FREE BOAT SLIPS at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club OK that got your attention, and my statement is correct.

As a member of your Country Club, you are entitled to free dockage for your boat on our beautiful waterfront.

This applies to all members; not just Yacht Club members.

Your only cost is electric hookup, should you decide to plug in, and you are limited to 5 days in a given month.

We do request that you contact our Port Captain (contact info. below) the day prior to your arrival so he can assign you a slip. During the warmer months, the slips occasionally fill up with visiting clubs, but that is rare, and we can usually provide a spot.

Keep in mind dockage is not limited to cruising boats.

Golfers, racket sports enthusiast, and social members with sport and pontoon boats; why not go to the Club for lunch or dinner by boat? Have guests that you are taking to the Club for a round of golf and dinner? What better way to show off our beautiful natural surroundings and a stunning arrival by water? Concerned about the return trip after dark? Drop a car and leave the boat at the Club for a day or two. Do you normally keep your boat on a lift and are not sure how to tie up in a slip? Discuss your concerns with the Port Captain before your arrival and we will do our best to assist. Our Club’s waterfront is a signature image and a huge ICYCC asset. In addition to the dock facilities, we have a modern air-conditioned bathhouse, Pavilion and barbecue grill.

During the Covid period, many non-boating members found the Pavilion by the waterfront to be a very scenic open-air spot to play cards, BYOB with a picnic dinner, or even take-out from the Club, with friends.

In my opinion, the hidden gem of the waterfront is the Sunshade Area out on the docks. Out in this area you will find teak benches and a nice open area to enjoy the breeze, a picnic meal, or perhaps watch a friend’s ball overshoot the 1st green.

One question that is occasionally raised; does the Yacht Club own or manage the waterfront facilities? The answer to both is NO. Collectively all ICYCC members own this asset, and like all Club assets, it is managed by the ICYCC General Manager and Staff. With our boating background, the Yacht Club members do try to assist in promoting this waterfront asset and volunteer for some operational duties, such as serving as Port Captain or Sailing Master.

After spending time on our waterfront, you may decide to lease a Club slip for a year. Any ICYCC member can lease a slip for a boat that is owned by the member. If you decide to do so, please contact Megan Stephens or Brian Darlak.

The Yacht Club is happy to assist with dockage requests for your Club’s waterfront. We welcome your inquires.

BY AL ROSS I would like to add my “Welcome Back” to the clubhouse after our traditional shutdown for the first two weeks of January. Contrary to popular opinion, we don’t close down for staff vacation but to carry out some of those mundane annual chores that can’t be accomplished while we are in normal operation. Foremost among those is a thorough deep cleaning of the kitchen food storage and preparation areas, as well as other areas of the clubhouse that are difficult to access when members are present.

The staff also conducts inventory of the many items that are required to successfully operate our various venues.

Fundamental to any budget planning is how much money will we have to work with? We know that the official rate of inflation according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the end of 2021 was slightly over 7%. That rate reflects the average price increase for a wide range of items , including gasoline, food, lumber, etc. We know that items that the club needs to purchase to operate, such as wholesale food items and turf management chemicals have risen in price considerably more than 7%.

Gearing Up

I hope everyone had a safe and joyous holiday season.

2021 is in the history books and we can now shift our focus and energy toward a prosperous, healthy, happy, and fun 2022! For the Golf Shop, our mission is as clear as ever, this will be a year that offers the best possible experiences to our members and their guests. We have an incredible Club calendar in place, with even more excitement on the way as the year progresses. This will be an action-packed year, full of new opportunities for the entire family to get involved and explore everything the Indian Creek lifestyle has to offer. It all begins this month at the PGA show and I can't wait to get started! LET'S GO!

PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE 2022 If you have a child or grandchild that is interested in golf, the PGA Junior League is a great opportunity to spark a junior’s love for the game. Girls and boys age 17 and under of all skill levels are split between 2 age divisions: 7-13, and 14-17. The participants receive a team shirt, team bag, cap, and bag tag. Practices are held once a week starting in April.Matches run from May until the end of June. The format is a twoperson Captain’s Choice. This program creates friendships, teaches golf etiquette and rules, and instills the basics of playing golf and competing in a casual setting.If you know of someone interested in playing, or you have questions, contact Brenda Mayer at the pro shop.Sign-ups will be starting soon.

Clinics are free of charge and will cover common rules situations: Out of Bounds, Lost Ball, Penalty Areas, Provisional Ball, and Unplayable Ball. Clinics for 9 Hole ladies will feature topics listed below.

Concept: The Ground is Your Best Friend The ground is a great asset when it comes to building a motion that requires speed and consistency.

The term we use to describe the relationship between the body and the ground is termed Ground Force Reaction or GFR. So, let’s go back to your high school physics class and recall a few concepts. We know that when there is force pushed into the ground, the ground will push back at an equal force in the opposite direction. Think of jumping off the ground, in order to jump up you first must apply force down.

Now in regard to the golf swing here is a simple example: if I apply pressure down and out (away from the target) into my trail foot, the ground will push back and move me towards the lead foot/target. This simple movement of applying force down and away in the trail foot helps create the needed force to then move my body and club forward through the strike. This is just one example of the many Ground Force Reactions that are taking place in the golf swing.

What does this mean for you?

If your body doesn’t utilize the ground properly you will never maximize your power output or your ability to deliver the club in an efficient and consistent manner. Spend time with someone who understands Ground Force Reaction and how it applies to the golf swing, and you may just find your hidden untapped power.

by George Christoforatos The Australian Open kicks off the 2022 tennis season. The number one men's player will not be there because Novak Djokovic did not follow Australia's Covid protocols. Given his absence, new stars might take over the sport in this year's slam. My Greek heritage makes me favor the number four player in the world, Stephanos Tsitsipas. Besides this Greek player, other young guns are in the men's draw. Daniel Mevadev , the number one seed, is favored to win. Among other big hitters who could take the crown are Zverev, Rublev, Berrettini, and Singer. The youngest in the race, Carlos Alcaraz, aims for a spot in the world's top 15 this year. At age 18, he is the youngest male to reach the Open's third round since 2011.

In two matches this Spaniard has not lost a set, and his sleeveless shirt draws comparisons to the young Rafael Nadal.

The USA men must not be discounted with 24 of them in the draw. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul have a chance of winning the championship. If the courts play fast and his body holds up, John Isner has a chance, as does Maryland's Francis Tiafo.

The women's draw is wide open, though Australia's Ash Barty is favored to win. Again, the Greek in me hopes that Maria Sakkari from Greece, ranked number 5 in the world, wins the Open. This year 35 American women are competing in Melbourne. In the past few years, women players in the USA have made great strides, much more than our male players.

Tennis is a sport that continues to grow in our country. One day soon, I hope we will again have number one ranked players for both men and women. Serena and Venus Williams, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi, were four of our greatest champions.
