RECRUITING WITH AI? NEW GUIDANCE IS INTELLIGENT READING

Like many HR professionals you’re excited by the opportunities that AI presents, not least in the field of recruitment But you’re equally aware of the need to use it responsibly The government has published new guidance on procuring and deploying AI in the recruitment process, for example, during the sourcing, screening, interview or selection stages Is it worth a look?

The government says the guidance has been written for a “non-technical audience and assumes a minimal understanding of AI” It: identifies the potential ethical risks of using AI in recruitment and hiring processes, such as perpetuating existing biases and the risk of digital exclusion for job applicants who may not be proficient in technology due to age, disability, etc. outlines how AI assurance mechanisms for procurement and deployment can provide you with the tools, processes and metrics to evaluate the performance of AI systems, manage these risks and ensure compliance with statutory requirements

In the sections on assurance mechanisms, the guidance provides suggested questions to ask and explains the considerations that you should take into account both before and during the procurement process and before deployment of the new AI system. Once the new AI system is live, it then advises to set up regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure it continues to perform as expected over time

The assurance mechanisms covered in the guidance include: putting in place an AI governance framework conducting impact assessments, including a data protection impact assessment carrying out bias audits performance testing model cards (a reporting tool produced by AI developers for capturing key information about AI models) training and upskilling employees having a user feedback system.

Although the guidance isn’t technical as such, neither is it an easy read as it runs to 49 pages in length and it covers a lot of ground, some of which you may not be familiar with That said, if you are looking at starting to use AI systems as part of your recruitment process, it’s an essential read. You’ll need to work your way through each stage of the guidance, in conjunction with your IT and data protection teams.

The guidance is worth a look if you’re seeking to procure and deploy AI systems in your recruitment processes It will take time though to go through each stage - don’t assume it’s a ten-minute read!
