General Manager's Message

MAKING WAY Annually in November, we welcome the new Members to the Board of Directors and thank those departing. So, I will first thank Dan Hoyt for his 3 years of service as well as thank Merrill Grasso for her service on the Board. A big Welcome to Bob Wayland, for being elected to serve a 3year term and Welcome Back to Barbara Fentress, Kathy Rhodes and Gil Zimmermann for serving a second 3-year term. In addition, Steve Smithgall been elected by the Board to serve the remaining two years of Merrill Grasso’s term. And, a thank you in advance to Al Ross who has been elected by the Board to serve a second term as President.

Making Way - The management team is totally focused on hiring quality staff to provide the Club experience that the member-owners expect. We are utilizing online resources such as Indeed & Facebook, as well as, traditional ads in the Rappahannock Record. But word of mouth has been our best tool - be it from a fellow employee or from a member referring new employees to a position within the Club. So, I ask that if you know of anyone who would be an asset to our team, please refer them to the website or have them stop in to fill out an application and meet with the appropriate Department Head to discuss employment opportunities.

In looking ahead, there are steps the Board is taking to keep momentum behind the Projects outlined in the Architectural Master Plan. The Board has authorized the release of Request for Proposal of a Civil Engineering Study to evaluate the feasibility of locating the various projects as outlined in the Facility Master Plan. The timing of this would yield results in late spring so that the design phase can begin with variables known early in the process. We are excited and hopeful that there are no showstoppers identified- but will communicate reports as we have them.

Also during this time, department heads have begun to work on their operating and capital budgets. This will be the start of the process that involves various committee input, compiled for the Finance Committee who ultimately recommends a budget to be adopted by the Board. This process will take a few months before the Board ultimately votes on the Budget at their March meeting.

Lastly, the holiday season is upon us! Whether you celebrate with us at the Club or with friends and family elsewhere, I hope you have a safe and happy Holiday Season!

COMMODORE'S CORNER

On the evening of November 6th, for the 58th time since 1964, the Indian Creek Yacht Club performed the Change of Watch. As your new Commodore, and speaking for your newly installed Bridge members, we are very enthusiastic as we commence activity planning for the 2022 yachting season. As always, the calendar will be packed, promising events of varied interest. In the past two years boating activity has exploded and we have members with boats of all sizes. It is our goal to bring boats, of all size and type, together to enjoy the wonderful experiences we can have on our creeks. Watch for Raft Up information on your local creek this coming season.

For everyone that frequents our local waters, it was wonderful to hear that local Coast Guard Station Milford Haven will remain open yearround. The Coast Guard had planned, as a cost cutting measure, to suspend station operations during the winter months. If operations were suspended at Milford Haven, and we had an on the water emergency, CG Station Portsmouth, a multi hour boat trip, would be the responders. With many members of our community frequenting the Bay year-round, this appeared unacceptable. Input from the community and many areas of government forced reconsideration of the seasonal closure. Thankfully Station Milford Haven will continue to serve the Northern Neck and surrounding areas on a year-round basis.

Golf News

THIS IS THE PERFECT SEASON FOR PRACTICE

2021’s amazing weather continues as fair Fall weather has kept us golfing through October and November with no signs of stopping! With many people still in town, October and November play has added to 2021’s historical round count. If you are looking to play and the weather permits, please use the club website or call the golf shop to set up a tee time (walking or riding), reserve golf carts, and book guest play. We remind you to be cognizant of course conditions. If we receive significant rainfall, snow accumulation, or if it is cold enough for frost, please refrain from going on the course. We appreciate your understanding and protection of the course.

The Golf Committee is hard at work on the 2022 Golf Events Calendar and we are excited about the offerings. Responding to our membership request, the Golf Committee is working to have more competitive events, increased golf lesson programming, and more events to showcase the course/entice new members. We are asking for members to be ambassadors for specific events to help recruit participants and tailor the event to what you, as members, want. If there is a specific tournament or event that you enjoy, please consider volunteering as an ambassador for the event. A huge shout out to all our committees, committee members, and ambassadors for their time and ideas for the betterment of the Club.

Thank you to all the members that made purchases in the Golf Shop, took lessons, and participated in clinics, events, and tournaments. Your support allows for us to budget our time, resources, and assets towards providing the best experience possible. We appreciate your understanding of our modified operations/procedures during this challenging year and look forward to providing you with more attention in 2022 and beyond! Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and healthy Holiday season! Take a moment to reflect on what you are most thankful for and enjoy your blessings.

THANK YOU to all the wonderful members who volunteered on the grounds and in the gardens this year. It was a tremendous help to Pete and I and enabled us to accomplish so much more. Every little effort counts. We planted more than 400 plants on the grounds this year. Some garden areas were added to and some were new like those on the 16th hole, at the marina and at the ninth tee.

Thank you also to all the members who contributed plants, bulbs and trees to the club. Many of the plantings are starting to mature and fill their spaces lowering the level of care needed. The native plants are drawing birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife to the property.

This next month is the Christmas Bird Count, a 100 year old tradition that adds much information to the ongoing data base on world bird populations. We also had two butterfly counts on ICYCC and a waterfowl count as well. If any of you are ever interested in participating in these counts please let me know. You don’t need to be an expert. Novices are more than welcome so come join us.

Happy Holidays and get out and enjoy our wonderful outdoor home here in the northern neck.

TURF TALK

Last fall, the course was very wet to say the least with carts restricted to the cart paths most of the Fall and Winter months. So far, we have been blessed with very nice weather conditions and on time rain events. The team is focused on preparing the course for daily play and course and grounds clean up.

FURY OF FALL LEAVEES

November, like October, offered great golfing weather and golf rounds are up, which is wonderful! The end of October marked the end of the golf season, which also marked the end of seasonal staff support. The full-time staff are eager to pick up the weight and carry on as we head into winter and begin winter projects.

The team will continue our annual meetings regarding course and grounds safety, and equipment operation, pressure washing campus facility buildings as needed, planning for the 2022 season, building the Course and Grounds budgets, Strategic Planning, restoring equipment, tree maintenance, making organizational improvements to the Turf Center, bunker maintenance, weed control and many other small projects that we are able to do as weather permits.

The course and grounds team wishes everyone a very happy and safe Thanksgiving, and would like to take this time to give a heartfelt thank you the ICYCC membership for your support this past season.

MORE ON THE HORIZON It's been a busy year, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Inter Club Play We just played our first tennis match against the Fredericksburg YMCA women’s group and did very well, we won 8 out of 9 lines, on a very windy day. We are planning for the Fredericksburg YMCA to come play here at home next. We are reaching out to Richmond and other areas to find other clubs to play against as well. We are looking to play Tennis or Pickleball against any club that is willing to take us on.

Spec Tennis Open Play

Beginning Pickleball Saturday 1pm to 2pm – Beginning Pickleball clinic – designed to teach all new players the game from the ground up.

Tennis Open play Ladies' Round Robin Monday and Fridays 9am to 1130am – outdoor courts. We will continue to play until it gets too cold but are looking into moving inside soon.

Men’s 4.0 and Up Open Play: Tuesday / Thursday 7pm to 830pm Saturday 11:30 am to 1pm

This sport continues to grow, We have two open dates and time for all Tennis Clinics members to play.

Wednesday and Friday 12:30pm to 2pm. We have paddles and balls, ready for anyone who is interested.

Pickleball Open Play Open to all members. Mon, Wed, Friday – 2pm to 4pm and Sunday 4pm to 6pm.

Pickleball Clinics Tournament Level: Sunday 3pm to 4pm Fast Feeding Drills: oWednesday 1pm to 2pm - For all levels of play. Clinic designed to have you hit lots of balls and get ready to play from 2pm to 4pm

Ladies 3.0 / 3.5 Clinic Tuesdays 2:30pm to 4pm. Bringing the level of doubles play up, by learning strategies, fundamental doubles play, making smart shots, and having fun.

Cardio Tennis Tuesday and Thursday morning 8am to 9am. Working out to some great music and burning calories.

Drinks and Drills Wednesday 4pm to 530pm – Enjoying 1.5 hours of drills, live ball play and enjoying each other’s company afterwards for food and drinks.

Youth Tennis Clinics >10 – Sat 2pm to 3pm Middle/High School – Sat 3 to 430pm High Performance Clinic – 8 Sat & Sun

USTA breakdown of levels of play to may help you decide, which level to participate.

General Characteristics of NTRP Playing Levels (National Tennis Rating Program) Level 1.5: You have limited experience and are working primarily on getting the ball in play.

Level 2.0: You lack court experience, and your strokes need developing. You are familiar with the basic positions for singles and doubles play.

Level 2.5: You are learning to judge where the ball is going, although your court coverage is limited. You can sustain a short rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability.

Level 3.0: You are fairly consistent when hitting medium-paced shots but are not comfortable with all strokes and lack execution when trying for directional control, depth, or power. Your most common doubles formation is one-up, one-back.

Level 3.5: You have achieved improved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but need to develop depth and variety. You exhibit more aggressive net play, have improved court coverage and are developing teamwork in doubles.

Level 4.0: You have dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate-paced shots. You can use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success and occasionally force errors when serving. Rallies may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.

Level 4.5: You have developed your use of power and spin and can handle pace. You have sound footwork, can control depth of shots, and attempt to vary game plan according to your opponents. You can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. You tend to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.

Level 5.0: You have good shot anticipation and frequently have an outstanding shot or attribute around which a game may be structured. You can regularly hit winners or force errors off of short balls and can put away volleys. You can successfully execute lobs, drop shots, half volleys, overhead smashes, and have good depth and spin on most second serves.

Level 5.5: You have mastered power and/or consistency as a major weapon. You can vary strategies and styles of play in a competitive situation and hit dependable shots in a stress situation.

Level 6.0 - 7.0: You have had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior and collegiate levels and have obtained a sectional and/or national ranking. If you are Level 7.0, you are a world-class player!
