Moving? Are the kids ready for it?

It's quite normal for children to feel like they don't have any control and that they were never part of this big decision. So to ensure your kids feel like they're involved and part of this big life-changing event, try the following tips and tricks. Preparing to Move

- First, make sure your children know that they can ask you any question and you'll give them an honest answer. Most kids want to know about their new school, neighborhood, sport teams and city. But they may also have questions you hadn't thought of, such as, "how hard is it to make friends?"; "Are we taking our dog?"; "Why are we moving?". Answer every question your child has with as many details as you can provide. Being honest and open will help your child feel confident in this decision to move. You may want to ask your child to write down their questions as they think of them, then call a family meeting to discuss each person's questions. Family meetings are a great way to open up a dialogue between you and your children. - Give your child a plan for their room. Providing your child with as much information as you can about the new house will help them make some decisions before hand, such as where to place furniture and what color to paint their walls. Encourage them to make cut-outs of everything in their room so they can rearrange things before move day. - Encourage your child to create an address book where addresses of

friends, teachers, coaches, etc... can be kept. Encourage your child to stay in touch, and assure them that their friends are just a mouseclick or postage stamp away. Helping Children Move During the School Year

Talk to teachers and school administrators in advance of the move. School administrators will be the first to tell you that it's important for the school to be notified of your child's arrival, any special needs your child may have and if there were any problems at the old school. You may also want to discuss how your child feels about the move, if your child is shy or academic challenges you're concerned about. Remember, teachers and staff are there to help you with the transition. The more you're willing to share, the easier you'll make it for your child to succeed.

While the list above speaks more to your concerns, it's also equally important to point out your child's strengths, their passions and what they might miss about their old school. For instance, if your child played in the school band, and the new school doesn't have a band program, you may ask the staff what the community offers or if they have other suggestions on how you can keep your child engaged. It's critical that things your child loved to do in the old school be transferred to the new community.

Feng Shui for today

Many people have asked me about the practice of Feng Shui and where it all began. This custom is believed to have started six thousand years ago in the Neolithic times.

According to some discoveries, Feng Shui can be placed among the most ancient practices of not only China but the entire world as well. Since those times, it has been carried from one generation to another as well as it has been acquiring new knowledge while deepening the already existing one. Feng Shui is a system approach to interior design which is often characterized by a minimalist appearance, because of its emphasis on de-cluttering. Its principles are compatible with virtually any style of architecture or interior design. The practice of Feng Shui emphasizes the need for people to live in harmony with their environment. To apply Feng Shui you need a complete understanding of the Chinese concepts of Ch'i (energy), Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements. Yīn "shady place, north slope, south bank (river); cloudy, overcast"; is the dark element: it is passive, dark, feminine, downward-seeking, and corresponds to the night.

Fire

Fire Element is the most "Yang" of the elements. Because fire is so Yang, this is the one instance where colour does work well. A tea-light or table lamp with a red shade make excellent fire remedies. Please be very careful when using tapered candles or oil lamps: use tealights or votives for safety. - Fire represents the South. Earth

Earth element is often confused with soil, which is only part of the element. Earth needs to be combined with rock, clay, and stone etc. i.e. a terracotta pot filled with soil is a perfect earth element, or a clay statue. Earth colours are warm tones of yellow & beige but not as effective as the real element itself. - Earth represents the North East or the South West.

Water is the key element; we would not exist without it, our planet as our body is made up of mainly water. It is a very powerful element to use, it should always be clear and free flowing, never let it go stagnant, as this will create many problems. A fountain or aquarium is ideal or a simple fishpond in the garden. Water has always been associated with power. It has been used for thousands of years by Kings and Emperors in the form of protection as in a moat around a castle, or a powerful attraction for abundance. If you look at most Cities today, they are either positioned near the water or have large lakes or rivers close by. Thousands of years ago, cities which were built near waterways were always more populous and prosperous as well as being inviting to travelers and trades-

Yin is often symbolized by water and air, while yang is symbolized by fire and earth.

The elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the foundation for Feng Shui balance and play a very important role in creating the perfect environment. Wood

The first element is wood because it is the beginning of new life; it is the creator of the five-element cycle. Although wood furniture is a wood element and contains positive energy, it is lifeless and contains none or very little Ch'i. You need to use live wood in the form of a bushy plant similar to a "money plant" as it holds & retains so much live Ch'i. Plants also filter the air we breathe; it is better to use a natural form when it comes to the wood element. Remember to feed and water the plant, because if it dies it will hold Sha Ch'i, even on any dead leaves, so keep it in good condition. Although colour is not as effective, the wood element can be replaced by the colour green. You can, of course, use both plant & colour together. - Wood represents the directions of East and South East. PAGE 14

Metal

Metal can be found in many forms. Silver, Gold, Copper, and Bronze are just a few of the Metal Element. You can also be creative when using this element; you could use a brass vase or wall plaque. When choosing an element try to look at the shape, don't use sharp points or unattractive objects just because they have the element you need. Feng Shui is about creating harmony and balance and it should look attractive in the environment you put it in. The colours you should use are white, gold, and silver. - Metal represents the West and North West.
