SMOKE SIGNALS SEPTEMBER 2022 For All FALL FRIENDS HELP FRIENDS ENJOY FALL

The Board believes in the Club’s value, which is echoed by the more than 35 new memberships approved since April 1st! A big thank you to you, the Membership Committee, Megan Stephens our Membership Director and Board of Directors for your continued support, promotion, and enthusiasm of the Club to your friends, neighbors and colleagues!
In September, we see the seasonal transition from Summer to Fall. Welcoming those brisk mornings and picturesque evenings while the foliage begins to provide a beautiful array of color for us to enjoy. Around the Club, we too look to make several transitions. Many of the organized leagues begin to wrap up their 2022 seasons, but there are still tournaments to play and championships to win. Please do check the calendar page on the Club’s website for the up to date information on upcoming events.

One change that we are implementing with the goal to have a positive impact on the flow of information, is to send the Club’s Newsletter, Smoke Signals, two times by way of email. The first distribution will remain with the targeted date of the last week of the month. The second distribution will occur mid month so that you have an opportunity to review Smoke Signals again as your schedule may have changed since the initial release and you can make an event in which you may have had a prior conflict. Additionally, we will include a calendar page with your monthly club statement. This calendar will be distributed as an attachment electronically, or as a 1 page insert if you receive your statement via the mail. Please print it out, and place it in a location that best suits you for reminders of the events and activities taking place around the Club!

Lastly, this is the time where the Governance Committee is beginning the process for the election of Directors at the Annual Stockholders Meeting to take place on Tuesday, November 15th. If you are interested in the process or qualifications to serve as a director, please contact Gil Zimmerman, Governance Chair. A quick reminder of the Governance Process: the stockholding memberships elect the director candidates; the Board of Directors elects the Club President; appoints the Committee Chairs; and the Committee Chairs select their Committee Members. If you would like to serve on a committee, please do reach out to the respective chairperson (email addresses are listed on the last page of Smoke Signals) and express your interest in the committee. Changes are coming! And most importantly, we embrace these changes as they will help the Club navigate towards the future.

Many see Labor Day as the end of the summer fun, but is that the case? With September’s breezes, it is a great time to boat on the Bay or spend time outside socializing with friends. Yes, the Ice Cream Social will be held at Al and Marcy Ross’ home this year. This event is always very popular and is a wonderful opportunity to socialize with friends, plus be able to create that perfect ice cream treat. Mark your calendar for Saturday, the 10th of September. Next up, the Captain’s Choice Mid Bay Cruise; September 16th to the 23rd. Once again, your Yacht Club is attracting cruising boats, both power and sail, to for this on the water event. Is your preference spending time in marinas, or perhaps a quiet night at anchor in a creek? Yes, the choice is yours, and you can mix it up with Captain’s Choice. As the Mid Bay name implies, we will be exploring areas above the Potomac, but south of the Annapolis Bay Bridge Two pluses for this cruise; September cooling breezes, and waters in this section of the Bay tend to be calmer as opposed to the Lower Bay. Cruise Captains Seymours and Waylands have a great week planned. Rounding out the month, we have a Raft Up on Carter’s Creek. Previous on the water Raft Ups have been very popular, but this one is slightly different; arrive by water and socialize at the home of Randy and Carolyn Graham. Yes, for this two hour event you must arrive by water. We encourage all boat sizes to attend, and many will anchor out in Carters Creek for the night after the “Raft Up”. Mark your calendar for Saturday September 24th. Labor Day is not the end of Summer Fun!

Living Our Purpose

Last month, the Northern Neck held its annual summer butterfly count. A number of organizations track this count to keep up with what’s happening in the insect pollinator world. These are important pollinators for all our plants and trees. We had quite a few members participate in the count either on their own properties or with groups covering the entire Neck. We counted 40 species, more than ever before but only 925 individuals less than 1176 the previous year. Many of those counting are very experienced and great teachers. I learn new things each time I participate. You do not need to have experience to do so, anyone can join us. ICYCC is one of the great properties that we use for the count After 10 plus years planting native species of trees, shrubs and flowers, ICYCC draws a variety of butterflies. I am not sure who names them but some are quite unique. Cloudless sulphur, buckeyes, American lady, fritillaries and hairstreaks among them. Some are named after the plants that are their host Spicebush, and pipevine swallowtails, are examples. These beauties only have a life span of about 2 weeks. To survive to reproduce they use camouflage, mimicry and bad taste to make it through their lifespan. Some of their caterpillars and larvae look like bird droppings or have fake “eyes” to throw off predators, mainly birds looking to feed their young. So put out butterfly weed, common violets, zinnias, honeysuckle, milkweed, azaleas and tulip poplars among their favorites and they will come. You will have a colorful flying circus in your yard.
By Beth Kendrick First, let me give a huge THANK YOU to each person who attended our first ever group orientation. Most people join the club after learning WHAT we offer, but this was focused more specifically on not only what but HOW to make the most of club life even to the nitty gritty of sand type in the bunkers and the best way to hit out of them
This educational event was both informative and extremally social. another bonus you can only experience by coming out to the club. I've been sharing with anyone interested in joining that the initiation fees are increasing as of September 1st. If you know of someone interested, please reassure them that this is not a bad thing! This means our club is committed to capital planning, both with our current facilities and projects on the horizon. This increase will allow us to stay on track. If you've renovated a house lately, you probably noticed the cost of that project has increased significantly and so have all planned club projects and repairs. So - you can proudly share with your prospective members that you have a club that is looking an the financial health of the operation and ways to continue to be even better! I assure you that making decisions for over 900 individuals is not easy if you see a member of your board, please thank them for all they are doing!

Finding clubs that are right for you can be difficult if you’re not armed with the correct knowledge. The best avenue to take when buying new clubs is getting fit at the club, but even if you don’t get fitted, you still need to be conscientious of certain variables when getting new clubs.
One of the most important things you need to be aware of is what shaft flex is right for you. And although it’s not the only factor, looking at your swing speed can provide a general guideline to help you determine which shaft flex you should be playing.
Finding the Correct Flex for your Shafts
You should consider that your swing speed for your irons might not extrapolate perfectly to driver (and vice versa), so while a certain flex might be right in some clubs, that might not be the case in others. The chart below gives general ranges for how swing speed translates to ideal shaft flex and is a good place to start. So if you can’t get to a fitter, at least figure out your swing speed and you’ll be headed in the right direction.

Despite these factors, it's still business as usual with course and grounds maintenance. We continue to monitor greens for localized dry spot, scout for diseases and insects, control both summer weeds and pre-emerge for winter weeds. We have just applied one last bermudagrass fertilization and are preparing for greens aerification. There is still a lot of work left to accomplish on the course for the remainder of the season. The staff continues to prepare the course for daily play, women’s and men’s golf tournaments, as well as, make necessary irrigation repairs that pop up

TURF TALK
With the renovation of Holland's Hole, we have recycled plants and replanted them at the triangle going from number one green to number two tee at the marina road. We hope you enjoy them in their new location as you ride the course. Here are a couple of important home lawn tips to prepare your lawn for the upcoming Fall and Spring. Remember to always sweep or blow off all hard surfaces (Sidewalks, driveways, roadways) returning to the turf after application to reduce fertilizer runoff into the local waterways lawn. A slow release fertilizer works best for most applications fertilizers

Perhaps the greatest symbol of modern tennis is the open stance forehand. The traditional “turn step hit” pattern that establishes a linear type of hitting with momentum coming from stepping into the ball, has given place to the modern “load explode land” pattern, which establishes an angular style of hitting. The open stance forehand helps a player generate more power and pace to the shot, in addition to facilitating recovery and direction changing after the shot is executed. Click below to keep reading!
