Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said that Indonesia has sufficient resources and reserves of nickel and cobalt, supported by other minerals such as copper, alumi num, and tin which will become a big capital to play in the electric vehicle industry.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, there were 15 nickel smelters operating as of the end of last year. The government expects a total of 30 nickel smelters to be operational by 2024 using the processing technology for nickel ore of RKEF (pyrometallurgy) and HPAL (hydrometallur gical) smelters.

Nickel industry has now been a game changer in mining and energy sectors as nickel is believed to play an important role in the global clean energy program toward net-zero emission target through the development of batteries for EVs and energy storage. It is predicted that by 2030, people globally are aware of reducing emissions and will encourage an increase in the demand for electric vehicles whose value can reach 31.1 million units. In Indonesia alone, the government targets to produce 600.000 units of four- wheeled electric vehicles and 2.45 million two-wheeled vehicles. Both are ranked top in the national list. Luhut has officially been elected as the Chairman of the Indonesian Athletics Association (PB PASI) for the period 2021-2025.
Mr Werner, holds a Bachelor of Management from the University of Sydney and has been involved in the mining industry for 20 years. He was a founding partner of PT Gemala Borneo Utama, a private Indonesian exploration and mining company, which developed a heap leach gold mine in West Kalimantan and also discovered the highly prospective Romang Island with then ASX-listed Robust Resources Limited which was acquired in 2012 by Indone sian business tycoon Anthony Salim.
Steven Brown is a mining industry veteran, based in Australia, who focuses on the responsible supply of battery metals. He is a respected voice on sustainability in mining, and has worked throughout the battery metals supply chain, from mine through to EV manufacturer. Previously, Steven worked in Indonesia, as General Manager Business Development at Vale.

In the earlier years of his career, Luhut led Indonesia's Garuda contingent serving under United Nations in Port Suez, Egypt, in 1974 and ended his military service as the Army's Education and Training Commander in 1999.
Also, he had various military training both domestic and foreign, including in United Kingdom with SAS, in West Germany with GSG9, and in the USA with different Army Special Forces units in Fort Bragg and Fort Benning as well as in the US Army John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School during the 1970s and 80s.
