Colombia withdraws statement condoling terrorists killed in ‘Operation Sindoor’

Bogota, May 31 (IANS) Colombia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio has said that her country was withdrawing its

inadvertent statement expressing condolences over the deaths in Pakistan from 'Operation Sindoor', according to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading a Parliamentary delegation.

“The vice minister very graciously mentioned they have withdrawn the statement that we had expressed concern about, and that they fully understand our position on the matter, which

is something we really value”, Tharoor told the media after their meeting here on Friday.

Tharoor had earlier expressed disappointment with Colombia’s statement that appeared to give the impression of a false equivalency between the terrorists killed by 'Operation Sindoor' and their victims in Pahalgam.

India replaces Japan as world’s 4th largest economy, poised to overtake Germany for 3rd rank

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) India has surpassed Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy and is now poised to displace Germany from the third rank in the next 2.5 to 3 years, said NITI Aayog Chief

Executive Officer (CEO) B.V.R. Subrahmanyam.

“We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy as I speak, and this is not my data. This is IMF data. India today is larger than Japan," said Subrahmanyam at a press conference of the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting.

"It's only the United States, China, and Germany which are larger,

and if we stick to, you know, what is being planned, what is being thought through, it's a matter of another 2, 2.5 to 3 years; we would become the third largest economy,” Subrahmanyam pointed out.

The IMF had stated earlier this month in the World Economic Outlook report that India is poised to become the world’s

Ankita Bhandari murder: Uttarakhand ex-minister’s son, 2 others get life term

With Tharoor standing alongside, Villavicencio said, “We are very confident that with the explanations that we received today and with the detailed information that we now have regarding the real situation on what happened in Kashmir, we can now follow and continue the dialogue”.

Getting the message of the impact of terrorism to Colombia, a country that had suffered its ravages, is significant as it is expected to take a seat on the UN Security Council next year.

It is running unopposed for the Latin American seat in next week’s election.

During a meeting with Colombian media on Thursday, Tharoor said that India was “a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims

of terrorism” in Jammu and Kashmir.

Instead of taking exception to the criticism, Colombia immediately took note of India’s concerns about the statement issued before having a full understanding of the situation, and acted to mitigate it.

Setting the stage for the withdrawal of Colombia’s statement on Pakistan, former President Cesar Augusto Gaviria Trujillo, a leader of the largest party in Congress, said on Thursday, “Colombia has solidarity with India. We check any kind of terrorism, (and) be certain that under any circumstances, we will be on your side.”

The delegation has made headway on creating a nuanced understanding of the situation after the Pahalgam massacre by The Resistance Front, an affiliate of Lashkar-e-Tayiba that is based in Pakistan and backed by it, and the rationale for 'Operation Sindoor'.

At the Friday meeting with Villavicencio, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said on X the Parliamentarians “briefed her on the sequence of events, from the Pahalgam terror attack to India’s calibrated response under 'Operation Sindoor.'”

The MPs also met with members of the Colombian Congress, including Alejandro Toro, resident of the Second Commission of the Chamber of Representatives, and Jaime Raul. The Second Commission is the panel responsible for international relations.

The Colombian leaders presented Tharoor with a wool poncho for Delhi's winter, and a Colombian hat, Tharoor said on X.

The delegation held “an indepth and wide-ranging interaction” with the nation’s premier world affairs think tank, Consejo Colombiano de Relaciones Internacionales –CORI (Colombian Council on International Relations). the Embassy in Bogota said on X.

fourth-largest economy in 2025, with the country’s nominal GDP rising to $4,187.017 billion to surpass Japan’s GDP pegged at $4,186.431 billion.

According to the report, India continues to remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy and the only country expected to clock over 6 per cent growth in the next two years.

The high rate of growth will see India’s GDP increasing to $5,584.476 billion in 2028 as it overtakes Germany to become the third-largest economy.

The IMF has projected a zero growth rate for Germany in 2025, followed by 0.9 per cent in 2026 as

it is expected to be hit the hardest among the European countries due to the ongoing global trade war. Germany’s GDP is projected at $5,251.928 billion in 2028. Japan, on the other hand, is expected to be hard hit by the global trade war, with its growth stagnating at 0.6 per cent for 2025 and 2026.

The GDP of the US, the world’s largest economy, has been pegged at $30,507.217 billion for 2025, while that of China, the second biggest, is $19,231.705 billion.

The US, which has triggered the tariff turmoil across the globe, is expected to see its GDP growth slowing to 1.8 per cent this year, which is expected to decline

further to 1.7 per cent in 2026, according to the IMF report. Similarly, the Euro Area is forecast to slow to a mere 0.8 per cent growth rate in 2025 before it makes a mild recovery at 1.2 per cent in 2026. France is predicted to post a 0.6 per cent and 1 per cent growth for the two years, respectively.

Spain is expected to do better than the other in 2025 as the only European country to clock a 2.5 per cent growth rate. However, it is expected to slow down to 1.8 per cent in 2026. The UK is expected to post a 1.1 and 1.4 per cent growth respectively for the two years.

wife, and their three children -two daughters and a son.

Initial reports indicate that the tragic event occurred on Sunday while the family was returning to Dehradun after the conclusion of the five-day Hanuman Katha at the spiritual centre.

While searching for a hotel near Sector 27, Praveen Mittal allegedly took the drastic step, consuming poison along with his entire family, sources said.

Locals in the vicinity were the first to notice the family inside a parked vehicle, appearing unwell and struggling. Alarmed by the scene, they immediately informed the police.

Responding to the call, the police arrived at the location and forcibly opened the car doors in an attempt to rescue the unconscious family members. The victims were rushed to both a private and a civil hospital in the area, but medical personnel declared all seven individuals dead upon arrival. Following the incident, the bodies were moved to a private hospital in Panchkula for post-mortem examinations. Speaking to the media, DCP Himadri Kaushik said, "Upon initial probe, it seemed like a case of suicide. However, the investigation is underway. Our forensic team has reached the spot. They are collecting all the

murdering Ankita, who worked as a receptionist at Vanantra Resort located in Yamkeshwar.

The court held the trio guilty under penal provisions dealing with murder (IPC Section 302), offence committed by an enforcing authority (Section 210b) and causing disappearance of evidence (Section 201).

According to the police, Ankita,19, was killed on September 18, 2022 and her body was dumped in Chilla canal in Rishikesh, from where it was retrieved about six days after she went missing.

According to the prosecution, Ankita and Pulkit Arya had a dispute over something, after which the man, along with Bhaskar and Gupta, allegedly pushed the woman into the canal.

Resort owner Pulkit is the son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya who was a minister in the Uttarakhand government till 2021.

The case had made national headlines after the local people came out and protested over the murder as the law enforcement agencies were dragging their feet on the probe into the murder.

On Friday, the court resembled a fortress due to heightened security, with only lawyers and family members of the victim and convicts allowed to attend the proceedings. A ring of noentry zone of 200 metre was also thrown around the court complex. The BJP had sacked Vinod Arya from the party after the controversy and the Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.

organisation focussed on community-based preservation of wildlife.

He fought for stronger anti-poaching laws and the preservation of natural tiger habitats.

The environmentalist's father, Romesh Thapar, was a noted journalist.

Thapar married theatre artist Sanjana Kapoor, and they were blessed with a son, Hamir.

The environmentalist was inspired by Fateh Singh Rathore, a renowned Indian conservationist and a key member of the Project Tiger team.

Notably, Thapar's famous relationship with 'Macchli', a female tigress, is documented in

some of his works.

Thapar, who served as a member of the Tiger Task Force of 2005 in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, had opposed the majority Task Force view, which was optimistic about the co-existence of tigers and humans.

Soon after Thapar's demise, condolences started pouring in. Congress leader and former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh expressed grief over his demise, saying it is a great loss. Jairam Ramesh posted on the social media platform X, "Valmik Thapar, a legendary figure in the world of conservation over the past four decades, especially tigers, has just passed away. It is a great loss."

evidence from the crime scene and will analyse it scientifically."

According to the sources, a suicide note was also found inside the car. The note, reportedly written by the head of the family, cited overwhelming financial debt and pressure as the main reasons for the tragic decision.

Forensic experts are currently examining the note and other material recovered from the scene to verify its authenticity and context.

"The entire matter is under investigation by the forensic team," said DCP Law and Order Amit Dahiya, who, along with DCP Himadri Kaushik, reached the spot after receiving news of the incident.

Programme Execution Model.

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is set to execute the programme through Industry partnership,” said the Ministry in a statement.

The ADA is a dedicated arm of the DRDO that was established to oversee the development of India’s Light Combat Aircraft programme. It will lead the project in partnership with private industry partners. An Expression of Interest (EoI) for the AMCA Development Phase will be issued soon.

“Both private and public sector entities would do bidding for the project, either independently or as a joint venture or as consortia. The entity/bidder should be an

Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country,” said the MoD statement.

The AMCA, widely seen as India’s answer to fifth-generation air power, will give a major boost to achieving ‘atmanirbharata’ in the defence sector and will become a hallmark of India’s growing defence capabilities.

Being the fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter equipped with cutting-edge technology, it will be suited for all-weather operation. Designed with low radar cross-section and supercruise capability, the AMCA is seen as the successor to the frontline Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. Some reports suggest that its mass production is likely to commence by 2035.

Rajouri farmers get relief after ceasefire, resume agricultural activities

Rajouri, May 24 (IANS) Following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after Operation Sindoor, the border areas of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir had experienced a significant threat of conflict, deeply impacting the lives of local residents, especially farmers. However, with the recent ceasefire agreement in place, normalcy has gradually returned, bringing much-needed relief to the region's farming community. The ceasefire has sparked renewed enthusiasm among farmers in Rajouri. With the threat of cross-border firing subsiding, agricultural activities have resumed in full swing. The local Agriculture Department has also ramped up efforts to support farmers by increasing seed distribution.

Recurring ceasefire violations

from across the border had disrupted farming in the region.

Many farmers had feared losing their crops and investments due to the unsafe conditions. But now, with peace returning, the mood among farmers has shifted to optimism.

The maize sowing season is currently underway, and farmers have started collecting seeds from government offices to begin their cultivation. The Agricultural Department in Rajouri is actively engaged in supporting them with better quality inputs.

IANS spoke to villagers and farmers from the border areas, where they expressed their gratitude for the restored peace and appealed to the government to ensure long-term stability in the region. They emphasised how the truce has brought safety to their lives and allowed them to return to farming without fear.

One farmer from Rajouri said, “We hope this peace lasts for a long time. Only then can we plan for our future and lead stable, secure lives. The ceasefire should

continue. We lived in fear due to the tensions between India and Pakistan.”

Another farmer added, “We faced a lot due to shelling from Pakistan. I’m happy that we are now getting seeds at government rates. If the ceasefire hadn’t happened, farmers would have faced many difficulties, as farming is our main livelihood in this area. I am very happy.”

Abhinash, another farmer, said, “I am happy about the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. We have returned to farming. I came here to buy seeds. If the ceasefire hadn’t happened, it would have been very difficult for us.”

Chief Agriculture Officer of Rajouri, Madan Pal Singh, said, “This time, keeping in mind the needs of the farmers, the department has shown special enthusiasm in distributing seeds. We have procured a larger quantity of maize seeds than in previous years to avoid any shortages. High-quality hybrid seeds are being distributed to ensure better yield and productivity.”

Northeast is new epicentre of India’s development journey: Jayant Chaudhary

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS)

The northeastern region is no longer on the periphery of India but is the new epicentre of India’s development journey, Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said on Saturday.

Speaking at the ‘Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025’ here, the minister said that from Mizoram achieving 100 per cent literacy rates to the entrepreneurial spirit of its youth, the region exemplifies resilience and

community strength.

“As we celebrate this transformation, we must nurture risk-taking, skill development, and ecosystem support to unlock its potential,” he told the gathering.

Mentioning the ‘Skilling for AI Readiness’ (SOAR) programme, which the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is currently developing in collaboration with Ministry of Education and NCVET, he added, “The future lies in AI, and India must lead by building indigenous models and preparing our youth for an AI-driven world”.

“Through ‘Skilling for AI Readiness’, we plan to equip students with tools to innovate ethically using AI. The collective spirit of the Northeast, paired with national support, is a beacon of progress. We must harness this

energy, break old mindsets, and build a future where every young mind from Arunachal to Assam shapes India’s global narrative," Chaudhary added.

The northeastern region is witnessing rapid growth and is on track to become one of the country’s major economic hubs.

“From the tea gardens of Assam to digital creators in Shillong, the Northeast is not waiting for change — it is architecting it. And it is time the rest of India, and the world, invests in that spirit,” said the minister.

On the sidelines of the summit, a dedicated ‘Udyamita se Atmanirbhar Pavilion’ set up by MSDE, showcased the entrepreneurial spirit of the northeast, featuring eight dynamic entrepreneurs trained by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE).

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) Showering praise on Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday showcased Andhra Pradesh’s reforms and growth story at the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting, an official said.

“All states should examine and study the reforms of Andhra Pradesh. There could be a lot of inputs in the blueprint for growth projected by CM Naidu for other states also," the PM was quoted as having said at the meeting.

The Andhra Pradesh official said, in a statement, that while addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, and lauded the Armed Forces’ success in Operation Sindoor.

He also commended PM Modi’s strong leadership during the crisis, emphasising India’s resilience and self-reliance.

Commending PM Modi’s

leadership for the economy’s progress from the world’s 10th to 4th, CM Naidu acknowledged transformative reforms like Digital India, GST, Startup India, PM Gati Shakti, and Jal Jeevan Mission, which have redefined India’s development landscape. He noted that having the right leader at the right time has been crucial in steering the nation toward its ambitious goals in the right direction.

CM Naidu also highlighted that under its Swarna Andhra @2047 vision, Andhra Pradesh aims to achieve Zero Poverty by 2029 through the innovative P4 model, which unites government, private sector, and citizen efforts to support vulnerable families and promote economic upliftment.

Assam: Wages of tea garden labourers hiked

Guwahati, May 24 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced a hike in the daily wages of tea garden labourers in the state, asserting that it would bring joy to the community.

The enhanced wages apply to tea garden labourers working in tea gardens under Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL).

Taking to X, Sarma wrote, “Moment of joy for our hardworking Cha Shramiks! Starting October 1, workers of ATCL tea gardens will get an enhanced wage of Rs 250/day, which will help them boost their livelihood and support their families.”

The groundwork began in 2018 and has now reached its final phase. So far, optical fibre cables have been laid over a distance of nearly 55,000 kilometres, covering 11,800 villages. Some delays were encountered in certain locations, particularly in forest regions, due to challenges in obtaining clearances and executing cablelaying operations. However, the government has announced that all pending work is expected to be completed by next month.

“Govt of Assam: Dedicated to the welfare of our tea tribe’s community,” he added.

At present, the tea garden labourers have been getting Rs 220 per day as wages.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the Indian Army's powerful response to the Pahalgam terror attack, a Guwahati-based tea entrepreneur has found a unique and deeply meaningful way to express solidarity and gratitude through

tea.

The tea entrepreneur has launched a special tea blend titled "Sindoor – The Pride", as a tribute to the Indian Armed Forces for their decisive strike in Operation Sindoor, conducted on May 7 in retaliation for the brutal killing of innocent tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.

“Sindoor is a symbol of pride in Indian society. We are proud that India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. As a tea entrepreneur, I wanted to pay homage to the Indian Army in my own way. So, I launched a tea pack named ‘SINDOOR – The Pride’ as a salute to the forces,” said the tea entrepreneur.

He said that the tea packs are not for sale. Instead, they have been specially crafted to be gifted to the Indian soldiers, to offer a symbolic gesture of respect, appreciation, and unity.

“I have created these tea packs especially as gifts for the Indian Army. We celebrate every happy occasion with a cup of tea, and this is no different. This special blend has been made by combining Assam’s finest teas — Halmari Gold Orthodox and premium CTC. Rich red is the colour of the brew, which is reminiscent of Sindoor,” he added.

Cancer-stricken Tata Steel manager dies by suicide along with family in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, May 24 (IANS) In a tragic incident that has shaken the city, a Tata Steel senior manager battling cancer allegedly died by suicide along with his wife and two daughters at their residence in Chitragupt Nagar, Adityapur in Jamshedpur, late Friday night, officials said on Saturday.

Police said the bodies of Krishan Kumar (40), his wife Dolly Devi (35), and daughters Pinky (15) and Mainiya (7) were found hanging from different nooses in the same room.

The door of the house was locked

from inside, and police had to force entry around 11 p.m. after being alerted by neighbours.

No suicide note was recovered from the scene, and the police said investigations are underway.

A forensic team was also called in to examine the site, and the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.

Krishan Kumar was reportedly suffering from third-stage cancer and had recently returned from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai after undergoing treatment.

He was advised chemotherapy, and he had applied for the procedure to be continued in Jamshedpur.

Neighbours told police that they had not seen any member of the family since Wednesday evening. A foul smell emanating from

the house on Friday evening prompted them to alert officials. Krishan Kumar’s father, Savind Tiwari, said that his son had been struggling with depression after learning of his diagnosis. Tiwari had accompanied the couple to Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital for treatment and said they had returned to Jamshedpur due to the availability of chemotherapy facilities here.

The exact timing of the deaths is still not known, but police suspect the incident occurred on Wednesday or Thursday night. The tragedy has left the neighbourhood in shock.

Police are also investigating whether Krishan Kumar’s wife and children committed suicide along with him, or they were killed first and then hanged.

From struggles to success: How PM Mudra Yojana transformed the lives of small shopkeepers

Shajapur, May 24 (IANS) In the heart of Shajapur district, Madhya Pradesh, two determined shopkeepers -- Lakhan Goswami and Manoj -- are now living a dream they once thought was out of reach. Just a few years ago, both men were grappling with financial instability, struggling to keep their small businesses afloat. Limited capital meant limited growth. But today, their shops are thriving hubs of activity, and the credit goes to one transformational initiative: the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY).

Launched with the aim of empowering small and microentrepreneurs, the Mudra Yojana offers collateral-free loans of up to Rs 10 lakh. For Lakhan and Manoj, this was more than just financial assistance -- it was the key to a new beginning.

"I used to manage my shop with great difficulty. There was never enough stock, and I couldn’t expand," recalls Lakhan Goswami, who runs a small general store.

“But after I got the Mudra loan, I could buy more inventory and even upgrade my shop. Business has picked up, and my income has almost doubled. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making this possible.”

For Manoj, a local tea stall owner, the scheme meant being able to serve more customers and add a snack counter.

“Earlier, I didn’t have the money to buy even a new stove or

utensils. Now, I run a neat setup that draws a good crowd every day,” he said with a smile.

The Mudra Yojana charges no processing fee, and loans are easily accessible through banks and financial institutions. It is tailored for small traders, vendors, artisans, and others in the informal sector—people who are often overlooked by traditional credit systems.

More than just numbers, these stories highlight the transformative power of inclusive governance. As thousands of small entrepreneurs like Lakhan and Manoj find new hope, the scheme is also giving a boost to the grassroots economy.

The journey from struggle to selfreliance for these shopkeepers is a testament to how visionary policymaking can change lives — and build a stronger, self-reliant India.

Patriotism in every bite: ‘Sindoor’ mango launched to salute soldiers and PM Modi

As the nation celebrates the success of Operation Sindoor, a farmer in Bihar has found a sweet and symbolic way to honour the moment — by naming a mango after the operation. Meet Ashok Chaudhary, popularly known as “Mango Man” of Maheshi Tilakpur, Sultanpur, Bhagalpur, whose orchard is now home to a new mango variety called ‘Sindoor’.

accountability. In this, various departments have achieved more than 700 goals. Now, a 150-day program has been undertaken. A long-term vision for 2047, Maharashtra will celebrate its Amrit Mahotsav, for that period, i.e. for 2035 and a short-term 5-year vision for 2029 with annual goals is being prepared,” said the chief minister.

CM Fadnavis said that the objective of the new industrial policy is to increase the contribution of the manufacturing sector to GSDP above 20 per cent. The single window clearance system, Maitri 2.0, has been implemented, and new sectors like EV, semiconductor, green hydrogen, and data centres are being encouraged.

This is a tribute to the Indian Army and a gesture of respect towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Known for his creativity and patriotic spirit, Ashok Chaudhary has long combined his love for mangoes with national pride.

In 2014, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, Ashok named a mango variety Modi 1, which quickly gained popularity for its rich taste and unique appeal. It was followed by Modi 2 in 2019 and Modi 3 in 2024, with versions named Modi Green and Modi Rangin — colourful, vibrant, and full of flavour, just like the themes they represent.

Now, in 2025, as India celebrates the triumph of Operation Sindoor

against terrorism, Ashok has introduced ‘Sindoor Mango’ to mark the occasion. “This mango is not just some fruit, it's a message of victory, pride, and the sweetness of national unity,” he said. The Sindoor mango is described as extremely sweet and flavourful, and carries the emotional essence of India’s spirit.

Ashok’s orchard, Madhuban, is already famous for its colourful and exotic mangoes, many of which are named after national events, personalities, and missions. With Sindoor, he aims to bring a taste of patriotism to every household.

Ashok’s dream is to have the Sindoor mango served to Prime Minister Modi and Indian Army personnel, much like the renowned Zardalu mango of Bihar, which has reached Rashtrapati Bhavan in the past.

“This is my salute to the courage of our jawans and the leadership of our Prime Minister,” he said with pride.

Through mangoes, Ashok Chaudhary is not just cultivating fruit — he’s cultivating respect, remembrance, and national pride.

North Korea in ‘strongest strategic position’ in decades: US intel report

Washington, May 24 (IANS) North Korea stands in its "strongest strategic position" in decades, a US intelligence report showed, as the recalcitrant regime has been doubling down on its pursuit of advanced weapons that can threaten US forces and allies in Northeast Asia, and the US mainland.

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) under the US Department of Defense on Friday offered the analysis in the '2025 Worldwide Threat Assessment' that covered a wide range of security challenges from North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, and other state and nonstate actors.

The assessment came amid deepening concerns over North Korea's evolving nuclear and ballistic missile threats and its military alignment with Russia based on the two countries' "comprehensive strategic partnership" treaty signed in June last year.

"North Korean leader Kim Jongun is increasingly confident in his

international political legitimacy and regime security," the DIA said in the report.

"North Korea is in its strongest strategic position in decades, possessing the military means to hold at risk US forces and US allies in Northeast Asia while continuing to improve its capability to threaten the US homeland," it added.

The report noted that in return for support for its war against Ukraine, Russia has been expanding its sharing of space, nuclear and missile applicable technology, expertise and materials to North Korea, China and Iran, which it said will enable advancements in the three countries' weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs during the "next three to five years."

"North Korea continues to illicitly procure items for its missile program that it cannot produce domestically, often in cooperation with Chinese and Russian nationals," the agency said.

"Similarly, North Korea almost certainly will continue marketing and proliferating ballistic missile systems and related technology to other countries of concern, as demonstrated by its provision of missiles to Russia for use in

Ukraine."

The agency pointed out that Pyongyang continues to support its nuclear weapons program and increase its nuclear weapons stockpile by producing plutonium and highly enriched uranium, reports Yonhap news agency.

"North Korea has restored its nuclear test site and is now postured to conduct a seventh nuclear test at a time of its choosing," it said.

The DIA assessed that Pyongyang "probably" has a biological warfare program and "almost certainly" has a chemical warfare program with the capability to produce nerve, blister, blood and choking agents.

It described the North's Special Operations Force (SOF) as "highly trained," "well equipped", and capable of infiltrating into South Korea.

"North Korea's SOF deployment to Russia will enable North Korea to use lessons learned from that experience for future combat training," it said.

Portraying the North as one of the world's most militarised nations, the agency said the reclusive country has more than 1 million active-duty personnel and more than 7 million reserve and paramilitary personnel.

Pakistan violated spirit of Indus Water Treaty through terror: India

United Nations, May 24 (IANS) India has charged Pakistan with violating the Indus Water Treaty by trampling its spirit of goodwill through thousands of terrorist attacks and by obstructing the updating of the infrastructure to ensure its safety.

“Despite this, India has shown extraordinary patience and magnanimity,” said India’s Permanent Representative P Harish, responding to what he said were Pakistan’s campaign of disinformation about New Delhi suspending the treaty.

“India has finally announced that the Treaty will be in abeyance until Pakistan, which is a global epicentre of terror, credibly and irrevocably ends its support for cross-border terrorism. It is clear that it is Pakistan which remains in violation of the Indus Water

Treaty and not India,” he said. After the massacre of 26 people by Pakistan-based terrorists last month, India said it was suspending the treaty reached in 1960 under the aegis of the World Bank to provide Pakistan a consistent share of the water from the Indus and its allied water resources.

Speaking at an informal meeting of the Security Council on protecting water in armed conflict, Harish outlined the problems that have arisen since the treaty was signed.

Russia, Ukraine conduct large-scale POW swap, each 390 people

Moscow, May 24 (IANS) Russia and Ukraine have conducted a major prisoner swap, exchanging 390 prisoners each under an agreement reached during recent talks in Istanbul, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

The defence ministry on Friday said 270 Russian servicemen and 120 civilians have returned from territory controlled by Kyiv.

In return, 270 Ukrainian prisoners and 120 civilians have also been released, it added.

The freed Russian prisoners are on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, where they are being provided with necessary psychological and medical assistance, reports Xinhua news agency, quoting the ministry."The large-scale exchange initiated

K’taka BJP stages ‘Kalaburagi Chalo’ protest, alleges hooliganism by Minister Priyank Kharge

Kalaburagi (Karnataka), May 24 (IANS) Karnataka BJP staged a massive protest in Kalaburagi on Saturday against Minister Priyank Kharge, alleging hooliganism against Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy.

Priyank Kharge is the son of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, and they hail from Kalaburagi district. The massive ‘Kalaburagi Chalo’ protest rally was organised by the BJP near the Deputy Commissioner’s office circle in Kalaburagi city. The protest was held under the leadership of BJP state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, and the party stated that it was organised to oppose Minister Priyank Kharge’s alleged misconduct, hooliganism, and unconstitutional behaviour.

Chalavadi Narayanaswamy had compared Minister Priyank Kharge to a “dog”, following which Kharge’s supporters allegedly surrounded and detained him for five hours, demanding an apology. The BJP delegation had met the Governor Thawarchand Gehlot and appealed for the sacking of Priyank Kharge from the state cabinet.

Addressing the gathering, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy stated, “If there’s any true Dalit, it’s me. I

have slept on mats, I’ve even slept on the bare ground. I’ve drunk water from ponds and lakes, and eaten whatever food was given to me. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth,” he charged, targeting Minister Priyank Kharge.

“Maybe AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge suffered hardships in the past, but now I am being denied my rightful place,” Narayanaswamy said.

“In Chittapur, when the incident took place, even though there were 300-400 police personnel, they didn’t send those people away who tried to attack me,” he criticised. “They staged a drama. Minister Priyank Kharge is the mastermind behind this conspiracy,” he charged.

He further alleged that the police were prepared to lathi-charge BJP workers and demanded that they should act in accordance with the Constitution. He warned them not to indulge in slavery or bootlicking.

“I am not a privileged Dalit. I don’t own property; I haven’t enjoyed power. I worked for the Congress for 40 years. In Gurmitkal constituency, Mallikarjun Kharge has won nine times — has even one Dalit leader emerged from there?” he asked.

“Wherever they (Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyank Kharge) walk, not even grass grows,” he mocked.

“It was I who carried you on my shoulders and made your name known everywhere,” he reminded Priyank Kharge.

Jharkhand court issues nonbailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi in defamation case

by the Russian side is planned to continue in the coming days," according to the ministry.

Ukraine and Russia reached a deal on the largest swap of their captives during a meeting in Turkey's Istanbul on May 16.

Following their direct negotiations in Istanbul last week, Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each, marking the largest prisoner swap since the start of the conflict in 2022.

Ranchi, May 24 (IANS) The MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, has issued a non-bailable warrant against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a 2018 defamation case.

The court has directed Rahul Gandhi to appear in person on June 26.

The case stems from alleged derogatory remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during a Congress party event in 2018, in which he

is accused of making disparaging comments about the then-BJP National President, Amit Shah. According to the complaint filed by Pratap Katiyar, a resident of Chaibasa, Gandhi had remarked that “no murderer can become the National President in Congress. Congressmen cannot accept a murderer as the National President, this is possible only in the BJP.”

The complainant viewed this as a defamatory statement directed at Amit Shah and lodged a complaint on July 9, 2018.

In April 2022, the Chaibasa court had initially issued a bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi after no response was received. However, when Gandhi failed to respond, the court escalated the matter and issued a non-bailable warrant in February 2024.

Gandhi’s legal team sought an exemption from personal appearance in the Chaibasa court, but the plea was rejected.

Renowned journalist latest victim of Pakistan’s ‘kill and dump’ policy in Balochistan

Quetta, May 24 (IANS) Abdul Latif Baloch, a prominent Baloch journalist, has become the latest victim of Pakistan's "kill and dump" policy in Balochistan after he was brutally shot dead in front of his wife and children inside his home in Mashkay, a tehsil of Awaran district in Balochistan province, by state-backed death squads, on Saturday.

Abdul Latif was more than a journalist in a war-torn region and was regarded as a voice for the oppressed, a documentor of Baloch suffering, resistance, and courage. In a land where speaking truth is punished with bullets, his reporting made him a target of a state that views journalism as

treason.

Experts reckon that his assassination is not an isolated incident and is part of Pakistan's ongoing "kill and dump" operation, a genocidal policy to erase Baloch identity and silence all who resist.

Just a few months ago, Abdul Latif's son, Saif Baloch, along with seven other family members, were forcibly disappeared by security forces and later killed — a horrifying indicator of how entire families are marked for elimination.

The wave of enforced disappearances and targetted shooting in Balochistan continues to intensify. In recent days, the killings of Younus Rasool and Sajid Baloch have once again revealed the terrifying scope of state violence across the region.

On May 17, Younus Rasool, son of Rasool Bakhsh and a resident of Malar Bangul Bazar in district Awaran, was forcibly disappeared in a midnight raid by Pakistani

military forces. During the operation, his family members were tortured, harassed, and threatened by Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and state-backed militias known locally as "death squads". His mutilated body was found the next day.

Earlier this week, another young man, Sajid Baloch, son of Nasir Baloch from Gushanag Kolwah, also in Awaran, was forcibly disappeared under similar circumstances. His mutilated and tortured body was later found dumped by the roadside, a grim signature of Pakistan’s "kill-anddump" strategy.

"These are not isolated incidents. The Pakistani state has embraced a hardline policy of suppression, operating with complete disregard for constitutional rights, due process, or human dignity. Under the pretense of security, Baloch lives are being systematically erased. The situation has reached a critical humanitarian tipping point," said a Baloch activist.

Experts urge strategic alignment of Africa’s development goals with multilateral trading system

Addis Ababa, May 24 (IANS)

Experts and policymakers have emphasised the need to ensure the strategic alignment between Africa's continental development targets and the multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organization (WTO). This came during the 11th African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL) Forum, held at the AU headquarters in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa from Thursday to Friday,

under the theme "International Law, WTO Reform, and Implementation of the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area)."

The forum brought together African officials in charge of trade, development, planning, and foreign affairs, senior officials of the AU, as well as legal experts and trade negotiators across the continent and beyond, reports Xinhua news agency.

They engaged in critical issues, including aligning the AfCFTA with global trade rules under the WTO, protecting African intellectual property and heritage in global markets, and enhancing the legitimacy and inclusivity of

WTO decision-making processes. Hajer Gueldich, legal counsel of the AU, stressed the urgent need to reshape Africa's common position in the reform of global trade governance. She emphasised the vital imperative of promoting an inclusive decision-making process in global trade governance, while also fostering continental and international cooperation to achieve an equitable global trade order. According to the AU, this year's edition of the forum comes at a "defining moment for Africa" as the AfCFTA enters its operational phase and WTO reform gains momentum on the international stage.

‘Pahalgam attack was done to create fear psychosis, destroy tourism and create religious discord’, says EAM Jaishankar in Berlin

Berlin, May 23 (IANS) Reiterating India's zero-tolerance for terrorism, India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has said that the Pahalgam terror attack was meant to create fear psychosis in the minds of people, destroy tourism economy flourishing in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as well as create a religious discord between communities living in the country.

EAM Jaishankar made the remarks while speaking at the DGAP's Centre for Geopolitics, Geoeconomics and technology.

He also added that no country in the world has approves of terrorism but rather condemned it.

The EAM said that Germany also condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and said that India only targeted terrorists headquarters and training centres emanating from its neighbouring country Pakistan and the latter has used terrorism as a state-sponsored policy to pressurise India.

Germany recognises India's right to defend itself against terrorism, EAM Jaishankar said.

India has zero tolerance for terrorism and will never give in to nuclear blackmail, he added on Friday after briefing Germany's top leadership on the new approach to combating crossborder terror backed by Pakistan.

‘Very bulky new neighbour’: Norwegian man wakes up to find container ship in garden

London, May 23 (IANS) A Norwegian man had a narrow escape as a huge container ship ran aground onto his garden, missing his bedroom where he was sleeping by scant metres, reports said on Friday.

The incident occurred in Byneset, near Trondheim city, and Johan Helberg was asleep throughout the arrival of his unexpected visitor - the 135-metre, Cypriotflagged cargo ship, the NCL Salten.

Helberg only woke to find the ship when his neighbour, who had witnessed the ship heading for the shore, rushed to his house to alert him, the BBC reported.

"The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don't like to open," Helberg told Norwegian television channel TV 2.

He said that he went to the window and "was quite astonished to see a big ship, adding that he had to bend his neck to see its top.

Five metres further south and it would have entered the bedroom, and "that wouldn't have been particularly pleasant", he said.

"I didn't hear anything," Helbe told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, adding that he was told that there had been a loud noise.

Helberg's neighbour, Jostein Jorgensen, said he was woken by the sound of the ship as it headed at full speed towards land - and Helberg's house.

"I was sure that he was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life. I rang the doorbell many times... it was only when I called him on the phone that I managed to contact him," Jorgensen told TV2.

Helberg said that the ship was "a very bulky new neighbour, but it will soon go away."

He said that he was "very excited" to see how the ship would be removed from his garden, adding that it would take a lot of effort. No one was injured in the incident.

The container vessel had 16 people on board and was travelling south-west through the Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when it went off course, the BBC reported.

It is not known what caused the crash, and Norwegian police are said to be investigating.

Bente Hetland, the Managing Director of NCL, which had chartered the ship, said it was a "serious incident" and "we are grateful that nobody was injured".

Broken suitcases and inedible food — Pakistani pilgrims abandoned to their fate in Mecca during Haj

EAM Jaishankar signalled there will be no room for third-party mediation in India's dealings with Pakistan while addressing a news conference with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul in Berlin.

He shared his remarks on how India and Germany can upgrade their ties as the two countries mark 25 years of their strategic partnership. He offered suggestions on collaboration in several areas to take the ties ahead.

He said, "To be here early in the tenure of this government, so that we really lose no time in forging a pathway towards taking after 25 years to look at the next 25 years and see where we can take our relationship."

Islamabad, March 29 (IANS) In yet another major embarrassment for Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, two prominent Members of National Assembly (MNA) on Thursday shared harrowing experiences of pilgrims from the country who are currently undertaking the annual Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Making statements in the National Assembly, Shagufta Jumani and Shahida Rehmani from the Pakistan People's Party exposed the claims being made by Sharif government of ensuring a smooth and seamless Haj pilgrimage for all Pakistanis. "The food being served to the Haj pilgrims from our country is inedible and same throughout the day. Which companies have been allotted these contracts and on whose recommendations? The people at the helm of affairs have completely destroyed the system.

I sincerely appeal to you in the name of God to have mercy on the Haj pilgrims," said Jumani. Rehmani too highlighted the gross official negligence, severely criticising the government machinery. "Seven people from my family are undertaking the pilgrimage this time. They are facing major health issues due to the food that is being served. The suitcases given to them broke at the airport, even before they began their journey to Mecca. Things are in such bad shape and there is nobody to take care of Pakistanis in Mecca. They have been put in faraway locations and there is nobody to look after them, " said Rehmani.

Last month, the Haj organisers had called on PM Sharif to ensure improved coordination with the Saudi authorities this time.

Saudi Arabia allocated Pakistan 179,210 Haj slots this year which was evenly divided between government and private schemes. However, only 14,000 private applications were successful, leaving thousands unable to complete their spiritual journey.

41 Australian lawmakers write to Yunus, urge ‘clear election roadmap’ in Bangladesh

Canberra, May 21 (IANS) In a significant development, a group of 41 Australian Senators and Members of Parliament on Wednesday wrote a letter to Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh's interim government, urging his administration to immediately and publicly announce a specific, time-bound electoral roadmap, stating it as an urgent and nonnegotiable step toward ensuring credible, transparent, and inclusive elections in the South Asian nation.

Additionally, the lawmakers also called for urgent action on ensuring justice for victims of the July uprising and disbanding the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) of Bangladesh.

Calling for an urgent announcement of a specific electoral roadmap, the letter

stated that Bangladesh's path to stability and democratic legitimacy hinges on a transparent and credible electoral process.

"To restore electoral integrity and ensure a peaceful democratic transition, we urge your government to: Announce a clear election roadmap for free, fair, and internationally monitored elections as soon as practically possible. The Australian Bangladeshi community has made it known to us that they expect and hope this will occur this calendar year," the Australian lawmakers stated in their letter.

"Use all available legislative and executive levers to produce a level playing field for all political parties, preventing undue influence or suppression. We look forward to Bangladesh embedding these changes, empowering your community, and taking its rightful place as a friend and partner of democracies around the world," they added.

The Australian politicians asserted that they have received multiple representations from

the Australian Bangladesh community requesting them to urge the interim government to hold those accountable and responsible for political crimes of violence through independent and transparent investigations and prosecutions.

"They have also asked for a process of truth, justice, and reparations to the victims and their families. We acknowledge the strength and humanity of these calls," the letter stated.

The letter called for an immediate disbandment of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), stating that repeated human rights reviews have highlighted RAB's involvement in severe human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture.

"We have noted with support the sanctions applied by the US government on the leadership of the RAB, and we have called on the Australian government to take similar action. Again we note the request from the Australian Bangladesh community for your administration to dismantle the RAB and provide justice for its victims," the letter further read.

2023 fatal army helicopter crash caused by pilot disorientation: Investigation

Canberra, May 21 (IANS) A 2023

Australian army helicopter crash that killed four soldiers was caused by the pilot becoming disoriented, an investigation has found.

The Department of Defence on Wednesday publicly released the aviation safety investigation report into the MRH-90 Taipan helicopter crash in July 2023. All four soldiers on board, including pilot Danniel Lyon and co-pilot Maxwell Nugent, were killed when the helicopter crashed into the ocean off Australia's east coast during a late-night defence

training exercise in July 2023.

The 228-page report found that the primary cause of the accident was Lyon suffering from an unrecognised loss of spatial orientation.

"This refers to a situation where a pilot is unaware of their actual orientation in relation to the earth's surface and the surrounding environment," the Department of Defence said in a statement. The helicopter with the callsign "Bushman 83" was third in a formation of four MRH90s that were conducting various manoeuvres during the exercise.

The report found that, after making a turn, Bushman 83 climbed 100 feet before rapidly descending and crashing into the ocean in a 21-second span. It said that Lyon "almost certainly"

lost sight of the aircraft ahead, Bushman 82, and tried to regain visual but likely did not know the helicopter was facing nose down and accelerated quickly, resulting in an "unrecoverable" rate of descent towards the water. During the descent, the investigation found that Lyon likely regained sight of Bushman 82 and took evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision, potentially saving lives, Xinhua news agency reported. The report found that the conditions at the time increased the risk of a person experiencing spatial disorientation and that Lyon and Nugent were likely suffering from fatigue as a result of disruptive work patterns, burnout and poor sleeping conditions during the training exercise.

Conservative opposition splits following historic election defeat

Canberra, May 20 (IANS)

Australia's conservative Coalition has split after the National Party announced it would not re-enter a partnership with the Liberal Party following a historic defeat at

the federal election.

David Littleproud, leader of the Nationals, on Tuesday said that the party has made the decision not to enter into a new Coalition agreement for the 48th parliament after a breakdown in negotiations with new Liberal leader Sussan Ley. It comes after the May 3 election for the 48th parliament, at which the governing centre-left Labor Party was re-elected in a historic landslide. "The National Party will sit alone on a principle

basis," Littleproud told reporters in Canberra. "On the basis of looking forward, not having to look back, and to try and actually regain important policy pieces that change the lives of the people we represent." It marks the first time since 1987 that the Coalition has split. Since re-forming after the 1987 election, the Coalition governed Australia between 1996 and 2007 and again from 2013 to 2022, with the urban-focused Liberal Party serving as the senior partner and the rural-focused National Party as the junior.

Canberra, May 28 (IANS)

Australia's two largest conservative political parties have reformed their partnership days after splitting for the first time since the 1980s.

The Liberal and National parties on Wednesday reached an agreement on a deal to reunite as a coalition and serve together as the opposition in the 48th federal parliament.

Addressing a press conference in Canberra, Liberal leader Sussan Ley said it would be a "great partnership going forward."

It comes eight days after Nationals leader David Littleproud announced that the party had voted not to enter a coalition partnership with the Liberals for the 48th parliament following the May 3 general election, which the governing center-left Labour Party won in a landslide. That marked the first time since 1987

that the two parties had split. The Nationals' decision to abandon the coalition came after negotiations between Littleproud and Ley on the terms of the partnership, which is renewed before each new term of parliament, broke down amid disagreements on four key policy issues.

Littleproud had demanded that a renewed coalition retain its election policies on building nuclear power plants, investing in regional Australia, divestiture powers for supermarkets, and improving mobile coverage in rural areas.

In the days following the split, the Liberals agreed in principle to the policy demands.

Littleproud said on Wednesday that negotiations between him and Ley in the last week "laid the boundaries" and that now is the time for the coalition to "take on" the government.

The coalition will hold at least 43 out of the 150 seats in the lower house of the federal parliament, with votes in one more seat where the Liberal candidate is ahead by a slim margin set to be recounted, Xinhua news agency reported.

Two teenagers charged over Melbourne shopping centre knife fight

Sydney, May 26 (IANS) Two teenagers have been charged over a brawl that forced a Melbourne shopping centre into lockdown on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the Northland shopping centre, 10 km northeast of central Melbourne, shortly after 2:30 pm on Sunday following reports of a fight between around 10 people, some of whom were armed with machetes, that triggered a lockdown.

Two people were arrested at the scene by police and a 20-year-old male was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police in the state of Victoria said on Monday that the people who were arrested, two males aged 15 and 16, have been charged with affray, intentionally causing injury, possessing a controlled weapon and using a controlled weapon.

Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan

on Monday announced that the state government would use extraordinary powers to totally ban the sale of machetes from Wednesday ahead of a legislated ban on machete possession coming into effect on September 1, Xinhua news agency reported. She said that the sale ban would "dry up" the supply of machetes as much as possible before the possession ban comes into effect. "I hate these knives, and I will keep introducing as many laws as it takes to get them off our streets, out of our shops and out of our lives," Allan said in a statement. Under the possession ban, a three-month amnesty period will begin in September allowing people to safely dispose of the knives without committing a crime.

Anyone caught in possession of a machete after September 1, except for those granted an exemption from the ban for allowed purposes such as agriculture, will face up to two years' imprisonment.

Victoria Police Superintendent Kelly Lawson told reporters on Sunday night that the shopping centre fight broke out after members of two "rival gangs" met up.

India at fourth: A giant leap with unfinished business

India’s climb to the fourth spot among the world’s largest economies, with a nominal GDP of $4.187 trillion, is more than just a milestone—it’s a powerful reflection of its longterm ambition, resilience, and untapped potential. Surpassing Japan, once Asia’s economic frontrunner, isn’t just symbolic; it marks a major shift in the global economic order. India is no longer a bystander in global decision-making—it’s stepping into the arena with influence.

This transformation has been over a decade in the making. In 2014, India was ranked tenth. The rise from tenth to fourth in just over a decade highlights the country’s accelerating economic pace. But behind the celebration lies a complex reality. Progress is evident, but so are the challenges that remain unresolved.

India’s growth has been driven by major structural reforms. The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) streamlined markets across states, while the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code helped clean up corporate finances and encouraged responsible lending. Schemes like the production-linked incentive (PLI) program brought in investments, boosting manufacturing and industrial growth. These efforts laid the foundation for long-term stability, even if results were not immediate.

External factors also worked in India’s favour. As global companies looked beyond China to diversify their supply chains, India’s large labor pool and growing consumer base made it an attractive destination. Digital tools like Aadhaar, UPI, and mobile internet expanded financial access and helped businesses scale. Even during the pandemic, India demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. Yet, there’s growing recognition that reaching the fourth position is only a step forward—not the finish line. Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the new pressure India faces to rise to third place. Germany is next, but the journey will demand even greater effort and deeper reforms.

Significant hurdles remain. India’s investment in research and development is less than 1% of its GDP, far too low for a country aiming to lead in technology and innovation. The talent is there, but the support ecosystem—venture funding, regulatory ease, and risk-taking culture—needs strengthening. Bureaucratic delays and regional disparities continue to

limit potential.

Another pressing concern is workforce participation, especially among women. Despite rapid digital growth and a booming service sector, job creation hasn't kept pace with population growth. Many young people remain underemployed, especially in rural areas, often working informally without social protections. Growth must be inclusive or it risks leaving millions behind, breeding frustration instead of national pride.

Productivity also remains a weak link. While India’s economic growth is projected at 6.2% in 2025, productivity per worker lags behind global peers. This stems from outdated agricultural practices, insufficient vocational training, and unequal access to modern technology. Bridging the digital divide and upgrading skills are crucial for sustained efficiency.

India’s economic journey is also unfolding in a shifting geopolitical landscape. Western nations increasingly view India as a strategic counterbalance to China, offering partnerships and investments. But with this support come greater responsibilities. India is expected to step up on global issues—from climate change and international trade to regional security and governance. Whether it can take on these roles remains an open question.

Outpacing Japan economically is a meaningful achievement. Japan remains a tech-savvy, high-income nation, but its aging population and economic stagnation have slowed its pace. India, in contrast, has a youthful demographic advantage. But this can only become a strength if matched with strong health, education, and job opportunities. A large young population is an asset only when empowered.

Public expectations are rising too. Indians are proud of this achievement, but also demand better governance, quality infrastructure, healthcare, education, and smoother government services. Economic progress must be visible in daily life, not just in data.

India must also frame its journey not merely as a race up the rankings but as a mission to improve lives, reduce inequality, and address sustainability. As the fourth-largest economy, India’s environmental policies will affect the planet. Climate responsibility cannot be postponed.

Bridging now to next: A critical call for Australia’s moral reckoning

As National Reconciliation Week 2025 unfolds across Australia under the powerful theme “Bridging Now to Next”, we are reminded not only of our shared history but also of the work that remains unfinished. This theme isn’t merely a poetic phrase to be printed on posters or splashed across social media feeds—it is a summons to confront the truths that have long been buried beneath the surface of national consciousness. It calls for a deliberate crossing: from performative gestures to meaningful structural change, from symbolic acknowledgments to justice grounded in reality. Reconciliation in Australia has always been complex terrain. This year, the message is louder and more insistent. It’s not enough to pay homage to the milestones of the past—the 1967 Referendum, where Indigenous Australians were finally counted in the census, or the 1992 Mabo decision that legally dismantled the myth of terra nullius. These were crucial steps forward, but they now risk being romanticized unless they are viewed as starting points, not endpoints. The nation cannot continue to commemorate these events while neglecting the deeper reckoning they demand. Truth-telling is central to this year’s focus. But truth, by its nature, is uncomfortable. It challenges national myths and calls into question long-held notions of identity and progress. It demands that Australia revisit its foundation stories—not with nostalgia but with critical eyes. The dispossession of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples wasn’t an unfortunate side effect of colonization; it was a deliberate policy. The echoes of this truth are still felt today in every system where Indigenous Australians are overrepresented—in prisons, in hospitals, in poverty statistics, and tragically, in premature death rates.

The call for structural change this year cannot be mistaken for a metaphor. It is a literal demand. One of the starkest examples is the continued incarceration of Indigenous children as young as 10. Amnesty International’s push to raise the minimum age

of criminal responsibility to 14 is not radical—it is humane. It reflects international standards and scientific consensus on childhood development. To imprison a child is to admit moral failure. To disproportionately imprison Indigenous children is to perpetuate a legacy of control and violence. The fact that this is still up for debate in 2025 is an indictment of national priorities. The structural inequalities don’t end there. Justice reinvestment—diverting funds from incarceration to community-led initiatives—offers not just a smarter approach to justice, but a more ethical one. When Indigenous communities design and lead these programs, they reflect lived experience and cultural understanding. These are not abstract policy suggestions; they are tangible steps that could drastically reduce recidivism, improve lives, and offer dignity where the system has long denied it.

Beyond policy, this week is also about cultural engagement. Across the country, Australians are participating in events— watching films, attending performances, engaging in discussions. These are not passive activities; they are invitations to see the world through different eyes. When people gather to watch a story told from an Indigenous perspective, they are challenged to confront their own assumptions. When they listen to elders speak, they encounter histories rarely taught in schools. Education in this context is not academic—it is transformative. It equips Australians with the awareness to question systems they once accepted without thought.

This transformation is vividly symbolized in Bree Buttenshaw’s artwork for the week. The native plants regenerating after fire serve as more than an aesthetic image—they are a metaphor for resilience, yes, but also for responsibility. Fire may destroy, but it also clears the way for renewal. And that is what reconciliation must become—a process that clears away denial, guilt, and silence, and replaces them with commitment, accountability, and action.

Yet there remains a danger that this week, like many others before it, will be consumed in tokenism. Posters will be hung, corporate logos will turn Indigenous for seven days, and land acknowledgments will be spoken with the same mechanical cadence they always are. But without movement—without action—these gestures mean little. Reconciliation is not a theme to be celebrated once a year; it is a direction, a path. And we must walk it daily.

The theme “Bridging Now to Next” hints at a future not yet realized. The “now” is marked by fatigue, by disappointment over the failed Voice to Parliament referendum, by ongoing resistance to real change. But the “next” is still ours to define. It could be a future where Indigenous children are nurtured, not criminalized. Where their languages are revived, not erased. Where Indigenous knowledge shapes environmental and social policy, and where Indigenous people have control over decisions that affect their lives. That future is not inevitable. It will not arrive on its own. It depends on what we do now. If Australians leave this week feeling merely informed rather than inspired to act, then we will have missed the moment. If we continue to speak about reconciliation in polite tones while ignoring the rage, grief, and resistance of Indigenous voices, we are only reinforcing the very divisions we claim to be bridging. One of the most overlooked aspects of this week is its emotional weight. For many non-Indigenous Australians, reconciliation week is educational. For Indigenous Australians, it is often exhausting. The burden to educate, to forgive, to explain one’s pain again and again, is a heavy one. It is not their responsibility alone to carry this load. True solidarity means stepping up—not stepping back and applauding others from a safe distance.

The pathway to reconciliation is not paved in consensus. It will require disagreement, discomfort, and disruption. But it also offers the promise of a different kind of national identity—one built not on denial, but on truth; not on superiority, but on respect. It is not about guilt—it is about growth. And that is a challenge that belongs to all of us. This week should not be remembered as a cultural calendar event. It should be remembered as a turning point— if we are brave enough to treat it as such. Bridging Now to Next is not a slogan; it is a decision. And Australia, collectively, must decide what kind of nation it wants to be.

Growing risks of Erdogan’s Turkey openly backing ‘rogue state’ Pakistan

New Delhi: Turkey and Pakistan pledged several joint ventures and enhanced bilateral investment, including in key sectors like renewable energy, information technology, defence production, infrastructure development and agriculture, before Shehbaz Sharif left Istanbul for Tehran, earlier on Monday.

The Pakistani Prime Minister had arrived in the country on Sunday as he kicked off his four-nation tour that also included visits to Iran, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan.

As Ankara openly expressed solidarity with Islamabad in the military standoff with India earlier this month, Sharif met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the second time in one month. The two leaders had last met on April 22, the day when the barbaric Pahalgam attack took place, resulting in the death of 26

innocent civilians. Erdogan had also paid a State Visit to Pakistan in February 2025.

Erdogan reportedly told Sharif it was in the interest of Turkey and Pakistan to increase solidarity in education, intelligence sharing and technological support in the fight against "terrorism". Sharif, during his meeting with Erdogan, was also accompanied by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir and Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

Analysts reckon that the meeting between the two leaders only strengthened their anti-India stand as Ankara has become the second largest arms supplier to Islamabad.

Pakistan had earlier this month targetted Indian civilian, military and religious sites by using Turkey's Asisguard Songar drones

that were neutralised by India's strong air defences.

Earlier, six Turkish C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft, possibly carrying an arms shipment, landed at Karachi airport on April 27 and on May 2 while a Turkish warship, TCG Buyukada (F-512), the second ship of the Ada-class ASW corvettes of the Turkish Navy, also docked at Karachi.

Turkey's military support to Pakistan not only reveals the true nature of their partnership, but also their transnational alliance against India.

Turkey under Erdogan is also trying to position itself as a Muslim world leader, using Islamic identity to counter Western influence, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Pakistan has often aligned with Turkey's narratives, including on Islamophobia, to resonate with global Muslim population.

Ankara supports Islamabad in several ways: endorsing its stance on Kashmir, pushing anti-India narratives and using diplomatic channels and state tools, including its media, to fuel global boycott campaigns against India. Turkish news outlets continue to amplify fake news after every Pakistan-backed terror attack on India, from Uri to Pulwama and now Pahalgam. They were also quick to echo Pakistan's narrative

after India revoked Articles 370.

Both countries together also weaponised the OIC to amplify anti-India narratives in 2020 citing CAA/NRC and Kashmir to push claims of 'Islamophobia.'

"Raising the Kashmir issue in collaboration with Pakistan's ISI benefits a desperate Erdogan who wants to become the undisputed 'Caliph' of the Muslim Ummah and even achieve its main aim of getting hold of the nuclear weapon technology. The Turkish support to Pakistan's campaign against India on Kashmir also enhances Erdogan's position amongst the Pakistani Punjabi Muslims, the population he is banking on to claim the leadership of the Islamic world," said a top official.

He revealed that Turkey-backed transnational institutions are working 24×7 to destroy the integrity and secular fabric of Indian polity. The Diyanet or DIB, Turkey's powerful Presidency of Religious Affairs, has witnessed exponential growth in both influence and budget.

At the same time, Islamist foundations linked to Erdogan have been spreading fake narrative, targetting youth with propaganda in a tone reminiscent of jihadist rhetoric.

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS), founded by Foundation for Education

Development Sarajevo (SEDEF) in 2003, is led by Sevgi Kurtulmus, wife of Numan Kurtulmus, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey and currently the 30th Speaker of Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

The Turkey Youth Foundation (TUGVA), a government-funded organisation, has been at the forefront of this propagandistic campaign. Its Chairman, Ibrahim Beşinci, is frequently included in the state delegations on President Erdogan's official overseas visits.

"India had aided Turkey in its darkest hour with relief and rescue 'Operation Dost' in February 2023 but Turkey continues to support Pakistan, a terror-exporting state, by supplying arms aimed at India. More dangerously, Erdogan's dangerous ambitions could destabilise regions globally," reckons another expert.

No doubt, Pakistan, a serial sponsor of terror activities, is finding a safe and warm home in Ankara.

Intense political unrest grips Bangladesh as Yunus’s future hangs by a thread

New Delhi: Lack of a clear roadmap for reforms and holding elections continues to fuel a major political unrest in Bangladesh as Muhammad Yunus, who heads the interim government in the country, held a series of meetings over the weekend with leaders of various political parties who have been questioning his controversial policies and dubious advisors.

On Saturday, Yunus held meetings with delegations from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-eIslami (JeI) and National Citizens Party (NCP).

tomorrow, then Yunus will be on his way out within 24 hours," said Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.

Last week, Bangladesh's Chief of Army Staff General Wakeruz-Zaman had unambiguously stated at a high-level gathering of officers in Dhaka Cantonment that the country badly needs political stability which is only possible through an elected government and "not by unelected decision-makers".

government created a deadlock in revenue collection by imposing reforms on the National Board of Revenue (NBR) ahead of passing the national budget.

Experts reckon that Yunus, despite being an economist, has failed to understand that Bangladesh is fast losing investors and the continued uncertainty will erode the very foundations that made the country attractive for global businesses.

In a similar move, Yunus on Sunday met leaders of 20 political parties in two phases. Representatives of 11 parties met him in the first phase and another nine political parties were locked in discussions with him till late evening.

Zaman had also shut down the Yunus government's proposed 'Humanitarian Corridor' to Myanmar's Rakhine State, terming it as a "bloody corridor" which is a threat to national sovereignty.

Political discord over when to hold elections and growing tensions with political parties were the key issues discussed.

Addressing an event virtually from London, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday highlighted that domestic and foreign investment has become stagnant because of the absence of a stable democratic government in the country. He mentioned that his party expects to see a free and fair national election in the country by December, this year.

Meanwhile, another BNP leader warned Yunus on delaying General Elections from December 2025 to June 2026.

"If we take to the streets

"The Bangladesh Army will never be involved in any activity that is harmful to sovereignty. Nor will anyone be allowed to do so. National interest must come first in any action. Whatever is done must be guided by political consensus," Zaman reportedly told fellow officers.

Events over the last few months have also created a sense of unease in the country over the ongoing uncertain political and economic situation. People have taken to the streets, holding large protest rallies almost everyday but the Yunus-led government is in no mood to listen to their demands at the moment. Moreover, the interim

The policy paralysis to resolve the difficult equation is not just in economics, but also in soft infrastructure, thus increasingly jeopardizing investor faith.

The flow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Bangladesh fell to USD $104.33 million in the July-September quarter of fiscal year 2024-25, the lowest in at least six years.

Bangladesh received 71 per cent less foreign investment yearon-year, down from USD $360.5 million in the July-September period of FY24, as both the flow of net equity and reinvested earnings declined, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bank (BB), earlier this year.

The businesses have been suffering from a slowdown owing to a host of reasons: high inflation, import restrictions, dollar shortages, political uncertainty, and volatile law and order situation.

Furthermore, it is clear that there is a lack of alignment and coordination among key government institutions such as the Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue, and even among various ministries. Separately, violent protests have now become a daily affair in Bangladesh while the radical Islamist parties continue to take aggressive actions against minority communities, especially Hindus. The riotous street mobs of political activists mixed with radical Islamists have also begun attacking Army personnel and rendered the police largely ineffective in Bangladesh.

Another growing concern for many Bangladeshis is the visible participation and growing influence of extremist Islamist factions whose ideological commitments extend beyond democratic contestation.

No doubt, fingerprints of Pakistan's ISI are distinctive in the ongoing radicalisation of Bangladesh, which also directly threatens India's northeastern states.

AIB seminar to spotlight Australia–India synergies in trade, agriculture & education

Brisbane, May 21 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

Australia India Business (AIB) is set to host an insightful seminar titled "Exploring Economic Synergies" on July 10, 2025, at 66 on Ernest in South Brisbane. The half-day event, running from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm, will focus on strengthening collaboration between Australia and India in key sectors including agriculture, trade skills, and education.

The seminar comes at a time of accelerated growth in bilateral economic ties, largely propelled by the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) and a rapidly increasing Indianorigin population in Australia. These dynamics are creating new and timely opportunities for deepening business relations and knowledge exchange.

According to Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs

and Trade (DFAT), the ECTA has facilitated significant advantages such as:

Recognition of professional qualifications between the two nations, preferential access for Australian service providers to Indian markets, especially in education, healthcare, business services, and banking, tariff eliminations on various Australian exports like sheep meat, wool, and seafood, with further

reductions expected on barley, oats, lentils, nuts, fresh produce, and wine.

In agriculture, mutual cooperation could lead to sustainable practices, efficient supply chains, and food security improvements. Technological innovation, particularly in precision farming and bioengineering, offers vast potential. Knowledge-sharing in water management and irrigation could also greatly benefit productivity in both countries.

Furthermore, the agreement paves the way for skilled Indian tradespeople to contribute to Australian infrastructure projects, while creating pathways for training programs and skill

exchanges in industries like construction and manufacturing. AIB, which has a longstanding history of supporting Australia–India business development, is leveraging this momentum by bringing together stakeholders, industry experts, and entrepreneurs to explore how businesses can best take advantage of this changing landscape.

Tickets for the July 10 seminar are available via Humanitix at https:// events.humanitix.com/exploringeconomic-synergies.

Australia India Business Pty Ltd was founded in Sydney to enhance bilateral trade and help achieve tangible B2B commercial outcomes.

FICQ hosts domestic violence workshop to raise awareness

Brisbane, May 31 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

The Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland (FICQ) recently held a wellattended workshop in Brisbane, focused on raising awareness about domestic violence (DV) and encouraging community engagement in prevention and support.

The event featured three distinguished speakers who addressed the complex

dynamics of domestic violence from different professional perspectives. Attendees heard about the psychological and legal consequences of DV, preventative approaches, and ways communities can support survivors on their journey to recovery.

Girija Dadhe, Manager at the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre (DVPC), highlighted how cultural traditions and expectations can sometimes

obscure signs of abuse, making it even more important to educate and empower communities to recognise and respond effectively.

Pravinita Singh-Pillay, a lawyer and principal at Corner Stone, shared valuable legal insights, outlining the rights of DV victims and offering practical steps for seeking safety and justice.

Akhilesh Jain, a University of Queensland master’s student working with children affected by DV, provided a heartfelt

In a Facebook post following the event, FICQ expressed its appreciation, stating: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our inspiring speakers... Their knowledge and compassion helped shed light on this urgent issue.”

The workshop underscored the

importance of community action in tackling domestic violence. Simple acts—such as listening without judgment, offering support, and alerting authorities when needed—can make a lifechanging difference.

Gill has a very stable head on his shoulders, will handle captaincy very well, says Gurkeerat

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS)

Shubman Gill’s stature within India’s leadership group has risen meteorically over the last 12 months. Last July, following his first full-time stint as the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Gill captained India to a 4-1 victory in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The unexpected elevation of Gill to the vice-captaincy for the Sri Lanka tour was followed by retaining that role for the home series against England and ultimately in the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph. Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longer format this month, Gill emerged as the primary frontrunner for the Test captaincy. The appointment received

Govt

official confirmation when chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced him as India’s 37th Test captain on Saturday. Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Gill’s mentor, friend, and former teammate from their Ranji Trophy days with Punjab, believes Gill’s appointment as India’s Test captain is a ‘very big thing’.

“When you see ahead of such a big tour, a young captain like him is appointed to the role, then it shows they have faith in Shubman and confidence in his leadership abilities. That is why they have given such a huge responsibility on the young shoulders of somebody like Shubman. The Indian team think-tank also believes that he can do that.”

“As much as I know of Shubman, he has got a very stable head on his shoulders and will handle these captaincy things very well. We are all very happy. The hard work that he has put in for so many years, the persistence with which he has worked, the setbacks he has faced, all of that is being rewarded. I really hope that he will do well for India in this

new role,” said Gurkeerat in an exclusive conversation with IANS on Saturday.

While Gurkeerat knew the Test captaincy rumours were intensifying, neither he nor Gill broached the subject in their conversations. Having played alongside Gill in the Gujarat Titans IPL 2022 winning team, Gurkeerat noted how the righthanded batter seemed driven to make a statement in the ongoing season.

“He wasn’t that focused on Test captaincy talks happening, as at this point in time, his focus is on the current IPL campaign because that is also a very important tournament right now. Now, when I see him leading GT, I thought he had a point to prove in this IPL.”

“Everyone dreams of becoming the India captain, and right now he is leading Gujarat very well. Hopefully, he will do well in the rest of the tournament as well, because the results are right now in front of everyone to see,” he added.

to stage Khelo India Northeast Games every year to harness region’s potential

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS)

Identifying the Northeast as a powerhouse of sports talent, the Central Government, through the Sports Ministry, will start massive talent identification and promotion schemes, including organising annual multidiscipline sports competitions to help strengthen the sports ecosystem of the region.

Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday said that the central government is fully committed to strengthening the sports ecosystem in the region through multiple initiatives, including hosting Khelo India Northeast Games in one of the 8 Northeast states every year. These states include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

The Union Sports Minister announced this while addressing a large gathering during the Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on

Saturday.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said people knew Northeast as the region of India’s first sunrise but in the 10 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, the Northeast is taking strong strides towards development. He said that Northeast is continuously contributing towards the development of ‘Naya Bharat’. With the target of hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Summer Olympics in 2036, the Sports Minister said that a country as vast as India is a perfect place for organising international competitions throughout the year.

IPL 2025: One more game and let’s celebrate together, says Patidar after RCB reach final

New Chandigarh, May 29 (IANS) After Royal Challengers Bengaluru entered their fourth final in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with an eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 of the 2025 edition, skipper Rajat Patidar said it’s just a matter of one more game in the competition and then they will celebrate the triumph together with the franchise’s die-hard fans.

At the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, three-fers from Suyash Sharma and Josh Hazlewood helped RCB bowl out PBKS for 101 in 14.1 overs. An unbeaten 56 from Phil Salt would RCB chase down the target in exactly ten overs and book their spot in the title clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium on June 3.

“We have had a lot of practice sessions throughout the tournament, so one day of not practising won't harm you. I always thank RCB fans, not only in Chinnaswamy, but wherever we go, we feel it's our home ground. We love you, so keep supporting us. One more game and let's celebrate together,” said Patidar

Neeraj Chopra bags silver in Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet in Poland

Chorzów (Poland), May 23 (IANS) India’s two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra secured a second-place finish in the javelin throw at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet in Chorzów, Poland, on Friday. Though Neeraj won his third medal of the season, he could not quite replicate his seasonbest performance from the Doha Diamond League, which had also bagged him a silver medal. Battling wet conditions at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet in Chorzów, Chopra, considered India's greatest-ever athlete, struggled for his rhythm but did enough to continue his successful run in the season.

With a below-par effort of 84.14m on his sixth and final attempt, Chopra, who hails from Haryana and is employed with the Indian Army, edged past Grenada’s twotime world champion Anderson Peters, who managed a best of 83.24m.

The 27-year-old Chopra, who hurled the spear past the

90m mark for the first time in Doha last week, had started his campaign at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial with a foul and then followed it up with 81.20m and then made a deliberate four on his next attempt. Chopra, the golden boy of Indian athletics, intentionally overstepped on his next turn and threw 81.80m with his fifth throw before achieving his best distance of the day in his final attempt. Germany’s Julian Weber continued his strong form and once again got the better of Chopra, clinching top honours with a winning throw of 86.12m. Weber had hurled the javelin to 91.06m in Doha to win the gold medal, which was also the first time he went past the 90 m mark in his career

The silver in Poland is the third medal for the season for Neeraj Chopra, who made history by bagging a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and followed it up with a silver medal in Paris 2024.

Chopra started his season by winning the Potch Invitational Meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, with an 84.52m throw in April before bettering his own personal best and the national record to 90.23m at the Doha Diamond League last week.

Series against England is going to be an exciting one, we’re ready for any challenge: Shubman Gill

in the post-match presentation ceremony.

He then lavished rich praise on Suyash’s ability to bamboozle the PBKS batters in the middle overs.

“I think we were clear in our plans on how we have to bowl. I think the fast bowlers used the surface really well. The way Suyash chipped in, the way he bowled his lines and lengths, that was really good.”

“As a captain, I am clear about his bowling. He has to target the stumps; that's his strength. His wrong 'un is difficult to read for the batters. I always want to give him clear ideas, I don't want to confuse him. I am okay if he concedes a few runs (in the process).”

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Newly appointed India Test captain Shubman Gill said that the upcoming five-Test series against England is going to be an exciting one and the team is ready for any challenge that comes ahead of the tour starting on June 20.

Gill has taken over as India's captain at a time when senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin have retired from Test cricket. India's touring party will be young, and many of the squad members will be travelling to England for the first time.

"It is definitely a bit overwhelming. As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India and not just play for India, play Test cricket for a very long time," Gill said in an interview posted on

BCCI's website.

“To be able to get this opportunity is a great honour, and it's a big responsibility. I'm looking forward to this exciting opportunity, and the upcoming series against England is going to be an exciting one.”

Reflecting on his thoughts on how he will lead the side, Gill hinted that he will be the players' captain who will back his teammates.

“I believe in leading by example, not just by performance, but I think off the field by discipline and hard work. As a captain, a leader should be able to know when to step in and also when to give space to the players," the opening batter said.

“A good leader should always be able to know what makes their players able to have the best performance or the best outcome.

“That is always exciting to people to have those conversations with the players, to be able to know them on a deeper level than just cricket, you know, because then you're really able to know what can get the best out of them," he added. The 25-year-old said he will use his approach as a batter while making decisions on the field. “One of the things that I learned was if I'm a batsman, I'm batting out there, I want to be able to make decisions as a batsman and not as a captain.

‘Trikal’ brand controversy: MP Minister demands action against proprietors

Bhopal, May 26 (IANS) Amid escalating controversy over a liquor brand ‘Trikal’, senior Madhya Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Lakhan Patel said that this title has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community, and demanded strict action against the proprietors.

Patel said that the word 'Trikal' is related to the Sanatan Dharma, and it is used for Lord Shiva. He stated that using such a title

for the liquor brand could be a conspiracy against Sanatan Dharma, which won't be tolerated.

"Although this brand is not from Madhya Pradesh but Lord Shiva is universal. Wherever this brand was launched, the state government should take prompt action against its proprietors," Patel told IANS.

This new whisky brand was launched by a homegrown liquor company - Radico Khaitan; however, its title ‘Trikal’ drew a mega controversy, for hurting religious sentiments. The whisky is priced between Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,500, and debuts in key markets including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Maharashtra, with plans for a wider national and global rollout in the coming months.

Radico’s Managing Director had positioned its launch as

a milestone in the company’s premiumisation journey. However, religious gurus, Sanatan Dharam organisations and politicians on Monday lashed out at the company for naming its product as ‘Trikal’, and demanding immediate withdrawal of the product. The whisky bottle with a teal label also carries a line-drawn figure of a face with closed eyes and a circle on the forehead – allegedly similar to Lord Shiva’s third eye.

Mahant Raju Das Maharaj of Ayodhya Dham said, "I appeal to the owners of Radico Khaitan, please understand, recognise and respect Sanatan Dharma. India is a country rooted in Sanatan culture, where every particle reflects its vastness. Every individual holds deep faith, devotion and reverence for Sanatan."

Odisha: SJTA to apply for patent on glossary linked to Puri Jagannath Temple

Bhubaneswar, May 27 (IANS) The Jagannath Temple at Puri will soon apply for a patent on the glossary linked to the famous 12th century shrine and deities and the and logo of the temple.

in Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and digital literacy.

"The aim of YASHODA AI (Your AI Sakhi for Shaping Horizons with Digital Awareness) is to reach every corner of the country and make women technically proficient. In the first phase, the commission aims to benefit more than 2 lakh women," said a statement from the NCW.

The pan-India campaign will run through schools and colleges and seek to educate and empower women from wide-ranging sections, including Self Help Group (SHG) members, ASHA workers, teachers, government employees and panchayat representatives by providing training in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Srimandir Managing Committee held in the sacred coastal town on Monday under the chairmanship of Puri King Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb. The committee took the decision in the wake of the controversy surrounding the naming the newly constructed Jagannath Temple at Digha in West Bengal as ‘Jagannath Dham’.

Informing media persons about the decision, the chief administrator of Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), Arabinda Padhi on Monday said: "We will apply for a patent on the set of words attached to Lord Jagannath such as Srimandir, Shree Jagannatha Dham, Mahaprasad, Purusottam Dham, Shreekhetra, the Logo of Jagannatha temple etc. This is a very important decision which

was approved by the management committee in the meeting.”

The Puri King also told media persons that the referring Digha temple as ‘Jagannath Dham’ is an insult to and against the tradition and culture of Jagannath. He said there are numerous Jagannath temples located across the globe but none has been referred to as ‘Dham’, except the Puri temple.

"We request the state government to hold discussions with the West Bengal counterpart and ensure that Digha Temple should not be designated as ‘Dham’. The state government also possesses all relevant facts and references in this regard," said the Puri King.

Taking a dig at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) which is also in the Digha Jagannath Temple trust constituted by the West Bengal government, Deb questioned as to why the religious body didn't raise its voice against designating Digha Temple as ‘Jagannath Dham’ as they are aware that Puri is the only place designated as Jagannath Dham.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has written a letter to his West Bengal counterpart, Mamata Banerjee requesting her government to stop naming Digha Temple as Jagannath Dham as it exclusively refers to the 12th century shrine at Puri and its usage for any other temple is inappropriate.

Uttarakhand: Divyang Jeevan Joshi creates artwork on pine bark, PM Modi salutes his spirit

Dehradun, May 25 (IANS)

People consider pine bark to be useless, but Jeevan Chandra Joshi, a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand, is bringing life to wood with his artwork. Without any modern tools, he has carved many life-like figures on the bark with his hands, and people are also amazed to see his creations. He has made many artefacts on this bark, including a replica of pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath, traditional drums, musical instruments, conch, Shivling, map of India, etc.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on Sunday, mentioned the unique wooden artwork of polio-stricken

Jeevan Joshi and also praised him.

Jeevan Joshi was exhilarated and proud to know that PM Modi praised his artwork publicly.

The 65-year-old Jeevan Chandra Joshi, a resident of Katgharia, never let his physical disability affect his art. Today, he is an expert in an art that is being appreciated not only in the country but also abroad. He is the first person to be awarded the Senior Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture for working on pine baguette, i.e. the dried bark of the pine tree. This achievement not only recognises his art but also sets an example that there is no substitute for hard work and dedication.

Joshi is suffering from polio. He has had difficulty walking since childhood, but due to his highflying spirit, he has become selfreliant and has now become an inspiration for others. He learned the art related to wood and bark from his father.

The compulsion of not being able to go out of the house forced him to discover a different world within the house. This journey made him a master craftsman. He told IANS that he has been practising this art for 25 to 30 years. He not only adopted this art himself but has now started training some local children in this art as well.

He believes that if the government promotes this art, migration from the mountains will stop and local people will get employment. He says that the path to selfemployment lies in such arts, and there is a need to preserve and promote them.

Meanwhile, local social worker Narendra Sharma said, "Artists like Jeevan Chandra Joshi are our heritage. The government should provide a platform to such people so that their art reaches the new generation. Their story is not just an inspiration, it is a story of change."

Rejected by in-laws, supported by ‘Jeevika’: Begusarai’s Neelu turns adversity into success

New Delhi, May 18 (IANS)

The Modi government’s slew of schemes for women empowerment, and the firm resolve of womenfolk in general, are scripting a new success story for India, thereby inviting global attention.

The latest instance of this change is Bihar’s Begusarai district, where Jeevika Yojana is changing the lives of women by enabling them to overcome adversities and become self-dependent.

Pachamba, a locality about 5 km away from Begusarai, has become a big centre of empowerment of the 'Jeevika Didi' yojana, with

Neelu Kumari emerging as the face of this success.

However, Neelu’s journey was not easy. She was beset with one of the biggest challenges after her marriage, and this is what laid the foundation for her inspirational journey.

Her husband was an alcoholic, and her in-laws kept harassing her, following which she returned to her maternal home. But now, with Jeevika's sewing house, she has not only become self-reliant but has moved up the ladder of success.

Neelu Kumari told IANS that she got married to Chandan Kumar Sharma, a resident of Asha toll village in Bhagalpur district, in 2010, and the groom’s side duped their family by telling lies.

“At the time of marriage, Chandan Sharma's family members told me that the groom works in a tower

installation company. But, after marriage, I got to know that he didn’t work and also he was an alcohol addict,” she said.

She was not only beaten and abused by her husband but also tortured by the in-laws for not bearing a son after marriage. Her in-laws also did not send her two daughters to school for studies, and neither did they give them proper food.

Troubled by her in-laws, Neelu chose a different path and joined 'Muskaan Jeevika'.

Today, Neelu is an active member of the Jeevika programme and is doing sewing and embroidery work, thereby shaping the future of her daughters.

Neelu Kumari said that before joining Jeevika, she had to face financial difficulties, but today she is standing on her own feet.

National awardwinning pink enamel artisan Kunj Bihari Singh, based in Varanasi’s Visheshwarganj area, has crafted an exquisite replica of

The model, adorned with silver and gold accents, is capturing national attention and stoking patriotic fervour.

Bihar’s Tara Devi is shining example of Jeevika scheme’s success

Patna, May 21 (IANS) Tara Devi’s transformational journey from being utterly deprived to a self-sustaining family is a living testament of what a woman’s grit, determination can achieve if combined with persistence and resilience.

Tara Devi, a resident of Bihar’s Jamui district, lost her husband at a young age, but that didn’t break her courage, rather, she got emboldened to take on the difficult terrains of life, and eventually she turned successful in steering her and her family’s life.

After she lost her husband, Mukesh Singh, in a road accident in 2022, she took a loan under the Jeevika Yojana and started her own enterprise.

Today, Tara Devi is running her family on her own and has become a role model for her native village – Bhajor. She took a loan of Rs 30,000 under Jeevika Yojana and started Poshan Vatika and NPM (NonPesticide Management) shop.

Today, she sells goods worth Rs 4000 on a daily basis, earning about Rs 600. With this income, she has continued the education of her three daughters.

The elder daughter is studying in the Intermediate, for whom she wants to pursue the GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) course, because her husband was a compounder, and Tara Devi wants her daughter to follow the same path.

The second daughter is in the 9th grade and dreams of becoming a teacher. The third daughter is currently studying in the 4th grade.

Tara Devi's story is an inspiration for all those women who have the passion to become self-reliant even in adverse circumstances.

Speaking to IANS, Tara Devi thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for launching such public welfare schemes.

Notably, Jeevika is a communitybased organisation in Bihar, having around 10 lakh women self-help groups, thereby uniting approximately 1.24 crore women for Swachhata Hi Seva in Bihar. With women joining hands to reach out to villages for awareness generation and undertaking mass cleanliness activities, this marks a true reflection of ‘Nari Shakti’.

inspired by the courage of India’s armed forces, chose to honour their valour in his own artisan language: enamel, metal, and fire. Speaking to IANS, Kunj Bihari Singh said: "After the Pahalgam attack, our brave soldiers gave a befitting reply. I wanted to pay tribute to their courage through my art. The BrahMos missile represents India's strength and technological edge. Making this replica is my salute to our jawans." Crafted with silver and adorned with traditional pink enamelling - a technique deeply rooted in Varanasi's artistic heritage, the BrahMos model has struck a chord with collectors and patriots alike.

Two brothers in Bihar’s Motihari district have emerged as role models in their vicinity for starting and running a smallscale enterprise successfully. They started a Kurkure factory, taking help from PMFME and today, they are earning money as well as creating employment. PMFME scheme supports and facilitates the aspiring youth in starting their small-scale enterprise, and also helps them tap the potential of local youth and co-operatives.

Vijay and Sanjay Jaiswal, two youths from Motihari, obtained a loan and subsidy under the scheme, and today they are shaping not only their future but also that of those looking for

employment.

They set up a Kurkure factory by taking a loan under the scheme. They worked hard, and today their Kurkure is being exported to other countries.

Jaiswal brothers have given employment to dozens of youth in their factory.

Factory operator and younger brother Sanjay Jaiswal said, "After completing my intermediate studies, I went to look for work in big cities, but could not find work anywhere. After this, I came to know about this scheme run by the government. I understood this scheme well and then decided to set up a Kurkure factory.”

Elder brother Vijay Jaiswal said, "We started planning to set up this plant six-seven months ago. It was not easy for an ordinary family to raise the capital required for the plant. We applied for a loan of Rs 10 lakh 88 thousand under the PMFME scheme, which was approved.”

“We are running the plant well. I would only like to tell the youth that they should not waste their time on jobs and rather join a business. No business is ruined, and can grow from a small one to a big one. We thank the Prime Minister for this scheme," he added.

President’s Estate in Dehradun to open for public viewing from June 24

Rashtrapati Niketan, the 186-year-old Presidential Retreat in Dehradun, will open for public viewing from June 24, 2025, an official said on Saturday.

The estate, spread over 21 acres, is being thrown open to the public as part of an initiative to increase citizen engagement with the President and heritage of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official said in a statement.

President Droupadi Murmu will visit the Rashtrapati Niketan on June 20 to review the preparations for the opening of the Estate for public.

She will also lay the foundation stone for Rashtrapati Udyan, a 132-acre ecological park on the occasion, said the official, adding that it is likely to be completed by next year.

Under this initiative, since 2023, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rashtrapati

CM

Nilayam, Hyderabad, and Rashtrapati Niwas, Mashobra, were opened up for public visits six days a week.

As part of this move, even the Change of Guard Ceremony has been started at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan in a new format with increased seating capacity from February, the official said.

Dehradun-based Rashtrapati Niketan, earlier known as Rashtrapati Ashiana, was used by the President's Bodyguards for the training of PBG horses. This heritage building now showcases a curated selection of artwork and offers a glimpse into its rich legacy, said the statement. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the stables and horses of the President's Bodyguard.

The Lily Pond, Rockery Pond, Rose Garden, and Pergola will

also be points of attraction for the visitors.

In addition to the Rashtrapati Niketan, people can also visit the Rashtrapati Tapovan, a 19-acre dense forest trail on the Rajpur Road. The Tapovan offers a serene escape into nature with a rich canopy of native trees, winding trails, wooden bridges, elevated machans for birdwatching, and quiet spots for reflection and meditation.

It has been developed with the aim of connecting visitors with the natural world through guided trails, seasonal flora, and ecointerpretive elements.

The proposed Rashtrapati Udyan is planned to be developed as a dynamic environmental and recreational space - featuring thematic gardens, a butterfly garden, a scenic lake, an aviary, and a dedicated children's play area.

The park plan also includes a sports zone, walking tracks, jogging and cycling tracks, water conservation systems, and outdoor learning installations — creating a living classroom that encourages environmental awareness, active lifestyles, and family-friendly engagement in harmony with nature, said the statement.

Yogi’s green vision: Uttar Pradesh on track to become eco-tourism hotspot

In line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, the Forest and Wildlife Department of Uttar Pradesh is actively transforming the state into a hub of ecotourism.

Significantly, the department is working to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of Uttar Pradesh, while launching new initiatives to promote sustainable tourism. One such initiative is the ‘Buffer Mein Safar’ (journey through the buffer zones) scheme.

This scheme aims to ramp up tourist experiences in the buffer zones of tiger reserves across the state.

As part of what is being seen as a big initiative, new safari routes are being developed in the buffer zones of Dudhwa, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, and North Kheri. Areas such as Bhira and Mohammadi are being explored for new ecotourism opportunities. The Forest and Wildlife department is also imparting training to residents so

Indian Haj pilgrims praise Centre for quality facilities, seamless conduct of holy journey

Indians who embarked on Haj pilgrimage appreciated arrangements and the quality of facilities offered by the Indian government to ensure a smooth and seamless journey for all in Saudi Arabia.

"Indian pilgrims who went for Haj 2025 through the Haj Committee of India are very happy with the management of the Government of India and the facilities being provided there. It is the constant endeavour of the Ministry of Minority Affairs to ensure a comfortable and dignified journey for every Haj pilgrim," the Ministry of Minority Affairs posted on X on Saturday. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, George Kurian, on Friday highlighted the dedicated efforts of the Centre in ensuring a smooth and successful Haj for pilgrims.

Earlier on Friday, Indian Consul General of Jeddah, Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri, led 'Team India' deployed in Haj 2025, in facilitating the movement of pilgrims from Haram Shareef to

as to serve as guides, restaurant operators, and other tourismrelated roles. This is how the department is aiming to promote local employment and skill development.

The initiative is already showing positive results, with a significant rise in the number of eco-tourism visitors to the state in recent years. Tourists will now be able to enjoy safaris even during the monsoon season, as tiger reserves are being kept open for longer periods.

In addition to the existing tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, the Forest and Wildlife Department is also expanding eco-tourism prospects to new locations. In southern Kheri, tourist circuits have been developed in Gola, Mohammadi Range, and Bhira. The Semrai Lake, a known habitat for migratory birds, is also being included in the tourism circuit for birdwatching and nature excursions. Furthermore, jungle safaris have been initiated in the buffer zone of Katarniaghat, which lies close to the Nepal border. With its natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and abundance of wildlife, the area is expected to become a major attraction for tourists seeking an immersive nature experience.

their accommodations in Azizia (Mecca) after offering Friday prayer.

The huge rush of pilgrims coming out from Haram Shareef after offering Friday prayer required coordination among 'Team India' members to guide the pilgrims to their designated bus points and provide on-the-spot required medical care and assistance. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta eyes new circuit to boost tourism

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra for developing tourism in states, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said that her government will develop a new tourist circuit in the city.

Apart from the traditional tourist destinations like Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Birla Mandir and Humayun’s Tomb, the Delhi government wants to attract tourists to new destinations like Yashobhoomi, Bharat Mandapam, Amrit Udyan, Shaheed Smarak and Yamuna river front zone, she said.

Earlier in the day, the Chief

Minister attended the Niti Aayog Governing Council meeting and hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for keeping away such discussions over the past decade.

In a message on social media platform X before attending the meeting, CM Gupta said: “Today, after many years, we are going to represent Delhi in the Governing Council meeting of Niti Aayog. Due to the conduct of the previous irresponsible governments, the issue of Delhi's rights was not being raised in the commission meeting, but now, the double-engine government is on track.”

A ‘Made in US’ Apple iPhone can cost nearly Rs 3 lakh: Analysts

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS) A ‘Made in US’ Apple iPhone can cost a whopping $3,500 (more than Rs 2,98,000) in absence of a fully-integrated supply chain in the country, top analysts have said.

Dan Ives, global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, told the CNN that the idea of fully domestic iPhone production is a “fictional tale.”

Ives also warned that replicating Apple’s complex Asian supply chain in the US would result in massive cost increases.

The report quoted him as saying that “You build that (supply chain) in the US with a fab in West Virginia and New Jersey. They’ll be $3,500 iPhones”.

Moreover, it would take Apple at least three years and a massive $30 billion just to shift 10 per cent of its supply chain to the US, according to market watchers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the company’s latest quarterly earnings call that “the majority” of iPhones shipped to the US for the June quarter will soon come from India.

US President Donald Trump has threatened a 50 per cent tax on all imports from the European Union as well a 25 per cent tariff on Apple products unless iPhones are made in the US.

However, according to informed sources, India's competitive edge makes it a natural choice for tech giants like Apple, and the tech giant has assured the government of its commitment to manufacture its products and boost the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The country has shown big companies like Apple the value of "Make in India”. According to people close to the matter,

“There is no change in Apple’s investment plans in India”. India has become a key hub for Apple’s global supply chain in recent years. Global tech giants such as Apple see a lot of economic sense in setting up manufacturing facilities in the country.

Apple registered the highest growth of 23 per cent among the top five brands in India in the January-March quarter, shipping a first-quarter record of three million units, an IDC report said. In the March quarter, iPhone 16 was the highest shipped model, accounting for 4 per cent of overall India shipments during Q1 2025.

India is increasingly becoming a critical and strategic node in Apple’s global supply chain — not just owing to its growing attractive domestic market, but also its expanding export capabilities and conducive policy environment, according to Prabhu Ram, VP at CyberMedia Research (CMR).

South Korean, Japanese biz leaders agree to boost cooperation in AI, chips

Seoul, May 28 (IANS) Business leaders of South Korea and Japan on Wednesday agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and other key sectors while supporting Seoul's efforts to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The agreement was part of a joint statement adopted during the 57th South Korea-Japan Business Conference held in

Seoul, which brought together some 300 business and economic representatives from the two countries for an annual two-day meeting, reports Yonhap news agency.

"On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties (between Seoul and Tokyo), we reaffirm the trust and friendship built over the years and hope to collaborate for the bright future of South Korea, Japan and the world," the statement read. Specific areas of cooperation include carbon neutrality, hydrogen energy, AI and semiconductor industries, as well as bio and health care sectors. They also agreed to collaborate on addressing social challenges, such as low birthrates and aging

populations.

On South Korea's bid to join the CPTPP, the participants agreed to support preliminary measures among relevant organizations to facilitate the move.

The CPTPP is a major IndoPacific trade pact comprising 12 countries, including Japan, Australia, Canada, Britain and Vietnam, that together accounted for about 15.2 percent of global trade as of 2019.

South Korean stocks finished markedly higher to hit a threemonth high on Wednesday, driven by gains in tech shares, as the United States' temporary pause on tariffs against the European Union boosted investor appetite for risky assets. The local currency fell against the U.S. dollar.

AI agents to drive next wave of enterprise transformation in 2025: Nasscom

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) Enterprises are expected to spend 3-4 times more funds on AI agents in 2025, signalling a strategic reallocation of budgets away from classical AI and even GenAI toward more interactive, autonomous agent-based systems, a Nasscom-led report said on Thursday.

The next frontier of enterprise transformation is being shaped by AI agents, which are rapidly progressing from experimentation to deployment.

As organisations move toward synchronous AI architectures, AI agents are emerging as a core capability, said the report by Nasscom in partnership with Avasant.

Currently, 27 per cent of enterprises report having AI agents in production or at scale, while 31 per cent are at the proofof-concept stage, and another 30 per cent plan to initiate PoCs or scale deployments in 2025.

The outlook for 2025 signals a fundamental transformation in digital strategies, marked by a decisive pivot toward AI-first operations.

“2025 will mark a decisive turning point in enterprise transformation, where the shift from digital-first to AI-first becomes not just a strategy, but an operational imperative,” said

Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Nasscom.

The transition to synchronous AI agents marks a fundamental shift towards seamless humanmachine collaboration, unlocking new levels of productivity and innovation.

Enterprises that invest in modular, agile architectures and build AI-ready workforces will be best positioned to navigate uncertainty and capture growth opportunities in the coming decade, Gupta noted.

Enterprises are beginning to transition from being merely digital to becoming truly AIfirst -- embedding intelligence across workflows, decisions, and experiences.

In 2024, 40 per cent of the companies spent over 40 per cent of their tech budget on digital, compared to just 15 per cent in 2023.

According to the survey findings, 67 per cent of global enterprises spent 10 per cent or more of digital budget on AI in 2024. Digital spending, despite volatility, is likely to stay course in 2025. Enterprises are planning to allocate over 18 per cent of their digital tech portfolio spend on AI in 2025, up from 14 per cent in 2024, said the report.

Akshay Khanna, Managing Partner, Avasant, said, “In 2025, we’re seeing a decisive surge in digital investments -- 81 per cent of enterprises expect higher digital spending compared to last year, with a strong focus on AI technologies, including predictive, generative, and synchronous AI”.

Infectious animal diseases migrating to new species, about half raise threat to humans: Report

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS)

Infectious animal diseases are affecting new areas and species, with half (47 per cent) having zoonotic -- or animal-to-human – potential, raising the risk of newer pandemics, according to a global report.

The new annual assessment, published by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), provides the first comprehensive review of animal disease trends, risks, and challenges, from the uptake and availability of vaccines to the use of antibiotics in animals. It showed that the reported

number of avian influenza outbreaks in mammals more than doubled last year compared to 2023 with 1,022 outbreaks across 55 countries compared to 459 outbreaks in 2023.

While its risk to humans remains low, the more mammalian species such as cattle, cats, or dogs are infected, the greater the possibility of the virus adapting to mammal-to-mammal, and potentially human, transmission, the authors said.

“The spread, prevalence, and impact of infectious animal diseases are changing, bringing new challenges for agriculture and food security, human health and development, and natural ecosystems,” said Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, Director General of WOAH.

The report also mentioned the increasing distribution and intensity of diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF), avian influenza, foot and mouth disease (FMD), and peste des petits ruminants (PPR). It warned that their proliferation was

PM Modi calls on people to join International Yoga Day, praises Andhra govt’s YogAndhra Abhiyan

New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reiterated his appeal to the citizens to actively participate in the upcoming International Yoga Day on June 21 and lauded the efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government for promoting yoga culture through its YogAndhra Abhiyan campaign.

While addressing the 122nd edition of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, "Less than a month is left for 'International Yoga Day'. This occasion reminds us that if you are still away from yoga, join yoga now. Yoga will change the way you live your life. Friends, since the beginning of 'Yoga Day' on June 21, 2015, attraction towards it has risen continuously." He noted the growing global enthusiasm for yoga, saying, "This time also, the zeal and enthusiasm among people all over the world about 'Yoga Day' is amply visible. Myriad institutions are sharing their preparations. The pictures from past years have been very inspiring. We have seen that during these years, people in various countries have made Yoga Chain or Yoga Ring."

"There are many pictures which depict four generations doing yoga together. Many people have chosen iconic places in their city for yoga. You can also think of celebrating Yoga Day in some interesting way this time," he said.

Referring to Andhra Pradesh's YogAndhra Abhiyan, the Prime Minister said, "Its objective is to develop the yoga culture in the entire state. Under this campaign, a pool of 10 lakh people practising yoga is being created. I will get an opportunity to participate in the 'Yoga Day' programme in Visakhapatnam this year."

The Prime Minister expressed happiness about youth participation in yoga and said, "I am happy to know that this time too our young friends are going to perform yoga at iconic places related to the heritage of the country. Many youth have pledged to create a record and become a part of the Yoga Chain."

He also mentioned that the private and corporate sectors are embracing the yoga culture in innovative ways.

"Our corporations are also not lagging in this. Some institutions have set aside a separate place for yoga practice in their offices. Some startups have set up 'office yoga hours'. Some people are preparing to go to villages and teach yoga. This awareness of people about health and fitness gives me immense joy," PM Modi said.

Health revolution begins: Delhi’s first Ayushman Arogya Mandir opens this week

destabilising agrifood systems, which can undermine global food security and biodiversity, in addition to human health.

The report cited climate change and increased trade as factors influencing the spread and prevalence of animal diseases, majorly recorded across several regions in 2024 and early 2025. Although many are preventable through a combination of vaccination, improved hygiene, and biosecurity measures, the report noted that access to animal vaccines remains uneven around the world.

“Alongside other measures, vaccination remains one of the most powerful disease prevention tools available, saving countless lives, preventing economic losses, and reducing the need for antimicrobial treatments,” Soubeyran added.

The report also emphasised the importance of disease prevention for reducing the need for antibiotic treatment and limiting the development of drugresistant diseases.

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) Delhi's first Ayushman Arogya Mandir is now ready to begin operations from the Tis Hazari Court complex. Previously functioning as a Mohalla Clinic, the facility has now been upgraded and redesigned to offer improved healthcare services under a new format.

The official inauguration will take place on May 31, led by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The launch is part of a special event at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, marking the completion of 100 days of the current Delhi government. As part of the occasion, 33 new healthcare facilities will also be introduced.

The newly developed Ayushman Arogya Mandir is equipped with several features that set it apart. It offers in-house diagnostic capabilities with 14 types of medical tests now available directly at the clinic. In addition

to this, outsourced testing options will enable 79 more diagnostic tests to be accessed through the centre.

The facility is also integrated with the National Immunisation Programme, making routine vaccinations available on-site. In addition to this, yoga sessions will be held every Monday and Friday, and comprehensive family planning services will be offered, including pre- and postpregnancy care.

The centre will operate daily from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., and will be staffed by a medical officer, a nurse, a multipurpose health worker, and a sanitation worker. Previously, the Mohalla Clinic at the site offered only basic doctor consultations, and most tests had to be done externally. Key services like vaccination were also unavailable. Now, under the new Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandir model, all essential health services are being brought under one roof. Local people are quite enthusiastic about the upcoming Arogya Mandir. The BJP government in Delhi has an ambitious plan to expand health services through these centres.

Protect from the Sun

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.

Use the Right Tools

Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.

"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends

to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

Miley Cyrus finally reveals the catalyst to her viral 2013 VMAs performance

Hollywood singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus has shared what led to her viral 2013 VMAs performance, and she even credited chat show host Jimmy Kimmel for his help.

The 32-year-old Grammywinning artiste appeared on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, and acknowledged that the late-night

Ananya Panday’s

host has watched Cyrus grow before his very eyes, reports ‘People’ magazine.

The singer explained that her first touch with the controversial Bangerz performances in 2013 began with an appearance on Kimmel’s show.

She said, “Let me tell you, I am so

heartfelt

happy to see you in my new era. This new era is very sophisticated and I have to tell you, your show allowed me to create the VMAs in 2013. I came here first and I kind of used the show as a trial run, you know, where I dance as a teddy bear like half naked, and everyone thought I was crazy. But to see if it was going to work, I did it here first”.

As per ‘People’, the ‘Angels Like You’ singer performed an outdoor show with a few of her big hits on Kimmel’s show in June 2013. Then, in August 2013, she notably performed at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, where she performed a nearly nude twerking performance with Robin Thicke. Despite shocking audiences, it catapulted her to new levels of controversy, while also becoming standard fare for the singer. Since the performance, she has reflected on its impact on her career. In a 2018 interview with Wonderland magazine, she said it helped her grow and realize her potential to reach people.

"Not only was culture changed, but my life and career were changed forever”, she told the outlet. "It inspired me to use my platform for something much bigger. If the world is going to focus on me and what I am doing, then what I am doing should be impactful and it should be great”.

Pierce Brosnan admits he was terrified of singing in ‘Mamma Mia!’

Did you know Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan was terrified to sing in the musical "Mamma Mia!", but here is what helped him overcome his fear.

Talking to Vanity Fair during the promotion of his latest show, "Mobland", Brosnan revisited recording SOS from the musical, named "a warhorse of a song".

"It's not an easy song to sing, and I was mildly terrified," Brosnan

admitted.

Revealing what finally gave him the courage to sing, Brosnan shared, "The only thing that kind of gave me some solace and some peace was to see Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard look as equally freaked out as I was as we sat down with Benny [Andersson] and Bjorn [Ulvaeus] and went straight into recording the songs."

He revealed that they had to sing the songs out loud during the scenes to make it believable. Brosnan went on to explain, "So you record the songs, and then you sing back to the track, but you have to sing because you have to see the effort in the vocal cords, and you have to act the song out."

He further shared that to help him act and sing simultaneously, the musical director of "Mamma Mia!" used to stand right beside the camera to count him in.

"I could never really count in. I was no good. I think you can actually see me look to the side of the camera at some point."
