I

WARM WISHES TO OUR READERS

influential-magazine.com

t’s the Festive Season! Yes, it’s one of the most joyous times of the year again, and I can’t believe how soon we’ll be welcoming the year 2020. As a busy Publisher, I’m well into the new year. I’m sure most of you can agree with me the years just keep going faster and faster. It’s funny how this happens with age. I can recall, as a youngster, time seemed to move at a snail’s pace. Now, every month seems as but a blink of an eye and so it’s imperative to live each day to its fullest. We’re not quite to 2020 yet, and I commit to slow the pace and create lasting memories during the last couple weeks of 2019. Putting our November / December edition together has been a highlight for my team and me. We’re honored to have partnered with a variety of contributing writers, each a pundit. We hope their expert knowledge and profound insight serves to enlighten, inspire, and influence. We share with you tips on how to find your core values and how they can help you through your struggles and we thank Emeka Anyiam PhD, LMFT, Founder and CEO of Embridge Counseling Services for the expert guidance. We also offer suggestions for helping those who find the festive season a challenge. Beyond these articles, we share with you thought-provoking content focused on Health & Wellness, Fashion & Style, and Food & Beverage topics among others, and of course thrilling content on how to prepare for this hectic but thrilling time of year. We hope you enjoy this edition and take away something of value and inspiration as we embark upon the close of yet another decade. InFluentials, we encourage you to make each day count as you strive to continue to live your best life! Most Sincerely,

TIPS FOR COPING WITH A FOOD-CENTRIC SEASON

D

uring the festive season, no matter where you turn, you find food, food, and more food. From vendor treats filling the office breakroom to celebratory dinners with family and friends, virtually everything and everyone seems to be focused on food. For someone working to overcome an eating disorder, it makes the festive season anything but festive. Eating disorders affect 20 million females and 10 million males in the United States and can be diagnosed in boys and girls 7 years old and sometimes even younger. Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice; they are mental health disorders similar to depression, bipolar disease or schizophrenia. It is not an individual choice to develop an eating disorder, but rather severe underlying pathological factors which drive individuals to take part in self-destructive behaviors associated with eating disorders. Genetic, environmental and social factors all play a role in the development of an eating disorder. Interpersonal issues, past trauma, low self-esteem, abuse, co-occurring mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders and unhealthy family and personal relationships can all contribute to the environmental and social factors associated with eating disorders. Even for someone who is well into a successful recovery program, the festive season can trigger unwanted thoughts and comments surrounding food. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

It’s the FESTIVE Season!

Whether you are actively treating your eating disorder or suspect you may have one, you can take steps to make this festive season more comfortable with these tips from eating disorder expert and licensed therapist Dawn Delgado, director of clinical development at Center for Discovery. 1. Always have a safe plan. If you plan on attending a festive season party or gathering, you may want to consult with your dietitian to have a plan beforehand, especially if you feel you may be inclined to binge. If you feel triggered to binge, or if you feel pressured by another individual, create an escape plan, which may mean having a friend accompany you to the party or even come pick you up. Your plan may also involve finding a safe place at the party where you can be alone to gather your thoughts until you feel comfortable re-engaging with others. 2. Be prepared to say “no“. Many individuals, with good intentions, will push food your way. They will want you to try their favorite dessert or their new recipe without understanding your struggle. Know it is OK to say “no” and to take care of yourself in these situations. You can choose to clarify why you are saying “no,” but do not feel obligated to do so. Also give yourself permission to decline joining festive season office parties, family parties or other festive season-themed get-togethers if your recovery could be compromised, or plan to bring a supportive friend. 3. Know your triggers before you engage in social situations. Understanding your triggers and learning how to use coping skills to control them at festive season functions can help keep negative thoughts and self-sabotaging at bay. If there are certain topics of conversation that trigger you then avoid those topics or change the conversation when those topics arise. Be honest with yourself, be honest with others, recognize your emotions and learn to take control of your scenarios.

Supporting a Loved One Watching someone you care for battle an eating disorder can be emotionally challenging, but your love and support can make a big difference during the stressful festive season with these tips from the experts at Center for Discovery:

influential-magazine.com

• •

If you’re uncertain how you can help, just ask then be prepared to listen without judgment. Make it clear you are willing to be a sounding board or assist your loved one in getting to a safe place if he or she is triggered during an event. Voice concerns privately. Public comments about weight, body shape or food choices can only exacerbate the angst your loved one is feeling, and when you put him or her on the

defensive, he or she is less likely to be receptive to your genuine concern. Mindful Eating Tips These simple steps can help you rediscover your natural intuition about food and hunger. These tips can be used all in one meal or you can choose one tip at a time to focus on. When you feel you have mastered one, try a new one. Over time, eating mindfully can become second nature. 1. Practice mindfulness: Start by eating one meal a day in a slower, more aware manner. 2. Hunger check: Before eating, check in with yourself to determine how hungry you are. Are you hungry enough for a meal or just a snack? 3. Emotional check: What are you feeling? Are you happy, content, stressed, bored or something different? 4. Senses check: What type of food are you hungry for? Do you want savory, sweet or salty? Do you want something hot or cold? 5. Time check: Do you have time to sit and savor? Or are you crunched for time? 6. Time crunch: Planning to nourish your body is an act of mindfulness. Taking the time to grab some food or packing food to eat on the go is being mindful that your body needs fuel. 7. Focus: Concentrate on the meal in front of you. Avoid doing other activities while you eat such as working, talking on the phone, watching TV, driving or reading. 8. Savor: While eating, notice the colors, smells, flavors and textures of the food. 9. Food awareness: Notice your reaction to the food you are eating. What do you like, what don’t you like? If you are enjoying your food, savor it. If you don’t like your food, choose something more appealing. 10. Patience and grace: Mindful eating is a practice that takes time to learn and develop. Since there is no judgment in mindful eating, give yourself grace and patience as you learn. (Family Features) l NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

5 Making a Difference It’s the FESTIVE Season!

WAYS TO THANK THOSE THIS FESTIVE SEASON

T

he festive season is a perfect time to not just show these selfless people your appreciation, but also take inspiration from their spirit of generosity. Here are five simple ways to say thank you.

1. Create a thoughtful care package. Put together personalized gift baskets filled with all the things you know they love. Pick up baskets at your local craft store and start by adding treats you know they might not buy for themselves. If your recipient is a foodie, think gourmet jams and spices. If your recipient loves doodling or writing to-do lists, a lovely journal and a set of long-lasting G2 gel ink pens from Pilot are a great pair. Available in more than 25 ink colors, your recipient will be able to color-code tasks or sketch lively bullet journal spreads with ease. Snag a pack for yourself and write a beautiful note to go alongside. 2. Send an anonymous donation to their favorite charity. Consider thanking those behind the scenes doing the hard work of keeping their communities strong by sending an anonymous donation to a charity close to their heart. Many such organizations depend on the financial support of people like you. Whether it’s an animal shelter, a food bank or community center, take a cue from the giving folks around you.

18

3. Give thanks to someone who always gives back. We all know someone who goes beyond their day-today responsibilities to help make the world a better place. Let them know just how much their work is valued by nominating them for the G2 Overachievers Grant. For the fourth year, the grant is recognizing individuals making measurable differences in the lives of others. One exceptional overachiever will be awarded $100,000 to help continue their charitable works and broaden their positive impact. Visit G2Overachievers.com before December 31 to learn more and submit your handwritten nomination. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate someone’s passion for giving and show the impact of their hard work.

THE PEOPLE WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND IN MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS ARE RARELY IN IT FOR RECOGNITION.

4. Give the gift of relaxation. Those always in the service of others could use a good dose of relaxation. Whether it’s with a gift certificate to a spa, entry to a wine tasting or a set of tickets to the movies or a concert, some of the nicest gifts are those that offer someone a chance to unwind. 5. Write a thank you note. There is something so personal about putting pen to paper. In this digital age

of emails and texts, a heart-felt, handwritten letter or card can become a true keepsake. With the right tools, it’s easy to let your feelings flow and craft a meaningful message. So, pick up some nice stationery and a smooth, vibrant G2 gel ink pen to let your loved ones know just how much they impact your life. For those who give all year long, let the festive season be your opportunity to give back. (StatePoint) l NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

FOR MANY FAMILIES, THE FESTIVE SEASON IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE TIME OF YEAR. AMERICANS SPENT OVER $707 BILLION DOLLARS DURING THE 2018 FESTIVE SEASON, ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION, AND IT WOULD BE NO SURPRISE FOR SPENDING TO INCREASE IN 2019.

“I

It is important to ensure you are spending wisely and not turning the new year into a time of new debt,” says Michael McAuliffe, president of Family Credit Management, a non-profit creditcounseling agency. To spend sensibly and with good cheer this season, consider these

you have to shop. While there are some good deals offered during these events, just as frequently, the deals are not super special once you look at the normal price and product reviews. Unfortunately, marketing teams are great at knowing how to access wallets through product placement and signage, and shopping during these times will increase impulse spending and make it much harder to stick to a festive season budget.

wisely: With a tight budget, consider •usingDecorate last year’s decorations or making homemade decorations, as a fun, money-saving project to do with the whole family. While there’s no real need to buy new, expensive decorations every year, if you are so inclined, don’t forget to include that in your festive season budget.

Think about shipping: Online deals might look great, and many times they are. Other times, they’re not really deals at all because of shipping costs. If you are going to shop online, make sure to keep an eye out for free shipping days offered by many retailers and to

Use apps to price check: Technology is great! There are many apps out there to price-check items while you’re shopping, so you can make sure you are getting the best deal. Some retail stores will even adjust the price in-store when you have found a better deal online. Leave the credit cards at home: Put your festive •season budget on a pre-paid debit card or gift card that you can use anywhere. Going shopping with only that card will help ensure that you don’t spend more than your budgeted amount. Not only will it help you stay within budget, but it will also help your purchase stay interest-free. 5

Top FESTIVE SEASON TEMPTATIONS AND How to Avoid Them

22

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

influential-magazine.com

THE FESTIVE SEASON MEANS DELICIOUS FOOD AND PARTIES GALORE. IF YOU’VE BEEN DEDICATED TO MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, THERE’S NO REASON TO THROW AWAY ALL YOUR HARD WORK. YOU JUST NEED TO ADJUST YOUR ROUTINE SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE SEASON GUILT-FREE.

A

ccording to Courtney McCormick, dietitian at Nutrisystem, these are the five biggest festive season temptations and how to manage them.

Temptation #1: Parties: To avoid temptation at festive season gatherings, never walk into one hungry. No amount of willpower will stop you from rushing the dessert table if you arrive on an empty stomach. Before you go, have a good, balanced meal that includes protein, veggies and plenty of water. Even if you do treat yourself to a cookie once there, you’ve done some substantial damage control. Temptation #2: Skipping Workouts: Exercise frequency drops off dramatically once weather gets cold and messy, according to a Gallup poll. If you don’t have a gym membership, investing in a few key pieces of exercise equipment -- bands, kettle bells -- can help you supplement indoor workouts and maintain an active lifestyle in cold weather.

“I always aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. If I’m having a hard day, I break it up into 10-minute increments -- in the morning, afternoon and at night. It makes it much more manageable,” says Marie Osmond, entertainer and Nutrisystem ambassador. Temptation #3: Office Treats: As if your own festive season party indulgences weren’t bad enough, you also have to deal with other people’s leftover treats in your workplace breakroom. To avoid temptation, make sure your meal prep is on point every week and includes snacks to keep you full throughout the day. It’s much easier to politely decline those brownies when you’ve filled up on almonds or light popcorn. Temptation #4: Festive Season Traditions: Turkey with all the trimmings. Gingerbread houses with the kids. As much as we look forward to these traditions, they can take a toll on a healthy lifestyle. This year try focusing less on food and more on shared experiences. Trade the annual cookie bake-off for a day of crafting or ice skating; skip your calorie-laden dessert and become the life of the party by bringing board games to play after dinner. Temptation #5: Liquid Calories: Eggnog, mulled wine, or a festive season martini are delicious ways to celebrate the season, but they add up quickly. Alcohol has almost the same number of calories per gram as fat, and a typical hot chocolate with whipped cream from a coffee shop is around 400 calories. If you’re going to indulge, do so in moderation. Peppermint tea is a festive, tasty alternative as well. For more great tips and tricks on how to stay healthy and happy all season long, visit leaf.nutrisystem.com. Avoiding temptation doesn’t mean avoiding the fun. Just take careful steps to put yourself in a position where it’s easier to make good choices. (StatePoint) l

FOUR STEPS TO BECOMING

THERE SEEMS TO BE GENERAL AGREEMENT IN THE SCIENCE COMMUNITY: NO MATTER WHAT FIELD WE STUDY, WE CAN IMPROVE OUR PERFORMANCE IF WE TRAIN IN THE RIGHT WAY, FOLLOWING A SET OF SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES.

Jeroen De Flander is one of the world’s most influential thinkers on strategy execution and a highly regarded keynote speaker. He is the number 1 bestselling author of Strategy Execution Heroes and The Execution Shortcut and has shared the stage with prominent thinkers such as Michael Porter, Costas Markides, Roger Martin, Robert Kaplan, and David Norton. He has helped more than 36,000 managers in 40+ countries master the necessary leadership skills, and his popular blog has 45,000 weekly readers. Jeroen has also worked with numerous business schools including London Business School, IMD, Vlerick, Solvay and Tias. He has advised 75+ companies including Atos Worldline, AXA, Bridgestone, Brussels Airport, CEMEX, Credit Suisse, GDFSUEZ, Honda, ING, Johnson & Johnson, Komatsu, Nike, and Sony, and is co-founder of the performance factory – a leading research, training, and advisory firm.

W

hen we take a helicopter view of skills development, we discover those who travel ‘the mastery curve’ all the way to the end will go through four distinct stages — no matter what the field.

1. Everyone starts out as a Novice. We ended up here because something triggered our initial interest or someone — a parent, friend, boss, or coworker — got us involved. If interest isn’t constantly triggered, we will quickly drop out. At this point, especially if people are young, focus should be on play rather than practice. If there is practice, focus should be on core principles.

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

FLUENTIAL 29

FEATURE

2. Next, we become Amateur. This stage will take years. At this point, we will have internalized some motivation to feed our interest and practice takes up time in our agenda, often with the help of a teacher or coach. Progress is mainly based on the amount of our practice and can be quite fast. At this stage, there is a risk for arrested development — we keep doing the activity, but we stop improving. We often get this wrong. We think: if we do something long enough, we will get better. If we drive more hours, we become a better driver. If we play more golf, we become a better golfer. If we manage longer, we become a better leader. But research shows us to be wrong. Studies show once a person has reached the level of acceptable performance — this happens in the amateur phase — and automated a matching training approach, the additional years of training don’t lead to improvement. It’s not that when you have driven 10,000 hours, you become a racing car driver, or chipped away balls on the driving range like Tiger Woods. To advance beyond the Amateur stage, we need to push ourselves. Robert Bjork, a psychology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), advocates the concept of Deliberate Difficulty. It’s actively looking for ways to push ourselves beyond the automatic behavior we developed at the acceptable performance level at the Amateur stage.

4. And all the way at the top of the mastery curve, we find the Pathfinders, the top 3 percent. They have absorbed and internalized all the available knowledge that is out there today. Furthermore, they have developed a unique style, based on signature strengths they have honed for many years. To move forward, they must innovate the field and open new avenues for others as well. At this level, we often find individuals with a strong drive to become the best they can be and the ambition to leave a legacy in their chosen field.

3. At the third stage, we find the Expert.

For Experts and Pathfinders, growth slows down as each step forward requires an incredible amount of effort. Why? Because their way of practicing takes place outside their comfort zone and needs to be done for a long period of time. Instead of doing what they are good at and seek out flow, they are constantly seeking out what they are not good at. Then they identify those painful activities that will make them better and do those repeatedly. And after each try, they actively look for feedback so they can identify what isn’t right so they can repeat the most difficult parts. Pushing oneself in this way is cognitively demanding and physically tiring. This process requires near maximal effort, which is generally not enjoyable. Most people can’t last more than a few hours at a time.

Motivation has been deeply internalized. Others who know the expert will call her passionate. They have established themselves in their field — ‘I’m a golfer’, ‘I’m a writer’, ‘I’m a business leader’. And there is a clear commitment to push forward using intensive practice techniques.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

IN BUSINESS

AND LIFE

32

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

influential-magazine.com

IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY STAYING ORGANIZED. LIFE IS BUSY, CHAOTIC AND FAST-MOVING. ALTHOUGH IT CAN BE EASY TO GET DISCOURAGED AT TIMES, THERE ARE WAYS TO ENHANCE ORGANIZATION AND ATTITUDE THROUGH THE PEAKS AND PITS LIFE THROWS AT YOU.

C

arol Lavin Bernick, former executive chairman of beauty conglomerate Alberto Culver, published “Gather As You Go: Lessons Learned Along the Way,” a book sharing insights she’s learned through her many roles as a corporate leader, working mother, philanthropist and founder of the nonprofit organization Enchanted Backpack. Bernick offers these tips to be ready for the good times and difficult situations, highlighting the importance of loving what you are doing in both business and life. 1. Attitude is Key A person who is passionately committed to the success of his or her business – who has an “I-can-doit” attitude – is more likely to succeed. One person can make a difference, and it’s up to you to demonstrate you are one of those people. 2. If You Never Fail, You Will Never Grow If it’s always comfortable and easy, you can’t know the big win. When challenged and stretched, you may have a greater chance to learn. Reach out, get involved and take a risk. Oftentimes, the best talent has

multiple experiences to share and on which to reflect. 3. Credibility is Everything Some of the most important careersaving words are “I don’t know.” Never fake it. If you’re wrong, admit it and correct it. If you’ve made a mistake, fix it and learn from it. If it’s going to take some time to find an answer, set a timetable and stick to it. 4. Complaining Gets You Nowhere People, especially in business, simply do not want to hear complaints. TIPS FOR HOSTING

I

AN AWARD-WINNING

VIEWING PARTY

f you find yourself up next to host, it can feel like the pressure is on to impress. Luckily, hosting doesn’t have to be as difficult as it might seem. Follow these simple tips to make sure your viewing party is anything but basic, and you will be sure to win the award for the host with the most. Step up the snack game: A little creativity goes a long way Snacking is an essential part of any viewing party, and while a bowl of chips could get the job done, creating thematic dishes is key to making the viewing party complete. For award shows, star-shaped treats or cookies cut in the shape of awards will tie in the Hollywood theme, while an island-based reality show might call for tropical fruit kabobs. Instead of pre-making all of the food, let your guests do some of the work! Whether it’s a build-yourown flatbread station, complete with delicious toppings, or a simple popcorn and candy bar, make sure to offer a blend of savory and sweet for a balanced menu.

36

WHETHER IT’S THE LONG-AWAITED PREMIERE OF YOUR FAVORITE DRAMA, THE RETURN OF A HYPED REALITY SERIES, OR THIS SEASON’S BIG AWARD SHOW, THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON TO GATHER YOUR FRIENDS AROUND A SCREEN FOR A VIEWING PARTY!

even more fun as a cocktail mixer. Plus, the tasty flavors, like Brasilia Blueberry and Puna Coconut Pineapple, are sure to transport guests to a flavor paradise - even if heartbreak is happening on-screen.

Set the bar high With the perfect cocktail Spoiler alert: Many party drinks are full of sugar and excess calories. To help your guests enjoy their hors-d’oeuvres - and avoid a punch bowl hangover - opt for a healthier alternative, like Bai. The antioxidantinfused drink contains five calories per serving with no artificial sweeteners, making it the perfect beverage choice for the night. Bai is delicious to drink on its own, and

Comfort is key Make your guests feel at home There’s nothing worse than settling in for a viewing party and realizing there’s no place to sit. When hosting, make sure to think through how many guests you will have, and ensure that there is space for everyone. If you’re limited on traditional seating, floor space can work too! Disperse floor cushions, blankets and extra pillows throughout the viewing room, so

For a tasty, healthier twist on a cocktail favorite, try a Citrus Mule. Pour 4 ounces Bai Costa Rica Clementine, 2 ounces bourbon and 1/2 ounce of lime juice over ice. Top with ginger beer. your guests can get cozy and enjoy the show. Let the games begin Everyone loves a little friendly competition Engage your guests in the fun by creating a customized version of Bingo or trivia. For example, have guests make predictions on who will get sent off the island or create ballots for guests to fill out before an award show. If you’re short on time, there are often templates for upcoming awards shows online, as well as apps that will help you build the questions. A grand prize for whoever wins the most points will keep everyone on their toes! Leave an impression Did someone say swag bags? Everyone knows that swag bags are the most bougie part of a celebrity awards show. And while yours may not include a vacation to Greece and gold-infused face oil, it can still be a fun surprise! Whether you gift your guests their Mule cup - with the recipe card and ingredients to make their own Citrus Mule, a favorite beauty product, or a mini spa kit, everyone loves a treat to take home. Viewing parties help make every on-screen moment more exciting and, with the right people and ambiance, the night is sure to be a smashing success. FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

L

uooif Studio designer, Lena Loffurzzi made her LAFW debut October 11, 2019 night at the Petersen Automotive Museum where she revealed her highly anticipated Spring/Summer 2020 Collection to a packed event made up of LA’s leading fashionistas, stylists and influencers including Actress Lilimar @iamlilimar, Arika Sato @arika and more. Approaching her designs from a story-telling perspective, Lena’s S/S 2020 Collection titled “Second Face” is a continuation of past collections. This season’s collection delves into Lena’s memory and soul and introduces the audience to the power of mystery and imagination. Lena describes this new collection as a bridge between reality and fantasy, very much like Harry Potter’s Platform 9 ¾. Nowadays, too much time is spent “living” instead of “being” and so many have become imprisoned by the shackles of “busy” and buried by dust of “rush”. “My new collection is about using imagination as a way to relish and live in the moment.” says Lena. Luooif Studio’s S/S 2020 collection of dresses and separates are created to take women on a journey of ethereal luxury as told through the Japanese textiles, eco-friendly fabrics, mysterious colors, and sexy silhouettes with each collection representing a new chapter to be discovered. A FESTIVE SEASON

ROAST TO

S

REMEMBER

erving up a mouthwatering main dish worth celebrating can elicit rave reviews from your guests and keep them gathered around the table longer, creating lasting memories.

Red Pepper Cranberry Sauce

Creating a crowd-pleasing festive season centerpiece starts with choosing a flavorful, tender cut of meat. For example, elegant cuts like Chateaubriand (roast-size filet mignon) or Bone-In Frenched Rib Roast from Omaha Steaks, a leading provider of premium beef and gourmet foods, can serve as the focal point of a memorable meal. Flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor at their peak, you can select a roast hand-cut and carved by an expert butcher and have it delivered directly to your door. Simple to prepare and easy to carve, all you need to do is season (or marinate) and roast before serving alongside a wine-infused sauce like Red Pepper Cranberry Sauce or Apricot and White Wine Glaze.

MILLENNIALS SEEK MINDFULNESS AS A FIX FOR THEIR HIGH STRESS LEVELS Each year millions of Americans make eliminating stress a top priority - it’s especially important to Millennials. Nearly half of them say they’re stressed all the time over everything from money to work, according to a recent survey, and even spending time around “anxious” people can set them off. That same survey also found that Millennials are overwhelmingly looking for an easy solution. One possible answer? Incorporating Japanese Green Tea into one’s daily routine, since it naturally contains the amino acid L-theanine that can help elevate moods and calm worried minds. (Hey, it’s steeped in Zen tradition.) See the full-sized image here to also learn which hours stress Millennials out most.

WHY MOTORCYCLING MAY BE THE ANSWER TO LOWERING STRESS LEVELS Turns out motorcyclists may get more than a glorious sense of freedom from riding. A pioneering new study conducted by researchers at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior found that motorcycling can also provide several mental and physical benefits. Stress-related hormonal biomarkers decreased by 28 percent among participating riders, to name one thing. And motoring along on the open road for just 20 minutes increased their heart rates an average of 11 percent and their adrenaline levels by 27 percent - like light exercise, though a lot more fun - to name another. Come to think of it, with stress levels on the rise - especially among young adults - anyone looking for that same “glorious sense of freedom” might want to check out the New Rider Course offered at select Harley-Davidson dealers. HOW TO CONQUER ANXIETY ABOUT ILLNESS USE MIRACLE-MINDED MANAGEMENT

I

will tell you how I manage it. I use an approach I call miracle-minded management. It’s an entirely different way to view things, an entirely different paradigm. First, let me summarize the most common view, the ego thought system. The ego, also known as human nature, views everything from a fear-based, dualistic perspective. It sees things as right and wrong, good and bad, us and them. The ego values separation, criticism and judgement. To the ego, illness is an attack. And when we are attacked, we need to defend ourselves and perhaps even attack back. We need to fight. We need to win. We need to resist and hold our ground. This makes sense to most people. That’s why we call it human nature. The only problem with this approach is that anything we resist, we make stronger. Miracle-minded management is a different thought system, a completely “out-of-the-ego-box” way of thinking. It’s not fear-based. It comes from a foundation of

love – pure, unconditional love. It does not separate and divide. It unites. It’s not resistant. It’s open, contemplative, accepting, and forgiving. Rather than fight, it processes ideas and experiences (including illness) and then lets them go. It forgives them. It deletes them, much like we delete a virus from a computer program. The Miracle-Minded Manager™ recognizes anything temporary is not real, to paraphrase a lesson from A Course in Miracles, and nothing real can be threatened. Herein lies the peace of God. So, what’s real? What’s eternal? What lives on when the temporary fades away? The answer to these questions brings us peace of mind – in any circumstance. It helps us recognize we’re more than human – a lot more. The ego thought system may be human nature, driving anxiety, fear, and doubt, but outside this box is our eternal, spiritual nature – our Higher Self. At this level, we’re always safe and secure. We’re loved and forgiven unconditionally. We existed before we incarnated as humans, and we exist long after our bodies perish. Life is not linear. It’s cyclical, just like the seasons. In other words, our “true” identity is far beyond what most of us think it is. Put simply, we never have anything to fear. It’s only our “false” self that sees this differently and doubts it. It’s our false self that is afraid. Here’s another way to think about it. Whenever we’re anxious or afraid, it’s because we’re not present. Our conscious mind is projecting an image, based on

94

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019

assumption, into the future - an image that frightens us. Oh no, what if I get sick? What if the illness is terminal? What if I suffer? What if I die? These negative images then trigger stress hormones which weaken the immune system. This explains why so many people get sick when they’re stressed. And then when they’re sick, they stress more, making themselves even more vulnerable to the illness. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. We tend to experience what we dwell on. Dwell on illness, or the idea of it, and you will likely experience more of it. We reap what we sow, beginning with what we think and believe. This is the law of attraction.

influential-magazine.com

The Miracle-Minded Manager™ knows dwelling on negative imagery and assumptions is not wise. Living in fear is not living at all. Thus, we need to “let go” to “let flow,” as counterintuitive as this may seem. We must let go of fear and doubt and anxiety to allow positive, holy energy to flow through us without interference. The body knows how to heal itself. Every cell is born with sacred intelligence. We’re wise to get out of our own way and let the Source of life bless us with health and well-being. As a business consultant for the past thirty years, I’ve helped countless individuals and organizations improve their lives by identifying the root cause to problems and solving them at this level. Anything short of this leaves us with recurring symptoms that keep coming back. Temporary solutions, like band aids and drugs, do little good when we have systemic problems. Perhaps they solve one problem, at least temporarily, but they often lead to other problems, or side effects. The key to highly effective problemsolving is to get to the root cause, the critical “leverage” point, and eliminate the problem at this level. The root cause to anxiety is the fear-based, ego thought system. Solving problems inside this box does little good in the long run. The problem is not inside the box, and therefor neither is the solution. The problem is the box itself. A shift in thinking here changes everything! l

MANAGE GRIEF WITH GRACE THIS

FESTIVE SEASON

ental and physical preparation are your best tools for managing the feelings that may accompany the festive season. While family members, particularly children, may want things to be as they’ve always been, the reality is things have changed. It can also be a time to create new traditions and memories that honor your absent loved one. Consider this advice from the National Funeral Directors Association to help navigate grief this festive season. 1. Get plenty of rest. The festive season pulls people in many directions, and that can mean getting less sleep than you need. However, being tired not only has a physical impact on how you feel, it can affect your ability to process emotions. 2. Give yourself permission to take a break. No two people process grief and loss the same way; only you know your limits. Even in a season filled with obligations and commitments, know that it’s OK to

set boundaries and remove yourself from festive season reminders and triggers. That may mean flipping the channel on the TV or bypassing the festive display at the store. Taking care of yourself when you’re grieving isn’t just about finding comfort, it’s also about avoiding discomfort. 3. Be realistic with your commitments. You may be the one who hosts your family’s festive season celebration every year, but if others offer to take responsibility, let them. Allow loved ones to help, and if they don’t volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask. 4. Look for tangible ways to express feelings. So much of grief is internal as you manage numerous thoughts and emotions, but physical expressions of your memories and feelings can help process it all. A package like the Remembering A Life Self-Care Box contains several resources to help you take care of yourself. It includes a journal, a rose quartz stone that promotes relaxation, a water bottle to remind you to stay hydrated, a jar to hold written memories of

5. Verbalize how you’re feeling. Manage expectations by telling family and friends how you’re feeling about the festive season and what they can expect from you. Also let them know what you need from them. If talking about your loved one brings comfort, let those around you know you appreciate the stories and reminiscing. If it hurts, ask that they refrain. 6. Honor your feelings and needs. As most who have experienced loss know, grief comes in waves. The only way to process grief is to ride one wave to the next. That may mean putting off your festive season shopping for a day when you’re feeling less emotional or bowing out of an event you planned to attend. 7. Include your loved one in the holidays. There’s no right or wrong way to incorporate your loved one’s memory; that all depends on what feels right to you. It may mean serving his or her favorite dish, placing a photo on the mantel or simply slipping a memento in your pocket so you can touch it when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Increased age may equal increased risk As adults get older, their immune systems tend to weaken, meaning those 65 or older can be at a heightened risk for certain diseases.1,2,3 There are more than 51 million adults in the United States 65 or older, and many do not realize that they are at an increased risk of pneumococcal pneumonia.1,4 It can strike anywhere, anytime and may start quickly with little warning. Adults 65 or older are over 10 times more likely to be hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia than adults 18-49.5 “Pneumococcal pneumonia is a serious and, in some cases, potentially life-threatening illness. Myth: Allergies go away in the winter Allergies might be the real source behind your stuffy nose and scratchy throat this season. Myth: The Flu Shot Gives You the Flu According to a new survey from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and Rite Aide, 44 percent of American women view the flu as a serious threat to their health. dealing with colds. It’s true something like chicken soup may help soothe and ease congestion, but much like vitamin C, hot soup won’t do immediate wonders.

Winter weather makes you store fat and gain weight Our bodies do not go into winter hibernation mode, stockpiling every ounce of fat to use for the lean times. It seems logical, like a throwback to our days living in caves foraging for food, but any weight gain comes from our winter habits. Dr. Sonpal points out, “we tend to exercise less in winter. We eat more hearty meals and comfort foods, including more sugary snacks and desserts (especially around the festive season).”

Myth: Being Cold Gives You a Cold No matter what your grandma might have told you, spending too much time in the cold air doesn’t make you sick. One study found healthy men who spent several hours in temperatures just above freezing had an increase in healthy, virus-fighting activity in their immune systems. In fact, you’re more likely to get sick indoors, where germs are easily passed.

Myth: You Lose Most Heat Through Your Head The saying goes “we lose 90 percent of our body heat through our heads.” But a 2006 study found the head accounts for about seven percent of the body’s surface area, and heat loss in the region is proportional, according to LiveScience. “Your head is another extremity, and it’s susceptible to cold, so you should wear a hat, but it doesn’t lose any more heat than another part of your body,” says Dr. Sonpal. Myth: Chicken Soup Will Cure Colds Many cultures teach us to drink warm liquids like tea, hot apple cider, and soups when we’re

Myth: Feed a cold, starve a fever Dr. Sonpal says, “This is another myth that comes from a time when people didn’t understand the science of body chemistry. The thought was if you had a cold, food would warm you up. Conversely, if you had a high fever, not eating would cool you down. This is just patently bad medical advice. In both cases, good nutrition gives your body the fuel it needs to fight infections and recover from an illness. When you have a fever, your body is burning energy at a rapid rate, and that needs to be replenished. So, feed your cold; but also feed your fever, or any other illness. Even if you have stomach issues, find a way to take in lost fluids and electrolytes.” l

owever, sitting for a long period of time can lead to some adverse health effects. In fact, according to a recent survey commissioned by Preparation H, 63 percent of Americans admit that staying seated for an extended period has resulted in butt pain or discomfort. While sitting may be one of our favorite positions, the following tips will help you diminish the harmful, but common, side effects of sitting and highlight how to give your backside the break it deserves. 1. Move bad posture out of the way Sitting down at a desk for upwards of eight hours at work each day is common for many professions, in addition to sitting during the daily commute to the office. For many, this is the preferred position, as one in four employed Americans would not show up to work if they could not sit down the entire time. However, sitting can have significant effects on our backs and spines, causing pain and discomfort. To avoid bad posture and a stiff neck or back, take a quick walk around the office, find a longer route to the water cooler or grab a coworker for a few laps around the parking lot during lunch. If your office allows it, opt for a standing desk to get you off your butt and onto your feet. 2. Improve poor circulation Let’s face it - we all want to get home, kick off our shoes and get

WHETHER DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE, WORKING HARD AT YOUR DESK OR WATCHING YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW ON THE COUCH, SITTING CAN PROVIDE RELIEF AND GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELAX. lost in our couch cushions for the rest of the night. However, sitting for too long causes your blood to remain in your feet and lower legs due to lack of movement, causing your body’s circulation to slow down and resulting in numbness and tingling. To break up your sitting marathon, try to perform a few simple bodyweight exercises during commercial breaks or use the time to get up and tidy your living room space. 3. Leave backside discomfort in the past Everyone uses the bathroom throughout the day, but some may spend a little too much time on the porcelain throne. The time spent sitting, as well as the habits associated with the activity, can ultimately contribute to the causes

of hemorrhoid flare-ups, like constipation and straining. When hemorrhoids do strike, Preparation H is the #1 doctor-recommended OTC hemorrhoid brand formulated to soothe, cool, cleanse and care for your backside. To help shorten the time spent on the toilet, avoid digital distractions, like your phone, that can lead to spending extended time sitting in the bathroom. 4. Bring the power back to your brain Your physical health isn’t the only thing suffering from sitting - your mental health is affected as well. Sitting for extended periods can slow down brain function, leading to memory loss and a feeling of a foggy brain. If you’re feeling distracted or can’t seem to accomplish a task at hand, try getting up and going for a quick walk to help improve concentration and keep blood flowing to your brain so the next big idea is right around the corner. Whether it’s getting in an extra couple of steps or banishing your phone from the bathroom, these small changes can be beneficial in reducing the negative effects of staying seated for too long. Sitting will inevitably be a part of your day, but by implementing these tips, you can give yourself a pat on the back for putting your health first. I think more Americans need to know about it. Most people are familiar with Pilates, but not everyone knows it was originally developed for its rehabilitative powers, not just its fitness benefits. Yes, you can work on toned arms and getting in shape after a pregnancy. But you can also help heal correct posture, scoliosis, sciatica, lower back pain, nerve impingement, leg pain, and joint issues. Regular practice can also increase circulation, release tight fascia (like connective tissue throughout your body), and prevent injury. I was introduced to Pilates as a college athlete. life suddenly centered around pain thanks to severe sciatica combined with scoliosis. I turned to Pilates looking for help and was so impressed by its healing power I devoted my life to helping others find the same relief. Tell me the “where” and I’ll show you the “why” At my two Pilates studios in New York City, pain is an almost universal complaint among my new clients. Sometimes it’s a minor pain, and sometimes it’s debilitating. Many of the injuries I see result at least in part from living with a serious disconnect between body and mind. We tend to go about our business without ever considering what all our muscle groups are doing, and how they’re feeling at any given time. You might not notice you always sit more on your left hip, carry your bag on the same shoulder all the time, or sit for hours at a time with your shoulders rounded forward. Then one day maybe you pull your back out picking up a suitcase. You’ll probably heal up fine, but if you don’t address why you got hurt in the first place, repeat injuries are virtually guaranteed.

You must dig into how the way you’re using your body is causing pain. For example, lower back pain is a common complaint. For many adults it’s just a part of life. In Pilates we first identify the cause, which is often (but not always) the muscles of the core aren’t providing enough support to the back. Then our sessions can focus on how to notice, strengthen, and stabilize the

Improved strength can help with healing and injury prevention, but the key to staying pain free is body awareness. Pilates teaches you how to access the different parts of your body. You learn how to be aware of how muscles work together, and how to control them. It’s not a miracle — it’s Pilates I feel extremely lucky to have a career where I’m called a “miracle

When we met she was struggling with pain in her hip and foot that made it hard to use the stairs. Plus, she just hated exercise. These days Sherry says can “use the stairs with ease” and she’s always up for the next challenge. 3 WAYS TO FIND YOUR CORE VALUES AND HOW THEY CAN HELP YOU THROUGH YOUR STRUGGLES WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR MORALS AND VALUES? IS IT PLAUSIBLE TO THINK THESE VERY BASIC PRINCIPLES COULD QUITE POSSIBLY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR PERCEPTION OF THE WORLD AROUND US?

A

re they in charge of how we deal with or interact with our peers? Stephen J. Bavolek (1999) defined morals as a code of conduct with identified “rights and wrongs” and values as set of beliefs that have worth. They were developed even before we were born by our family of origin, with a few minor tweaks from us here and there along the way. Just as all the fingers on our hands are not equal, the same can be said for the code of conduct formed and followed by another. These core beliefs are deep rooted and highly individualized. They help make up and define who we are when no one is watching. Understanding this complex belief system is essential

LMFT, FOUNDER AND CEO OF EMBRIDGE COUNSELING SERVICES to meeting our daily goals, regardless of the storm on the horizon. Now, how does one find out or understand our core values? Here are the three ways to start:

1.

Understanding who you are is the first step in uncovering your core values by identifying your likes, dislikes, interests, and values. Negative experiences can cause some individuals to struggle when they attempt to pinpoint a few positives about themselves. These same individuals are also very quick to identify negatives about themselves. They also tend to say what they think others will want to hear. By doing so, they are unable to be true to themselves which costs them the ability to find out who they truly are. This lack of self-confidence could deter an individual from becoming the best version of him or herself. So, what do I mean by all of this? We live in a very negative society these days, which triggers a negative self-concept and lack of self-esteem. The constant pressure we feel to be who and what society wants us to be is in direct conflict with who we could become if we were to simply focus that energy inward. By doing so, we avoid becoming entangled with worries, confusion, and sadness. You cannot understand who you are or find yourself if you continue to pursue the dreams of another.

2.

You must accept who you are, without exception or hesitation, and love yourself unconditionally exactly where you are in this moment. Seeking to make changes based on someone else’s desires will never last because they’re not genuine. Why? This is important because you are an original, not a carbon copy. Instead of seeking to be someone you are not and attempting to adhere to core values that do not fit or contradicts your own, strive to accept and improve your own in order to feel satisfied and confident in yourself.

3.

Once you understand who you are, learn to accept it for exactly where you are supposed to be. Take note before you make any big decisions your heart agrees with your mind. Do not rush the process. This alliance is necessary if you want to stay true to your core values. Impulsive decisions can lead to unknowingly compromising this value system, resulting in unaccomplished goals and objectives. Do not sell yourself short. Be a leader and be proud of who you are. Your morals/values will inevitably be a guiding light throughout your life. If you think about all your past challenges, you will undoubtedly realize your core values contributed to your survival in challenging moments. Always remember, when you face an unexpected storm, you’ll be shaken, but not moved because your foundation is very strong. Learn to lean into the struggle and try not to sabotage yourself before you can truly shine. l

ENCOURAGING

YOUTH SPORTS AND THEIR BENEFITS

SPORTS HELP SHAPE KIDS’ LIVES, BUT DUE TO FUNDING SHORTAGES, SOME SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAMS ARE AT RISK.

M

ost experts agree physical activity is an essential aspect of youth development that teaches teamwork, builds confidence and fuels academic potential. However, according to a survey of middle school educators engaged with DonorsChoose. org, 6 in 10 feel their middle school athletic programs are barely funded or underfunded. In fact, a lack of funding accounts for 47% of cuts to middle school sports programs, the survey revealed. A multiyear program known as “Mission Tiger,” launched by Kellogg, is committed to helping save middle school sports. The initiative started with a $1 million commitment to DonorsChoose.org to fund projects big and small at schools in need. Professional athletes passionate about

youth sports, including Olympian Julie Ertz, are teaming up with the program to help underfunded programs. The pro-soccer midfielder teamed up with Mission Tiger to help a school inspire its students’ dreams both on and off the field by donating new equipment, including soccer balls, cleats, shin guards and more. “Growing up, I learned numerous skills from sports, skills that applied not only to athletics but to my everyday life,” Ertz said. “This is one of the many reasons why I joined the Mission Tiger team – we’re not just giving kids the opportunity to play sports, we’re giving kids the opportunity to develop beneficial skills that can positively impact the future of today’s youth.” Consider these benefits of youth sports:

TATIANA SHABELNIK COLLECTION IS INSPIRED BY HER TREMENDOUS PASSION FOR TRAVEL AND LOVE FOR DIFFERENT CULTURES. BOLD BRIGHT COLORS AND SHAPES AS WELL AS COLOR-BLOCKING ELEMENTS DERIVE FROM HER LONGTIME ADMIRATION FOR THE WORK OF RUSSIAN ARTIST WASSILY KANDINSKY AND BELORUSSIAN-FRENCH ARTIST MARC CHAGALL. THE COLLECTION INCORPORATES FUSION COLORS ALONG WITH THE CURRENT TRENDS.

S

habelnik’s ambition with this line is to produce clothing people will want to wear in everyday life. Very comfortable, yet stylish — these qualities have always been the goal of her designs. Sexy and feminine, too. She believes adding a little touch of“drama”is essential even though she wants her clothing to be wearable and not simply designed for the runways. “My clothing certainly should WOW a runway audience,” she says, “but at the same time I want that runway audience to know this clothing is for them. They can wear this line in everyday life.” Shabelnik’s designs draw on a host of influences and inspirations, including the colors and styles of

118

folk Belorussian dresses. By reflecting her heritage and culture in these designs, she has produced clothing that connects contemporary life with her vivid ancestral past. Shabelnik believes in soaring high with her personal style statement. Tatiana not only strives for a style that is unique, but she also wants her clients to understand her designs are woven with more than just threads. They also capture and reflect her joyful celebration of fashion and what she hopes will be her legacy and contribution to this exciting world. In addition to clothing, Shabelnik also designs jewelry to complement and accentuate her clothing. Anyone who adores one of her short dresses, for example, will love wearing one of her beaded necklaces made from semi-precious stones. With a range of colors and designs, Shabelnik’s jewelry is meant to inspire — much in the same way Chagall and Kandinsky have inspired her. Her jewelry, like her clothing designs, is meant to be more than simple merchandise: it is art to be worn and celebrated in daily life. Her unique sense of colors and time dimensions is something pleasing to the eye and perfect to wear. Tatiana Shabelnik, truly, is a designer of passion with the devotion and determination to give this passion the ideal expression. William Jackson: Tatiana, you’re a passionate and determined person. How did you develop these qualities? Tatiana Shabelnik: I believe it’s not something I developed, but rather was born with. Since a young age I’ve been very determined and a perfectionist. I was born in Minsk, Belarus, when it was still part of the Soviet Union. My passion for art and my work ethic are as a result of being influenced by my mother and grandmother who were talented in sewing, knitting, crocheting, and any other handcraft you can name. My mom worked full time as a physicist at the Academy of Sciences in Minsk. To make extra income, she completed a two-year education course in sewing where she learned to sew and build patterns from scratch. I recall her coming home from work and after dinner sitting behind the

sewing machine until midnight making clothes for extra income. From mom, I learned the feel of fabric and could easily distinguish natural fibers from those synthetic or chemically produced, and from a young age, was inspired to sketch my own outfits. Without the influence of my mom and grandmother I’d never be where I am now. William: Tell me what you admire most about the art of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and BelorussianFrench artist Marc Chagall. Tatiana: The use of bold bright colors and shapes, as well as color-blocking elements, contribute to my admiration for the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and Belorussian-French artist Marc Chagall. For Kandinsky, color had the ability to put viewers in touch with their spiritual selves. He believed yellow could disturb, while blue awakened the highest spiritual aspirations. He incorporated color with concentration, care, delicacy, and an admirable harmony. He once said, “The sound of colors is so definite it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark lake with treble.” Kandinsky literally saw colors when he would hear music and heard music when he painted. Chagall was an artist who was inspired by the goodness of humankind; the possibility of changing the world. His work is in an entirely abstract style. As the poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire once said, “Chagall’s work is ‘supernatural’”. William: Your preference is your clothing designs are wearable. How do you define wearable clothing? Tatiana: Yes, definitely. I’d love my clothes to be wearable art; one of a kind pieces that are individually designed as an expressive art. William: Tell us about how your personal experiences are incorporated into your design aesthetic. Tatiana: I want my admirers to feel unique, independent, and free from any limitations dictated by the customs of different countries. I want them to make a statement when they wear my clothing and jewelry.

I feel inspired by looking at fabrics and colors. Fashion is part of everyday life and it comes from life. I pay close attention to what people wear when I’m on the street, at work, in a salsa club, or at a business or fashion event. Fashion by itself inspires me.

William: Is it important for you, as a designer, to ensure your designs reflect you? Tatiana: Yes, it’s important for me. A very common question I get from the media focuses on where my inspiration for bold colors comes from. It’s certainly connected with my life in the Soviet Union, and my love for arts in different forms. I’m not interested in “safe” in my color choices. My signature use of orange reflects enthusiasm, warmth, and happiness, while capturing a sense of energy and cheerfulness. My selection of colors embodies the qualities of risk-taking, physical confidence, vivacious competition, and independence. The name of my line is “CONTRAST.” I prefer working with natural fibers such as silks and chiffons as I love the flow and feel of light fabrics. It’s also a reflection of freedom for me. In my work, I’ve tried to contrast contemporary Los Angeles glitz and glamour with a vivid ancestral past in rural Belarus. As you look at my designs, you’ll notice they’re rooted in the styles of Belorussian folk dresses from my youth with a modern twist. I provide a cosmopolitan, playful blend of colors and textures inspired by my fearless personality. William: What are your inspirations for your jewelry designs? Tatiana: In addition to clothing, I also design jewelry to complement and accentuate my clothing. With a range of colors and designs, my jewelry is meant to inspire, much in the same way Chagall and Kandinsky have inspired me. My jewelry, like my clothing designs, is meant to be more than simple merchandise: it’s an art to be worn and celebrated. William: Tell us about your favorite jewelry design and what was the inspiration. Tatiana: My favorites are those that can make a bold statement. William: What would you say is most unique about you? William: Where do you go or what do you do to remain inspired? Tatiana: I don’t necessarily need to go anywhere to be inspired. It depends on my mood. One day I can generate multiple design ideas, and during another it can be none. I feel inspired by looking at fabrics and colors. Fashion is part of everyday life and it comes from life. I pay close attention to what people wear when I’m on the street, at work, in a salsa club, or at a business or fashion event. Fashion by itself inspires me. It’s fascinating to see how fashion differs in across the globe, and I always think about how I can design for different cultures. My desire is to see people wearing my clothes and loving it. William: What makes you happy? Tatiana: As long as I can stay creative, be surrounded by people with positive energy, and help people, I am happy. William: How do you continue to live your best life? Tatiana: I believe in living my life to the fullest. As Russian dramatist Nikolai Ostrovsky said: “Man’s dearest possession is life. It is given to him but once, and he must live it so as to feel no torturing regrets for wasted years, never know the burning shame of a mean and petty past; so live that, dying, he might say: all my life, all my strength were given to the finest cause in all the world-the fight for the Liberation of Mankind”. l NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2019
