As promised last month, your Yacht Club Bridge has completed the preliminary schedule for the 2022 boating season, and we are thrilled that it is packed with events.

In addition to the normal cruises and popular social events, we have placed a real focus on boater education.

This education will span all sizes and types of boats.

Areas such as Rules of the Road, addressing a man overboard situation, trailering a boat, safely rafting up boats, and anchoring made easy will be addressed. Some of these presentations will be broken in two parts, with a winter indoor lecture and then we will apply the skills on the water in warmer weather. Attendance to both parts is not required, but together they should expand your skillset on the topic.

Isn’t it important to execute this rescue correctly the first time?

Why are we providing education on topics that for experienced boaters are basic skills? As we age, our mobility, free time, and financial priorities evolve, and as a result so do our boating priorities. In many cases they go full circle, from small boats to bigger boats to smaller boats. This is a common progression during which technology, methodology, and rules change. As we all move into another size or type of boat, we encounter a whole new set of operational, mechanical, maintenance, and safety challenges. Learning new skills or updating old ones is important. Even the most ardent boater that solely frequents marinas will eventually

Our members are a vast source of knowledge and experience. Join a raft up this summer. You will be surprised with what you can learn from your fellow boaters.

Another key aspect is whether you have considered expanding your cruising horizon, whether it be extending day trips via kayak or setting out to circle the globe. By expanding our skills and building our confidence, the horizon does not look so distant.

One final point. As in years past, we will be publishing our Color Trifold Event Schedule, but also watch "This Week at the Creek" and email blasts for the upcoming January events that may miss the trifold printing deadlines.

Here we are again.Who would have thought that after almost two years of pandemic operations we would be looking down the barrel of another Covid wave. The Board is monitoring the local situation as well as the CDC and VDH guidance, but do not believe that any change to Club policy is warranted at his time. The important thing is that we all continue to stay safe as we enjoy another Covid Christmas.

I would like to thank those member-owners who attended the annual shareholders meeting last month.The better informed our members are regarding club finances and long-term plans, the more effective we can be as an organization.

For those members who attempted to join by Zoom, I apologize for the poor and unusable sound quality.

What is a good solution for a Zoom meeting in the Commodores Room turns out to be inadequate in the large open space in the Racquet Facility. Regardless of Covid, I think Zoom is here to stay so we will fix the sound problem before staging another meeting in that venue.

One thing that also became clear to me in that meeting is that there is a fairly wide misperception of how the club does its business. First, the Board operates as a strategy, policy and oversight body. We are not a management Board, and the day-to-day operations are left in the capable hands of the professional staff.The Board sets the goals and the policies, and the staff executes to achieve them.

The key to effective oversight lies in our committee system. We have eleven standing committees that oversee the various activities of the club (Golf, Racquet and Yacht), the maintenance and housekeeping functions (Food & Beverage, Green & Grounds and House) and the current business and future plans (Audit, Finance, Membership and Planning). The Governance Committee keeps the Bylaws and club policies up to date, as well as recruits people with specific experience and talents to serve on Committees and the Board. Finally, we have formed a new Committee (Risk Management and Compliance), which will assess the physical, financial and regulatory risks the club faces and develop mitigation strategies.Each Board member chairs one committee and serves on another, in addition to the monthly Board meetings.

The Committee structure and chairs are all listed in the Governance tab on the website and appear periodically in Smoke Signals as well. Your best way to make your voice heard on specific topics is to register your thoughts with the appropriate Committee. Better yet, volunteer to join one of the Committees that best fits your interests and background. It’s a great way for new members to get to meet people and to understand how the Club functions. The Committees serve as the farm team for the Board, and if your ambition includes serving in that capacity, the best pathway is by paying your dues on one or more of the Committees.

Every Committee and Board member is a volunteer.

They are fellow member-owners who give generously of their time to ensure the best possible experience for the rest of us. Every Committee or Board meeting represents a round of golf or a set of tennis that didn’t happen because the interests of the club were put ahead of personal pursuits.

In this time of Covid it has become increasingly common for people to vent frustrations in ways that wouldn’t have been considered acceptable before.

Anyone who has spent time in an airport recently will understand what I am saying. So if you become frustrated with some aspects of the club, and there are plenty which we are striving to improve each day, voice your constructive comments to the appropriate committee chair or Board member. Remember though, that we are also member-owners and have volunteered our time to make the club a better place.

Remember too that the clubhouse staff is not responsible for policy. We have some great people who have loyally stood by the club during the past 18 months and they deserve our gratitude. Many of you have expressed your gratitude in a tangible way through contributing to the employee Christmas fund, which is always greatly appreciated. If you have a disagreement with a specific policy take it up with the Board or Committee Chair.

In the meantime, Marcy and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Christmas on the Course On behalf of the entire golf staff, we hope everyone had a tremendous holiday season and want to wish you a very Happy New Year! It was great to see everyone in such festive spirits. In December, we had extra good fortune with the nice weather.

Hopefully, all our golfers had a chance to get out and play. Even though snow around the holidays would be a kid’s dream, from a golf and logistical perspective, I feel fortunate that we didn’t have to deal with it. The latter part of this past December was filled with temps above normal. So, with family and friends in town for the Holidays, Indian Creek was active.

TOURNAMENT/CLINIC SCHEDULE As we begin 2022, please keep an eye on the club calendar for upcoming golf tournament/golf clinic dates and signups!

HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB Are you a member of the Indian Creek Hole-In-One club? If not, you should be! The way the Hole-InOne club works is any time a club member has that miraculous shot each member will be charged $5.

The member that has the hole-in-one will receive money on their account. Sign up in the Golf Shop so you don’t miss out on the action.

FROST DELAY As we do every month during the winter, we’ll reiterate our frost policies. Foot traffic on our coolseason bentgrass greens during morning frost will damage our putting surfaces with dark/black colored footprints showing up 24-48 hours later or when the turf starts to grow. These marks will not heal; resulting in turf loss. Please check in with the Golf Shop before practicing and playing.

BILLING ACCURACY The Pro Shop aims to accurately bill you for your round of golf. Please check to make sure we have you playing the correct number of holes 18/9 and whether you are walking or riding.

Golf Instruction

To hit a basic pitch shot with average TBR (trajectory, bounce and roll), simply remember CCC (center, center, center). Set up with your weight center, your ball positioned center and your hands and the club shaft centered in the middle of your body. PGA Tour Player Grant Waite agrees when it comes to keeping things square and simple. Grant has a reputation by some on tour as one of the best short game players and teachers around. He professes square as the answer which I have long agreed with. Try to avoid tricky tips out there where your stance and club face are open when it is totally unnecessary.

Once you are in your CCC set up, stand with your feet just two club heads apart and keep your lower body quiet as you swing. You can vary distance simply by altering 3 things: length of swing pace of swing choke up or down on the club I recommend choking down an inch on almost all short game shots simply for more control. Note that the more you choke down the stiffer the shaft will become and the lower you will hit the shot, so don't play around with this too much unless that's your intention. Altering the pace of your swing is awkward and should be reserved for very low handicapped, skilled players. Everyone has their own natural tempo and throwing that off can result in decelerating, becoming jerky, accelerating at the wrong point and all sorts of errant shots. It is best to stay with your normal tempo and stay aggressive through the hit so you will get good, crisp, clean shots with spin. So that leaves simply altering the length of your swing to control distance. This is where the hours of practice come in. To simplify things I recommend mastering 3 different backswing lengths. While in college I developed 3 different backswing positions that where easy to visualize: club shaft parallel to the ground left arm parallel to the ground hands shoulder high About that same time short game guru Dave Pelz came out with his method of using the face of a clock to measure how long your backswing is. Great minds think alike! :) Whichever method works for you just nail down a few different lengths through hours of practice and figure out how far your ball flies when you stop your back swing at each one. Do this with each of your wedges.

Keep your basic pitch shot easy: visualize the shot pick your landing spot pick your club stand with feet 2 club heads apart set up CCC set your club face square pick your backswing length stay with your normal tempo and make sure to accelerate See you on the course!

Christmas Bird Count Results This year’s bird count took place on December 14th. This is a bird count that is over 100 years old.

Volunteers covered the entire Northern Neck divided into sectors. They counted each individual bird or waterfowl seen and recorded the species.The sector that includes ICYCC totaled 52 different species and 1439 individual birds. Many club members allowed us onto their properties to count or counted on their own properties to help us cover this large area from Ditchley Road to Ocran Road. Birds are particularly fond of golf courses so we counted quite a few birds riding around in a golf cart, avoiding golf balls and covering the entire neighborhood. Cedar waxwings love ICYCC and we counted a large number this year. We were missing some regulars - downey woodpeckers, scaups - but had some new sightings - marsh harrier, barred owl and ruby crowned kinglets. Robins are invading by the hundreds and particularly in areas with holly trees and other native berry producing plants. So enjoy these winter birds. If you put out suet, peanuts, raisins and seed you can watch these feathered friends from the coziness of your living room and help them survive the winter weather.

TURF TALK

By Pete Stephens, CGCS The weather continues to be great and the staff has been working on general course and grounds maintenance including course clean-up, cedar tree installation on club drive, flower plantings throughout the campus, winterization of the irrigation systems to include the water at the marina and pool bathhouse. We have also begun leveling greens irrigation heads as needed (ongoing).

This winter, the team will be completing the 2022-23 operating and capital budget, reviewing our best management practices and integrated pest management programs, which coincide with the budget process. We will work on tree maintenance (including raising the tree canopy and removing dead and broken branches) and drainage throughout the course, starting at the red tee on #13. Part of the budget process this year includes the negotiation of our expiring equipment lease.

We are headed into the depth of winter, but activities continue and headway for a full year of having fun is being made!

While we have said farewell to some of our favorite faces who migrate south at this time of year, a large majority of our membership remains here in town, ready to work hard at our resolution to have fun and continue making new friends.

The restaurants will offer a refreshed menu and lunch or dinner with a new or old friend alike could easily become a habit in 2022.

If you are a golfer, walking is a great way to stay in shape and keep warm at the same time. If you are a fairweather golfer (like myself), head to the racquet center to try your hand at pickleball. If you consider yourself a "foodie" (also like myself), we are open!

The match with Ava Dalton and Debbie Gillispie took the legs away from Gail and Terri, proving to be a key factor in the finals. Linda Fothe showed up and brought her volley game, leading her partner Brenda to a win. Great matches between experienced doubles players.

MIXED DOUBLES Finals Yet To Be Played The Mixed Doubles Members only tournament had some great matches in the main draw. Two of the matches went to 3 sets finishing with a 10-point tiebreaker. Gail Kenna and Rob Hodder defeated Stewart Hargrove and Ruth Simpson in a thrilling 3 set battle, 5-7, 6-4 and 10-6 tiebreaker. This match went back and forth with some wonderful shot making from all players. The tiebreaker came down to a few closely played points, with Rob Hodder unconscious forehand winner down the line to seal the victory.

Jeff Duff and Maggie Major upset Debbie and Bob Gillispie in another 3-set war. 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Jeff and Maggie made some incredible shots on the run and came up big at the end. Winning back-to-back points in the tiebreaker to upset Bob and Debbie Gillispie. Bob and Debbie came out strong with their experience and won an easy first set, but Jeff Duffy and Maggie Major, weren't having it! They found another gear in the second set and turned things around. Then came the 10-point tiebreak, and their momentum continued, Maggie and Jeff pulled out the win.

The next round proved to be even more competitive for Rob Hodder and Gail Kenna, they played local Pro and ICYCC member Frederick Cabocel and Linda Fothe.

Member Guest Success

Thank you to all the Member Participants, local players (Northern Neck All-Star Team), family participants, Richmond, Northern VA, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville players. We had a great turnout and wow, some fantastic matches.

Ladies played an 8-game pro set (no add scoring), with the idea of matches would last an hour and we can finish in one day. Saturday, we started the day with the ladies’ playing matches at 9, 10, 11, 12 and 1pm.

The team of Widna Benitez and Terri Dort won the whole thing by sweeping all matches, finishing 4-0. Second place belonged to Ruth Simpson and Danielle Moore who finished 3-1. Widna and Terri defeated Ruth and Danielle 8-5, which was the first match of the day for Ruth and Danielle, and was the biggest match of the day. The only close match for Widna and Terri was their first match of the day with Brenda Christoforatos and Nan Velo, but Widna and Terri won that one 8-6.

Widna and Terri game styles worked so well. They clicked as a team and ran through the field of teams. Cindy Grace and Beth Kendrick played well and finished 2 and 2, but lost a couple of close matches, they were right there, but the two close losses moved them into 3rd place.

Men played an eight-game pro set, no add scoring, in a full feed in draw. The draw was posted and ran very quickly, the men stepped on the court and played hard fought tennis matches. Mac Council and Craig Smith quickly made a statement by beating the team of Rob Hodder and USTA highly ranked player Charlie Pettinelli, Keith Kehlbeck and Carey Donavon quickly showed they were going to be a tough team by beating James Pettinelli and Bob Gillispie, setting up a great semi-finals match.

The bottom half of the draw featured Mark Tolenko from Charlottesville, men’s 4.5 player and Bill Elliot defeated Mark Allen and local Northern Neck player Ritchie Siford; while John Delong and new member Roger Flynn defeated Jeff Duffy and another local Northern Neck player Roy Jackson.

The semi-finals Mark Tulenko and Bill Elliot tood care of business 8-0 against John Delong and Roger Flynn, and match of the tournbment was Mac Council and Craig Smith comeback being down 6-5 and 15-40 to win 8-6. Setting up the finals.

Mac Council and Craig Smith played great tennis in the final winning 8-3 over Bill Elliot and Mark Tolenko. Great turnout and great matches by all.

The Mixed Doubles format was the same and played on Sunday, running very smoothly thanks to tournament director Tom Simpson. All matches were on time, and everyone had a great time.

First round matches were highlighted by this match between Danielle Moore / John Delong who defeated Pam Grady / Mark Tulenko 8-7. This was the closest match, and all four members played a a very high level. Sandy Aderholt and Howard had a tough match with Ruth Simpson and Mac Council, but really showcased how much Sandy’s game has improved.

The Semi-Finals featured another tough match between Danielle Moore / John Delong who defeated Ruth Simpson / Mac Council 8-6. Best of friends Ruth and Danielle going after it. Great Semi-Final match. Criag Smith and Cindy Grace won 8-1 and were sitting in the finals.

The Finals Danielle Moore / John Delong defeated Cindy Grace / Craig Smith 8-1. John and Danielle TCB-ed the team of Cindy and Craig. Took Care of Business. But great run by Craig and Cindy. This was a great tournament with wonderful players. A special thank you to Tom Simpson for stepping in as Tournament Director.

SARAH ANSBOURY COMING TO INDIAN CREEK YACHT AND COUNTRY CLUB

JANUARY 28TH – 30TH CLINIC & EVENT SCHEDULE COMING SOON

A 5.5 tennis player, USPTA teacher and NCAA coach Sarah found pickleball in 2014 and was instantly hooked. Sarah entered her first national pickleball tournaments in 2015 and earned Gold and Silver at the September 2015 Tournament of Champions.

In November of that year, Sarah medaled four times at the USAPA National Tournament including winning Gold in the Women’s Doubles Open with Gigi LeMaster. At the first US OPEN Pickleball Championship in Naples, Florida in April 2016 Sarah earned five medals including Golds in the Pro Division Women’s Doubles with Christine McGraft and Mixed Doubles with Daniel Moore.
