Fulshear: The sleepy neighborhoods of Fulshear were suddenly awoken to thumping Bollywood music and confetti in the air as Namak Mirch Grocers celebrated their Grand Opening with Masala Radio on Sunday May 15th from 10am to 1pm. Mayor of Fulshear Aron Groff was thrilled to do the ribbon cutting honors. By 9am there was a big line of guests down to the end of the building and the line kept getting longer all afternoon. The owners of Namak Mirch Grocers - Manan Mehta and Mohammad Akram - treated the guests to samosas, jalebis and water to cool themselves in the blazing sun. Akrambhai and Mayor Groff handed out Silver Coins for the first 25 lucky guests. Mayor Groff said “What a crowd! Fulshear is officially the fastest growing city in Texas, and we welcome Namak Mirch to serve our growing South Asian population! Everyone here is laughing, eating, and shopping - this feels like a Festival. Looks like Masala Radio brought out everyone in Fulshear!” “We soft opened just a few weeks ago, and already we have a WhatsApp group of loyal customers nearing a thousand. There is not an Indian Grocery Store within 5 miles of us; we are so convenient for our customers - Indo-Pak groceries, fresh produce, and Halal meats” said Manan Mehta. The owners are from various parts of India, and have managed to pack in popular items for the surrounding Gujarati, Marati, Punjabi, Tamil, and the especially large Telegu & Telegana communities. The Grand Opening was such a Dhamaal, Sunil T entertained the audience with comedy, random contests, even an impromptu Garba dance in the middle of the store! The colorful tents, ethnic wind dancers, and torans brought out a summer vibe. And of course, the $3.99 Dals and $19.99 Basmati Rice sale is really unheard of in these times of supply shortages! “We wanted to offer some below cost deals to our customers with whom we want to build a long term bond,” said Akram. “Plans are underway already to expand the kitchen offerings and produce.” Manan Mehta and his lovely wife Farzeen helped check out the long line with a smile. Manan said “I never thought grand opening of our store would be a party, but Masala Radio rocked it. Sunil arrived in a Maharashtra Police car and people were taking pics with the jeep. I want to thank the Mayor, all our partners and families for helping out, and all the people of Fulshear and Katy for coming out. Please keep coming. Sewa’s 16th National Conference: Integrated Service Brings Inner Joy

Washington DC: In the backdrop of monumental relief work done during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US, and its second wave in India in 2020-2021, Sewa International volunteers gathered for Sewa’s 16th Annual National Conference in Washington, DC. Meeting after two virtual conferences in 2020 and 2021, nearly 100 Sewa volunteers, including Sewa’s board members, advisors, and the executive team, met on May 7 and 8 in the nation’s capital. Volunteers from Sewa’s 19 chapters participated in the conference. As the air filled with the excitement of meeting each other after a long gap, Sewa teams discussed and debated strategies to keep the growth and the momentum generated last year by its volunteers’ brave and timely work. Sewa International raised over $45 million from various corporations, foundations, and individuals for its pandemic relief efforts in 2021, and catapulted to the tenth place from its 375th spot last year on Benevity’s list of “Top Ten Charitable Causes Supported by Companies”. Ramakant Rambhatla, Vice President and Chief Engineer of Invacare Corporation, a US oxygen concentrator manufacturer was felicitated for helping Sewa procure the much-needed oxygen concentrators to help India deal with the

second wave of the pandemic. Invacare dramatically scaled up its production to help Sewa serve people in need. “We wanted to help and got a call from Sewa. We had a conference call on a Saturday morning at which our top Invacare officials participated. On Sunday, our production facilities geared up to meet the demand,” Rambhatla told the appreciative Sewa audience. Sewa International also felicitated organization’s Honorary Board Member Prof. Radheshyam Dwivedi at the conference. Portraying Prof. Dwivedi’s decades long service to the community and his unwavering commitment to Sewa’s vision, mission and work, Prof. Yashwant Pathak, member, Sewa’s board of advisors said Prof. Dwivedi personified an ideal

Sewa volunteer. Sewa’s President Arun Kankani, former President Prof. Sree Sreenath and members of the executive team felicitated Prof. Dwivedi. Integrated Approach “Human greed and a western belief that humans run everything has caused a grave imbalance in the world causing man-made catastrophes. In 1950 the world population was 2.5 billion, and within 70 years the human population has exploded to eight billion. Only an integrated approach to life as espoused by Hindu philosophy can save us from a disaster,” Suresh Jain, member, Sewa’s board of directors, said in his key note address at the inaugural session. “Time is now ripe for Sewa to frame a Hindu faith-based service concept that promotes a holistic

and symbiotic relationship with mother earth, culture, society, and family. Guided by dharma, this approach to life can create balance and effectively control deforestation, global warming, and other such destructive phenomena.” “Many of today’s service organizations are religious in nature, and they play a critical role in policy making in the West. They raise funds and resources through their congregations but mixing service with congregational goals can be problematic. Sewa should build a global narrative where the happiness of all and considering the whole world as one family are the principles guiding our outreach to communities and to those in need,” Suresh Jain said. Emphasizing the extended family-like atmosphere that inspires

and binds Sewa volunteers, President Arun Kankani asked Sewa chapters to share their experiences and resources to build sustainable teams. “What got us here may not take us to the next level. To sustain growth and promote volunteering in the community, we need to organize more events that connect us with each other at a deeper level,” he said. In his concluding remarks, Saumitra Gokhale, Global Coordinator for the Hindu Swayamasevak Sangh, said Sewa is now at an inflection point. “The organization achieved phenomenal growth while serving during the pandemic. We all want to serve as much as we can as it increases our inner joy. Compartmentalizing life into different activities is an often recommended western technique but it results in more stress. The Sewa way is to integrate our family, work, and service to live with joy,” he said. “The great Indian epic Mahabharata clearly says that the divine forces always align with the well deliberated, thought-through, and boldly implemented good actions. Volunteers and donors are Sewa’s great strength and caring and appreciating them will help Sewa scale greater heights,” Gokhale said.

IACAN Organizes Cancer Educational Event By Shikha Khatri

Houston: IACAN organized an educational event on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening on April 23rd at India House, Houston. The venue was teeming with curious high schoolers, concerned parents, and guardians eager to learn from the program “Act today for a better tomorrow.” “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou. In keeping with that thought, IACAN collaborated with the renowned Indian storyteller Nilesh Misra who presented via video and narrated a relatable, informative and empowering story about a cervical cancer survivor and concerned mother. The emotional tale and its compassionate rendition left a mark on the audience and hopefully inspired them to take right action. Dr. Surendranath S. Shastri Professor, Health Disparity Research, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was the key speaker who gave a riveting talk on Cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. He shared several anecdotes of how his outsidethe-box thinking and unusual approaches to educating people improved cervical cancer screening and mortality rates. Of the 150 types of human papilloma viruses (HPVs), types 16 and 18 cause ~70% of cervical cancer cases globally. In addition to cervical cancer, HPV causes vaginal, anal, penile, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancer. The immune systems of a majority of individuals that get infected with HPV can clear the infection. However, DNA damage to cells in individuals that harbor the virus results in precancerous lesions after a long latency of ~18 years. The Pap-test is used to screen for these

precancerous cells to prevent progress to full-blown cancer. Women 2129 years old should screen every three years by Paptest or every five years by HPV DNA testing. Most Dr. Surendranath S. Shastri health care centers offer co-testing (Pap smear and HPV DNA) for a thorough screen. Women <21 and >65 years do not need screening. Although cervical cancer screening is readily available, there is no recommended screening for other HPV-caused cancers like vaginal, anal, penile, vulvar, and oropharyngeal. HPV vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect against HPV types that cause these cancers. The currently available 9-valent vaccine is effective against nine types of HPV and can be obtained free of cost through the state health department. Boys and girls vaccinated before their 15th birthday need two doses, and those vaccinated after their 15th birthday need three doses. Immunocompromised or HIV-positive adults (22-45 years) also require three doses. The event concluded with an engaging dialog between the audience and the speaker. Of particular note was the enthusiastic participation from the high-schoolers of the partnering organization Unite and Inspire, who gained valuable information that they could use and share with friends.

Nataraj Statue Dedicated at Kannappan Art Museum

Houston: Dedication of Natarajar statue was held on Saturday May 14th 2022 at Kannappan Art Museums, Pearland. Viji Raja mceed the program. Sam Kannappan welcomed the distinguished gathering. Thomas Reid, Mayor Emeritus of Pearland and Chairman of the Museum mentioned that he suggested name Kannappan Art Museum and the museum will enhance the arts and culture in the city. Stacy Adams, Brazoria County Commissioner, mentioned that friendship with Kannappan started with resolving parking problems near Sri Meenakshi Temple. Ed Thompson, Texas State Representative said Kannappan is the pioneer in helping with settlement in Texas of people from India just like German settlement. Write up on Lord Natarajar by Viji Thiru was distributed. Malathi Sundar spoke of the Significance of Natarajar. Mayor Reid honored the donors of Natarajar statue, Sundar Chinnaraj & Rema Sundar, with a certificate and salvia. Kevin Cole, Mayor of Pearland, mentioned that he had a few meetings with museum organizers. Joseph Koza, Pearland City Councilman, said when he was in Pearland high school,

Fulshear: The sleepy neighborhoods of Fulshear were suddenly awoken to thumping Bollywood music and confetti in the air as Namak Mirch Grocers celebrated their Grand Opening with Masala Radio on Sunday May 15th from 10am to 1pm. Mayor of Fulshear Aron Groff was thrilled to do the ribbon cutting honors. By 9am there was a big line of guests down to the end of the building and the line kept getting longer all afternoon. The owners of Namak Mirch Grocers - Manan Mehta and Mohammad Akram - treated the guests to samosas, jalebis and water to cool themselves in the blazing sun. Akrambhai and Mayor Groff handed out Silver Coins for the first 25 lucky guests. Mayor Groff said “What a crowd! Fulshear is officially the fastest growing city in Texas, and we welcome Namak Mirch to serve our growing South Asian population! Everyone here is laughing, eating, and shopping - this feels like a Festival. Looks like Masala Radio brought out everyone in Fulshear!” “We soft opened just a few weeks ago, and already we have a WhatsApp group of loyal customers nearing a thousand. There is not an Indian Grocery Store within 5 miles of us; we are so convenient for our customers - Indo-Pak groceries, fresh produce, and Halal meats” said Manan Mehta. The owners are from various parts of India, and have managed to pack in popular items for the surrounding Gujarati, Marati, Punjabi, Tamil, and the especially large Telegu & Telegana communities. The Grand Opening was such a Dhamaal, Sunil T entertained the audience with comedy, random contests, even an impromptu Garba dance in the middle of the store! The colorful tents, ethnic wind dancers, and torans brought out a summer vibe. Sewa’s 16th National Conference: Integrated Service Brings Inner Joy

Washington DC: In the backdrop of monumental relief work done during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US, and its second wave in India in 2020-2021, Sewa International volunteers gathered for Sewa’s 16th Annual National Conference in Washington, DC. Meeting after two virtual conferences in 2020 and 2021, nearly 100 Sewa volunteers, including Sewa’s board members, advisors, and the executive team, met on May 7 and 8 in the nation’s capital. Volunteers from Sewa’s 19 chapters participated in the conference. As the air filled with the excitement of meeting each other after a long gap, Sewa teams discussed and debated strategies to keep the growth and the momentum generated last year by its volunteers’ brave and timely work. Sewa International raised over $45 million from various corporations, foundations, and individuals for its pandemic relief efforts in 2021, and catapulted to the tenth place from its 375th spot last year on Benevity’s list of “Top Ten Charitable Causes Supported by Companies”. Ramakant Rambhatla, Vice President and Chief Engineer of Invacare Corporation, a US oxygen concentrator manufacturer was felicitated for helping Sewa procure the much-needed oxygen concentrators to help India deal with the

second wave of the pandemic. Invacare dramatically scaled up its production to help Sewa serve people in need. “We wanted to help and got a call from Sewa. We had a conference call on a Saturday morning at which our top Invacare officials participated. On Sunday, our production facilities geared up to meet the demand,” Rambhatla told the appreciative Sewa audience. Sewa International also felicitated organization’s Honorary Board Member Prof. Radheshyam Dwivedi at the conference. Portraying Prof. Dwivedi’s decades long service to the community and his unwavering commitment to Sewa’s vision, mission and work, Prof. Yashwant Pathak, member, Sewa’s board of advisors said Prof. Dwivedi personified an ideal

Only an integrated approach to life as espoused by Hindu philosophy can save us from a disaster,” Suresh Jain, member, Sewa’s board of directors, said in his key note address at the inaugural session. “Time is now ripe for Sewa to frame a Hindu faith-based service concept that promotes a holistic

and symbiotic relationship with mother earth, culture, society, and family. Guided by dharma, this approach to life can create balance and effectively control deforestation, global warming, and other such destructive phenomena.” “Many of today’s service organizations are religious in nature, and they play a critical role in policy making in the West. They raise funds and resources through their congregations but mixing service with congregational goals can be problematic. Sewa should build a global narrative where the happiness of all and considering the whole world as one family are the principles guiding our outreach to communities and to those in need,” Suresh Jain said. Emphasizing the extended family-like atmosphere that inspires

and binds Sewa volunteers, President Arun Kankani asked Sewa chapters to share their experiences and resources to build sustainable teams. “What got us here may not take us to the next level. To sustain growth and promote volunteering in the community, we need to organize more events that connect us with each other at a deeper level,” he said. In his concluding remarks, Saumitra Gokhale, Global Coordinator for the Hindu Swayamasevak Sangh, said Sewa is now at an inflection point. “The organization achieved phenomenal growth while serving during the pandemic. We all want to serve as much as we can as it increases our inner joy. Compartmentalizing life into different activities is an often recommended western technique but it results in more stress. The Sewa way is to integrate our family, work, and service to live with joy,” he said. “The great Indian epic Mahabharata clearly says that the divine forces always align with the well deliberated, thought-through, and boldly implemented good actions. Volunteers and donors are Sewa’s great strength and caring and appreciating them will help Sewa scale greater heights,” Gokhale said.

IACAN Organizes Cancer Educational Event By Shikha Khatri

Houston: IACAN organized an educational event on HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening on April 23rd at India House, Houston. The venue was teeming with curious high schoolers, concerned parents, and guardians eager to learn from the program “Act today for a better tomorrow.” “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou. In keeping with that thought, IACAN collaborated with the renowned Indian storyteller Nilesh Misra who presented via video and narrated a relatable, informative and empowering story about a cervical cancer survivor and concerned mother. The emotional tale and its compassionate rendition left a mark on the audience and hopefully inspired them to take right action. Dr. Surendranath S. Shastri Professor, Health Disparity Research, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was the key speaker who gave a riveting talk on Cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. He shared several anecdotes of how his outsidethe-box thinking and unusual approaches to educating people improved cervical cancer screening and mortality rates. Of the 150 types of human papilloma viruses (HPVs), types 16 and 18 cause ~70% of cervical cancer cases globally. In addition to cervical cancer, HPV causes vaginal, anal, penile, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancer. The immune systems of a majority of individuals that get infected with HPV can clear the infection. However, DNA damage to cells in individuals that harbor the virus results in precancerous lesions after a long latency of ~18 years. The Pap-test is used to screen for these

precancerous cells to prevent progress to full-blown cancer. Women 2129 years old should screen every three years by Paptest or every five years by HPV DNA testing. Most Dr. Surendranath S. Shastri health care centers offer co-testing (Pap smear and HPV DNA) for a thorough screen. Women <21 and >65 years do not need screening. Although cervical cancer screening is readily available, there is no recommended screening for other HPV-caused cancers like vaginal, anal, penile, vulvar, and oropharyngeal. HPV vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect against HPV types that cause these cancers. The currently available 9-valent vaccine is effective against nine types of HPV and can be obtained free of cost through the state health department. Boys and girls vaccinated before their 15th birthday need two doses, and those vaccinated after their 15th birthday need three doses. Immunocompromised or HIV-positive adults (22-45 years) also require three doses. The event concluded with an engaging dialog between the audience and the speaker. Of particular note was the enthusiastic participation from the high-schoolers of the partnering organization Unite and Inspire, who gained valuable information that they could use and share with friends.

Nataraj Statue Dedicated at Kannappan Art Museum

Houston: Dedication of Natarajar statue was held on Saturday May 14th 2022 at Kannappan Art Museums, Pearland. Viji Raja mceed the program. Sam Kannappan welcomed the distinguished gathering. Thomas Reid, Mayor Emeritus of Pearland and Chairman of the Museum mentioned that he suggested name Kannappan Art Museum and the museum will enhance the arts and culture in the city. Stacy Adams, Brazoria County Commissioner, mentioned that friendship with Kannappan started with resolving parking problems near Sri Meenakshi Temple.
