Commodore’s Message In the early Spring of 2021, with Corona virus widespread in the Northern Neck and vaccines just becoming available, the Bridge decided to push in-person gatherings back to later in the year. After almost everyone staying indoors and away from family and friends for most of 2020, we were optimistic that we could resume many of our traditional events and practices in the new year. We dubbed the season Fun in 21! in hopes we could make it so. Thanks to the patience of members and the e orts of our excellent Bridge and many volunteers, a record number of members enjoyed cruises and parties and did indeed have a great time. This report is dedicated to them. On the following pages we have listed those who made special e orts on behalf of the Yacht Club. We hope we have not missed anyone and sincerely apologize if we did. Each of the Bridge o cers has submitted a report on actions taken this year. Please review these reports which are appended following the photo gallery which immediately follows.

Fun in ’21! ~ ICYC Year in Pictures March 27 USCGA Safety Seminar Vice Commodore George Fentress and Barbara Fentress arranged a well attended Safety Seminar on March 27 with members of Flotilla 33 of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary at the Club’s docks. Active duty Coastguardsmen also participated. This session set the stage for boat inspections which George also arranged at the Shakedown Cruise.

As we watched an ominous front approaching, we made the decision to move the event indoors for the safety and comfort of participants and spectators. Brian Clarke arranged for the pipers and an excellent bu et dinner following the ceremony, which was dedicated to past Commodore John Hunt and also remembered Mike Conroy who had recently passed away.

Shakedown Cruise to Gilligan’s Island June 25-26 Shawn and Jim Lamb, along with co-captains Bob and Susan Wayland, put the party together with assistance from a squad of creative decorators and enthusiastic Millionaires, Loveys, Professors, Mary Anns, a Gilligan and a Ginger. The Club prepared two great dinners and a delicious breakfast. Out on a Limb serenaded us. The Knot Tying Seminar was very popular, two tables of Mah Jongg players competed, a racquet clinic was well received, and a Best Ball golf tourney attracted both novice golfers and frequent players. George Fentress arranged USCGA courtesy boat safety inspections.

Responding to several requests from members, the Yacht Club o ered our rst ever adult sailing classes in June under the leadership of Sailing Master Dan Hoyt. Nine students enrolled and all graduated! Je Heller, Je Hunt and Bob Wayland were instructors and Brian Clarke assisted. We are grateful to Joy and Stu Kramer, Je Hunt and Dennis Du who loaned boats for use by the students. The American 14, which Len and Lynne Engstrom donated to the Club was also used. The students especially enjoyed their nal lessons aboard Je and Joyce Heller’s Serendipity, Brian and Vickie Murray’s Southern Yankee, and Dan and Debby Hoyt’s Glorious.

This cruise had it all! Wild ponies, light houses, Wright Brothers memorial and museum, Lost Colony performance, and Lifesaving demonstration, not to mention the famous Coinjock Prime Rib, locks, lift bridges, swing bridges, and the much-storied Albermarle Sound.

In our second COVID summer, we were pleased that the Youth Sailing Camp returned to our home waters of Indian Creek and that participation rose over last year to 49 young people!

Micki & Ron Pugh, Je & Kathryn Wainscott, and Marcy & Al Ross What an action packed foray into the North Carolina mountains! A welcome reception atop the AC Marriott kicked o our visit. The group enjoyed a private tour of the historic sites in Asheville. The tour of the remarkable Biltmore grounds and mansion had some wondering if they would enjoy a bowling alley in their homes. We shared a delightful group lunch in the mansion’s beautiful Stables. Those Vanderbilt horses enjoyed some swanky digs!

Several participants enjoyed a VIP tour of breweries that are part of the vibrant craft brewing scene, and enjoyed samples of their products.

Steve & Ann Bedford, Len & Lynne Engstrom, Dan & Debby Hoyt, and Joe Sarnowski & Polly Cox Led by Steve and Ann, the Past Commodore team arranged a grand time in Solomons Island and Cambridge. Docktails and SIYC’s traditional tuna and steak cookout got us into the party mood!

Our Cambridge stay included visits to the Harriet Tubman Museum and Blackwater Wildlife refuge and a chance to see a lot of t Ironman competitors. Fierce competition at Jenga and Corn Hole preceded a Docktail dinner that showed what talented chefs our YC boasts.

Secretary’s Report

by Nancy Frank As of October 1, 2021, we have 250 yacht club members.

Despite still being in a pandemic, this is an 8% increase from 2020.

Our Yacht Club Handbook and Roster continue to be published on ICYCC’s website, giving members easy access to information. A hard copy may be requested through the Club office and one will be printed.

Indian Creek Yacht Club continues its membership in the Yachting Club of America (YCA), a national association of over 700 registered yacht and sailing clubs. Our membership in this organization provides reciprocity for ICYC members at yacht clubs throughout the country. Information on YCA reciprocal clubs can be found on the ICYCC website under the Yacht Club/reciprocal section tab.

Burgees continue to be available in the ICYCC Pro Shop. All new members will receive an ICYC name tag. Additional name tags may be purchased at the member expense through the Club office at any time.

Treasurer’s Report

by Paul Harris The financial year of the Club is the calendar year January 1 to December 31.

We began 2021 with a cash balance of approximately $17,000. Covid 19 was a significant challenge and created much uncertainty regarding the financial requirements for the year. The bridge decided to postpone several major events until after May 1 with the hope that the virus would be clear.

252 members paid to join the Club in 2021 producing approximately $10,000 in dues income for the year. This is the highest Club membership in several years.

A budget for the year 2021 was adopted and approved in January 2021 to coincide with planned events for the year and a revised schedule.

A significant part of the financial management of the Club is assumed by the cruise captains who plan and budget for various events during the year. The Club Treasury underwrites cruise captains, and any expense overages or shortages are absorbed by the Club Treasury. During 2021, cruise captains were very diligent and overall, for the year there was no loss to the Club Treasury.

Expenses for the year 2021 are estimated to be $11,000, thus the Club should start 2022 with a cash balance of $16,000 therefore the Bridge recommends that the dues for 2022 remain at $40 per year, unchanged in the last 6 years.

Vice Commodore’s Report

The Vice Commodore is responsible for planning Winter Educational Programs, arranging Reciprocity with other yacht clubs, publicity promotion for the Yacht Club, and managing the Commodore’s Ball.

We planned 2021 with the expectation Covid would be on the decline as the year progressed. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

In March, we arranged for the USCG and USCG Auxiliary to present a Suddenly in Command outdoor event, complete with a patrol boat, at the ICYCC docks. The presentation was very well attended and reinforced the fact that our members are interested in education and concerned about safety afloat.

Next up for winter education was a virtual presentation by Dr. Lisa Kellogg of Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, inviting anglers to help determine the populations of fish species using the “RecFish” tool providing research data on our amazing Chesapeake Bay. VIMS presentations never disappoint.

Yacht Club Reciprocity is a valuable membership perk and as our members cruise the Bay it provides access to quality marina facilities, and in some cases, at a reduced cost. Annually we are in communication with those yacht clubs making sure they know our current transient rates and that our “evergreen” agreement is still in place. With Covid, there has been a spike in boating, and clubs are seeking new destinations.

With our location and facilities, ICYCC is a premier Club on the Bay sought by cruisers.

Throughout the year, we strove to promote ICYC and ICYCC in the press, by providing articles and photos of our events. These articles appeared in The Rappahannock Record and the boating magazine, SpinSheet. Great publicity for the Club, and our members enjoyed seeing their names and pictures in print.

An additional role of the Vice Commodore is the planning of the Commodore’s Ball.

Unfortunately, again this year the Ball was cancelled due to COVID and concern that holding it outdoors in November might not be as comfortable as we would want.

Rear Commodore’s Report

The Rear Commodore was fundamentally the principal Party Planner! With the exception of the Commodore’s Ball, planned by the Vice Commodore, the Rear Commodore and First Mate are responsible for the major land- based events. Our time is spent worrying about food, drink, music, flowers, and table settings. But in the end – the primary focus is camaraderie amongst members, whether they be new to the club or longstanding. Simply put, we design fun on the land.

With the continuation of Covid-19, the calendar for our events again was massaged. Every event was pushed forward on the calendar in the hopes that Covid would loosen its grip on the Club. And happily, with many very successful events – most of which were scheduled out of doors for a safer environment -- we had the perfect balance of fun and safety with all members remaining Covid free.

Our year began with a twist on an old theme. The traditional Sock Burning was rescheduled for May and coincided with Cinco de Mayo. Thus, we launched Socko De Mayo! Seventy-five members gathered round the bonfire to say goodbye to our socks, welcome warmer weather, and drink complimentary Margaritas. Socko de Mayo was followed by the traditional Flag Raising where eight (8) former Commodores joined the Bridge in this time-honored event. And fortunately, with the quick thinking of current Commodore Bob Wayland, we moved the event indoors in time to miss a massive thunderstorm that would otherwise have truly dampened the evening. Seventy-five (75) members enjoyed the bagpipe band, the trumpeting of our National Anthem, and a solemn remembrance of two recently lost members, John Hunt and Mike Conroy.

The highlight of the year was the rebranded Summer Soiree (the rebranded Spring Fling). One hundred and four (104) members gathered under the tent for fabulous food, camaraderie that was truly enhanced by a blind draw for seating, and spectacular music by the Road Ducks. Now the year for the Rear Commodore concludes with the planning of the Yacht Club’s Annual Meeting, an event to say goodbye to the year that was, introduce the next year’s Bridge, and anticipate the good times to come. As of this writing, there are already forty members signed up for this lovely tradition of the Club.

Fleet Captain’s Report

By Randy Graham A Return to Normalcy!

As we began the planning for the 2021 cruising season, our country (and the world) was still in a lockdown due to the COVID 19 pandemic, but we were hopeful that widespread availability of the Covid 19 vaccines would allow us to resume an active cruising schedule by late spring. Many cruises that had been planned for 2020, but then cancelled due to the pandemic, had willing and able cruise captains, with many of the cruise logistics already worked out. So, we planned a full, but “back-end loaded” cruise schedule, and hoped for the best!

Thankfully, the vaccines did arrive, and Covid restrictions were reduced just in time to complete our scheduled cruises. Here are some of the highlights: !Shakedown Cruise: We scheduled our Shakedown Cruise for June 4th – 6th, to be held at the Club following our Flag Raising. Cruise Captains Jim & Shawn Lamb and Bob & Susan Wayland took full advantage of the Club’s facilities for the “Gilligan’s Island” themed weekend and had a record 112 participants! !Outer Banks Cruise: In July Cruise Captains Mike & Dee Byrne and Dan & Debbie Hoyt led us on our first “Out of the Bay” adventure, a cruise to Manteo, North Carolina for four nights and three days of Outer Banks adventures.

Highlights included chasing the wild Spanish Mustangs through the dunes of Corolla aboard specially outfitted 4-wheel drive Safari trucks; touring the Wright Brothers Memorial; visiting several of the famed Outer Banks’s lighthouses; watching a life-saving demonstration at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, and watching The Lost Colony, an outdoor theater production in its 84th year. !Progressive Dinner: The Saunders, Maynard’s and Pate’s hosted our perennially popular Progressive Dinner on July 24th this year on Indian Creek; in order to create more equity among who got to attend this event which sells out quickly, we hosted a lottery among the registrants. !Ice Cream Social: Al & Marcy Ross hosted this family-friendly event at their home on August 1st.

!Mini-Cruise on Antipoison Creek: On August 27th John & Bev Upshur hosted a Margarita-themed gathering for 84 folks at their home on Antipoison Creek,

!Land Cruise to Asheville: In late August 32 ICYC members boarded their land yachts and cruised to the mountains of western North Carolina for a fun-filled week of touring.

Highlights included touring the Biltmore House & Grounds; a trolley tour of Asheville; cocktails and dinner at The Grove Park Inn; wine tasting at the Biltmore; and a microbrewery tour. !Past Commodores Cruise: In September PC Steve Bedford and his wife Ann organized a distinguished group of ICYC Past Commodores (PC Jean Light & husband Tom; PC Dan Hoyt & wife Debby; PC Joe Sarnowski & friend Polly; PC Len Engstrom and wife Lynne) to lead a group of 40 ICYC cruisers to Solomon’s Island, MD and Cambridge, MD. Activities varied from cooking classes in Solomon’s Island to touring the Harriet Tubman Museum and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge outside of Cambridge, but we made sure that the schedule left ample time for enjoying the multiple pools and spa at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort.

Sailing Master’s Report

by Dan Hoyt The ICYCC youth sailing camp once again was held at the club marina after a year in 2019 where we combined with Premier Sailing at the Tides Inn. 48 youth participated over the course of 4 weeks. As usual, the club provided Opti’s and 420’s for the program and Premier Sailing provided the instructors. This year we also added the American 14.6 which proved to be of great benefit. Unfortunately, we decided not to conduct a youth regatta this year, hopefully we can resume again in 2022.

We conducted our inaugural adult sailing program this year. 8 members participated with instruction provided by Jeff Hunt, Jeff Heller, Bob Wayland and Dan Hoyt. Club members Stu Kramer and Jeff Hunt along with former member Dennis Duff loaned us their keelboats for our use. Many thanks!!

Due to scheduling conflicts, we were unable to hold this year’s ICYCC Regatta.

We expect to resume in 2022.

As a follow up to the Marina Business Plan approved by the Bridge in 2019, an application for a No Wake Zone near the ICYCC marina was made to Northumberland County. Significant opposition was heard at the public hearing. As a result, we decided to withdraw our application. At meeting with club members, all agreed to post a “Please Mind Your Wake” sign on a member’s dock near the club. The sign is now up and visible to those traveling through the area.

Port Captain’s Report

by John Upshur Marina Overview for 2021

Several upgrades and additions were made to the marina in 2021 as listed below.

•The three old emergency recovery ladders were replaced by three new retractable ladders to alleviate marine growth on the rungs.

•An emergency spill kit was permanently installed in a dock box under the sun canopy.

•The pump out station was repaired. Slip labels were repaired or replaced.

•Recovery lines were added to the throwable life rings at the seven safety stations.

•

The installation of piling caps was completed and most of the old, cracked caps were replaced.

•

New signage was installed at the marina to indicate that swimming is prohibited due to the potential danger of Electric Shock Drowning (ESD).

•

The repair or replacement of cracked or warped dock boards is an ongoing effort. Any slip holder or visitor to the marina is encouraged to bring any unsafe condition on the walkways to the attention of the Port Captain or ICYCC Management.

Transients While concerns about COVID still exist, we had more large groups of boaters visiting the ICYCC marina during 2021 compared to 2020. We have noticed that boaters are becoming more aware of the new electrical code and the electrical testing. We routinely send a letter to all visiting boaters prior to their arrival to describe the electrical test, why we do it and what they can do to be ready for it.

The Marina realized significant revenue from annual slipholders and visiting boaters and Yacht Clubs. Visitors played golf, ate at the Club House, played tennis and purchased items in the Pro Shop.

Shoal Area

One sailboat had difficulty with water depth while docking on the west side of the marina. As a result, the depth profile in this area was updated with new measurements, taken by Dan Hoyt and Len Engstrom, and the shoal signage will be modified to reflect this.
