They also help keep insulin and blood sugar stabilized, so may be appropriate for your diabetic pet. While it can be sprinkled on top of wet food, I don't give my pets the chia seeds dry. Simply because, I know what it’s like to chew a spoonful of the dry seeds and I didn't like the way it stuck to my teeth and gums. But you could put some in a bullet/blender to crush the shell into a powder. This way, your pet will better assimilate the nutritional value of the seeds, if just sprinkled over their food. The best way I've found to serve chia seeds to pets, is to soak them for a few hours (or overnight) first. This way, the crusty shell breaks and a soothing gelatinous gel forms. They don't really have a flavour, so pets don't mind them at all. The easiest way I know to prepare it, is to pour one cup of good water over two tablespoons of chia seeds. Stir it up, then let it soak for at least one hour, or even better, overnight. If you don't have a lot of pets (or people) to serve, it can least in the refrigerator in this form, for about a week.
Always start small, with any addition to your pet's regime. Suggested adult dosage is 1/4 tsp. Per 10 pounds. About a teaspoon for a small dog, and two teaspoons for a large dog. Start with less and build up over time.
