sweet Potatoes contain beta-carotene and other vitamins; its fiber helps your body process the carbohydrates in a slow and steady manner.  Apricots are rich in magnesium, a stress-buster and natural muscle relaxant.  Almonds are packed with vitamins B and E, which help boost your immune system.  Avocados have monounsaturated fats and potassium which helps lower blood pressure (avocados have more potassium than bananas).  Broccoli, kale, and other green, leafy vegetables are full of vitamins that help replenish the body in times of stress.
