As we wind down the summer, w forward to the transition to Fall, leaves will change colors, provid more color to the scenic master is the Northern Neck Fall also br many fun and traditional events the least of which is the Annual Shareholders Meeting which will on Tuesday, November 19th. We forward to the election of a new Directors as well as provide upd your Club.
Continuing from the articles pub last month’s Smoke Signals, the Committee, Finance Committee are continuing the discussion ab Capital expenditures and incom component of these discussions to get member input. With that, be an informational meeting foll survey to gain the sense of the membership. It’s almost hard to believe that the last comprehensive survey regarding capital planning took place in 2017! (There have been 284 new members who have joined since then!)
So while there have been several Capital Projects that have been completed (dining room renovation, racquet lighting, dock expansion, new irrigation well, new pavilion, etc.) there are still many on the horizon and need to be planned and sequenced based on member feedback. Please make sure to read the Superintendents Corner as Pete gives an overview of the bunkers and way forward.
So as you use and have used the facilities, we look for your input as to how keep the Club with exciting facilities for years and members to come!

I have commented in the past about the benefits of being a member of the Yacht Club at ICYCC. For years we have touted that the $40 in annual membership dues was well worth it because of the great parties the Yacht Club throws (think Spring Fling, Sock Burning, Flag Raising and Commodores Ball). This year we have added a host of “River Rat” cruises – localized small boat or land cruise events – which Yacht Club members without “Yachts” can take full advantage of But there is another advantage of being a Yacht Club member that many folks are not aware of that makes the modest annual Yacht Club dues a bargain: reciprocal memberships
Indian Creek Yacht Club maintains special Reciprocity Agreements with other Yacht Clubs around the Chesapeake Bay and, through Yacht Clubs of America, around the country. That means that, if you are in cities like Annapolis, Norfolk, Hampton or Virginia Beach, you have access to facilities like the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Norfolk Yacht Club, the Hampton Yacht Club, or the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club in Virginia Beach. Every time Carolyn & I are in Annapolis we schedule at least one dinner at the fabulous Annapolis Yacht Club, enjoying “the privileges of membership.” The same holds true of Virginia Beach and the Cavalier. And through the Yacht Clubs of America affiliation, you can enjoy the similar privileges at countless yacht clubs around the country. It all contributes to making those modest annual Yacht Club dues a great bargain – one that brings a host of “privileges of membership”!
The Commodore’s Cruise on Carters Creek was won in the Crushing Cancer raffle by Kay Stout, who decided to use it as a team building event for the ICYCC Ladies golf team competing in the 78th VSGA Women’s State Team Matches at Belmont Country Club August 26-28.
Hopefully the team building that took place will lead to an outstanding performance by our ladies golf team!
Thank you to our captains, Steve Young and Alan Pitts!
Club membership is your passport to a world of enriching experiences, and one of the most delightful is cruising with friends There’s nothing quite like the joy of sharing new adventures on the water, where laughter and memories flow as easily as the waves.
A perfect example of this camaraderie is the recent trip by Past Commodore Brian and Ellen Clarke. Not only did they embark on an exciting journey to Lake Champlain, but they also extended a warm and heartfelt invitation to their ICYCC friends, Lou and Nancy Frank, to join them This trip beautifully illustrates the deep connections and lasting friendships that flourish both on and off the club campus, making every experience more special.

Product Spotlight- Our new picker has arrived, it will allow us to more effectively pick the range as well as save on labor costs. This is the 1st electric picker cart. An advantage to this is less maintenance as well as a quieter experience for members on the range practicing.
We were rerated by the USGA in early August, once I have results I will share these in coming newsletters. We will be adding a rating for a par 3 golf course at our facility starting next season!
We have talked about ball position on full swings, but it matters just as much on chip shots. When hitting a chip or a pitch shot, you must be aware of how a ball position effects the contact with the ground and shot type. When trying to hit a low "releasing shot" it is important to put the ball position slightly back or at the minimum in the middle of your stance. I see a lot of players trying to hit a low shot around the greens with the ball too far forward in the stance which can result in "topping" the golf ball or too far back outside of their back foot. This results in the club getting stuck into the ground and not gliding
Forward in your stance: Flop Shop
Between the middle to the back of your stance: Low running chip or pitch shot

We are pleased to report that the greenside bunker on hole #10 has been successfully completed using the Bunker Solution System. This system was straightforward to install and offers several key benefits:
Contamination Prevention: The material used prevents contamination from the subsoil into the bunker sand, eliminating the need for gravel, ensuring the sand remains gravel-free Lip Integrity: The fabric used on the bunker lip is designed to help maintain its integrity. Durability: The liner used on the bunker floor and face is tough enough to withstand damage from string trimmers and raking machines, reducing soil migration into the sand from the subsoil and minimizing sand migration during rain events.
The next trial will involve the right greenside bunker on hole #14, where we will be using material from Polylast Bunker Liner. Polylast claims that their system improves water flow through the bunkers by acting as an extension of the drainage system. Its porous material allows water to percolate into the soil at any point of contact, allegedly helping to prevent washouts. Additionally, the liner is designed to keep the sand clean by preventing rocks and dirt from the native subsurface from migrating into it.
Later in August/Early September, we will install another bunker system as recommended by one of the USGA representatives This trial will take place on the front/right-side bunker on #16 and will involve using Fescue sod as a liner, with a subsurface drainage system placed beneath the sand and Fescue All work on the bunkers will be completed by the ICYCC staff.
We look forward to hearing from golfers on the playability of all three bunker types. In addition to feedback, I will be analyzing the maintenance on each new bunker so we can arrive at the best type for ICYCC
See you out on the course.
Best Regards, Peter S. Stephens, CGCS
