Culture is the most powerful factor in an organization. It can be defined as “the collective way we do things around here.”
At Hedrick Brothers, the corporate culture is created as the result of the internal communication and behaviors that tell us what is valued in the company. Since the beginning of our company in 1979, our foundational principles have remained unchanged: be relational, maintain the highest level of integrity, deliver quality construction, and keep our commitment as strong at the end of the project as it is at the beginning. Our team is dedicated to preserving these values and work ethic that define the environment of Hedrick Brothers.

An employee-developed Social Contract defines the core values and work ethic of Hedrick Brothers. It is the cornerstone of how we have agreed to treat each other internally and externally.
“We, the employees of Hedrick Brothers, commit to creating and maintaining an atmosphere of trust and encouragement, ensuring healthy relationships, and continuing to build a high-performance company.”
WE SHALL:
■ Respect one another, treating each other professionally and with integrity.
■ Communicate openly and honestly with each other.
■ Listen to each other’s concerns and ideas with attentiveness and discernment.
■ Honor the confidences of others.
■ Strive for excellence by consistently giving our personal best to each other and our customers.
■ Be accountable for our actions.
■ Foster a fun and friendly workplace.
Following these principles, we shall immediately address any personal disagreements, maturely and discreetly, and apologize if necessary. Then, we shall focus on the relevant issues, making every effort to reach a mutually agreeable solution. If we cannot settle our disagreements, we shall involve a mutually agreed-upon mediator and respect the mediator’s solution.

FUNDAMENTALS
1. Think of client’s needs. We will know how clients use their facilities. We will understand our client’s needs and what is important to them. The construction process will be enjoyable.
2. Check your ego at the door. Our own egos and personal agendas must never take precedence over doing what is best for the team. Being concerned with who gets credit, who looks good, and who looks bad is counter-productive. Making the best decision for the good of the enterprise must always be paramount.
3. Practice A+ ness as a way of life. Regard everything you touch as a personal statement bearing your signature. Take pride in the quality of what you produce.
4. Take extra time to do things right the first time. Don’t take shortcuts. The goal is to get it right not simply to get things done.
5. Seek to create win/win solutions. Learn to think from another’s perspective. Discover what others need and find solutions that meet their needs while still fulfilling our own. Win/Win solutions are always longer lasting and more satisfying than Win/Lose solutions.
6. Practice blameless problem solving. Treat mistakes as learning opportunities. Focus on the
following questions: What are our best options to solve the problem? What have we learned that can keep us from repeating the mistake? How will we integrate lessons learned into new behaviors or practices?
7. Make decisions that reflect a reverence for long-term relationships. Our primary goal is the long-term success of the company. We must take charge of responsibilities and not delay in making difficult decisions.
8. Maintain a solution orientation rather than a problem orientation. Focusing on problems drains energy. Understand the problem then apply your creativity, spirit, and enthusiasm toward the development of solutions.
9. You reap what you sow. Kindness begets more kindness. Trust begets more trust. Ideas have consequences. Good ideas and good motives produce good results.
10. Keep things fun. The world has much larger problems than our own. Keep perspective. Be light-hearted. Always smile.
11. Maintain a positive attitude. Be a positive force for good. Seek wisdom. Make the best of the experiences and resources you have.
12. Practice the “human touch.” Treat people as individuals and show them you care. Look for opportunities to acknowledge their uniqueness and their humanness.
13. Communicate to be understood. Know your audience. Write and speak in a way that they can understand: correct, clear, and concise. Use the simplest possible explanations.
14. Set and ask for expectations. We judge situations not by what happens, but by our expectations of outcomes. Learn to create mutually understood expectations.
15. Follow-up on everything. Internal and external clients rely on us and we rely on others. Record a follow-up date for every action and take responsibility for its completion.
16. Be punctual. Be on time for all appointments, phone calls, meetings, and promises. How you relate to time sends a message about how you relate to other commitments. Punctuality is a reflection of respect for others.
17. Listen generously. Learn to listen for the contribution in each other’s speaking versus listening from our assessment, opinions, and judgments.
18. Speak straight.
Speak honestly in a way that conveys our intentions. Make clear and direct requests. Be willing to contribute ideas or take positions that may result in conflict when it’s necessary to reach our objectives.
19. Be there for each other. Look for opportunities to mentor and train others and be supportive of each other’s success. Operate from the point of view that we’re all in this together and that any one of us cannot win at the expense of someone else or the company. Look for each other’s greatness and provide support where needed.
20. Honor commitments.
Do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it. If a commitment cannot be fulfilled, notify others early and agree upon a new commitment to be honored.
21. Trust.
Increase speed by building trust using principles of credibility, consistent behavior, alignment with
structures, systems and symbols, reputation, and contribution.
22. Take responsibility. Don’t be a “victim.” Take ownership and carry out your assignments with your goals and objectives in mind. Ask for what you need and take full responsibility for your success.
23. Appearance counts. Your personal appearance makes a strong statement about the pride you take in your performance. Dress neatly and professionally. The appearance of our office makes a similar statement about the quality of our work. Take responsibility to see that our office environment is clean, neat, and professional.
24. Being organized makes a difference.
Maintain a clean and orderly work area. Use an effective task management system to keep track of outstanding issues and responsibilities. Maintain an orderly filing system.
25. Double check all work. Proofread all letters, e-mails, spreadsheets, etc. for accuracy and correctness. Accuracy is a reflection of A+ness.
26. Look ahead and anticipate. Be better prepared by anticipating future needs and addressing them today. Identify and understand issues in a timely manner. Strategically and critically think several steps ahead to avoid the mistakes that come with last-minute actions.
27. Have a bias for structure and rebar.
Look to create systems and processes that support our ability to perform with consistency and share them with the team.
28. The quality of your answer is directly related to the quality of your questions.
Learn to ask yourself, “What information is missing, that if I knew, then the best course of action would become self-evident?”
29. Be quick to ask and slow to judge. Learn to gather the facts before making judgments. Be curious about additional information that may yield a more complete picture.
30. No is not an option. We will always give an option if we cannot provide a specific request.
COMMUNITY
Hedrick Brothers believes corporate philanthropy and community involvement are important elements to a well-rounded business. Our company and employees actively support charitable organizations and professional associations through donations of time, talent, in-kind, monetary, and material contributions. We all live here, work here, and are dedicated to volunteering in our community.
VISION
Build the BEST CULTURE that builds the BEST BUILDINGS
The Hedrick Brothers team is honored to be a community partner for the South Florida Chapter of Xcel Strategies, a soft skills, job skills, and trade skills mentoring group for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 25.
The first Xcel Virtual Design and Construction Mobile Training Unit was unveiled in June 2022, which features job skills and hands-on virtual design and construction training. The mobile training unit was designed by our Director of Virtual Design and Construction, Butch Carmichael. Butch, Jorge Ramos, and Vitor Da Silva serve as VDC mentors for the program. After her 2023 summer internship, Xcel graduate Karlie Victor joined the Hedrick VDC team and now volunteers as a program mentor.
The Hedrick Brothers Space Coast team is developing future construction professionals and craftsmen by providing hands-on and classroom training to Cocoa High School students in Brevard County. As a thank you, the students from the Spring 2021 class presented our team with a handmade wooden USA flag. As proud members of the Brevard County community, our new flag hangs at the entrance to our Melbourne office for everyone to enjoy!
