The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is Going to New York City

It’s official. This year’s annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will take place in New York City. “The 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will be held in New York City,” said Sharen Jester Turney, Victoria’s Secret Chief Executive Officer. “New York City was the site of the first ever Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 1995, and holds a special place in our history and our hearts. For this year’s show, our twentieth, we’re returning to where it all began.” With a crew of newly appointed angels, we are excited to see what this year’s show will have in store. Last year’s VS fashion show took place in London, England and featured performances by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, and Hozier. And we’ll never forget Ariana Grande getting hit by accident with an Angel’s wings. It was very well choreographed and the lightness of that played out beautifully. The show is always a must see filled with excitement of fashions that we would all want to wear especially those wings. Looking forward to the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion show.

3. Sachajuan Ocean Mist: This Swedish brand’s products are as clean and pure as their minimalist bottles. Free of parabens, sulfates, and anything bad, once it’s sprinkled through your locks, twist with your fingertips for piece-y texture. At Nordstrom for $28.

5. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray: The original, the classic. Bumble and Bumble were among the first to bless us with saltsprayed hair and it doesn’t get more quintessentially beachy than this. On Sephora for $27.

Helping Millions of Men and Women Like YOU Conquer Dating, Find Love, and Build Amazing Relationships

What do Men Really Want in

Bed? By David Wygant

H

ow do you keep a man so sexually addicted to you he’ll never stray? How can you keep the passion alive in the bedroom, even after you’ve been together a while?

I’ve said it before, but great sex is the glue that holds any good relationship together, yet all the time I hear the same complaints from women. Their man isn’t interested in sex anymore, or it only lasts for a few minutes, or he can’t do it without watching porn in the background. How many times have you dated Mr. One Pump? You jump into bed, and after a quick fumble and a couple of thrusts, he’s apologizing, telling you it’s “never happened before, but I’ll be better next time I promise!” How many times does the sex get better for you? So what’s the secret to amazing sex? What’s the secret to giving a man exactly what he wants, while finding satisfaction for yourself? I’m about to reveal the secret, and you’ll want to pay attention, because what I’m going to tell you could transform your sex life forever. You can thank me later. The secret to amazing sex, AND a deeper emotional connection with a man is… To know what great sex means to HIM! That’s right. You need to know what he wants in the bedroom, and then you have to tell him what YOU want in the bedroom. You see, there’s been a lie out there circulated by so-called experts for years, which says that men don’t like to be told what to do in the bedroom.

For years, you’ve believed that you couldn’t tell a man what you like. For years you’ve believed you had to put up with average sex, because you’d upset your man if you told him what you liked. It’s all a lie, and in fact, it’s probably the reason so many couples out there suffer bad sex. The truth is, men absolutely do want to know how to please you, to turn on your light sexually, to drive you wild and take you to places you’ve never been before. We want to make you the ultimate goddess of desire. Of course we do. We’re men. If you get nothing else from this article know this… All men want to be studs.Period.It’s in our DNA. When a man rock’s his woman’s world, when he is her ultimate sexual fantasy, he feels like a super hero. He feels like YOUR super hero. And that’s all he wants to be. All you have to do is know the right buttons to push, and which switch to flip. So how do you know which buttons to push and which switch to flip?

The 3 Rules For Talking To Your Man About Sex: Rule #1: Make Him A Super Hero – Stick To The Positive. Rule #2: A Little Mystery Goes A Long Way. Rule #3: Be His Accomplice, Not His School Teacher davidwygant.com

elly LeBrock was once considered a pin-up girl and movie star. She was married to Steven Seagal until their divorce in 1996. Kelly has revealed how the divorce effected her. Supermodel and actress Kelly LeBrock, who rose to fame in the 80s in iconic films like The Woman In Red and Weird Science, has stayed out of the spotlight for nearly two decades, but the former model is now ready to return to Hollywood -- after she first opens up about her past and marriage to action movie star Steven Seagal in a forthcoming memoir, of course. LeBrock’s current life looks nothing like her past. At 15, she began modeling and became one of the top models in the 1970s, appearing in Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Once in California, at age 24, Kelly married aspiring movie producer Victor Drai in 1984. 'We went to Paris, fell in love and rented a bunch of French movies. We saw Pardon Mon Affaire and decided it was a good film to remake in Hollywood.' That film became Woman In Red, and Drai cast Kelly in the title role. Kelly played the sexy siren Charlotte, Gene Wilder’s love interest, and in one iconic scene she stood atop an air vent that caused her red dress to billow upward in the wind. By 1984, she married aspiring movie producer Victor Drai, who cast her in the title role of “Woman in Red” opposite Gene Wilder. The film earned an Academy Award and made a star of LeBrock. After her marriage to Drai ended in 1986, LeBrock was introduced to Seagal, now 62, a year later. “He spoke fluent Japanese and he could do acupuncture, chiropractics, sang, played guitar and drums, and could draw." “There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t do. He was an allround Renaissance man and I was instantly attracted to him.” But their marriage was stormy and split in 1996. LeBrock said she stayed with the action hero for nearly 10 years because of their three children before finally calling it quits. After the divorce in 1996, LeBrock gave up her life in Beverly Hills for a more secluded one in the country on a sprawling ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif. "When I split with Steven Seagal, the divorce was very ugly, and details of the case were on the evening news," the British star, now 54, "I didn't want my kids seeing it, so I simply got rid of the TV. I moved my kids out of L.A. so they could grow up with real people -- the kids of gas pump attendants, plumbers and real family people."

I simply got rid of the TV. I moved my kids out of L.A. so they could grow up with real people.

It’s bloody exhausting! To work the land full time keeps me so fit that I haven’t worked out in seven years.

Kelly LeBrock recently revealed that she was too afraid to leave her home. “I feared everything and didn’t want to leave the house,” LeBrock lives in a single-story farmhouse, where she grows her own vegetables, makes her own cheese and yogurt, and spends evenings riding her horse, Kiwi. “It’s bloody exhausting!” she said about her life now. “To work the land full time keeps me so fit that I haven’t worked out in seven years. I clean the pool myself, muck out the pigs and the horses.” Kelly LeBrock has spent the past few years writing a memoir and she is making a return to Hollywood. 'Writing about that experience in my book has been incredibly painful, but I’m relieved the truth will finally come out.' Kelly says that it was her love for their three children— Dominic, Annaliza and Arissa Seagal—that caused her to stay with Seagal through many explosive and traumatic times. Kelly LeBrock will always be the timeless beauty that made every guy's heart race.

There is much to be said about the time-tested preference of simplicity over change. Practicality is a staunch reminder of the bricks that bolster our dreams – a return to valued standards by which we gauge our successes. It’s what builds a lasting heritage that honors enduring truths, and establishes staunch foundations that speak to great achievements. Like his father (Jack C. Establishing Taxman in 1978, George sought to offer quality accounting with an emphasis on the consumer. Working alongside his father is James Carapella, a welcome and driven partner who is committed to the legacy. His professional expertise extends beyond the realm of finance, into customer relations with unparalleled efficiency. Of course, George sees all his staff as an extension of his kin. It is their experience and dedication that contributes to his excellence, solidifying their business as a renowned Staten Island staple. Carapella and company provide a wide variety of services, each with an individualized focus and attention to their valued clients. From consultations to planning, representation to investment, Taxman maintains their efforts with a courtesy that is distinct. Merging local sensibilities with quality support, Carapella exhibits mastery in a premium blend of perspectives. It’s this esteemed approach to workmanship that keeps the regulars coming back, loyal and still convinced that some things rarely change. Pat LaFrieda

P

By Georgia

at LaFrieda’s first foray into the meat world began in the summer of 1981, at a very young age he started learning the tricks of the meat trade from sunrise to sundown under the watchful eye of his forefathers His grandfather developed into the business in 1906, with the first retail location in 1912. After more then 100 years and 3 generations, today Pat, Pat Sr. and his cousin are hands on to continue giving the best quality there is. When asked working in an environment, that becomes round the clock operation. “We never sleep, but when you enjoy your job it is the best life you can live“ Pat said. “Our customers become our friends by nature and our clients are my best friends.“ That passion was born in New York’s famed meatpacking district, where the dramatically transformed landscape has made butchering unfashionable, pushing LaFrieda to North Bergen, New Jersey. Pat Sr, wanted his son to have and gain the education of a different career path. But Pat still had the family business inspiration of ideas and vision, even though he still went along to start his career in the stock market. Pat worked on Wall Street for a year but he despised it. He had a taste for the family business, so Pat ditched the boiler room to get back in a meat locker. “I was the generation that was supposed to jump out of this business,” Pat said. “I wasn’t supposed to work these hours, I wasn’t supposed to be in these 35 degree temperatures.“ Pat LaFrieda has changed the way food industry looks at meat. With chopped not ground meat the chefs around the world get to experience first hand what it is to have that truck pull into your establishment. Speaking with Pat found that he is a man of principle with a drive of knowledge implemented to him throughout his life to sharing it with several businesses from Manhattan to the outskirts of Staten Island. With a truck route added to Staten Island Pat LaFrieda gave Standard Burger his attention in providing them with the quality that stands behind the LaFrieda brand, bringing it even closer to home.

Top10 beach drinks around the world

PIÑA COLADA, PUERTO RICO The pineapple, coconut, and rum slurry known as piña colada had been popular in the Caribbean for at least a hundred years before Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar (now called Oasis Bar) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, perfected it in the 1950s using cream of coconut. Today, San Juan’s signature cocktail is sipped all over the world, but tastes best in Puerto Rico, by the beach or pool. CAIPIRINHA, BRAZIL Made with sugar, lime, and cachaça—a spirit fermented from sugarcane juice— the caipirinha is ubiquitous in Brazil’s seaside cafés. Even vendors on the beach mix them. Variations abound, the most popular is caipifrutas, which adds one or more of the region’s wide array of fruits, such as caju (cashew fruit), passionfruit, mango, or kiwi. MAI-TAI, POLYNESIA Upon tasting this cocktail of rum, orange curaçao, orgeat syrup (made from almonds), and lime at Polynesian-style lounge Trader Vic’s (then called Hinky Dink) in Oakland, California, in 1944, a Tahitian guest remarked, “maita’i ro’a ‘ae,” meaning “out of this world.” Hence the name mai-tai, or so the story goes. The drink got a boost in Elvis’s hit movie Blue Hawaii and has since become a staple at tiki lounges everywhere. RED STRIPE BEER, JAMAICA So identified is Red Stripe with the Jamaican national identity that when the island formally gained independence from Great Britain in 1962, one columnist suggested the real date should have been 1928, when the beer was first brewed on the island in Kingston. After a couple of marketing glitches in the U.S. market, the lager is now the most popular of all Caribbean beers. DAIQUIRI, CUBA Thanks to the prevalence of rum, lime, and sugar in the Caribbean, the trio became the base for many of the region’s cocktails (as well as the British sailor’s grog). Named for a beach near Santiago, Cuba, the first daiquiri was allegedly invented by a group of American engineers working in the area whose gin supplies had run dry. The drink today is more recognizable to Americans in its fruit-flavored frozen form. 104

MARGARITA, MEXICO Was it a Texas socialite in Acapulco who was looking for something to refresh her party guests on a hot afternoon or a bartender in Tijuana hoping to impress Rita Hayworth (née Margarita Cansino) with a drink in her honor? Regardless of who invented the margarita—the stories are legion—the tart blend of tequila, cointreau, and lime juice in a glass rimmed with salt has become synonymous with Mexico. It’s the top-selling tequila cocktail worldwide. LIMONCELLO, SOUTHERN ITALY When life gave farmers in southern Italy surplus lemons, they soaked the peels in grain alcohol and added sugar to make limoncello. The sweettart digestivo is traditionally sipped after dinner, but is gaining ground as a base for simple cocktails, such as splashed over ice with soda or tonic water, preferably enjoyed while taking in the stunning seaside vistas of the Amalfi Coast. CAPE CODDER, MASSACHUSETTS When cranberry giant Ocean Spray began to promote its juice cocktail as a mixer, suggestions to pair it with Canadian whiskey or rum fell flat. But vodka and cranberry—named the Cape Codder in honor of the beloved Massachusettspeninsula where cranberries thrive—hit it big, spawning multiple variations, including the trendier martini hybrid, the cosmopolitan. ROSÉ, CÔTE D’AZUR, FRANCE Drinking pink has just started to catch on stateside, but a glass of chilled dry rosé has long been de rigueur in the seaside cafés of France’s Côte d’Azur, alongside fish soup and langoustines. Typically made by removing the skins of the red grapes after crushing, rosé is thought of as the less-serious sister to white or red wine, making it the ideal beachside quaff in Saint Tropez. GIN AND TONIC, INDIA Gin was first introduced to tonic to offset its bitter taste so the British, who were occupying India at the time, could stomach the stuff as an anti-malarial. The Brits ended up fancying the crisp combo, adding a wedge of lime, and it became a mainstay of the tropics long after the empire fell. Try it on the beach in Goa while watching the sun set.

IN SPIRITS Summer Cocktail Recipes:

8 Cool Drinks from Hot New York Restaurants

S

cotch is my daily drink of choice—specifically, what Christopher Hitchens called “Mr. Walker’s amber restorative.” Or something a little more potent, such as a Speyside single malt or a high-proof bourbon. But when summer hits New York hard, I occasionally get something lighter and more refreshing to survive the increasingly torrid days.

Consider how versatile summer cocktails can be: They can cool you off, make a family barbecue infinitely more pleasant, and they can even match that new citrus-colored bathing suit you just bought. All that I ask is that post-Memorial Day drinks be relatively easy to concoct—a muddle here, a shake there, and perhaps a sprig of something. So for this summer’s recipes, I asked eight New York City bars and restaurants for their coolest cocktails. And by the end of the month, all these drinks could be on the house—yours.

You can never go wrong with a French 75. It’s as delicious (and refreshing) as a summer cocktail can get.

106

THE ISLAND PASSION COCKTAIL AT THE 21 CLUB “Passion fruit instantly transports me to my favorite islands around the world. With this take on a traditional dark and stormy cocktail, we’re bringing the tropics to 21 for the season.” —Edward Kennelly, bartender Ingredients: 2 oz. Captain Morgan rum 3 oz. ginger beer ½ passion fruit Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice, shake vigorously. Strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice.

FRENCH 75 AT THE HOLIDAY COCKTAIL LOUNGE “When the weather shifts in spring, I look for simple and clean flavors. The French 75 is a classic (and very refreshing) cocktail made with cognac, which many people think of as a cold weather spirit. But it’s actually versatile enough to take you right from winter through spring and into summer.” — Michael Neff, master mixologist and beverage director Ingredients: 1 oz. Louis Royer Force 53 VSOP cognac ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice ½ oz. simple syrup ¼ oz. Cointreau Preparation: Serve in a cocktail glass. Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a lemon twist. 21 Club’s island passion cocktail couldn’t be easier to make—it only calls for three ingredients.

During the summer months, I occasionally ditch my flask of single malt Scotch and switch over to rum. And this recipe calls for some fine Jamaican ones. RAGGLE TAGGLE GYPSY AT THE DEAD RABBIT “The combination of two light spirits, tangy sumac cane syrup, nectarine (a fruit best in the summer season), citrus, and the soft eucalyptus and earth tones of the Boker’s Bitters creates a wildly refreshing drink on a summer day or makes it feel like summer when it’s a dreary one. We serve this drink punch style at The Dead Rabbit with a nice chunk of ice and grated nutmeg on top.” —Greg Buda, bartender Ingredients: 1 oz. Pisco Portón .75 oz. Bacardí Heritage .75 oz. sumac cane syrup .75 oz. lemon juice .5 oz. nectarine juice 2 dashes Boker’s Bitters Method: Shaken Glassware: Punch cup and ice nugget Garnish: Nutmeg Sumac Syrup: Add 1 tsp. sumac powder to 3 oz. of a 2:1 cane syrup, mix as the syrup is being made and steep for 30 min.

STORM’S BREWIN’ AT PORCHLIGHT “Jamaican rum, lemon, passion fruit, and grenadine over crushed ice is the perfect drink to sip on a blistery summer day. Its tart and fruity flavors (provided by housemade grenadine and passion fruit) perfectly complement the grassy quality of Jamaican rum.” —Mike Shain, general manager Ingredients: .75 oz. Smith and Cross Jamaican rum .75 oz. Appleton Estate V/X Jamaican rum .5 oz. lemon juice .5 oz. passion fruit syrup .25 oz. grenadine 1 dash Allspice Dram 1 dash Angostura bitters Glass: hurricane Garnish: lemon wheel, orange wheel, demerara rum Method: Build all of the ingredients in a mixing tin. THE DE LA CALLE MARGARITA AT TOLOACHE “This is a signature cocktail at Toloache: It’s so well loved for the cool sweetness of the cucumber, which is paired with picante jalapeños. It’s definitely one of my favorite margaritas and it’s perfect for the summer months.” —Julian Medina, chef and owner Ingredients: 2 oz. Don Diego Blanco tequila 2 oz. cucumber purée 1 oz. lime juice 1 oz. light agave nectar ½ bar spoon of jalapeños, finely chopped 1 fresh cucumber, seeded and diced (for the cucumber purée) Garnish: Tajín, to rim the glass (optional) 1 slice of cucumber, thin Directions: For the cucumber purée, place the cucumber in a blender (or food processor) and puree until smooth. Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake well. Strain the liquid into a chilled Tajín-rimmed rocks glass over ice and garnish with a thin slice of cucumber.

Frozen magaritas? Never. Try this tasty recipe from Toloache instead. It calls for finely chopped jalapeños—so you can be sure it’s a winner.

AVENUE MONTAIGNE AT LE BILBOQUET “Avenue Montaigne is considered to be la grande dame of French streets for high fashion—and it’s great for a summer stroll. To take diners back to the street and create a feeling of nostalgia—as if imbibers were sipping the cocktail while window shopping—we created the Avenue Montaigne cocktail, which includes light and citrusy flavors that can be enjoyed outdoors. The combination of Cointreau, Lillet White, and lemon juice provides light aromatics that make the drink approachable and refreshing during the warmer months.” —Yana Yankove, mixologist Ingredients: ¾ oz. Ketel One Citroen ¾ oz. Cointreau ¾ oz. Lillet White ¾ oz. lemon juice 3 dashes Absinthe bitters Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with an orange peel and orchid.

Avenue Montaigne—Le Bilboquet’s citrusforward cocktail—is best enjoyed alfresco.

THE ARNOLD PALMER COCKTAIL AT IL MULINO PRIME “An Arnold Palmer is the ultimate combination of two classic summer beverages: iced tea and lemonade. Our adult version has a stiff backswing, so you might want to finish that round of golf before knocking one back!” —Elvis Djesevic, bartender (recipe by Logan Ronkainen) Ingredients: 2 oz. Russian Standard Vodka 1 oz. Árvero limoncello ½ oz. simple syrup made with ORANGE AND LEMON zest Dash of 18.21 Earl Grey bitters Lemon wheel Preparation: Combine the vodka, limoncello, and simple syrup with ice in a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into an ice-packed Collins glass. Top with dash of Earl Grey bitters. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Calling for two ounces of Russian Standard vodka, Il Mulino Prime’s Arnold Palmer is no virgin drink. (Photo: Paul Crispin Quitoriano)

LINK RAY AT THE HAPPIEST HOUR “The link ray is a long and refreshing drink. It incorporates flavors that are savory, crisp, and herbaceous—while having more adventurous components than the usual lime, mint, and cucumber commonly found in summer drinks.” —Jim Kearns, head bartender and partner Ingredients: 1 ½ oz. jalapeño-infused tequila, rum, or gin ¾ oz. lime juice 2 oz. celery juice ½ oz. cane syrup ½ oz. Suze Preparation: Combine all ingredients, shake, and pour into highball glass half-rimmed with celery powder and salt. Top with soda and add ice. Garnish with celery stalk and black pepper.

Love the flavors of tequila, lime, and Suze? Then this cocktail is for you.

IN YACHTS

T

Superyacht, now Named GENESI,

he name “GENESI” (Italian for Genesis) has been chosen for the Wider 150, currently in construction in Ancona and due for delivery in late September of this year, because this represents a defining moment for the company founded in 2010 by Tilli Antonelli. Tilli has been involved in yacht building for the last 30 years and has delivered in excess of 200 yachts above 80’ although the Wider 150 is the largest to date. However, this will soon be surpassed by a 165’ model, also in construction in Ancona, and due for delivery in mid 2016. Whereas this larger yacht has been sold, the Wider 150 is available and represents the 110

most exciting new yacht in her size range on the market with a delivery in under 6 months. WIDER is the first yacht builder in the world to offer luxury yachts in the 125’-165’ (38m – 50m) size range with highly efficient diesel-electric propulsion system combined with Azimuthal pods and the latest technology in Lithium polymer battery power. This arrangement, widely used on much larger yachts and commercial vessels, offers numerous benefits including increased reliability, fuel efficiency, greater range, reduced noise, vibration

on Track for Delivery in September 2015 and maintenance, a shallow draft, greater flexibility of interior layout and 12 hours of complete silence at anchor using battery power alone.

while significantly increasing interior volumes compared to other motor yachts of a similar size.

Constructed entirely in aluminum to increase performance and allow for greater freedom and flexibility during the build process, GENESI’s elegant silhouette was created by Fulvio De Simoni in collaboration with Tilli Antonelli and the in-house WIDER design team.

GENESI provides a number of key features only usually found on larger vessels, which include, among others: - the biggest and most comfortable Beach Club in her competitive set, offering 90m² of magnificent relaxing space, easy access to the sea, and plenty room for sunbathing. The marine experience is further enhanced by an interior 7m seawater swimming pool;

GENESI has been conceived to enhance the owner’s contact with the sea,

Room with LiPo (Lithium polymer) battery pack in the stern. This leaves the noblest part of the vessel free for larger, more comfortable guest cabins located in the most stable part of the yacht. The overall propulsion system is completely modular, so GENESI can cruise using only the battery packs, in ZEM (Zero Emission Mode), or with up to four inline diesel generators. This means it can cruise at a higher range of speeds while continuing to enjoy limited specific fuel consumption. All onboard energy sources are controlled by the WIDER Power Management System, a smart and fully integrated system which controls the power supplied by the shore connection, the gen-set and the battery packs, distributing it between the hotel requirements, the propulsion system and the recharging of batteries, as required. Our special partner in this project, and the supplier of our Power Management system, is the market-leading Emerson Industrial Automation.

Tatooles still looks back to that formative era of gazing up at clouds and aspiring to snatch their sprawling beauty from the heavens for a short while. elcome to our over-the-top luxury kitchen gallery featuring kitchens with an estimated cost of $100,000 plus. These kitchen designs and estimates are from Zillow DigsTM (used with permission).

Please note that the costs attributed to the kitchens in this gallery are estimates only. However, simply looking at them, it’s not difficult to see they are extremely expensive and $100,000 is not out of line. What’s interesting is the incredible variety in design. There are modern kitchens, country kitchens, contemporary, Mediterranean, light, dark and every thing in between. There’s even a modern red kitchen. While most of us will never have such a kitchen, they’re fun to look at. After all, it’s not like $100,000 kitchens are everywhere. These are arguably some of the best custom home kitchens on the planet. In fact, carefully examining truly luxury kitchens can give you good ideas for your kitchen design. Of course unless you win the lotto, you can’t replicate these kitchens, but you can certainly get great design ideas.

Spacious white kitchen with dark flooring and countertops. Custom cabinetry throughout providing a great deal of storage. Intricate country kitchen with brick and stone work throughout. Cabinetry is a textured green. Kitchen layout is sprawling with several work areas.

Elegant country kitchen design with nice contrast of light and dark materials. Massive island with dining area is a focal point of this spacious kitchen. Of course, the beautifully beamed ceiling is hard to ignore and not appreciate as well.

Two tones of wood used throughout this custom kitchen. The cabinets and islands are built with stunning craftsmanship. The tile flooring provides a lightness to the otherwise dark wood tones.

Luxurious rustic U-shaped kitchen with natural wood throughout. The cabinetry, ceiling beams and flooring give the kitchen an authentic rustic decor. Yet the kitchen includes every modern convenience and top-ofthe-line appliances.

Luxurious white kitchen with wood floor with a splash of color provided by a bright blue portable butcher block. Notable features include the cabinet fixtures, glass-faced cabinets and the pot rack.

White kitchen with the distressed look made even more interesting with a large zebra-patterned floor.

Here is one of the most expensive kitchens in our gallery. It’s a stunning kitchen design, especially of you like darker kitchens.

I liken this to a diner-style kitchen. The kitchen is situated in a large open concept living area. The entire outer counter is an L-shaped diner counter with modern stools wrapping around the space. The countertops use one of the nicest looking granite patterns I’ve ever seen.

Luxury country kitchen. Multiple tones are used throughout the custom cabinetry – green, cream and dark wood. The honey-toned wood flooring adds to the multi-tone color motif. The ceiling includes decorative ceiling tiles which gives it more character and historical country look.

Luxury modern red kitchen with an astonishing amount of storage and working surface area.

Wedding Venue... is it Just for Indoors?

Golf Courses

Vineyard

For many, this setting offers an easy way to be outdoors while offering a nearby indoor area to hold a reception. You can set up chairs along the green and let the natural hue bring beautiful contrast to your color scheme. When the vows have been exchanged, your party can quickly transfer to an indoor area set up with food, drinks, and dancing. Alternatively, you could set up a wooden dance floor outside if the weather is in its prime. Be sure to tour many golf courses before making your final choice.

If you love the wine country, holding a wedding amidst the grapevines may be just the right choice for you. Take advantage of the rustic ambiance and capture photos while out and about on the vineyard. Many vineyards offer private tasting rooms that are large enough to accommodate your wedding party. If not, setting up an outdoor reception would be a great way to revel in the natural beauty. Of course, you’ll want to make sure there are plenty of bottles of wine and tapas to go around

f you live in a destination with temperate weather, you may want to take advantage of it by hosting your wedding outdoors. Many popular venues allow you to take advantage of natural beauty, light, and expansive seating arrangements. Indoor weddings can often be stuffy or cramped, and they also lack nature’s beautiful backdrop. Whether it’s a sunset on one of many private golf courses or just an intimate setting in your backyard, there are a variety of factors to take into consideration before making your final choice. Explore your options to discover which setting is right for you

Beach

Backyard

No one can deny the natural beauty of sandy shores and crashing waves. Whether you have your nuptials right on the water or on an overlooking cliff, you’ll surely add an extra flair to your special day. If it’s hot out, be sure to make your guests comfortable by supplying water and possibly outdoor fans. A great choice for beach weddings would be to hold the ceremony just outside a resort, allowing for an indoor reception to be just steps away. Preferably, the indoor area will have open light and access to the lush location.

If you want to work on a smaller budget while still enjoying some fresh air, consider hosting your wedding in your own backyard. If you don’t have ample space, try reaching out to family friends who have more accommodating properties. This would be a great time to pursue tents or outdoor lights to add some extra ambiance. Going this route is not only cost friendly, but also very personal and intimate. When you’re ready to commit to your venue, be sure to make visits and write down the pros and cons of each location. As with any outdoor wedding, be sure to double check the weather. 137

Whispers From the Sand

he 9/11 kids have grown up, and with them, a multitude of young men and women whose college degrees and promises of suburban bliss have been shattered by a desperate scramble for certainty among the ruins of a wounded economy. Their discontents, fueled by anxious childhoods and wartime paranoia, have left many with traces of undefined ambitions and a skeptical work ethic. It is their plight that marks the horror of disaster’s echoing haunts – phantoms of a missing decade where video games and high-school hookups were the remedy for mounting fears. It appeared as if nothing could cease the worries of youngsters perpetually unready for a grown-up world poised to reject their core values. For a generation that grew up glued to their digital lifestyles and doubtful of their parents’ analog dreams, it seemed almost destined

144

that someone would come along to find wisdom in this widening gap of age and resentment of accepted norms. It is in the fallout of such distance and exposure of instability that Staten-Island based writer and poet, Jonathan D. Pigno, unveils his own cultural revolution – touching upon anger, death, romance, and hope through a lens of sacred icons unique to both Tri-state area twenty-somethings and his national peers in waiting. With a sharp turn of phrase and uncompromised feeling, Pigno’s The Island Never Burned So Bright depicts a no-holds-barred, startling portrait of the contemporary consciousness that speaks to artists (and artists at heart) in an amalgam of religious, literary, and deeply intimate symbolism bound to resonate with those whose experience borders on less-than satisfying in a setting battered by repeat catastrophe and lingering setbacks.

In the wake of change, history, and personal trauma, local author Jonathan D. Pigno unearths renewed faith and poetic voice amidst the living memories of Staten Island’s post-Sandy shores…

Pigno’s initial motivation for the collection began in light of a major career change. A teacher who thirsted to show his learners something more than a grade, he set out to make a mark of his own. “I cared for my students immensely. But the best lesson I could ever give them was to accept who and what we are, otherwise it will eat us alive. I wasn’t myself donning a tie and neglecting my art. The most important part of writing is owning up to the role of authorship in spite of doubt. It is how we find voice. It is the way we build our story and confess to the need to create.” Taking the terms straight from his heart and putting them into motion, Pigno quit to write fulltime. This stance was not without major consequences, many of which were unforeseen: “My life literally changed overnight. You hear so many people say that, but it never seems plausible until it happens to you.” Struggling with loss on numerous fronts, the twenty-six year-old scribe decided he wanted to go big – to make his themes universal and reach outwards towards others that were wrestling with demons of their own. A South Shore resident his entire life, Pigno recalled the series of events from a previous autumn that altered both the internal and external landscape of his beloved hometown. Hurricane Sandy left a devastating trail all across the shoreline of Staten Island, ravaging homes and landmarks alike, fostering initial despair and an eventual optimism that has since become mirrored by local residents all across Richmond County. It is an infectious sort of belief, one that spoke to Pigno in his private quest to chronicle the budding sentiments that fostered his own journey toward newfound happiness. “The poems may come from a negative spot or place of unrest, but they all point toward the same ends,” he says, “an ultimate reconciliation between what can’t be changed and what we do have the power to influence – like the prayer they teach you when you’re very young. There is so much subjectivity in the world. But

we choose how to channel it, we consciously decide whether or not the gray area becomes black, white, or another color entirely.” With uniqueness abound and a quality of storytelling in its unapologetic sincerity, this anthology is only the beginning. Pigno has written nearly three-hundred and thirty pieces of writing before compiling this volume (of which less than a third were actually included). The number has since expanded. “If my goal was to traverse the entire mansion of a literary legacy, this release is merely one step into the foyer. I haven’t even gotten started.” With a bibliography of prior publications in short story anthologies, literary journals, and online outfits, Pigno aims to expand his repertoire and pantheon of works to include further compendiums of his genuine brand of prosaic musings and florid verse that consider the art of writing on the whole. “I’m already working on another text. It deals with the source of writing, the allegorical origin within one’s mind and the series of feelings or inclinations that contribute to its cause. I’m not trying to do anything more than be what I was called to be, to do what I know I need to because it was the only thing that ever made sense - the only thing that mattered. I feel that perhaps if I can bear my soul so openly and without hesitation on a page, then maybe all of us can reach a mutual place of understanding. We can connect in the way nature intended us to – to take away the pretense and strip ourselves to the beauty of who and what we really are, no judgments attached.” If this compilation is any indication, Pigno already has taken immense strides. The Island Never Burned So Bright is available through Amazon.com, in both print and Kindle digital format. A Night At The

T

By Jonathan D. Pigno

he beacon lights of Complex Cinemas were seen for miles from the rural backcountry roads on the evening the couple decided to make a date and escape into another world. Across distant highways shone their looming brilliance, focused pillars of radiance towering up into the August sky like columns of a manmade Olympus, a temple to the silver screen and homage to the immortal stars witnessed from all angles of the county. They were a stark contrast to the desolate and bleak scenery of perpetual forest and sleepy homes set far back into the woods, residences cutoff from mainstream culture and independent of society’s burdens. They were lingering sanctuaries of the objective, hideaways from harsher truths, and in some cases, the bright of those lights – reminders of coming progress and the inevitable gears of change. Those beams, like that fiery summer, were reminiscent of the sweltering division melting the once happy pair who entered the theater gates. This date was a last ditch effort to bridge that precious gap, and in some ways, a feeble strengthening of their devotion to similar interests. “Sir. Madam. Auditorium A is where your picture will be playing. Enjoy the show.” An usher took their ticket and pointed them to their left. The man grew cold and tense. He had just become very uncomfortable. It was unusual for an establishment of such lavish and obscene proportion to be situated out in the boondocks. Intriguingly, it was also the only time a building project of such scope was attempted within town limits in nearly sixty years. The original theater had been empty since the 1950’s, and its bones were left by the wayside for travelers to mourn as they drove. The townspeople often wished how someone would reopen its doors, if only for a switch of pace and opportunity for something new. When it finally had, very few residents even bothered to visit. At least that’s what they were told. It was what they had begun to witness. The woman remarked that it was bizarre to be so empty, cavernous, and even eerie – at a time of night coveted by sweethearts or perhaps attractive to more lonely dreamers. Her partner wasn’t listening. He grew distracted by the raucous. He was busy watching the kids, as a group of adolescents acting questionably and making noise. They stood there by the concessions and demanded immediate service. No one appeared to be working. The female jumped the counter and began filling a cup with butter. The other two pounced over the fountains 146

and poured popcorn into containers, making a giant mess and spilling soda onto the carpets. “See, that’s another problem with this place. There is never anyone to take your order. ‘Just have to pave your own way. Do things for yourself.” She laughed as they made a scene. The couple ignored their distractors and proceeded to leave the lobby. They found their seats in the dark, settling in and awaiting the coming previews. They never happened. The reel began in the midst of action, like it had been playing long before they arrived. The picture was a curious tale, a romance of acquired taste. It was a period piece set at a ball, where the king and queen sat uneasily in opposite corners of the room. They spoke frequently of their duties, how the kingdom was a restless sort – a place of angst and steep conundrums, a location unfit for their glory. They desired to run from their station, to be free and at ease to explore. But the charade of that affair kept them apart and unable to speak. All the while there were young knights and damsels, singing and waltzing in between. Their steps mimicked youthful effervescence, gracious and uninhibited in the way they swooped across the floor and twirled in their flowing dress. “Everyone knows old people can’t dance. That’s why they look like that. I’d be tired and angry too if I forgot to have fun.” The teens had entered the auditorium and were shouting from ten rows back. “You can’t dance either. And your idea of fun is coming here. That says an awful lot.” The girl seemed to be most unnerved by the behavior of her accompanying miscreants. She squirmed in her seat while maintaining a twisted grimace, trying to go along for the ride but clearly having a difficult time with it all. “Could you be quiet!” The man screamed from the front as the trio began to make a fuss. He stood up and walked through the dimness to reach their row. He leaned in and looked the older boy directly in the eye. “I am here on a date. An important date. You understand that, no? Help me out.” The boy merely looked at him, puzzled and suppressing his fear. “This is no place to take your girl on a date. This is a funhouse. The films here really get under your skin. They’re like a carnival ride to mess with your head.” “What do you mean?”

MULTIPLEX

“Admission for two, please.”

The youngster peered in all directions, as if concerned someone else might listen. “They are all different movies. But they say familiar things. It’s like they want you to know something. To push you in a direction. I’d call it a mirror, but mirrors don’t show you reflections that are similar. They show you things that are the same.” He leaned back arrogantly. “Go get her. See what’s in Auditorium B.” The man grabbed his partner and dragged her from her chair. “Come, we’re going.” They pursued the adolescents through the halls, admiring the red walls with golden fixtures and dome ceilings that spiraled overhead like hallowed cathedrals. Their voices echoed as they walked, reverberating through their surroundings like soundtracks of their own creation – moments captured in disturbing fleetingness and resounding through the circular corridors. The woman grew perplexed and came to a sudden halt, tugging at her boyfriend’s wrist and motioning to the group. “Why are we following them?” “They’ve seen something. They’ve been here before. They said they know why there is no one around.” She began to raise her voice. “Look, I know we’ve grown apart, but this proves it to me. You’ve lost your mind. I’ll admit, I’m unsettled by the fact it’s a Saturday night and we might be the only ones here. I also think it’s strange that the subject matter for a film we went into blind was a little bit personal. I also know that it’s fiction. Pretend. But you want me to believe something totally implausible for what - the sake of magic? Fireworks? That’s where the line gets drawn. I’m sorry time has passed. I’m sorry we got jaded. But we need to accept what’s gone.” He held her by the arms, tracing their length all the way across her shoulders and making his way toward her back. With a gentle motion, he brought her next to his chest. She leaned in as he spoke. “You wanted closeness. Change. I’m giving this one last chance. Let them show us what’s in Auditorium B. Then we can go.” They emerged from the grandiose entrance and into the darkened room, finding a group of seats just as the projector began to whirl. From there, the feature began, in startling black and white with its faded tinge and graininess. You could see a group of ruffians, gangsters and their femme fatales, welcome a pair of straights to a cabaret supper club. They seated

them to dinner and proceeded to put on a show – with music and exotic acts, comedians and nightly crooners. Wine was flowing like fountains. There were sparkles that dazzled in the air. An aura of intense seduction fell upon their booth as the pair gazed upon each other and fell in love through sheer exposure. It was madness and magnificent - unruly, but somehow fated. It was if the entertainers, the collaboration of their senses, gave submission to a dangerous muse and made them eager to explore their feelings. In classic noir sentiment, the gangsters couldn’t give up their lifestyle. They were young and enchantingly dangerous. They sacrificed their youth for the patrons, for business and the pleasure of seeking it. For everything but their truth, for safety and escaping the law. They kissed as they made their getaway. The theater lights soon came up. On the trip back to their vehicle, the couple walked arm-in-arm. The youngsters trotted alongside them, kicking pebbles of asphalt as they paced. Each of them remained poised in silence. The black brought a comforting stillness, something utterly intangible – a chill of extraordinary wind. It brought peace and implicit knowing. It was a mutual and acknowledged serenity. As they shuffled through midnight lot, the man turned to ask them a question. “So what was in Auditorium C?” The younger male finally spoke. He appeared to have mustered the courage. “It was a drama about an unhappy couple. They were aging and destined for marriage, but it was clear their passions were missing. It was the spark that kept them in love. But it had gone from years of sameness, the reality that brought them together. Then these kids came along and they changed. Through circumstance, they had to take care of them. The movie turned into something romantic. There was comedy and a charm to its meaning. I think it ended with them adopting. But I don’t think that’d really happen. I think that was just for the magic. For the wonder and spectacle of it all.” As he turned the key in the engine, the woman gleamed with unmistakable happiness, glowing toward her lover in the shadows. “Those kids were a special trouble. Like miracles you’d never expect. Do you think one day maybe it will happen? One day, will we have what we saw? He pulled out and back onto the highway, making his way toward the edge of the strip. It was as if he could feel the pull of the curtain, as if credits came pouring from his lips. “I think in this one, the ending is different. I think in in this one, the script lets us choose.” 147

IN FLASHBACK

SUMMER FUN ON “OLD STATEN ISLAND”

F

By John Louis Sublett

or those of us who were lucky enough to spend our summers on the island, we will remember, ‘The Place To Be’ was at the South Beach Rides at 326 Sand Lane. Who can forget, saving our Pepsi bottle caps for ½ price rides each Wednesday. Surely, a few of you still have a plaster statue or a piggy bank, that cost your parents about $20 to win at skeeball. How many of us can still hear that hideous voice of the ‘Laughing Lady’ at the Fun House.

My mom, like so many other moms, would sit solemnly on one of the many park benches, contently watching their children run from ride to ride. The roller coaster was, at it’s highest, maybe 15 feet, but for us kids it was like soaring through the air. This fun place of our childhood lasted from 1953 to 1999. Just up the block was a separate area called Beachland Amusements. This area had the fun house, bumper cars and various arcade games. Like the rides, Beachland Amusements succumbed to land developers and they closed down in 2006. As progress has done to so many of our memories, it is now just that, a fading memory.
