FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

g Message

I am excited for the changing seasons taking place, especially the leaves to change colors and the brisk nights! There is a lot happening with Mother Nature as well as the Club.

We are halfway through the Club’s fiscal year and we have welcomed 16 new members, but we are still behind pace of our goal of 42 new members for the fiscal year. Initiation fees are a vital source of income for the capital account, which funds the larger projects and/or purchases, of which the demands are ever present. The Board of Directors is committed to holding a Town Hall meeting this Fall to share the current status of the capital planning as well as the projects on the horizon and ways to fund them. In short, the more abundant the inflow of capital income, the quicker we can accomplish more! In an effort to achieve our goals, the Board has extended the $1,000 referral credit for the primary sponsor through December 31 of this year. Also this fall, the annual stockholding meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 19th. By this time, you should have received the meeting notice and slate of candidates for the Board of Directors.

The club is active and vibrant thanks to the many leaders within the club, management, Board of Directors and Committees alike. Serving on a committee is a great way to engage with the club! Please refer to the committee page on the club website for the roster and if interested in serving, please reach out to the chair of the committee to express your interest. Your volunteerism can help shape the next event or future programming of your club!!

Thank you all and I hope to see you around the club.

COMMODORE’S CORNER

The Makings of a Great Cruise

As I write this Commodore’s Corner, we have just concluded our Cruise South. Our Cruise Captains – Jeff & Joyce Heller and Bill & Kim Pate – put together a great itinerary, taking us to Cape Charles, the Norfolk Yacht Club, and Fishing Bay Yacht Club. At the Captains Meeting, we shared some of the worst weather forecasts I have seen in my days of cruising the Chesapeake outside of a named storm. Wisely, we opted to have a “staycation”, with most boats heading safely to our docks at Indian Creek Normally, this would have been a great disappointment, but something amazing happened: we had FUN! The cruise captains & cruisers quickly put together a list of fun events to replace the ones planned for Cape Charles and Norfolk Your Commodore, a confirmed powerboater, went sailing in one of the club’s 420’s and had a blast (thank you, PC Dan Hoyt!). We held an intensely competitive putting contest. We christened Rear Commodore Frank’s beautiful new boat, Imagine, with a latenight rum tasting. We enjoyed a wonderful pot-luck dinner in the Club’s new Pavilion. And we ventured all the way over to Henry’s Creek to visit the world-famous Skyy Bar (thank you Jeff & Lisa Hunt!)

I believe we learned something important from this as a Yacht Club: as nice as great cruising weather is, and as important as good Ports of Call and interesting itineraries are, the most important element of a great cruise is the camaraderie shared by the cruisers Like the Who’s of Whoville who refused to let the Grinch steal their Christmas joy, the ICYC Cruisers refused to let the “Weather Grinch” steal the joy of our Cruise South and learned an important lesson in the process!

Tip of the Month

On course many players choose the incorrect targets. Even tour players do not hit the perfect shot on every swing. They will have a dispersion pattern. I would recommend with the size of our greens, starting to aim more towards the center of the green. I also encourage you to start keeping track of your misses!

Turf Talk

The course remains in good shape, with steady improvements on the greens After last month’s environmental stresses, we’ve taken key steps, including raising the height of cut, walk mowing the most affected greens, adding nutrients, overseeding, and topdressing. We’re seeing encouraging progress, especially on greens #15, #13, and #16, where turf coverage has significantly improved. For #16 and #5, we’ll soon be using plugs and sod to accelerate recovery and restore them to optimal condition. Looking ahead, we’ll start weed control this month, following the completion of ongoing irrigation repairs. Thank you for your continued support as we work to maintain and enhance the course.

Project Updates:

Bunker Renovation - The trial bunkers are now operational. The next renovation, using the Zline bunker system, will begin next week on hole #14. A full renovation proposal has also been submitted for future planning as we look at which material suits ICYCC best

· Chemical Shed - New containment units were delivered in August and the only remaining items is the completion of electrical hookup.

· Wash Pad - The recycling and filtration tank is installed, and the concrete pad is curing. The project experienced a slight delay due to additional concrete needed after discovering a high-water table during digging.

Sickle Bar has arrived and is currently being mounted. This item will be an asset to timely tree and pond bank maintenance

Irrigation Update:

Several repairs have been made throughout the past month, with some holes still requiring attention. We will continue to address areas, as needed.

Staffing Update:

At present, we are operating without an Assistant Superintendent and Irrigation Technician However, our international staff will remain with ICYCC through the end of October and will return in March 2025

Fun Fact: A Single Green Can Have Multiple Microclimates

Factors like shading, wind exposure, and soil type mean different parts of a green can have unique needs. This is why we often tailor our treatments, such as watering and fertilization, to specific sections of the same green.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
