Happy Memories

Commodore's Corner We Commodores looks forward to our year at the helm and introducing new and original cruises and social events. This year was no exception, but as the year unfolded, this became increasingly difficult. We announced our calendar of events, started the program and the next thing we found was that the state was in lockdown, because of the Coronavirus. We had no idea how it would play out. Yacht Clubs were taking different approaches. Some decided to carry on as usual, maintain the calendar, put the organizers to all the effort in the full knowledge there was a high probability of cancellation. On the other hand, some just scrapped the entire season. I knew all too well the effort and disappointment that goes into a cruise that gets cancelled. We also knew how disappointed our members might be to see the whole calendar cancelled. We found ourselves between the "devil and the deep blue sea”*.

In the end, we decided to take a conservative approach - prudently pruning the calendar and introducing cruises that had a high probability of being achievable in a Covid world. This meant staying closer to home, maintaining flexibility, avoiding marinas and restaurants and putting more emphasis on the hook. We also introduced some new social events. Not the year any of us hoped for, least of all me, but we have, as of today, a healthy Yacht Club membership and that is something to celebrate.

The new Watch starts in November and with it a new season to look forward to. I would like to recognize my Past Commodores Coyle, Whitney and Bedford and thank them for their guidance and patience during their leadership. I would also like to thank the Bridge for all their support and in particular next year’s Commodore, Bob Wayland, for all his help and his steadying hand during a difficult year.

Fall is in Full Swing

by Mike Mayer, PGA Club Championships continue The Men’s Club Championship returned to a 36-hole gross and net stroke format. The golf course proved to be formidable as cool temperatures on a long, wet course from the blue tees really challenged players. No player’s net score was under par. They say that under tough conditions the cream rises to the top and that proved to be the case again as Bob Gillispie successfully defended his title as the Men’s Club Champion. Bob has now won this event four of the last five years and has won the Senior Club Championship five years in a row.

Women’s Senior Club Championships

The ladies played under heavy rains on the first round and perfect conditions on the second round on a beautiful Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club course. The 2020 WGA Senior Club Champion is Rhonda MacQueen who finished seven strokes ahead of second place finisher Kendall Minton. Karen Zimmerman won the low net honors.

Beth Kendrick finished strong with a final round score of 86 to win the Super Senior Club Championship over second place finisher Ruth Thomas. The Low Net prize went to Molly Gatchell.

Muffin Fitzpatrick finished in first place for the Orange tee Super Seniors.

Runner-up: Kevin Crawford 165 Low Net Jeff Duffy 152 3rd Low Gross: Jim Purcell 165 Low Net Cruger Ragland 160

Women’s Club Championship The 2020 WGA Club Champion is Kay Stout who fired a two-day total of 161 on consecutive Tuesdays.

After Kay’s opening round of 77, she held off challengers for a twelve-stroke victory margin.

9-Holers Championship Congratulations go out to Paulette Smithgall who led from wire to wire to capture the 2020 Club Championship.

Jean Ehlman finished in second place. Low net honors went to Linda Atkinson.

Maggie Gilman won second low net.

Pro’s Corner: Practice Mat Only Reminder

During the winter months the warm season turf goes dormant and does not grow until warm temperatures return in May, therefore all of the divots that are taken will remain until the middle of May. Please fill your divots on the course with the sand provided on the carts and please, please, please use only the synthetic turf when practicing on the range.

Johnson Loving Foundation Golf Tournament

Odds and Ends:

The Johnson Loving Foundation contributes annually to a college bound high school senior from either the Lancaster or Northumberland County golf teams. Sixty Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club members came out to support the foundation by playing in a scramble tournament. $2,660 was raised for scholarships.

The winning team with a score of 54 pictured from left to right was Kathy Davidson, Molly Gatchell, Ellie Davis and Kay Stout. Kay Stout also won the closest to the pin contest on the second hole.

In second place with a score of 55 was the team of Bob Gillispie, Kevin Crawford, Chris Maxwell and Pete Epps.

Winning a tie breaker at 56 for third place went to Craig and Rhonda MacQueen, Ted Kattmann and Lynn Georgiadis. Also, at 56 and placing fourth were Pete Southmayd, Bill Broaddus and Jim and Margie Rankin. Fifth place honors with a score of 56 was the team of Barbara Maynard, Dianne Saunders, Barbara Fentress and Harriet Baggett

Sign up on the club calendar or in the golf pro shop. · We are planning to have a Thanksgiving golf event on Saturday, November 21st -The Butterball Better Ball! Open to men and women golfers. Bring in nonperishable food items or make a cash donation to the White Stone Food Bank and receive a mulligan. · Reminder that all credit books must be used prior to the end of the year. Come in and shop while the selection is good.

Couples Tournament Rescheduled to November 8th at Noon Since this is after Daylight Savings time ends, the start time has been moved to 12 Noon.The previously scheduled the "Tough Day" tournament for November 7 has been cancelled to avoid any conflicts with the Couples Championship on that weekend.Thanks to the efforts of Tournament Chairs, Fred and Kendall Minton, we had sixty players signed up to play had we had better conditions this past weekend.

Let's hope for a similar field on November 8th. If you were previously signed up to play or if you weren't but are now able to play, please sign up online, come by or call the Pro Shop.

Turf Talk

by Pete Stephens, CGCS I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ICYCC course and grounds maintenance team and members for another great, but unusual, season. Both covid and weather conditions made some ripples in typical best and ideal practices, and while there have been and continue to be challenges this season, perseverance prevailed. All things considered, the course conditions were consistently better than in years past. With that, I owe a large amount of gratitude the hard work of my crew.

As always, we are getting started on the Fall/Winter projects, which include drainage on fairways #10 and #14, tree maintenance, refurbishing course accessories, course trim and detail work, 2021 budget forecasting and 2022 Capital and O&M budgets. The budget process includes review of the both on and off the course management programs in preparation for another great season.

Just a reminder regarding the importance of following the cart ruling for the day, repairing ball marks on the greens and filling your divots on the tees and fairways. The bermudagrass growth slows and the cart tracks and divots become more evident and these will be here until turf growth begins again in the spring.

The ICYCC Golf Maintenance staff hopes to see everyone out on the course this fall and we wish you a have a safe Thanksgiving season.

RACQUET NEWS

On October 10th and 11th, the Indoor Racquet Center featured some really exciting tennis.

The championships kicked off with Men’s and Women’s doubles play, with great tennis being played by all of our participants.

The Men’s A division featured a couple of new members: Craig Smith and Jeff Duffy, two outstanding tennis players from the Richmond area, who both played serve and volley tennis.

Craig was teamed with Hilmar Friebe, Jeff Duffy teamed with Bob Gillispie and the third team was the defending champions: Keith Kehlbeck and Norm Faulkner.

Brenda Christoforatos and Diane Maddox were in charge of their destiny, but Ava Dalton and Debbie Gillispie had other idea’s after coming off a tough loss against Linda Fothe and Beth Kendrick in another 2.5 hour match. The day started with Linda and Beth winning a battle against Debbie and Ava 6-7, 6-2 and 10-2. Linda and Beth played back to back costing them in another tough match against Diane Maddox and Brenda Christoforatos, Diane and Brenda won that one 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. The stage was set for Diane and Brenda to walk away champions, but Debbie Gillispie fired up her partner Ava Dalton and they won in straight sets over Diane and Brenda 7-6, 6-3, taking the crown of ICYCC Women’s A Doubles Champions.

The Men’s Doubles had wonderful shot making, quick hands, aggressive net play and good doubles. At the end of the weekend, the team of Jeff Duffy and Bob Gillispie won the Men’s Doubles Championship. Jeff and Bob ran Mixed Doubles results will be in the next issue through the competition without losing one set. and the singles tournament has been moved to a Keith and Norm finished in second. later date, to be determined.

The Women’s B division showcased wonderful Keep your eyes open for the Pickleball and Spec tennis by all participants. The B division play Tennis tournament coming November 6 – 8th. was far from a normal B division play with a high level of tennis taking place. My feelings are that the level grew from last year, in part due to the Ladies' Round Robin play on Monday and Wednesdays and also the Drills and Drinks clinic on Wednesday evenings. Sandy Aderholt and Tammy McCauley teamed-up to win the championship. Susan Saunders and Anna Ransone finished second with Sande Snead and Gail Feddeman finishing third. The first match of the weekend was the key. That one match lasted 2 ½ hours and was a back-and-forth match that either team could have won. Susan Saunders and Anna Ransone won 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Both teams were worn down from such a great match. Sandy and Tammy then took charge of that division winning both matches in straight sets and taking the Women’s B Championship.
